ESPN: Cable stays

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, January 23rd, 2010 at 5:24 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Haven’t seen an actual story as yet, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter posted on his Twitter account that the Tom Cable will remain the Raiders coach in 2010.

(UPDATE: A link to the ESPN story is here.)

It also said the Raiders said no decision is final.

Nothing yet from the Raiders . . .

After weeks of speculation and deliberation, Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis has decided to retain Tom Cable as head coach for the 2010 season, a source close to the situation told ESPN on Saturday.

good news. I’m glad to see the cable guy back (most-likely) without having to worry about play-calling. If the O-line doesn’t improve in terms of personnel, at least he will have more time with the unit now.

Brian, i know its “awful” that you won’t be able to snort marching powder the whole trip, but you do owe it to your family to help out your grandfather with his special performance.

You know his arthritis prohibits him from being able to get lotion into many of his body’s skin folds.

Granted, its not the most glamorous of jobs, Brian, but think of the alternative – if his skin chaffs from the salt water, you’ll have to moisturize him 3 times a day for a week with extra virgin olive oil.

So get ready for the Baja madness, Brian – and doing your part for your wacky old family!

  14. Sweep The Leg. Says:

The first Raider head coach to be involved 3 seasons in a row!

Oh well, Bob must’ve really boogied. Back to football. Put me in the draft Mclain in the first round camp. I like Capt. Kirk, just not in the middle. We need a thumper in there. Wanted Rey M. last year. Was impressed with what I sawe from Rolando Mclain. He looked instinctive in nat’l champ. game. Sniffed out a screen, and seemed to tackle with some pop. I don’t know what he’s listed at, but he looked big; thick in the lower body like he could take on some blocks, and clog some running lanes.

    ^^^^^^^^^
McClain is a athletic beast of a MIKE.

He is around 6′4, 252-255. His lower body and legs are big and powerful and the guy is fast and can move. He is also a tackling machine.

Since it seems Cable is staying……they better upgrade the 0-Line, D-Line and LB Corp.

Lets hope that they hire an OC like Jackson also to be Cables play caller.

  17. DKnight007 Says:

Don’t worry Cable haters…..after he wins 6 games next year…..Hue Jackson will take over as head coach or Harbaugh will most likely come onboard then. LOL

Here is my mock draft based on Davis preferences:

1st Campbell fastest LT in this draft
2nd Arenas Best Return Man in this draft and CB tackler
    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/300163-havy-you-seen-him-a-javier-arenas-accolade#page/3
3a D’Anthony Smith DT running 4.9 at this round AL takes him
3b Micah Johnson MLB yes he drops all the way cause of his injury just like M Bush.
4th Jay Ross DT Huge body can play 4-3 n 3-4 runs 5.3 while weighting over 314 lbs and 6′3 height.
5th Mitch Petrus OG this dude open lanes for DMAC and runs 5.09 can and help resurrect DMAC career.
    No 6th
7th round who cares he will get cut unless we get another Schillens

  29. DKnight007 Says:

    *******************************

Yea and we need the defense to not run the Al Davis scheme

  32. Raiders4eve Says:

My thoughts, who cares Cable goes or stays dont matter as long as we are employing a man to man defense and vertical pass offense. We need to change AL’s philosophy to compete unless we get more talented players who can fit this system. Meaning an accurate QB who can gun it in the vertical passing and solid LBs whom can tackle and shoot the gaps. Current roster is pathetic, along with the current coaches, is Sanjay Lal still coaching the wide receivers?

  33. The Return of Godliness Says:

So Tollner and Hackett’s sorry ass are prolly gone……..can Marshall’s 49er ass be sent somewhere as well?

  34. Mike Davis 36 Says:

This is a good sign, signaling as it does that there will be a true competition for Quarterback in training camp this year, as opposed to the sham we saw last year. I also believe that DHB won’t get anything handed to him, either.

  35. The Return of Godliness Says:

i dont have a problem with the offense i just had an issue with who calls the plays.

i have major issue with how the defensive scheme is being implemented and Marshall is an old fuk who needs to retire for following Al’s orders

    ^^^^^^^^^
Big, strong and stout fat guy DT’s who can move are needed…but taking a two down player like Cody who has weight issues at #8 is tough one.

Maybe Dan Williams from Tennsee will be there in Round 2. If the old man has a hard on for Cody like he had one for DHB last year….then he better TRADE DOWN…but he won’t…cuz he is stupid. LOL

  37. The Return of Godliness Says:

Mike Davis…………..a better sign is getting a real football guy to run the Raiders

  38. The Return of Godliness Says:

DK……….remember last year all that 2 down shyt people on this blog were saying about Maualuga? Well Cincy D was real good this year and if dude didnt get hurt they would have been the 2 seed instead of SD. Dont let that 2 down shyt fool you.

Also think about it………we cant stop the run at all and the FA bandaids or the late draft picks wont help. We need a real stud. Pat Williams was selected that high and is a monster in this league

  39. buckeyeraider Says:

    DKnight.
I agree. Al doesn’t really draft Lbs in first round. Only two I believe..Nap Harris and Rob Fredrickson. Like I said I like Kirk, he seems like a great guy, wants to be a Raider, positive energy, and makes a lot of tackles, and plays in space. Just not physical enough to shed Guards and fullbacks’ blocks to clog the middle. That’s where Mclain would fit in nicely. I hope Al breaks tradition. The right side of the OL also needs an overhaul. Awhile back somebody posted a list of potential free agent lineman. One I would like the Raiders to make a run at is Marshall Yanda of the Ravens. I believe he’s a restricted free agent. He doesn’t start in Baltimore I don’t think, but he plays a lot as a swingman both RG and RT on that physical Raven line. I believe he was a year or two behind Gallery at Iowa. Maybe Robert could do some recruiting.

  40. The Return of Godliness Says:

Cody weight around 365 right? He wasn’t on the field much in the 4th quarter in that national title game. McLain was in there every down practically.

Lets see the smart and wise move would be to either trade down to say 14-16 from the #8 position and draft Cody there. Or just wait and see if he falls to round 2. The old man doesn’t like doing that….so if he has that much of a hard on for Cody…your wish might come true and he reaches for Cody at #8….when there are better overall players on the board.

The thing that gets me….is that the AFC West is their for the taking but the stupid old man is more worried about tryin to hide things from the media, lie, and fight bitter battles and have war of words with former employees or players instead of knowing what needs to be done to build a winning team to take the division.

The Dis-Chargers window to make it to the super bowl is CLOSED IMO…..Denver has a weak defense and KC is still rebuilding.

The old man Al should tell Juggs Russell that if he doesn’t agree to restructure his contract down, hire a personal trainer and lose 8-10 pounds in 2-2.5 months to show he is serious about competing….then he can have lots of luck finding another team that will take on his lazy azz!

  54. Pretty Rick Says:

I’m really pulling for McClain in the 1st rnd. I think he’s the next one to become one of the great MLBs, which we need. Then take the best O-line in rnd 2, wether it be Tackle or Guard. Either way we’ll be addressing a desperate need and it will definitely be a huge upgrade as well. But definitely gota get McClain with that 8th pick.

  59. Raiders4eve Says:

    Guys

It dont matter if Cable stays or not, look at the system this team is playing. Vertical pass and man to man defense with mediocre talent. This system is made for above average players. If we gonna continue this system we need to upgrade the talent around this team period.

    Draft these guys.
    1st round McClain
give up 2nd rounder and 3rd rounder get Cody
    3rd rounder get Michah Johnson
4th rounder get Jay Ross DT Huge body
5th rounder get DMAC favorite blocker Mitch Petrus OG

    Free Agency

    Sign Kampman to replace Ellis
    Sign Chris Chambers or T.O
Sign Marcus McNeill bid high to screw SD
Sign Richie Incognito adds some toughness in this OL
Sign Nick Leckey AL gotta over pay him
Sign Dunta Robinson to play along Nnamdi and put CJ in the nickle

Get these half of these talents and we could to go with this system otherwise change to the 3-4 and play conservative offense.

Hope so….cause the I think the old man Al needs to go aggressively after Jim Harbuagh to be head coach.

Offer him 3-3.3 million a year for 4 years with an option for a 5th….just to start. I would give him up to 4 million a year.

Like I said before, if the old weird Al can waste more money on the likes of Juggs Russell and DHB…..then surely he can invest wisely on a coach like Harbaugh who is a WINNER and has huge upside as an NFL coach.

  63. vegas raider Says:

    I agree with you.

I think Cable has some good qualities as a character, and his relationship with Al. But that’s not what’s needed either. An actual good coach is key. An X&O disciplinarian coach. If they’re an Air Coryell power-blocking offensive HC that’s fine. As long as they know what they’re doing, actually schooled in that system, know how to utilize the players/talent we have.

  69. mcthompso Says:

All of these draft wants sound great. what with the beastly LB and space eating DT. Of course last year was supposed to be Raji, and hopefully a good linebacker somewhere else in the draft. Did that happen? No. If that dream couldn’t happen, hey, there was always Alex Mack we could have gotten round 1. Did that happen? No. Well we can’t get strong anywhere on the tough part of the field, so we need a good playmaker. Crabtree, Maclin, Harvin, Britt, Hicks all available. Oh DHB (Who I do like, just not as a player)?

We can give a wishlist all we want, but we all know something head scratching will happen.

  70. Raiders4eve Says:

    SATANFEARS ALDAVIS

I like Clausen but 8th pick overall is too high for him and by the way the Raiders develop rookie QBs its a disaster pick, we need a veteran like Grad or maybe shoot for Mcnabb

  71. DKnight007 Says:

If Jim Harbaugh was the head coach then I would have no problem with Clausen being the pick at #8.

    Harbaugh would develop Clausen nicely.

With Cable as head coach….picking Clausen would be a waste.

They need to sign or trade for Vick, Tyler Thigpen or Kevin Kolb to compete with Grads and maaaaaaybe Juggs.

  72. GG Says:

Like, who wouldn’t want Sean Payton as HC if we could have him?
Would we really want Cable over Payton, Trestman, Gruden, Fassell, Harbaugh….in terms of actual coaching?
It’s just the coaching turnstile we’re tired of, wanting some stability for the sake of it. But stability of bad coaching isn’t good either. The problem is Al has to bite the bullet and not diss coaches so much, actually invest in a good one for the long-haul and stop being so egotistical/petty about his own “image” or whatever it is.

I’m glad we retained Cable for another season. I’ll be happier if it is confirmed that he will give up playcalling. Cable deserved another season. The only group of people that saw him in the locker room are the players. If they vouched for him, then I’m all good for that.

Here’s to hoping for a slimmer Jawalrus and a true QB competition in camp.

  78. aig Says:

Our starting group of Oline people are pathetic. Cable is responsible for that too. To be competitive consistently, we need to be able to have a solid Oline. I hope we do improve it this offseason as our number 1 priority.

  79. buckeyeraider Says:

    Vegas,
Last time i went to Vegas, about 10 or 12 years ago, I got in a cab, the cabbie had a Raider hat on. I start talking to him, told him I was from Ohio, been Raider fan all my life, etc. He told me story, when the team was in LA, he said he used to make the 2 hour drive a couple of times a year to a game. Said one time there was a Bronco fan walking up and down the stairs in the endzone, wearing an Elway jersey, talking shyt to the Raider fans. The Cabbie said he thought to himself “this is not going to end well. He said sure enough, at halftime careflight landed in the parking lot. Somebody had beat his azz in the bathroom, doused him with something, and set him on fire”. I said damn, that was harsh. I don’t know if that story was true, but I do remember the footage on the news of the LAPD in full riot gear in the stands beating peoples azzes with batons after that Steeler fan got kicked in the head.

  80. Norco Bob Says:

Well Im happy that Cable is staying, brian isnt but we dont agree on everything, (even being the same person, we can still disagree),…but Im glad hes staying, the HC doesnt really matter these days there anyway, actually never has,…I hope that pig of an ex wife of his is steamin mad today, she was hoping he would get fired,..but sorry you loser, hes staying, getting richer, while you get none of it, hope that 5K espn gave you was worth it,…Im hearing your daughter doesnt talk to you anymore…and hey, lets face it, he smacked her in the face and she deserved it,..Randy Hanson deserved it too,…so, great day for the Cable guy…Comcast sports has never looked so stupid, and they have only themselves to blame.

  82. Norco Bob Says:

DKnight,…I already put a deposit on my 2010 season tickets, we all got a 100 dollar Image card for Xmas for it, back in early december,…If me and my friends are the only ones at the coliseum next season bfd, I dont care, and neither does al davis.

  83. Norco Bob Says:

I doubt its possible that Russell gets released, but with Cable staying, its a slight possibility,..I sure hope hes gone, hopefully they run his butt ragged in Napa for a month in the heat,….then release him.

  84. mack-madden Says:

Need confirmation from mr Davis that cable is staying before anything else.

Don’t matter what people think we should draft/sign.

It’s all up to mr Davis. He will select whomever he wants reguardless what anyone says.

It’s all bout size/speed. Two essentials for mr Davis

  85. Dark Forces Says:

The plan for Jamarcus Russell is for him to sit on the bench eating sunflower seeds in a stocking cap while making the same money as a top tier free agent.

  86. dtrain Says:

What I love about all of this is the idiots that have been writing about all these other head coaching candidates, all the reports that Cable was definitely gone. Not once, and I repeat, not a single time did you ever hear anything coming out of the Raiders head office. The local media especially just can’t ever get it right. They offer opinion based on nothing, and rarely actually just report the news!

  87. Norco Bob Says:

By the way, tomorrow I have the Colts by 17,..the Vikes by 4.

  88. buckeyeraider Says:

Sorry to get off draft topic, but you Raider fans out there in Cali got a baaad reputation. I remember watching a preseason Raider-niner game on monday night football. Somebody said why aren’t there any niner fans in Oakland. Al Michaels said are you nuts? You’d be taking your own life in your hands wearing a Steve Young jersey in this place. I remember watching Mike and the Mad Dog on yes network a few years ago when the Raiders and the Jets played in the playoffs, and somebody called in and said Fireman Ed feared for his safety at the game, left and watched the rest of the game from his hotel room. Mike Francessa actually went on television and said next time the Raiders come to town, and there are the usual 20,000 Raider fans there, people do your thing.
I’ve been to two Raider games in Cincy and one in Indy a few years ago, and never had any problems. Anybody have any expeiences?

  89. Norco Bob Says:

I dont care how much Jamarcus makes, as long as he doesnt play.

  90. SATANFEARS ALDAVIS Says:

  91. SATANFEARS ALDAVIS Says:

NOW WHAT DARK FORCES SAID WAS RACIST . hey! man.. i got on a stocking cap right now. and i got a taste 4 sunflower seeds. what u tryna say buddy ?

  92. ColoradoRaiderFan Says:

    Dtrain,

I love it when the media has “inside” sources, or “un-named” sources inside the organization, then they end up being wrong. Once their red in the face, they always say the same thing, you never know with the Raiders.

  93. SATANFEARS ALDAVIS Says:

oh and ricky williams really has been a pro bowl running back since he returned,, right ..

  94. Culebra Says:

As long as JaMarcus stays in the bench or hits the road the season should be slightly less painful to watch.

  95. Norco Bob Says:

Buckeye, dont believe everything the lyin media says,..I go to every game,..see a few fights, but thats at every stadium.

  96. Stabler76 Says:

O-line is pathetic. It was last year and especially in 2006. If the O-line had been fixed we would have never need to draft Russell. Behind a solid o-line Andrew Walter would have developed as a QB and ran the team as planned.

When did Cable take over o-line— 2007? It seems like he did and the improvements he made there from that miserable 2006 oline in the first year, is what has vaulted him to the status of play calling head coach when Lance left. I don’t get it.

ZBS is BS. Bush on the bench is BS. The o-line is as tough as whipped cream.

Look at the Jets. They have a bad ass center and oline to match. They are playing tomorrow for a spot in the super bowl with a rookie QB. Creative schemes on Defense.

Cable is so far from that. The big hope that we we supposed to hang onto this year was Shillings will be back soon or Gallery will be back soon. Meanwhile Cable calls plays where DMAC runs up the middle and Fargas goes nowhere.

I am sick of the same BS.

  97. dtrain Says:

    buckeye,
first of al michaels is an idiot. what he is saying is completely false. it is true that raiders and niners fans don’t get along but it’s only when a niner fan comes in and starts yelling and sh*t that we give them the same sh*t back. There are tons of families there with no problems at all! It’s highly exaggerated. we’re passionate fans!

  98. ColoradoRaiderFan Says:

I think fans everywhere are generally the same, except philly, they booed Santa Claus. Out here I get crap from everyone. I’ve been cursed at by old men and ladies in front of my kids. Drunks on the golf course tried to pick a fight with me when the Raiders beat the Donks.

  99. dtrain Says:

    colorado,
what cracks me up is that we don’t hear anything about the raiders and it’s reported that they do. doesn’t everyone with a job have a yearly review? we don’t go wondering if andy reid or mike tomlin were being reviewed and possibly fired. i guarantee they sat down with their bosses and had a yearly review!

what made cable the play caller is a lack of trust in the coaching staff that kiffen left behind…..i agree with cable on that part….fail or succeed on your own work rather than having some guy stab you in the back….but once he was named full time coach he should have hired an OC

    [...] Read more. [...]

  148. Zymurge Says:

For those blaming Cable and the ZBS for lack of production, just how much do you know about the ZBS anyway? I knew only the basics, so I looked up info online and found this great breakdown: http://www.rockytoptalk.com/2009/3/31/815874/zone-blocking-tutorial-inside-zone

One thing that it calls out is that the ZBS requires a certain type of RB. Fact is, none of the 3 Raiders RBs are a great fit, but Fargas is probably the best. That would explain why Cable uses him as the starter. That, and he’s also the best pass blocker. They key is that the RB must be decisive, make one quick read, and then plow towards that decision whether the hole is there at the time they commit or not. DMac lacks the cutback ability and Bush so far is too hesitant and won’t commit himself into traffic.

NFL teams that exclusively run the ZBS are Oakland, Washington, Green Bay, Carolina and Houston. How did some of the non-Raiders offenses with the ZBS do?

    Houston: #6 passing, #30 rushing, #6 overall
Green Bay: #5 passing, #11 rushing, #9 overall
    Carolina: #2 rushing, #17t rushing, #18 overall
    Washington: #12 passing, #29 rushing, #19 overall

    * all ranks based on average per play, not total yards, to give a better feel for effectiveness of system

BTW — the much maligned Raiders rushing game was #19 overall in yards per attempt, which is just under average. Not bad for a team that had a so-called horrible run blocking scheme, no passing threat for more than half the season, horrendous play calling and an offensive line that most here think needs at least 2 if not 3 of the players replaced.

Maybe, just maybe, the ZBS is the only reason that they were as successful as they were.

  149. djohnnyg Says:

I didn’t know about the new stadium. I live in the midwest.

As far as what is the Raiders true home, it doesn’t appear that when the Raiders get 30,000 fans for a football game AT THEIR HOME, that they are getting all this support, so chill out on the pompass “OAKLAND IS THE RAIDERS HOME’ crap.

  150. djohnnyg Says:

I realize they are called the ‘OAKLAND’ Raiders, and I feel for the true fans there, but let’s face it, everybody’s bailing on ‘em cuz they are losing. And to be honest, the Raiders don’t deserve sell outs with the way things have been run of late.

I guess the answer is, the Raiders start WINNING andeverything is fine. Now there’s a concept.
