Past searches have been disasters
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, January 21st, 2010 at 8:50 pm in Oakland Raiders.
If Al Davis seems a little gun shy with regard to changing coaches this time around, it’s with good reason.
It’s not like Davis has been adept at zeroing in on a promising candidate and reeling him in.
You’d think someone with as much practice at hiring and firing would, even by accident, bring home a winner.
Except that since 2004, Davis has brought in Sean Payton, Bobby Petrino, Ken Whisenhunt and Steve Sarkisian only to have each one of them walk away. Taking that into account, it’s difficult to accept Davis’ yearly claims about all the great coaches that want to be with the Raiders at face value.
There’s no guarantee any of those names would have worked either, given the environment. Particularly in the case of Petrino, who bailed out on the Atlanta Falcons after realizing he had no taste for the NFL game.
The men who ended up being hired as those candidates walked away _ Norv Turner, Art Shell and Lane Kiffin _ were a combined 16-52. None were ready to deal with life as a Raiders coach under Davis for different reasons. Turner didn’t have the charisma, Shell had been away too long and was intractable, and Kiffin was too immature to finesse a situation the way Jon Gruden did.
I’ve already made the argument that the problem rests with Davis’ role as general manager, a point that was echoed in Thursday’s papers by columnist Monte Poole.
There doesn’t appear to be any chance Davis will fire himself for that role, or that there are enough confidants remaining to convince him that he should.
Which means Davis will be, as President Bush called himself, “The Decider.” And while Davis may still have an eye for good candidates, his ability to close the deal is another story.
Payton was the choice to succeed Bill Callahan in 2004 until Jerry Jones gave him a huge raise to remain in Dallas as an assistant. After Turner was fired, exec Mike Lombardi pushed hard for Petrino. The Louisville coach came in for a stealth interview, received an offer but turned it down because of family concerns.
Whisenhunt interviewed in Alameda and even checked out local real estate with his wife with a broker provided by the club, but withdrew his name before getting an offer.
The end result was Shell.
Sarkisian, a former Raiders quarterbacks coach and USC co-offensive coordinator, was targeted to replace Shell. He interviewed well and went home to Southern California thinking he was going to be head coach of the Raiders, only to wake up the next morning and think better of it. That led to Kiffin, who was to join Sarkisian as offensive coordinator.
Kiffin ended up being Davis’ biggest nightmare.
Cable, at least, has his team playing hard in December and seems to handle pressure well. He understands the organization and wants to work with Davis.
As disappointing as some of the premium draft picks have been (Russell, Darren McFadden, Darrius Heyward-Bey), the Raiders locked up Nnamdi Asomugha and Shane Lechler last season, will likely do the same with Richard Seymour and Sebastian Janikowski.
There are some intriguing and promising young talents, particularly on defense (Tyvon Branch, Trevor Scott, Matt Shaughnessy). It’s a young team that may not respond to wholesale change in the coaching staff.
The owner has a laundry list of complaints, the biggest among them another losing season, too many blowout losses and the regression of Cable’s hand-picked offensive line.
But it might be easier to bring in a new direction to the offense with a coordinator and play-caller.
Or Davis can get back into the business of hiring another head coach, where his success has mirrored what has taken place on the field.
EXTRA POINTS
Not much in the way of real news today.
– Jim Harbaugh’s agent, Jack Bechta, joined the parade of denials regarding interviewing with the Raiders for the head coaching job.
– Kiffin had a rather unique honor bestowed upon him in Tennessee. Hold your nose for this one.
– Profootballtalk.com reported (or passed along rumors) that Cable could be reunited with Kiffin at Southern Cal.
– The Washington Redskins hired former 49ers line coach Chris Foerster as their line coach, a position Cable, if available, would have been suited for, given coach Mike Shanahan’s background in zone blocking. Kiffin hired James Cregg, the former Raiders assistant who left the club to join him at Tennessee, to an unspecified position.

Tomlin drafted Rashard Mendenhall and thats why he started over Speedy Parker, he also drafted Wallace, besides, Tomlin is clearly in command you can notice it by the way he talks and says who is starting or not. Cable needed AL’s permission to bench Jawalrus. Ken Whisenhunt controls everything in Arizona you gotta agree some coaches have more leverage then others.

Parker was hurt. The Steelers drafted a RB because Bettis retired. How can you say Tomlin made those calls over the GM?
Tomlin was nearly fired this year. The owner came out and said who important that winning steak was for his tenure, lol.
I do agree that some coaches have more leverage than others. But I also know that there are plenty of coaches working under the same conditions.
Davis wanted Moss here, Kiffin didn’t. Davis wanted Crockett on the roster, Kiffin didn’t. You think Davis wanted Josh McClown and Mike Williams?
A lot of coaches have SOME things placed on them.
January 21st, 2010 at 9:03 pm
Well, it seems Jerry also agrees with Richochet that no Quality coach would want to work with AL. I dont blame them. I doubt any of you guys would wanna work for psychotic owner like AL. Imagine you having prepared a gameplan on thursday only to come Friday and see your plan removed. We are playing 90% man to man defense, some would say the Giants won SB playing that style, thats wrong. Giants mixed up against NE, they played more zone coverage then anytime else. When you playing against elite teams, you show them something pre snab and you do something else post snab, thats how you create turnovers. Raiders are very predictable in defense, offense is horrible without a running game. Of course, reason we cant run is the weak OL and Jalwarus inability to throw the ball accurately. I believe we need changes in the philosophy this team implements. Jhill kept saying that we need to do what the Jets are doing, strong defense and run the ball 60% of the time. AL will not watch a boring game like that, his mind is set on old school vertical passing. Why do you think Cable focused on passing the whole training camp? That is what he promised AL when he interviewed for this job. If a coach tells AL we will play smash mouth football, you will see him walking past harbor bay right away. No chance we can win with this system.

Bro, just a question and please give me a yes or no answer
Do you agree that AL Davis is a control freak as an owner?
January 21st, 2010 at 9:07 pm
The guys agree to coach the Raiders and then leave before a deal gets done?
It’s pretty easy to see that they couldn’t come to FINANCIAL terms. If Wisenhunt was looking for property, wouldn’t that tell you he was ok with the parameters of the job?
Sean Peyton prepared to take the job if not for Jerry Jones cock blocking?
Cheap as Al not opening up the petty cash drawer and making it happen.

Yes I do …
Without question. Like most owners, Al Davis is a ridiculous control freak.

We ran the ball under Gruden, Callahan, Turner and Kiffin. Vertical passing attack does not mean throwing the ball 75% of the time. It means taking some shots down the field. 4 or 5 deep shots per game is all that’s needed.
January 21st, 2010 at 9:20 pm
Jhill
Under Kiffen, we played WCO system, but under Cable it was pure old school 80 play vertical passing.

Norv Turner runs a vertical passing offense. They run the ball well and then chuck it deep down the field. His team went 12-4 this year.
January 21st, 2010 at 9:38 pm
The pat’s run a vert game so do the Saints and many other teams. Very few teams run a true WCO anymore. Since Gruden got fired I don’t think anyone really runs a true WCO to be honest.

Al is the GM!
RICHOCHET: Exactly. The biggest faux paus.
===========================================
Did Carroll and Shanny Rat get to pick their whole staff? No hangovers? How about Buffalo?
Richochet: Don’t know about Carroll..but you can bet Shanahan has full control over who’s on his staff. You can also bet that Shanahan, and most likely every HC in the league, (except the Raiders) has the authority to terminate an asst, if need be. How could they not?
======================
Well outside of DHB and Mike Mitchell, Russell, Gallery, Huff, and DMAC were not bad picks at the time they were made. Easy to go Monday morning QB on us.
RICHOCHET: Outside of? lol..Two picks just this last year that made no sense to anyone. Russell, Huff, and DMAC? Huff and DMAC were way down the list of priority needs at the time, and both are suspect. Russell was that “deep threat” Al can’t resist. Obviously that could have gone either way. obviously it didn’t work out.
##############################
You mean like The Titans owner told Fisher to play Vince Young? (side note: can’t believe he made the Pro Bowl!).
RICHOCHET: I’m sorry..but which of the ten does that directly apply to? None.
#####################
Only person I’ve heard say that is Sapp. No argument that Ryan was a puppet. Marshall sure seems to be mixing it up though.
RICHOCHET: The list is long on explayers that have no shortage of things to say about Al butting in..from Romo to Collins to Rice to Sapp. How many do you need?
#######################
Or it just goes back to he needs to fork over the cash and hire a better coach. Kiffin and Cable picked those players!
RICHOCHET: Picked what players? Where did you ever see that? For that matter Kiffin didn’t want Russell. Obviously as HC he had no say in it.
######################
The rest sound like personal issues you have against the owner or are lumped in to the whole Kiffin thing. Kiffin shouldn’t have acted like a spoiled brat. So Al told him NO you can’t bring your daddy here. Play out the year and hire someone else when Ryan’s contract is up instead quitting and trying to get fired.
RICHOCHET: lol..that’s not how it happened, and you know it. Al pulled his ‘YOU DON’T FIRE ANYONE. NO ONE FIRES ANYONE AROUND HERE BUT ME.”..THAT’S when Kiffin said if I can’t control my staff, fire me. Al didn’t. Al dared him to “quit if you want”..knowing he wouldn’t have to pay him. Kiffin didn’t take the bait. Kiffin went public with his displeasure in Al’s offseason total chaos fiasco, starting with Walker. Comments from Kiffin about Al butting in prompted Al to threaten Kiffin for going public with what was going on (Ironic that Al did the exact same thing..no?) INCLUDING Al getting together with Ryan to game plan the defense, ignoring Kiffin. Al sends a warning letter. Then Kiffin suspends Randy Hanson, where Al promptly OVERRULES KIFFIN.
You’re welcome to state exactly which of the 10 is wrong.
So far you haven’t

Greenbay, Seattle, Atlanta, Carolina, Jacksonville, Vikings, Eagles, etc are some teams that implement WCO, Pats are not vertical, they play the Spread Offense just like 49ers started doing.
January 21st, 2010 at 9:49 pm
HERE’s WHY NO QUALITY HEAD COACH WILL EVER COME TO COACH FOR AL DAVIS.
1. Al hires the assts. has stated only HE hires and fires (See Kiffin/Ryan)
2. Al, regardless of opinion, still makes head up ass decisions regarding draft.
3. Al, regardless of what HC wants to do, decides, when he sees fit, who plays, and who sits. (See Norv benching Collins, stating Tui has the last 4 games, where immediately was overruled by Al, where Collins proceeded to lose out those same games)
4. Al will decide to toss out a whole scheme, on a whim, because he wants the defense or offense to try something different (See Sapp, Gannon, Rice, Brown..LOTS)
5. Al refuses to accept that he needs help/GM..whatever..and continues to make stupid decisions that hurt the team/organization (See Walker, Kwame, Hall, Wilson, Kelly)
6. Al refuses to pay his HC’s anywhere near what they are worth (”See EVERYONE)
7. Al goes public with dirty laundry instead of handling things with class (See OverHeadProjectorGate)
8. Al stupidly announced to all that he was not just terminating his HC, but wasn’t going to pay him HIS CONTRACT, STATING JUST CAUSE..which tells every quality candidate that the contract they sign might just be voided, for one of the owners demented reasons, that could end him in court for years to recoup.
9. Al is known for calling down from the box, to call in a play (See Gruden, flipping off Al up in his box, after one of many calls. See Sapp stating “We’re going deep. The phone from Al just rang.)
10. Al is known for his little spies that he puts in that run to Al tattling (See Shell/Lombardi. See Cable/Hanson)
There is more..but..I think an even 10 IS ENOUGH.
Anyone of those would keep many QUALITY head coaches away.
All of those?
IT’S NOW KEEPING THE WHIZ’S, THE PAYTON’S..ETC..AWAY.

What cracks me up is that people think getting a GM is some magic potion or panacea. All teams other than the Raiders have a GM under the owner maybe the Cowboys are the only team that doesn’t have a GM thta’s not the owner. A GM isn’t going to gaurantee a damn thing. Mr Davis will still operate as he always has. The GM will just be a co-pilot and there is already someone filling that role.
Fool like Monte Poole are of the assumption that a GM will all of a sudden make things turnaround. I think that’s very ignorant thinking. The Raiders are the Raiders and Mr Davis is Mr Davis. He will get this fixed one way or the other his own way. Blockheads like Monte Poole simply can’t see that they want sme magical fix. GM screw up all the time look how long it took the Saints and the Cards and the Jets, they’ve had GM’s for decades what took so long?

Quit abusing the right to be stupid, Priest.
NO ONE IS SAYING GETTING A GM TURNS EVERYTHING AROUND, fool.
What they’re saying is GM is a full time job.
A job where the person is ACTUALLY HELD ACCOUNTABLE.
A job that has to be done well for EVERYONE ELSE TO BE ABLE TO DO THEIR JOB.
The fact Al is NOT in it full time..that he is NOT held accountable..and that he is NOT doing even an adequate job is the issue at hand.
Quit pretending you don’t know that.
You know..sometimes admitting you’re wrong gets you more props than your silly tirades, refusing to admit you blew it..both on Russell, and Al.
You won’t, because you’re a small man.
Which is exactly how small insecure men act.

The great Scott Pioli gave Matt Cassell $63mill try getting that back for the next 5 years. They all screw up. The is no magic potion and no one has cornered the market on success in the NFL much of what happens is luck and happenstance. The draft is a crapshoot and great players get hurt, ie;Bo Jackson and get old Mike Haynes.
Biulding great teams is very difficult. It took the Steelers 40 years to do it.

And the word spread is way overused in today’s media types. The spread is really just the run and shoot. 3 wides is not the spread and just because you get in the shotgun doesn’t mean you’re in the spread. You can put 4 recievers in the pattern with 2 TE’s and 2 WR’s 1HB. And call it the spread but it’s just putting the lead blocker inline.
The WCO is almost obscolete.

If you really know about football, why would you say Pats implement vertical game when clearly they implement the Spread Offense?
Btw, teams that dont have a GM, they have a coach who has full control over his personal something Cable never had, do you really think Cable wanted JR and DHB to start nine games? No coach with a right mind would start the season with two rookies and inaccurate QB, look at the Cardinals, Whisenhut showed up and first move he did was bench Leinart cause he is inaccurate. Profootballtalk.com reported today that Cardinals wide receivers dont trust Leinart, don’t you think it is the same with Jamarcus? Do you think Schillens praised Frye and Gradkowitzki but said no comment about JR for no reason? Come on Priesttj, we can sit in here all night and keep disagreeing but clearly your beloved MR Davis cost us the season this year forcing JR, DHB and Murphy to start.

What IS IMPORTANT is the contract between The Oakland Raiders (Ownership) and AD FOOTBALL INC. It’s a lifetime plus agreement that gives Al Davis 100% operational control of he team irrespective of his ownership percentage. Needless to say, AD FOOTBALL INC. is most likely generously compensated for services rendered and there is probably a poison pill clause that if any of the owners try to kill the agreement, they blow up first and will probably all be responsible for all legal fees. Remember, he arranged this agreement back when he was in total ownership control and could basically do whatever he wanted. This is one of the main reasons he’s so careless with the cash to players. For the most part, it’s NOT his cash that he’s spending. It’s the investor’s money. I would also imagine that the AD FOOTBALL INC. contract will survive his death and continue into perpetuity. That contract will be wort a ton of money to whomever controls it, especially if the then in-place owners want to buy out the contract.
====================
I forget the details, but I recall reading something where if the shares were sold, couldn’t be to another share holder, and had to be offered to Al first.
obviously, considering how Al did exactly that with Wayne Valley, acquiring another owners shares, making him majority owner, Al would make sure no one could screw him over like he screwed over his previous partners.

Monte Poole just hates Al Davis…………period
Most of the stuff Monte writes makes no damn sense anyway. And the little logic he does use is specious at best. If Al wants a GM he’ll hire one but that GM will do what Mr Davis wants done…..period
Mr Davis already has people in place that he trust, all we need is a few pieces in the right places to win. This is a very young team lacking confidence and that comes from winning. Nnamdi himself said and I agree they’re already got it going in the right direction and hopfully next year will show that.

I dont know any coaches or bottlewashers, I do know two football players but rarely keep in touch with them. At the gym I used to workout at, I chatted couple times with Dana Stubblefield, he himself said that NE Spread Offense is unstoppable in 2007. I know another cat who is related to Ellis Hobbs and he said that NE implements spread offense, so my question to you, why is it that you can construct a counter argument or show me a link that says NE doesnt implement spread offense? I gave you links, do you wanna meet football players who will tell you that?
January 21st, 2010 at 10:43 pm
Priesttj
Nnamdi said in ESPN that he wished he played in GB just like Charles Woodson, he said he wished the Raiders implemented that kind of philosophy to use him in 4 positions. He already stated his dislike for being used 90% in man to man situations. He wants Cable to remain the coach cause he wants continuity. Why are you quoting Nnamdi when he clearly wants changes in how the Raiders operate, come on man get your facts right.
January 21st, 2010 at 10:44 pm
Posters write that the Raiders have better luck in the later rounds of the draft.
I was just reading about the Shrine game and not many coaches are there to watch the players. It’s almost all scouts.
So if Al doesn’t get out to see any of the players, he’ll have to let the scouts make the picks in the later rounds, therefore, we get better players in those rounds.
January 21st, 2010 at 10:47 pm
Raiders4eve,
I’m sure that Nnamdi would prefer the challenge of playing man up against the opponents best WR, just like Revis does.
He could probably live with the 90% man to man if he had that chance.

You say you agree with Nnamdi, so do you agree with him that Raiders should implement a 3-4 defense with high blitzes and using Nnamdi all over the field just like Woodson (BTW he is defensive player of the year if u didnt know)instead of Mr Davis beloved Man defense?
January 21st, 2010 at 10:48 pm
Raiders4eve, when you say spread exactly what do you mean? do you know? When I say the Pat’s run a verticle game. That means the direction of the patterns they run. The opposite would be a horizontal offense which primarily utilizes horizontal routes crosses, slants, drags and the like.
The vericle game utilizes digs, go’s, deep outs and post patterns. Now when you say spread what are you referring to? Cause maybe ou just don’t understand what verticle means.
The word spread is used very loosely. The Pat’s do not run the spread in it’s truest form.

January 21st, 2010 at 10:53 pm
No I don’t I think what we do is unigue to what Nnamdi’s abilities are. The reason he drafted nnamdi is to implement a defense that is aggressive in the front7. The secondary should be aggressive with the safety play. CWood played that same position and never complained because he knew what the defense phylosophy was. Huff and the safeties have t be more agressive and become better playmakers. Nnamdi can go to the HOF playing that position. He’s already getting tha money and the status.

You are funny man lol. Read this http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d814aa692&template=with-video-with-comments&confirm=true
let me quote what Nnamdi said
Asomugha said he gets a little jealous when he talks to former teammate Charles Woodson about all the different defenses that the Green Bay Packers run. Asomugha cited an interview by New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton, who credited his team’s defensive turnaround with taking some of the best parts of what many teams do.
Asomugha said he lobbies his coaches so much for those type of changes that they laugh at him when he keeps bringing it up. He said simplicity in itself isn’t always a problem, citing the success the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had earlier this decade running the Cover 2 on almost every play. But the Raiders apparently don’t have the talent to succeed that way.
Good I rest my case.
January 21st, 2010 at 10:57 pm
Aso also stated, quite clearly, that he was tired of the Raiders D being so predictable.
Jerry had a thread on it.
Aso pointed out a few defenses he wished the Raiders would run.
For that matter, Aso also was one of the first to state Al made a mistake letting Hall go.
(So did Gabril Wilson. Even though Wilson led the team in tackles, that comment still got him released.)

I have a mental illness that makes me care about what happens to this disaster called the Raiders.
Do any of you truly feel the Raiders will be any better than 5-11 next year? Than why the he!! are we talking about it? It’s so hopeless.
Is there any reason to have any hope at all that the Raiders will not lose double digit games next year?
Everybody seems to jut be waiting for AL to die and it isn’t gonna happen, so really, what does a Raider fan do besides sit and wait twenty years for Al to die. This talk of failing health has been going on for the last 10 yrs.

Btw, what I mean by spread offense is clear but I will copy and paste what I mean from Wiki. The spread offense begins with a no-huddle approach with the quarterback in the shotgun formation much of the time. The fundamental nature of the spread offense involves spreading the field horizontally using 3, 4, and even 5-receiver sets (some implementations of the spread also feature wide splits between the offensive linemen).
Priesttj
The more you spread the offense, the more the defense is forced to cover deep which makes them highly unlikely to blitz.
Now under vertical offense is going deep while giving the QB enough time to through either by 3, 5 or even 7 steps drop.
January 21st, 2010 at 11:05 pm
An 81 yr.old man in “failing health” dies…He doesn;t keep hanging around, no less continue to run the day to day operations of a multi million dollar operation. And he doesn’t just run it, he MICRO MANAGES IT by all accounts. This is ridiculous. Something has to be done. This is nuts. You’re telling me that it’s conceivable, even probable that we could be looking at a guy in his 90’s calling in football plays from a press box in a professional football league? This is insane and yet it is allowed. When does it stop/ When WILL it stop? What if Al lives to be 110, will he still be closely running the day to day operations of a multi million dollar organization?

January 21st, 2010 at 11:10 pm
I know what the spread is predicated on….everyone knows that. But that does not mean that the spread desn’t employ verticle properties.
And that’s what I’m trying to get you to understand running a spread doesn’t mean NOT running a verticle game. Get It?
The tru spread is trying to get 4-5 recievers in every play irregards to the down and distance.

But that is not all the Pat’s do they get verticle on you real quick if you focus on Welker. That’s what I’m talking about If you watch the spread that say Florida runs there are several verticale routes. The WCO rarely if ever employed verticle routes unless the gameplan was tweeked to take advantage of a team the didn’t cover well deep.
They were only looking to get 1st downs while the spread employs both horizonta and verticle routes. Bu the Pat’s do not exclusively run the spread.

=====================================
It’s a modified vertical game.
The Pats usually have Welker running crossing routes on a dump off if Brady doesn’t have time to go deep.
The Raiders will keep a back and a second TE in to block, instead of sending them out into the pattern.
The problem with running a true vertical game from the spread is lack of blocking.
The Raiders will send 2 or 3 into the pattern, all deep.
The Pats will send 4 or 5, but two will be dump offs.

Keeping with what Nnamdi said, I think switching back from 43 to 34 would be the way to go. They did that back in the 90’s with pretty good success.
January 21st, 2010 at 11:51 pm
Nnamdi needs to shutup and play………..period
All players want to do something they think works for them. We don’t have the talent IMO to play a 3/4 although we do run it in some situations. If we add, well maybe now that I think of it. The switch of Scott to OLB does give us that ability. We do it quite a bit now. It’s just not our base defense that’s all.
I have no problem running a 3/4 or 4/3 as long as it’s effective makes no never mind.
Yeah you may be right as I think of it they could pretty much do whatever they wanted with Dez Bryant and the way Matt S developed. We have some veru impressive talent on defense.
January 21st, 2010 at 11:55 pm
NorthernD, they’re not all deep we use the same principles that the Pat’s do. We use a man in the short zones and TE intermediate and a clear out with a post or 9 route. It’s every level. It forces t play the entire field. We run a lot of digs and some drags but not enough drags IMO which would help the QB.
January 22nd, 2010 at 1:30 am
Digs, curls and hooks would help JaMarcus the most. He seems to be better when he can just lock onto a receiver and hit him with the fastball. His throws tend to be off more when they run more complex, touch routes.
With the Raiders personel, what kind of offence could they run?
The current Cable offence seems to be a mish mash of plays scripted on a chalkboard with no idea of the players they have, or the flow of the game.
Could they run?:
Colts offence- simple pre-snap with lots of post snap adjustments depending on the defence?
No- that would require a QB and WR working on all the possible reactions and working OT. Not likely with JaMarcus.
Gruden offence-Multiple pre-snap sets and motion.
Possible, but would require lots of OT and practice.
Shanahan ZBS- Basic formations, stretching the run wide and creating cutback lanes.
No-the key is having a legit QB bootleg option. JaMarcus is too slow, Gradkowski too fragile.
IMO, the best offence is a simplified Patriot spread offence. Three WR with TE.
Easy pre-snap, have one or two keys, and two or three options.
JLH is not Welker. So they could use Murphy in that role.
They would have to beef up the line in the draft, though.

Norv Turner runs a vertical passing offense. They run the ball well and then chuck it deep down the field. His team went 12-4 this year.
—————————————
Seymour – way off on this one. They were the 2nd worst rushing team in the league this year. They were a pass first offense just like the Colts are this year.
January 22nd, 2010 at 1:41 am
Late night tip, I know nobody’s going to read this anyway. But just wanted to say, Jerry, how did Gruden finesse the situation better than Kiffin? Seems to me Gruden came in and cleaned house, too. Didn’t Gruden clash with Jeff George right from the get go? Al’s guy? I think Gruden was given more choice of staff, too. I recall reading once that Al told him to just keep Willie Brown on. From there, it was his call. I don’t think Gruden finessed the situation any better than Kiffin. I think Gruden was given more control, period. My theory is that Al hired Kiffin to excite fans, thinking they were getting another Chucky, due to Kiffin’s age, etc, but really had no intention of letting him coach the team.
January 22nd, 2010 at 1:56 am
Somebody read it.
IMO, the biggest difference between Gruden and Kiffen? Gruden could sell ice to an eskimo. Kiffen looks like someone who needs a slap.
I think Gruden could talk to Al, and got more leeway. He sounds positive and up beat when he talks.
Kiffen probably just irritated Al. He sounds whiny.
January 22nd, 2010 at 2:07 am
Kiffin got given a lot of slack his first year. He was allowed to bring in players he wanted. Play who he wanted. Do what he wanted. It really did seem that Al tried not to interfere.
January 22nd, 2010 at 2:10 am
Now one thing I want to point out about all these “coaching rumors”. Here’s how you can tell it’s bogus to a large extent. Notice all the “inside sources familiar with the coaching situation” (i.e. reporters) who say that these people were already interviewed and he’s interested in Moss, Gilbride etc.
Now….notice how ALL of these supposed head coach interviews were on people not in the league. So, there’s no need to request permission from other teams to interview them. So there’s no way to really prove it one way or the other. The two assistanct coaches (Line Coach & QB coach) we interviewed could be verified.
January 22nd, 2010 at 2:23 am
Kiffin brought in Williams from Detroit who sucked. He brought in McCown who sucked. He brought in the coaches he wanted (except for DC). And probably 1st year if he tried to bring in his dad he would’ve been allowed to. 2nd year he was already being such an idiot that Al and him got into a little beatch fight which was stupid from both sides.
January 22nd, 2010 at 2:25 am
It’s like when they sign a free agent at 12:01. You know there were plenty of secret phone calls going on.
IMO, if they wanted to keep an interview secret, they could do it very easily.
I think all these stories are just to keep the coaches from asking for too much money or control. Make it look like Al has plenty of options…
January 22nd, 2010 at 2:28 am
Comparing Gruden to Kiffin is like…comparing Tom Brady to Jeff Garcia.
Brady marries the hottest chick on the planet, and Garcia loses his girlfriend to the back-up quarterback. And T.O. calls him gay.
January 22nd, 2010 at 3:47 am
“the regression of Cable’s hand-picked offensive line.”
I’m not sure the entire O line was “hand picked” by Cable.
Gallery was already there. So was Henderson, Carlisle AND Green.
He may have ahd a say in Satele, don’t know but Chris Morris was drafted in 2006 while Cable was still in Atlanta.
Still, with choices like Kwame Harris, Khalif Barnes and Eric Pears don’t inspire alot of hope in the choices he actually may have had a say in.
I think Langston Walker was more of a no choice at all situation, so can’t really include him.
If Cable and the ZBS stays, I pray they get a new center and revamp the entire right side.
I hope more Cable’s recent choices were bargain shopping and a simple matter of trying to choose the best possible from the discard pile.
I hope he gets more time with the O line in 2010 too…

Good Morning NATION!!!!
January 22nd, 2010 at 4:32 am
Until the Raiders put together a decent offensive line and get some decent play at QB, they’re going to be mediocre at best.
Doesn’t matter who the coach is.
The fact is we have one of, if not the worst O-line in the NFL.
The fact is Russell was the worst starting QB in the NFL.
Add a raw, inexperienced group of WRs to the mix and you’ve got an offense that can’t score enough points for the team to succeed.
Jamarcus Russell can NOT be salvaged. He can get in shape and develop a work ethic. Won’t matter. He’s too stupid and inaccurate to be an NFL QB.
The O-line needs to be completely rebuilt. With the exception of Henderson and the injury prone Gallery, this unit needs to be completely revamped.
Until the Raiders can score points they’re not going to be competitive.
It’s that simple.
There is no easy fix by changing coaches. A coaching change might be warranted. But it’s not a cure all.
Al Davis must do a better job of drafting, making free agent acquisitions, and trades.
Build an O-line, accept the fact that Russell is a monumental bust, and go from there.
Easier said than done.
January 22nd, 2010 at 4:43 am
Vertical game vs West Coast… Granted the Saints and Pats rely on big plays down the field. I’ll admit I see a lot more pats games over saints living here in New Hampshire. The pats rely on seller and falk on underneath routes. That is where their success starts. I’m all for big plays down the field but there low percentage plays. I’m sick of our running backs. Putting us in manageable 3rd and 4 or 5 and all of our receivers are running 15 + yard routes…. Pick up the first down!

Good Morning Nation!!!
So….looks like another L O N G offseason…
Oh well…life of a Raider Fan!!!
January 22nd, 2010 at 5:45 am
Cable and his hand picked offensive line is like saying you can have the first pick at the junk yard…Once Davis blows the premium picks on track stars, and picks pretty good later round prospects, then cable can choose from the FA bargain bin. He wanted one of those “cadillacs” as he put it last year. We could be sitting here with M Oher and a vastly improved Jabustus Russ, but no. (I know Jamanboobs is only concerned about his progression through the church’s chicken drive thru line) point being, hand picked is far from the truth.
January 22nd, 2010 at 5:49 am
Wait…Brady married the what chick on the planet? That is by opinion, Northern D. I think Garcia’s wife is way more hot than Gisselle…or whatever her name is. And, of course, it is my opinion. Also my opinion is the mother of Brady’s first child is “sexier” than Gisselle…(can’t remember her name…Bridget someone)…
January 22nd, 2010 at 5:49 am
Comon Jerry, this has never been Cable’s “handpicked Oline”.
He has made due with what has been available and was hit hard with injuries this season.
You build a solid Oline through high round draft picks and we will start that this year.
Mr Davis builds teams from the outside in and the lines are the next step.

too many blowout losses and the regression of Cable’s hand-picked offensive line.
But it might be easier to bring in a new direction to the offense with a coordinator and play-caller.

I don’t think the staff is the problem on defense. I am a Mike Waufle fan though.
I think the staff issues would be resolved by replacing Cable, Lal & Hanson …
so look for all 3 to be retained
most of the problems lie with personnel imo. who’s on the roster and then who’s starting
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:38 am
Good morning AM crew!!
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:38 am
I havent posted players just positions that imo we should draft….
With our 1st pick….
Lamarr Houston, Texas
Height: 6-2. Weight: 300.
Projected 40 Time: 5.02.
Projected Round (2010): 3-4.
11/28/09: Having a monster year for the Longhorns with 37 tackles, 13.5 TFL and five sacks in 11 games.
2/12/09: Accumulated six TFL and 1.5 TFL in 2008.
7/30/08: Lamarr Houston started 11 games as a sophomore. While his bread and butter is stopping the run, Houston pitched in with 12 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. He also registered 66 total tackles. Houston was an All-Big XII honorable mention.
And with our 2nd pick….
D’Anthony Smith, Louisiana Tech
Height: 6-2. Weight: 300.
Projected 40 Time: 5.04.
Projected Round (2010): 4-5.
11/28/09: Has 48 tackles, 4.5 TFL and 2.5 sacks in 11 games. A 4-3 under tackle only.
We play a 4-3….So we dont need a NT type like Cody or that dude from Tennesse, imo
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:42 am
how to fix the defense, personnel wise:
1. cut Warren
2. paycut for Kelly
3. add a quality DT/NT in the draft or FA
4. slide Morrison to SLB or put him on the trade block
5. add a quality MLB in the draft or FA
6. let Eugene & Routt walk in FA
7. give Mitchell some reps as nickel corner
8. add a quality CB for depth (round 3 or lower) in the draft or FA
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:42 am
or of course trade down and still try and get those 2 true 4-3 DT’s
January 22nd, 2010 at 6:43 am
That will be ideal, Rockstar! Once our D can stop the run…everything will come into play (with your scenario).
Thanks for the breakfast buffett…

how to fix the defense, personnel wise:
1. paycut for Russell
2. open competition at QB
3. new play caller
4. cut Satele, Carlisle & Green or keep them as reserves only
5. add quality C, RG & RT in the draft or FA
6. find a way to use all 3 RB’s
7. start the most productive WR’s (walker in the doghouse? DHB starting as a rookie with stone hands?)
8. more double TE sets (good for the run game. free up Miller in the passing game too)

Brian Price, UCLA – Scouting Report
Height: 6-2. Weight: 300.
Projected 40 Time: 5.05.
Projected Round (2010): Top 25 Pick.
1/3/10: Brian Price has declared for the 2010 NFL Draft. Price just had an amazing junior campaign, so even though he’s just 21 in April, coming out early and striking while the iron’s hot was the right move.
11/20/09: A 4-3 under tackle only, Brian Price has 16.5 TFL and five sacks in 10 games as a junior.
5/19/09: Despite being a sophomore, Brian Price recorded 14.5 TFL and 4.5 sacks.
Any one of these 3 true 4-3 DT’s will do us wonders because Warren and Kelly just dont have “it”
Bo I would be willing to trade Dmac for “it”!

BSJ, we never let him go. He was a restricted free agent and Al slapped a tender on him.
Titans upped the tender offer and we chose not to match it. since he was undrafted they didn’t owe us any picks. it’s not like we cut him!
at that point he wasn’t worth millions, as the Titans found out. Routt was at least equal in coverage
Justin Miller was the KR we never should have dropped. Rankin, Russell and Holland on KR was pretty bad this year. We even tried Reece there towards the end! LOL

January 22nd, 2010 at 7:33 am
QB Matt Nichols, Eastern Washington
Despite the wind and rain, Nichols had a good day. He’s a big player (6-3, 220 pounds) and he was throwing the ball well in the rain and wind and keeping the nose of the ball down. But the thing that really stuck out was how he looked in the two-minute drill at the end of practice. We liked his composure, decision making and how he took what the defense gave him. He had a good internal clock in the pocket as well. He would go through his progressions, but didn’t bail off them too soon. He would feel the rush and know when to step up or slide and when to deliver the ball. He was quiet most of the week, but he caught our eye today and it will be interesting to see if he can carry this over to Saturday’s game.
C John Estes, Hawaii
Estes used his quick feet to get into position, delivered a strong punch and locked on so he could sustain his blocks during team period. We were also impressed with the range he showed, getting downfield to throw blocks on screens or runs.

——————————————————————————–
Jackson is being considered for offensive coordinator. Cable called plays last season, with Ted Tollner serving as the passing game coordinator.
Cable said Jan. 4 that he is open to vacating the play-calling duties if Davis feels the Raiders are better with someone else in that role.
Jackson has a well-earned reputation for working well with young quarterbacks. He is credited with developing Joe Flacco with the Ravens.
It’s no secret that Davis and the Raiders are intent upon finding the right solution when it comes to getting JaMarcus Russell, a three-year player, to the point where he is the unquestioned starter.

I wonder why Cable didn’t just quit since it’s obvious so much is being forced upon him?

So call your shot now Rockstar …
Will Russell cost Jackson his job, lol?
***
great question Jhill, but a bit premature for me to issue a response.
If Jackson is hired as OC and Russell is the starter Week 1 of the regular season we’ll just say Hue is a longshot to have success
I want to see what other changes occur this offseason (if any)
January 22nd, 2010 at 8:02 am
Is Paul Hackett already packed up and outta here?
***
the Bears are interested. Hard to know whether or not Al is willing to let him walk though
best thing for the RAIDERS would be to keep Hackett. best thing for Hackett would be to head for Chicago and turn Cutler into the franchise QB they have so much invested in. If he can fix that turnover issue and get a #1 WR then they’ll be competing with the Vikings & Packers next year
Cutler is willing to put the work in. Russell isn’t.
as QB Coach, who would you rather be responsible for?

Looks like Bayou might have been right about the Hackett Russell beef. He called that back in preseason.
I just don’t see Cable being mad at Russell. I see it more of him backing his staff with Hackett. I mean, how could Cable be mad at the guy who got him the job? If Russell doesn’t sign off on Cable, NO WAY he makes it past interim coach.
January 22nd, 2010 at 8:05 am
Well, it looks like Cable ain’t going anywhere, so you fellas better start getting used to the idea.
As I’ve said for weeks, he’s a good football coach and this would be the right decision.
If they hired a new coach, you guys would be bashing him by week 6, just like you pretty much do every year.
So, let’s all do this together. Repeat after me.
Tom Cable is our head coach.
Tom Cable is our head coach.
Tom Cable is our head coach.
Tom Cable is our head coach.
Tom Cable is our head coach.
There, now you have the hang of it. Keep practicing tonight and it’ll eventually sink in and we can move on to the next topic at hand. . . .

#3 Open competition at QB between Russell and Losman
***********************************
Are you trying to bait me? Where’s Bruce???
And I agree with your 1-3 (except your obvious omission), but not as much on 4 and 5.
Bush is our best RB, without any doubt. He should be the starter, and the Raiders should be focusing on finding ways to get D-mac in space and down the field. They need to give up the idea of him being a 20 carry back. He is averaging 1 fumble every 20 touches in his career so far, and for every 4 games he plays, he misses 1. He is not that type of back, the sooner they realize it, the sooner they can start using him in more ways where he CAN be effective.
And at WR, competition is great, but if they are going to roll with Russell (yes I said it), can we at least give him some consistancy at WR? Chaz and Murphy are the starters, develop with them, and the other guys can compete for 3rd, 4th, and 5th spots. Bruce can handle commotion at WR, Russell can’t.
And good morning!!!

Don’t know what it is about these kids these days and their since of entitlement. You can’t talk to them a certain way or they feel disrespected. Look at what Russell says about getting on other players. Can’t talk to grown men that way he says.
It’s ridiculous man!
But Weasel reports from AZ that Russell is working with some famous Olympic trainer. He says the gauntlet has been laid down that he get in shape or he will be cut. No were some of us questioning why things like that weren’t mandated from day 1? And not just of Russell, but guys like Bush, Sands, Walker and all the other fat arsses on the team?

“Meanwhile, our old buddy Aaron Wilson has a report for the Carroll County Times that the Raiders definitely won’t confirm. He writes that Ravens quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson is interviewing for Cable’s head-coaching position, in addition to the offensive coordinator job.
The Raiders acknowledged that Jackson was interviewing, and Cable wasn’t involved in the interviews. We’re sure Cable is thrilled with that development.”

I know Jhill –
I’m generalizing of course, while knowing full well that you’re one of the few voices of reason around here.
On another note, why do I have a feeling that Sean Merriman is gonna end up a Raider next year???
I’ve got real mixed thoughts about that. One the one hand, he has the fire that nobody on our defense seems to show visibly. So, I like that.
On the other hand, I’ve always had the suspicion that he’s a classic case of a guy who only played well when juiced up.
And having said that, I also know that it’s a biotch coming back from a torn ACL.
What do you fellas think – worth the gamble? Or is he washed up meat? I’m sure he wouldn’t mind stickin’ it to the Chargers is they let him go.

Tom Cable is a good head coach?
What gives you that Idea?
Is it his 20-54 record as a HC?
Is it his inability to rally his team to back to back victories?
Is it his play calling?
Is it his choice of signing players like Satele, Harris, Barnes and Pears for the o-line?
Is it his decisions on who gets playing time like Harris over Henderson and Fargas over Bush?
Is it his ability to get the offense to put up 12 points a game?
Yep, what a great head coach!

Snyder has no problem landing the coaches that he wants and he has been just as bad as Davis in the past. Even though now Snyder has claimed to have turned over a new leaf.

But Jhill:
Consider this scenario:
JaMarcus Russell clearly was not ready to play this year.
Period.
And you know the owner absolutely, and rightfully so, wanted to develop the kid he just forked out 30million for.
So, you have to play him. And you have to play him with 2 rookie receivers.
And let’s not pretend Cable had a choice in that matter, because we all know that’s BS.
So, with that premise, Cable was screwed until the season was already lost. Only then did Al concede how hopeless the situation was. Only then did Cable have the authority to make some change.
So let’s be real.
This isn’t about calling 4 passing plays from the 2 yard line. Russell was the QB. Are you telling me that with brilliant play calling, that this team would have been drastically different with that reality?
I think not.
If he actually hand-picked the O-Line, then he did a crappy job of that.
Is that grounds to fire him?
Hell no.
I’ve said it before – head coaches have no business dipping their fingers into player-personnel decisions.
Stick to coaching the damned team and let the scouts/GM/owner (mostly one guy in our case LOL) do their job.
It’s the same reason why Shanahan/Holmgren/Gruden were mostly horrible at player evaluation.
Cable is a good football coach and he’s got the ear of these players. Around these parts, that’s a huge plus right now.
January 22nd, 2010 at 8:54 am

Former Raiders defensive line coach Mike Waufle will interview for a position similiar to the one he held with the Giants, according to NFL.com.
Waufle was the defensive line coach in New York and part of their Super Bowl-winning team. He was fired after this past season. Waufle, indeed, is confirmed to be in Oakland tonight.
If he is interviewing for a similiar position as reported, then it looks like he is interviewing for the position held by Dwaine Board. His time spent in Oakland went so well, don’t be surprised if he gets consideration as defensive coordinator if Davis decides to make a change there as well. Let me say that I was for Cable coming back this past offseason, and I am for simply adding an Asst HC/OC and keeping Cable now.
But the reasons we both agree, and everyone else agrees, that we need a new OC is what we are talking about here.
Cable was forced to play DHB, Murphy, and Russell, yes. Unfortunately Chaz and Miller got hurt at WR. I get all that. But because he was forced to go with that hand doesn’t mean you stick with the gameplan going that you drew up in the offseason.
Wasn’t his fault that Satele couldn’t grasp the offense or Gallery got hurt. I get that. But where are the adjustments to the gameplan? Why did we not see the jumbo package until the away game at Denver?
I could go on and on, but you know I don’t have to. The fact that you know he needs an OC says it all.

Cable was forced to play DHB, Murphy, and Russell, yes.
***
Cable said that when he approached Davis about making a change at QB, Davis said “you’re the coach. you make the call”
doesn’t sound like he was FORCED to play anybody. Was he also forced to play Fargas, Eugene, Warren, Carlisle & Green? was he forced to keep Nick Miller on the 53 man roster? was he forced to use garbage for kick returns?
January 22nd, 2010 at 9:07 am
Prediction: Cable stays. Hue Jackson in at OC. Cable turns over playcalling duties and focuses his time on the o-line and HC duties. JaMarcus, Gradkowski and Frye all stay. Raiders draft an o-lineman at No. 8. All but maybe one or two assistants stay. After all the speculation and gossip we actually take a very conservative approach to this season. However, Cable will have to produce a winning product or he’s gone.
January 22nd, 2010 at 9:08 am
Jhill:
I totally agree with your premise.
In reality, this team should have been run exactly the way the Jets were this year.
Do what you do well – run the ball – and play it safe until your QB develops.
But, that’s what Kiffin was doing last year, and it clearly pissed Al off because he wanted Russell to simply wing it and learn on the job.
So, if you’re the head coach now, are you simply supposed to blow him off? No.
You try and make it work. It clearly didn’t work.
I guess you could say Cable should have had more stones and told Al to fiok off after week #4.
That’s real easy for a schmuck like me to sit here and say. I’m not the one who has one of only 32 jobs on the planet.
And I agree with you – he was doing too much last year.
But, truthfully, the few times when he had good play from his QB, I thought his play-calling was fine.
But whatever – if he’s stripped of that duty, I’m not losing any sleep. And frankly, we should have a true O-Line coach as well.
The head coach needs to do one thing.
Manage the team.
That’s all.

I do believe that Al has been and may still be undecided on whether or not to keep Cable, but I think he ultimately does keep him.
I also think it’s likely Al reached out to Fassel and Trestman to ask if they’d be interested in the OC position and both declined. Trestman is supposedly the genius coach of the CFL and Fassel has said more than once his biggest career regret was taking the OC job with the Ravens and he wouldn’t want to come back for a non-HC position again.

Got Tollner & Hackett to show him the ropes.
Spent all offseason, even preseason on forcing a pass first mentality because it needed so much improvement.
result: running game sank and the passing game was still in the tank with JR at QB.

As much as part of me always thought Kiffin was a little weasel, I respected that part of his coaching.

man, i just don’t see a very big upside keeping Cable…
too many negatives…
not saying he’s a bad coach…
just saying he’s not a very good head coach…
for me, HC are managers… they should be focused on managing their staff…
Cable tried to be the staff…
January 22nd, 2010 at 9:15 am
So, if you’re the head coach now, are you simply supposed to blow him off? No.
——————————————————-
And I think Cable went too far the other way trying to give Al what he thought he wanted.
You know, I thought the way Cable started off game 1 was not bad at all. A lot of 2 TE sets. Mixed Bush and McFadden well. Didn’t try and pass too much. Should’ve won that game man!
I know Gallery got hurt in game 2 and it was over for our Oline after that.
I hear you, I hear you.

Rockstar,
Probably because the Giants were supposed to be one of the top 2 or 3 defenses in the league this year — largely because of their loaded d-line (Tuck, Umenyiora, Kiwanuka, etc.) and ability to rush the passer with 4 — and they absolutely stunk in games they weren’t going against JaMarcus Russell. The d-line was extremely underwhelming and the defense as a whole was terrible. The d-coordinator was axed immediately but I guess they felt the need to clean house beyond that as well.

Knapp had the play calling for what? 2 games in 2008? Cable took it away. then he was wearing 3 hats (HC, OC & OL coach)
decided to keep 2 of those hats this year and the hand-picked OL coach he wanted from Cal was pushed to the side when the hand picked scrubs Cable wanted there didn’t perform. 3 hats again.

—————————-
So many Rob Ryan prevent specials to choose from. How many games did we lose in 2007 (Kiffin’s first year) when we had a lead in the 4th quarter only to give it away immediately. Don’t forget that Browns game we won where Tommy Kelly blocked the 40-yard FG as time expired. Rob should’ve cost us that one as well. And don’t forget this year’s game against the Browns when Ryan’s defense let us march into the red zone all 4th quarter only we shot ourselves in the foot with turnovers, poor play calling, etc. to let him off the hook.

I remember a PC from Al talking about how the ball was going up in the air now because he demanded that Knapp call plays instead of Kiffin.

You’re right, Cable punked Knapp. I guess he didn’t want Knapp getting a shot a credit for Russell and then Al giving him the shot at 1 of 32.

Look, if the Raiders had played the Jets this year in the same fashion they played the Bills last year, I say the final score may have been more like Jets 20, Raiders 10.
The defense is on the field less. The QB has way less chance to make stupid decisions, etc., etc.
Many games could have been managed the same way and we would have had more success. Don’t believe for a minute that Cable didn’t know that. But again – you just paid a kid $30 million freakin dollars. You had to see it through before you pull the plug.
My point is, he was trying to let this kid get it done.
The kid never did get it done. He saw it. The owner finally saw it.
Basically, the result of last season was not much more than a complete talent evaluation of the youngsters on this team.
The fans got screwed because we were subjected to some horrible football.
But I think some good will prove to come out of that audition. Guys like DHB, Murphy & even Russell will have thicker skins.
Russell was humbled, disgraced & had his tail shoved between his legs. Those are all good things if we want to move forward in a positive way.
Now Russell either comes back knowing he has to EARN his job, or he’ll be riding the bench.
Those are all positive things that came out of last season for me.
I simply want Cable to have a fair shot at winning.
And you only get that with decent-to-great QB play.
January 22nd, 2010 at 9:23 am
I actually think we’re really set up to run a 3-4 right now. Seymour and Kelly are best suited to be 3-4 DEs. Morrison would be OK as an ILB in a 3-4. Scott and Howard could be great as 3-4 OLBs. We just need a NT and a thumper at the other ILB position. Warren has the size to play NT but I don’t think that’s how he plays the position.

When you look at who we have at RB vs who we have at QB & WR it seems pretty clear what our gameplan should be.
I just don’t see how Cable & Russell can both hold prominent roles with this club going forward. one will either have to take a backseat or be out all together. too much failure to overcome. you can’t hide one or the other sometimes, but never BOTH

Legally, the club is a limited partnership with nine partners — Davis and the heirs of the original eight team partners. Since 1972, however Davis has exercised near-complete control as president of the team’s general partner, A.D. Football, Inc. Although exact ownership stakes are not known, it has been reported that Davis currently owns 47% of the team shares.[57]
Ed McGah, the last of the original eight general partners of the Raiders, died in September 1983. Upon his death, his interest was devised to a family trust, of which his son, E.J. McGah, was the trustee. The younger McGah was himself a part owner of the team, as a limited partner, and died in 2002. Several members of the McGah family filed suit against Davis in October 2003, alleging mismanagement of the team by Davis. The lawsuit sought monetary damages and to remove Davis and A. D. Football, Inc. as the team’s managing general partner. Among their specific complaints, the McGahs alleged that Davis failed to provide them with detailed financial information previously provided to Ed and E.J. McGah. The Raiders countered that—under the terms of the partnership agreement as amended in 1972—upon the death of the elder McGah in 1983, his general partner interest converted to that of a limited partner. The team continued to provide the financial information to the younger McGah as a courtesy, though it was under no obligation to do so.[58]
The majority of the lawsuit was dismissed in April 2004, when an Alameda County Superior Court judge ruled that the case lacked merit since none of the other partners took part in the lawsuit.[59] In October 2005, the lawsuit was settled out of court. The terms of the settlement are confidential, but it was reported that under its terms Davis purchased the McGah family’s interest in the Raiders (approximately 31 percent), and which gave him for the first time owns a majority interest for a limited time, speculated to be approximately 67 percent of the team. As a result of the settlement, confidential details concerning Al Davis and the ownership of the Raiders were not released to the public.[60] His ownership share went down to 47% when he sold 20% of the team to Wall Street investors [57]
Recently, Davis has been attempting to sell the 31 percent ownership stake in the team he obtained from the McGah family. He has been unsuccessful in this effort, reportedly because the sale would not give the purchaser any control of the Raiders, even in the event of Davis’s death. Full control of the team will be assumed by Davis’s wife, Carol, upon his death.[61]
January 22nd, 2010 at 9:33 am
That’s right folks. If Big Al dies, Carol Davis takes over! Would she do a better job?

==================================================
Exactly what I’ve been saying. And, if you remember, there were some fans from this very blog that were extremely critical of Kiffin for that approach. Those fans now see the result of the aggressive approach. You look at Sanchez, Ben in Pittsburgh, these guys were groomed slowly and the offense wasn’t thrown on their shoulders.
I’ve been hard on Russell and I feel he’s deserved it for his poor work ethic and attitude. He needs to grow up. But the one thing he may deserve a little slack in is how he was thrown to the fire this year. Handled poorly and he wasn’t ready.
Now who’s fault is that? It’s either Cable or Davis. I tend to lean toward Davis due to some of the things he said in his projector meeting. Seemed to imply that he wanted Russell slinging it. But then again, Cable could have lobbied to Davis. But he didn’t have enough of a backbone to convince Davis that Russell wasn’t ready. That or Cable truly thought Russell could handle it.

I think, also, that there comes a point when you simply have to show the ability to throw the ball with some consistency to win in the NFL, long term.
Cable and Al can both be blamed for Russell’s poor play to an extent.
And rightfully so.
But, at some point (even Sanchez as an example), when your team needs you to hit an open receiver – damn! You have to hit that open receiver!!!
So again – let’s hope some good will come out of Russell’s mental beat-down.

What do you guys really think of Chris Johnson?
I tend to think he’s an excellent corner (better than most in the league).
But, he’s got 2 things working against him:
1. He’s playing opposite the dude nobody throws to.
2. He plays man-to-man – that’s something that most corners in the league can’t even do.
With that being said, can we do better there?
I would think that if we fix the NT & ML problem we have, that our secondary will be plenty legit enough to win.

Ravens’ Jackson interviewing for head job in Oakland
By Aaron Wilson, Times Staff Writer Friday, January 22, 2010
OWINGS MILLS — Baltimore Ravens quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson hasn’t only been interviewed for the Oakland Raiders’ offensive coordinator position over the past few days.
Jackson is also meeting with the Raiders regarding the head-coaching position currently held by Tom Cable.
Jackson remained at the Raiders’ team headquarters Thursday night as his interview with team officials continued.
A former offensive coordinator with the Atlanta Falcons and the Washington Redskins, Jackson has been instrumental in the development of quarterback Joe Flacco. Jackson could either wind up as a potential replacement for Cable or operate as his offensive coordinator.
Jackson, 45, has previously worked on the West Coast with previous stints at USC, Cal-Berkeley and Cal-State Fullerton. He hasn’t been a head coach previously.
Raiders owner Al Davis is hoping to revive the career of quarterback bust JaMarcus Russell. Cable benched Russell this past season, and the team finished 5-11 overall.
The Raiders have yet to say anything publicly regarding their coaching situation other than denying interviews have taken place with Jim Fassel and Marc Trestman.
Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh, the brother of Ravens coach John Harbaugh, had been rumored to have spoken with the Raiders regarding Cable’s job. However, his agent, Jack Bechta, has denied that speculation.

——————————–
Al forced cable to start jamarcus as he did with kiffen. The reason the players respect tom so much is because he stood up to al and sat jamarcus anyway knowing jamarcus is als guy. And what point does it make to keep running when its not working??? Defenses stacked the box because they knew jamarcus couldn’t handle pressure and to also stop the run… Its not cable. With grads and frye starting we looked like a totally different team thats how bad jamarcus is. if you’re going to blame somebody blame the person who deserves it which is al for not allowing ccable to bench jamarcus alot sooner.(;

If the meetings with Jackson really have gone on for 3+ days, that can only mean either 1) Jackson is being interviewed for the HC position, or 2) brining in Jackson to interview for the OC spot was Cable’s idea and Al is giving Cable time, along with Jackson, to try and convince him that a combination of Cable and Jackson can get the job dones, or 3) Al is just fuking with us all.

So in the scenario with Jackson as OC, is Hackett retained as QB coach?

Big mouth and fat ass is all he is.
………….
Actually, in 2006 Sapp had 10 sacks. This was the most by a DT in the NFL that year. He got no mention for the Pro Bowl because the Raiders record was so bad.
The 10 sacks was the most since 2000 when he got 16.5 in Tampa and was the 4th best total of his career.
2002 when Tampa won the Trophy, he had 40 tackles and 7.5 sacks.
In 2006 he had 32 tackles and 10 sacks.

Raiders are his meal ticket. He used to be pretty funny to listen to. I remember how the local media members were excited when he traded for him because of all the sound bites he’d provide. He seemed to lose that when he came over. Losing a couple of steps and playing on a bad team didn’t help, I’m sure.
I think it just sells, at this point, to talk about the Raiders. He has no other material.

We all know the Pittsburgh game, and the Redskins game was the second most points we scored in the first half this year (13 in Denver, 10 at home against SD and Wash).

Offensively, the Bengals game was horrendous. Mostly becasue we spent all game trying to prove it was Russell not DHB and forced the ball to him. There was no running game at all, and Grads had 100 yds pasing at the 58 minute mark.
Pittsburgh game? We had 6 pts going into the 4th qtr! It was some really magical stuff happening for Grads in that 4th qtr, lol. U know what I’m talking about, so let’s just leave it at that.
Washington game? We had 2 big plays to McFadden against Landry. Once Washington adjusted a corner to McFadden, the game was over.

He is a heckuva football coach and coached some solid D-Lines in here in Oakland when of course guess who was coach? Jon Gruden of course and coached good D-Lines with the G-Men.
Wasn’t his fault the new D-Coordinator in NY who replaced Spagnuolo sucked.
Interesting how old man Al can re hire a former coach like Waufle but not a former great Raiders head coach like Gruden who turned the franchise and team around huh?

In continuing to unearth reasons for Waufle’s departure from the Giants (in addition to his annual gripes about a lack of money and respect from the team), I’ve picked up on the sound of rumblings the Giants believed he simply got too close to his players and wasn’t hard enough on them. This explains why the players loved him, of course, but also why he’d be nudged out the door while the rest of the staff has remained intact.
Think about it: in the preseason Umenyiora left a team meeting after being criticized by defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan for a game in which he graded out well. Who provided those grades? Waufle.

The point being is we never had those moments, even the far and far between ones, in a couple years.
You mock the 10 points at the half against Washington, but where would this team be if we scored 20 points a game?
And as far as Pitt game goes, the game is 4 quarters. Not trying to sound like a smart-azz, but if this team had an offense that can get rolling like that one quarter every game, we would be set!!!

LOL, Chris johnson is pathetic, he couldnt get a backup job with any of the playoff teams, he might be okay to be a nickel or dime
———————–
You’re crazy. Chris Johnson is one of the better No. 2 CBs in the league.
- 13th in the NFL in passes defensed with 21 (Huff in his breakout season was 2nd on the team with 17).
- 68 tackles was 2nd among the Raiders secondary (behind Branch).
- 3 INTs tied for team lead (with Huff).
- Covers the other team’s star WRs as much or more than Nnamdi since they each just stick to their own sides of the field.
- Speaking of coverage, what do Vincent Jackson, Dwayne Bowe (twice), Brandon Marshall (twice), Andre Johnson, Steve Smith (NYG), DeSean Jackson, Braylon Edwards, Chad Ochocino, Hines Ward, Santana Moss and Derrick Mason have in common? They were all held under 100 yards receiving by CJ and the Raiders this season. As a matter of fact, it wasn’t until Week 8 in the 2nd SD game that a WR went over 100 yards on us when Jackson had 103. Santonio Holmes and Miles Austin were the only other two to go over 100 yards receiving in a game against us.
Of the remaining playoff teams, outside of Revis and Antoine Winfield, there may be a corner or two in CJ’s class, but none are better.
Yet you insist that CJ is a major liability for this team?
Get a clue dude.

Chris,
Your WR statistic isn’t all that surprising since WRs don’t have to get 100 yards against us because our run D is horrible. Remember back in 2006 when our secondary was ranked so high because teams never threw against us, and then in 2007 we were all shocked at how bad our pass coverage was once Kiffin had us competing in games through the 4th quarter…

According to rotoworld the Cardinals are “earnestly” shopping WR Anquan Boldin. Apperently Arizona was offered a 3rd round pick and “a player” last year for Boldin and it wasn’t enough. This year with the emergence of Doucett and Breaston his void will be adaquatley filled for cheaper. Arizona would now be satisfied with that compansation. (3rd & player)
Any thoughts on The Raiders possibly working something out? God knows we could use the presence of an established veteran wideout. They can have our 3rd round pick and Kirk Morrison as far as I’m concerned. We all know big Al loves the big names, and the headlines.

JLH was right up there on the biggest disappointments of 2009 list for the Raiders, along with Russell, McFadden, DHB and Chris Johnson.
January 22nd, 2010 at 11:17 am
Why would they be so kind as to take Javon off of our hands?

Walker was healthy last year. just in Al or Tom’s doghouse. he already took a paycut last offseason.
plus a 2nd rounder is more enticing than a 3rd, no?
they lose a WR and gain a WR …
surely AZ wouldn’t expect Javon to produce in Oakland if he never sniffed the field

Purdy: Stanford’s Jim Harbaugh, Oakland Raiders wouldn’t be a good pairing
By Mark Purdy
Mercury News Columnist

When it comes to the process of hiring a football coach, no one creates confusion like the Raiders. Unless it’s Jim Harbaugh, the Stanford coach.
And if you combine those two chemical elements . . . well, you have the football gossip equivalent of dropping a Mento into a one-liter soda bottle.
Thus, this week.
As the fate of Raiders head coach Tom Cable remains up in the air, one report says team owner Al Davis has asked Harbaugh to replace Cable. Harbaugh has supposedly refused the offer. The Raiders deny the offer was made. Harbaugh is out recruiting. His agent calls the rumors bunk but says that Davis and Harbaugh have a “very special relationship.” The world trembles.
Chill out, citizens. Everything does point to Cable soon being gone from the Raiders. And someone else will be taking his place, obviously. But I am 99.9 percent certain that these five words will never appear alongside each other in the same sentence: Raiders head coach Jim Harbaugh.
I have reasons for believing this. One of the reasons dates to 2003. That football season, Harbaugh was the Raiders’ quarterback coach, working under Bill Callahan.
It was a Monday night. The Raiders were losing by three touchdowns at Denver. In the waning moments of the fourth quarter, Raiders backup quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo was on the field, performing mop-up duty. Tuisasosopo threw a ball into the end zone. The pass was intercepted. Touchback. The Broncos ran out the clock. Game over. Broncos win, 31-10.
Minutes later, the locker room door opened. Journalists entered. To our left, the players were silently dressing at their lockers. But to our right, Harbaugh was standing between Al Davis and a wall. Neither the wall nor Davis was budging. Davis was inches away from Harbaugh’s face, angry about the Tuisasosopo interception.
“I thought you told me that you were teaching him how to throw that pass over the linebacker’s head!” Davis said, although I am leaving out the profane adjectives between some of those words. Davis kept up this lecture for quite a while, with impressive saltiness.
And what was Harbaugh’s response? Well, he couldn’t go anywhere. So he just kept repeating: “Yes, Mr. Davis. Yes, Mr. Davis. Yes, Mr. Davis.”
As anyone who spends time around the Raiders knows, this is the price paid by coaches when they work for Davis. He spares none of them. They know this when they sign up. They’re all grown ups. I didn’t stand and gawk. I took note of the scene and then turned to the lockers and went about my work.
But I do remember thinking to myself at the time: Of all the plays to get mad at an assistant coach about, in a three touchdown loss . . . I wonder how long Harbaugh wants to keep working here?
A few months later, the issue was moot. Callahan was fired. Harbaugh left the Raiders and became head coach at the University of San Diego. He was very successful. Stanford hired him. He excavated the program out of misery and took the Cardinal to a bowl game in 2009. He is mentioned for just about every job opening that comes up, in college or the NFL.
And here we are.
Would Harbaugh ever take an NFL job? Yes, the right one. Eventually. I can’t believe it would be the Raiders, however. Harbaugh has seen how the sausage is made in Oakland. He respects Davis, who gave Harbaugh his first pro coaching job. For this, Harbaugh will always be grateful.
But there is a big leap between respect, appreciation and accepting a head coaching paycheck from Davis. Shortly after Harbaugh took the Stanford job, I mentioned that night in Denver to him. Did Harbaugh remember it? Yes, he remembered. I asked him to elaborate. He just smiled and shrugged. He didn’t want to go there.
Last summer during Stanford preseason drills, though, I was intrigued when Harbaugh struck up a conversation and asked if I had been to the Raiders’ training camp. I didn’t read too much into it. But I noted it.
My impression: Harbaugh and Davis do talk on the phone. Of course they do. Davis loves talking football. So does Harbaugh. I’m sure they enjoy picking each other’s brains about the game and various players. A coach can have an entirely different sort of rapport and connection with Davis when he isn’t the boss.
That relationship, however, does not mean that Harbaugh is eager to work for Davis again. It also does not mean he will be at Stanford forever. Harbaugh has enough confidence and ego to believe he will have a perfect NFL opportunity one day.
Right now, would anyone describe the Raiders as perfect?
January 22nd, 2010 at 11:25 am
Not sure what happens if we cut walker, In the same sentence who cares? Between him and Nick Miller last year we could of possibly had more depth at O-line or anywhere for that matter. what a waste.
January 22nd, 2010 at 11:26 am
Javon Walker is due to make $2.6 million this year & $3.2 million next year
pretty cheap if he can stay healthy and get out of the doghouse.
not likely with Cable in charge!
January 22nd, 2010 at 11:28 am
RR-like I said what a waste.
January 22nd, 2010 at 11:29 am
Didn’t Walker re-structure his contract to be more cap-friendly in exchange for having last year’s and this years salaries guaranteed at $4.5 million per?
I guess Al would rather keep the useless POS on the Roster than cut him and still have to pay him $4.5 million.
I think he should have been cut and then maybe a player that could contribute might be put on the roster? Same with Nick Miller? Maybe a decent blocking FB for instance? Or maybe a guard?
Call me crazy!

Our coaches should play the best WRs, right now, Murphy and Schilens.
Higgins can be a good slot WR, he should be running shrt crossing routes all the game.
DHB should have a Meachem or Devery Henderson role in NO, occasional deep threat (if he learns how to catch a football, if not he will have a Troy Williamson role with MIN)

Sure, if he is used to shine Al’s shoes. JK!
The knock on DMAC when drafted was that he went down easily and fumbled too much. Little did the experts know that both issues would worsen considerably in the pros.
He must give way to Bush for RB carries. Theoretically he could be used to catch passes or run back kicks, but I fear his fumbling would only hurt us there too.
I say trade the bust before his value drops even more.

I cant agree.
LBs are the main problem when it comes to stop the run. We have many holes to cut both starting DTs.
The Raiders are 6th in the NFL in tackles for loss by the Defensive Line, the problem is when the RB gets 5 yards and the LBs have to make the tackle they are blocked, out of position or just fail to make a tackle, so the gain can be very long.
Get ROLANDO McCLAIN and keep the DL, instead of cutting both DTs and still have a need at ILB.
January 22nd, 2010 at 11:55 am
Even after his bad rookie year I had hope for JLH, then in 2008 he really started to make plays.
But at that time his IQ was around 80…after Russell left him hanging out to dry a few times, his IQ is now around 65….and that is too low…even for the Raiders.

I like Losman over Frye and we should not carry 4 QBs IMO. I like the idea of Kelly or Warren playing next to a legit NT (the one we finally draft or sign this year right? lol), and I am not sure which one would make the better three tech DT next to our new NT.

JLH averages 46 yards/game in the last 9 games he started at WR in 2008 and 2009.

Well, I just don’t know. It seems to me that far too many times our LBs are getting blocked because our DTs don’t always demand a double team in running situations and therefore someone is left clear to engage the LBs. I think Morrison is too weak and can’t shed block well enough for a MLB, but I also believe that we need a true NT to occupy the guard and center on running plays which should free up our MLB to make more plays near the LOS or in the backfield.
Even Ray Lewis dropped off until the Ravens finally got another beast NT, Haloti Ngata.
Like I said to Rockstar, I think Warren and Kelly make fine 3 tech DTs, we just need that NT next to them…and that will help our MLB…but we do need a stronger MLB anyhow. My preference is to get both a NT and a new MLB….but I would replace the NT first.
Just the way I see it.

Sorry to be OT, guys, but I’m watching Mark McGuire on ESPN right now, and the press really seems to be turning the corner and redeeming him. Bonds should fess up now, as well. And, it will be interesting to see if the press shows the same consideration for Barry. Marion Jones, as well. Or has Marion already come clean about it? I know she’s done time, don’t know if she’s ever actually admitted doing it. McGuire really seems to be on the “he made a mistake, let’s move on” status with the press right now. Interesting to see if Barry and Marion would get the same redemption.

Dakota,
I agree with you, I also think we need a NT. Kelly and Warren disrupt tha backfield at times and create pressure in passing situations at times but they cant occupie 2 blocker, I know. Also Morrison should be outside,Howard is weak in run defense and Scott is still learning.
I m sure we need a NT, but getting rid of our 2 starting DTs only creates another big hole. If we could get McClain or Terrence Cody it would be great, those 2 were the most important piezes in the #1 run defense in College.

Did I imagine it, or did JLH seem like he lost his cool? He seemed way to skittish last year…I don’t know if you can fix a head case like that.
Ask Andrew Walter.
That would be the only reason I would cut him…if he somehow regains his confidence then great keep him….but he seems cracked too me.

Morrison making the Pro Bowl just before a contract year bodes well for him.
he’s led the team in tackles for 4 straight seasons. over 100 tackles in all 5 years with Oakland
highly respected player around the league.

Morrison to the Pro Bowl, is that true? Link?

El Tato,
I certainly wouldn’t want both Kelly and Warren gone, that is why I said maybe cut them…we have to keep at least one of them, and if they are both willing to re-negotiate, I would love to see them rotate at the 3 tech spot. But I like Desmond Bryant too….so one of them should get cut if they are not willing to take a pay cut and we get a NT.

Is there any way Trevor Scott could play MLB?
Is he too tall at 6′5″?

Dakota,
we agree we need a REAL NT. I hope we get one this offseaon, that would make every LB and S look better.

It’s hilarious how a little weather in SoCal is breaking national news on CNN, etc.
When I lived there I remember they sprayed malathion from helicopters…how about some testosterone next time?

a true disaster is sending 250,000 soldiers/military personnel into the cauldron/quagmire of Central Asia and paying one trillion dollars to do so.
while the Raiders coaching carousel my be irksome and untidy it is not disastrous.

***************************************
Bonds went get the same treatment no matter what, and it pisses me off. They scapegoated that guy, and did all they could to slander him to pieces, when he was no different than 25% of the other players in the league, except he was better.
I am probably one of the world’s biggest Barry fans. Have his bobble-head at my desk, and a framed picture of him hitting #70 in the office, and when my cousin wrote a book on him, I got to meet him in Spring Training one year a couple of times.
Yup I am an Al Davis and Barry Bonds apologist. I am a debate/argument waiting to happen.
