UPDATED: Hurry up and wait . . .
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, January 11th, 2010 at 12:37 pm in Oakland Raiders.
No news out of Alameda as yet, where coach Tom Cable is supposed to meet with Al Davis and presumably be informed his tenure as the 17th coach of the Raiders has ended after winning nine times in 28 games.
Of course, events seldom transpire in a timely manner where the Raiders are concerned.
Raiders senior executive John Herrera said “it’s been a very quiet day” and wasn’t aware of a meeting between Davis and Cable today.
During his season-ending press conference, the day after a 21-13 loss to Baltimore, Cable said he talked to Davis that morning and added “We’ll talk again next week.”
When asked if it would be Monday, Cable said, “Sometime next week.”
Will check in with more information as (or if) it becomes available . . .

It’s official. MLB Rolando McClain declares for draft.
Read the article below….it says alot about his intangibles, intelligence, experience and leadership for being a junior. This guy should be the Raiders pick at #8 or an OT.

A dominant MLB like McClain could do a lot for this team for Many years. Just think back on what Ray Lewis has done for the Raven’s D. Ray by himself is manageable but he brings together the WHOLE defense for a very formidable squad. I think McClain plus a few other key D players could also do the same thing. Use our #8 pick for McClain. Then 2-OT, 3A-C, 3BOG, 4, 5A, 5B & 6 on best available athlete (not fastest necessarily) in the DT, CB, DE, PR/KR categories.

McLain has great instincts, you could see that out there.
I would love him as well, but I think he is going top 5.
I am focusing on the hope that Gerald McCoy is our pick at #8.
Javier Arenas in round 2, and two O-liners in round 3.
Arenas is going to have a Devin Hester/Deon Sanders like impact the next 5 years running kicks.

Does it even matter who we all want to draft? Al is gonna take the fastest CB on the board.
January 11th, 2010 at 12:44 pm
I’m going to laugh, sadly, when/if Al appeases all the “draft O-line” guys, when he finally drafts a T in round 1, and it is the guy Williams from Maryland who runs a 4.7 and is one of the best athletes ever for a LT.
I think we know how that story will end.
January 11th, 2010 at 12:46 pm
Alabama plays 3-4, McClain is a 3-4 ILB, but I guess he could play also 4-3 for us
January 11th, 2010 at 12:47 pm
Come on Al attention whore hurry up.
January 11th, 2010 at 12:50 pm
Our biggest problems are stopping the run and pass/run blocking
Our first rounder should be McClain or OT (With no more options)
Based on what I saw this season I would move Seymour inside and play Shaughnessy outside. Shaughnessy, Seymor, Kelly and Ellis are a decent line. So now focus on LBs.
Morrison is always out of position and Howard is weak.

Vegas,
Aaron did Butte College and Cal proud yesterday.
Point is Tedford went huntin’ in the hinterlands and found a gem. Dick Vermeil went huntin’ in the Arena League and found a steal.
Brett Favre, an afterthought from Southern Miss discarded by Atlanta for a pittance.
Brady, an afterthought in the 7th.
Romo, an undrafted Saluki.
Qbs, who knows what rock a good one is hiding under? Smith? Croyle? Pennington? Thigpen? Losman? Gradkowski? Don’t know if any of ‘em are worth the time, but it seems certain that there is someone out there riding herd on a ranch someplace or selling shoes at a Sportmart who is probably better than any of them.
January 11th, 2010 at 1:00 pm
From Peter King MMQB:
I’ve said it more than once: JaMarcus Russell is the second coming of Ryan Leaf. The lack of desire, the inability to get in top shape (one source close to the Raiders says he reported to camp 35 pounds overweight last summer), and not making football the overriding focus in his life all have contributed to his failure as an NFL player.
Russell is on his way, but I’ve got to hand it to Leaf, who is almost singular in his badness in recent NFL history. Comparing the first three ill-fated seasons of Russell’s Oakland career with the entire three years of Leaf’s run (he played two years in San Diego and one in Dallas):
QB Years W-L Att-Comp Pct Yards TD Int Rating
Russell 2007-09 5-11 354-680 .521 4,083 18 23 65.2
Leaf 1998-00 4-17 317-655 .484 3,666 14 36 50.0

Al’s waiting a few days due to the McGuire story. Al knows nobody cares about the Raiders anymore, so if there’s even a remotely relevant story competing with whatever announcement he has, it’s falling on deaf ears.

Are we missing the point? Davis wants to develop Russell, and win now. You don’t bring in another young unproven guy, to get this done. He will struggle, as he learns on the fly, you might as well send Russell back out there if this is the case. That is why you bring in an older proven nfl veteran, with a limited shelf life. We also have to consider the draft in terms of cost of signing your picks. This is why your new veteran qb, must be inexpensive. Finally, if davis brings in trestman, you need a guy with expeirnce in that sort of passing offense, Vick and Culpepper, fit the bill there. When culpepper was here he was still not over his injured knee. Vick is not an rb playing qb. he is a proven winner at his position, and like most so called mobile guys, the passing game evolves for them as they lose some of the speed and quickness in thier running ability. See Elway, Young, Moon, Cunningham, and Mcnair for reference.People become enamored or mesmerized by the spectacular things the guys do with thier legs, and underestimate, or discount their passing ability. This is an unfair stigma attched to most running qb’s, including vick.Remember the falcons were a running team, and were not built for a high flying passing attack win vick was there.

4eva,
my bad. Southern Illinois, but in fact Romo went to Eastern Illinois.
January 11th, 2010 at 1:07 pm
Well lets take a look if McClain will be there when the Raiders pick then at #8:
1.St. Louis (1-15)- Clausen or Suh
2.Detroit (2-14)- Suh, Okung, or Berry
3.Tampa Bay (3-13)- McCoy or Berry
4.Washington (4-12)- Clausen, Okung, or Bradford
5.Kansas City (4-12)- Berry, Haden, Campbell, McClain or Bryant
6.Seattle (5-11)- Okung, Campbell, Davis, T. Williams or Morgan
7.Cleveland (5-11)- Berry, Haden, Bradford or Bryant
8.Oakland (5-11)- Hopefully McClain or a top OT
9.Buffalo (6-10)
10.Jacksonville^ (
In conclusion, I think only 1 team may take a look at McClain hard before the Raiders at #8 and it’s a dreaded division rival. The Queefs! Ugh…
January 11th, 2010 at 1:08 pm
I was in Chico last friday it didnt look to big there. But i know Chico State is a party school.
January 11th, 2010 at 1:08 pm
Mclain is solid and would fit in any defense. I think there will be a a quality lb available in the second round, and we can spend our first pick on one of our lines.
January 11th, 2010 at 1:09 pm
Vegas,
I know Chico, just a short amble from Paradise.
January 11th, 2010 at 1:10 pm
I hope McLain goes before us, because I would rather have McCoy over Mclain.
Either way, first pick HAS to be for our defensive front 7. Anything else would be just craziness. Even a LT.
January 11th, 2010 at 1:11 pm
I made the seamless transition from Chico State to Las Vegas.
Didn’t miss a step.
January 11th, 2010 at 1:14 pm
Not quite sold on McClain at No. 8. I think he’ll be a good but not great player. If an elite o-lineman is there that’s the pick.
January 11th, 2010 at 1:24 pm
Someone here was anguishing yesterday about “Raiders could’ve had Rodgers but took Fabian instead”. I had to laugh.
Well, the Raiders coulda had Warner, coulda had Favre (when Atlanta dumped him wasn’t ex-Raider Ken Herock the GM in Atlanta?), coulda had Fitzgerald, coulda had Flacco, coulda had Ray Rice, coulda had Beanie Wells, coulda had Ryan Grant…coulda had nearly every single player in the NFL. But the same could be said of nearly every team shooting craps in April.
January 11th, 2010 at 1:25 pm
Chris in NY,
I’ve had this debate many times, but I will propose it to you.
If we were to ultimately replace Henderson at LT, wouldn’t it be easier to do that next year, when his contract is up, and after one more year, we really will have an idea if is he the man for the job or not?
If we draft a LT in the first this year, someone, either Mario or the rookie, will go play a RT, a position they have rarely ever played. The loser of the LT battle will be pissed. What if that is the rookie? And the winner will always be looking over his shoulder.
I look at the situation of the Oakland Raiders drafting a LT, and either moving him or your other young LT to a new position, and handling all that goes with that a recipe for disaster.
Wait one year, and the solution seems so much easier.
January 11th, 2010 at 1:25 pm
Arenas would be a good pick in Round 2 if he’s still available. I like the job CJ is doing opposite Nnamdi — I know many disagree — but we seriously lack depth there and Arenas would be a good Nickel. Plus he’s an option in the return game.
I’m also really high on Idaho G Mike Iupati who is clearly athletic enough to play RT. He’s projected to go late 1st. If a trade down is possible I’d trade down for a late 1st and 2nd, if possible, then with the first 3 picks, get:
1) Mike Iupati, G, Idago
2) Javier Arenas, CB, Alabama
2) Micah Johnson, MLB, Kentucky
3) Best o-line/d-line available
3) Best o-line/d-line available
4) Trindon Holliday, WR/RB/KR, LSU
5) Make an offer on RFA QB Troy Smith, Ravens
5-7) Best available prospects at any position
January 11th, 2010 at 1:28 pm
Oh, don’t worry Jerry.
With the old looney man and his idiot cronies running the show….Cable will be left dwindling until the end of the week. Then if he does get fired, then it will happen next Monday and then the new head coach (probably a lap dog like Fassel) will get hired in 3 weeks!
There is no sense of urgency and direction when it comes to the old looney man Al.

“If the Raiders fire coach Tom Cable, they could strongly consider Packers assistant head coach Winston Moss as a replacement, a source close to the situation said.
Moss, who coaches Green Bay’s inside linebackers, interviewed with Oakland for the head-coaching job last offseason and is on its short list of potential candidates should the job become available.
With the Packers’ season finished following Sunday’s wild-card loss in Arizona, Moss is now free to interview with the team’s permission.”

Some of you want the Raiders to draft an Alabama linebacker, are you the same who wanted Vernon Gholston a couple of years ago?
On Saturday Gholston had one tackle during the Jets playoff win. He could probably be had for a can of spam these days.
Aaron Curry, the freak, whom many of you wanted last year had 54 tackles and 7 assists this season. Half of Kirk Morrison’s worth of stats.

If Bruce Gradkowski walks away, I am going to be crushed. He is everything Jamarcus isn’t, and the perfect thing for this team.
He was 100% commited to the Raiders this year, and from a guy with a one-year deal and not much commitment from the Raiders.
Give him a fair contract and the job, and he won’t let us down. He may get hurt, but Bruce for 3 years playing, leading and directing can be the perfect stepping stone for this organization.
Jamarcus is the complete opposite. He may be the last straw that puts the Raiders out of business.

Since when has Al Davis ever held a meeting with a coach that he really wanted to fire before doing so. None that I can remember. And if true as some of your other clown brothers are claiming that Cable was almost fired 4 times during the season, Al Davis would have dumped him the day after the season. Do you really think that Al Davis is blind to the problems Russell caused for the team?, if you do you are even more of a jerk than I already had you called on.

January 11th, 2010 at 2:57 pm
You cant put Culpepper or leftwich in the same catagory as Russell. Culpepper and Lefftwich have both had success in this league. Culpepper by the way is a pretty good qb that has yet to show what he can do since his knee in miami.Leftwich would not be a good fit, he may be the only qb out there less mobile than Russell. Behind this o-line he would get killed. Culpepper on the other hand can still move, can still throw, and he is in the best shape he has ever been in. He may be a good tutor for Russell. I would also consider Vick, both would be inexpensive, both have played in passing offenses, and both can win games now. only question is who coaches the team next year. If you bring in one of these qbs I think you go with trestman, or green.

Seriously though, the Jets D is looking damn good. Should be a good game and I will be rooting for the Jets. At least Baltimore is a STRONG…READ THAT…STRONG running team.
The Raiders get housed on the ground week after freeking week.
Raider fans are a unique lot. We always love to celebrate and hype up terrible players….then when such superstars (read Terdell Sands, Stuart Schweigart and others) get cut…they suddenly find themselves out of the league.

January 11th, 2010 at 5:16 pm
Excellent statistics Kell.
I agree with you 100% concerning Al Davis’ buffoonery for the last 25 years. Completely and totally unacceptable performance.
With that said, I don’t like Tom Cable’s coaching style. The marginalization of Michael Bush is unforgiveable to me. Bush can be a 1200 yard back and can catch the ball. Yet Cable CLEARLY played favorites with mediocre Justin Fargas. Fargas is a backup running back.
I know what this team is all about in Oakland with Davis calling the shots the way he does. But I am hoping, and that’s all we have, that a competent coach can at least get some of the right players on the field. Namely Michael Bush. He is the key to this team being competitive. We can’t pass…and that likely doesn’t change next year and DMAC/Fargas are plodding running backs.
Feed Bush, throw about 15x a game, and develop a run defense to keep the score manageable. Maybe we can be competitive in more games than not
January 11th, 2010 at 5:18 pm
Davis is not the only pro gilman off shoot. You van include the west coast offense as a shortened version of gilman’s scheme using more slants then vertical routes. Also the passing style spread / run and shoot are also derivatives of gilmans scheme. So for everyone that says Davis’s philosophies are behind the times, in actuality people are still trying to catch up with it….all over this league and in the college ranks.

Anyone see how the Jets and Ravens protected their young QBs….not saying that JaDavis is capable of getting anywhere close to those guys…but perhaps a little more focus on the running game when the passing game is struggling might have been a good idea.
Hence, why Cable’s job should be in jeapordy.
Of course the RAiders need a new GM…but we all know that’s not happening
===============================
You mean focus on the run game behind a line consisting of Morris, Satele, Carlisle and Green? Lot of injuries and scrubs on the field in case you forgot. Factor that in and consider Oakland probably was at the bottom of the pile in offensive plays ran and viola’.
Pretty sure DMC and Farg were injured this year too.
I think you’re right that there needs to be focus on the Raider ground game, but there needs to be some new line men next year.

That should have been the mentality approaching the 2007 NFL Draft. Instead we take Jamarcus, Darren and DHB and Al has some goofy visions of becoming the Dan Fouts Chargers or something.
Set the franchise back years. In a business sense, they need to cut the fat and start over just like the way you see.
Bruce, Bush and some O-line help, with a 1st rounder on our Defensive front 7. I would be real happy with that, even if Cable is still the HC.

This way the players and fans are kept happy and we have some continuity and al gets his play caller all in the same woo wop.

I’m not against a pass-first offense if you have a great QB. No problem when Rich was throwing 40+ passes a game.
I am against Al trying to have Jamarcus and DHB play the role of Dan Fouts and Lance Alworth.
You have to play to your strengths. We have the worst run D. We should have started every game trying to stay close, play the field position and such.
Instead we dropping Jamarcus back in the shadow of his own goal posts throwing INT’s and fumbling. It was horrendous game management.

Has any head coach of the Raiders, whether while as coach or afterward in the past 40 years, ever stated uncategorically that Al Davis game-planned the offensive side of the ball? I don’t recall ever hearing any such thing.
January 11th, 2010 at 5:50 pm
Nnamdi21,
Part of the reason this team was always behind was because of turnovers and multiple 3 and outs….the Raiders needed to take a page out of Kiffin’s handbook and just pound the rock no matter what.
Sure, some games just won’t work out…especially if the defense is getting smashed….the Raiders should have been trying to smash the ball against the Broncos, Texans, Jets, Redskins, Chiefs, Chargers etc…
Listen…WE CAN’T PASS THE BALL. Al Davis hasn’t developed a decent QB in 40 years….it is what it is…like KoolKell is pointing out…this team is at its best when it focuses on the run and minimizes the passing attack.
Even if the O-Line is struggling…gotta keep running it.
Until Al Davis turns over drafting and hires real coaches…the above is the only chance this team has to win!

Winston Moss
Assistant Head Coach/Inside Linebackers
11th NFL Season
Fourth Packers Season
Entering his 22nd season in the National Football League and fourth with the Packers, Winston Moss begins his third year in the role of assistant head coach with inside linebacker responsibilities for the first time in ‘09.
Named to the current post by Head Coach Mike McCarthy on Jan. 15, 2007, Moss impressed McCarthy with his leadership skills when the two worked together for five seasons in New Orleans and again in 2006 in Green Bay. The 43-year-old Moss continues to coach the linebackers as well, his original duty upon joining the Packers. His position responsibility was modified to inside linebackers this year with the switch to a 3-4 defense and the addition of outside linebackers coach Kevin Greene to the staff in 2009.
In 2008, with the addition of free-agent signee Brandon Chillar and the continued development of Desmond Bishop, Moss had his deepest linebacking corps in Green Bay to date, and it was needed when veteran Nick Barnett was lost for the season to a knee injury in Week 10. A.J. Hawk made a rather seamless transition to middle linebacker to fill Barnett’s spot, while Bishop and Chillar both contributed at Hawk’s former weak-side position.
The previous year, Moss helped Barnett continue his progression from steady performer to true team leader with a Pro Bowl-caliber year. Barnett was named second-team All-Pro after leading the Packers in tackles for the fourth time in five seasons and posting a career-high 3 sacks along with two interceptions and numerous big plays late in games.
Meanwhile, Moss continues to develop the talented Hawk, who earned All-Rookie honors in 2006 when he led the team with 155 tackles. He’s also overseen the maturation of Brady Poppinga through his conversion from a college defensive end into a solid strong-side linebacker, a responsibility that now falls to Greene in his new role.
Moss spent six seasons total with the Saints, where he also coached linebackers. Originally hired by the Saints in 2000 as defensive assistant/quality control, he was promoted to linebackers coach near the end of that season to replace John Bunting, who departed to become head coach at the University of North Carolina.
Moss began his coaching career in 1998 as a defensive quality control assistant for the Seattle Seahawks, the club where he played his final NFL season.
A veteran of 11 seasons and 155 NFL games (146 starts), the former linebacker played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1987-90) and the Los Angeles Raiders (1991-94), in addition to the Seahawks (1995-97). Over the course of his career, Moss recorded 768 tackles, 20 sacks and six interceptions, and recovered one fumble for a TD.
In 1993, when he led the Raiders in tackles on a team that advanced to the AFC Divisional playoffs, he earned the Ed Block Courage Award after a vote of his teammates. Moss also was a three-time defensive captain and received the 1996 NFL Players Association Unsung Hero Award while with the Seahawks.
A four-time letterman at the University of Miami (Fla.), he and current Packers scout Alonzo Highsmith helped the Hurricanes to the national championship after the 1983 season under Howard Schnellenberger.
As a prep, Moss attended Miami (Fla.) Southridge High School and was an all-state linebacker.
Born in Miami, Fla., Winston and his wife, Zoila, have three sons, Winston Jr., 15, Robert, 10, and Marcus, 7, and two daughters, Victoria, 14, and Isabella, 1. In his spare time, Moss enjoys spending time with his family and playing golf.

This is something new for Al Davis, the fans are not having it anymore. He’s being openly questioned. They had the lowest attendance in the league this year. Only the home opener sold out, barely. 7 straight blackouts.
AND, look for the Opener to be blackout next year, UNLESS CREDIBLE change is perceived by the fans. Period. I think even he has to acknowledge that.

I completely agree. That is why making cable makes sense on one hand, but in the bigger picture, AL has to do something bigger than that to right this thing.

I’ve always appreciated the fact that Davis was not a Bidwell type, only interested in profit.
It’s just that his time has passed, simple as that.
I don’t have a problem with him as Owner. Just General Manager.
Actually, as Owner he’s been unable to secure a new stadium for decades. Alienated every municipality on the West Coast.
And quite frankly, he never did it all by himself when the Raiders were great. Ron Wolf, John Madden.
