Gannon won’t call again
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, January 7th, 2010 at 12:00 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Rich Gannon’s response to the Raiders’ reaction to his offer for help on the Sirius Blitz on Sirius Satellite Radio:
“You know, it’s amazing. You try just to reach out to somebody and say something, that maybe you can help a young guy, and you get criticized for it. … I’m not looking for work. I have plenty of jobs that keep me busy. … People think I’m looking for a job. I’ve been offered jobs to get into coaching and to get into management. I have no interest in doing it.
“ I just was really looking at a young guy that’s really struggled and just thought that I could reach out to help him out. Listen, I’m not all the king’s horses and I’m not all the king’s men. I can’t put Humpty Dumpty together again. I can’t do that. But I was just looking to figure out a way to go out there and share with them some of the things that helped me as a player and prepare and get myself ready not only for the season but for games each week. I’ve done it with Aaron Rodgers and I’ve done it with quarterbacks in Tampa and Minnesota. But, hey, trust me, I won’t make that call again.”

NFL’s All Time 5 Worst General Managers.
————————–
#4 Al Davis
Wow, a one-time genius is now stuck in the past. When an owner/general manager continues to use the phrase “commitment to excellence” over and over again to describe a team that has a record of 29-83 since 2003, 7 consecutive seasons of 11 loses or more, and 4 coaches in 6 years, you know he’s living in the past. The once proud franchise took a page out of Daniel Snyder’s business handbook on Football management. At one time, this franchise had the greatest winning percentage in all of professional sports, was a perennial playoff team and contender year after year. Somewhere along the way, Al Davis went completely insane, hired and fired coaches over and over again, and displayed a complete lack of understanding not typical of someone in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Known as a ‘maverick’, he’s certainly that as he’s ignored the conventional wisdom of hiring good people and leaving them alone. Instead, he’s known to interfere in play calling, chasing over the hill free agents, and drafting complete duds like Jamarcus Russell whose 3 year quarterback rating is an abysmal 65.2%.

(WASHINGTON) — A government report Thursday on claims for unemployment aid signaled that layoffs are easing and that the economy could be on the verge of posting the first monthly gain in jobs in two years.
The number of people claiming unemployment benefits for the first time barely rose last week, after falling to its lowest level since July 2008 the previous week. And the four-week average of claims fell for the 18th straight week to 450,250. That figure has reached its lowest point since September 2008, when the financial crisis intensified with the collapse of Lehman Brothers.

Jim Harbaugh a “stealth” candidate for Bills, Raiders jobs
Posted by Mike Florio on January 7, 2010 2:58 PM ET
There has been some speculation that the Buffalo Bills (who don’t currently have a head coach) and the Oakland Raiders (who currently do) could be interested in hiring Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh.
A league source tells us that it’s more than speculation; the brother of Ravens coach John Harbaugh is, we’re told, a “stealth” candidate for both jobs.
Secrecy is critical (oops) because Jim Harbaugh currently is in the midst of recruiting season. If Harbaugh acknowledges that he’s a candidate for any job other than the one he has, his recruits will scatter like members of the Cardinal band in the end zone of a game that isn’t yet over.
For any college coach plotting a move, the news needs to come swiftly or not at all, and Harbaugh will have to use the “I’m not going to be the Alabama coach” routine until, you know, he ultimately becomes the Alabama coach.
(Then again, there’s a chance that Jim Harbaugh is already the Baltimore coach.)
In NFL coaching circles, neither the Bills job nor the Raiders job is regarded as incredibly attractive. But the reality is that there are only 32 jobs in NFL head-coaching circles, and Jim Harbaugh simply doesn’t strike us as a guy who is destined to spend his career as a college head coach. With his brother making it to the playoffs twice in his first two seasons with the Ravens, the interest in the Harbaugh who was a pretty good pro quarterback only will increase.

A typical scene in the Raiders HQ:
John Herrera’s assistant: Mr. Herrera, I have a Kenneth Stabler on the line. He says he wants to help the team out of it’s 7 year slump.
JH: Stabler??!? Tell him to F off!! We have Jamarcus Russell. Tell Stabler to win something, then call me back.
Assistant: Mr. Herrera, I have Lester Hayes and Mike Haynes on the line, they would like to offer their assistance with our Defensive Backs.
JH: Are those guys crazy?? We have Stanford Routt!!! Why would we need any help? Tell Lester to n-n-n-n-ever c-c-c-all a-g-g-gain.
Assistant: Mr. Herrera, your doctor called. He said he thinks he has found a way to remove your head from your ass. Should I pass him through?
JH: No!! Tell him everything is fine.
January 7th, 2010 at 12:53 pm

They have that S, but I’m not interested in a S from Texas! No thank you.
January 7th, 2010 at 12:54 pm
The little scroll just came on ESPN and McShay has MT. Cody at #52 and #7 DT. Arenas #53, and #5 DB
Some LB named Kindle for Texas was the #2 LB to McShay.
I think it is going to be a great game, Texas will make it closer than people think.

OT Drew Davis for Alabama is solid.
January 7th, 2010 at 12:58 pm
I like the way the Raiders treat a former MVP, last QB to post winning seasons for the organization, take the team to playoff games, and to a Super Bowl. They tell him to pound sand. I always calculated that the Raiders, as an organization, fell apart the minute Gannon was injured in the Tampa Bay game. The Raiders had a winning record to start that season, and then disintigrated once Gannon was injured and Collins came in. Since the loss of Gannon, the Raiders have sucked. That is how important a QB is to a team!
January 7th, 2010 at 1:01 pm
Thank you VARaider!! Finally somebody that makes sense around here. I always felt the same way. Gannon wasn’t very well-like in the locker room, but even Al has said he doesn’t care about locker room chemistry. Gannon was a leader, though. And he would study his ass off. Jamarcus is neither a leader, nor does he study (except for the menu at Burger King).
January 7th, 2010 at 1:03 pm
What John Herrera and Al both missed was that they just did Rich Gannon a big fat favor. If they wanted to end the story, they would have quietly given him a call back and said, “thanks, we are actively working on the situation, if our plans don’t work out, we’ll take you up on the offer.”
In business this is known as the polite blow-off.
Instead what John and Al did was give Rich what he craves and needs most: PUBLICITY.
I’m traveling on the east coast and the talk show hosts on the FAN here are talking about it. No doubt this will make Rich a more sought after NFL personality.

Vegas, I thought I explained that yesterday.
Cronyism is partiality to long-standing friends, especially by appointing them to positions of authority, regardless of their qualifications. Hence, cronyism is contrary in practice and principle to meritocracy. Cronyism exists when the appointer and the beneficiary are in social contact; often, the appointer is inadequate to hold his or her own job or position of authority, and for this reason the appointer appoints individuals who will not try to weaken him or her, or express views contrary to those of the appointer.
January 7th, 2010 at 1:09 pm
Classic raiders, backing DuhMarcus, congratulations on the past 7 years big Al….the worst 7 years on record in the history of the nfl….oh yea, the lions, yes the lions were ONE game worse than the so called committed to excellence Al Davis and the Oakland Raiders……complete embarassment at every turn, how sad…..

January 7th, 2010 at 1:44 pm
Herrera’s response to gannon’s offer to help the J. Russell is in disaccord with true professionalism as a spoke person of the Raiders. Herrera, he was not contesting the value of staff the Raiders have now. He was soley trying to offer his expertize. Many Raider players and fans express gratitude for his contributions as a Raiders. please, use restrait when addressing a former Raider MVP.These types of incongruities do not seem to heed the Raiders motto commitment to excellents.
January 7th, 2010 at 3:03 pm
Fire Herrera must be 1st & foremost; I just realized who he is.
Follow me now
Mr Al Davis was the Maverick of the NFL, intelligent , wist, and schrewed.
Pride did rise up, but the desire to win was always paramount.
Now he has looked not only old but, fragile, weak, & paranoid as he seems to be withering away;
We have Herrera equating Mr. Rich Gannon with terrorists from 9/11 and other nonsense, telling Al what he wants to hear as the Raider Nation collapses upon itself;
therefore Herrera must be Grima Wormtongue!
January 7th, 2010 at 3:05 pm
Its either that or Herrera is actually raidermick…lol
January 7th, 2010 at 4:58 pm
It’s hard to know what goes on behind the scenes on either side but it is very sad to see a former Raiders player (who played extremely well although for a short time) be ostracized and preventing a QB from getting help. Especially when that QB needs all the help he can get.
January 7th, 2010 at 5:53 pm
Herrera’s and Davis’ arrogance and complete detachment from reality is really sad to see. The good old days are definitely gone.
January 7th, 2010 at 6:15 pm
Wow! This is how we treat our former players…one that helped the Raiders restore its glory. This organization has become a joke…all because of Senile Al and his puppets. What a waste!
