Coach until told otherwise

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, January 25th, 2010 at 4:35 pm in Oakland Raiders.

There are two ways for a head coach to deal with the sort of uncertainty brought to bear by the Raiders.

There’s the Lane Kiffin approach _ show up at the Senior Bowl without a Raiders shield in sight, wearing a gray hat with an NFL logo, decline comment on the record, but send out as many smoke signals as possible to let people know Al Davis has stripped the coach of any authority and that continued employment isn’t necessarily a foregone conclusion.

Or there’s the Bill Callahan approach _ named “captain of the coaches” following the trade of Jon Gruden to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he simply rolled up his sleeves, went to work and conducted himself as a head coach should until finally informed three weeks later when invited by Davis to talk about a contract to be head coach.

As Cable surfaces in Mobile, Ala., this week for the Pro Bowl, expect him the Callahan approach. If Cable talks at all, it will be something along the lines of what he said at the end of the season. He’s already on record as saying he thought he’d be back, no reason to alter that approach now. He’ll wear the right gear and may even have “Team of the Decades” stamped on his forehead.

The Callahan and Cable situations, other than the fact that they’re both offensive line coaches who at the time had the support of their respective locker rooms (that changed dramatically for Callahan following the 2003 season), were dramatically different in that the former was the natural choice to lead a veteran team coming off consecutive division titles and the latter is 9-19 with a youthful team that has no history of success.

Unless Davis has told Cable directly he will remain on the job _ something even Adam Schefter’s definitive “Cable will return story” didn’t claim _ he’s simply working on the assumption he will be the coach until told otherwise.

Judging by how Cable handled the Randy Hanson and ESPN firestorms, he’s not going to need a vote of confidence, whether public or private, to remain sane.

Kiffin, who said later he understood his first-year “honeymoon” to be over after a 4-12 season, couldn’t handle not knowing what Davis was saying and doing behind his back. He couldn’t believe it when he someone outside the organization told him James Lofton had been hired as the wide receivers coach without his knowledge. Kiffin had talked with Lofton, but that was as far as it went.

He played the martyr and began planning an exit strategy.

The silence never seemed to bother Callahan. He was the obvious choice for the job, and many, including myself, figured he’d been told beforehand and that the Raiders simply had elected not to make the decision public. They’d tell us when they felt like it.

The assumption turned out to be wrong. Callahan wasn’t called in to talk contract until March 12 and his hiring was announced March 13.

Davis explained why he proceded that way the following day when Callahan was introduced.

“I wanted to see and we wanted to see Bill function in that role to see how the organization would operate, how would we do in the free-agent market,” Davis said. “And we felt after a short period of time we could compete with anyone.”

The same thing is going on with Cable. Davis is waiting and watching. Even if he’s already decided Cable will be back, there’s no reason to tell him or even his own public relations staff. No reason to let him get comfortable.

Extra points

– The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting the Chicago Bears hope to interview Hue Jackson for their offensive coordinator opening. Jackson interviewed with the Raiders for an undisclosed position, believed to be offensive coordinator. The Raiders said they have conducted no interviews for the head coaching position.

ESPN is reporting Jackson will meet with the Bears Tuesday.

– Looking for some kind of Raiders angle in this year’s Super Bowl? None of their castoffs have made it to this year’s big game _ not a player on either roster who has spent time with the Raiders.

Instead, you’ve got Aaron Kromer, the Saints running game and offensive line coach. Kromer, by the way, worked for the Raiders under Gruden and with Gruden at Tampa Bay and is an aspiring offensive coordinator under Sean Payton.

Hmm . . .

– When tight end Dallas Clark made the Super Bowl, a Miller was elevated to the Pro Bowl from alternate status. Unfortunately, it was Heath Miller, the first alternate from the Pittsburgh Steelers, and not Zach Miller, the second alternate from the Raiders.

Heath Miller caught 76 passes for 789 yards and six touchdowns, Zach Miller had 66 receptions for 805 yards and three touchdowns.

– Peyton Manning insists his young receivers, such as Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie, do an extra hour and a half of film study with him one day a week. That’s above and beyond what they do with their position groups.

You’ll notice the Colts aren’t huge into shifts and motions, either. They just kill you with precision execution that comes from repetitive practice and a gifted quarterback who gets angry if things aren’t perfect.

The Raiders aren’t big into shifts and motions, either. But it’s as if the two teams, when it comes to the passing game, aren’t even playing the same sport.

Of course it’s a game of talent, but it’s also huge parts coaching and executing, matching players to a scheme, and getting those players to think and play as one.

Hit my big two team teaser yesterday….took the Colts and the under 59.5 in the Saint game.

The Vikes blew it by turning the ball over in the red zone too many times which took points off the board.

One of my boys is a huge Vikes fan and he can’t talk about it right now….it will take him at least a week.

Love the line movement so far in the Super Bowl.

started at 4.5 for Indy….went up last night to 5 and today moved to 5.5.

I took the Saints on a teaser and the under.

I also took the Saints plus 5.5 straight up.

Hope the line goes up more!

but there isn’t anything like tailgating at a raider game. i remember i went to the raider/charger game in sd for a 5pm game i think in 2001. last time i go to a night game, i was so smashed.

    ^^^^^^^^^
Tailgating at every Raider home game only lasted so long with me.

Raiders management needing to make better decisions and start putting out a better product is more important to me then getting hammered at a Raider tailgate.

    What up Nation?

Man it’s been wild down here in the N.O.
That Saints win yesterday was surreal for this city. People were in the stands hugging each other and crying. It was like a huge church service. Then it got really wild outside. People around the city were shutting down streets and not just the small ones. The whole city partied in the streets in EVERY neighborhood and most were popping fireworks. That seen you all saw of Bourbon Street was the way all neighborhoods were last night. Even the cops had their sirens on full blast and not messing with anyone. It was all love down here.

I watched from home with the family draped in my JaMarcus jersey from (Vegas Raider) and Raiders beanie. But I had fun with everyone else. People were partying with pictures of their fathers and mothers who passed away just to allow their spirit and memory enjoy the victory. EVERY neighborhood sounded like a stadium with loud cheering and music. Thousands did not make it to work today.

You take the points baby, but the Saints got to Favre. The fumbles and turn over might lead one to think the Vikes shot themselves and handed it to N.O., but their D applied serious pressure tha reminded me of Brady and the Giants or how Manning looked against the Pats in recent play offs…

    Saints could be marching in…

You might be right Satan. IMO they exhausted everything they had into last nights game. That was the Saints Super Bowl. This will be a classic case of just happy to be here. But you never know.

Stats don’t tell everything: Brees was 17-31, 3 TDs 0 ints. And he was horrible. Brees almost choked it away. Notice late in the 4th and OT Sean Payton knew it and call alot of running plays. Most of Brees throws were way off the mark and many plays he held the ball too long.

Brees felt the pressure of having this entire region on his back and how bad this city wanted to get to Super Bowl. The moment was too big for him. He looked like the Brees that made S.D. draft Rivers.

Here’s the Senior Bowl Opening Scouting Report on Mt. Cody:

    Terrence Cody, Alabama, DT
The disappointment surrounding Cody has little to do with his on-field play. The mammoth defensive tackle weighed in at 370 pounds, and looked woefully out of shape. Although few prospects can rival his ability to control the middle of the line, concerns about his weight have raised red flags in some draft rooms.

Glad you can enjoy the jersey and the party out there. If they win the Bowl, that place will be off the chains crazy.

Have a hurricane and a few crawfish for me.

Mt. Cody in round 3 anybody?

Brees was shaky yesterday, I never seen him throw so many wobblers. Couldn’t even spin off a good spiral at times, and that seems like a confidence issue. Trying to aim it, instead of throwing it.

I like the Colts to win, but maybe not cover. But how do you bet against Peyton right now? That guy is unreal.

  • 504 Raider

    Vegas,

I’ve never had alcohol in my life so won’t be sippin a hurricane. But I did have a 12 inch shrimp and oyster half and half poboy today with a huge piece of King Cake.

There will be two weeks of partying until the Super Bowl then a week after that is the biggest weekend leading up to Mardi Gras then two days after that is Mardi Gras Day.

Wish you guys could see this stuff man. It’s really something else down here.

    09′ 5-11
    08′ 5-11
    07′ 4-12
    06′ 2-14
    05′ 4-12
    04′ 5-11
    03′ 4-12

7 Straight Double-Digit Losing Seasons. (NFL Record)

    Al Davis:

    Lowest attendance in the NFL.
2nd least valuable franchise in NFL.

    In the last 7 years:
    5 Head Coaches,
    8 Starting QB’s.
    1 General Manager, Al Davis
    Since Free Agency:

6 winning seasons in the last 20.

3 winning seasons in the last 15.

Do you really believe scapegoating YET ANOTHER Head Coach is going to solve this mess?
    ……………………………………..

You forgot to mention Oakland has the highest team payroll too. Not a lot of bang for the buck.

Never in your life? Wow, don’t know if I’ve ever heard of such a thing. More power to you.

I’m down with the oysters and all the seafood. I’ve never been to the South, it’s on the list.

  • Seymour Bush

You might be able to excuse Cody if he played for someone like Un of Colorado and has been sitting around for the last two months. But didn’t this guy just played in the National Championship game three weeks ago? He can’t keep himself in condition for three weeks? These are arguably the most important weeks of this kids life between the National Championship game/Senior Bowl/Combine/Draft. This guy has 3 years and out branded all over him right now. But someone will draft him. Will Cody wake up and become a serious player? Fat chance.

  • Seymour Bush

12 inch Shrimp and Oyster poboy? Now THAT sounds pretty damn tasty.

Another very good post, Krappy. Concise, legible and without a single misspelled profanity.

And, more importantly, not a single mention of the Raiders win/loss record over the past 7 seasons.

You are really taking my instruction well, Krappy. See all the good things that can happen when you stop being a deranged old knob and learn from your wise, handsome pal Beeecham?

Try another post, Krappy and remember – take it very slow and be sure to be aware of any uncontrollable pant crapping that might occur in all the excitement.

    LMFAO!

    370, and he’s broke!

4 bills easy with fat pockets.

  • jhill

    Not surprising ….

Tebow is continuing to struggle under center. His timing and rhythm are off, even for a quarterback working with new receivers. He also seems to be having problems reading the defense, which combined with his elongated release makes him late on some throws. However, he is not hanging his head and is remaining positive and embracing the leadership role.

  • 504 Raider

    Seymour,

A shrimp and oyster half and half is fried shrimp on one half and fried oysters on the other half. It’s (dressed, what we call it) with shredded lettuce, tomato, mayo, hot sauce and ketchup on 12 inch French Bread. Depending on where you get it, the shrimp and oysters fall off the poboy and there would be enough to make an additional sandwich (on a seperate bun).

  • NorthernD

I’m amazed that I still see people ranting about drafting Cody. As if watching a slug like JaMarcus wasn’t enough, they want the Raiders to draft a 370 lb sleeping machine.
He’s probably down to 370 after a crash diet.
I’m sure that his weight has caused some red flags, sirens, bells and warning calls of ” LARD AHOY…”

Go back and look through the drafts for the huge linemen drafted in the first. With the rare exception, they almost never pan out. They don’t have the agility to do all that is required of their positions. Coaches don’t want to take out plays from their playbooks, because Mr. Heavy Breather can’t make it to the hole in time.
Pro Bowl rosters are littered with 6-4 and 315.
Guys like Cody, as much fun as it is to speculate on just what he could become, rarely make an impact. Except in the post career belly flop competitions.

  • NorthernD

I’d like Tebow on the Raiders.
Just not at quarterback. Make him an H-back/special teams captain…

Good reports on Tony Pike. He might be a nice mid to late round pick up. He needs to add about 20 lbs for the pro game. I watched him at Cincinnati and he reminds me of Marc Wilson, except with a cheesy looking mustache that has to go.

Biggest problem with Tebow, IMO, is that windmill delivery. Byron Leftwich, had a stronger arm, but he had a long slow delivery too. He couldn’t thrive in the NFL because of that.

May be just may be the Raiders will have Jamarcus Russell spend 90 days with Tony Horton and force feed him … bad choice of words… the P90X system. May be shed the fat and introduce a little foot speed so he can move around the pocket.

  • priesttj

Oh! I guess now everybody sees what was obvious to a blind man about Cody. This is one guy who has a real chance to literally eat his way out of the league. I also think he will be plagued with injuries. You can get away with going hard every 3rd in college but it wont wash in this league. He has no stamina and his motor switch’s off way too often.

It also cracks me up to see the media tied in knots over the coaching thing. What is it with this obsession to know who will be the coach when we already have a coach? It seems like total lunacy to me. Wait and see if Cable is fired first then take it from there. It’s Jan 25th and they’re still in hot pursuit……I got a clue for ‘em! The Raiders have a coac and until they don’t RELAX!!!!
