Movement on Cable front

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, January 14th, 2010 at 1:05 pm in Oakland Raiders.

At last.

Raiders coach Tom Cable is scheduled to meet with owner Al Davis today, a team source confirms.

“They expect to meet today and possibly tomorrow,” Raiders senior executive John Herrera said.

The possibility of a second day of talks leaves open the possibility that depending on how the talks go, Cable could be retained. Otherwise, why wouldn’t Davis simply fire Cable and be done with it?

Coaching was not to blame for that 5-11 debacle. Give Tom one more year to try to improve. He’s earned it.

    LOL- Richochet
I’m not sure if your insults are for real or if your just teasing guys on here.
    Either way it’s HILARIOUS.
I’d like to think you’re just joking and everyone is having fun with you.
But when I read some responses I think you really hurt feelings.

Either they don’t get it. Or it’s me that fail to realize your sincerity.

I scroll for comments from richochet. Spellcheck. Just started norco bob.

You guys make me laugh big time.
    ===================================
I try to explain..every board needs a voice of reason.
Someone to point the misguided fools in a somewhat feasible direction that leads them out of their own personal abyss..some needing a swift kick in the ass to start them on their journey.

    Bring me your slow..your weak..your pathetic…your lemmings..and I shall set them free.
Some just take longer than others.

    It is my way.

  9. Plunketthead Says:

    Rico my friend

    I plead guilty as charged.
    Yes I am a homer.
Yes I swing on Al’s balls.
When some mansexer starts talking about some fruitloop team named Viqueens or Squaws of pissants or whatever, I brag about the Oakland Raiders and threaten them with a buttwhupping next year.

What else am I suppose to do? Roll over like a beta dog and expose my belly? Lie and say I dont like the Raiders anymore?

I just brag about the size Al’s trophy case and threaten them with next year

  10. Ryan Says:

Maybe he is firing him today and hiring him as a line coach tomorrow.

Personally, I would like to see him for one more year, but I wanted Callahan as the Raiders coach after Gruden left so what do I know. (I also liked the Kiffin hire, so I’m way off.)

  11. Richochet Says:

Well Plunk, at some point it becomes a situation of crying wolf, no?

“Wait tell next year” is preferable to yearning for a belly rub..I suppose, lol..although not as much fun.

  12. Plunketthead Says:

And since I cant change Al or anything about him or his team I use the senerity prayer on him.
The Serenity Prayer teaches me to accept Al, his football team and everyone on it as it is.

ESPN reporting that Cable-Davis meeting was/is today with a possible 2nd meeting tomorrow.

Just a gut feeling, but I think Davis might not be sure what he wants to do and will give the Cable Guy a chance to plead his case. Actually think Cable might stay at this point but it’s really anybody’s guess.

  14. Dakota Says:

    Kiss 2010 goodbye.

  15. Plunketthead Says:

It would be like crying wolf except everyone knows I am full of it and the Raiders are a laughing stock so I am just another crazy old fool who wears Raider gear and exercices his second amendment rights.

  16. Chris in NY Says:

I get the impression Al likes Cable well enough. If Al is as sour on JaMarcus as everyone else is at this point it give Cable a boost. The players are all supporting him. They did much better with JaMarcus on the bench. Cable still has one year left on his contract and there’s talk of a possible lockout in 2011 (although I find it hard to believe the owners are that stupid to derail the game at it’s all-time peak in popularity).

I’m somewhat undecided on Cable myself. I think there are some candidates I’d prefer (Fassel, Gruden, Harbaugh) some that I’d definitely prefer Cable to and many I don’t know enough about.

It might all come down to Cable explaining the poor play of the o-line and explaining how he’s going to fix it.

  17. The Big Banana Says:

Today’s meeting is to discuss Cable’s plans for the team and Russell. Tomorrow’s meeting is to discuss whether those plans are acceptable to Al and, as a result, whether or not Cable stays.

  18. Seymour Bush Says:

Somehow, I get the feeling that Bill Cowher is not coming here with Jimmy Johnson in tow as his offensive coordinator. Who is a better choice for HC right now? Especially considering if you bring in another retread, he will try to get his own players in here and it will be another 2-3 year rebuilding project, or bringing in a college guy that will take 2-3 years to learn the league?

  19. EndZoner Says:

  21. The Big Banana Says:

I agree with your assessment, Chris. All depends what Al thinks of Russell.

  22. Simon Says:

“Raiders senior executive John Herrera” what a joke…this guy should be fired before Cable.

  23. The Kraken Says:

Sure are alot of FORTUNE TELLERS here!!

  24. Richochet Says:

Interesting on how many would be happy with Mooch.

Mooch was known for never disciplining players. The knock was ‘Mooch made losing comfortable”.

He was more interested in how GQ he looked for the post game interview, than he did in winning.

And his offenses? geez…makes “blase” look interesting.

For that matter, in ‘02? When the Niners had the biggest playoff comeback ever? Against the Giants? Was Jeff Garcia, and T.O. telling Mooch at halftime they’re not following the plays called, and were going to call their own plays..which Garcia did.

Mooch is the same guy who told Bill Walsh he wasn’t interested in any advice from him regarding running the team..which added to the list of why Mooch was fired.

Mooch then completely sucked in Detroit..and completely sucked in Cleveland..

That said..just can’t imagine the attention whore taking over the least desirable job in sports…he’s already got the attention he so craves.

He might miss coaching…but you know that he knows full well that he wouldn’t be in charge in Oakland.

    —————————–
Sideline to sideline? That’s only 53 1/3 yds, mental midget.

    That’s an average throw.
    ==========================================

that’s an average throw? What’s a deep ball? 95 yards? when was the last time you saw someone throwing the ball 70 yards in the air over and over? And this guy calls others mental midgets?
    ===============================
    Are you serious? lol..you dumbass.
I can easily throw a football 40 yds.
You acting all impressed about a 50 yd throw tells me you’ve never played the game.
Who the hell is talking about throwing 70 yds over and over? I’m saying 50 yd throw every qb in the league can make, except for those labeled as a weak arm.

    Now shut up, fool.

  27. raidermot Says:

Cable walks into Al’s office and tells him.

Mr Davis, you have to keep me as the head coach. You have no choice. I am the best chance JaMarBust has to being a legitimate starting QB in this NFL. You bring in a new coach, J-Russ is back at Square 1. Right now we got him at Square 2, maybe 3.

Who you going to bring in? There is not a line of men out there dying to coach the Raiders. Let me look JaMarBust in the eye and tell him, “Kid, I benched you before, I can make you ride the pine again. You want to play QB? Then you have to work at it and earn it.”

Al Davis, you need me more than I need you. You want to fire my ass, go ahead. Then what are you going to? Unload that coach killer JaEmbarrass on the next shlup to take this job? All anybody will talk about is biggest bust since Ryan Leaf and Al Davis drafted him. Save my ass and give your legacy a chance. Fire me and you go down in flames.

Hold on. Let me take this call. Kiffin is asking about my availability to go to USC, what should I tell him?

Let me know what you like. If you need me, you got my number. Se you later AL – - -igator.

Oddly..dust building up on the boxes are never a problem.

    Go figure.

  30. raidertay Says:

On one side I like to see Cable come back because it looks like this team is starting to make progress and I am tired of the coaching carousel. Besides the players listen to him. But on the other hand 5-11 is still 5-11. There are a lot of 1st year coaches having success: Balt, ATL, Den.

Then you factor in the wife beating/ Hanson drama BS. Is Al condoning domestic violence keeping Cable.

Its not an easy decision at all. I can see why the old man is wafflin.

  31. jhill Says:

    Want Mooch????

Hell, I WANT Cowher or Gruden.

More like will SETTLE for Harbaugh, Mooch, Fassell, Billick.

  32. jhill Says:

Let’s not get caught up here folks!

The team did NOT improve later in the season, it got HEALTHY for a few games. JLH, Chaz, Gallery, and McFadden were all hurt early in the year. Once THEY came back, the team played SLIGHTLY better.

    And STILL lost!

  33. spellcheck Says:

ZOWZA!!!!….according to a few of you Einsteins …The Raiders are just a GM away from the Playoffs and a Superbowl in 2010….Boy Al Davis sure is a stubborn old coot…how can he not see that??? he should start playing Madden video games to catch up on all of you geniuses vast football knowledge.

  34. DKnight007 Says:

Thanks Coach Brown for all the hard work and dedication as a player and coach.

It’s good to retire…hang it up and relax….enjoy the rest of your life instead of dealing with the non sense day in and day out. Play golf…travel…see the world.

Good move by Mr Willie Brown….just like it was a good move by Freddie B.

  35. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Al’s waiting till next week. He needs the center stage, and he’s not getting it now with games happening in less than two days. Nobody cares about the Raiders anymore and in order for Al to be the big story, there has to be NOTHING else going on.

  36. DKnight007 Says:

Gruden, Harbaugh, Garrett, or Mariuchi should be the next Raiders Head Coach hopefully. These guys are WINNERS who will sell tickets and put butts in the seats and who will get good coaches to assist them.

The mediocre likes of Gilbride, Fassell, Cable, Trestman and the reaches like Leach will NOT sell tickets and they will not win games consistently here!

  37. raidertay Says:

    Jhill,

Would you atleast that the team look solid under Gradowski? The guy did beat the Bengals and the Steelers.

I drink the raider koolaide and always will.

I believe Davis will lead us to success. Even tho it seems like he’s not.
It’s hard to back Davis with what’s been going on the past how many years.

I use to hate Al Davis. Until I would be over at his piedmont manor (work related)
From 2001-2008 I’d be there once a month. Only Met/saw with him about 10 times total.
I never mentioned football. But it’s hard to tell someOne how to do their job when he been in the football biz all his life. His mind was still sharp. Don’t let his physical appearance fool you. His philosophy might be outdated tho

  40. spellcheck Says:

If the Raiders soldify the run defense thru FA and the draft and get some consistant QB play and the WR’s start hanging on to the ball, Cable should be able to put together a winning record….don’t worry …I’ll be here to ram it down your throats when you jump back on the bandwagon.

  41. Plunketthead Says:

Mooch and Sapp just spent a year mocking Al, the Raiders, Jr, DHB, etc on NFL NEtwork.

Mooch is washed up and the players would know it.

  42. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

DKnight, Al couldn’t even get an up and coming college assistant like Kiffin anymore. Even that window closed. The only people who will come here now are straight up nobodies who just want back into the NFL, like Fassell. And, whoever it is, they’ll take orders. They’ll have no more power than Cable did. All we can do is hope they find the balls to stand up to Al and just run the team. Basically, we’re going to suck until Al dies. The Kiffin firing, the overhead projector press conference, sealed that fate. There’s really no chance of the Raiders ever being good again until Al’s dead.

this statement is the dumbest thing I have ever read and last night I was helping five year olds do their homework. You can easily throw the ball 40 yards, well, I played the game and I can throw it farther than that. So, you are wrong on points A&B. You state 50+ yards is an average throw. That’s ridiculous. Most QB’s in the NFL can throw the ball 60-65 yards. Some more than that, some less. The only thing that richochet’s is your credibility. You have none. Turd.

with all due respects MistaBrOwn I have seen about half a dozen people call you names in here, and that’s been in just the last two days. And you are calling other people embarrasments? You might want to look in the mirror pal, that’s where the real joke is.

  94. Raider E Says:

Ain’t no woman in the world like my Beeech.

  95. KoolKell Says:

Then there’s Brownstains, he’s gotta be the unhappiest person in the world!

These losers have no interest in the Raiders or football in general. Just releasing their frustrations with life. Patheric.

THANKS FOR PROVING MY POINT..lol..you idiot.

What you mean to say is “Under my other handle, Richochet slapped me around like a ping pong ball..so immediately upon signing in under this new silly name, I rush to act like a big boy and call him out. Mr. B also slapped me around like I was a defenseless redheaded ugly kid, so now I feel braver calling him out as well”

the only thing left out is you stating “IT’S OK, WHEN I FEEL LIKE A COMPLETE FLUSTERED LOSER..LIKE BEFORE..I’LL JUST CREATE ANOTHER HANDLE, AND START OVER”

    Yeah, we know, lol…big time.

    Dakota,

Where did you hear Gruden was on a plane from Chicago to Oakland yesterday?

  98. rumbero Says:

The Raiders under Al Davis will never be competitive again. Al Davis has sunk the Raiders so low, that only major change will make an impact. Al CANNOT conitnue to be the pro scout, college scout, handle the draft, while being the GM and owner and drafting poorly.

    Its 2010.

    Wake up

Thats exactly what you did on #8. and 9.

Your life means nothing. No matter how hard you thump your chest and try to convince people to see the world as sh*ttily as you, you won’t succeed, because we can simply ignore….you…
