Raiders OK with Russell, still mad at Gannon

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, January 6th, 2010 at 5:12 pm in Oakland Raiders.

For the record, the Raiders aren’t overly concerned with the Las Vegas excursion by JaMarcus Russell, saying he was in Sin City accompanied by someone with the club, and have no intention of taking Rich Gannon up on his offer to help the team reverse the tide of seven consecutive losing seasons.

Steve Corkran followed up on both issues today with senior executive John Hererra, who confirmed, “JaMarcus was in Las Vegas, and he was there with a (Raiders staff member). He was there for a legitimate reason.”

As for Gannon, Herrera’s company line made it clear the former MVP is persona non grata in Alameda.

“It’s Rich that needs the help,” Herrera said. “When he goes on a radio show offering Mr. Davis help, Tom Cable help, the Raiders help, maybe it’s Rich that needs the help.”

Herrera also said, “What does Rich Gannon think he has to offer that Paul Hackett can’t contribute, when he himself said Paul Hackett is the best quarterbacks coach that he ever had?”

The Raiders have also signed practice squad player to a future’s contract, tying him to the Raiders into next season. Wide receiver Paul Hubbard, center Tim Mattran, quarterback Jeff Otis and guard Brandon Robb were not retained.

In other news, according to Raiders.com, linebacker Sam Williams is the team’s nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award, given for service to the community.

    Hey RicoCrap:

You’re a freakin’ imbecile. How you can possibly compare any of those other owners to Al Davis shows just how much an ass you are. If there was a legit comparison to make, your point would be valid.

RICHOCHET: everything I say is valid. Just takes you a little longer to comprehend. Stupid is as stupid does.
    ###########################

So again. . . .yes. . . .if you bought the Oakland Raiders (owned by Al Davis) Koolaid at some point in your life, you have 3 choices:

    1. Either acknowledge that the man will not change his ways. Doesn’t mean you have to like it. But you also acknowledge that he’s won before and believe he’ll win again. . . in his own, weird, twisted manner.

RICHOCHET: no..YOU might acknowledge that..what I acknowledge is that Ron Wolfe kicked ass, NOT AL..that Bruce Allen and Gruden ran a solid ship…NOT AL..and when Al’s trying to do what other GM’s did before him? HE SUCKS AT IT.
That’s a fact. THE WHOLE WORLD KNOWS THAT’S A FACT. EVERY REPORTER KNOWS THAT’S A FACT. FANS HAVE SPENT MONEY ON BILLBOARDS STATING THAT’S A FACT..
the slow..spineless..and jellyfish fans refuse to see that fact.
    you know..like you.
    ############################

    2. Be a “go-getter” and create a freakin’ billboard if that gets you off. If that makes you feel like you’re important, hey. . .enjoy. You can then go back to feeding your hamster.

RICHOCHET: Ahhh..what you’re saying is it’s OK to make it clear to everyone that Al sucks at what he’s doing, just do it where you don’t have to step up and defend the derelict?
    Wow…hmmm…let me think….
Nawww…billboards already been done. I think I’m fine schooling you..right here.
    Thanks for the offer, though.
    #########################

    3. Or. . .if you’re just so bitter that you sit here and cry like a little girl every day about how we’re not going anywhere until Al Davis is dead, then as I said – go away and do something that makes you happy.

RICHOCHET: And we’re back to the offer to PLEASE LEAVE ME ALONE..PLEASE..IF YOU DON’T LOVE AL DAVIS, GO AWAY..IF YOU DON’T ACCEPT HIM TEARING APART THE TEAM, GO AWAY..”

What you mean to say is what you initially said..you want everyone to be like you..NO BALLS, SPINELESS, JELLYFISH..AND A COWARDLY LEMMING…
    Again..I’ll respectfully decline.

don’t get me wrong. World needs followers..people who never take a stand..who never demand better..who want others to think for them..you’re just fine where you are, Smac.
    ########################

If you can’t stand Al Davis, you chose the wrong team.

RICHOCHET: See my attendence figures above..seems the majority can’t stand Al Davis..you pansy.

    ##################
So if you can’t stand the dude that makes every single decision that affects this particular football team, then make a choice.

RICHOCHET: Oh…well..ok…how’s this? AL DAVIS..YOU SUCK!!

    pretty much sums it up.

  5. r8der4life0408 Says:

God help us. This confirms to me that this organization is destined for more doom. When a man like Rich Gannon offers his services to you after seven straight seasons of eleven or more losses I would be inclined to take that help. Clearly Al Davis and his “puppet,” John Herrera have to much pride at this point and will continue to do things there way. Maybe I am reading into this too much but it also leads me to believe that Paul Hackett will be retained, hopefully meaning Coach Cable will be retained. I believe that Coach Cable has the respect of the players that matter in this organization, I do however agree that he needs to relinquish play calling duties. This should allow him to focus on the team as a whole and allow him to focus more attention with the offensive line. Hopefully then we would be able to hire a young innovative offensive coordinator and allow Hackett to focus on developing the Quarterbacks.

  6. lordofthesith Says:

can not believe Al and Herrera still have hatred for a guy that only wanted to help. Sure, Paul Hackett is a great Coach, but obviously it’s still not sinking in for #2..maybe it never will.

Dont be so surprised that gannon is not well liked. Gannon was not well liked by his teammates when he played here either. His teammates had to respect him becuase he worked hard and produced on the field. This cat just rubs people the wrong way. We also have no idea what happened between he and davis behind closed doors. We all know davis can carry a grudge for ever.

    No Accountability. S.I. 1996
    —————————-

“The problem with the Raiders is there’s no accountability,” says one prominent veteran. “People say Al Davis is too involved. Hell, I think he should get more involved, if that’s what it would take.” Last season Davis spent less time around the players and coaches than he had in previous years, but he remained the Raiders’ absolute authority figure.
Davis has a history of undermining his coaches, and one source says that despite his lower profile in 1995, Davis pulled his share of power plays on White. Several times he showed up at practice and waited for White to approach him after drills. As White walked toward him, the source says, Davis walked away.

  15. saraider Says:

Rich Gannon was not the most athletic quarterback to have graced the S&B but he won games with his decision making. Had Gruden not given Tampa the insight we would have won that super bowl. Yet, the kool aide drinkers still insist that Al can turn this around and the fans that believe Chucky is the answer are mistaken. Until we draft better, develop talent, bring in proven vet( unlike the over the hill guys we have signed0 and give a coach continuity we will have these 5-11 seasons. Gruden will bring discipline but Al will never swallow his pride and admit that he was wrong. Gruden won with the talent that Al gave him. They needed each other. If I can remember a few years back when Kiffin was hired, some guys on this blog wanted Gannon as OC. What has happened? Al take the help, swallow your pride and do what is right. RESTORE the PRIDE And POISE back to our beloved Raiders.

Jerry Mac, your headline should read – RAIDERS LOSING ON THE FIELD AND IN THE P.R. DEPARTMENT. I mean, really, what is the administration thinking answering the Gannon thing, even if a reporter called them and asked? Silence would have been golden on this latest Gannon “issue”. All this does is stoke the flame of the Raiders being paranoid and focusing on small battles and not the important business of winning football games. Bad PR decision no matter how you slice it. More scoffing and laughing at the Raiders. It is really interesting that the Raiders operate at such as secretive level on the larger football issues, yet look like buffoons instantly responding to these small petty non-issues. Sirius NFL Radio just gained some extra listeners tomorrow to hear Gannon’s response. The fans’ talk of the need of a Raider’s GM gains credibility in my eyes. Who brought that issue up in the first place? Oh yeah, one Al Davis. They just need to learn when to be silence, and when to be responsive. The GM train gains steam…

NFL’s All Time 5 Worst General Managers.
    ————————–
    #4.

Wow, a one-time genius is now stuck in the past. When an owner/general manager continues to use the phrase “commitment to excellence” over and over again to describe a team that has a record of 29-83 since 2003, 7 consecutive seasons of 11 loses or more, and 4 coaches in 6 years, you know he’s living in the past. The once proud franchise took a page out of Daniel Snyder’s business handbook on Football management. At one time, this franchise had the greatest winning percentage in all of professional sports, was a perennial playoff team and contender year after year. Somewhere along the way, Al Davis went completely insane, hired and fired coaches over and over again, and displayed a complete lack of understanding not typical of someone in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Known as a ‘maverick’, he’s certainly that as he’s ignored the conventional wisdom of hiring good people and leaving them alone. Instead, he’s known to interfere in play calling, chasing over the hill free agents, and drafting complete duds like Jamarcus Russell whose 3 year quarterback rating is an abysmal 65.2%.

  21. Raiderjambo Says:

Could it be Gannon was not well liked by his teammates is due to the fact that he demanded more from them than any of the present Raider management or coaching staff. Maybe some of our present players(?) need somebody in their face and demanding some accountability, rather than this powder puff crap we’re being served up year after year. I’ve been a Raider fan for 30 years, and can’t believe this once proud and great franchise has been run into the ground. Our team management are a disgrace from top to bottom!

  22. Raiderbuck Says:

I was impressed that Gannon was willing to come back after he was sooo disrespected by the idiots working for AD like this bum Herrerra. What makes no sense to me, is why is this guy’s ego so inpenetrable that he isn’t willing to admit, that after the longest streak of 11+ loss seasons ever, that his way is not working! One would think that at some point, it would become clear that a change in the way YOU do business must be made. All this talk about accountability, where is Mr. Davis’ accountability? Where is his mirror for him to look into and ask himself “what can I do differently to fix this problem?” Everybody has to be accountable for their own role in this disaster, starting at the top.

Let’s see…attendence at an all time low, lowest in the league.
Team just set another NFL record with 7 consecutive 11+ loss seasons.
Offense is 31st in the league, and defense is 26th in the league.
Team goes through head coaches like pez out of a pez dispenser.
Every player who leaves can’t wait to diss the whole organization, while no players want to come here unless a Brink’s truck pulls up to their driveway.
Team is the laughingstock of the country…

yet…YOU STATE “LET’S STOP THE RAIDER HATE RIGHT NOW”???

And the “not a fan, leave now”??? So..according to you, a “fan” would put up with all of the above??

He made tony eason, and neil odonnel look like joe montana. I am suspicious of what happened after gruden left, and gannon lost his job to collins, im sure gannon wasnt ready to retire. No.2 is not a bad guy, the proper question is about his motivation. What motivated him then and has it changed? Also this shows the kind of back woods type community he is from. Lsu is in Baton Rouge, also a back water sleepy place. You give a kid 32 mil, and the culture shock of a life time, it is easy to see how he could get caught up. “captainblakck,

I have seen the greatness of Russell. i saw it when he was in college, he was amazing. we have all seen flashes here in the pro’s. 2 come from behind 4th quarter wins to knock out play off contenders at the end of 08. Also this year last second wins, in k.c, denver, and should have got the win in sd. he did that despite playing for one of the worst teams in the league! O-line is terrible, rookie receivers, and no running game to speak of, what could anyone realistically expect? Teach him what he needs to know and give him the help he needs, then we can properly judge him.”

WOW!!! Are you kidding me. Did you watch the same games I did??? Please if you have these games on VCR or if NFL network replays them please look at his actual performance. I mean JR made what they in Tennis call many many *unforced errors* If I have to be blind and dumb and out of reality to be a Raiders fan then I am getting off this bus. Come on enough with the excuses. He was the main reason there was no running game!!!! They could confidently stack the box because they had no fear that JR would burn them or if he did it would be rare enough to be worth it. If I had to scheme against the Raiders with JR that is certaintly be what I would do. I know anything I say here will not effect the “true believer” but please be objective and really look at his actual play – he was terrible!!! Were there other problems – of course but you need to look at his actual play! Cutler for instance is a QB that you could make excuses for with what he had in Chicago but JR was just flat out bad even with the problems.

Also JH reply to Gannon shows how small and petty the Raiders have become! Why not say something postive such as “Gannon was a great player for us and it is great that he is interested in seeing us get better just like we all are.”

Two other quick points about JR

    1. Remember they spent the entire pre-season emphasizing the passing game and he still sucked, and

    2. If they would have benched JR after the pre-season for his terrible performance the Raiders likely would have been playing for a wildcard last Sunday. By the way it is not just me that believes this, even Pat Kirwin said the Raiders would have at least been 6-6 after 12 games on NFL network if they did this.

  92. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

It’s more Cable’s fault than it is Russell. IF we’re going to play this game and pretend it’s not Al’s fault, or just accept that Al’s never going to leave, whatever, and drop blame elsewhere, it has to be the next in command in regards to football decisions, and that is Tom Cable. Tom Cable could have benched Russell. Can an owner fire a head coach for cause just for benching a player? That seems performance related, to me. That seems like it would be tough for Al to demonstrate as “cause” in an arbitration hearing. After all, what is a coach? How does the league, or arbitration, to be more specific, define a “head coach”? Kiffin tried to fire someone, so that hurts him. Anyhow, my point is, there is so much Cable could have done as a head coach. He’s a weak puppet. Either that or Al really gave him control and he himself decided to play Russell all year, and ground an effective run game. Either way, bye, Cable.

  93. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

It’s time to yank the cable out of the ground and get a dish.

  94. Silver-n-Smac Says:

    Raideralex909:

Of course it’s his fault! When the hell did I ever say otherwise?

If you’ve read my posts about JaMarcus, I’ve repeatedly said that he’s a young kid, a good kid, who continues to make all the WRONG decisions.

He’s been a horrible football player and not a good teammate. He has not been a horrible guy.

    He’s young and immature.

But he’s human, and believe it or not, people do mature over time and do improve themselves as human beings, regardless if they work at Walmart or run the freakin’ NFL.

The ball’s in his court. Either he steps up this off-season, grows up, works hard like a mother-fioker, or his career’s over.

    Simple as that.

He wouldn’t be the first 24 year old who just doesn’t get it yet.

    He may never get it.

But I don’t know that and neither do you.

I’m not making any excuses for him. Bottom line is that he’s started about 28 football games in his career (not even 2 years).

In most of those games, he’s sucked.

But anybody with a good heart can take a look in the mirror and improve themselves if they care enough.

Just curious – why do you suppose a guy like Cliff Branch sucked until year #3?

Why did Kenny Stabler not start until year #5?

The bottom line is that regardless of the money being thrown in his face, different people evolve in different ways.

JaMarcus may be the next Ryan Leif and he may be the next Vince Young.

    We’ll see. . . . . .

  95. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

It’s not Russell’s fault. Russell doesn’t put himself into the lineup. Cable could have started Gradkowski in week 3, when it was obvious Russell isn’t ready to start and may very well be a bust. You play your best players, always. On the head coach. Can an owner fire a head coach for “cause” just for benching a player? Kiffin tried to fire Rob Ryan. That’s what’s going to burn him. But benching someone? That seems performance related. Al can fire him for it, but he has to pay him. Point being, Cable had no excuse to play Russell when it was obvoius Russell wasn’t the best QB on our roster, other than that he buckled under Al’s pressure. Useless puppet coach. So I, as a fan, would like to see him gone. No puppet is going to get this team anywhere, considering they’re a puppet for an 80 year old man who has no clue what he’s doing. The only other scenario is that Al gave Cable control and he made all of these decisions on his own, which would also be even more reason to kick his fat ass back to the linemen’s sled, where he belongs.

  96. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

I have a new nickname for Cable, btw.

Unreal. Sleazeball Hererra still dogging on Gannon. And dumsh1ts like priesttj eating it all up. Gannon did more for the Raiders than Herrera will EVER do. Gannon did more for the Raiders than that fat lazy slob of a QB will ever do. Yet all these morons show for it is hate.

    ^^^^^^^^^^^
It’s not “all these morons” just a select few of Al Davis and John Herrera worshippers who need to be exorcised of the evil demons possessing them and their idiotic ways. LOL

  134. NorthernD Says:

IMO, it is a bit egotistical for Gannon to offer his help through the media, and is good for a little free advertising for his radio show.
But I’m sure he honestly believes he can help. He was never the most talented QB, and was successful through hard work. That’s what he knows.
Who knows, maybe his request was blocked before it even got to Al. Going through the media guarantees Al will know about his offer.

Patience is a virtue most fans do not possess. There is much wisdom waiting until FACTS are revealed but of course that belies the description of the word fanatic. Wisdom is not a quality they value.

How about seven years of patience?

  137. Try Some Reality Says:

Where did Albert find this Herrera cat anyway? Is there any other team in the league that would publicly dog and clown on a former player? A good player at that. Anyone that would stoop to this level? WOW. Unreal!

  138. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Raider O, the only way to expose Gannon as having an agenda, or whatever, is to take him up on his offer. Offer him a job. If he waffles out, then he most certainly has an agenda, and was probably being sarcastic and making fun of the team. The only way to know is to offer him a job. If the Raiders don’t, then they obviously think they’re too good for Rich Gannon. Do you believe that? That we wouldn’t use Rich around the facility, straightening things out?

  139. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Raider O, LMAO at the Raiders current organization. Gannon would make it all less funny, that’s for sure. People don’t like him. But one thing he’s proven to do is straighten teams out.

Did any of you watch Rich Gannon when he played in Oakland. He gave us everything he had and then some.

He has been critical of the Raiders for the same reason most of us die hard fans are critical of the Raiders. Because they continue to be the laughing stock of the NFL and he is probably just as damn embarassed as we are by Al Davis and his stupid staff that only stay here because they can’t get jobs anywhere else.

If gannon wants to help bring his ass here give him some damn power and lets see if JokeMarcus can actually play QB !!!

The Raiders I have loved for the last 38 years are gone, and I’ll take anyone who can bring them back!!!!

  164. NorthernD Says:

I don’t know if Gannon would make a good coach. He was an overacheiving QB, so he has knowledge of the game and knows how to maximize player’s abilities.

But he might also be too tough on the player’s and expect the same level of intensity that he had.
Pete Rose was the ultimate hard worker, but was lousy as a manager (no betting jokes). He expected all his players to run through walls all the time. And they couldn’t.
Gannon might just be too demanding to be effective.

  165. Raider O Says:

Jerry rice wasn’t great just off talent he was great because he worked to become great, nnamdi asomugha worked to be great, jamarcus will never reach this level of greatness because he doesn’t have the desire to be great nor the personality that suggest he ever will develop the mentality to be great. The players are gonna have to lean new schemes and warm up to the new coach and there’s no guarantee they’re going to like the new coach, and I doubt they will give him a fair shake because they really like tom cable. This team is easily broken and you’re talking of getting rid of the first coach since gruden that has them glued together. We didn’t win many games this year and its obvious to see it wasn’t coaching that was the number 1 downfall it was the sorry ass qb who cares about nothing but bling bling, fur coats, and trips to vegas than the damn team, but some fans are to blind to see that because they’re too busy sucking als chico stick to realize it.smh Cable is not the problem. And bringing in a new coach will set this team back because they believe in cable and they’re going to be pissed if he’s fired because of a qb they hate. you think they hate jamarcus now, but if cable is fired because of him they’re really not gonna play for his lard ass next season and you can kiss nnamdi good bye because he will surely leave for another team and I can’t blame em.As a matter of fact what ever team he goes to I will be cheering.

  189. Demon Raider Says:

I have a ton of respect for Gannon. He was our leader for 4 years and he won an MVP with us. Sure he threw 5 picks in our last S.B., but he was going against the #1 defense that year. He is truthful and he’ll tell it like it is. That is what JaMarcus Russell needs. He needs someone who tell him to his face what he needs to work on and Gannon won’t sugarcoat anything for the sake of Russell’s ego and complacency. Herrera is a dumbass for acting the way he does. Anyone else remember when he tried to get into a fight with Tim Kawakami? Al Davis is right about one thing, firing everyone and starting fresh, clean. Oh, I wasn’t talking about the coaching staff, I was talking about the front office. I think that in terms of the coaching staff, we namely just need an OC. What we need the most is a GM who can run this team from the front office and for Davis to just hand his baby off and step away. We need to let Russell know that he is here to do a job and he better get serious and do that job and immerse himself in learning the techniques and the throws.

  191. Chris in NY Says:

The rebuff of Gannon was predictable.

The defense of JaMarcus is what worries me somewhat. What exactly is he doing in Vegas that excused him from the team.

This is just a wild theory, particularly because I don’t even know if Jim Fassel resides in Vegas right now, but …

Jim Fassel just won the UFL Championship with the Las Vegas franchise. He was also seen at the Raiders-Redskins game days before his UFL QB J.P. Losman was signed by the Raiders. Could Al already have Fassel lined up as the next HC of the Raiders? Could JaMarcus be meeting with Fassel right now to a) Set up an off-season workout plan, get a little mentoring and have a sit-down with his next HC or b) Give Fassel a chance to size up JaMarcus and see if he’s worth keeping around in 2010. Could the unnamed Raiders employee with JaMarcus be special teams coach and Jim Fassel’s son, John Fassel? Just some speculation, but I wouldn’t be shocked.

  192. VanHeathen Says:

Al lof these ‘enablers’ that keep propping JR up, are the PROBLEM.

I don’t think there’s any doubt about that. Probably 2 or 3 at least. If I were they, I certainly would in order to keep my finger on the pulse. I also wouldn’t be surprised if some of these moles promoted themselves to the organization as providing an inside ear to report back what’s being said by the commoners. In exchange for this service, they’d get some special perks like inside information, visiting rights at HQ, etc. It all makes sense to me. Now, let’s see, who on this blog fits that mold?

  195. Demon Raider Says:

I have to admit that with the exception of the 2 turnovers, JaMarcus did look pretty decent when he took over for Frye against the Ravens. I think that what they’ll do is hang onto JaMarcus until the final cut and if they see that he’s lost weight and that he’s finally taking things seriously in his work ethic and in his learning his skill, then we will keep him. On the flip side, if he’s still the same old fat ass, he’s gonna get cut….

    ******************************

He is due 3 million no matter what and we don’t have to pay him the remaining 6.45 million until the season starts and they are split up into 16 game checks. That is why I said that we will most likely make our decision on JaMarcus during the final cuts…. I am actually starting to like the QB from Central Michigan, Dan LaFevour. I just don’t know how well he’d transition to the pro game since spending his college career in the spread offense….

  201. Demon Raider Says:

I would love to see us draft OL and DL first. I think we namely just need a good OC and for Al Davis to get the hell outta our game plans. Am I the only one who has seen how effective our defense is when we get things going with blitzes??

  204. Chris in NY Says:

    Demon,

Good points. Wasn’t aware of the payout schedule. In that case it does make sense to keep JaMarcu around and see if he wakes up before cutting him loose. We’re sure as hell not going to get anything in trade for him — especially with that salary.

Plus, as Jerry pointed out in an earlier blog entry, it would send a stronger message to the rest of the team to cut him right before the season if he’s slacking rather than do it now and make it a distant memory by the time the season starts.

I suppose they could renegotiate the $6.45 million portion of the deal at that time. Under almost no circumstance could I see them paying this guy $9.45 million next season unless he turns into the black Peyton Manning all of a sudden.

  207. NorthernD Says:

You may be right about John Fassel going with JaMarcus to Las Vegas.
Fassel doesn’t get out much, so JaMarcus was going to use his connections and get him into the “champagne room.”

  208. Kirk Says:

What “company business” was Russell doing at the Palms?

  209. Demon Raider Says:

I wish he’d turn into the Black Peyton. He has shown potential, small one-play flashes. lol. Jim Fassel wouldn’t be a bad OC, IMO. Better then Cable anyways. JHIll, the defense would be a lot better if Al would stay out of the game plan and let Marshall coach. If DT Gerald McCoy is there with the 8th pick, there is no reason why we shouldn’t draft him. There will be good RTs and RGs available in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Maybe have our first 4 pick be DT, RT, RG, and LB in no particular order. Altho I would love to trade Fargas and draft RB Ryan Mathews…

  210. Zymurge Says:

The doom and gloom is pretty impressive in it’s totality here. Over the last few days I’ve read all of the following (some of which I agree with, other parts, not so much):

    - We have the worst owner in football
    - We have the worst GM (the owner) in football
    - We have the worst HC in football
    - We had horrible play calling
    - We have the worst coaching staff in football
    - We had the worst QB in football for 9 plus games
    - Our O line is horrible
    - We have one of the weakest receiving corp in football due to lack of experience and/or hands
    - Our D line needs massive improvement
    - Our LB corp is over-matched
    - We had no depth in the secondary
    - We had no real FB

So aside from having hot cheerleaders and two kickers that played well, what exactly did work this season?

Not that I’m satisfied with the results, but this team did win 5 games. This team had 7 other teams — over 20% of the league, finish lower (based on draft order) than the Raiders did.

If you look at the list above and buy into most of it, would you have said that a team with those “credentials” would do anything but go 0-16? If so, I’d say that you were looking through Silver and Black colored glasses. You certainly wouldn’t have predicted that a team so dysfunctional would beat several division leading teams.

So maybe, just maybe, not everything on this team is as horked as it’s made out to be here. Maybe there are a lot of things going right that are just being buried due to a few glaring holes. This is a game of cause and effect. One thing goes bad and everything else starts looking suspect. Too many offensive turnovers and 3 and outs and the D gets tired and makes mental mistakes. No faith in the QBs ability to get the ball on target, and WRs start altering their routes. No threat of a passing game, the opposing D stacks 9 in the box stuffing the run before it even starts. And a team unable to execute on plays because they can’t pass accurately makes things like the preparation and play calling suspect.

So you fix the QB position first. And they finally were able to do that. Things got notably better, even including winning some games. Without the gaping hole in the passing game, the O line play became more apparent. It wasn’t totally horked but it showed that a couple players on the line could be upgraded. And I assert that with that next change alone (and no regression back to a forced JR starting) this would suddenly become an above average offense. As a result, the defensive play would improve with more rest and more faith in the offense to do its part. And then the play calling wouldn’t be questioned as often and the coaching staff not as scrutinized.

Of course we’d still have the big man upstairs (in the luxury booth) still making bizarre calls with the first picks, but that’s not quite as fixable.

    Easy to say.
The problem might be that Cable is “supposed” to be an O-line guru. He’s supposed to be able to work wonders with whatever Al gives him.
Last year at the draft, he said they had enough talent there, and they didn’t need to draft an O-lineman.
Madden said he would fight with Al to get O-line picks. Cable doesn’t have enough clout to argue for O-linemen.

  226. djohnnyg Says:

    # 194,

They would not be making excuses for a guy who blew off a team meeting to go gamble and party in Vegas unless………..they just don’t want to look bad when Russell spits in their face and says “screw you, i’m going to Vegas”.

I tend to think your speculation makes sense.

Well, welcome aboard Coach Fassel…You think?

  227. GG Says:

Is there any validity in the conspiracy theory that Davis is deliberating reducing the value of the Raiders in order to minimize the inheritance tax that would fall on his heir?

    Consider this…

Under current law, the IRS has a prearranged method for determining if an inheritance tax is due on property or monies received. You must remember that the settling of an estate is a complicated matter. An attorney or tax accountant ought to be referred to in inheritance situations where matters of the law are involved, such as the probate process, also known as contesting of the will.

“The first step used to determine any inheritance tax that might be due is to calculate the fair market value of the entire estate,” says Money-Zine.com. “This would include cash, bank accounts, stocks and bonds, real state, insurance, and similar items of value. The total fair market value of all these items is termed the Gross Estate. The next step would be to calculate any adjustments to the gross estate. Typical adjustments include paying-off the remaining balance on a mortgage or the fees associated with settling the estate. This last item might include items such as estate administration fees or payments made to an attorney. Finally, there is also a Marital Deduction that can be taken for property that is left to a surviving spouse.”

After all the deductions have been taken from the gross estate, the balance is the net value of the property – otherwise known as the inheritance tax basis. To determine whether or not any inheritance tax is due, subtract the net value of the property from the inheritance tax credits.

  235. GG Says:

Not bring down to utter ruin, no cos he would want the org to continue and ensure his son have a lifetime income. But by the process around inheritance tax, you can reduce the value of an org enough to either a) minimize greatly how much the tax will be, or b) even avoid inheritance tax altogether. Consider other things too like Al throwing excessive amounts of money into FAs and rookies. Over-paying excessively for rookies when he doesnt need to. Who knows what other things he’s doing to reduce his net value, including selling off percentage of ownership etc etc.

Fans have the power to force change by boycotting ticket sales, merchandise, etc, ownership in the end cannot ignore this and will always (bar Davis) make efforts to ensure the fans are happy with the “product” to keep consuming it. Sporting market out there no different to any industry today. Teams and leagues cannot take a fan for granted or think they wouldn’t take their money and go support another team.

    ————————————————————————————————————–

This would make sense if it was coupled with what someone said earlier about they heard a Cable interview and Cable said JaMarcus told him he had to miss meeting to tend to personal matter in Bama. 245. djohnnyg Says:

Really pi$$ed off when I read that Russell had gone straight to Vegas.Hey !! It’s got nothing to do with me how he spends his money, but it came over like it was an inconvenience,he couldn’t wait one day more ?

I don’t think he gets it.I don’t think he gets how bad he played.

  282. hwnrdr Says:

    Good Morning Nation!!!
    That is what I say…
Let him compete for the job this year. Don’t just give it to him. Garcia asked for his release because it was made clear to him that he’s not going to push Russell for the job and I think that was a mistake. Russell went in there (after SD on Monday) knowing that he is the guy and therefore had no desire to work harder!
Let him compete for the job…if he doesn’t work out, then do what you want with him.
I agree R8dr4lfe…he actually did not look bad on Sunday. Who knows…

Also he is not the only Raider there maybe the others are the QB’s i mean we dont know we just react.

Jmac is called dumb, i will give you lazy but he is not dumb he scored higher then so many other QB’s some witch are in the Hall Of Fame on his wonderlic test.

My point exactly lets blame the whole team, we cant let them off easy. They want the blame on Russell so they can fade away and not get any blame. Calling out the whole team puts all of them on blast not just Jmac.
If Jmac comes in and puts up monster numbers but the rest of the team suck what good is that. Cable calling out his QB the way he did was only to get the attention off of himself for losing games by blow outs not to mention his off the field issues. He whent for the easy target cause how many would question Jmacs work ethic we know he didnt work hard. Like i said thats his reason not working hard enough, what about the rest of the hard workers on the team that still sucked?

Im sure that he can get in touch with people in mobile that will set him straight, I hope he is still willing to listen. Look at this clip, then add this information to the ability he was born with, then review your opinion of him.

7 years later enter Jmac. What a beautiful family and a wonderful safety-net of a community he has!

Yep,humble kid,GOOD HEARTED KID….He is just like Sea-Bass in a way, altho we cant compare Alabama to Poland. But still Jmac went Nuckin-Futs just like Sea-Bass at St.

I was one of his biggest supporters but am very critical now.I hope he restructures and can stay and learn.Vs. Ravens he looked better and crisper than ever, imo.

I’m thinking we have a 53 who is very fast, and we 91 who is good at rushing the passer, so maybe all we are missing is that force in the middle.

We need RT, RG, C, and FB on Offense.

I heard J Campbell will be a FA, and I think we should sign him, but we need to cut TK, Warren, Walker, Euk, and fargas to make room to sign players.
We should Move Seymour to DT (after we sign him), draft a DE, DT, MLB, CB, and that will give us a good Defense that can help our very young offense.

In Russell’s and his family and friends eyes, no matter what happens he will be a success. Who am I to tell them what defines “success”, but as I’ve said a million times, Russell, in his eyes, already made it to the top of the mountain.

I see a lot of posts about “What can Gannon do for the Raiders?”

    Excuse me?

First and for most he can show JaChubby what it takes to be a first class QB in this league. Day in and day out routine that needs to be accomplished. That nothing comes easy – Something that no coach on the Raiders staff has done on their own. Yeah I agree that Hackett is the best man for the QB coach and Gannon won’t add much there. The intangibles that come with a NFL QB? I think he can show the pup 1000 things, things like don’t go to Vegas after you just let your whole team down. Things like you stay and watch the film and see what you did wrong and make a plan to NOT do it again. Things like lead your team and show the a work ethic that is second to none.

Yeah, what the F u(k can he do?

Herrera is a complete moron and should not be shown to the public – he’s a worse embarrassment than Emperor Al trying to run a football team using the force. If that looser thinks Gannon has nothing to offer, it just goes to show you he knows nothing about how to work for a NFL football team.

  345. Raider O Says:

I think we are much closer to having a complete good unit on Defense, than we are with our young offense. IMO

Fix the Defense and add OL depth with the draft, and add some players from FA like a QB, WR, G, C, and even a RT.

Also cut Cooper, green, Pears, and both FBs.

I was watching NFLN the other day, and they had the top 10 LBs. The Raiders were # 8 ( I think). They talked about how 53 was a speed guy, 55 was a force in the middle, and 83 was tall and good at rushing the passer. I’m thinking we have a 53 who is very fast, and we 91 who is good at rushing the passer, so maybe all we are missing is that force in the middle.

Oakland Ledger staff and wire report

    Posted: 01/07/2010 07:23:00 AM PST

John Fiensberg, agent for Raiders Quarterback Bruce Gradkowski, has told the press that he has been informed by the Oakland Raiders that his client will not be retained when he becomes a free agent this offseason and that the quarterback that gave so many fans so much hope for the future after replacing embattled quarterback Jamarcus Russell, should seek opportunities with other teams as soon as the free agency period begins on February 27th, 2010. This news seems to indicate that the Oakland Raiders fully intend on moving forward with Russell as the franchise quarterback despite questions about his attitude and work ethic.

  398. GG Says:

La Milicia Negra imo was spot on saying Herrera is a liar, just spinning the news to not make the Raiders look stupid. But everyone knows upper management is stupid, and asleep most of the time.

I also like the comments by Raiderzmaverick about how ass-backwards the upper management is that they’d ostracize Gannon and try to ban him, and say nasty things about him, yet do so much to feather Russell’s ass. It’s a perfect indictment on how out of touch and deranged upper management is.

I also wouldn’t be surprised if Davis sees 2008/9 the same way….both coaches failed to turn Russell into a “great” QB, and would be thinking “got to get another coach and another OC etc to turn my $40m investment into a SB winner” rather than accepting his own draft picks blow and that he’s already flushed $40m down the toilet on a bust. Hence, Fassell, Gilbride brought in mainly for that reason.

It’s also interesting how Gradkowski was stressing how he really hopes it truly is an open QB competition next year. Cos he’s intimating how it’s been in 2009 already, Davis insisting on his draftees starting, Cable hamstrung, having to toe the line to have a job, and the players all aware of the sacred cow (russell) and despising him.

When you have Herrera being such a vile idiot it clearly reveals how nuts Davis has become. A literal tyrant badly out of touch. How he would even get so offended by Gannon doing his job and justifiably constructively criticizing what’s wrong inside the Raiders. How he would be so insistent being told he’s a genius and is always right and makes the best picks etc etc.

  399. new englandraider Says:

  414. GG Says:

    Hobs Gnarly…
I think Al’s mind is self-poisoned and these sycophants in upper management just go along with everything, sell their souls to him for the money/job. And/or he’s surrounded himself by people who literally think exactly the way he does, see things the way he does (like, Amy) so therefore he’d always seem in the right, never contradicted, always validated he’s doing the right thing.

Just like how on this message board, you get a lot of pro-Al people who all pat each other on the back-side and defend their common beliefs/goals…while we have all the realists who do the same but at least they’re on the side of Truth and Common Sense.

It shocked the hell out of me so I know it shocked the hell out Gannon. I Know, Still no excuse for countless interceptions.
I will remember Rich gannon for all the great games he had with the Raiders. The Raiders had more great times with Gannon than bad. I will not let the bad times with him outlive the good.

Here’s how OUT OF TOUCH I think Al Davis & his cronies are right now.

They attack Ricky’s because if puts up pictures of Jon Gruden having fun with Raider Fans. They attack Rich Gannon because he offers help.

It seems they are attacking the only good thing to ever happen to them since the return to Oakland.

In fact, if you read the past, when there was talk of Jon Gruden coming back I remember Herrera issuing a press statement stating how Gruden is “an an average-at-best coach who we are not interested in”. The press statement was really insulting to him actually. And we tried to BAN Gannon from entering the colesium.

Now, it seems to me that the priorities are WAY OFF and someone is really giving bad advice here. Why go out of your way to attack coaches and players who were successful for your organization and are open to coming back to help?

Maybe they got too much attention instead of Herrera and Davis? Who knows. All I know is that now this Bull $hit is continuing and these same schmucks are issing statements how Russell is GREAT and we know he’s in Vegas and we’re happy about it. What $hit.

But there were plenty of high spots. In Game 2, against Washington, a block by Smith sealed the edge on a 58-yard run by Jackson — his longest gain of the year. The play set up the Rams’ first touchdown of the season and gave them their first lead of the season.

In the first Arizona game, on Nov. 22, blocks by Smith and tight end Randy McMichael helped spring Jackson on a 48-yard run that set up a Rams field goal.

The gain put Jackson over 1,000 yards for a franchise-record fifth consecutive season.”
    ))))))))

Smith was getting it going…was DHB ever said to be getting it going? I don’t think so…

And according to his HC, they are moving forward as if Smith will be fine for next season.

I’d trade DHB for Smith in a heartbeat…at least Smith has a chance to be a good player…DHB needs a hand transplant.

Hey John, this isn’t golf, you retard (sorry, that’s an offense to all mentally challenged people out there who are far more competant than Herrera). In football you actually try to SCORE points. This team hasn’t done that. Bring Gannon in to assist Paul Hackett (who is great but clearly needs help). Get over the fact that you and your team suck (I say this with all the love I have for the Raiders and Raider Nation) and take the help from the best QB this team has had since Jim Plunkett. Or maybe you should go see what Marc Wilson is doing these days. I hear Jeff George still wants to play. Gannon rescinds offer to help JaMarcus
Posted by Michael David Smith on January 7, 2010 2:14 PM ET
After former Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon said that he’d love to help current Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell, Raiders senior executive John Herrera smacked the offer down by saying, “It’s Rich that needs the help.”

Today Gannon said on his Sirius radio show that he was surprised by the harsh reaction to a sincere offer of assistance, and that he won’t make such an offer again.

“You know, it’s amazing,” Gannon said, per David White of the San Francisco Chronicle. “You try just to reach out to somebody and say something, that maybe you can help a young guy, and you get criticized for it.”

Gannon said he simply viewed Russell as a quarterback who might benefit from talking to someone who’s been there before, but that he won’t try to interfere if he isn’t wanted.

“I just was really looking at a young guy that’s really struggled and just thought that I could reach out to help him out,” Gannon said. “I was just looking to figure out a way to go out there and share with them some of the things that helped me as a player and prepare and get myself ready not only for the season but for games each week. I’ve done it with Aaron Rodgers and I’ve done it with quarterbacks in Tampa and Minnesota. But, hey, trust me, I won’t make that call again.”

And so the quarterback who completed 67.6 percent of his passes for the Raiders in 2002 will not be offering any advice to the quarterback who completed 48.8 percent of his passes for the Raiders in 2009.

    Dknight007,

Thanks for the number I called and it was awesome.

Rich Gannon is bitter. The fact it after his injury he was shown the door. He rehabbed all year, but wasnt cleared by the raiders, to play the following year, he had to retire. It was not only the raiders not give him
a shot, but no other team was interested in the former mvp. He was old and rightfully finished. Im sure Gannon wanted to hang on, he was the ultimate competitor. Gannon probably blames the raiders for the horrible end to his career. He did play the worst super bowl in history, then the next year he is injured, boom career over. This must have left a terrible after taste in his mouth that he is still sucking on. who knows what happened between Davis and Gannon, once he was informed that his services would not be retained. Knowing how strong willed and bull headed both parties are, it couldnt have been pretty. This smells like gannon having a laugh at the raiders expense. In this way he is able to be a thorn in davis’s side. much the same warren sapp has an axe to grind because davis saw that he was finished. Even Tim brown has fallen victim to this behavior. Disgruntled former athletes, showing a real lack of class.

You think Chris Long and Jason Smith were good draft picks the last two years at #2? Most people say those picks haven’t panned out, just like DHB. They passed on Matt Ryan and Mark Sanchez, and could draft a big flop at QB this year.

Michael Oher was the “best prospect coming out since Orlando Pace”

He goes to the combine, and after that BS called Combine he was the 4th rated OT, so he was passed by 22 teams until Ravens got him 23. One year later he was voted number 2 for Offensive Rookie of the Year after Percy Harvin.

The Combine is a BS, and drafting in the top 10 doesnt mean drafting more talent, and also means the player will be considered a bust if he doesnt produce since Day 1.

TRADE OUT OF THE TOP 10!!!

Jim Harbaugh a “stealth” candidate for Bills, Raiders jobs

There has been some speculation that the Buffalo Bills (who don’t currently have a head coach) and the Oakland Raiders (who currently do) could be interested in hiring Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh.

A league source tells us that it’s more than speculation; the brother of Ravens coach John Harbaugh is, we’re told, a “stealth” candidate for both jobs.

Secrecy is critical (oops) because Jim Harbaugh currently is in the midst of recruiting season. If Harbaugh acknowledges that he’s a candidate for any job other than the one he has, his recruits will scatter like members of the Cardinal band in the end zone of a game that isn’t yet over.

For any college coach plotting a move, the news needs to come swiftly or not at all, and Harbaugh will have to use the “I’m not going to be the Alabama coach” routine until, you know, he ultimately becomes the Alabama coach.

(Then again, there’s a chance that Jim Harbaugh is already the Baltimore coach.)

In NFL coaching circles, neither the Bills job nor the Raiders job is regarded as incredibly attractive. But the reality is that there are only 32 jobs in NFL head-coaching circles, and Jim Harbaugh simply doesn’t strike us as a guy who is destined to spend his career as a college head coach. With his brother making it to the playoffs twice in his first two seasons with the Ravens, the interest in the Harbaugh who was a pretty good pro quarterback only will increase.

  632. OFL71 Says:

Harbaugh already “declined” last year saying he was staying in Stanford.
Why the hell would he come to Oakland this year when the exact same situation exists?
And is Jim Harbaugh really the answer for a team like The Raiders?
What exactly has Stanford accomplished during his tenure…?
    Not much.
I don’t see Harbaugh turning it around in Oakland.

  633. OFL71 Says:

IMO the only thing that will make a difference(coaching wise)is a big name proven winner who can bring in his own staff and possibly call shots on who the GM/DFO will be.
That DOES NOT happen in Oakland so it will just be another gutless puppet doin what he’s told.

  634. OFL71 Says:

Kiffin doesn’t seem so bad after all.
At least he had the balls to stand up to Alice, even if he was kinda weaselly.
