Raiders OK with Russell, still mad at Gannon

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, January 6th, 2010 at 5:12 pm in Oakland Raiders.

For the record, the Raiders aren’t overly concerned with the Las Vegas excursion by JaMarcus Russell, saying he was in Sin City accompanied by someone with the club, and have no intention of taking Rich Gannon up on his offer to help the team reverse the tide of seven consecutive losing seasons.

Steve Corkran followed up on both issues today with senior executive John Hererra, who confirmed, “JaMarcus was in Las Vegas, and he was there with a (Raiders staff member). He was there for a legitimate reason.”

As for Gannon, Herrera’s company line made it clear the former MVP is persona non grata in Alameda.

“It’s Rich that needs the help,” Herrera said. “When he goes on a radio show offering Mr. Davis help, Tom Cable help, the Raiders help, maybe it’s Rich that needs the help.”

Herrera also said, “What does Rich Gannon think he has to offer that Paul Hackett can’t contribute, when he himself said Paul Hackett is the best quarterbacks coach that he ever had?”

The Raiders have also signed practice squad player to a future’s contract, tying him to the Raiders into next season. Wide receiver Paul Hubbard, center Tim Mattran, quarterback Jeff Otis and guard Brandon Robb were not retained.

In other news, according to Raiders.com, linebacker Sam Williams is the team’s nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award, given for service to the community.

Someone need’s to bash Herrera’s head in and no no no wait let me see….someone needs to grab Herrera’s hair in the back of his head, drop him to the curb of a street (66th Ave.), make him look at the Coliseum while they open his mouth, stick it on the curb and STOMP ON THE BACK OF HIS HEAD!!!!!!!

DHB might have fallen to the 3rd round, highly likely.
Mitchell would have been available even later than that(don’t believe that BS that the Bears were about to take him).
Murphy looks like a possible steal if he can get a consistent QB.
Other than Murphy last years draft was another debacle.
All 3 USC LB are gonna be studs and we passed ‘em by like a dirty hitchiker,Crabtree is headstrong but he’s got skill, way more upside than DHB,every year for the last 8 drafts or so I watch all these great young players skip right by as Al plucks these fu(kin bums outta nowhere.
He deserves the “futility of the Raiders”,cause the “Greatness of the Raiders” is a ghost.

    :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

there were about 8 wideouts taken in the 1st round last year…

someone was gonna take this guy…

Shaunessy looks like a pretty good pick, same with Myers.

To give hime some credit, Al has made some pretty good picks the past few drafts. It’s just the big money first round picks suck. Maybe thats why he traded next years 1st for Seymour.

    Dakota,

and with the eighth pick in the draft the Oakland Raiders choose Jahvid Best, running back, University of California.

he’s really fast, seldom breaks a tackle, needs holes the size of a freight car…Raiders already got one of those types at RB, but the more the merrier (although Jahvid is not known to suffer greatly from fumble-itis)

Russell,DMAC,DHB all players who have not come even close to the production of players picked after them.

The more I look at things, I am pretty confidant Al will take Tim Tebow with our second round pick.

Al always talks about TD’s right? Tebow has the most collegiate TD’s ever I think. Physical specimens? Tebow is a pretty impressive athlete and will be a combine wonder. Think any other QB will bench more than Tebow? What about run faster?

Bring on the bible-thumper. Maybe the Oakland Raiders can be the Tebow families next big reclamation project for JC.

I think a lot of our problems with our first round picks have to do with the way they have been handled.

From Gallery being constantly shifted around, through Huff being played out of position to Russell not being in camp on time and not being given the proper guidance and leadership and being enabled by Al “Players Rule, Coaches Drool” Davis.

Sometimes I think it wouldn’t have mattered who we picked, Al would just fuk them up no matter who they were.

Oakland Raiders…where talented first round players go to die.

For whatever reason top 10 picks are huge busts.

Go through any draft and you will find just as many top 10 busts as Pro Bowlers.

Look at this years top 10: DHB, Jason Smith, Andre Smith, Tyvon Jackson (KC pick)….all big flops who literally did nothing this year. DHB might be the most productive of that group, lol.

Who is a Pro Bowler from this top 10 draft? The best guys are Cushing who was 13th or something and Oher who was 21st.

The money ruins some of the kid’s I think.

Here’s how OUT OF TOUCH I think Al Davis & his cronies are right now.

They attack Ricky’s because if puts up pictures of Jon Gruden having fun with Raider Fans. They attack Rich Gannon because he offers help.

It seems they are attacking the only good thing to ever happen to them since the return to Oakland.

In fact, if you read the past, when there was talk of Jon Gruden coming back I remember Herrera issuing a press statement stating how Gruden is “an an average-at-best coach who we are not interested in”. The press statement was really insulting to him actually. And we tried to BAN Gannon from entering the colesium.

Now, it seems to me that the priorities are WAY OFF and someone is really giving bad advice here. Why go out of your way to attack coaches and players who were successful for your organization and are open to coming back to help?

Maybe they got too much attention instead of Herrera and Davis? Who knows. All I know is that now this Bull $hit is continuing and these same schmucks are issing statements how Russell is GREAT and we know he’s in Vegas and we’re happy about it. What $hit.

  • Carl Weathers

Al will never draft another QB as long as he lives.

I got the best draft to piss everyone off:

    Round 1- Joe Haden
    Round 2- Tim Tebow
    Round 3- Syd’Quan Thomspson
    Round 3- Demarco Murray

2 DB’s, an unknown QB and a RB.

It’s almost more fun coming up with who we THINK Al will draft, not who he SHOULD draft.

  • raiderzmaverick

I hope he doesn’t draft any other high 1st round pick as long as he lives. He is so illogical about trying to prove that they’re good that he forces them in above all else and kills the team as they suck.

Trade the 1st round pick this year Al. Get Randy Moss back :P

  • OFL71

It’s about looking past the flash of top ten scouted players and looking for the substance of quality NFL potential.
Chris Johnson is the perfect example, the guys ridiculous and do you think Oakland gave him a sniff(if they did it was ONLY due to his speed),but Tennessee saw something because their personnel guys actually know what they’re doing.Ray Rice,Mendenhall,Felix Jones,I could go on but Al wants the headline grabbing draft pick instead of true NFL potential.

We have to break this double-digit losing streak next year. I hate this “record”. Once we break it, I think one of these other crappy teams will take it from us a few years later, but for now the record is ours.

I think the Rams have won 5 games the last 3 years combined. They are perfect candidates to take the record from us.

With any luck he’ll trade this years 1st for a real QB stuck on someones depth chart… Kolb comes to mind and I’m sure there are others.

Who am I kidding it’s gonna be Russell, Losman and some has been like mark Brunnel battling it out next year.

i hope we go oline. we have had about 30 different combinations during one season. while the JETS oline has started 30 consecutive games 2gether. our oline kills us. even more than jruss. lol. penalties, missed blocks, getting blown up at los. 60% of our oline is garbage. henderson played horribly down the stretch. gallery insists he’ll be ok, but back surgery…. maybe we’ll be ok at rg if we move langston walker there. but we need olinemen. quite a few of em

    cant post the link…

“No,” Gannon said. You know, it’s amazing. You try just to reach out to somebody and say something, that maybe you can help a young guy, and you get criticized for it. … I’m not looking for work. I have plenty of jobs that keep me busy. … People think I’m looking for a job. I’ve been offered jobs to get into coaching and to get into management. I have no interest in doing it.

“I just was really looking at a young guy that’s really struggled and just thought that I could reach out to help him out. Listen, I’m not all the king’s horses and I’m not all the king’s men. I can’t put Humpty Dumpty together again. I can’t do that. But I was just looking to figure out a way to go out there and share with them some of the things that helped me as a player and prepare and get myself ready not only for the season but for games each week. I’ve done it with Aaron Rodgers and I’ve done it with quarterbacks in Tampa and Minnesota.

“But, hey, trust me, I won’t make that call again.”

I don’t think so, injuries could happen to anyone…you are as off the mark about Jason Smith as you are about Monroe, who by season’s end was getting great reviews with the Jags.
