Chicago must grin and bear it

There are worse things than working for the Raiders.
Like the Bears, for instance.
Check out this column by Rick Morrissey of the Chicago Sun-Times, who can’t believe the Chicago Bears have sunk so low that Hue Jackson turned down a chance to interview to be the offensive coordinator of a team quarterbacked by Jay Cutler and instead went to work coaching JaMarcus Russell.
For all that’s gone wrong with the franchise in recent years, it’s good to know Al Davis still has the ability to close a deal.
Jackson has a monumental task in front of him. Getting Russell on the right path is only part of it. He has two other premium draft picks in Darren McFadden and Darrius Heyward-Bey who have fallen below expectations, Heyward-Bey admittedly only for a single rookie season.
There is plenty to sort out, and not just in terms of personnel. Considering Jackson said he spent most of his time talking to Davis, it’s clear he’s been handed the keys to the offense. Assuming Tom Cable remains on board, something the Raiders simply can’t bring themselves to say in the same way they did with Rob Ryan a year ago, the lines of responsibility must be clear.
Who decides to go for it on fourth-and-1? Is Cable in charge of clock management, or is Jackson?
Who breaks down practice reps for the offense and selects the starters?
Ordnarily, that’s the job of the head coach, with input from the offensive coordinator.
But these are the Raiders, and job descriptions and titles can be extremely vague. You’d think all this was sorted out during the interview process, but the Raiders don’t always operate that way. Davis gets the players and coaches he likes, puts them together, and figures they’ll work it out. Occasional conflict is a natural part of the process.
Considering the problems the Raiders had on offense last year, entrusting it to a new face, presumably one who can bring in some energy and enthusiasm, is a good thing.
However it works out, training camp just got a lot more interesting.

Well, Jackson is not exactly a star. Truth is, nobody worth a crap wants to work here. Jerry likes to throw you guys a bone here and there to keep you coming back. Some no name choosing us over Chicago is not that much of an indictment on Chicago. Like I said, I think it’s more likely that Oakland is an easier place to politic. Jackson could be coming here just to bait Al and make himself look like a hero, trying to do his job while Al gets in the way.

Regarding Jackson picking the Raiders over the Bears, you could do a lot worse than the Raiders gig. Look at the opportunities Gruden (Super Bowl win), Callahan (HC at Nebraska), Norv Turner (took over a 14-2 Chargers team) and Kiffin (Tennessee & USC) received either right after or very shortly after leaving Oakland.

Actually Jerry raises a good point. What will Cable be in charge of? Ok we can say he will work with the line but whatelse is he going to do? For example Cowboys coach Wade Phillips he is in charge of the defense n allows Jason to run the offensive side of the ball, but both Cable n Jackson are offensive minded I don’t know how they can coexist. Being that we’ve been terrible since Cable took over as head coach, any improvements made by the Raiders will obviously be the result of Hue Jackson, because Cable has already proven he just cant bring out the best in his players. So if the team shows signs of getting better but still finish with a losing record,Cable probably will not have is contract renewed. I think we really better pay attention to Hue Jackson because he’s probably our next head coach.

Jackson, who played quarterback at the University of the Pacific in the mid-1980s, has coached quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers, working closely with talents such as Carson Palmer in college and with such personalities as Michael Vick, Chad Ochocinco and T.J. Houshmandzadeh in the NFL.
That Jackson is an African-American who played when black quarterbacks were a novelty likely won’t hurt his chances to bond with Russell, who by all accounts was adversely affected by the deaths of two close uncles last year.

I have heard often and vehemently that no coach worth his salt would come and work for the Raiders n coach with options worth anything would chose the Raiders only coaches with no where to go or on their way somewhere else would come here.

lst off, George I followed Reagan not Clinton. 2ndly, Reagan ran up the biggest deficits EVER seen on the planet, until George I surpassed it! And there is a reason for this. The Republicans spend just like the Demo’s only they cut taxes which means money has to be borrowed to balance the budget. When you borrow that much money, interest rates have to go up, which benefits the big banking establishments, and a larger portion of Federal revenues go to paying that debt and not solving issues such as health care, education etc. Clinton got in and balanced those revenue issues, at which point, George II, taking the blueprint from his dad and Reagan, reversed all that. Those are the facts.

Grin and bear what. The Bears organization is the cheapest in the entire NFL. They disbanded the 85 team that Bill Walsh claimed might have been able to win another Super Bowl or two because they were to cheap to pay the players and let them go to other teams.
