Still on Al standard time
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, January 15th, 2010 at 5:31 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Word out of Alameda is that Tom Cable has been at work most of the day but Al Davis has not.
It’s been confirmed the two did meet last night, although estimates of the time they spent together ranged from one to three hours.
Davis could still arrive for a late-night meeting, or it could be put off until the owner feels its time to move ahead. It’s entire possible Davis knows exactly what he’s going to do and Cable knows as well but he hasn’t felt the need to tell anyone.
In theory, if Cable is staying, there’s no reason to announce anything until a press release is produced or a spokesman says, “He’s under contract and we never considered firing him. It’s all media speculation,” as they did following Lane Kiffin’s failed attempt to fire Rob Ryan.
It’s Al’s world, and we’re along for the long, slow ride.

BAM! First?
January 15th, 2010 at 5:37 pm
Jerry, we are not on Al’s time. Al’s on the media’s time. Al knows that with Haiti, Gilbert Arenas, and Kiffin dominating the news, his huge announcement of replacing Cable with another puppet will be lucky to get 3 seconds at the tail end of sportscenter. He’s waiting till there’s no other big sports related stories, because he knows that’s the only way he’s going to get the main stage. Al is only mysterious to those who buy into his b.s.
January 15th, 2010 at 5:38 pm
I would say we have a coach. Tom Cable. But, I know Al will prove me wrong tonight at ten.
January 15th, 2010 at 5:39 pm
Second!
January 15th, 2010 at 5:43 pm
Yeh, we have a coach, Ghost, who took a 5-11 team to 5-11, and brought more chaos and negative attention than Kiffin could drunk.
January 15th, 2010 at 5:46 pm
If he plans to keep Cable, I hope there is never an announcement and just keeps the media guessing for a few more days. Funny to see the media scramble around for an answer. All this hype around the status of a coach is a creation of the media anyways.
Just too damn long before the next season starts.
January 15th, 2010 at 5:49 pm
Room for Improvement. Just like your post.
January 15th, 2010 at 5:50 pm
Might, who is scrambling for an answer, other than the local media who covers the Raiders, which is their job? Even they really don’t give a s’t. Jerry isn’t scrambling. Just giving a little update once a day, which is, again, his job. Is a cook at McDonald’s scrambling to cook fries just for you, because you’re the king, or is it his job? Because the level of urgency from the local press regarding Davis is about the same. They don’t even really care. The national media? Forget it. The Raiders do not even exist right now, with Haiti (a lot of athletes from there), Arenas in federal court, your guys’ buddy Lane, etc. The national media being booked right now, too booked for any stupid Raider story short of Davis himself kicking the bucket, is the reason Al’s putting this off till next week. We are not on Davis’s time. Davis is on the national media’s time.
January 15th, 2010 at 5:50 pm
Who cares about Cable. The Raiders season is over. None of this is not going to change the 5-11 season. I’ll check back in April 4 the draft.
January 15th, 2010 at 5:52 pm
Sorry, Ghost, it’s just that you said we have a “coach”. We have no such thing. USC has a coach, though. LOL.
January 15th, 2010 at 5:55 pm
LOL, great title Jerry…
January 15th, 2010 at 5:59 pm
Even if it’s not true. We are not on Al standard time. Al is on the national media’s time. Al’s on BSPN time, LOL. They’ll let him know when they have time for a Raiders’ story. If Al Davis fired Cable today, and held a press conference, the only station that would carry it live is that comcast station, that’s it. In other words, nobody would get to hear Al’s big state of the Raiders union speech. And that’s why he’s waiting.
January 15th, 2010 at 6:01 pm
The truth is, there will always be a better story than the Raiders’ head coaching position. Al will wind up keeping Cable, they’ll go 9-7, sneak into the playoffs and win the Super Bowl next year.

January 15th, 2010 at 6:11 pm
Some people are bagging on Kiffin for going from Tennessee to USC. The USC job is a no brainer. Anybody would have done that. Kiffin went with a better job without much thought because that was the smart thing to do.
January 15th, 2010 at 6:12 pm
Sounds like we’ll have another 5-11 year next year. Oh Boy. We had three top ten picks in the last three years to improve our offense. All three suck!!!
January 15th, 2010 at 6:16 pm
Bring back Bruce!!
January 15th, 2010 at 6:19 pm
Maybe MR is right. Al Davis gets a kick out of people wondering: what the hell he will do next? He knows this and he just lurks in his own world and opens his mouth when he gets ready. He lives off us trying to figure out his next move. Like in the summer, who the hell saw the Seymour trade coming? Not a single one of us including the media.

How many hours do other team’s GMs put in?

January 15th, 2010 at 7:23 pm
Just got back, lot of catch-up to do.
Can’t help this one:
———————————–
The backup QB (Russell) is the one I thought would be a superstar by now,” Ryan said. “He had that 77 rating his rookie year. I’m a little surprised he hasn’t become the superstar. I’m kind of hoping he doesn’t get in the game. That kid can throw it through a storm. I think the young man’s a good kid.”
————————————–
Butt licking. Plain and simple. A flat out “yes Mr. Davis, I’ll polish your balls”.
January 15th, 2010 at 7:28 pm
I would prefer that we stay quite and develop a chip on our shoulder. There will be enough news coming out of LA to sink a battle ship. The Media whore is in Media Heaven.
January 15th, 2010 at 7:37 pm
Do you think Tom Cable is in demand for any position around the league? I mean in demand..a must have coach…even as an O-Line coach?
You all know the answer to that question and therin lies the problem.
Raiders and its fans put a lot of hope into marginal at best talent. Whether its players or coaches…
1. Tom Cable can be a great coach? ~ Really?
2. Fargas, Eugene, Morrison, Kelly, Warren have excellent trade value on the open market? ~ No way!
3. Gradkowski can be a savior? ~ spare me
4. Huff, JaDavis, DMAC & DHB will develop into the top 10% of the league at their position groups? How about top 75%….ridiculous
5. Gallery is a pro-bowl guard!
6. Fargas runs so hard
7. Kelly and Warren are stout enough on the D-Line.
Folks…this team is garbage. The coaches are bad, the players are bad and the GM is clueless.
3-13 to 5-11 is on the horizon unless SOMETHING changes
January 15th, 2010 at 7:38 pm
Hey Vegas, if you still out there I just got a text from my guy who is Kareem Jackson’s family member. Said Kareem is declaring. Now we will see what the scouts think of both Bama CBs. Don’t get me wrong, I like em both but I got this feeling Jackson gets drafted first.
Arenas is a zone corner who is 5′9” 192, is an excellent PR.
Jackson is a man to man cover guy who is 5′11” 198.
Both guys are about the same speed.
We’ll see come April.

504,
Looks like whichever goes first, they will both be taken fairly close to each other. I like the play-making ability of Arenas, Jackson may be the more solid player, but…..as they say, we shall see.

None of that was necessarily Wade Phillips. Wade lets Jerry be Jerry, so he just had to win a little more in order to be able to hang around longer. The Cowboys have developed their talent … period. Cable lets Al be Al, so I think he’ll be given a little more leeway. As for our talent, we’ve got some undervalued hard workers and some overpriced bums. It’s bad when your two Pro Bowlers are your punter and a CB that no one ever throws against. DHB? OMG!
January 15th, 2010 at 7:51 pm
yes but, they stuck with the guy even when all of the fans were screaming for his job. I know a few Cowboy fans that were ready to run Wade and Tony out of town. I would prefer to have there problem. And if I’m not mistaken Tony Romo is about the equivalent of Kurt Warner. Lucky to be discovered. Because they were both undrafted.

=======================================================
Wade Phillips worked his way up the ranks and has been an NFL head coach on several occassions. He is a well-respected defensive mind as well. Had he been fired last year, someone would have signed immediately as a defensive coordintor.
Tom Cable has done nothing. He might just be out of the league right now given his baggage. I am amazed that people think this 5-11 team is somehow on the cusp of greatness.
5-11!!!!! That is a HORRIBLE RECORD. Plus this guy can’t get the team ready to play each week. Following up wins with massive blowouts…couldn’t even win 2 in a row. The team got worse over the last offseason WITH HIM in charge.
CAble is what he is…a decent O-Line coach when he is focused on that 100%
Get Harbaugh in here. Or Jim Fassell…at least Fassel has NFL Head Coach experience and has had success
January 15th, 2010 at 7:54 pm
Tony Romo wasn’t cut three times by QB needy teams.
I trust their scouting better than the scouting here in Oakland.

Jerry Jones also humbled himself enough to allow Parcells to come in and right the ship. All those players are Parcells guys for the most part as well as the structure.
as for Wade Phillips…even he is a type of coach that is out of range for Oakland.
January 15th, 2010 at 7:57 pm
Think Davis will humble himself for a minute and let someone at least get us back to just being a bad team?

Romo may have had his problems, but he has always toed the line politically (even when T.O. was there). He didn’t show up 40 pounds overweight and out of shape, and he didn’t walk around with a toboggan and tights on in 90 degree weather. And he has a nice touch on his throws, too.
January 15th, 2010 at 8:12 pm
I’m not even sure Al would humble himself to the ghost of Papa Bear Halas!
January 15th, 2010 at 8:18 pm
Russell’s overweight because he eats out every night. He grew up poor and now has a pocket full of cash and VIP status at the best restaurants in the bay area. What else is there to do when you play for a hopeless NFL team? Russell could show up in perfect shape, and the Raiders are still 5-11. The Raiders have been finding ways to lose, really, sans the Gruden era, for nearly 20 years now, and Russell has nothing to do with it.
January 15th, 2010 at 8:21 pm
I beg to differ. Russell is the face of the franchise and the leader of the offense, not to mention the fact that Al sank a bunch of money and belief in him — and he’s a pathetic loser. He has made everyone in the organization look like a bunch of fools … and your think that carries no weight? Okay fine, you Herrera wannabe!

I was responding to a partial comparison of Romo to Gradkowski. Romo was cultivated and developed by a good coach in Bill Parcells.
Gradkowski was cut by three teams in something like 3 years. I just want to know why those qb needy teams dispatched him so quickly…
Gradkowski might prove me wrong…but I have a feeling that his shortcomings will get exposed in a 16 game season.
The truth is that the Raiders do not have a viable QB. Gradkowski is a fringe player that strung together a 2 good outings. He has earned the right to compete in an open competition.
JaDavis is no QB at all. End of discussion
Frye is a coach but not a player and Losman is an unknown.
How about trading that #8 overall for Donavan McNabb and signing him to a 3 year contract. He would give us our 1st good QB in 7 years. Plus Al Davis will just throw the pick away on some kid that won’t develop for 5 years.

I agree with you — Gradkowski played hard, but he is not the solution (and besides, he seems kind of fragile). McNabb ain’t going anywhere. The number or number 3 pick is actually more valuable in Raiderland than the #1 pick ever will be.
When’s the last decent player we got with a 1st round pick. And then pay all that money and celebrate said player’s ascension to mediocrity (see Huff)
I’ve seen enough. Al Davis has no clue what he is doing. Therfore, the best option is to trade these high picks for proven players.
Seymour, at age 30, is the 2nd best #1 draft pick this team has made in a decade and Nnamdi just happen to have a tremendous work ethic and thirst for knowledge. I am quite confident to believe that Davis did not evaluate Nnamdi’s work ethic…he drafted a safety to play corner and he found an acorn!

When the Bills began this process, they made it clear they’re going through a long process that won’t be short-cutted unless Cowher would have said yes early. Look for this to take between a week and a month to get resolved. If they’re the only job open (other than Oakland, which almost doesn’t count because the pool of candidates is so different), why rush? But I do know they like Frazier a lot.

If I am the Raiders I am hoping a McNabb or Hasselback gets released.
The Raiders are incapable of developing a QB…therfore, they have to get someone elses leftovers…like rummaging through a yard sale, or flea market, or garbage can….looking for something to keep going.
The Raiders have to take a veteran and hope….I am on the phone with Philly in the AM offering that 1st round pick that if kept will turn into yet another BUST

Nice assessment.
Losman is only an unknown as far as the Raiders are concerned though. They’ll find out more by the end of next pre-season.
I’d like to see them bring in Charlie Whitehurst from SD next year. And perhaps Drew Willy if the Colts can’t make room for him on their roster.
I’m a fan of Charlie Frye, but he has a limited upside. He’s still too young to start coaching, but he will never be starter material. If they bring in another QB, then Frye will be the first one gone…
January 15th, 2010 at 9:00 pm
SnB,
A first rounder for McNabb?
I’ve always liked the guy, but that’s too steep a price. No team will give up a first rounder for him. A 2nd at best.
More likely scenario is that they just cut him.
I think Hasslebeck gets one more year to produce before he’s on the hot seat. Especially with a new coach coming in there.
January 15th, 2010 at 9:06 pm
Remember. McNabb saught out Russell before the PHI/OAK game this year. Russell redoes his contract & we get a legit QB. That’s scary. Know most have given up on Russell, but look at what Young has done for Ten. If he can truly see how the QB position is played, than just maybe. Just maybe. He can be our future. (I don’t see it myself)
January 15th, 2010 at 9:08 pm
The Eagles would be foolish to get rid of McNabb. Finding a good QB is very difficult…as the Raiders unfortunately know real well. If you get to the playoffs…then that a success…what the Eagles have to do is build the team up on the defense and o-line. Also run the ball.
Carolina would jump on McNabb in a minute and they would be a playoff team.
I am so sick of having no QB play. For most of my years watching the Raiders…they have mostly had plodding and ineffective QBs.
I’ll take McNabb in a minute. He instantly would become the top 3 or 4 QBs in Raider history. Plus he knows the West Coast offense.
As for the 1st rounder…why not…the Raiders have to stop taking players that high..it eats up cap space and these guys bust out. The 3rd round pick is more valuable than the 1st around heree
January 15th, 2010 at 9:11 pm
Who thinks that McNabb is worth a 2 & a future 3?
January 15th, 2010 at 9:17 pm
Only Raider fans will take a conversation between two players and think it’s some kind of deal in the works. McNabb was just hollering at him.
January 15th, 2010 at 9:20 pm
Davis has always been a fan of bringing in old cast off QB’s a giving them a second or third chance. So I wouldn’t put it passed him if he were to pick up McNabb. He’s only tried drafting QB a few times. And after Russell, I wouldn’t expect him to try again any time soon.
Would McNabb be worth a 2nd rounder? Sure.
January 15th, 2010 at 9:20 pm
The Eagles have gone as far as they can with McNabb. The future is Kolb in PHI. Why not get something out of McNabb while they can. They just lost their GM too.

I know McNabb is far better than anything we’ve had in a while, but I also think he’s kind of a tool. Not sure why. Guy just rubs me the wrong way. Might be because he thinks he’s hilarious but he’s really kind of a goofy dork. Plus he’s approaching the downslope of his career. Obviously he could pay big dividends and lead us back to respectability right away, but something about that move bothers me.

I dont understand why the media is staking out HQ, thinking theres going to be some firing,..its really stupid,…does local media in every NFL city do this after every year?…clearly the Raiders go through coaches, but why the media stakes out the place, waiting around for whatever,..theres not going to be any firings, nor should there be,…if the team fires the coach, fine, then the media should get down there to cover it,..but staking out Raiders HQ waiting around,..totally silly,..if I was a media person and the boss told me to sit in a truck every day in that parking lot, F that, wouldnt do it…there isnt going to be any firing, never was going to be,…the media fell into a trap, and now look retarded,..especially comcast sports.
January 15th, 2010 at 10:49 pm
Speaking of 75, did any of you guys see the 50th Birthday Raiders Cake they gave Howie Long on the FOX Set last week?
January 15th, 2010 at 11:11 pm
Time has proven that Jerry Jones > Al Davis in every way.
He’s turned a national icon (cowboys) into a financial juggernaut, a space-aged stadium that does get filled out with high-prices for ticketing and food/beverages, has won a couple Superbowls, and his organization is far more stable and run with accountability than his good friend’s team, the Raiders….who Al has turned a national icon (raiders) into a financial basket-case, at the very bottom of not only NFL but all US pro-sport teams, stadium in decay, can’t even sell out his games, has engineered only one Lamar Hunt Trophy and otherwise 10+ losing seasons for practically a whole decade now, with no accountability in the organization but just a soap-opera circus.
Raiders like a class clown sent to the corner of the room with a dunce hat on.
Thank-you, Mr Davis (grrr).
January 15th, 2010 at 11:16 pm
GG,..seems to me its you who is wearing the dunce cap.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:16 pm
Yeah, but Al got Todd Cristensen from the Cowboys…That should make them even…
Right?
January 15th, 2010 at 11:18 pm
All of those things you say about the team, yet you cant stop loving, cant stay away, cant look away, you feel abused but wont file for divorce,…no matter how bad this team is, in your eyes, you will never leave,..whos the dunce?…I dont see things as you do, I see promise and hope,..all a matter of perspective bud,…and yours is dreary, not mine. 2010 will be awesome!
January 15th, 2010 at 11:19 pm
Norco….
Me? I think the only person wearing a dunce cap is Al. He’s the one who is suffering the most from his own management—-his organization is in ruins financially, etc.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:22 pm
If you owned a soft drink company, Norco, eg, Pepsi, and you turned that iconic financial juggernaut into bankruptcy, thru poor management and abuse, who is the joke on? Pepsi drinkers? Or the Pepsi owner? How would the joke be on Pepsi drinkers? You’d be the idiot businessman who took an empire to the toilet.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:25 pm
Who told you Al is suffering financially GG?…his accountant?…lawyers?…oh, was it some people in this blog?…lol.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:27 pm
In fact, Mark Davis will probably turn out to be a far more savvy businessman than Al. As an owner, he’ll cede football operations to a new structure and hire GMs, scouts, etc, delegate a lot of other administration facets to hired hands, accountability will ensue, and from that on-field success, and then ultimately the money will start rolling in big time again, manage to drum up a new space-aged stadium etc, etc.
Whereas Al is purely focused on his own personal image, the power-trip of doing things his way only irrespective of financial and football failure, etc.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:33 pm
You’re missing the point, Norco.
At one time the Cowboys and Raiders in the 70’s were the icons of pro-football. One turned into the 1st on Forbes list, the other into the 32nd on Forbes list. One has a brand new stadium, the other doesnt and cannot convince its city or even LA to fund one for it. One has never been a sustained basket-case on the field, the other has. One has fans filling the rafters at high costs, buying merchandise, etc. The other has fans boycotting their games/merchandise. Etc.
That’s pretty decisive what is “struggling” and what is “not struggling”.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:34 pm
What makes you think Mark Davis will be great at business or anything else?…what has he done that you know of that makes you think he will be smart about anything?
January 15th, 2010 at 11:35 pm
Then how did he get to the SB 7 years ago? Oh! I know Jon Gruden …except Jon Gruden wasn’t here.lol
January 15th, 2010 at 11:36 pm
Whats the point?…what have the Dallas Cowboys have to do with the Oakland Raiders?…until a week ago it had been about 14 years since they won a playoff game,…ever been to Texas?…more money there then Saudi Arabia,…the people who built that stadium did it wit hthere walking around money,…the niners have won 5 rings and cant get a bathroom remoded at candlestick,…this state is impossible to get a stadium built, unless you spend your own money.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:38 pm
If you want to compare Davis to Jones,..fine by me,..theres a wing in Canton that Al Davis has there,..Iv seen it,..Jerry Jones would have to pay admission to get in, just like I did.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:40 pm
What has it got to do with the Cowboys?
I’m illustrating how two close friends (Al, Jerry) have gone down to very different paths as owners. One has done “all this” to turn his product into a juggernaut, respectable, on-field and off, into 1st on Forbes list. The other has taken his empire to the toilet on-field and off, into 32nd on Forbes list.
It’s like a Tale of Two Cities observation.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:42 pm
Norco,
There’s 3 good points.
1) What has Mark Davis done?
2) Texas has enough oil money to pay for a stadium.
3) California is verging on bankruptcy and will not fund a Raider stadium.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:43 pm
Al Davis got into the HOF a long time ago before he went mad and flushed his empire down the toilet, and starting to damage his own legacy. Just cos someone got in the HOF for great service 20 years ago doesnt mean they’re immune from constructive and public microscopic criticism if they’ve gone on to write 8 new chapters of the years 2002-2009.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:45 pm
Valid point about Texas, but take a look at other NFL cities/teams. A lot of them arent as dire as the Raiders and some of them are small or non-oil market teams like Packers, Carolina, Tennessee, etc.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:46 pm
GG,..why not let Al Davis worry about all that?…its his team?…why are you so concerned about how Forbes magazine feels about the Raiders?…is all this really that important to you?…hows your potfolio?…I can tell you this, Al Doesnt doesnt have any concern about your career, bank account balance,…he doesnt even know you exist and yet you are fretting over him…odd behavior.

Post#55 complete lunacy at it’s best. Cut McNabb??
Fans are simply INSANE!!! Andy Reid aint no fan and he aint nearly as stupid as you guy’s think. The Raiders would give the the Eagles a 1st rnd pick in a NY second for McNabb and so would any other GM that needs a QB. The Bears gave Denver 2 1st for Cutler. We would be a playoff team immediately.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:48 pm
GG,..go google state tax laws, state by state,..its no accident large companies leave California,…either to Arizona, Nevada or Mexico.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:49 pm
I dont like how the man runs his team, but it is his team, not mine,…I sure wouldnt want his advice on how I manage my career, its none of his business.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:50 pm
That’s the most stupid retort, Norco. Why are you concerned about it? Derr, anyone who is a fan or analyst, who loves NFL, has a ‘right’ to be concerned. Why do YOU get concerned if the President flushes the nation down the toilet? Why do YOU get concerned if your bank starts going bankrupt? Why do you get concerned if your municipality starts abusing money and neglects upgrading infrastructure within your town? Etc of other examples.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:51 pm
Gotta run,,…will leave you with this,..I attend every game with friends,…we had a blast this year, one of our best years ever,..and we are looking forward to 2010,…if they win more then they lose, great, if not, bfd…goodnight.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:52 pm
GG,..all those other examples I do get concerned about, not a football team I dont though, not in the least bit.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:55 pm
You’re attitude is poor imo. You’re attitude is “so what if you’re fan”. Same attitude Davis has….damn be the fans, who cares about them, force-feed them manure and they have no reason to complain, just shut up and keep spending money on the product i own. Draconian business ideology. Fans have a lot of power to the owners. Without the fans, the owners have no income. And most of the smart owners take care to ensure the fans are happy with the product.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:57 pm
If you’re not concerned whatsoever about the Raiders slipping into embarrassment, then that’s actually detrimental and disingenious of you as a fan. It’s like if govt policy or corruption is on principle bad, the people shouldnt revolt, rally, and pressure powermongers into change for the good.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:57 pm
If youre unhappy with the product dude there are 31 other teams you know.

That says it.
No matter how bad the Raiders get, there will always be the faithful who will go to the games.
Not because the team is worth watching, but because their friends are there, and they have a good time.
Nothing wrong with that.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:58 pm
Its football GG, not life and death government affairs,…Jesus Christ man, its football,..people go to games to watch it and get drunk,..its football,..not really that important,..enjoy it for what it is.
January 16th, 2010 at 12:00 am
Football fandom is life and death lol. Since when was it not? It is far more the consensus/norm that fans of sporting teams fall in love literally and invest their lives into supporting and representing that team.
January 16th, 2010 at 12:01 am
If Al is going to change his ways and bring in someone to help run the team, it won’t be becasue of financial reasons. He can run the team in the red until he dies.
If Al changes, it will because he wants to. Because he is ashamed of the product on the field.
Because he wants to change. Not because someone tells him to. Even bankers.
January 16th, 2010 at 12:04 am
You’re just pretending to not care because the team sucks so bad for a decade. Like an in-built defense mechanism to protect yourself from aggravation and ridicule etc. But when the Raiders start becoming good again, or when they were good decades ago, you would’ve busted neck veins every day over them. Riding them hard thru each season with pride. It seems you, not me, have given up the ghost. Im still as always life and death. You’ve just resolved yourself to not emotionally care so much until they start being good again.
January 16th, 2010 at 12:07 am
If its life and death to you GG then you will almost always dislike football,…you have to go through dark periods to enjoy the salad days my friend,…be happy you have 3 rings, alot of teams dont have any,…think the Packers had a terrible time from that spell of about 30 years in between superbowls?..they didnt, they enjoyed their team, if you only feel good about your team when they are winning, well you are setting yourself up to usually be pissed off,…this past 5-11 season was great, to me,…good night all.
January 16th, 2010 at 12:08 am
Nope GG, youre wrong,..again.
January 16th, 2010 at 12:10 am
Haha, that short terse reply = “youre right GG”.
You know it. You’ve given up the ghost, fair-weather fan in the emotional sense.
If that’s how you prefer to conduct your emotional sporting life, that’s your prerogative, but dont give me this BS pointing the finger to me telling ME to support another team, like you think you’re a better/truer fan than someone else.
January 16th, 2010 at 12:18 am
Norco: “I dont emotionally care during these bad times, so Im a truer/better fan than you, go support another team, i’m earning cookies on a blog message board among other fans. Someone who doesnt care and doesnt complain > someone who does care and complains.”
That’s essentially “you” from what you’ve been retorting.
GG: “Grr, I emotionally care thru thick and thin, good and bad, and when things are bad, I will grrr and invest thought into critcizing the areas that really ought to be changed, discussing among other fans, because we ALL want them to be good again. We are ALL raider brothers and sisters together. I do not put down fans or try to earn cookies chest-beating trying to bully others that im a bigger/better/truer than others. When things are corrupt/bad like they are, we ought to criticize and not bury heads in the sand.”
That’s essentially “me”.
January 16th, 2010 at 12:21 am
So this Real MaddenRaider fellow spent almost all of Friday posting about Al Davis. What a dismal life dude must lead. I mean, Vlad the Impaler had a happier life than this clown.
January 16th, 2010 at 12:23 am
It’s the same evil as Herrerra putting down and mocking Gannon and Brown etc who are long-time loyal Raider fans/players for criticizing Al or the Raiders, offering to help the organization in some way. You’re not the “Raiders”, no one who played ever was, only Al is the “Raiders”, so you’re banned from this stadium, you’re an enemy, etc.
That’s essentially what you guys who put down complaining fans are doing. You’re Herrarra-ing fans.
January 16th, 2010 at 12:28 am
You have to kiss Al’s butt, bury your head in the sand, and deign Al a football god at all times, otherwise youre not a real fan so go support another team.
This is the single-most evil phenomenon in message boards around the world I see, regardless of the sport/team. Fans of a team that used to be good, but is now bad, where there’s a portion of fans who Herrerra other fans…trying to earn forum cookies, trying to chest-beat about how they and they alone are true/better fans, telling everyone else to support another team, and a clique of mods emerging where they try to censor the forum from any negative criticisms, start banning people unless they all herd like sheep.
January 16th, 2010 at 12:33 am
For an organization that prides itself on being mayhemic, it’s funny how fans or team forums want to eradicate mayhem/chaos among themselves, and instead want to turn “Raidernation” and the message board into a grazing field for sheep. We MUST all think the same, we must all baaa together in praise.

Fix the O line.
Get a BLOCKING fullback with functioning knees.
Get a run stuffing MLB.
Depth at CB.
January 16th, 2010 at 1:46 am
The haters argument as for why cable should be fired is because his strength is o-line and the o-line played horrible. I say yes the O-line played horrible but look at the players al gave cable top work with. We lose jake groke, gallery gets hurt, and cooper carlisle is regressing as he’s getting older, that added onto the fact that we have a patch work rt who shouldn’t start and wouldn’t start on any other team in cornell green.
Now tell me what coach could win with this line, or make the line look good with the players on the roster. Al should have picked Micheal oher instead of dhb and given cable some real talent to work with. Our o-line has been crap since art shell was coach, and since then al has drafted only one lineman and thats henderson. In four drafts he has only picked one lineman…smh Not even bill cowher can make this line good. He’d have to add new players in order for it to work and we all know who controls who comes in and who goes on this team.
January 16th, 2010 at 1:52 am
Russel okung should be our first pick. I dont care if we have to trade up to get him… We must get him.
And terrance cody is a mammoth of a man, I know alot of people rag on him on this blog but do not know just how athletic he is. The guy is over 300 pounds can dunk, and runs a for 4.8… at over 300lbs!!!
January 16th, 2010 at 5:30 am
Good Morning Raider Nation!
In case LMN is reading:
There was a conference in France where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American. During a break, one of the French engineers came back into the room saying ‘Have you heard the latest dumb stunt Obama has done? He has sent an aircraft carrier to Haiti to help the earthquake victims. What does he intended to do, bomb them?’
A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly:
‘Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply
emergency electrical power to shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000 people three meals a day,
they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and from their flight deck. We have eleven such ships; how many does France have?’
The silence was deafening.
January 16th, 2010 at 5:38 am
Morning NATION!!!!
Nice Post Exla….yeah
January 16th, 2010 at 5:47 am
Perhaps THIS is the year we start to build the organization. We already have Nnamdi and Shane, Bush and DMac (if he stays healthy) in the backfield, Miller and Meyers at the tights, Chaz and Murphy at the wides, Gallery and Henderson are still serviceable on the line, we can still get some production out of Ellis and Seymour; and Trevor and Matt show promise as good young defensive players (as do Mitchell and Huff). And we have a kick-ass kicker. Now, we need to really focus on building young, solid, strong lines. If I had my choice of any of the guys available in the draft, I would start with Okung and then go defense. Since Okung will probably be gone, there are other good options — but we need to go BIG this year.
January 16th, 2010 at 6:31 am
Excellent post exla! Excellent! For all the obvious and right reasons!
AS for that discussion last night. I think Norco Bob has the right idea and I have moved towards that position. The only difference is that I would like to see the team just be competitive. I know that the chances of being a good team are remote because of
davis…but the team can at least be competitive.
Cable should be fired. His teams DON’T get ready to play each week and the team suffers inexplicable blowouts to teams that aren’t really that good.
Get a competent coach that can get us to the 7-9 to 9-7 world. A guy like Fassell. He knows QBs and how to run the football. Have Fassell HC with Hackett as the O.C…
It still might not work. But at least it will make things interesting. We have what we have….and after 7 years of losing and 6 winning seasons in 20 years…I, just like Norco Bob, just enjoy sundays and the opportunity to kick back some drinks, good food and watch with friends….also for me its fun to go to a couple of road games per year.
Just be competitive and make the game watchable into the 4th QTR…to me that’s victory
January 16th, 2010 at 6:36 am

Here’s another for you LMN:
Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by plane. At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry on.
“You have been to France before, monsieur?” the customs officer asked sarcastically.
Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously.
“Then you should know enough to have your passport ready.”
The American said,
‘The last time I was here, I didn’t have to show it.”
“Impossible. Americans always have to show your passports on arrival in France !”
The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he quietly explained,
”Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1944 to help liberate this country, I couldn’t find a single Frenchmen to show a passport to.”
You could have

Here is another one Neilb:
A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included Admirals from the U.S. , English, Canadian, Australian and French Navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of Officers that included personnel from most of those countries. Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a French admiral suddenly complained that, whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English. He then asked, ‘Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?’
Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied,
‘Maybe it’s because the Brit’s, Canadians, Aussie’s and Americans arranged it so you wouldn’t have to speak German.’
January 16th, 2010 at 7:19 am
Norco didnt say that at all….he said, go support another team, and that he’s a true fan because he is an emotional fair-weather fan—when they’re good is the only time he’ll emotionally invest.
Also Florida Pete is right, not Norco. Accepting mediocrity is Al forcing the fans to kneel down and suck on the barrel of a gun, “keep buying merchandise and tickets, keep funding my empire that i willfully neglect and ruin, keep buying culinary manure and enjoy the taste, go back to sleep, everything is fine, your god is running the show, don’t worry, the greatness of the Raiders is returning next season.”
Norco said i was the one wearing a dunce cap. But he’s the one who buys tickets and food/beverages at the games, keeps buying merchandise and waving his little Raider flag for Al. It’s not the I or others are not true Raider fans….it’s all about the fan FORCING change at the top by boycotting and rallying. Al will HAVE TO listen to his hip-pocket. We’d be doing a disservice to the Raiders and their past greatness by just throwing our hands up and still funding it with a forced smile on our faces just so we dont drink our misery away every weekend.
Sure, Al is a legend and did great things league-wide and for the Raiders, etc. But everyone loses their marbles eventually, especially huge egos like Al. For instance, I love Paul Brown, but look how he eventually ruined the Browns with his stubborn megalomaniac ego in his old age.

imagine the raiders in a 3-4 alignment with terrence cody at NT along with seymour and kelly as the ends, remmember kelly had his best season as an end in a 3-4 scheme and we all know what king richard can do. Then to have scott and merriman come off the edge with howard and morrison in the middle in coverage which is their strong point??? man… Our d would be solid. Signing okung and lupati would sure up the line allowing us to get rid of green and carlisle or atleast put them at back up where thy belng

on some parts i agree with you, on what your country is based on, the principles are very great, sadly you havent lived by them for decades..
as to how its going here, we dont have ghettos, and all has the equal opportunity to become what they want, no-one pays for an education, no-one pays for medical issues… if anything drags the minority behind it will always only be the social heritage, and values based on their home-countries…
that said, we dont have many minorities, j3ws has been a part of this country for 400 years, and catholics as well. mus1ims are a bit tougher to integrate due to their sudden numbers, but still no biggy as compared to the problems the poor have in the US…
and lastly, Jazz-musicians saw Denmark as a safe-haven when they wasnt even able to get on the bus in the USA, here they were treated like everyone else…

Never been a big Brett fan, but the Packer/Viking thing makes it a big story
Kurt is a great QB and person. Would love to see him win another VL. Plus he is a underdog. Love underdogs.
Rex because he is one of those guys you love to root for. He fits in great in New York.
Caldwell because he stayed there under Dungy, worked hard and has done a great job. Good guys need to finish first now and then so the betas can get some.

The feeling around the Raiders is that coach Tom Cable will learn his fate by Tuesday, and there is little hope for him to return.
Cable met with Al Davis on Thursday after Davis finally decided to stroll into the office and meet with his coach. The two were expected to continue to talk on Friday, but that didn’t happen, so take this for what it’s worth since Davis has a tough time deciding what he wants to do. Cable will have to take the sit-and-wait approach regarding his 2010 job status.

Random Drug Tester,
Canada, like Europe, gets a nice indirect subsidy from the USA. Those countries don’t have to invest in defense because they know that there is a backup plan to bail out…..honestly, what does the world look like if it has an impotent military, economy and world standing. Seriously?
As for health care, the USA again subsidizes the world through pricing. We pay more for the same drugs, which allows the pharma companies to invest in R&D and innovation….
As for poverty…a vexing problem for a country of 300 million that continuously takes in the worlds poor leagally and illegally….the drug problem in the USA also contributes a great deal to this because of our close proximity to the drug production centers of the world….however, the blueprint here is fairly straightforward…
1. put in an honest effort to go to school (free by the way),
2. try your honest best and stay out of trouble,
3. and don’t have children before you are ready….
Again, we have problems, but we tend to set the pace…not follow the pace. Our economy is in transition, our banks in the ditch, yet we still spend billions on overseas activities…
What would Russia or China had done if someone had rammed an airplane into their population centers…and they knew who did it…my guess is their troops wouldn’t be handing out supplies and their bureacrats trying to nation build….

As for poverty…a vexing problem for a country of 300 million that continuously takes in the worlds poor leagally and illegally….the drug problem in the USA also contributes a great deal to this because of our close proximity to the drug production centers of the world….however, the blueprint here is fairly straightforward…
-yeah, Afghanistan is real close.
1. put in an honest effort to go to school (free by the way),
2. try your honest best and stay out of trouble,
3. and don’t have children before you are ready….
-Oh, was unaware you cornered the market on this behaviour.
Again, we have problems, but we tend to set the pace…not follow the pace. Our economy is in transition, our banks in the ditch, yet we still spend billions on overseas activities…
-only because you want to make billions on same.
What would Russia or China had done if someone had rammed an airplane into their population centers…and they knew who did it…my guess is their troops wouldn’t be handing out supplies and their bureacrats trying to nation build….
-Nobody wants to do that to us, and has no reason to.
* Name a war/conflict that wasn’t about securing oil-access where the US ever beat Canada into the action.

I agree with all your points, yet disagree with all your points.
It is just a matter of what is your point-of-view and/or value system.
Unfortunately, most Americans tend to think they are right and everybody else is wrong…somewhat similar to the Spanish Inquisition.
January 16th, 2010 at 9:28 am
Most Americans haven’t been outside their boarders. And it’s true for the most part we’re ignorant and have a fixed opinion about the “rest of the world” that I don’t know what source of information it’s based on, but is way off base.

^^^^^^^
Exactly unless the old man hired Gruden, Harbaugh or maybe Garrett or Cowher….coaches who will change the culture of losing…..then there is no point in firing Cable.
If he stays he needs to hire a LEGIT OC and play caller without a doubt. Probably fire the RB’s coach and WR coach though.

I really like you bro, but you are way off in your political views. Keep talking about football, and leave politics to the big boys. lol
===================================================
Hey, I love Raider football and in lock with your views on how to improve the team.
As for politics…the critiques of the USA are not grounded in realism. The USA has made mistakes..2nd Iraak, Vietnaaam…but made some good decisions like WWII, Balkans, and 1st Gulf War….
On top of this, I would still like to hear what country/system has it right. Not those homogenous Euro nations with the population of a large US city…or Netherlands, France and Britain that are about to be ripped apart with ethnic strife.
Based on actual results not hypotheticals…
Immigration: compare how the USA does it vs. Europe…LOL
Religion: No coutry in the world comes close to allowing a total freedom to practice what one will…in France they won’t let the Muslim girls wear the headscarf…in Saudi Arabia its illegal to worship anything other than Islam…
Diversity: Come talk to me when I see an Arabic guy running in prominence in Isreel…or an Indian Prime Minister in Denmark…how about a Korean guy in Japan….no one comes close…yet Louisiana elected an Indian conservative named Jindahl as Governor
Education: No country has as many secondary education institutions per capita than the USA…and access to them are fairly open (especially at community college and lower level state college levels)–How many foreign students attend Chinese schools?
January 16th, 2010 at 11:40 am
People take for granted the good things the USA has done of late. I am for honest criticism..but rhetoric about AMericans trying to steal resources is lukewarm.
Go see French and Belgian business practices in Africa
How about the Chinese exploits around the world.
No one covers that stuff because no one cares. its easy to beat up the US because of a really bad administration that was recently removed.
No one will sit back and take an honest assessment of what the world would be like today if the USA tended to its own knitting the last 30 to 50 years….or if the USA were to pull back tomorrow.
Get real
Now I am done

Tuesday could be key date for Cable
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on January 16, 2010 1:56 PM ET
Tom Cable may not have to twist in the wind much longer.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter points out that the NFL calendar may give us an answer to Al Davis’ intentions. Teams must inform their assistant coaches whether they will be retained by the third Tuesday after the end of the regular season.
Davis is expected to make numerous changes to his assistant coaches Tuesday. Cable is expected to learn his fate by then, as well.
One bad sign for Cable: Schefter says Davis has already started to contact potential head coaching replacements. We already know one guy who is interested.

SNB, good post on #320 bro. I agree with you.
The only issues I have is all these wingnuts running around and never admitting that the USA has never done anything bad. We’ve done both bad and good stuff. More good than any other country I can think of in the last 60 years.

January 16th, 2010 at 1:46 pm
My Picks for this weekend:
Arizona
Indy
Dallas
Jets (mostly because I can’t stand the Chargers)
January 16th, 2010 at 1:49 pm
Arizona wins the track meet and the Card’s D is better than the Saints ‘D’
Indy, because its just too hard to bet against a Manning
Dallas, because the Vikes O-line just isn’t getting the job done, and I don’t believe an Ancient Farve can put the team on his creaking shoulders and win.
The Jets, because they’ve got a great D, Revis is the real deal, and if they can run the ball and chew the clock they win a close one.
January 16th, 2010 at 1:53 pm
Total in this game was 57.
You know some brave soul tried to outthink it and took the under.
January 16th, 2010 at 1:56 pm
I think all the home teams win but the Vikings.
Will they all cover a TD, I don’t know?
January 16th, 2010 at 2:01 pm
I think I might be the only one on the Jets, They man handled Cincy last week, but is that telling? I’ll agree Cincy wasn’t as good as their record, but I just don’t think the Chargers have it this year. I think Revis will shut down Jackson, Gates will get jammed on the line, and Rivers has a rough day, and gets knocked around alot, and everyone knows Tomlinson is done.
The wildcard for SD is Sproules.
But the Jets have an incredible O-line, and the SD D-line is aging. Merriman isn’t the same player without the roids.
The Jets should be able to run the ball all day, and a then get a few big plays from Sanchez on the PA.
Essentially the Jets will do everything the Raiders hope to do next year.
January 16th, 2010 at 2:08 pm
Yeah, the Chargers suck. They havent won a game in a month and are totally backing into the playoffs.
January 16th, 2010 at 2:13 pm
Everybody’s on the Jets. The line moved from 9 to 7.5
They shouldn’t have made the playoffs in the first place. They lost in week 15 at home to the Falcons, than Peyton was doing his thing on them in the first half at home in week 16. He had like 180 yards at halftime and they were cruising.
Than the Jets played 6 quarters of football against teams that had quit, nothing to play for and were playing some backups and resting starters.
The Bengals choked last week, and well, are the Bengals. They haven’t won a playoff game in almost 20 years. 3 missed FG’s, sounds like them.
Jets are fraud, IMO, and I think the Chargers will paste them. Than the Dolts will choke next week and everyone will be happy.

As for taxes, we whine because the distribution of taxes in the US ( and other wealth) is a JOKE!!!! More Prisons than schools in Cali!!!

SnB,
You make some good points, but here are a few corrections:
1- You can practice whatever religion you want in Saudi, but not in public!
——————————————————-
International Religious Freedom Report 200
Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor
The country is ruled by a monarchy with a legal system based on Islamic law (Shari’a). The Government does not provide legal protection for freedom of religion, and such protection does not exist in practice. Islam is the official religion, and the law requires that all citizens be Muslims. The Government prohibits the public practice of non-Muslim religions. The Government recognizes the right of non-Muslims to worship in private; however, it does not always respect this right in practice and does not define this right in law.

Hey pot-head, here’s a clue. Don’t break the law and you don’t have to worry about the number of jails.
Here’s another one. The wealth is “distributed” to those who work. If you work, you can make money. You can also be anything you want here. Rags to riches.
As Don King says… “only in America”
PS – Europe has jails too. They don’t get a college education or tv in theirs though.
January 16th, 2010 at 3:28 pm

SnB,
I lived there for 6 years. I met J3ws, Chirstians, and Hindu who love living and working there.
They do have the right to practice what ever religion they want, and no one can inforce Islam on them, but it’s a Muslim country with Sharia as it’s laws, and people know that before they go there.

Sure they do. But what I am saying is that when it comes to comparing US vs other countries…there’s the rhetoric…and then there’s the reality.
In the USA one can practice any religion freely….in many other countries including Switzerland and Saudi Arabia…restrictions are imposed

watchin games like this makes me laugh at us . if the raiders score 17 points in a game we feel like our offense was movin . how pathetic is that ? and all u guys wanna do is draft defense ? our defense is better than even we know . if they didnt have 2 stay on the field 70 % of the game ,
. but chris johnson sukked dis year . guys get big money then bang whores , smoke blunts & eat steak. but wut can we do ?

I hope the Saints win and cover, than you know you can hammer the dogs after that.

Well I called it, I should try to follow it up.
Ravens with the points?? I like the Cowboys and Chargers tomorrow.
Every year it seems, there is one upset and one blowout. We see the blowout. Are the Ravens the upset? I’m taking the points.
Cowboys aren’t really that big of an upset.
