ESPN: Pendergast will coach Raiders DBs

ESPN is reporting that deposed Kansas City defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast will coach the Raiders’ defensive backs in 2010.
Pendergast could either replace incumbent secondary coach Lionel Washington, who is still under contract, or join Washington on staff. Willie Brown, who assists in the secondary and is in charge of “squad development,” told Comcast SportsNet he was retiring.

This is a really nice hire. Clancy Pendergast has 15 years in the league coaching DB’s and was the Defensive Coordinator of the Zona Cardinal team that went to the Super Bowl. Pendergast developed some pretty good DB’s in Zona. He was kept thru the Denny Green and Wishenhunt regimes before being unceremoniously dumped after their Super Bowl loss. KC picked him up immediately as their DC, but now with Romeo Crennell rejoining the other ex-Pats, he is not needed. Besides, he is probably a better DB coach than he is a defensive coordinator. I like this hire. Once again, you all lambaste Davis but he is quietly putting together a pretty exceptional coaching staff.

I’ve always thought Pendergast did a really solid job with his defensive backfields in Arizona and KC. This is definitely a good pickup, especially considering the huge hole Willie Brown left in the coaching staff.

Hopefully Clancy Pendergast joins the staff, he’s experienced but very young (42), he’s known as a creative, out of the box thinker which is good, but sometimes leads him to trouble as he tries too hard to outscheme his opponent, it definitely worked for him during AZ’s playoff run though.
Anyway, I like the hirings of Hue Jackson (44) and Clancy Pendergast (42), both are young and have potential to grow, Mike Waufle was a nice hire as well.
I think it’s great the all three hires come from recent success, Jackson comes after two straight playoff seasons in Baltimore, while Pendergast and Waufle have coached in the last two Super Bowls.

He fantasizes that Al Davis should be all knowing and clairvoyant. If Al picks a player that player be a probowler every season until they retire. He fantasizes that Al Davis should be able with a blind fold find a QB that is a can’t miss talent andthat they should develope through osmosis.
He fantasizes that Mr Davis should have know everything that goes on every minute and make all the right choices without blinking an eye. He fantasizes about the glory days and says to himself where did they go he must have turned against us he no longer wants what he used t which is to win every game every year. SuperBowls should be our calling card and automatic invite if you will.
He fantasizes that if other teams can win the Raiders should also or else the old man obviously doesn’t care anymore. Or else we would be in this years SB the fact that we aren’ is directly attributable to the fact that Mr Davis desn’t care anymore or is purposely undermining the people he hires for their expertise.
He only gets great players just to say he has them he really doesn’t want to win he just wants to be here.

Mr Davis is just an extraordinary man who’s still living a dream. Yes he has accomplished a lot in his life but he still enjoys the ride which some wicked people begrudgingly want to deny him that enjoyment.

Al was very unactive while figuring out the Cable situation, but has any team been more active in assembling a staff so far?
I’m excited about the Hue Jackson hiring. Being that he is a legit NFL OC, no matter what happens here his next job will be OC or better, and we didn’t even have an OC last year, we should get more out of our offense with him at the helm.
We reallly can’t be any worse than we were this year.

I think these guys will be allowed to coach. With Cable staying, things should pick right up where they left off last year. Well for the most part, lol. But from a coaching/scheme standpoint, I think you will see Marshall continue to attack and move guys around.

Couldn’t help but chuckle at the Sapp headlines this morning. Every time he blasted the raiders on NFLN, I thought you ungrateful back stabbbing p.os. But I aleays took everything he said with a grain of salt, because of an article I read after he signed with the Raiders. After he was released by Tampa, he only had two choices, Oakland or Cincy. He obviously picked the Raiders.
Chick Ludwig is the Bengals beat writer for The Dayton Daily News, and also their national corespondant to The Sporting News. The next day he wrote a column, which I’m paraphrasing because it was a long time ago, but basically he relayed a conversation he had with a peer from Tampa. The guy basically told him to count his blessings that Sapp didn’t come to Cincinnati. The guy basically said Sapp was a phony, a fraud and a p.o.s. human being. He was a media whore. When the bright lights and cameras of the national media like BSPN were on he put up this facade of being this fun loving, happy go lucky Teddy Bear of a man. In reality he was anything but. He was a foul, rude, tobacco juice spewing jerk. To quote a player who was publicly feuded with Sapp: “Warren Sapp stinks. His breath stinks. His soul even stinks.” And now you can add he’s an accused woman beater.

I don’t blame Sapp for that season. He was miscast as a 3-4 end. His game was penetration, shooting that center/guard gap at the snap. He actually gave the Raiders a nice season when they moved him back to DT. Remember he and Burgess were the league’s leading sack combo with 16 and 10. He led all interior lineman that year. The thing I didn’t like was his Raider bashing on the NFL network. After they had picked him up, and payed him well, after his release from Tampa. His BS about the phone ringing on the sideline, and Al actually calling plays from the box, during games. I think he was making that shyt up, because that’s what he thought people wanted to hear.

I thought Sapp played well at times, but as we learn with Warren, the guy talks out of both sides of his mouth. He wanted to be the de facto leader for the Raiders, and he wasn’t THAT good, and full of too much BS to pull it off.
Can’t really blame him too much for the 3-4 DE move, IMO though. Another case of Al signing a guy that doesn’t fit into what his coaching staff is trying to do.

No! THese are the types of signings that have put the Raiders in this 7 yr abyss. These two guys are moody players that would instantly take what little oxygen remains at Raider HQ and suffocate an already pathetic organization. Porter and Merriman ARE NOT leaders.

I like the Pendergast hire as well. The guy seemed to have done a nice job in Az, during their super bowl year. He got moved out in KC to make room for the great Midwest NE Patriot reunion tour. To knock an assistant coach in the NFL for getting fired is disingenuous at best. Coaching in professional football is the ultimate transient lifestyle. You’d be hard pressed to find a veteran coach at any level who hasn’t been fire a time or two. By that logic Pittsburgh was stupid to bring back Dick Lebeau as DC, after all, he’d just been fired in Cincinnati. By the way, Congrats Dick. The guy was a hell of a player. Over 50 int’s I believe.

Stallworth plays over who? Not Louis Murphy and Chaz Schilens….and DHBust is at top 10 pick so has to play.
So now we are talking about replacing JLH. I would stick with JLH. He made some nice catches when the QB could get hin the ball. And in 2008, he had some 7 or 8 TDs as a WR and PR.

I agree with SNB. No to Porter, and Merroidman as well. They are both blowhards, whose best days are behind them. I’d take THoward over both of them. Rooting for Merroidman in silver and black would be tough. Never liked Rice in SF, but rooted like hell for him in Oakland. Romanowski was a player you loved to hate in Denver, but I thought he brought back some much needed nastiness to the Raider D for a year or two. I think he purposefully broke Shannon Sharpe’s arm in that MNF game.
As far as Stallworth, I like our young receiving corps, and think they could really grow with Jamarcus, if he can get his shyt together.
What Al needs to find is another Lincoln Kennedy in free agency. Somebody mentioned him earlier. He was considered a bust in Atlanta, but gave the Raiders some good years at RT. They need to strike it rich like that again. A veteran to help solidify this O-line. I don’t know who that player might be, but I hope he’s out there.

Mr. Davis if you would like to win right now we need our best players on the field (hence the stallworth signing). I personally would like to see DHB become a good wideout. I am leery but hopeful. If it will happen realistically IT WILL take time.
I wouldn’t be mad if we picked up a good LB in free agency, although I do get concerned that people I like such as Merriman and Porter are hot heads and would really take away from the culture we are trying to establish. I will repeat the words trying to establish. We are not there yet.
Anyways, maybe If I say prayers tonite there will be an open and fair QB competition this summer. One can hope right?

The offense needs JaDavis to step up because Al Davis is set on playing him. The next position needing upgrade is the O-Line. Receiver is down the list.
Regardless, it would be better to invest seriously in the defense and try to play tough run defense, and on offense run the ball and throw occassionaly off playaction.
That has to be the model. Walk before running…as much as we want to see a highflying passing offense..it just isn’t going to happen with where JaDavis Russell is in his regression

If Davis believed remotely in Gradkowski, he would have elevated Tollner or Hackett to OC and allow them to craft an offense around Gradkowski.
But Davis went and spent coin to get Hue Jackson in the hopes he can turn around JaDavis.
So, in my opinion, since JaDavis is the QB, let’s focus on building the O-Line to run the football and the defense to stop the run and hopefully keep the game close

SnB,I believe if Jamarcus has a tough camp, he will not be afforded the luxary of being our starter. I forsee one of the “gym rats” out working him in camp and flat out winning the job. Maybe, and I say maybe, whoever that starter is will play just well enough with the guys rallying around him to win enough games to keep Jamarcus marinating on the bench. If I am wrong, It will be another long season for Raider nation (again). Wish I could bet behind Jamarcus-He just makes it so darn hard. Don’t you just want to shove a caddle prod in that open mouth and say wake up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think an OC was brought in because one was needed. Not because of Russell or Gradkowski. The play calling was not any better with Grads or Frye so the position needed to be filled. DB and DL coaches also needed to be upgraded, and we may not be done. I think we’ll still see a WR coach and possibly and RBs coach added.

The Raiders did do Walter wrong though. They KNEW he wasn’t in their plans…drafted JaDavis, brought in Culpepper, McCown, Gradkowski, Frye and Garcia and insisted on keeping him on the roster even as he asked for a release.
Kept him on the roster through OTAs and cut him the day before training camp started.
That’s pretty tough. But then again, the Raiders paid him to do nothing

Tim Brown is not a first ballot HOF. He was a great Raider but not one of the greatest wide receivers. He put up great stats on bad/medicore teams but for the 3 year run with Gruden and a couple of playoff appearnces in LA.
When Rice came to the Raiders it was obvious to me he was jealous. He was no longer the first option. In fact, he was the third option behind Rice and Charlie Garner. Check out his SB stats v. the Bucs. 2 catches for less than 20 yards. Who were the first 2 options: Rice and Porter. I recall during the 3 year run he was whining about not getting the ball. They’re playing the Chiefs and Gannon caves in and completes something like 13 passes. Raiders lose to Chiefs. So much for team first.
Get over it. He is not the greatest wide receiver in Raiders history. He wasn’t better than Freddie B, Branch or Rice. In fact, Warren Wells was more dangerous in his short stay. In addition, I’m missing another Raider great from the 60s-was it Art Powell. Stabler, Guy, Plunkett, Wiz, to name a few, deserve to be there before Timmy.

His receiving corp is going to be more solid, the same offensive system is going to be in place, altho Russell will have his 4th or 5th different play caller in his lst 25 starts. Peyton Manning has had one playcaller in his lst 200 starts. Think THAT makes a difference?

Wishfull thinking but unfortunately not true. I ran into Tom Cable at a restaurant in Alameda of Friday and suggested Troy Smith RFA, Ravens. He said “we got JaMarcus and he’s going to be our guy. His old coach is coming and he’ll be OK”. I said I hope that’s the case but he’s got a ton of bad habits to fix. He went on to infer that he has some inside information on Troy Smith and that option may no longer be an option. So, that certainly doesn’t sound like AD has had it with JaBustus.
