Cable plans on being back

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, January 4th, 2010 at 12:44 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders coach Tom Cable said at his season-ending press briefing he has spoken to owner Al Davis and will be talking with him again next week.

He said the subject of his job secruity was not addressed and would simply fulfull his duties while under contract until told differently.

Cable, as well as a few players in the locker room that included Bruce Gradkowski, Zach Miller and Robert Gallery,, expessed optimism regarding the direction of the team. Players available supported his return.

A few other quick hits, with more details to come later:

– JaMarcus Russell and Richard Seymour were not at the final team meeting. Cable said both were excused absences for personal reasons.

– Cable conceded he may have spread himself too thin and sounded open to delegating some duties _ including play-calling _ if postseason analysis proves that would be the right path.

– Gallery’s surgery fused vertebra, widened the spinal canal, cleaned out calcium desposits and he expects to be fine by training camp.

Much more to come later. . .

What makes Al Davis such a scumbag is that he runs everything, and blames everybody else.

He may have spread himself too thin when he was just the O-Line coach, let alone the Head Coach of a professional football team. The ONLY reason to even keep this guy is continuity. If he does stay, he needs a REAL OC and a REAL OLINE coach.

  9. kidseven Says:

Huff had a very solid year–Branch even better. Mitchell looks like he can be a good SS eventually. I say keep ‘em all. One of the team’s strengths. Was also mostly happy with CJ, and Routt is probably about as good as you’re going to get for a 3rd DB.

Really it all makes pretty good sense: Raiders have drafted defensive backfield for years now–stands to reason that would eventually become a strength. Lack of attention to LB and DL is a problem, however. Love Morrison’s pride but won’t be sorry if he goes.

I’d like to see linemen on both sides of the ball and a a beast MLB. Russell might be good someday, but I’m ready to see him become someone else’s project. Bring Grads back with a couple other hungry dudes and see what happens. Raiders could have been in the playoof hunt with even average QB play.

  14. JB Says:

Maybe the real test on whether JaBustus is the worst QB prospect ever is your answer to the following question:

If your team was in the key game of the year, which QB would you hope was playing for the other team. If you picked JaBustus like I did, it should be clear to you that this person shouldn’t even be in the NFL. Yes, he can throw a laser type pass and every now & then it may go where it was intended but, is he bright enough & dedicated enough to lead & manage the team throughout the entire game? I think not. In my view, Jabustus is just a freak of nature who happened to be just what AD was looking for – the reincarnation of Jeff George. It is my prediction that JaBustus has no more than 1 year left in this league before everybody finally realizes that he really is as bad as he looks. Many have made excuses for him but that approach is wearing thin on the few supporters that are left. JuBustus just needs to be recognized for what he is, the absolute WORST BUST EVER and then we can all decide tomove on. You may not agree with me on this issue but in the words of the infamous AD, GET OVER IT. Jabustus’s 15 minutes of fame and wealth are long over and past due. Let’s just all get along, kicking his ass to the curb and moving on to others worth our time & effort.

Draft OL, MLB, DL and pickup Troy Smith, QB in FA. Name a new HC and hope will remain eternal. Pass the KoolAide.

Most owners of any business follow this pattern. Owners do not fire themselves. Why everyone wants to act as if davis should some how be different boggles the mind.

    Im torn on this issue:

I like Cable and the team appears to play for him. Im intrigued to watch him and Gradowski next year. Also I actually like his play-calling. Most of the time.

    but

11 losses is 11 losses. Continuity may be over rated with so many 1st year coaches having success (Den, ATL, Balt). Wonder if Al has his eye on someone ala the next Gruden or Sean Payton.

I do think that Raider fan expectations are so low that we are ok wih a 5-11 season. Cable can blame Jamarcus all he wants but he is the coach and its his call. Remember how long it took him to bench Kwame Harris last year. He did the same thing this year with Jamarcus.

Truth be told and I’m gonna tell it,what privateblack and floridapete 4get is we have ALWAYS used a decoy.

If one looks at the roster when Barnwell played, they would see the names of Christenson,Branch,Allen,King and Plunkett.

Well just how do you think those players attained the status they did during those years?

Barnwell finished his career with a 17.1 yard AVERAGE!!!!

  49. RaiderDogg Says:

    4eva

There were planty of speed guys all throughout the draft that could have filled the “decoy” role without having to be paid $30 million dollars.

9 catches for 119 yards and 1 td works out to:

$30 million for every TD or
$3.3 Million for every catch or
    $252,101 per yard received.

Anyway you break it down it is too much to pay a decoy, regardless of team history.

Do you think Barnwell was the highest paid WR on the roster?

  50. M Lonetree Says:

  53. mistic1 Says:

del rio is average. The book is out on him and its written in stone. Del Rio is a defensive guy but his defense has not been very good the last few years. I really like marshall and I think he should get his shot at selecting guys that will fit his vision. i thiink as the year went on we got to see more of what he brings to the table. What hurts him is the weak play of d tackles and lb’s, morrisson in paticular. Lots of tackles but very little impact. Morrisson is consitantly out of position, and he’s another guy that the team does not respond to. All sizzle and no steak.

  54. CaptainBlack Says:

4eva, thanks for the demotion, but it should be YOU! Al spent 30 million dollars and wasted a 1st round pick on a guy who can’t catch! Al also loved TE Andrew Glover’s speed but he could not catch.

Leach compared to Cable is an offensive genius. It’s about results right?

I am not saying Leach is my favorite pick to be HC, but i know, based on how well Texas Tech has done under Leach as opposed to how Idaho did when Cable was coach I don’t need to look any further.

Cable is a scrub who was lucky enough to be on the staff when Lance was fired.

Basically I wholeheartedly disagree with you that Cable would be better for the Raiders than Leach.

  62. M Lonetree Says:

cable cant tell players to do the right things with out uproarious laughter coming back at him. when you punch a coach in the face, beat up women, and get blown out every other week, you get no respect, your rodney dangerfield. Leach would have the same issue, you just got fired for mistreating student athletes, your former players are split, some support you some hate you. How could leach possibly handle the guys here in oakland when you couldnt handle texas tech. what a joke.

  64. Raider O Says:

The spread offense makes a lot of sense, especially if they keep JaMarcus at QB. He would be much more comfortable playing mostly out of the shotgun, considering how much he did at LSU.

Look at Alex Smith. Played in a spread offense in college and didn’t have any success with the 9ers until this year when they implented a spread type of offense.

RaiderDogg, Doesn’t Spread O compromise the Protection? Haven’t seen much of it up close just heard of it by analysts that say “it sucks and Tim Tebow sucks wont be good in NFL cuz he only good at sprea O”.”

It does limit protection to a certain extent, although it forces the defense to spread out as well. Plus, considering the lack of protection all of the qb’s got this season, I think a change is in order. Maybe not the spread offense, but certainly a different play caller for starters.

The patriots, colts, saints, cardinals, vikings and eagles do a pretty good job in a version of the spread. The only team that gives a zone read spread are the titans, because of vince young it works for them. Spread only means multiple receiver sets( usually 3 or 4) bigger splits between line men, and some times the qb will operate from shotgun while stretching the defense horizontally. There are many different variations to this offense. This is a spin off of the run and shoot, which is a descendant of the sid gilman/ don coryell offense. You can replace receivers with tight ends and backs and send them into patterns which gives it more of a west coast spin. This is what we saw when we watched ganon win the mvp.

  111. El Tato Says:

Schilens and Murphy can be starters in this league.

    - Schilens had 29 receptions, 365 yards in 8 games (good for 58 receptions, 730 yards if he had played 16 games) in his first season as a starter.

    - Murphy has over 500 yards with team-high 4 TDs in limited playing time (he started in the first half, when he wasny probably ready and had JaMarcus as passer)

  112. Thec07 Says:

that are tired of the BS, but we still have a love for the nation so we keep it going…. but i do feel your post BRUH…… Champagne is far better tasting than piss… better bubbles….

  113. HayesDaze37 Says:

It’s STILL a great day to be a Raiders fan. Isn’t it?

Grads and Frye deserve moderate pay increases, on 2-3 year contracts. JaMarcus will restructure his to make it so. Another veteran QB will be brought in, and the Raiders will have QB’s rated at least AVERAGE next year.

Cable was right when he said ANY pro-level QB play this year would’ve put the Raiders at 8-8 or even in the Playoffs. JaMarcus has had two highly-respected QB/Offensive gurus working with him, and he’s regressed anyway.

Time for a veteran to guide this team, while we groom a younger QB on the sidelines. More than anything else…an NFL QB needs to be a leader. JaMarcus is no leader.

Tom Cable should stay…but with a real OC to call plays, and an O-line coach to help take some of the load off. Of course, Cable had too much on his plate…but he hunkered-down, kept a level head, and kept the locker room from melting-down. That’s hard to do when the world is coming apart at the seams.

He obviously didn’t win enough, and had some rough patches — but all things considered, Cable did a remarkable job keeping the team together, in a locker room and organization that is known to splinter as soon as things go bad…and they went bad early and stayed that way throughout the year.

If Holmgren or Cowher can’t be here, there isn’t another (known comodity) HC candidate available that’s worth making a change for. There are a few that might be good coaches, but not sure it’s time to try one here. Now, taking a chance on another relatively-unknown HC might do the trick…but WHY do that, when this team needs stability and unwavering commitment — things Cable has brought, however improbably, considering all that has happened this year.

Keep the locker room as (largely) one, all-for-one unit. Keep the coach with the fighting spirit and never-say-die attitude. A number of these Raiders have been here before…this is one time where the players’ choice is the right choice.

Build on the coaching staff…don’t re-build the staff now. We’ve got enough things to address on the field.

you dont have to chenge mac 20’s position to get something out of him. You must a give him the ball 15-20 times a game to start, also try and be creative with him. Putting him in the slot or out wide is good from time to time, but running with the ball is his real talent. What would it be like if he carried the ball 20 times from the back field, we dont know?? This is a problem I have with cable, he needed to find that out. mac20 could be used in a similar way to mcoy and westbrook in philly, insted of like we used him. Even ronnie harmon was able to carve out a nitch for himself. Harvy williams was terrible but we gave him the ball. We still dont know what we have and the season is over. im afraid Cable created more questions than answers.

    **************************************************

    1) Cable was wrong, the o-line played so poorly that any qb would struggle in that situation, having a guy that wasnt prepared made it worse, but it wasnt the main reason they did not win.

    2) Cable did not keep this team together, witness the melt down in cleveland. What about the debacle hosting the redskins. You cant have a team play hard one half and then mail it in the second half.

    3) worst of all you failed to get your main guys offense and defense to step up and become leaders, this above all else is a head coaches main responsibility.

Cable is out and not a moment too soon.

Nevertheless, I was back to getting firewood 6 months later…. which includes loading half-rounds of 2 1/2 diameter doug fir cut to 18″ lengths into a pickup…then unloading and splitting them later. Methinks a young man like Mr. Gallery will heal quickly and be back to plugging his spot on the 0-line in no time. Draft for other needs.
