Raiders OK with Russell, still mad at Gannon

For the record, the Raiders aren’t overly concerned with the Las Vegas excursion by JaMarcus Russell, saying he was in Sin City accompanied by someone with the club, and have no intention of taking Rich Gannon up on his offer to help the team reverse the tide of seven consecutive losing seasons.

Steve Corkran followed up on both issues today with senior executive John Hererra, who confirmed, “JaMarcus was in Las Vegas, and he was there with a (Raiders staff member). He was there for a legitimate reason.”

As for Gannon, Herrera’s company line made it clear the former MVP is persona non grata in Alameda.

“It’s Rich that needs the help,” Herrera said. “When he goes on a radio show offering Mr. Davis help, Tom Cable help, the Raiders help, maybe it’s Rich that needs the help.”

Herrera also said, “What does Rich Gannon think he has to offer that Paul Hackett can’t contribute, when he himself said Paul Hackett is the best quarterbacks coach that he ever had?”

The Raiders have also signed practice squad player to a future’s contract, tying him to the Raiders into next season. Wide receiver Paul Hubbard, center Tim Mattran, quarterback Jeff Otis and guard Brandon Robb were not retained.

In other news, according to Raiders.com, linebacker Sam Williams is the team’s nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year award, given for service to the community.

  • New Englandraider,

Toney Gaffney? yeah, I think he was on the pre-season roster for the Lakers…why, did we sign him or something?

  • Tony…sorry

  • Dakota,

Smith struggled through 5 games and was out with a bruised coconut. Heard Clayton on ESPN talk about worries it might be career-ending.

And he was the #2 pick, 5 slots ahead of DHB.

    Yes, bigger flop.

  • new englandraider

ur correct. he was final cut. played at umass. outstanding defensive player. leaps out of building, blocks shots and can step out and hit the 3. he is 6-10 i think. anyway he used to date a friend of mine back when they were in college. he signed in israel. talked to my friend 2day. gaffney back here in mass because of foot injury. said lakers have promised him a contract for next season. can u say see u later josh powell

  • OFL71

The Rams are a mess…well then the Raiders are a fu(kin nightmare that you can’t wake up from.
They’re going in the right direction while Oakland takes one giant backwards leap after another.
    That’s all I’m saying.

  • “Smith also gave up a sack to Lawrence Jackson in that game, and another — to Dwight Freeney — six weeks later against Indianapolis.

But there were plenty of high spots. In Game 2, against Washington, a block by Smith sealed the edge on a 58-yard run by Jackson — his longest gain of the year. The play set up the Rams’ first touchdown of the season and gave them their first lead of the season.

In the first Arizona game, on Nov. 22, blocks by Smith and tight end Randy McMichael helped spring Jackson on a 48-yard run that set up a Rams field goal.

The gain put Jackson over 1,000 yards for a franchise-record fifth consecutive season.”

Smith was getting it going…was DHB ever said to be getting it going? I don’t think so…

And according to his HC, they are moving forward as if Smith will be fine for next season.

I’d trade DHB for Smith in a heartbeat…at least Smith has a chance to be a good player…DHB needs a hand transplant.

As a ND fan, I was not an advocate of Brady Quinn, so please do not think that the following statement is due to my allegence to ND:

I wish we could find a way to draft Jimmy Clausen…the kid is going to be a great QB.

This is more hooey from the guy who wanted THAT BUST DMAC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sad misplaced Michigan fan anger, that is what this is lol

LMAO. Misplaced? Didn’t we destroy Notre Dame this year with a last second touchdown pass?

Well he did catch a TD in his last game he played in, lol. That should be about as good as “sealing the edge”.

And no compensation for one being the #2 pick vs. #7?

maybe i smoke too much hippie lettuce. i think we are going to get a lot better next season. between, murphy shaunessy, and mitchell this yrs draft, to go along with nnamdi, huff, seymour (will be franchised), scott, chaz, t branch. man we got some talent. we really do. you seen what we can to with decent qb play. chaz being hurt killed us. i think he and murphy could be one helluva tandem. with zmill, maybe dmac and bush. we will have some weapons man. unless shaunessy and murphy regress. which i doubt. murphy improved a lot as season went on. and as i said yesterday, combine his drops with all the jruss short hops.. dude maybe could’ve had 50+ receptions

  • Post draft, trade DMAC for the rights to Clausen!

  • new englandraider

hell, i’d trade dhb for whatever u could pull out of stephen jacksons dread locks

  • OFL71,

Explain to me what the Rams have going in the right direction, besides what you have “seen”?

Not trying to be a dyk, but their record has gotten worse the last 3 years. Not raving about the success of the Raiders, but it is a lot easier getting to 9 wins when you had 5 the year before, not 5 over the last three years.

  • So with Nnamdi’s $16 million dollar franchise player-like payment in 2010, can Al afford to have the same monster franchise contract for Seymour and pay out for another top draft pick?

Better get that sale of the 10% of the franchise going here pretty soon.

John Herrera is an @$$hat!! He and Al Davis are the reasons this team has been as bad as it is. Herrera said Gannon “played the worst Super Bowl ever”? Um… John, maybe you should do your homework genius. Certainly he had a bad game, but then again he was missing his starting center, his head coach (Bill Callahan) was ENTIRELY overmatched and outcoached by the guy who built that Raider team and was then unceremoniously traded to the Bucs. Hey John, this isn’t golf, you retard (sorry, that’s an offense to all mentally challenged people out there who are far more competant than Herrera). In football you actually try to SCORE points. This team hasn’t done that. Bring Gannon in to assist Paul Hackett (who is great but clearly needs help). Get over the fact that you and your team suck (I say this with all the love I have for the Raiders and Raider Nation) and take the help from the best QB this team has had since Jim Plunkett. Or maybe you should go see what Marc Wilson is doing these days. I hear Jeff George still wants to play. Maybe Jeff Hostettler can take us to another Super Bowl… oh wait, he never did that for us either. Herrera, you are a TOOL!!!

Gannon rescinds offer to help JaMarcus
Posted by Michael David Smith on January 7, 2010 2:14 PM ET
After former Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon said that he’d love to help current Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell, Raiders senior executive John Herrera smacked the offer down by saying, “It’s Rich that needs the help.”

Today Gannon said on his Sirius radio show that he was surprised by the harsh reaction to a sincere offer of assistance, and that he won’t make such an offer again.

“You know, it’s amazing,” Gannon said, per David White of the San Francisco Chronicle. “You try just to reach out to somebody and say something, that maybe you can help a young guy, and you get criticized for it.”

Gannon said he simply viewed Russell as a quarterback who might benefit from talking to someone who’s been there before, but that he won’t try to interfere if he isn’t wanted.

“I just was really looking at a young guy that’s really struggled and just thought that I could reach out to help him out,” Gannon said. “I was just looking to figure out a way to go out there and share with them some of the things that helped me as a player and prepare and get myself ready not only for the season but for games each week. I’ve done it with Aaron Rodgers and I’ve done it with quarterbacks in Tampa and Minnesota. But, hey, trust me, I won’t make that call again.”

And so the quarterback who completed 67.6 percent of his passes for the Raiders in 2002 will not be offering any advice to the quarterback who completed 48.8 percent of his passes for the Raiders in 2009.

  • CJ Legend 34

I think DHB is going to get the help he needs to have a break out year, next year.

Murphy is going to be a beast for sure next year.

It takes some WRs more time to develop, look at Vernon Davis now. Do you recall how raw and non-explosive this guy was? Now look at him, killing DBs for a big dude.

  • OFL71

Something the Raiders are in short supply of.
STL has far less talent than Oakland but plays with much more effort.
And DHB IS a bust cause he was drafted higher than his potential will take him.
Jesus the guy couldn’t even excel at Maryland in a weak ACC,dropped passes, halfassed it alot,I’m not saying anything that wasn’t already known.

  • new englandraider

hopefully dhb’s mom makes him work his azz off. dude took a beating from us fans. hopefully he murphy and chaz buddy up over the offseason. if his work ethic is as good as they say it is, he should improve a lot. he certainly cant be any worse, can he. maybe its the russell fast ball that he cant catch. ronald curry was a decent wr b4 jruss. dude couldn’t catch anything last year when he played with jr. i know dhb dropped a nice easy pass from grads… just wondering if there might be a comparison. from what i seen out of curry last year, it looked like his rookie season all over again when he just couldn’t catch the ball. jr or not jr. he caught kerrence collins throws ok. and had excellent hands. (remember td in dungver in snow) but could not catch jr period

I am trading and drafting for O linemen, big ones.
    No more cut blocking scheme.
DHB will go to the probowl next year.
I didnt about the skinny calves when I picked DMAC
Russell is Still a great QB.
    Get over it

  • OFL71

DHB MIGHT turn out to be a descent WR but nowhere near what his draft spot dictates.
Murphy is already far better and Schillens is primed to be big time if healthy, but Bey is average at best.
#7 overall for an average receiver….yeah great pick.

  • new englandraider

anyone think we should retain routt?????? dare i say the guy might be a pretty good cb. he kills us in the slot, but every time he played for nnamdi he nutted up. played for cj this past week, looked damn good. Good idea to call John Herrera. (510) 864-5000

Thanks for the number I called and it was awesome.

Rich Gannon is bitter. The fact it after his injury he was shown the door. He rehabbed all year, but wasnt cleared by the raiders, to play the following year, he had to retire. It was not only the raiders not give him
a shot, but no other team was interested in the former mvp. He was old and rightfully finished. Im sure Gannon wanted to hang on, he was the ultimate competitor. Gannon probably blames the raiders for the horrible end to his career. He did play the worst super bowl in history, then the next year he is injured, boom career over. This must have left a terrible after taste in his mouth that he is still sucking on. who knows what happened between Davis and Gannon, once he was informed that his services would not be retained. Knowing how strong willed and bull headed both parties are, it couldnt have been pretty. This smells like gannon having a laugh at the raiders expense. In this way he is able to be a thorn in davis’s side. much the same warren sapp has an axe to grind because davis saw that he was finished. Even Tim brown has fallen victim to this behavior. Disgruntled former athletes, showing a real lack of class.

  • I don’t think DHB will ever live up to the expectation of being the #7 pick, but really that isn’t his fault, he wasn’t a top 10 prospect except in Al’s eyes.

I expect lots of improvement from DHB next year and I think he can be a guy who plays around 10 years or so. He is the perfect size and really fast, blocks well and seems to be a hard-worker. I’m not as down on him as the other two parts of our “triplets”.

Still would have never drafted him.

When Paul Hackett worked in New York (Jets, 2001-2004) and Tampa (2005-2008) they drafted 3 QBs:

    – Brooks Bollinger – 6th round 2003
    – Bruce Gradkowski – 6th round 2006
    – Josh Johnson – 5th round 2008

So those who think we are going to sign QB Chris Simms because he is Hackett guy (I read this in some post) you are wrong. Those 3 are the only 3 QBs drafted when Hackett was a QBs coach at NY and Tampa.

So maybe we will take a small, mobile, and future NFL backup in the later rounds this year too.
