Gannon won’t call again

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, January 7th, 2010 at 12:00 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Rich Gannon’s response to the Raiders’ reaction to his offer for help on the Sirius Blitz on Sirius Satellite Radio:

“You know, it’s amazing. You try just to reach out to somebody and say something, that maybe you can help a young guy, and you get criticized for it. … I’m not looking for work. I have plenty of jobs that keep me busy. … People think I’m looking for a job. I’ve been offered jobs to get into coaching and to get into management. I have no interest in doing it.

“ I just was really looking at a young guy that’s really struggled and just thought that I could reach out to help him out. Listen, I’m not all the king’s horses and I’m not all the king’s men. I can’t put Humpty Dumpty together again. I can’t do that. But I was just looking to figure out a way to go out there and share with them some of the things that helped me as a player and prepare and get myself ready not only for the season but for games each week. I’ve done it with Aaron Rodgers and I’ve done it with quarterbacks in Tampa and Minnesota. But, hey, trust me, I won’t make that call again.”

NFL’s All Time 5 Worst General Managers.
    ————————–
    #4 Al Davis

Wow, a one-time genius is now stuck in the past. When an owner/general manager continues to use the phrase “commitment to excellence” over and over again to describe a team that has a record of 29-83 since 2003, 7 consecutive seasons of 11 loses or more, and 4 coaches in 6 years, you know he’s living in the past. The once proud franchise took a page out of Daniel Snyder’s business handbook on Football management. At one time, this franchise had the greatest winning percentage in all of professional sports, was a perennial playoff team and contender year after year. Somewhere along the way, Al Davis went completely insane, hired and fired coaches over and over again, and displayed a complete lack of understanding not typical of someone in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Known as a ‘maverick’, he’s certainly that as he’s ignored the conventional wisdom of hiring good people and leaving them alone. Instead, he’s known to interfere in play calling, chasing over the hill free agents, and drafting complete duds like Jamarcus Russell whose 3 year quarterback rating is an abysmal 65.2%.

From the link uncoolkell lied about

(WASHINGTON) — A government report Thursday on claims for unemployment aid signaled that layoffs are easing and that the economy could be on the verge of posting the first monthly gain in jobs in two years.

The number of people claiming unemployment benefits for the first time barely rose last week, after falling to its lowest level since July 2008 the previous week. And the four-week average of claims fell for the 18th straight week to 450,250. That figure has reached its lowest point since September 2008, when the financial crisis intensified with the collapse of Lehman Brothers.

Jim Harbaugh a “stealth” candidate for Bills, Raiders jobs
Posted by Mike Florio on January 7, 2010 2:58 PM ET
There has been some speculation that the Buffalo Bills (who don’t currently have a head coach) and the Oakland Raiders (who currently do) could be interested in hiring Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh.

A league source tells us that it’s more than speculation; the brother of Ravens coach John Harbaugh is, we’re told, a “stealth” candidate for both jobs.

Secrecy is critical (oops) because Jim Harbaugh currently is in the midst of recruiting season. If Harbaugh acknowledges that he’s a candidate for any job other than the one he has, his recruits will scatter like members of the Cardinal band in the end zone of a game that isn’t yet over.

For any college coach plotting a move, the news needs to come swiftly or not at all, and Harbaugh will have to use the “I’m not going to be the Alabama coach” routine until, you know, he ultimately becomes the Alabama coach.

(Then again, there’s a chance that Jim Harbaugh is already the Baltimore coach.)

In NFL coaching circles, neither the Bills job nor the Raiders job is regarded as incredibly attractive. But the reality is that there are only 32 jobs in NFL head-coaching circles, and Jim Harbaugh simply doesn’t strike us as a guy who is destined to spend his career as a college head coach. With his brother making it to the playoffs twice in his first two seasons with the Ravens, the interest in the Harbaugh who was a pretty good pro quarterback only will increase.

Jim Harbaugh would be awesome. Captain Comeback.

Just don’t see a hot coaching prospect like him going to Oakland to work with Al Davis and Jamarcus Russell. Call me crazy

  • r8eray

    Thanks r8eray for that!

    Too late RaiderDogg!
