Jackson does Harbor Bay Parkway

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, January 20th, 2010 at 8:15 pm in Oakland Raiders.

With all the conflicting accounts of another typical offseason for the Raiders, one thing is for sure _ Hue Jackson was in Alameda, talking to team officials.

Assume that Al Davis was among them if you want, but at this point, with all the reports, denials and non-denials, it’s hard to know what’s up with the Raiders.

The Jackson visit, I’m assured, is a lock.

So where does that leave us?

First, Jackson wouldn’t be in the building if he’s not a serious candidate to be something. Since John Herrera said earlier today the Raiders have interviewed no head coaching candidates but have fielded calls from assistants, we’ll assume the reports about him being interviewed as a candidate for offensive coordinator are accurate.

Whether Jackson is under contract or not doesn’t matter much. The Ravens simply deny permission if he’s under contract, or perhaps they’ve already agreed in writing he could leave for a coordinator’s spot. He’s not here unless he’s available to be hired.

Jackson has considerable experience as an offensive coach. He coached running backs for the Redskins in 2001-02, was the Redskins offensive coordinator in 2003, coached wide receivers in Cincinnati from 2004-06 and was offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons in 2007.

With the Falcons, the line coach was Tom Cable. When Jackson was on the staff at Cal in 1996, Cable was the line coach.

Correction: Cable was with the Raiders in 2007. Jackson and Cable worked together only at Cal.

So it’s not a reach to think Jackson could be the new offensive brain-trust on a Cable-coached team. Or that Davis is at least examining the possibility.

In that scenario, if the Raiders were to again stumble out of the gate, Jackson could take over as head coach. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves, as we media-types are prone to do during yearly coaching searches.

As for all the Raiders denials about not talking to Fassel, Trestman, Harbaugh, etc., about the head coaching job?

In their favor is the fact they haven’t operated that way in the past, or at least since they returned to Oakland. The real “interviews” came after the head coach was fired.

On the other hand, every team in the NFL has ways of reaching out to prospective candidates should they dump their coach. That’s not the same as an interview. It’s more along the lines of, “In a hypothetical situation, if we fire our coach, are you interested or not?”

Every team has a front office to do those kinds of things. The Raiders? Not so much. Although it’s not impossible, I’m guessing if Davis wants to gauge the interest of someone like Jim Harbaugh, he calls himself, rather than having Mike Taylor or John Herrera do it.

And even those conversations leave a lot unsaid. Linebackers coach Don Martindale was convinced after a lengthy interview with Davis last season he was under consideration to be the head coach. The Raiders, by way of a Herrera statement after the fact, said he wasn’t.

Jon Gruden said he never remembers even being told he had the job. Lane Kiffin said he and Davis talked and the only thing he was asked is, “Well, do you like us?” Then he was taken away with lawyers to work out a contract.

The Raiders offered the job to Dallas assistant Sean Payton in 2004 and USC assistant coach Steve Sarkisian in 2007, only to flatly deny it when Norv Turner and Kiffin were hired. Even people who work in the building, when their guard is down, will admit as much.

So pick a side to believe and cross your fingers.

    Nnamdi21,

do we need more retread ZBS linemen or just better linemen?

    =================

Better linemen. I hope we don’t continue with the cheap retreads we’ve got like Green and Carlisle and I hope Tom Cable has nothing to do with their selection. His guys have worse then sucked. Kwame and Khalif? Complete wastes of space.

If Cable stays, so does the ZBS. If you’re giving Cable one more year and then want to ditch the ZBS they may go with ZBS retreads again and Denvers got a couple potential FA’s.

Maybe but we need depth at CB unforch. I think Routt’s contract may be up and he’s been an under achiever.

Jackson in Oakland for three straight days of interviews…for an OC position….hmmmm, not likely…

    “January 21, 2010

Jackson could be interviewing for Cable’s job, source says
Ravens quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson spent a third straight day in Oakland interviewing with the Raiders for a coaching position Thursday.

Despite media reports that Raiders owner Al Davis has recently been interviewing candidates for an assistant coaching position, it should not come as a surprise if Raiders coach Tom Cable is fired and Jackson replaces him, according to a source. The Raiders could not be reached for comment.

The Raiders like Jackson, 45, because he played a major part in the development of Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer, and the Raiders also like what he has done working with Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco the past two seasons. Jackson, who has been with the Ravens for two years, also has ties to California, having held coaching jobs at USC, California and Cal State-Fullerton.

If Jackson, who has not been a head coach, is hired, it wouldn’t be the first time Davis made an interesting pick for coach, including Kiffin, who was the offensive coordinator at USC when Davis hired him in 2007, and Cable, who had been the offensive line coach at Oakland and Atlanta before succeeding Kiffin.

Cable went 5-11 in his first full season as coach and is 9-19 since replacing Lane Kiffin early in the 2008 season, leading the Raiders to their NFL-worst seventh straight season with at least 11 losses.”

According to Hacksaw Hamilton, Kiffin is going after Cable for the OL job at USC…

Raider coaches dont flourish at Oakland because of the GM/Owner, but go elsewere and have good careers…

  • dtrain

    Nnamdi,
I agree that we need CB depth. I just don’t want any backfield with our first pick. I think we really need guys that can tackle and stop the run first and foremost. If that’s improved, Routt may improve some too.

    JT, interesting statement

Raider coaches dont flourish at Oakland because of the GM/Owner, but go elsewere and have good careers…

That tells me that Al is good at evaluating talent but not letting that talent flourish. And if Al is good at evaluating talent then all that stuff about the game passing him by is BS.

  • raiderdavenv

    rochochet, i don’t like you

  • JT

    Dtrain

I think the game has passed him by in the sense that in todays NFL, a 80 yr Al Davis who micromanages everything, is set for failure…

I think he is good at spoting talent, but he gets in the way of his EGO… he wants all the credit, and wants a puppet coach… so he dominates the raiders into failure LOL…

  • Raiders4eve

What AL needs to do is hire Mike Mayock, that dude clearly knows how to evaluate talent and knows which players will flourish in the right system. AL needs to make him VP of player evaluator or something along that line, pay the dude more than what he is making in NFL Network. He could hand pick a list of talent for AL to choose from and AL chooses who he wants but from that list. As far as Coaching goes, I wished AL would fire Sanjay Lal and the running back coach right away, Sherman Smith is still available along with Robiskie Falcons Wide Reciever coach. We need coaches who could teach these young players.

  • JT

    Dtrain

In other words, AL Davis needs a GM and needs to step out of the way so the raiders can progress into the future.

  • JT

Maybe John Herrera will be the GM LOL

  • inonewordraider

Al still can evaluate talent. Schilens is a hell of a 7th round pick and Murphy and Bush in round 4 are pretty good themselves. Al was laughed at for drafting Nnamdi. Quality coaching candidates need the autonomy Gruden asked for or they will get it elsewhere so unless we find another diamond in the rough like Gruden, we’ll continiue to suck

  • dtrain

    Inoneword,
I agree we do seem to do fairly well in later rounds. I know Nnamdi was a late first the same year that that DE was drafted too, (can’t remember his name but ended up in Carolina) but it seems as though generally our 1st rounders struggle.

  • Seymour Bush

To say Davis can’t draft is not quite right. Zach Miller, Schilens, Louis Murphy, Henderson, Trevor Scott, Nnamdi, Lechler, Tyvon Branch there are some pretty good players there. You may not like Tommie Kelly but he is a damn good player for being undrafted. The problem with the Raiders is they don’t seem very good at developing some of their higher choices like Jamarcus, Huff, DHB, Dmac. Gallery took a while to turn into a top flight player and part of that was they misused him and of course the coaching carousel certainly did not help his development.

we do need cornerback help… but not right away…

what we do need right away are linebackers…

    so…

    1st round… McClain…

    2nd round… Dan Williams…

    3rd round… Micah Johnson…

rest of the draft should be for o-line help…

Kelly and/or Warren need to take a big paycut…

that one that doesn’t needs to be released…

  • http://www.Move2Alameda.com KoolKell

The Raider Draft does better in the late rounds, while Davis is asleep.

  • Seymour Bush

We do need cornerback help, but I am with Pete that we could probably limp one more year with Routt. Also Branch might be able to play corner in a pinch.
Once again, I am looking at the excellent Left Tackles in the lst round, but I have to say, McClain might be a very good choice at #8. Everyone will say we took him too high, but what other good ILB is there? Dan Williams will be gone before we choose in the 2nd round, and remember we have 2 third rounders this draft! If Golden Tate was available when we choose in the 2nd round….

  • http://www.Move2Alameda.com KoolKell

I would imagine the few professionals left there in the front office, have more sway in the later rounds of the draft.

Only player that I am sure will be available is McClain, Dan Williams is projected as late first rounder, between 25th and 29th overall pick. Now a more realistic pick would be like this, considering AL’s fascination with the 40 time.

1st round… OL Campbell fastest LT in this draft project 4.8

2nd round… CB Javier Arenas AL will draft this speed demon for his return game and play making ability.

3rd round… DT D’Anthony Smith Al’s pick written all over him if he runs 4.8 or 4.9

3rd round MLB Micah Johnson he will be available this late

This of course pending a trade but I seriously think this would be the picks AL favors.

What Richochet is trying to say is very simple. AL mingles with coaches game plan and personal. No Quality meaning a good Coach who has options other then the Raiders would coach this team under AL’s mingling terms, all the coaches you mentioned were given complete authority over their teams, AL runs the show and the coach who comes here understand that and becomes a puppet just like Cable ” We are progressing” yeah right 5-11.
