Postseason is on Al standard time
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, January 11th, 2010 at 7:39 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Got an e-mail from a former Raiders employee who was amused when a story gained momentum that Al Davis would fire Tom Cable today.
It was at that moment the former employee assumed it would remain quiet.
“I knew he wouldn’t do it today. He’s not doing it on the media speculation schedule.”
So anyone who waited at the practice facility outside a locked gate hoping for a glimpse of something came away empty. Cable will be the head coach until Davis says otherwise, and he’ll let everyone know when he’s good and ready.
What’s the holdup? Could Cable be spared?
Or is Davis simply gathering all the information he needs to fire Cable for “cause?”
Perhaps he was busy watching Bob Costas interview Mark McGwire.
Keep in mind at Cable’s season-ending press conference, he was non-specific about the day he would talk to Davis, saying it would happen “some time next week.”
Maybe the Raiders will have something to say Tuesday.
Or maybe not.

I’ve always appreciated the fact that Davis was not a Bidwell type, only interested in profit.
It’s just that his time has passed, simple as that.
I don’t have a problem with him as Owner. Just General Manager.
Actually, as Owner he’s been unable to secure a new stadium for decades. Alienated every municipality on the West Coast.
And quite frankly, he never did it all by himself when the Raiders were great. Ron Wolf, John Madden.

76 Raiders NFLs best ever…..

More palace intrigue. You guys are right, if Cable isn’t replaced by a credible and competent coach than it won’t matter. Because the desperate and unemployable are always available…that’s why Davis makes all his decisions after Super Bowl when all the real candidates are long gone.
When will winning matter again? Just winning. Isn’t Davis sick of this? I know I am. Its never about getting better, its always about wacky decision making process and stupid free agent / draft picks…..then another wasted season when something else goes wrong
Just hire a competent coach that will use Michael Bush as the primary running back….that’s all I want

Lombardi said that they had met today. Not like his word is always right, but is usually the case with the Raiders.

Marshall may be wacked on my staff as Moss may want to go a diffrent direction, which is probably going to be the case if we hire a new HC…..

Sad that Martz is on a league blacklist.

How can thesee guys look themselves in the mirror knowing that they have led this team to ruin. Mr. Davis gets the bulk of the blame, but man if i did the job thse guys did, i would have been fired 10 years ago…..

I just hope that if he DOES indeed go with a GM, he doesn’t cast his lot with Vinny Cerrato. That guy left a blight on the Redskins organization almost as bad as ours!

I love it, the way you all twist in the wind and EVERYTHING that you people report with regards to what and when the Raiders will do something turns out to be NOTHING BUT BULL.
And let me guess who that X emplyee was?, wow it is a tough one but I will try lol, is it the hog jowlled dude they have sitting in on NFL Network named Mike?
The dude that was so hard up to collect a check that he was forced to spend his days walking around a parking lot or quite and loose the payday and he walked the lot? The dude that offered to WORK FOR NOTHING with Denver only to BE LET GO lol?, I thought so.
When will you people learn that Al Davis plays all you fools just like the clowns you all are.

snny must a scorned ex raiders employee
January 11th, 2010 at 8:34 pm
Is anyone surprised by this? Raider fans should know the drill by now, Davis never does things when people think he will, he probably didn’t do it just because it was reported that he will. Classic Al.

if cable is fired “for cause” by big al, how much more drastically is that going to reduce the pool from possible candidates? i mean, if big al’s firing guys and trying to get out of paying them for this and that reason, (incredibly petty and almost seemingly fabricated reasons) that’s got to be a turn off for any half decent coach out there looking for a job. even if big al had good reason to get rid of this guy, that’s now two in a row. if for nothing else, it looks cheap, cheesy and down right bad. dear god, jim fassel, come on down…

Watching Jim H on the sideline with his Dad,can you get so pumped just watching your brothers team play? he looked to me like a guy, that wanted to get straight to work on his new players
January 12th, 2010 at 6:16 am
How sad that with all the problems facing the Raiders, Big Al is concerned with throwing off the media’s timetable for his coaching decision.
Like I always say, one of the biggest myths in the world of sports is that Al Davis wants to win. The truth, obviously, is that he would rather do things his way and lose than change and possibly win.

I think snnyjcbs is Herrera. That sounds like a Raiders press release.
January 12th, 2010 at 12:14 pm
With the McGwire thing breaking you have to think Al will wait till next week. Who cares what stooge is next in line for the Raiders job when there’s real news to report?
January 12th, 2010 at 1:47 pm
Al Davis JUST DIE BABY!!! He is gonna fire Cable, keep JR & give him the money, hire Fassel (last puppet left) and keep the entire offensive staff simply because they are under contract. The looniness will continue when he keeps Walker and doesn’t let him on the field for a second year. I smell 4-12 in 2010.
