Cable says he wasn’t worried

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, February 28th, 2010 at 1:07 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders coach Tom Cable was available to media attending the NFL scouting combine, which, unfortunately, did not include any reporters who regularly cover the Raiders.

According to NFL.com Cable said he simply kept coming to work every day _ much as he said he would at the close of the season.

According to Profootball.talk.com, Cable was non-committal about the future of wide receiver Javon Walker.

Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports on his Twitter account that Cable said quarterback would be an “open competition.”

Maiocco was one of two Northern California representatives at the combine, the Sacramento Bee being the other. Both sent writers beat writers who cover the 49ers.

    Raider O,

I don’t think $1 million is too much to pay for a guy who’s almost certainly going to be our starting QB for the majority if not the entire season.

Who cares where he was drafted? Tom Brady went in the 6th. I believe Gannon went even later.

His arm isn’t in JaMarcus’ league but it’s adequate. Chad Pennington has had an OK career with a weaker arm. Ditto that for Jeff Garcia. Gannon had an average arm. Gradkowski completes more throws downfield than JaMarcus too because Gradkowski knows when to pull the trigger and puts the ball in the vicinity of his receiver.

I’d rather have a QB that moves around “too much” (which I don’t even think is true of Gradkowski) than a statue (Collins, Walter) or a guy with ZERO pocket presence who gets hit with 2 sack/fumbles per game (JaMarcus).

The durability issue is a legitimate concern I suppose. But any player can get injured at any time. Brady sustained a season-ending injury during the first half of the first game in 2008. It’s not like Gradkowski was in and out of the lineup a bunch of times because he kept getting hurt. It was one hit that happened to injure him. And he was talking about getting back out there within a couple of weeks of the injury.

Sounds like he has a pretty good idea who the competitors are.

Bruce and Jamarcus, it will be an entertaining preseason.

My source said this stuff, said the part about the drinking because he is real tight with the males in Russell’s family. His mom said the part about Hue Jackson and getting yanked in 4 games if no improvement and last year in Oak if no improvement.

My source is friend of the family who is a high school classmate of Russell’s mom. He is welcomed at the Russell house in Mobile anytime.

    Chris,

Last year was Garbagekowski’s 4th year, and he didn’t play well before this year. His best QB rating was 65.9 at his best season in TB.

He played 2 good games in his 4th year in the NFL!!! Big Deal!!

  • RaiderLen

    Open Competition…

Yes! This is a cattle prod to the ass of JaMarcus.

I hope He rises to the challenge and makes a statement with his performance that will put to rest all of the debate.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

If your goal is to win a few games, Gradkowski is your guy. If your long-term goal is winning championships….you have to hope JaDavis pulls through or get someone else to groom.

Guys like Gradkowski don’t win championships….only exception was Brad Johnson….and that was only because the Jon Gruden knew the Raider playbook and Callahan did nothing to adjust.

  • RaiderLen

    504…Thanks

  • RaiderLen

SnB, I agree. JaMarcus has to get it done, or another QB outside of the current roster will have to be brought in.

I think Losman could be a wild card however.

  • Frank YoooooooLLL

Hey I’m watching usa vs canada hockey, they called a penalty, and it was against the Raiders!

  • http://blstb.msn.com/i/55/90A2853B6CFBCC2AFC987BB18B832.jpg vegas raider

Brad Johnson played in a lot of playoff games, with I think 3 different teams.

  • http://atm Raider O

Bruce had a QB rating of 80.6. (games started 4) played 3.
JR’s QB rating in 08 was 77.1 (Games started 15)

  • RaiderLen

    How ya doin O

With a better O line, and more experienced WR’s both QB’s ratings improve.

    Right?

  • http://atm Raider O

    So,

-GarbageKowski had a QB rating of 80.6 in 3 full games played in his 4th year in the NFL.
-JR had a QB rating if 77.1 in 15 games in his 2nd season in the NFL, and it was considered his rookie season.

  • http://atm Raider O

    Len,

It helps, but the QBs have to put in work and have talent.

Garbagekowski has no talent, and JR doesn’t have the required Work ethic for that position.
I like the idea of J Campbell if he becomes a FA, but only with a 1 year deal & the Raiders have the right for an extension without the franchise tag.

  • DKnight007

We have a hockey game now….2-1!

Anyways….we should all call up Raider headquarters asked to be transferred to Cables voice mail, the old mans voice mail, or herreras vm, and leave messages saying

“Sooooo how are you geniuses gonna screw this years draft up? Please let us know, so we can not even bother tuning in on draft day!” LOL

  • jhill

But Raiders coach Tom Cable insisted Sunday that isn’t his team’s approach, and he even laughed as a reporter questioned him about it.

“How about the best player? Let’s talk that way,” Cable said. “… We need to get better in some areas, and so at this thing (the combine), find who you think the best players are, whether they jump the highest or run the fastest. That shouldn’t make a damn difference. He has to be able to play football good enough for us to become a championship team.”

    Priesttj,

I don’t think Gerard Warren would be a starter on any other NFL team.

You criticized my opinion that guys like Jerry Porter, Tyler Brayton, Langston Walker and Justin Fargas are not starters. I stand by all that. Just because Jacksonville was equally as stupid doesn’t invalidate anything. By the way, you forgot to add Ron Curry and Terdell Sands. I did’t think those two were starting caliber either.

I go to the blog to discuss Raider football and discuss its shortcomings. I don’t know why you bother. The sun is always shining with you. THe team is always perfect. What’t to discuss?

and yes…BJ Raji would have been an infinitely better draft pick than Darius Heyward-Bey!

So much for Bruce Campbell and Pierr Paul, according to our coach.

Suh, McCoy, Okung, Davis, Morgan, McClain, Haden, or Bryant.

What about Pac-Man Jones for NickleBack?

  • RaiderLen

Raider O, JaMarcus has talent. Work ethic can be taught/learned with maturity.

J Campbell ehh, ok. But to think the Raiders can sign him for a song, probably wishfull thinking.

Gradkowski, we all know will give maximum effort and work ethic. But as SnB has said, and I agrree, His ability will only take us so far.

If Grads had supperior talent and orginizational structure around Him….Mabey we catch lightning in a bottle.

Much work yet to be done.

Tom Cable was asked about the offensive linemen in last year’s draft when he talked about the Cadillacs. The question Cable was responding to here was the idea that he would draft Jacoby Ford. Now had he went with the Corvette line, then I’d be concerned.

  • Nnamdi21

I’ve said “with the 8th overall pick the Oakland Raiders select out of USC, Safety Taylor Mays” half jokingly and said they may bump Tyvon to CB.

    Don’t think they’ll take a DE.

They’ve done well in recent history getting production out of guys they find or draft.

    Burgess had a good run.

    Chris Clemmons

    Trevor Scott

and even rookie Matt Shaughnessy showed some signs of life last year.

    Plus, you’ve got Richard Seymour.

1st round DE’s for the most part, have’nt really lit things up for their teams high picks.

We might take Joe Hayden at 8 and actually, if we had, to, I’m ok with him.

Not our typical 6-2, 200 lb track star, but a good football player who would support the run D and make an excellent Nickle who would graduate to take Chris Johnson’s out side slot evenatually.

Who do I want for our 8th?

    An O line man.

    Nnamdi21,

O line is the weakest position group on this team.

We need serious upgrades at 3 positions.

The DL and LB’s are a conceren, but we did draft Shaughnesy, signed Dez Bryant as a Rookie FA, and traded for Seymoure.

Nixon and Norris may be commers at LB.

    O line, O line, Oline.

We need more Zach Miller, Matt Shaughnessy, Trevor Scott and Tyvon Branch type picks.

Save us from uber workout warrior overhyped types.

The ideal situation would be for Davis to trade out of the 1st round for at least 1 other pick.

Then all of the hyped up talent and workout warriors are gone. Then Davis will have to rely on pure scouting and not on media clips.

I still think it Bruce Campbell folks

You tell me….from the past 7 year trend of drafting and also from the dumb stuff that happened last year in the 1st two rounds of the draft.

The old delusional man Al loves inexperienced height, weight, speed guys FIRST and proven productive tough instinctive football players SECOND.

  • RaiderLen

The whole idea of the old man drafting stricktly by 40 times and Body Composition is BS.

However it has been his habit in the recent past to draft fast running DB’s.

But my recolection is that all of those DB’s drafted HAD 1st or 2nd round grades.

My biggest critisism is not addressing the lines.

Because Russell threw the ball 80 yards on his knees and had the cannon arm. Hence no Calvin Johnson

We took DMAC over Gholston. Because DMAC had the excellent 40x and Davis rarely drafts linebackers in the 1st round

DHB was an inexplicably bad pick…even by Davis standards. If speed was the issue, why not Maclin…because Maclin wasn’t tall enough….even though he had more production.

DHB does = Bruce Campbell. OT is a need and on the radar….Campbell goes lights out on athleticism but only has 17 starts and average work….Davis believes you can teach the other stuff…but you can’t teach speed and athleticism.

Every Raider fan has a right to be concerned about Campbell’s combine….and if Taylor Mays similiarly goes lights out….don’t even bother watching the 1st day of the draft unless you want to get upset.
