Pendergast jumps to Cal

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, February 19th, 2010 at 11:10 am in Oakland Raiders.

Clancy Pendergast, who was fired as defensive coordinator with the Arizona Cardinals and Kansas City Chiefs in the past two years, will leave the Raiders after less than a month and to be defensive coordinator under Jeff Tedford at Cal, beat writer Steve Corkran confirms.

Pendergast was hired by the Raiders Feb. 8 as a defensive assistant. Although the club never specified Pendergast’s responsibility, he was coaching defensive backs along with Lionel Washington.

The situation is the reverse of one which occurred last year when Jim Michalczik, hired by Steve Sarkisian coach the offensive line at the University of Washington, instead left the Huskies to take over as line coach with the Raiders under Tom Cable.

    LOL.

So we are going to lowball Gradkowski with a league minimum deal (do you really expect any offers from other teams), and he’s going to be our starter next year?

    LMFAO!

So he starts next year and takes us to the playoffs. Does he hold out for more coin?

Cmon guys. If Gradkowski was a QB capable of ending this teams playoff drought, I doubt we play the games your suggesting. If we are playing those games, Gradkowski can’t be viewed as anything more than a backup.

  • SteveAlford21

Jhill, I disagree on the LBs. You have to have Scott on the weakside to let him have better passrush opportunities in obvious passing downs and put either Morrison or Howard on the strongside where they have safety help. I know that Scott is new to LB, but I trust him on an island more than Morrison and Howard already. The kid has better football instincts than both of them combined.

  • DMAC

    Urlacher, anyone???????

  • lefty12

    Starter by default.

  • http://atm Raider O

    O Mock Draft 6.0:

    1- LB McClain
2- RT T Williams if he falls, or Kyle Calloway
    3- DT Cam Thomas
    3- DE Austen Lane
    4- LB Micah Johnson
    5- WR/ KR Jacoby Ford
    5- CB Walter Thurmond
    7- Best FB available

What do you think Nation? Should we draft Leroy Vann who had 11 TDs returns in 2 years, or jacoby Ford who can play WR also, and may run a sub 4.25.

  • RaiderRockstar

who said anything about a lowball offer Jhill?

    Jerry Mac says:

A second-round draft pick tender would bring Gradkowski $1.759 million _ or the Raiders could simply lock him up for similar money over two seasons.

  • SteveAlford21

Have you heard of this guy named Al Davis before? Yes, of COURSE we lowball Gradkowski. After no one puts out an offer sheet for the picks plus a salary (or puts out a modest offer that we match), then we go ahead and sign Bruce for just a bit more than the least that he’ll take with the promise of a fair competition for the starting job and an opportunity to lead the team based on his strength and ability. Bruce is the perfect guy with which to play that kind of childish game… he’s the kind of guy who will play at a low salary just to have the chance to be great. In other words, he’s the kind of guy you wish all your players were like.

  • jhill

I think thats why you’re trying to lead your general comment to now be specific toward QB’s. funny how you do that so often

    ——————————————————-

    LOL RRS.

    Whatever dude.

I thought the topic all along was the QB position. You bringing out WR examples led me to refocus your argument. Of course in lieu of you actually coming up with a relevant example you jab me in the ribs, lol.

  • DMAC

    I wouldn’t draft either.
We’ll have Nick Miller ready in week 16.

  • jhill

    RRS …

Let me know when we slap a 2nd rd tender on him.

  • lefty12

O,do you actually think we will take a KR after sitting on Miller all of last year?

  • SteveAlford21

RRS, $1.8 million IS lowball for a “starter” at QB. So yes, we lowball him, but after no one gives us the pick for his rights, we offer him a contract of 5-10% over what the tender amount requirement would’ve been. Bruce happily signs it and tries to become the starter.

  • jhill

    Steve,

I’ll take the exact same things Marshall was doing to end the season with a new MLB, Warren as a backup, and Routt playing exclusively on the outside.

Scott at various LB positions doing various things. Including putting his hand down as a DE on certain downs.

Warren in year 11 needs to be a backup.

I like Howards speed and ability to cover better than Morrison.

And Routt in the slot is a disaster. But he’s pretty good when playing on the outside.

  • http://atm Raider O

    Lefty,

Maybe. He is a late RD pick (5th), and he runs a sub 4.25! Al loves speed.

  • lefty12

Every NFL team LOVES speed.I’d rather get some beef on the Oline where we need starters and backups.

  • http://atm Raider O

The Miller issue last season was crazy. Let a guy take a roster spot all season, and he didn’t play at all due to injury. To make things even worse, he is an unproven rookie!

  • jhill

Have you heard of this guy named Al Davis before?

    ——————————————————-

    Who?

  • jhill

To make things even worse, he is an unproven rookie!

    ——————————————————-

But he looked good in camp O! Even designed a couple of plays for him, lol!

  • jhill

I have to say I am looking forward to getting Miller on the field. He’s going to be our Wes Welker and finally allow us to get that head case JLH outta here!

  • http://atm Raider O

I Agree lefty. we need BEEF. I think we should cut Warren and Walker since it’s uncapped, and sign the best G & C in FA. We save 12 mil in salary that we can spend ok the new FAs. I think we need some solid Vets on offense more than we need young talent. IMO

  • Ghost to the Post

Good morning Nation, Urlacher won’t make it through the season.

  • http://atm Raider O

    Ok: on*

    LMAO @ “our Wes Welker”

  • jhill

    ——————————————————-

Steve, does Murphy falling down on this first play mean anything?

  • RaiderRockstar

Russell is on the roster, and Bruce isn’t. If Bruce Gradkowski were as important as you and some other tend to make out, then why haven’t we resigned him?

    ***

that was your original comment Jhill. then you revised it to be more specific after I listed examples of other talented RFA’s on the market

with the above comment, it’s easy to assume you’re talking about any restricted free agent …

  • http://atm Raider O

He is White, Short, and Fast. He is our Wes Welker!

    Word!

  • jhill

    Steve,

How about Murphy and JLH higgins crashing into each other or the Oline breakdowns in the video?

What was the last thing prime said, lol?

  • lefty12

It seems pretty obvious the team is being built with young talent for the long haul. Why change now and go back to the days of overpaying for other teams cast-offs?A FA here or there,ie. Ellis,is ok but I’d rather build a good line with young guys who will be around awhile.

  • SteveAlford21

Watch that play again. He jumped as high as he could and that ball was still five feet over his head. He fell down on the landing. I’m not exaggerating. Watch it again. Here, I’ll put up the link so everyone else can see that I’m using it as evidence. First play shown on the highlights: JaMarcus overthrowing the intended receiver BIGTIME.

  • RaiderRockstar

$1.8 million IS lowball for a “starter” at QB.

    ***

Steve, nobody is going to give Bruce starter money. Not even Al Davis. 4 solid starts is a good place to begin, but you’re always afraid of turning up the next Scott Mitchell. All Bruce is asking for is a chance to compete for the starting job and I think thats all we’ll offer him when contract talks begin or the tag is issued …

  • jhill

    RRS,

My comment referenced 2 QBs man. The discussion was about QBs, and in particular a starting QB who the coach said would have taken us to the playoffs.

    But …

I’ll concede your point so we can just move on.

  • SteveAlford21

I would like EVERYONE to watch that clip and comment on it. Do you not see that the receiver hit the ground AFTER the pass was past him? He leaped and couldn’t get to it, the ball sailed over outstretched hands and directly do a defender. He did NOT fall down before the ball got there or even while the ball was there. It was already gone before he hit the turf.

  • TrueRaider

There are clearly few players that fit the Raiders philosophy in this free agency. Some might command ridiculous money we can’t afford like Hampton, Peppers, Dansby but there are few that can fit. Personally, there is one who can solidify this offense by 50%. That guy is Center Kevin Mawae, a true leader for the offense who can help any QB playing along with this horrible offensive line.

A line up with him is an instance upgrade over what we have now.

    LT Henderson
    LG Gallery
    C Mawae
    RG Walker
    RT Rookie or Barnes

  • jhill

Who was the intended receiver Steve?

Cromartie picked it off, and Murphy fell down right in front of Cromartie. Do you NOT see Murphy get up off the ground right in front of Cromartie?

Are you assuming that he was throwing it to Miller?

  • RaiderRockstar

Bruce Gradkowski has shown more promise in 4 starts than Russell has in 25.

nobody is saying he’s going to become a 10 year starter in Oakland or that he has Pro Bowl potential.

you pay the players that produce. you keep those guys in the fold. When given the opportunity Bruce played better at the QB position than anybody else who lined up under center for the Oakland Raiders in 2009. that is what it boils down to IMO

  • jhill

    18 Steve …

18! Cromartie was guarding Murphy and the ball dropped right in his hands with Murphy rolling around on the ground in front of him.

2nd question. Why were 2 receivers in the same area?

  • SteveAlford21

RRS, I agree with you completely about Bruce. I was merely stating that for the purposes of him competing for the starter job with a pretty damned good chance of getting it, that’s low money. No one in the league will give him starter money because he’s not good enough to beat out the #1 QB on any team’s roster… except in Oakland. Personally, I hope he gets a contract full of performance-based incentives and ends up making more than JR this year. I know that’s highly unlikely, but it’s good to imagine a hard-working guy who is loved by all his teammates coming out ahead.

  • jhill

    I’ll take a Pro Bowl C.

    No argument here.

  • http://atm Raider O

You make a great point lefty. The issue is Mr Davis is about 4-5 years late on doing this, Fans are giving up, and home games are being Blocked. We need fans for revenues, so I think we need some results next season. We have a lot of picks, it’s an uncapped year, so we need to use this off season wisely. Release the big contract with no production, sign Seymour, sign the best G & C in FA who had a Solid career or PB talent

  • RaiderRockstar

Personally, I hope he gets a contract full of performance-based incentives and ends up making more than JR this year. I know that’s highly unlikely, but it’s good to imagine a hard-working guy who is loved by all his teammates coming out ahead.

    ***

David vs. Goliath all over again. haha

  • SteveAlford21

Jhill: Actually, I WAS looking at Zach. Lol @ me. Damn, I need some sleep. I’m going to head off now. Great discussions everyone and I thoroughly enjoyed talking to you all. Have a great day, Raider Fans.

  • RaiderRockstar

    later Steve!

  • lefty12

Cromardie was 5 yards behind the receiver.

  • jhill

    What receiver, Lefty?

Cromartied was checking Murphy, who fell down in front of him. If Murphy doesn’t fall down, that pass goes right to him.

I guess your saying that he overthrew Miller?

  • jhill

Every highlight I look at takes me back to the defense.

Some of the UNTOUCHED plays we were giving up are just not going to cut it.

Defense in rd 1 and 2!

  • lefty12

sorry Jhill.actually, after looking again, that was the 1st time i noticed 18 on the ground.I always looked at Miller, who it seemed ,the pass was intended for.

  • RaiderRockstar

25 starts made JaMarcus look like a bust, not 1 or 2 passes …

  • jhill

It’s all good Lefty. Factor in the last play on that video and Primes comments, and let’s just say it wasn’t a good game by the beloved Murphy.

And we only lost by a TD and folks want to blame it on the QB? I don’t see how Bruce at QB helps Muphy stay on his feet or not run over JLH, lol.

  • lefty12

While the majority of people-not just Raider fans, but league people who work in the NFL for a living-believe he is a bust ,he will be given more than every opportunity to be the starter next year.Too much money was invested in him.

  • jhill

    Sorry RRS,

I thought we were talking about last year’s start for Russell. Plenty of video to go over. I know you can’t view it at work, but I think if there was something there, your fellow Russell bashers would be trying to point it out, lol.

All we’ve gotten so far is a couple of “my bads”.

  • lefty12

I still don’t believe that pass was intended for Murphy given the fact that we all know Russell always focuses on his TEs.
