Lots of Raiders coaching rumors floating around

Another day, another deluge of Raiders rumors.

While there’s no definitive word coming out of Raiders’ headquarters about head coach Tom Cable’s status, there’s a report that Al Davis is already interviewing potential replacements for Cable’s job.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported both Jim Fassel and Marc Trestman, a pair of former Raiders assistants, have talked with Davis about becoming the Raiders’ next head coach. Another thing both Fassel and Trestman have in common is they’re coming off championship seasons — Fassel coached Las Vegas to the inaugural United Football League championship and Trestman’s Montreal Alouettes won the Canadian Football League title.

Meanwhile, ESPN reported the Raiders have asked for and received permission to talk with Baltimore Ravens quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson. It’s not clear what position Jackson will be interviewing for, though it’s possible it would be as offensive coordinator — either taking the reins from Cable or running the offense for the new coach.

Connecting the coaching dots, Jackson served three seasons as USC’s offensive coordinator under then-Trojans head coach Paul Hackett from 1998-2000. Hackett is the Raiders’ current quarterbacks coach. Jackson also spent the 1996 season as Cal’s offensive coordinator, where one of his co-coaches was Cable, then the Golden Bears’ offensive line coach.

The 44-year-old Jackson enjoyed his greatest NFL success as the Cincinnati Bengals’ receivers coach (2004-06), where he received a lot of credit for developing Chad Ochocinco (er, Johnson) and T.J. Houshmandzadeh into top-flight receivers. That’s a skill that could potentially serve him well in Oakland, where last year’s No. 1 pick, Darrius Heyward-Bey, had a disappointing season.

Jackson has been second-year Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco’s only quarterbacks coach. However, Jackson has received some criticism for not elevating Flacco’s game this season.

Finally, NFL.com first reported that ex-Raiders defensive line coach Mike Waufle will interview for that same position with Oakland. Currently, Dwaine Board is listed as the Raiders’ defensive line coach.

    From Jerry Mac on 12/20/09

Russell’s teammates seemed genuinely happy for him.

“I don’t think words can explain,” tackle Mario Henderson said. “He’s the No. 1 overall draft pick. He’s been hearing it from Day 1. For him to come in and do what he did today was amazing. One thing we did was step up behind him. We didn’t abandon him . . . the thing he showed us today is he was ready for the chance, he came back out strong and helped us when we needed it.”

Said tight end Tony Stewart: “The man has been freaking dragged through the mud and people have been taking shots at him and the man has just been standing tall. He has a lot of growing up to do but when it came time he stepped up and did the job.”

Debo: looks like we were both wrong!

  • RaiderDebo

Hwnrdr and RaiderRockstar, I’ll meet you half way. Let’s see what he does this offseason. I’m very excited to see how things will go when he has the same wide receivers going into the next season for the first time. He could stand to lose some weight, but I’m not sure how much. I like the fact that he’s big. He’s taken a lot of hits and has missed just one game due to injury. Joe Flacco would be in traction behind our line.

Im more interested to see the upgrade on our O-Line, without that Jmac will struggle again. Also Cable refusing to run the ball made Jmacs struggles even more noticeable. Trestman is the guy i have been asking for , for the last 2 seasons now. He is an up and comer and i believe our offense is suited for his style, i wanted him or Leach.

    Morning all.

  • hwnrdr

Fair enough, Debo. And R8dr4lfe…yeah I’ve seen that too, but I also seen way to many mistakes from him also. Yes, given time, he is going to be great! And that is what I can’t wait for. But…he has to become a leader, not just say it! And yes…please, the zbs is crap already!!!

  • http://oaklandtribune.com r8dr4lfe21

Not to mention if Jmac misses a throw, now you got 2nd and 10 then Green false start 2nd and 15. Cable trys a run up the middle with McFadden gain of 1 yard 3rd and 14, forcing Jmac to get a first when the defense is blitzing an O-Line that cannot pass protect. That is a recipe for a fckd up series, but it happened to many times. Then there are the 3 deep routes from your own endzone, this Line cant block they are our weakness.

Going back to the Jerry Mac story,I thought Mooch was looking at the Raider job.

  • http://oaklandtribune.com r8dr4lfe21

Mooch was a rumor started from Kawakami.
Back to this Cable offense and him throwing his players under the bus. We know Jmacs work ethic was not there and now we know he lost 2 family members that were very close to him “his uncles”. That to me at his age is a big issue that is hard to bounce back from. Including all the BS we put him through by booing and writing crap, the media hounding him. Like Tony Stewart said he has been through some sh!t and stood tall. Jmac has always had a great completion %, now he cant hit a WR in stride? BS Cable and his dumb offense playcalling was the real dissapointment.

  • hwnrdr

I guess its just high expectations from Russell after the last 2 games of 08…Green p’d me off many times, and not only with Russell under center…so, you’re right…our line was not up to par. However, I did notice a decline in our run game the 2 times that Gallerey has been out due to injury…could that have something to do with it? Not making excuses…just opening the door…

You are right on. You make a great reference to the 1st play of the Jets game. JR got all kinds of flack for not having “pocket presence” on that fumble. What a joke! Warren Sapp reviewed that play on NFL Network. Did you see Barnes get pancaked by Pace on that play? JR never had a chance. My opinion is that if you don’t want the QB to fumble, don’t let him get hit. That’s Cable’s job and he didn’t get it done.

  • http://oaklandtribune.com r8dr4lfe21

Cable should have known along with Hackett that his pocket awareness wasnt up to par. Why not help the line with more 2 tight end sets, that we didnt see till the end of the season. That is incompitence on Cable. He knew this O-Line sucked from jump and he did nothing to fix it.

  • RaiderRockstar

    r8dr4lfe21 & RaiderDebo:

every Raider fan hopes Russell will turn it around and get his act together. hopes one day he’ll go from zero to hero. in Year #3 you expect to see some signs of life. there were none to speak of. in fact, JR was benched on Week 10 during the KC loss and never started another game – despite the backup QB being injured! the team played much better the last 7 games of the season under a couple of 3rd string journeymen like Bruce & Charlie. then Cable basically says (after the season) that we could have been a playoff team if JR was pulled sooner. Assuming Cable returns, what chance do you give Russell to start, much less be successful? slim to none IMO

this team has lost faith in him and for good reason.

  • hwnrdr

You know what? I’m going to say this: We all know Russell isn’t going anywhere. Coaching candidate rumors suggest that…from the beginning, it was either Russell or Cable…who got paid more? Well…
I never booed the guy, and I never boo “my” team! So, with that being said…I will support Russell in an open competition this coming season! Prove that he is worth the wait. When he does prove it, the Raiders will be a better team! Many pieces will have to fall into place though…but it does start with the QB…the leader of this team!

  • M Lonetree

Kinda feel sorry for the Buffies. Ralph Wilson fired EVERYBODY after the season and then the best he could come up with was Chan Gailey? Sad. Poor Buffies.

  • http://oaklandtribune.com r8dr4lfe21

The team played better, why was Gradkowski not benched against Dallas, why was Frye not benched against Cleveland. Russell beat the Broncos those throws are throws i dont know of any QB able to make. He had the Chargers beat the D let up, he came back against KC. So how good were we really the last 7 games.

I know, huh? Nice break in between Russell talks…LOL

  • http://www.safc.com/page/StadiumofLightDetail/0,,10281~1706060,00.html neilb

That pretty much covers it.Russell was replaced by a journeyman and when he was injured,a third stringer was called on instead of him.

  • RaiderRockstar

I blame Cable for his play calling and personnel decisions. He doesn’t have to tools to save this sinking ship …

when OL is your specialty and it’s the weakest link on the team it starts to raise some eyebrows.

still, everyone gave Andrew Walter a pass and how good did he turn out to be? you can’t make excuses in the NFL. If Russell can’t outplay Gradkowski or Frye he shouldn’t be starting. I don’t care how much money he’s making! play whoever gives us the best chance to win

  • http://oaklandtribune.com r8dr4lfe21

True and behind this line a mobile QB is better suited like Gradkowski. But fix the line and run the deeper routes and i like Jmac.

True there were 2 deaths close to #2,but that didnt seem to hamper his clubbin round town

  • The Judge

    RaiderRockstar- hehe

I wish, it is close though, Mark

Judge, being considered a leader at the QB position comes down to the same thing as any other position: you’ve got to make plays. Otherwise your words will ring hollow. JR knows this. He’s not going to pay it lip service. There hasn’t been enough playmaking in Oakland for a variety of reasons, but when it comes, he’ll be the leader. And there’s absolutely no proof for your assertion that he’s creating a divide in the locker room. Did you see everyone congratulating him after the Denver win? How about everyone, including Chaz, saying after the game how happy they were for him after being “dragged through the mud by everyone”???? Not ready to close the book on this guy.

    RaiderDebo

Yes, if you are a stud at making plays it certainly helps to step in to the role as a leader but being a leader is not just making plays. There are plenty of stud NFL players that haven’t assumed the role of leader. A leader calls you on the carpet when you are dogging it. A leader takes a bullet for you. A leader teaches.

I too had high hopes heading in to the season after the last 6 games of last season. J Russell looked pretty good. The problem is he should have progressed and not regressed. We don’t want a QB who can only perform when the situation is optimum. We want a QB who can raise his level of performance when things are bad around him.

I only want what is best for the Raiders. If I am wrong about J Russell and he comes in to camp in shape, focused and his peformance wins him the starting job then I will support him. I am just saying that I don’t think he has it in him BASED on what I saw this year.

  • RaiderRockstar

So how good were we really the last 7 games.

    ***

    2-7 with Russell
    3-4 without him

  • Mistabr0wn

I wonder if Cable agreed to take a demotion back to line coach. It doesn’t make sense he’s still around.

  • RaiderDebo

Judge, just yelling and screaming at your teammates doesn’t make you a leader. JR was asked about this and said that’s not his style. He believes that you can shake a layer’s confidence doing that. He wants to build them up. In the Denver game, did you see what he did when Bush dropped that pass on 3rd down that would have resulted in a 1st? He tapped him on the helmet, essentially telling him to keep his head up. The next drive, he led us to victory. There are lots of ways to lead. No question this guy has “it”.

  • Mistabr0wn

    LMAO

someone in here has a man crush on jafukus, either that or he is a paid raider employee.

the strongest arm in the world can’t think by itself, it has to have some help from the brain. russell got by on his arm many years but in the nfl you have to have something else and so far he doesn’t have it.

in the nfl you don’t have a lot of time and quick thinking is essential. russell is not a quick thinker, he looks at the person he wants to throw the ball to all the way. he exposes the receiver to getting their heads taken off if they catch it. in the back of your mind if you are the target of jamarcus you are thinking you’ve got a bullseye on your back. he can’t accurately read the defense, he can’t master the playbook and the coaches hands are tied for anything but the simplest of plays. why would you want to give that another shot?

    r8dr4lfe21 : why weren’t Gradkowski & Frye pulled?

Bruce only started 4 games and was injured in the 4th one. he won 2 out of 3 games he started and played the way through. he had us in position to beat Washington too. Raiders folded in the 4th quarter

Charlie moved the ball pretty well in the last 3 weeks, even though he may not get credit for any of those victories. the offense wasn’t anemic like it was under Russell anyways. Even coming back from a concussion Frye was playing well against a tough playoff hungry Ravens D until he injured his back & ankle.

Both QB’s had 1 season with the Raiders and fewer than 4 starts – yet both somehow surpassed 300 passing yards in a game. something Russell hasn’t done in 25+ starts and 3 seasons with the team. Please explain

On Fassel: I think he is a bland guy, more of an analyst than a leader. His NY teams played down to competition, something the Raiders need tons of help with. I think Fassel has been out of a job since 2006 for a reason. He is not somebody I see lighting a fire under the underachieving Raiduhs…

Raiderdebo, let them cry and complain and make up fairy tales about Russell it doesn’t matter man Russell will be a Raider wether they like it or not………..period

To try and make reason with unreasonable people is a waste. This kid can get it done and he has gotten it done on several occasions. Wether they admit it or not. Let them keep beating their collective heads against the wall as long as they can take the pain. So be it…

I see. So Gradkowski starts the Washington game and we’re down seven at halftime, but we blame the loss on JR. But JR leads the winning TD drive against Denver and Charlie Frye should get the credit because he was “moving the ball pretty well”. Oh and by the way, we lost the Dallas game and the Cleveland games because of JR too. C’mon man.

i have a feeling….that tonight’s gonna be a good night, a good, good night……that cable is going to stay, as he should and that al’s looking for a oc.

Another year upon us while we all sit at home watching the SB…I’ll give Russell another year…no matter the circumstances…he has to get it! He may have some leadership qualities, but showing up late to team meetings and falling asleep are qualities of a leader, also!

if al really wanted to win at all costs instead of just looking at what the costs are, the raiders could go to the playoffs next season. he is more concerned with money than anything else. he knows he has to secure his son’s future, that is why he sold parts of the team off.
