Raiders make Waufle hiring official

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, January 22nd, 2010 at 6:38 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The following press release was issued tonight by the Raiders:

The Oakland Raiders are pleased to announce that Mike Waufle will rejoin the Raiders as the Defensive Line Coach. Mike has an outstanding record of success as a defensive line coach and has participated in Super Bowls with the Raiders and Giants. New York’s Super Bowl victory over New England featured dominating defensive line play. Mike is thrilled with the opportunity to rejoin the Raiders. He and Coach Cable spent six years together at the University of California where they enjoyed working together.

So while they’ve yet to make it clear whether Cable will be the head coach, they at least brought him some company until Al Davis makes up his mind.

The fact they called him Coach Cable and not Tom Cable tells me he is staying.

  3. Midwest Fan Says:

Jackson as O-coordinator. Marshall stays as D-coordinator. Cable gets one more year.

  4. La Milicia Negra Says:

    Great news

  5. fletcher Says:

One would think if Cable is at the Senior Bowl practices on Monday he is not getting fired. Hopefully we get an OC that can call plays… Wonder if Hanson will be in Alabama next week.

  6. jhill Says:

    Coach Cable?

    LMFAO!

Wonder what ESPN has to say about that?

  7. vegas raider Says:

Kiffin was a dead man walking in Mobile that one year, and he had to coach the game.

What a disgrace that was. A great opportunity to coach and get the best view of all the young talent, and Al is playing mind games with his own staff, being extremely counterproductive.

  8. 504 Raider Says:

Yep that’s how I read it. Cable got another year. Or at least an audition until the bye week.

  9. raidermarty Says:

Yeah I think it’s a lock Cable will be back. I guess Al is trying to keep a little continuity going. personally I hate the thought of “starting over” with a different coach every other year. He definitely better show us something though, or he will be ripped a new one by RAIDER NATION

  10. jhill Says:

I didn’t think Cable would be too mad at the guy who got him the job to not want to coach him.

  11. buckeyeraider Says:

This press release makes it look like Cable is staying. Wauffle worked with him at Cal. I believe Jerry’s earlier post mentioned Hue Jackson did as well. From what I remember, Jackson was pretty popular in Cincinnati. He was credited with helping develop Chad Johnson and TJ Whosyourmama. Supposed to be an intense, fiery individual. Sorry Raider O, looks like the fat monkey is staying.

  12. 504 Raider Says:

Or another possibility is Al brings in a Head Coach and Coach Cable and Coach Waufle are in charge of the trenches.

  13. jhill Says:

We should trade Gasoft for Bosh, and Whynum to NJ for Lopez!

    Yep R8eray,

An announcement is coming soon. We cracked the code.

    LMAO!

  17. Raiders4eve Says:

I am starting to believe that Cable would be retained and Jackson would be our OC coach. It makes all sense with the hiring of Waufle whom Cable is familiar with. I just dont see a new coach coming in and working with a staff he hadn’t picked. Cable stays but relinquishes his play calling duty, maybe he starts focusing on the OL. I would like AL to hire Sherman Smith as our RB coach maybe he can resuurect DMAC career. Also AL should look into hiring Tim Brown as our Wide Receiver coach, Tim is already tutoring young wide receivers who declared for the draft and can help DHB, Murphy, N Miller and Schillens in routing running but I doubt he can teach DHB how to catch the ball, you either got it or not.

  18. KoolKell Says:

I guess Waufle knows physical 4 man line defense.

I wonder how Davis is feeling about the ZBS right now.

  19. raidermarty Says:

I like the Tim Brown idea too- he would be perfect to coach the wr’s

  20. Dude Says:

Newsflash- Hugh Jackson has NOT been hired. For f sakes you all act as if the guy already signed on the dotted line.

    JHill,
Gasoft??? What were you saying about the guy a 5 months ago as he was helping the Show win a title? And you jump on guys on here for bashing Russell.

  21. Richochet Says:

Interesting that Raiders acknowledged interviewing Hue, but made a point of saying Cable wasn’t there.

Yeah, because that’s just what happens when you have faith in a HC..you exclude him from interviews with his prospective staff *roll eyes*

  22. Dude Says:

Y would Tim Brown be perfect to coach WRs? Hes never coached in his life.

As much as I hate the Lakers, that fkn Kobe is from another planet sometimes. He’s just playing with guys, night in and night out.

I used to hate on Peyton and Kobe a lot. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to appreciate.

  27. raidermarty Says:

Well in hearing him talk about the RAIDERS in that sirius interview he seemed to have a good perspective on the state of the RAIDERS and he is immensely qualified plus I think he would enjoy reaching out to the youth to pass along his vast knowledge. Tim Brown was one of the best!!!!!!!

  28. 504 Raider Says:

I still don’t like Kobe. I’m an Iverson guy but he’s on the way out.

  29. Raiders4eve Says:

I guess with Waufle hiring and Marshal running the defense, the idea of Raiders D switching to 3-4 is out of the question. In my opinion, our personal is fit for 3-4 defense more than 4-3. All we need is NT maybe draft McClain and move up to snatch Cody and we could to go. Ellis, Cody, Seymour as our DL Howard and Scott as our OLB, Morrison and McClain as our MLB. The front seven would be set. With this personal, we could confuse opponents offense and hide blitzes with this defense. As Pat Kirwan explained: “When 3-4 teams rush both outside linebackers in a double-outside blitz — especially when the inside linebackers threaten blitz to hold the guards — at least one gets to rush against a running back, and that’s a win for the defense.

Keep in mind that the 3-4 has one less player in a three-point stance than the 4-3 defense, and that might be the key to why the flexible 3-4 has a better chance of succeeding than the 4-3 in the modern game.”

In my opinion, the 3-4 defense with the front seven I mentioned is more equipped to stop the run vs 4-3 we been doing for years now. Seymour is better player in 3-4 defense along with Trevor Scott who runs a 4.5 and is clear mismatch to any LT if he plays 3-4. We could also blitz with Branch and Huff more under this coverage rather than 4-3. All dreams I know since we going to be stuck with man to man 4-3 defense.

  30. vegas raider Says:

Al should hire Jackson as well to call the plays. Al loves his local guys, and Hugh played at UOP and coached in Berkely.

  31. Raiders4eve Says:

    Dude

Tim Brown is been coaching young receivers privately. He is capable of doing this job better then Sanjay Lal who coached high school students, I would take Tim over this idiot. Period.

  45. Raiders4eve Says:

    Dude

Who claimed Chaz is the second coming of Randy Moss? Randy Moss is first ballot HOF, whats Chaz? a seventh rounder lucky to be in a team, Murphy progressed? Raiders are the sixth in passes dropped with 36, Murphy has 9 drops, his percentage catching the ball is 36%. You want more stats?

Come on Dude, I know JR is responsible for most of it but our Wide Receiver is one of the last in the league and we route running is terrible.

  46. Rayda23059 Says:

Al will hold onto Cable just to spite Lombardi

  47. buckeyeraider Says:

    Dude,
504 is right. Although really he could have stopped at DHB. When the seventh overall pick in the draft didn’t produce, or even seem to progress, his wr coach is going to take some heat. Whether or not it’s fair to blame DHB’s struggles on Lal, who knows. Most on here agree he shouldn’t have been the pick in the first place. But if DHB had even an average rookie season, nobody would have known or probably cared who Sanjay Lal was, he would have just been another anonymous assistant coach.

  48. Raiders4eve Says:

    buckeyeraider

Its not even about DHB, its the whole Wide Receiving crew not knowing their routes or dropping the ball. Given that both Murphy and DHB have combined 15 drops among them with Murphy leading the way with 9 and DHB 6 I believe, the rest of the team has 21 drops along with the whole confusion. Schillens is the only consistent WRs we got with 55% of the passes targeted towards him caught and only 2 drops. But he only played 8 games.

  49. oo00tt00oo Says:

i woulnt jump to assumptions cable is still IN….other than the fact we know davis doesnt like to pay anyone for nothing….keep in mind wauffle was with the raiders the same time as harbaugh and trestman were…and harbaugh has the added connection to jackson through his bro…..

heres a flyer….davis moves cable UP to assistant GM…gets the perfect YES man to help him with the organization crap he cant do anymore

  51. Raiders4eve Says:

Does it put pressure on you because they used first round pick on receiver?

Lal: Not for me personally. I just take it as I’m privileged to have this job. I told Coach Cable and Coach Davis that ‘You’ve given me my dream job and I will coach every day with that attitude.’ It’s like a gift to me to have these young guys to mold.

This guy doesnt even know his owner and called him coach Davis, do you think he knows how to coach wide receivers?

  52. buckeyeraider Says:

My God. Where was that picture taken? Is that the Raiders state of the art audio/video dept. Is that an overhead projector behind him?

  53. Raiders4eve Says:

    Lol

Who cares, Sanjay Lal is an idiot and needs to be fired. We cant run routes, cant catch the ball and brought in an idiot to teach DHB how to catch. Please AL, hire Tim Brown he would teach them better then this clown.

  55. Raiders4eve Says:

Btw, what happens if supplemental revenue sharing is dropped this off season, AL will lose more money and will need new business partner to resign Seymour and Jano. NFLPA are already in legal battle for teams like the Raiders cause they know without that money some teams might not even have enough money in FA.

    http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/01/22/hearing-on-supplemental-revenue-sharing-issue-coming-next-week/

  56. 24 Says:

The Waufle hire is a good one. We have much more talent on the defensive line it seems with Shaunessey and Seymour. Scott was playing Weak Side Linebacker so who knows what happens there. Can Waufle do something about our DT’s or find someone good enough for the middle? I would guess William Joseph is already in the Waufle doghouse as he didn’t make it with the Giants while Waufle was there so I wouldn’t expect much from that unless hes improved. I wish we could get one of those top 2 DT’s out of the draft, heres hoping we trade up to the #1 or #2 spot.

As far as the interest in Hue Jackson, I’m just happy to hear that we’re going after someone who looks to be a good hire. I need to do some research because I don’t remember if hes had play calling experience in the past and if he has, the alarming part would be the reason he didn’t stay on as an offensive coordinator. I should know more but I haven’t paid as much attention as I used to…I’m starting to slip.

With any other franchise in sports, this woul be preposterous to suggest, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Al Davis is keeping Cable JUST BECAUSE ESPN was saying that he would be fired.

Evidence suggests that Al Davis cares more about being “right” in meaningless spats with the media, and protecting his fading image and legacy, than he does about winning. It kills him to have anybody get the best of him, and people thinking they know what he’s going to do, so has to do the opposite, just so he can “win” some petty mind game that nobody cares about except him. What Mr. Davis doesn’t realize, is that the number one way to show everybody that he’s still “got it” is by WINNING FOOTBALL GAMES. That’s it! That’s all he’s got to do. Al wants respect? WIN! You want the media to stop calling your treasured organization a laughingstock? WIN! THAT’S IT!

Mr. Davis, quit worrying about what everybody says about you and your organization being a joke and prove them wrong by concentrating less on how you are perceived by the media, and on WINNING GAMES.

Why is that so hard to understand?

I’m now starting to think the only reason he drafted Heyward-Bey is because everyone thought he should draft someone else.

With anyone else on the planet, would be ludicrous.
    But it’s Al.
And Al LOVES to play the little head games, and actually thinks he’s outsmarting everyone.
And to win HIS WAY..with HIS PICKS..not the general consensus picks, because, as you stated, he’s doing what’s “expected of him”..what others felt should be done.

I can just see him on the Bey pick “Boy..he’s going to go deep the very first play…TD RAAAAAIIIIIDERRRRRS!..and I’m going to rub it in all their faces. Ha..who needs that Crabtree guy..I’m Al.

Al Davis is surely gauging interest from some HC candidates on the down low, so when they all tell him to “Get f’d” he can come out and act as if it was Cable the whole time and it was all media speculation that Cable wouldnt be back. Its typical Al Davis.

I don’t think any of this speculation is going to end until after the Super Bowl. First Al needs to see who the MVP of the Super Bowl is so he can sign him to a huge contract. Then he needs to interview 4 or 5 more assistants to gauge any interest they may have of becoming the next Raiders (Pinata) coach.. I think it’s going to go well over 35 days before we really know… Fun huh?

  184. djohnnyg Says:

It seems that there are 3 camps in regard to the opinion on Al Davis:

1- The camp that believes Al Davis is basically a god; these feel that Al can basically do no wrong, and this 7 year rash of losing, is due more to ‘bad luck’ than anything else. They see Al and the Raider shield as two inseperable entities and still regard Al as a genius who will turn this around, and is still a genius.

2-The camp that believe Al is basically Satan in plastic pants. They believe that any success the Raiders have ever had is due more to ‘good luck’ in hring people like Ron Wolf, and others who made the right decisions during critical periods in Raider history. These believe that the Raiders achieved success DESPITE Al Davis, NOT because of him. These believe that Al screwed over Wayne Valley, and regard Mr. Davis as nothing more than a slickster who got ‘lucky’ more than anything else. These ones feel Al has most certainly gone senile and is not possessed of any football management ability whatsoever, and blame him solely for the Raider failures of the last seven years.

3- This camp believes that Al Davis deserves respect for what he did in the past to create the Raider organization’s success, and give him much credit for achieving 3 Lombardi trophies and 5 Super Bowl appearances. They respect Al and give him credit for being an ‘innovator’ and one of the key figures in making the NFL what it is today. They also feel that those days are in the past and that something has changed, and that Al Davis has since ‘lost’ whatever ability he had to create and maintain a successful professional football organization. They feel that Al is now the problem, rather than solution, but they respect his past accomplishments. They do not regard him as a ‘genius’ any longer and just wish he would go away and allow people that know what they are doing run the show. These ones perhaps feel sad that a man who accomplished so much in his career is destroying the legacy of success and accomplishment he achieved and that each day he sits in charge of the Oakland Raiders, is another day that erodes his past success and puts the Raiders ever further down the abyss of football and organizational failure.

Davis could be simply messing with the media
Posted by Mike Florio on January 23, 2010 12:01 PM ET
There’s a lingering sense that Raiders owner Al Davis truly hasn’t decided whether to keep coach Tom Cable — and that Davis is talking to other coaches in the hopes of determining whether he might be able to finagle an upgrade.

But there’s now a growing sense in some media circles that Davis is simply trying to mess with the media.

And the media seems to be figuring it out. The wave of stories regarding the presumption that Cable will be fired has yielded to a wave of stories regarding the presumption that Cable will return.

It appears that Davis has indeed spoken with Marc Trestman and Jim Harbaugh, but not about replacing Cable. Though it’s possible that, through these conversations, Davis was trying to get a feel for whether guys like Trestman or Harbaugh might be a good fit for the job, there has yet to be any hard evidence to suggest that Cable is in trouble.

Then again, if Davis is indeed trying to determine whether a better option at head coach is available, it’s important to keep that effort tightly under wraps (via “vociferous” denials), in the event that Davis ultimately decides to stick with the devil that he knows.

But the addition of defensive line coach Mike Waufle, who worked with Cable at Cal in 1996, and the possible arrival of Hue Jackson, who was on that same staff, suggests that Cable is likely to stay.

Then there’s the fact that the hiring of assistant coaches will make the job even less attractive to head-coaching candidates with other options, since head coaches typically like to hire their own guys.

Though nothing can be ruled out (after all, we’re talking about the Raiders), it not only looks like Cable is safe — it also looks like he never was in trouble.

    I agree!

  203. r8eray Says:

With taht being said…let’s give the Cable man one more year. Raider O, 5-11 is not a good record but give him the benifit of the doubt. I feel we are much closer on having a good Defense than we are on offense. I think after we fix the Defense, it should be able to help our young developing offense that lacks leadership and exp.

  236. Raider O Says:

    Yes!! Do you know why?

i don’t know if Hue Jackson is going to make a good head coach… but i think a lot of us agree that Cable does not make a good head coach… so if Cable offers us a recognizable 2 (on a scale of 1 – 10) head coach capability… and from that we can see that virtually anyone can probably do better… well… there ya go… Hue Jackson it is…

    4- OG

-Move Seymour inside so we can get more out of him than just 4 sacks.
-Cut Warren, ST player Euk who makes 1.5 mil, Green, Cooper, Both FBs, WR Walker, and Fargas.
    -restructure TK and Huffs contracts.
    -sign TH
-sign Kirk if he gives us the home town discount.

We need a play caller. Not anybody substantially great. Just somebody that can call plays. It can still be Cable’s offense, but it enables him to spend more time with his offensive line. Gruden brought us 2 straight division titles. Cable takes a 5-11 team to 5-11. But Al’s not sure. Has to think about it. Didn’t have to think about Gruden. He had to go. Offense was so boring.

    ^^^^^^^^^
Yep! The old weirdo old man Al loves does it again.

He has no problem shipping out a coach like Gruden who turned the franchise and team around and is too stubborn or stupid to rehire him when he is available now again to make up for his mistake by bringing him back.

But then when it comes to a good coach like Waufle (who was on Grudens staff) he has no problem hiring him back?

It was obvious at the end of the ‘01 season that Gruden was going to go. With Cable, it’s a tough call. Al has to think about it. Gruden had just got us our second division title and what should have been our second straight AFC championship appearance if not for a horrible officiating call, and Al’s mind was made up. Gruden’s gone. Meanwhile, Cable takes us from 5-11 to 5-11, and Al is putting a think tank together to figure out if he should keep him.

Davis could be simply messing with the media
Posted by Mike Florio on January 23, 2010 12:01 PM ET

    ………………..

No, he’s not. Davis is just confused and doesn’t know what he’s doing.

    Let’s work with the facts.

The Raiders have not improved one game from last season, and Davis has never kept a coach after a second consecutive losing season.

Several coaches have reportedly been sought by the Raiders for the head coaching job. Despite the Raiders’ denial, in the past when the Raiders have denied such events they’ve turned out to be true.

There has hardly been any interest in this by the national media. Sure, the local media pays attention because they cover the Raiders on a routine basis. ESPN gives about 3 seconds to it per hour. “Rumors Cable will be fired, nothing happening yet”. That’s it. No expert analysis, no interviews…NO INTEREST! So if Davis is just doing this to get attention, it’s not working anyway. Remember, this web site you’re on right now is a local site, InsideBayArea, a web affiliation of the Oakland Tribune. So yes, Jerry’s interested. Jerry’s job is to be interested in the Raiders. It’s what he’s supposed to do. With all due respect to Jerry, his attention does not constitute overall media attention. Same goes for that comcast network. They cover the RAiders routinely, because Comcast has a local affiliate that covers bay area sports exclusively. It’s not the national media. They’re just doing their routine job, based on the assumptions I mentioned earlier. There may be a little extra attention on the NFL Network because the NFL Network exclusively covers, wala, the NFL! Duh! Of course they’re going to pounce on anything that reeks of a story. There is no national media interest in this. Very little on ESPN, and just about nothing on the big 3 networks or any of the country’s major newspapers, like the NY, LA Times, Chi Tribune, etc. So if gaining attention is what Al is hoping to accomplish with this, he might want to recalibrate his goals. Like, maybe focus on just building a winning team? I dunno…

  270. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

DKnight, the funny thing is, Ghost to the Post makes it sound as if the Raiders, with Davis alive and running the team, are better than the Clippers, Niners, and Detroit. The Niners were 8-8 this year, and have one of the best coaches in the league! I’ll take an owner who runs their team like the Niners over Al Davis, any day. Al Davis is as bad as it gets these days. And as far as him wanting to win? Give me a break. He wants to win power struggles with people in his building and grudges with former employees, and little else. The team’s results and his hesitation to just fire Cable and bring in a real coach are proof of it.

Funny you mention this. There is a feature article on Colts president Jim Irsay in this week’s SI.

Jim inherited the team from his dad, but is a football junkie, played as a LB on the SMU teams of the 80’s, is over 60 years old and squats over 600 pounds still, sits in on offensive and defensive game plans, was a scout for 20 years, and a general manager.

Based on what is Singletary one of the best coaches in the league? The local media? He took a team in the weakest of divisions to a .500 record. With the exception of having AZ’s number they beat nobody but losing teams. And even AZ was exposed as another team that fattened their record on weak teams and proved that they aren’t a true playoff team when facing the Saints last week.

There’s a lot of hype around “Punch them in the mouth” but I certainly didn’t see that. The offense is only as good as Gore is healthy and the defense only punched the weakest offenses in the league. Against good offenses at best they were throwing weak jabs.

So seriously, take Singletary’s reputation as a player aside and show me what he’s done as an HC to even be considered not in the bottom 10.

And, yes, the only smart thing the Niners have done in recent years is hire Singletary, while Davis hasn’t done one smart thing in recent years, at last not anything that improved his team. Hiring Gruden was the last thing Al did that actually brought results, and that was over a decade ago. The Niners hired Singletary just a couple of years ago. Once again. T Scott is NOT a full time down RDE. He proved in the 2nd half of last year when Marshall finally woke up and starting using him as a standup elephant OLB that’s where Scott belongs. He is far more effective being a stand up elephant OLB type 80% of the time and then playing as a down DE 20% of the time. He makes more plays as a stand up OLB type either as a stand up rusher, blitzer or dropping back into coverage.

I disagree. Putting Scott as a full time down RDE is would be a waste. If they want a full time RDE, they should draft one this year in Round 2 or with one of the two 3rd round picks. If they can get Morgan with that #8 pick….they should consider taking him to be the staring full time RDE.

  322. Zymurge Says:

RMR — what exactly has Singletary done that makes him amongst the best? Does he have to win despite an owner/GM that picks his talent, starters, and schemes? I don’t think so.

Good coach find ways to make their teams better than the sum of the parts and to sometimes beat teams better than they are. Cable managed to do that with the Raiders. Singletary failed to do that with the Whiners.

Singletary doesn’t bring anything of note to the table in terms of superior schemes, half time adjustments (in fact, his team lost several leads) or even decent clock management and timeout preservation. His whole claim to fame is the so-called smash mouth culture that he brings to the team based on his playing past but that the team has yet to personify.

My point is that any mediocre coach could take that team with the current set of personnel and schedule and play them to a .500 record. On the contrary, were Singletary coaching the Raiders, I doubt that he’d do any better than 5-11, and possibly worse. If anything, Cable should be lauded for what he was able to accomplish with one and a half hands tied behind his back.

1st Round: Bruce Campbell OT Maryland – big enough to have real power, athletic enough to play zone.

2nd Round: Jon Asamoah OG Illinois – should replace Carlisle at RG. Probably the best Guard in the draft.

3rd Round: John Estes OC Hawaii – smart, mean and very strong. Satele and Morris are just not good enough.

Once these three are secure, then we can go looking for value:

3rd Round: Toby Gerhart RB Stanford – TG will fall this far because he isn’t a flashy gamebreaker but his strength and stamina are perfect for the Raiders. Fargas is gone – nothing in the tank. Gerhart is a warrior who will get the hard yards.

Round 4: Pat Angerer ILB Iowa – Probably better value than McClain, Angerer is a genuine ILB and would anchor the middle of the Raiders defence.

Ignorant? Obviously you dont notice how the NFL splits carries with Running backs. That is the trend in the NFL Bo. Maybe you need to catch up. DMAC didnt turn the ball over since way early inthe season…….as usual you are reaching talking a bunch of BS

  346. Thec07 Says:

You need to use DMAC like NO uses reggie bush. DMAC is reggie bush with a little less swivel…. DMAC KR, PR, WR, Slot guy, RB on occasion, he is a swiss army knife and should be used as such…. thats why we need a real OCO

Oh well, Bob must’ve really boogied. Back to football. Put me in the draft Mclain in the first round camp. I like Capt. Kirk, just not in the middle. We need a thumper in there. Wanted Rey M. last year. Was impressed with what I sawe from Rolando Mclain. He looked instinctive in nat’l champ. game. Sniffed out a screen, and seemed to tackle with some pop. I don’t know what he’s listed at, but he looked big; thick in the lower body like he could take on some blocks, and clog some running lanes.

  404. SATANFEARS ALDAVIS Says:

  408. buckeyeraider Says:

That’s cool Bob. Seen Sabbath in various forms, Dio,Ian Gillen, Ozzy reunion, Aerosmith, Megadeth.Never seen UFO live. They were just in town about a month ago, at a little bar called Mcguffey’s house of draft. Wife even had a babysitter lined up. Didn’t go. Kinda kicken myself in the azz. Their live ‘79 album Strangers in the night is one of my all time faves. If I ever make my own personal pilgrimage to Mecca..the Oakland Alameda county coliseum, your tailgates sound like a helluva good time. Later Bob.

  409. texguy Says:

Jimmy Clausen is overrated. Much like Brady Quinn was coming out of ND. Career backup at best. He is not as good as Quinn was under the same offense, and Quinn is only slightly better than BRL.

  411. buckeyeraider Says:

I’m not sure which should be priority one and one-A. Fixing the offensive line, or the run defense. They both need addressed. Hopefully Al has all his tinkertoys at the skill positions now, and he can turn his attention in this draft/free agency to where games are won and lost, controlling the line of scrimmage. Mclain, or a top flight right tackle. Eight seems to high for Cody. A young DT is definitely needed to add to the rotation though.

check it out, dudes (and Brian the Genital) -

After weeks of speculation and deliberation, Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis has decided to retain Tom Cable as head coach for the 2010 season, a source close to the situation told ESPN on Saturday.

Cable will fulfill the final year of his contract with the Raiders, the source said.

When contacted, Raiders spokesman John Herrera did not confirm that Cable would remain coach for the 2010 season, saying only that, despite meetings into the night the past two days, no decision has been reached.

Cable had one year remaining on his contract. But after meeting with Cable again this week, Davis made a decision that will be popular among players by keeping his head coach in place, the source said.

Cable had widespread support throughout the players in the Raiders locker room.

But his return does not mean changes will not be made. Oakland will tinker with its assistant coaches, it did so Friday when it brought back defensive line coach Mike Waufle.

Cable’s return continues what has been an offseaon of stability for head coaches. Many thought Cleveland could dismiss Eric Mangini, Jacksonville could dismiss Jack Del Rio, Dallas could dismiss Wade Phillips and Oakland could dismiss Cable.

Part of this is due to the financial uncertainty surrounding 2011, a year in which players said they are preparing to be locked out. With so much uncertainty, NFL owners are opting for stability with their coaches.

You know his arthritis prohibits him from being able to get lotion into many of his body’s skin folds.

Granted, its not the most glamorous of jobs, Brian, but think of the alternative – if his skin chaffs from the salt water, you’ll have to moisturize him 3 times a day for a week with extra virgin olive oil.

So get ready for the Baja madness, Brian – and doing your part for your wacky old family!
