Raiders statement

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, January 26th, 2010 at 11:59 am in Oakland Raiders.

The following statement was issued by the Raiders:

The Oakland Raiders are pleased to announce that Hue Jackson has joined The Oakland Raiders coaching staff as Offensive Coordinator. Jackson is a veteran assistant who has vast experience as an offensive coordinator both at the college and National Football League levels.

Jackson, who most recently as Baltimore’s quarterbacks coach helped the Ravens advance to the postseason in 2008 and 2009, is excited about the opportunity to join the Raiders. Jackson and Coach Cable previously worked together on two college staffs – as assistants at Cal State Fullerton in 1990 and at the University of California in 1996.

So,, Hackett was stripped of OC duties because he didn’t like Russell. This means that Jackson was only hired because he agreed to work with (translation: take the fall for…) Russell.

Jamarcus starting in 2010 = Norco Bob has to double his booze, pot, and pills intake for 2010…damn.

Late in the season, there was talk that Hackett’s blunt reviews of JaMarcus Russell didn’t sit well with Davis.

    ***

gotta side with Hackett on this one. He’s one of the best QB coaches in the game and if he calls Russell a bust obviously he knows what he’s talking about.

a lot moreso than a few Raider fans who blame everybody but Russell, despite the fact that he doesn’t “want it” or “get it” as his teammates and other coaches suggest.

  8. KoolKell Says:

Jackson said that while he talked with Cable, most of his time was spent with the owner.

“Tom and I have had some good conversations, but I spent most of my time talking with Mr. Davis,” Jackson said. “What a man. He’s one of the guys in this profession that you would like to have an opportunity to sit down and talk with, let alone work for. My conversations with him led me there. Hopefully, things will work as planned, and I think we’re capable of doing it.”

Ahhhh yeah, he’s been wanting to be a Raider since before he was born. Dreamed about Al Davis all through his adolescence. ;-)

  9. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Exactly, AIG. He was the QB coach, and not the OC, because he didn’t like JaMarcus and Davis knew he would emphasize a running game to keep the game out of Russell’s hands. Can you think of a better reason that Tom Cable was calling plays while Hackett was holding a clip board?

  10. RaiderRockstar Says:

As OC Jackson’s QB’s were Patrick Ramsey, Tim Hasselbeck, Joey Harrington and Chris Redman…

now he gets JaMarcus Russell & Bruce Gradkowski.

LOL. is this guy a glutten for punishment or what ???

  11. JB Says:

Now that we have Jackson AND the fact that he’s familiar with Troy Smith, RFA-Ravens, maybe he’ll recommend to AD that we pick up Smith in the off season to compete for the starting QB position. Jackson has unique inside information about Smith and can really make an informed choice. He certainly won’t want to deal with JaBustus unless they just keep JaBustus around to park the cars & sweep up after practice. I really think JaBustus’s days are about done. If he comes to camp over 250# he’s NFL history – the BIGGEST BUST EVER!

  12. aig Says:

  13. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Anyhow, this means Russell is staying, and will be our starting QB.

do teams ever carry an Offensive Coordinator AND Passing Game Coordinator ???

    My guess is “no” …

so Ted Tollner & Dwayne Board are out?

  35. LakeCountyRaider Says:

If JaMarcus sucks again, I don’t think Cable will hold back on pulling him out at putting Gradkowski in. He did it this year, and unfortunately that might realistically be our best possible situation for next year. At least they would continue to push each other and switches back and forth would hold both accountable.

Using that criteria, FAT ALBERT should be named as JaBustus’s new coach. There does come a time to cut your losses and move on. We’ve already arrived at that point. Now, it’s time to move on as fas as JaBustus goes. Let him go home and buy a Southern Fried Chicken franchise and live happily ever after.

  46. Frank YoooooooLLL Says:

Mr Real Madden, I was an assistant coach at Mac in Oakland for many many years, then moved on to coach in hayward baseball league, coached all the Del Rio boys in the late 70’s early 80’s and as a hispanic coach I seen alot of disrespect from black athletes to white coaches some was done behind backs and some crap was done out in the open, if Jamarcus is as imature as they say I wouldnt put it past him. Dont claim to be an expert but I have enough coaching years to know what comes down the tubes with the players….

  47. aig Says:

    Mr.

Florida Pete said it best. that’s my answer to your question.

Sometimes, you need someone who understands how these young guys think to really be able to get their attention. Vince Young said Kobe Bryant was instrumental in helping him. Ocho Cinco said Denzel really knocked some sense into him.

  48. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Frank, how do you know those coaches were disrespected because they were white? Respect has to be earned. Nobody’s entitled to it. Black people never disrespect black people? Is that why there’s so much black on black crime? Your rationale that a black player will somehow respond better to a black coach is flawed, at best. Your attempt to explain it just falls flat. You coached football in Oakland…LOL. Please. What the hell is that supposed to mean? Oakland is a very diverse city. It’s not all black.

  49. aig Says:

    Frank,

good post. You are absolutely correct.

  50. morilla Says:

You could have Singletary, Tomlin, Green, Sam Jackson and Obama coach that f-in dud and it is not going to matter. I can’t believe that p.o.s. is still on the team, let alone in the NFL.

  51. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

AIG, what did Florida Pete say? I don’t scroll up. Not my style. Speak your mind or sit down, dude. I take that as a non answer.

And, of course you need someone who understands young guys to help young guys. But how does that demonstrate that Jackson would help Russell? How does that prove that it takes a black guy to help a young black guy? I asked you how Jackson would be able to help Russell just by being black alone. I didn’t ask you what it takes to motivate young people.

  52. aig Says:

    Mr.

Take for example Vernon Davis. Finally another black man of authority told him to stfu and do his work. so far so good no?

  53. LakeCountyRaider Says:

JaMarcus does not have a role model who can show him how to be a leader. Leadership is required at the QB position and Jackson will have to show him the way. Cultural similarities definitely played a role in this decision, matching up the OC and QB. I does matter that he is Black.

  54. Frank YoooooooLLL Says:

In the days I coached in oakland it was mostly black especially at Mac, being hispanic I was a little privy to some of the goings on about coaches from the black kids and so forth, it was mostly ignorant stuff about white man cant play ball how can they coach stuff, never seen a coach in my 40 years of coaching I have never seen a coach disrespect any kids more than the others. This is what I have experienced in my time as coaching. What have you experience to you have in the field.

  55. aig Says:

    Mr.

no one is saying its for sure going to work. I’m saying may be they give it try. Who the hell know if it is going to work.

  56. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

    AIG,

What does Singletary being black have to do with his ability to motivate Davis? What evidence can you cite that race played a role in Singletary motivating Davis? You seem to think about race an awful lot, applying it to everything. Why?

  57. Frank YoooooooLLL Says:

And by disrecspect I mean the yelling and raising hell that coaches used to do in the day.

  58. Frank YoooooooLLL Says:

And Mr Madden you can take the example of it the other way around, Shell didnt have his lockeroom and he was black, just tellin you what I have experienced

  59. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Frank, the reason the black kids you coached said that white people can’t play ball is because from their experiences, it’s true. That’s not an ignorant statement, just an obvious observation. Again, how do you know that some black kids will only be motivated by black coaches? You’re yet to answer that. You just keep going off topic, and then trying to pass off being a coach in Oakland as expertise. I haven’t seen it. Sorry.

  60. 408RAIDER Says:

    Wow!

    yall some racist… smh

  61. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Thank you for proving my point, Frank. Shell didn’t have his locker room, and he was black. Al probably hired him with the same flawed logic you guys have, that black players will somehow respond to him just because he’s black, like black people speak this coded language to each other. Goes to show Al Davis has slipped in his whole race relations legacy, too. Only a slave owner could have though of trying that sooner.

  62. SR Raider Says:

Most people do relate better to people who are similar to them – that’s only natural. However there’s a lot more to that than skin color – attitude, work ethic, sense of humor, musical taste, etc.

Russell’s problem is that he has no passion for the game. If Jackson can help with that, then great. Personally, I believe Jackson will become as fed up with Russell as every other coach and player on the team. How can you pay $15+ mil to a guy who isn’t even self-motivated?

    ==================================================

This is a really good point. What most of you miss, is the game has come SO EASY for this guy up until this level. Pop Warner, Pee Wee, High School, even the SEC, this guy could just go out there and be a Man among boys. That is VERY unusual. He didn’t have to do ANYTHING, and he could excel. Well, that’s not the case in the NFL. Those are paid pro’s on the other side, some of whom take their craft VERY seriously. The mistake the Raiders made was they brought in Dante Culpepper to mentor Jamarcus. Daunte does most of his film study at home, passed out on his couch. They would have been better suited to have Mike Vick mentor Jamarcus from his cell in Leavenworth.

  67. aig Says:

    Mr.

Grow up. Stop twisting everyone’s posts. The bottomline is they tried a few white guys to motivate him. It didnt work. Now they are going to try a brother to hopefully make it work. 79. RaiderfanNY Says:

Just the fact that Hue Jackson is willingly entering this morass makes me question his sanity.

    How can he succeed?

Big Al is doing his best to weaken the team by taking away any authority Cable had. He’s disrespecting his head coach in front of the whole world, making him go the Senior Bowl before “the process” is concluded, just so Big Al can tell Adam Schefter he’s wrong.

The players will know that Cable is hanging by a thread from Day One of camp. Those who don’t want to listen to him, especially those with Big Al Scholarships, simply won’t.

Davis continues to believe that coaches don’t matter, and that only he and the players determine who wins. But he’s wrong, like he’s wrong about everything.

After JaMarcus fails again, Cable and Jackson will get the boot. And Big Al will start all over with another group of stooges who can’t get jobs anywhere else.

The great thing about having Herrera as team spokesman is that he doesn’t put a professional gloss over the team’s disfunction. He’s the perfect flak for Big Al — mean, buffoonish and unintentionally hilarious.

I haven’t seen “Jersey Shore,” but it sounds like a good representation of Big Al’s staff meetings.

  80. Silver-n-Smac Says:

    O.K. Dumbass. . . (a.k.a. Richocrap). . . .

You asked someone else to name you 5 things Cable does well:

    1. Cable is blunt with his players. If you suck, he tells you suck. When Michael Huff sucked last year, Cable benched him. And that’s made him a better player today. Cable let the $30 million dollar QB have ample opportunity to prove himself (which he never did). And then he pulled the plug on him. Whether or not this was done with the owner’s consent is irrelevant. The point is that he has more clout with the owner than any Raider coach since Gruden. And Jerry has pointed this out to your pee-sized brain on numerous occasions. There are numerous examples of this and I’m not gonna waste another paragraph citing examples for you.

    2. Cable wants to be a Raider. He respects what the Raiders are all about and is fully aware of the wacky ways of the owner. You can minimize this all you want, but, frankly – it’s a big deal. If you don’t acknowledge that, you’re an idiot. (of course, this is no news to anyone)

    3. The team has finished the season with desire and effort each of the previous 2 seasons. A head coach has one fundamental role on any football team and that is to manage 53 different personalities and keep a team focused until the end. Shortcomings of talent or players simply playing like crap (i.e. Russell) is not in the head coach’s power. I’ll be the first to say that effort should be inbred in every single professional athlete. But, as we’ve seen in years past, that hasn’t been the case around here. None of the coaches between Gruden & Cable got that kind of effort from the players at the end of the season.

    4. Play calling. You wanna laugh? Go ahead and laugh dumbass. Transfer all the plays Cable called this year to the Saints or Colts or any of the “respectable” teams and those play calls would have led to success. Was Cable a bit too ambitious given the QB he had to work with? Sure. But you can only dumb down your offense so much. At some point, players have to get it done and they did not. Don’t blame that on the coach. I’ll criticize a guy for being way too conservative, but, not for being ambitious. (i.e. 4 pass plays from the 2 yard line). Guess what – if one of those 4 passes is completed by the QB, we don’t have this conversation.

    5. Handled all the crap that was thrown at him this year (some deservedly, some not) with minimal-to-no distraction to his players. He kept his focus on his team, without ever snapping at the media and without losing focus on his players. Players see that and as a result, form a tighter bond with their coach. Sappy? Yeah, whatever – that’s the truth.

By the way, did I mention you’re a dumbass?

Well, now you’re starting to face reality and making a little more sense, so I give you props. But you still seem to be a little hung up on the idea that a black coach will somehow help black players because he’s black. And then, you debunk your own point, by bringing up Art Shell’s ineptitude. Thanks, genius!

  89. M Lonetree Says:

    RaiderfanNY,

if someone offered you a million dollars (whatever the going rate is for an OC these days) for a year of working at a game in California would you find it insane to take the offer or insane not to take the offer?

  90. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Alright, Frank, nice debating with you too, I guess. Although it would be a stretch to say that I respect your opinions. Suggesting that only black coaches can motivate black players? It’s hard for me to respect idiocy and racism. But I wish you a good day, nonetheless.

  91. SR Raider Says:

I believe that Al hired Jackson because Jackson came in and presented a compelling vision for what he wanted the offense to do. He may have had some specifics relating to Russell, but more likely he just impressed Al with his desire for coaching and his offensive football knowledge. That, and a whole lot of ass kissing.

  92. Frank YoooooooLLL Says:

Mr Madden now I know why so many people call you such rude names, maybe you need to calm down and get you a white anger management coach.

  93. Lucifer-666 Says:

    #91 SR Raider

You are more than likely dead on!

  94. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Well, SR, that’s a fancy way of putting it. Al hired Jackson to either motivate Russell or take the fall for him. The Russell buck now stops at Jackson. If Russell fails, don’t look at me, it was Jackson. He was supposed to whip him into shape. I find it very trouble that the noted Davis worshipers in here are suggesting that Jackson’s being black will help him motivate Russell. It makes you wonder if that played a role in Al’s decision, too. Figuring he can just hire a black assistant, put him in charge of Russell, and he Russell fails, it’s all on Jackson now, not Davis.

  95. Frank YoooooooLLL Says:

I must repeat myself I never said a black coach will motivate a black player every time, maybe not any of the time but if Jackson is black and Jamarcus is black maybe just maybe it might make an improvement, but I dont think so. And never in my life have i ever been called racist, I have been a victim of racism many times but never accused.

  96. RaiderRockstar Says:

Hue Jackson will do no better than 5 wins if he’s stuck with Russell at QB. his play the past 3 seasons has been atrocious. If he continues on the same path he will be labeled the biggest bust in Raiders (possibly NFL) history …

give Hue an open QB competition. let Russell EARN the starting job. bring back Bruce, Charlie, Danny & J.P. If JaMarcus outplays them and gains the respect from his coaches & teammates, then he should and will start.

  97. Silver-n-Smac Says:

Does it ever occur to the media that when it all comes down to it, it’s none of their damned business how long the Raiders want to remain quiet about what their coaching decision process involves.

Some clown speculates that the Raiders have interviewed this guy or that guy.

The Raiders deny it. The guy himself denies it.

    Who’s the one being responsible?

    The Raiders?

    I think not.

So Mr. Jerry, before you repeatedly make fun of this team’s management, just think about that fact for a minute.

The Raiders aren’t the ones who said anything about Cable being let go or not.

It was all media speculation. And THAT is what’s irresponsible.

Could the Raiders make things more simple by just coming out and declaring that Cable is remaining as head coach?

    Sure they could.

But if they choose not to, they haven’t done anything wrong because it’s none of your damned business.

If you can’t stand it, then write about something else.

There’s nothing more irresponsible than bogus media proclamations from bogus sources.

  98. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

I’m not concerned with people who call me names in here, Frank. I speak my mind, if people don’t like it, so be it. Again, I can not respect your arguments when you unnecessarily invoke race. I thought your points today were very stupid. It’s almost as if you were insisting on something that you made up in your own mind. And the real highlight was when you brought up Shell, essentially debunking yourself! Got to thank you for that. It’s like running into the wrong end zone. Thank you for the easy 6.

I believe that you are wrong in your assessment of Hue Jackson being the fall guy.

Russell’s failing are already well-documented and known to the Managing General Partner of the Raiders or he would not have signed off on Cable’s demotion of the QB.

Hue Jackson may be regarded as a chance to salvage the investment in Russell but he was not signed to merely take the fall if JRuss either refuses to put in the work or is incapable of implementing himself as a viable QB.

  113. SR Raider Says:

MR – I seriously hope that you’re wrong about Jackson being the fall guy for Russell, but, knowing Al, you’re probably right. The biggest problem with the Raiders is that Al won’t take responsibility for any of this. If he would just step up to a microphone and own up, the healing could begin. Until then, we’ll have these same conversations year after year.

  114. Silver-n-Smac Says:

And If I hear the term “Gunslinger” (Favre) one more time, I’m gonna puke.

  115. Silver-n-Smac Says:

For what it’s worth, my opinion of Jackson’s role is as follows:

He’ll have less to do with Russell’s individual development and more to do with the team-wide offensive concept (i.e. establish a great running game and work the pass off of that).

That philosophy, in itself, will indirectly help Russell’s play.

Asking JaMarcus to carry an offense at this point in his career is clearly a mistake.

  122. Silver-n-Smac Says:

The ideal situation would be for JaMarcus to sit the entire year next season (remember – Philip Rivers sat on the bench for 2 years in a row before ever starting).

By 2011, Russell would kinda be outta-sight, outta-mind.

All the public negativity that currently surrounds him would be fused a bit (similar to Alex Smith’s & Vince Young’s situations).

And at that point, you would hope that he will have really changed his entire outlook on football and the preparation it requires.

Bobby, dumber than Javon Walker? guy just got PAID by the Raiders and he goes to Vegas to start spraying champagne on people, when the last time he was there his best friend died in his lap after a club altercation …

    considers retirement. gets reinjured

gets offseason surgery overseas without even letting the Raiders know until he shows up for camp (still wasn’t 100 percent healthy)

LOL. now thats pretty stupid, right?

at least he took a paycut last offseason :)

Frank is right. I understand some people have a hard time seeing it.
I don’t blame u. But frank is no racist. I see it for what it is. Not all athletes only play hard for a coach they can relate to. But some do. Some players are self motivated. Most aren’t.
Some need a wake up call to start handling business. Some go hard off the jump.

It is what it is. I do understand how some aren’t able to see it tho.
U just have to live it. Not saying it’s right. It just the way it is

Hey Mac Madden, I was born and raised in oakland and went to Fremont High, I coached with Leo Allemano at the age of 20 then moved on to coach at mac, then to the hayward leagues, and I guess some guys dont think this doesnt go on in the highschool ranks but it does and that was back in the day probably worse now. But I surly dont mean to come off as a racist, its just the way it was with some kids.

Now that we have Jackson AND the fact that he’s familiar with Troy Smith, RFA-Ravens, maybe he’ll recommend to AD that we pick up Smith in the off season to compete for the starting QB position. Jackson has unique inside information about Smith and can really make an informed choice.

    ==============================

Amen and frankly maybe Troy could teach Jamarcus about how to prep and be a veteran. If not, Troy boy can get the job done. He’s a hidden gem at Qb no lie. Don’t care if he’s 5-11 or what evs…

Russell scored a 24 on his wonderlic, came out a Junior and has had how many coaching changes since joining the NFL?

To call him stupid is incorrect. Lazy, uninspired, maybe, but not an idiot.

Hard to get a read on the guy. Very aloof, and doesnt really show disappointment. I know he didnt have the locker room, and Schillens was like “No comment” when asked about Russell following Ravens game.

Jackson’s a good hire. If you follow the track record, he worked with Cable before, helped develop receivers Ocho Cinco and TJ Housh back in Cincy, and helped develop Joe Flacco. He has work to do with Russell, but ultimately, its up to Russell. Dude is a coach killer – why else was Cable calling plays and Tollner the passing coordinator? Hackett would take the game out of Russell’s hands altogether.

  192. myoaklandraiders Says:

All of the recent hirings point towards Cable being on the sidelines during the 2010 season, but this is Al Davis, and who knows what he’s gonna do. Here’s my take on Al and this off-season. http://myoaklandraiders.wordpress.com/
