Raiders predictably vague on Cable

The Raiders response to ESPN’s story claiming Tom Cable will be the coach in 2010?

We won’t say he’s staying, but we never said he was going.

The Raiders stand for a lot of things _ silver and black, pride and poise, commitment to excellence, great tailgates . . . but straight talk has never been one of them.

Let’s assume for a minute ESPN’s Adam Schefter (the false rumor mongerer) is right, just as he was as a member of the NFL Network claiming Art Shell would be fired (met initially by a Raiders denial).

This time, we’re talking about a coach the Raiders ostensibly want to keep.

Someone that, you know, they might want to get behind and support _ as they did Rob Ryan when reports surfaced about his imminent firing at the request of Lane Kiffin. (Kiffin was overruled by you-know-who).

Instead, more jabs and feints than Sugar Ray Leonard the first seven rounds against Marvin Hagler.

Cable’s not talking on the record. His agent, Don Yee, declined comment. A few players, eager to hear of Cable’s fate, aren’t returning phone calls.

Cable is expecting to attend the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., as the Raiders head coach, evaluating talent for next season.

For what it’s worth, here is the Raiders statement issued by senior executive John Herrera:

“We’ve never made any statements that the head coach would not be back. That has been media speculation from the beginning. We’ve consistently stated that we’re going through an evaluation process to determine the direction that the organization needs to go. The process is ongoing, and it has not reached a conclusion.”

Thanks for clearing that up.

Well, we could do better than Tom Cable but we could also do much worse.

Players get better with experience and so do coaches, Cable is still a young coach (45) with just 27 games under his belt, it’s hard to imagine any coach having to put up with so much adversity in the past few months as Cable did, including probably the toughest situation for a coach to handle which is to try to develop a #1 draft pick as your QB while dealing with the pressure to win now, not to mention his off-field issues.

I like the guy because he kept fighting, never backed down and now has apparently survived, it seems he’s earned the respect of the players and that should only help his cause next year.

Most of the problems with this team are mental anyway, if Cable can emerge as the strong minded leader this team needs it might be enough to get them to play up to their potential every week.

Cable’s team should have won 8 or 9 games last year, maybe next season they put it all together and finally give us a playoff contender.

Just go get a couple of OL in the draft and FA, have an open competition for the starting QB job and give this guy one more shot.

I think that says it all right there. Other than 3rd and 18 deep in their end, screen pass to their back, Howard misses a tackle, uh oh, still on his feet, gain of 90. And a touchdown.

  • http://atm Raider O

    Seymour,

That makes sense. Cable does appreciate work ethic.
IMHO work ethic is great, but it’s not enough. Players need talent, and a coach to help develop that talent.
Players like Fargas, Eugene, Brown, alston, Frye, Bruce, etc… Have a great work ethic but they lack talent.
I don’t think we can win with work ethic. We need talent and coaching. The old Raiders teams didn’t have a great work ethic, but we were loaded with talent.

I think we need more talent, and better coaching.

BTW, I enjoyed reading your response.

  • Seymour Bush

Raider O what most GM’s in most sports have come to use as a winning formula has been the high effort scrappy hungry teams. Like last years Steelers, or the year Before NY Giants, Zona Cardinals. Orlando playing in the NBA finals, Tampa Bay and Philly in MLB are other examples. I mean the Lakers and the NY Yankee teams of the last two years kind of blows that theory, but still there is certainly some truth to the theory. Now, that being said, granted you have to have some PLAYERS on your team. Rudi can only carry you so far and he is not going to single handedly beat the 2009 Alabama Crimson Tide. That is kind of a given.

Terrance Cody is a two down player who most GM’s are terrified is going to cash his big “fat” check and take the rest of his life off. Where have we heard THAT before? Dan Williams is a dominant way more athletic every down NT that will no doubt go in the lst round, who has a motor and work ethic. Who would you chose?

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

    Seymour Bush…

Giants have a BEAST O-LINE and a BEAST D-LINE during that SB run.

The Steelers defense is littered with BEASTS at NT, LB and Safety….and the Cardinals…Fitzgerals, Boldin, Breaston are as talented as they come… and Kurt Warner is a no compromises complete passer.

The Raiders have a bunch of gym rats. Great for the rec league…but you absolutely get CRUSHED during real football.

We need players that work hard AND HAVE TALENT. Louis Murphy strikes me as potentially that kind of guy.

Fargas, Eugene, Carlisle, Green, Brown, Gradkowksi, Alston, and others are role players at best…not starters that you base the season on!

  • http://atm Raider O

    Seymour,

    LMAO @ Rudi.

NY giants had a descent QB, Good Oline, and a great DLine that was full of talent.

M Strahan, Osi U, Justin Tuck, and DT Robbins. That’s more than enough talent on Defense to carry an offense.

Dan Williams is a one year wonder. His work ethic and effort have been questioned before. How the fuk is he is 3 down player when he lacks pass rushing ability? He isnt the monster Cody is and its not even close. Terrence Cody could have entered last year’s draft could Dan Williams?

People need to realize the Raiders will not get any better until they address the biggest problem on the field………….in the interior of the dline.

  • Seymour Bush

yeah but look at that Giants offensive line:
Diehl fifth rounder, Shaun O’Hara the leader of the line was undrafted! So was Rich Seubert! David Tyree? Brandon Jacobs was a 4th rounder. Ahmad Bradshaw a SEVENTH rounder! Where did those guys come from? That’s a mean scrappy team.

Look at Pittsburgh: Hartwig and Keomatu were 6th rounders, Willie Parker undrafted. Kiesel was a 7th rounder, and their corners were late picks. Pitt is a little different in the fact that they do a REALLY GOOD job of drafting. NFL Defensive MVP James Harrison was UNDRAFTED! But those are all EXTREMELY HIGH MOTOR GUYS!

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

The Raiders need to focus on running the ball and stopping the run.

That’s it! The passing game will always be down because Al Davis hasn’t developed a QB in over 30 yrs…he relies on free agents and hopes that someone else makes a mistake…happens occassionally….

The defense is a rank joke. Soft to the touch and filled with speedy guys that can’t play physical football. Everytime they line up against the physical teams…they get smashed. The run defense is non-existant.

Run the ball and stop the run. Let’s do that before thinking about becoming this high flying passing attack.

I don’t know if ZBS is holding us back, but F Pete said it best: it’s being used as an excuse not to draft OL in the 1st 2 RDs, and an excuse to have guys like Cooper, Green, Pears, Harris, Barnes ( who I wanted us to sign), Satele, and Morris.

TROG, I don’t know if I would blame the Raider woes on the DT positions. Were those guys all pro? Certainly not. But the defense played very well in spots and then gave up HUGE plays in both the run and passing games. Normally that would not be the fault of the DT’s. Should there be an upgrade at the position? Absolutely. Is Terrance Cody the answer? Don’t get me wrong, I like Cody an awful lot, but I am completely tired of fat ass players that seemingly don’t give a fukk.

Go look at the game tape of Gerard Warren fronting like a run sutffer. He cant shed double team blocks and tries to play the one technique and shoot the gaps. That has allowed Kelly to take on most ofthe double teams and the Raiders get gashed up the gut.

With Cody that shyt is cut in half for sure. How do you know Dan Williams wont get a fat check and not give a fuk when he comes out to Cali?

  • ohioraider

Cut back blocking constitutes pusy line play? Didn’t Denver’s OL develop a nasty reputation using ZB? And for years didn’t Denver lead the league in rushing by turning average runners into superstars using this scheme?

Look, I don’t know what “scheme” is ultimately the answer but the main problem with our line was mostly related to mistakes and poor pass blocking.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

Draft status has nothing to do with being “scrappy”

Scrappy to me means a player that doesn’t have the talent to excel and therefore must play with extraordinary energy to get buy…they give you a play or two here and there…they may even give you a spirited play or two. But they can’t do it for 16 games…just can’t.

Scrappy teams work until you run into a team with high motor guys with talent.

5-11 is what scrappy teams do….

the ZBS would not be incongruent with a deep passing game. The Jets run it and they had the number one run O in the league last year they just don’t incorporate the deep passing game which would be a nice feature. If you are going to heave the rock deep down the field, you need one of the if not THE preeminent Offensive lines in the league. Otherwise, you get killed. We don’t have that so we get killed.

    —–

Hate the playuh and/or the execution; not the system.

The Jets seem to be just fine with the ZBS. And that’s with a rookie QB and a rookie RB that is taking over the majority of carries.

The Jets also have a few higher round picks that make up their OL, so it’s not necessarily the case that the ZBS is made for low round castoffs. With more teams moving to the ZBS, the best OL fit for the system are starting to see increased demand for their services.

  • Zymurge

    =====

Were you watching the first half of the Indy-Jets game? The Jets used the ZBS based run to set up a deep pass to Edwards for a long TD. The announcers were talking about how the Jets players were saying that their running game didn’t really take off until after the trade for Edwards and a legit deep threat to keep the defense honest.

Which brings us back to the Raiders. In Al’s mind he’s on the right page. He has the blocking scheme, the coach to run it, and is stockpiling deep threats. Of course the grand flaw is that the QB that he wanted to execute doesn’t scare the defenses at all.

Get a QB in there that can make the deep throws, and continue slowly upgrading the OL, and this is a formula for success. Taking OC duties away from Cable and letting him be more in tune with coaching the ZBS and that’s a step in the right direction as well.

  • ohioraider

    Long live the ZBS!
