Seymour realizes the inevitable

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, January 19th, 2010 at 6:36 pm in Oakland Raiders.

For the second time in two weeks, defensive lineman Richard Seymour is talking up the possibility of joining the Raiders.

Last week, it was on Comcast SportsNet in New England. This time, it was with radio station WEEI in Boston.

Why? Because, one, it seemed like he did enjoy playing in Oakland. Second, Seymour realizes the Raiders have the franchise tag and aren’t afraid to use it.

The more Seymour talks up the Raiders, the more he’s liable to get paid on a long-term contract, rather than playing it close to the vest and settling for a franchise tag.

Al Davis made Nnamdi Asomugha the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history and Shane Lechler the highest-paid punter. Seymour’s a businessman. He understands this. And the happier he is about being a Raider, the more he’s likely to receive.

– Beat writer Steve Corkran confirms an NFL Network item which says the Raiders are interested in rehiring defensive line coach Mike Waufle. That would suggest that Dwaine Board has been given the green light to seek employment elsewhere. Board came in last season along with defensive coordinator John Marshall (who he worked with in Seattle), linebackers coach Mike Haluchak and secondary coach Lionel Washington.

– Davis was placed at the Raiders facility today, but no confirmation that he actually talked with Tom Cable. Cable wasn’t with Raiders scouts at East-West Shrine practices in Orlando, Fla., but that’s not anything out of the ordinary. The only head coaches there made in-state commutes _ Jacksonville’s Jack Del Rio and Tampa Bay’s Raheem Morris.

  • NorthernD

Jackson could land as the OC.
That way Cable can still run the show. The players like him.
Jackson could work with JaMarcus. If he gets results, he’s next in line for HC. If not, They’re both gone.

Davis may be unhappy with JaMarcus right now, but he’s unhappy period. Not a whole lot to be smiling about these days…

wassup jhill u see what happens when we dont make the playoffs? the only reason al davis needs to make a decision now is so there is something to talk about in here. its the same ol same ol everyday and now u have the grammar police runnin around.

  • jhill

Hue Jackson and Mike Wauffle, huh?

Confirmed interview requests. I wonder what that means?

Willie Brown is already gone, and our Dline coach is out the door to.

Pretty sure the Oline coach and WR coach won’t be far behind them out the door, lol!

I wonder if Al is going to have all the assistants in place agains before he actually gets around to the HC?

  • jhill

Now you know this is the best part of the Raider season, lol!

yeah priest i hear ya i got no problems with either one of you so i stay out of it. sometimes that stuff gets annoyin but yall all good with me. anyway if we do get hue jackson in any capacity that would be a good move. when i saw seymour comment on how they need to bring in some new coaches as well as a few players it makes u wonder how well these guys respond to this staff.

  • http://www.actionext.com/playlist_57486.html La Milicia Negra

—”The Raiders have received permission to interview Ravens QBs coach Hue Jackson for an undisclosed spot on their staff. The interview is for either Oakland’s offensive coordinator position (which was vacant in 2009), or head coach Tom Cable’s job. The Raiders are reportedly seeking someone to develop JaMarcus Russell. A talented assistant, Jackson would be capable of helping most quarterbacks, but no one’s going to salvage a QB that isn’t willing to put the necessary time in to get better. Meanwhile, owner Al Davis still hasn’t made official Cable’s fate”—

one year later the name re-surfaces, Al Davis needs to open up his wallet and pay these coaches some dimes…

Hue Jackson, Mike Waufle and Trestman all would be nice additions. If Trestman got the playcalling, I wouldnt mind Cable staying as HC… (cant believe I jsut said that, LOL)

  • armond

yeah jizzie i should be used to that now but not 2nite man!! u know big al will get the assistants in place as usual.i actually like the fact he is taking his time cuz there are some good staffs still in the playoffs. even if he keeps cable as coach it would be better to get some of these coaches around who clearly may be better suited to run the offense. also he may have a guy he can promote from within if cable flops this new season comin up. terrance cody is absolute must for this team even at #8.

  • priesttj

Armond, I’ve heard that mentioned but I didn’t read his quote. That says all you need to know. Even Nnamdi today expressed on national TV that he wouldn’t mind seeing RobO back and that shocked me. He also said that he thought continuity would be good for all the young players like Russell.

the media has played it up as if all Russells teamates were upset with him going to Vegas, I’m hearing something different.

  • NorthernD

And it’s not like we have a shutdown defense to give the ball back to our offense more often. Save for a few games, a three-and-out led to a long scoring drive for the opposition. A tough situation we’re in. A struggling offense with a defense that needs an offense that protects it.

    =======================

Bingo. The way our D is designed is to pass cover and pass rush to protecrt leads when teams are forced to eventually throw as the clock winds down.

ONLY if the offense can score which it hasn’t been able to consistently for YEARS.

  • Nnamdi21

I’m still laughing at the Chargers for re signing Norvelle thru 2013…

  • priesttj

I just think what Al Davis is doing is getting his ducks in a row. I said in here earlier that the peple that I’ve talked to in this organization are behind Russell and Mr Davis ,making sure he gets people in that can help him develope.

I also think Mr Davuis has had it with this ZBS and wants to go in another direction more of a power running game.

  • jhill

    Mt Cody ????

I just can’t see that man!

Would rather trade for Jolley, or let Seymour recruit Wilfork!

    It works for the Colts.

I think they are trying to get better against the run by drafting Shaunessy and the other DE’s last year, as well as bringing in Ellis and Seymour.

  • NorthernD

With all the extra Juniors coming out this year, mount Cody could be available at the end of the 1st/early 2nd. They could pick a MLB and then move up to grab Cody with their 2nd.

  • Nnamdi21

Cable stays and what pisses media guys like Jerry off is the fact Davis could care less about them knowing who is or isn’t going to be a Raider next year or beyond.

What cheeses me about Russell is Grads an obvious non talent at QB came in and made the offense work.

Bich o chet likes to point out I “whined” when Russell was pulled but the fact was, as some astute posters on here have mentioned, Russell has come in and led game winning drives.

One of his best was against that very same KC team. I thought he deserved a shot to do it again and he got one later in the season and WON didn’t he?

Did he under perform? Hell yeah, but there were extenuating circumstances like injuries to the O line (Gallery and Green forcing forcing Satele, Morris, Langston Walker and Khalif Barnes into action) and the under performing DMC and Farg were out too.

Add in Bey and Murphy and Russell’s supposed lack of prep and what do you expect?

    Fix tyhe O line please.

Takes a while and a lot of cash to revamp a ZBS to a straight line blocking scheme.

Get a center (the most important line man in the ZBS) which we haven’t had, keep Cable, let him focus on two things instead of 18 like he did last year and get rid of Green and Carlisle.

    Fix the O line please.

  • priesttj

Jhill, I was very surprised to hear Seymour actually say he wanted to recruit FA to come. That is a strong statement. It would be nice to hear Nnamdi say something of that sort.

In some ways Nnamdi disappoints me, he is making $11 mill a year and all I ever hear him do is whine.

    Extenuating circumstances? Maybe.

In that article about him being the Mardi Gras king, it says two of his family died last spring. That could have affected him. Caused him to lose focus.
If he re-commits himself to football and really works hard, then we should see improvement this upcoming pre-season.
If he doesn’t get drastically better, he’ll be gone. Excuses or not.

  • Nnamdi21

I’ve given up on the whole lets play who should Oakland draft next game. Davis does what he wants regardless of what we think or logic dictates.

Bey looks like a jokey joke joke he’s so bad.

Didn’t even have Russell to blame the whole time. Grad hit him right in the frikkin hands that one game

  • priesttj

I know Nnamdi but IMO that is the only way Cable keeps this job. We have the components for the scheme and you don’t have to make dramatic changes all at once. You can gradually do it without forcing guy’s to learn a new system in one year. All we need are a few more players that fit the mold.

—”The San Francisco Chronicle reports that Raiders owner Al Davis has actively been pursuing head coaching candidates for more than two weeks. UFL coach Jim Fassel and Marc Trestman of the Montreal Allouetes (CFL) are known to be among the interviewees. Current Raiders HC Tom Cable has not been fired, but his dismissal appears inevitable. The Chronicle doesn’t say if Davis’ impending interview with Ravens QBs coach Hue Jackson will be of the head coaching variety. Jackson could also be an offensive coordinator target”—

Northern D… Nah, it doestnt sound like Cable has much to say…

yall really think cody will last that long? we took a chance like that with reyrey last year and the bengals picked him 2 spots ahead of us in rnd2. that was a huge loss for us. i believe that u get your guy when u want him forget what the EXPERTS say. im all for him in rnd i just dont see him lasting that long. do like mcclain tho at #8 as well. another kid i like is price from ucla and a mid rnd guy brandon lang of troy.

    DHB was bad, no doubt.

But he is the prime example of why we need an OC!

If we stick with Cable then we stick with the ZBS I thinks…

I think we may change out C, RG and RT (we should anyway) and if that happens we just may add some beef.

I like Henderson at LT even though he faded as the year went on. He really missed Gallery and frankly, Morris was constantly out matcvhed and Walker had never played the position ever.

Get Gallery back and healthy it’ll go a long way toward helping Henderson.

  • NorthernD

The one thing that will scare teams away from drafting Cody high, is the weight and motivation issues. They don’t want to give a huge guaranteed paycheck. They don’t trust he’ll keep the weight down.
I can see teams going with safer picks this year, with the rookie cap coming in next year (Possibly).

  • priesttj

Nnamdi21, for the best player on your team to always be whinning about what he can’t do instead of leading the troops bothers me. I’ve watched the raiders for over 40 years and we’ve had the best corners to ever play the game and they never once whined like he does about what they wont let me do. He’s making too much money and the rest of the defensive players listen to him and if he’s whinning what do you think they’ll do?

I think you’re right about that. Alot fo weapons under utilized on this offense. Cable had on too many hats.

Anyone ever stop to think Davis might be meeting with Cable to go over new coaching hires and additions to the staff maybe not interviewing for HC job? maybe, but then again, Davis probably didn’t ask Cable wether or not he’d like Randy hanson back did he? lol!
