Raiders OK with Russell, still mad at Gannon

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, January 6th, 2010 at 5:12 pm in Oakland Raiders.

For the record, the Raiders aren’t overly concerned with the Las Vegas excursion by JaMarcus Russell, saying he was in Sin City accompanied by someone with the club, and have no intention of taking Rich Gannon up on his offer to help the team reverse the tide of seven consecutive losing seasons.

Steve Corkran followed up on both issues today with senior executive John Hererra, who confirmed, “JaMarcus was in Las Vegas, and he was there with a (Raiders staff member). He was there for a legitimate reason.”

As for Gannon, Herrera’s company line made it clear the former MVP is persona non grata in Alameda.

“It’s Rich that needs the help,” Herrera said. “When he goes on a radio show offering Mr. Davis help, Tom Cable help, the Raiders help, maybe it’s Rich that needs the help.”

Herrera also said, “What does Rich Gannon think he has to offer that Paul Hackett can’t contribute, when he himself said Paul Hackett is the best quarterbacks coach that he ever had?”

The Raiders have also signed practice squad player to a future’s contract, tying him to the Raiders into next season. Wide receiver Paul Hubbard, center Tim Mattran, quarterback Jeff Otis and guard Brandon Robb were not retained.

In other news, according to Raiders.com, linebacker Sam Williams is the team’s nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award, given for service to the community.

Connecticut Senator Christopher Dodd announces he will step down …

    LOL

you 0bama worshippers must be devastated!

When Paul Hackett worked in New York (Jets, 2001-2004) and Tampa (2005-2008) they drafted 3 QBs:

    - Brooks Bollinger – 6th round 2003
    - Bruce Gradkowski – 6th round 2006
    - Josh Johnson – 5th round 2008

So those who think we are going to sign QB Chris Simms because he is Hackett guy (I read this in some post) you are wrong. Those 3 are the only 3 QBs drafted when Hackett was a QBs coach at NY and Tampa.

So maybe we will take a small, mobile, and future NFL backup in the later rounds this year too.

Waving the flag of job growth tomorrow is like praising the Raiders for increasing their win total from 2 to 4 to 5.

    Way to go guys!!!

somebody needs to get “the intern” Southwick on the phone. find out whats really going on.

does Danny boy have a realistic shot at competing with the scrubs at QB in 2010?

thats probably why Rich Gannon is banned from the facility. he’d turn Danny Southwick into the next Dan Marino!

    Buy one.
Hell, buy two, in case the first one breaks.

    At least 500 balls a day…minimum.

If you still can’t catch a freaking ball in August..time for a new line of work.

  • new englandraider

dhb was projected by many to be a mid to late 1st round pick. most had him as either 3rd or 4th best wr. behind craptree, maclin, and harvin. although most had dhb rated better than harvin. y i don’t know. mike mayock said a week b4 the draft that dhb would be the pick. then 2 mins b4 the pick said they will take dhb. sure enough

  • El Tato

I think Routt spends time in the offseason being mentored by guys like Michael Waddell, John Bowie & Jonathan Holland. Maybe even Duane Starks & Tyrone Poole!

    —————————————-

Tyrone Poole and Duane Starks are both former first round picks with 3 Super Bowl wins combined. I think he REALLY can learn a think or two with those 2 guys.

  • OFL71

Of course it’s not his fault he was drafted too high.
The point was about all the bad draft picks and how many other players SHOULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN in recent years and that’s why this team is taking monumental steps backwards.
The point also was that STL is not making these poor personnel moves and therefor are moving in the right direction………is this thing on…..?

Robbins was shot 3 times by detectives and LIVED….Like I’ve said B4,Robbins was the BOMB and a DOMINATING CENTER….hate looking back but if Robbins plays in S/B we win,NO DOUBT.As Lincoln Kennedy said,we would tell the defense what play it was,Try And Stop Us!

We haven’t been dominating on offense since we had a dominating CENTER,imo
    *****************

100% accurate assessment. Adam Tru, Robbin’s replacement was terrible. He alone was the major reason we lost. He was far worse than what we have right now so that must tell you something.

OK, my point was NEVER that they should have taken DHB or anything like that. I’ve been asking for guys to stop the run for years!! I think DHB was just as crappy as guys taking ahead of him this year, and I gave you a list of players.

You think Chris Long and Jason Smith were good draft picks the last two years at #2? Most people say those picks haven’t panned out, just like DHB. They passed on Matt Ryan and Mark Sanchez, and could draft a big flop at QB this year.

Want to bet who wins more games next year, Raiders or Rams? I will give you a game.

  • new englandraider

i think more than 8 qbs have started for us in that time.tui had 1 against jets. collins, brooks, walter, rick mirer, mcclown culpepper, jruss, frye, grads. when we had rob johnson for a little bit, did he ever start a game????????

  • OFL71

“Trade out of the TOP 10!!!!”

I disagree, just do your homework better, draft for need not hype and if you have personnel people in place with high football IQs most high draft picks will turn out productive if not better.

  • El Tato

JP Losman will be the starting QB at some point next season

  • http://www.elvis.com Lucifer-666

Tim Tebow will have about as good a pro career as Troy Smith is having.

Some people are great college players but that doesn’t always mean they will be good pro’s.

I know for a fact that there will be 4 or 5 QB’s taken before him. He is a project player and will be lucky to go before the 4th round.

Its easier to fail drafting in the Top 10

I was pretty sure WR Hakeem Nicks was a better player than DHB was, but WHO THE HELL WAS GOING TO DRAFT HIM 7TH OVERALL? NOBODY BECAUSE HE RAN A 4.50 INSTEAD OF A 4.20. Still, he is the better player.

Patrick Willis was GOD coming out, but HE WAS JUST A LB, so we didnt draft him.

  • new englandraider

they may have to trade out of top 10 for financial reasons. wouldn’t be bad to perhaps trade down a few spots and pick up a 3rd or 4th rnd pick

  • OFL71

I’d take Long/Smith over our last two picks without hesitation!
Know why?Cause we needed those positions filled, not another RB/WR.
I don’t know about next season with Raiders vs Rams record wise but I’d bet my left nut STL makes the playoffs before Oakland.

    Yikes….Don’t do it!!!!

They play each other next year, so we can pick this up than. I will remember.

  • El Tato

Michael Oher was the “best prospect coming out since Orlando Pace”

He goes to the combine, and after that BS called Combine he was the 4th rated OT, so he was passed by 22 teams until Ravens got him 23. One year later he was voted number 2 for Offensive Rookie of the Year after Percy Harvin.

The Combine is a BS, and drafting in the top 10 doesnt mean drafting more talent, and also means the player will be considered a bust if he doesnt produce since Day 1.

TRADE OUT OF THE TOP 10!!!

Jim Harbaugh a “stealth” candidate for Bills, Raiders jobs

There has been some speculation that the Buffalo Bills (who don’t currently have a head coach) and the Oakland Raiders (who currently do) could be interested in hiring Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh.

A league source tells us that it’s more than speculation; the brother of Ravens coach John Harbaugh is, we’re told, a “stealth” candidate for both jobs.

Secrecy is critical (oops) because Jim Harbaugh currently is in the midst of recruiting season. If Harbaugh acknowledges that he’s a candidate for any job other than the one he has, his recruits will scatter like members of the Cardinal band in the end zone of a game that isn’t yet over.

For any college coach plotting a move, the news needs to come swiftly or not at all, and Harbaugh will have to use the “I’m not going to be the Alabama coach” routine until, you know, he ultimately becomes the Alabama coach.

(Then again, there’s a chance that Jim Harbaugh is already the Baltimore coach.)

In NFL coaching circles, neither the Bills job nor the Raiders job is regarded as incredibly attractive. But the reality is that there are only 32 jobs in NFL head-coaching circles, and Jim Harbaugh simply doesn’t strike us as a guy who is destined to spend his career as a college head coach. With his brother making it to the playoffs twice in his first two seasons with the Ravens, the interest in the Harbaugh who was a pretty good pro quarterback only will increase.

  • OFL71

Harbaugh already “declined” last year saying he was staying in Stanford.
Why the hell would he come to Oakland this year when the exact same situation exists?
And is Jim Harbaugh really the answer for a team like The Raiders?
What exactly has Stanford accomplished during his tenure…?
    Not much.
I don’t see Harbaugh turning it around in Oakland.

  • OFL71

IMO the only thing that will make a difference(coaching wise)is a big name proven winner who can bring in his own staff and possibly call shots on who the GM/DFO will be.
That DOES NOT happen in Oakland so it will just be another gutless puppet doin what he’s told.

  • OFL71

Kiffin doesn’t seem so bad after all.
At least he had the balls to stand up to Alice, even if he was kinda weaselly.
