Cable at the combine
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, March 1st, 2010 at 7:19 am in Oakland Raiders.
Managed to get a transcript of the Q&A session with Raiders coach Tom Cable at the Indianapolis scouting combine Sunday. So here it, is, albeit a day late:
Q: What is the Raiders QB situation for 2010?
Cable: You know, getting ready to start the offseason and get to OTAs and minicamp and let the job be competed for. That’s where we’re at in terms of our starting quarterback.
Q: Who will competition include?
Cable: All those guys so long as we can get some them re-signed and see if we add anybody to the mix.
Q: Is QB a position you might look for in the draft?
Cable: For us, we have to look at a number of things, so I don’t think you would discount that or any other position.
Q: What are some other positions of need?
Cable: For us right now probably working a little bit on the line of scrimmage and the secondary and some things like that. And really come away from this combine and knowing what’s going to be available, so you can really put your finger on some of that.
Q: Offensive or defensive line?
Cable: I think both. You always have to look at it and see where you want to be in those two areas.
Q: Is offensive tackle a position you would’ve wanted to fill last year?
Cable: The way Mario Henderson played to close out 2008, we felt good pretty good about it. As long as we can continue to get him better and improve him, which he’s done, and we’ll make the right decisions that way.
Q: What was the impact of Richard Seymour?
Cable: I think he was everything I thought he’d be. I heard a lot about who he is as a person and what he’d bring to the locker room and the practice field and preparation and all those things. To me, he accomplished everything I heard about him. The thing I probably was most excited about was how much he impacted our young players on the football team. He’s been in the NFL for some time and he knows how to prepare. How to get himself ready, how to take notes. The time it takes, day to day, week to week, as you go through the season. And, ultimately, how to take care of your body. So I think there were a lot of good lessons learned there from a bunch of young football players.
Q: Is there some blueprint that can used comparing JaMarcus Russell to Vince Young?
Cable: I have not put a lot of thought on this at this point. Right now the focus has been on getting this evaluated and getting ready for free agency and the draft. JaMarcus is working and doing things he should be doing right now. And he’ll get himself prepared to compete for the job. That’s the only way to look at it.
Q: How important is Seymour’s leadership on young players?
Cable: Very important. Both he and Greg Ellis brought a lot of that to our football team. And guys like Charlie Frye and Bruce Gradkowski I thought brought some of that to the other side of the ball. I don’t think you can ever have a team that can turn it around and start building something without that type of leadership in the locker room.
Q: Are you hoping Seymour extends his deal beyond the one year?
Cable: I certainly you hope so. We’ll continue to work on all that. And I think Richard wants to be there and get his family settled. Those are the things important to him.
Q: Have Darren McFadden’s injuries kept him from taking lead role?
Cable: I think so. Every time he’s gotten himself going and had pretty good production something has happened to either take him out of that game or not let him be as big a part in the next one. He’s a fine player and as he’s able to stay healthy for longer periods of time you’ll see more for what we all hope.
Q: Reaction to possibility overtime rules will be changed for playoffs
Cable: Well, you know, for me, having spent quite a while in college football, that’s kind of the dynamic way to play overtime. I think both teams getting a fair shot at it and put into a stress environment in terms of a short field and all of those things and yet play off each other and answer what the other team did. I think that brings more strategy into this whole thing. Where they go with it and how they get there will be talked about and decided. I’m comfortable with it. I think there needs to be something, so we’ll see what they’re doing.
Q: What if it’s just used in playoffs and not regular season?
Cable: Well, again, we’ll see. Hopefully we’re one of the teams in playoffs that has to worry about that sort of thing.
Q: Do you expect Javon Walker to be on the team? And why haven’t you been able to get him going?
Cable: To answer the second question first, really we’ve had the emergence of those young players and really Louis Murphy, Chaz Schilens and Johnnie Lee Higgins give us something. Darius Heyward-Bey gets hurt and misses a good chunk of the season. So I think it’s there development and trying to bring that group along. Will he be there next year? We’ll see.
Q: Compare having one guy to get all offseason reps at QB, opposed to competition?
Cable: To me, that would help our football team right now to get into more of that competition. As we said the last time we met as a football team, the next step for us as a team is going to be the biggest, it’s going to be the hardest. We’re competitive now, but you got to win more and win the games you’re supposed to win. And I think competition helps you do those kinds of things. I’m all for having guys going at it and battle for the job.
Q: Was your job security ever a question for you?
Cable: No, it wasn’t. We went through the evaluation process. As I was told, ‘You’re under contract and we need to talk about everything.’ That’s what we did. There was a lot of speculation but the whole time I went to work every day and did what I knew I needed to do to get ready for the evaluation, get ready for the Senior Bowl,
ready for all those things that were coming up.
Q: When were you told you were coming back?
Cable: I was never told I wasn’t. . . . That’s the one misnomer. There was a lot of speculation. But every day I went to work and every day I got ready for the routine, the self-scout and all the things you’d normally do. So for me sitting back, I wondered what all the fuss was about. I just going to work every day.
Q: How do you cope with all the distractions?
Cable: I don’t have that much distraction. I have a wonderful wife and kids and good family. Good coaching staff. Players I like to be around and coach all the time. So I really don’t worry about things I can’t control. Those are things that are immediate in my life that I can take care of.
Q: Are you taking part in negotiating contracts?
Cable: We’ve all kind of been involved in it, meaning the owner and I and other people in the building. I think that’s the way it’s always been done. It was that way last year and again this year. For me, it’s nothing new.
Q: Were you in the room when Sebastian Janikowski’s contract was being negotiated?
Cable: Some of that, yes.
Q: Nnamdi Asomugha has been rumored as a player on the trade block. Are you open to trading your best player?
Cable: We get a ton of calls about a lot of players on our football team all the time. In fact, before I came in here I was on the phone about something. To me, that stuff happens in the NFL. It’s going to happen all the time, so people call you and you listen. And see if anything interests you or doesn’t interest you. Sometimes it’s crazier than you think what they’re talking about. So you just take the call and you listen.
Q: Do you want to tell us who you were talking to?
Cable: No.
Q: Are you sure?
Cable: No.
Q: Mike Iupati, guard from Idaho, and his chance to be a strong player?
Cable: Absolutely. First of all, he’s an Idaho Vandal, so I’m biased. He’s a terrific player. I think his future will be very bright. He’s going to have to transition from that level to the NFL. But he showed he has the ability to do that at the Senior Bowl. I’m very proud of him. I’m pulling for him to succeed, big time.
Q: How much do the Raiders place on the combine. Perception is biggest-fastest-strongest is going to be a Raider?
Cable: I don’t know. How about the best player? Let’s talk that way. We need to get better in some areas, so you got to look at this thing and find who you think the best players are, rather than they jump the highest or run the fastest. It shouldn’t make a damn difference. He has to be able to play football good enough for you to become a championship team. At the end of the day, that’s what really counts. A lot of guys who run fast can’t play dead. For me, get the best players targeted
and go back and sit down as a group, collectively put that together, and start your process.
Q: Given that, how did Darius Heyward-Bey’s first season go?
Cable: I think there were some good and some things that were probably disappointing. The injury, to me, is disappointing. I think the amount of pressure that was put on that kid from all angles, the scrutiny came the day he was picked, probably unfair but, hey, this is the NFL and that’s what it is. But with his work ethic and his character, he’s going to be what he’s supposed to be. You’ll be excited to write about him soon.
Q: Have you made your RFA tenders?
Cable: We’ll do that when we get back.
Q: How would you assess the performance of Michael Huff?
Cable: I’ve always felt Michael was on the cusp of his breakthrough. He had it this year. Lionel Washington and those guys on defense really got him ready to go, and I thought he was outstanding the whole year from the first game all the way through the last one. It was definitely a breakthrough for Michael, and hopefully that’s just the sign of where he’s at as a player now and we can get a lot of big play from him.
Q: Do you still need to weed out guys who `don’t get it’?
Cable: I think as I stood up here last year we talked about some of those things. I think we’ve done that. We kind of go to work for a common theme now, which is to succeed. And I don’t think you can do that if you have a bunch of knuckleheads. I feel good about our team. What I want to do is improve our team. What I want to do is improve our team and it’s talent level and take the younger players and develop them even further than we have at this point. So I like where the team’s at that way. For us, again, the next step is becoming a winning team with some consistency. And that’ll be the hardest step.
Q: What does team need to do to improve?
Cable: All of the above. The first thing we need to do is get better at taking care of the football offensively and getting turnovers defensively. Then, we got to throw the ball on offense and stop the big play on defense. You can put your hands on those things. You can say that’s something we have to start from Day 1 and start preaching – not that we haven’t. But it’s got to become so focused here – not take anything away from anything else. But those areas, if we can really make some inroads there, we’ll be a pretty good team.
Q: What’s the risk of taking a player like Mike Mitchell who wasn’t invited to the combine? And were you concerned about public perception?
Cable: No. Look, what I’ve been through, that doesn’t matter to me that way. If people watch Mike play the last six weeks, they’d say, ‘That’s why they took him.’ He was sensational. He impacted the last six games as much as anybody on our defense in a number of ways because he can play in all your packages. So to worry about that now, not at all. The bottom line is to find the best players whether they’re under a rock or at the combine. It doesn’t matter.
Q: Was there a feeling somebody else was going to get Mitchell?
Cable: We knew teams knew about him. We knew there were three other teams that liked Mike like we did. So it was going to be a matter of who came up first in the draft.
Q: With all you gave up to acquire Seymour, was the value there?
Cable: I think so, if you look at what he brought to our team . . . the opponents’ ability, or lack thereof, to run at him, run on that side of the line of scrimmage. I’d like to see a little more pass rush out of him, which he’ll probably be the first to tell you that. But with all those things considered, yeah, definitely. If you can get that out of a first-round pick, you’ve done pretty well.
Q: Has Russell given you assurances he’ll take care of himself in the offseason?
Cable: It’s really not about him giving assurances. It’s simply, he has a job to do like everybody else. Do your job and do it in a matter helps this team succeed. We have talked a couple of times. I know he’s working and I’m anxious for the offseason program to get started so we can see him all the time.

Than everything fell apart, and their are many reasons why and plenty of blame to go around. Surely the line, and the inexperienced WR’s were awful. Cable’s play-calling week 3 and against the Jets were especially bad at the beginning of games. AND on some occasions when blocking would hope, Running backs would fumble, WR’s would drop passes, and QB’s would miss throws.
They had to bring in Bruce to triage the situation, and he did a bang-up job, especially considering the circumstances. Even Russell looked better after the few games, and certainly benefitted from watching a pro’s pro for once in his career.

If Kiffin and company were still in place, or whoever was the coach Jamarcus’ rookie year, I think you will see a lot more progression.
Russell was simply asked by Cable’s gameplan to do something that he was not ready to do. Especially with 2 rookie WRs, and a shotty Oline. I understand the concerns his teammates have, but I don’t think his progression from shotgun spread offense QB to NFL QB was far enough along for Cable’s plan. Should have been heavy run, and play action off that. Shorter routes like we talked about earlier.
*******************************
Ahem…(good morning)
Jamarcus’ best moments as a pro come under Cable at the end of 2008. I thought Cable’s gameplan of Jamarcus in Denver in 2008 ( 10-11, 150 yards, 2 TD’s) is exactly what you are calling for. Kiffin had Russell throwing 20+ passes his last game against the Chargers.
Cable tried to grow Jamarcus in the offseason going in to 2009, and the first week, it worked well. The 20 points at home opening night, was the most points Jamarcus would lead our offense to all year in a game.
Than everything fell apart, but I don’t think you can blame it on being too aggressive in play-calling. We lost games by 30 points, and threw under 20 passes. We threw the second least amount of passes in the NFL last year. We just couldn’t get any first downs and offensively we were as bad as any Raider team, maybe ever. It gave 2006 a run for the money.
They had to bring in Bruce to triage the situation, and he did a bang-up job, especially considering the circumstances. Even Russell looked better after the few games, and certainly benefitted from watching a pro’s pro for once in his career.
Bruce needs to be on the roster for 2010, for no other reason than to push Jamarcus. If truly an open competition this camp and preseason, which I think it will be, it will be a close one.
Bruce, we know, will fight tooth and nail in the preseason, and show his “fire”. Russell will try to show off his arm and unleash some rockets down the field.
Get your popcorn ready.

Good to hear some tough talk.
Jamarcus deserves a lot of blame, but if the Raiders would have put their foot down from day one, we might not even be here.

Jhill: don’t worry bro. They’ll be back
March 1st, 2010 at 7:53 am
Jhill, You brought up a good point yesterday that I never really considered. JRuss could have had an emotional digression based on the loss of his uncle.
All of us know how devastating it could be to lose someone. JRuss may have needed time from football becuase he was “frozen”. I have been in that position after a moajor loss. I for one have bagged on him, I hope he does get better, but we have no idea what his emotional state was and if he has recovered….

“Yahoo!’s Jason Cole reports that Bryant was viewed as “consistently irresponsible” in Stillwater with one source saying, “I wouldn’t draft that kid unless I had someone to wake him up in the morning to get to meetings, someone to wake him up for practice and someone to wake him up for games.”

JR haters always come up with garbage like this. A scholarship suggests to me that JR is getting something that he doesn’t deserve and thats BS. What No. 1 pick in the history of the league hasn’t been given every chance to succeed? And the guy had a promising 1st year as a starter two years ago. Is he really supposed to lose his “scholarship” because he regressed behind a bad OL, no running game and two rookie wideouts? Al knows the deal. I’d say JR’s “scholarship” is alive and well.

A little hyper this morning are we?
When Bruce had to come in and mop up Jamarcus’ mess in the Jets and KC game, it lowered his QB rating for the year.
His rating in the games he started were in the mid 80’s. And his “80.6″ QB rating was the 2nd highest last year amongst all QB’s taken the year he was drafted, just barely behind VY.
Just saying.

Interesting thought. But if Bruce is going to the HOF like you say, why didn’t we score one point in either of his mop-up appearances? In fact, those are the only two games where you can accurately say they were playing with the same supporting cast.

“It’s not necessarily changing the whole (throwing) motion, it’s where I’m holding the ball,” Tebow said. “I’m holding it higher and not having that loop in there. My release point isn’t different at all.”
“I talked to a lot of different quarterbacks coaches and a lot of people who said ‘Wait till after the draft (to change the motion),’” Tebow said. “But I’m not afraid of what anybody thinks. If I need to change it, then I’m going to do it now.”
Tebow isn’t changing everything.
He insists the only real difference is that he’s shortened his throwing motion to get rid of the ball quicker – and he hopes get himself back on the podium come April 22.
“I know wherever I go and whoever drafts me is going to get someone who gives everything to the team, who leaves everything on the field every day,” he said. “My dream is to be an NFL quarterback and I’m going to do whatever it takes to do that. If I’m asked to do something else, I’ll do it, because it’s always team first.”

Tebow knows that by changing certain aspects of his game now, it may drop his draft stock if he doesn’t have it down 100% by the 03/17 Pro Day.
…but he also knows that he’s giving himself a 5 or 6 month head start on perfecting his game before training camp.
He’d rather go undrafted and then picked up when he’s ready than get drafted and get cut by the end of OTA’s & camp. pretty smart move imo. If you know you gotta work on some things, the sooner the better!
he’s more concerned with being a good football player than the paycheck he’ll get as a rookie.
the anti-russell. LOL

March 1st, 2010 at 9:54 am
Jhill, I have a different take on Cable… reading between the lines.
—————————————————
“…getting ready to start the offseason and get to OTAs and minicamp and let the job be competed for. That’s where we’re at in terms of our starting quarterback.”
equals
“heck, at this point I’m ready to suit up and toss around the pigskin – I need one of these guys to step up.”
——————————————————-
Q: Who will competition include?
“All those guys so long as we can get some them re-signed and see if we add anybody to the mix.”
equals
“We’re gonna bring Gradkowski and Frye back because of the leadership and professionalism they provide. Don’t be surprised if we bring in someone else to make things interesting.”
For comparison, here’s Cable July 29, 2009:
“I think right now in moving forward our starting quarterback is JaMarcus Russell and Jeff is his backup,” Cable said. “How it all plays out and all that, we’re always evaluating this football team. We certainly want to put the best chance on the field to win.”
—————————————————–
“And he’ll get himself prepared to compete for the job. That’s the only way to look at it.”
equals
“And I hope for his own sake he takes the offseason seriously. I just can’t worry about him any more.”

Oh boo de damn hoo…
Reality check for ya…EVERY SINGLE QB TAKEN IN THE FIRST ROUND THAT IS ON A TEAM DRAFTING 1-15 is going on a team that is struggling.
Accuracy IS ACCURACY..don’t blame the o line because he misses someone WIDE OPEN…don’t blame the WR when the ball is thrown 10 feet to his right..don’t blame the play calling when Russell rifles a ball in at 90 MPH that should be thrown with touch…that’s on the qb.
See…everyone has to do their job. Blockers block. Receivers catch. Qb’s throw.
IF THE QB CAN’T DELIVER THE BALL TO WHERE HE’S AIMING, THE REST IS A MOOT POINT.

I don’t think Cable is even smart enough to have stuff for us to read between the lines.
He clearly isn’t a “global thinker” and is very reactionary, hence jaw-gate and beating his wife.
So if he says Bruce and Charlie are the leaders on offense, it isn’t a prodding to Jamarcus, sad as it may be those are our leaders!!
March 1st, 2010 at 10:44 am
But Mayock said he thinks McCoy’s performance in the bench press at the scouting combine (23 repetitions of 225 pounds) is a red flag.
“When you start comparing numbers, which is what this combine is all about, in the weight room yesterday Suh did 32 and McCoy did 23,” Mayock said Monday on NFL Network. “I was stunned that McCoy only did 23 reps. That tells me he hasn’t been in the weight room the way he should have been over the last three years.”

LOL..well..things would be slower, that’s for sure.
Every once in a blue moon you hear a coach honest as hell, stating exactly what someone needs to do, while letting everyone, including that person know the outcome if he doesn’t..and it’s refreshing.
Living in the bay area, all the sports casts go back and forth between raiders/niners..and hearing Singletary talk?
Guy speaks exactly what he feels..and that’s how it should be.
You hear him call someone out that EVERYONE knows didn’t get it done. No tiptoeing around..no innuendos, no double meanings.
Saw him numerous times go up to linemen, during games, and kick their ass, calling them out for bad play…then saw him go up to the same guys later, and quietly state ‘that’s exactly what I knew you could do. Do it again”.
Cable should learn from that..instead of holding everyone’s hand, making excuses for everyone, while never DEMANDING more.

He said there will be an open competition between all the guys that are here already, and maybe even someone else.
Doesn’t sound like he knows who any of the backups will be.

We are supposed to be filling Warren’s spot with a real NT that can hold the point and take up 2 blockers. Just asking which one of these guys is the 4-3 NT you had in mind?

These are going to be the most interesting of preseason games.
I suspect this “competition” will remain open throughout most of the pre-season, and could come down to the very last game.
Exciting stuff!!! Beats the heck out of watching the games for the unintenional comedy of hearing Atkinson speak.

March 1st, 2010 at 11:07 am
McCoy stocks r dropping, he only completed 23 reps benching 225. That’s like a TE or a RB, I remember Brady Quinn had similar to that. Dez Bryant is also falling I don’t know what’s going on but I have feeling it’s other agents involved in it, Dez was solid WR but it’s scary to hear he needs a babysitter 247

“I don’t think Cable cares what Russell is doing this offseason, because he’s already moved on.”
Agreed 100%.
I think Cable got into Al’s ear. Cable wasn’t very good when it came to personell decisions (granted DHB, Russell and probably a few others were untouchable early on), but at least he convinced Al Russell sucks.

Holy crap…did Cable really say that Javon Walker didn’t play because of the emergence of the young receivers? As I recall, Schilens was out half the season, JLH wasn’t near the same after taking the monster hit, and DHB was truly awful then got hurt.
So somehow someway in all that Cable couldn’t find a way to play Walker? Right…

The other restricted free agents are quarterback Charlie Frye, Pro Bowl long snapper Jon Condo, free safety Hiram Eugene, offensive tackle Khalif Barnes, center/guard Chris Morris, cornerback Stanford Routt, running back Gary Russell, fullback Luke Lawton, linebacker Ricky Brown and linebacker Jon Alston.

From MMQB:
But the most sobering note about Campbell came from Gil Brandt, who helped invent the event years ago and works it every year for the NFL. Brandt said Campbell hadn’t received a single all-conference-team vote last year. If a guy’s a first-round prospect, would he unanimously NOT be all-conference? I’m not saying the sculpted 6-foot-6, 314-pound Campbell won’t be a good player, but he’s sounding like a Raider pick to me. Great athlete, questionable production — like last year’s Terp picked first by Oakland, wideout Darrius Heyward-Bey.
“I know I didn’t get any honors,” Campbell said, “but I feel my self-accomplishments were better than winning a medal or anything else.”
What, exactly, is a self-accomplishment?
March 1st, 2010 at 11:35 am

Terrell Owens, who will turn 37 in December, caught 55 passes for 829 yards and five touchdowns in his only season in Buffalo. He also ran for a touchdown.
“I would like to thank the great fans in Buffalo, Ralph Wilson & the Bills organization for all their supports this past season,” Owens said on Twitter.
***
He got a 1-year, $6.5 million contract last year. not bad stats considering Edwards/Fitzpatrick at QB …
Bills OL gave up 46 sacks last year (only 3 less than ours) and they fired their OC just before the season started.
Would he be worth a 1-year, $5 million contract this year?
March 1st, 2010 at 11:58 am
Raiders coach Tom Cable has made it clear he wants quarterback Bruce Gradkowski back next season to compete with JaMarcus Russell for the starting job.
Quarterback Bruce Gradkowski expects a second-round tender from the Raiders.
The next step is to assign a tender to the restricted free agent by Thursday’s deadline. In lieu of a long-term deal, the Raiders intend to assign a second-round tender to Gradkowski.
Cable told as much to Gradkowski’s agent during a meeting at the NFL Combine. Once it happens, the Raiders have the right to match any contract offer tendered by another team or accept a second-round draft pick in return for losing Gradkowski. If he signs the tender, he gets $1.759 million for one year.
That should all but ensure Gradkowski is back. As well as he played as a brief starter for the Raiders, it isn’t likely a team will give up a second-round pick for a quarterback coming off a season-ending knee injury who has played on three teams in three years.

3 punt returns for JLH, for a total of 3 yards.
This must be upgraded!!!!

Very nice, thank u sir. How’s the weather in Podunk? Possum season comin up soon, lol.
No names, specifically. I could name who I like, but Al is looking for what Al looks for. Bruce Campbell seems pretty likely at this point unless one of the premium DTs is on the board still.
I’m of the mind we draft NT, ILB, G, G, RT, QB, CB/KR, FB, WR/KR. Maybe sub one of those for a real SSLB if we address one or more of those positions in FA.
It’s a shame really, seeing as how we really need a QB, RB, and WR too (Thanks Al!), though with Grads coming back and maybe a rookie in the mid rounds, Bush getting more carries (if not traded), and Chaz healthy and Murphy on the rise, the lines are a much higher priority, as is LB.

what was Cable supposed to say? “i wanted Monroe, but I don’t make the calls” haha. He toted the company line and said “We wanted DHB all along”, but what he meant was HE (not we) wanted DHB all along…

I also like a guy like Lamar Houston in Rd 2.
I think I like Williams from Tenn over Suh and McCoy for our defense. Trying to be realistic in that I know Kelly isn’t going anywhere and he is our 3 technique. Williams would be nice next to Kelly.
***
thats what I’m talkin’ about Jhill!
hoohah!!
a real NT benefits the entire defense. then if Kirk isn’t cut out for the MLB job so be it. replace both if need be. I just don’t see a rookie MLB like McClain or Spikes being successful behind humpty & dumpty (Warren & Kelly)
McClain & Houston? bring the pain!
Williams & Morrison (mine). Top 10 overall defense

I think it is HILARIOUS that some of these writers are trying to get their name our there with this Al loves speed so Bruce Campbell is the pick business.
Where is Al Davis’ history of love for speed on the OLINE????
March 1st, 2010 at 1:26 pm
I think Bruce Campbell is on HGH, he is from Maryland Uni just like Vernon Davis, Shawn Merriman and DHB. NCAA should investigate this program, there might be a connection between physical beast player like Campbell, Merriman, Davis and HGH. DHB might not been in the juice but who says skinny dudes don’t take any juice. Wasn’t Ben Johnson skinny and didn’t he take steroids? Hmm, I don’t want any player from Maryland Uni, Bruce Campbell is a beast but he never dominated and was injured many games, that sounds like juice to me. AL avoid this guy, if Okung is not there, draft Dez even though he has question marks.

I don’t have a problem with open competition for the starting QB spot. Otherwise how on earth could you motivate JaMarcus to start acting like he’s worth $60m?
I guess from Cable’s comments that we are likely to bring back Gradknowski and either or both of Frye and Losman. Losman has the most talent, the best arm but he’s never really delivered.
I also suspect that we might take a QB between the 3rd and 5th rounds. Jarrett Brown looks the best project but he might not last until our second pick in the 3rd. Likewise Jevan Snead. I think Zac Robinson (Oklahoma State) or Jonathan Crompton (Tennessee) are more likely. The best value will be Ryan Perrilloux – he has first round talent but, assuming Hue can wire the kid’s brain, he will be there in the seventh round.
March 1st, 2010 at 1:45 pm
I dunno Rich,
I dont think it was intended for DHB to be a “feature” receiver. I think Chaz and Miller will be the initial reads.

So with all the juniors coming out this year because of the planned rookie changes, has no one given any thought to the draft next year.
The draft class is going to be so terrible, the top 10 picks will probably be 2nd rounders in most drafts.

Owens did not have a dominant college season in his return from a season-ending knee injury in 2008. As a result, NFL people wondered if he would ever get back to being the player he was before the injury. Owens erased many of those concerns by shining at Mobile.
He dominated at the point of attack with strength, hand use and the explosiveness to jolt blockers. But what grabbed the NFL’s attention most was Owens’ ability to beat one-on-one pass blocks with very quick pass-rush moves. Before the Senior Bowl, Owens was considered a likely third- or fourth-round pick. Now, he is viewed as a definite second-rounder, with a good chance to move into the first round.

Vegas,
The Raiders need to something up the middle. They need someone up front that gets in the way and can push the offensive line. This defense will be terrible until they address this issue. To me, this is the #1 issue on this defense. Teams don’t bother passing because they know that every 10 runs is going to result in a long long run.

If Bush could get a few lessons from whoever taught Tiki better ball-security, I would endorse him as our every-down back. I’m from Kentucky and a major UK fan, so I was well-aware of that Louisville product for his entire career (and dreaded every game we played against him). I hated that he shattered that leg, but was glad that he’d miss the game against us. Nevertheless, I was certain that he’d be a first-rounder the first time I saw him play… and thought he’d be late second round even AFTER the injury. I was ecstatic that we got him in the fourth… and with the exception of that lone knock (fumbles), I have nothing bad to say about him.
Bush in ‘10!!! (with DMC in a split-back set, then motioning out to the slot/wing or just running a pattern… if Bush is willing to stay in and block in that situation on passing downs… if not, then screw it, we’ll go single-back, double-tight and have Bush by himself with DMC being a situational back/slot receiver). I love Fargas’s attitude, drive, and hard-nosed style… but he’s just not productive enough from down to down. DMC has so much potential, but he tackles himself and then strips the ball from himself on the way down so often that I can’t see him being the guy until he fixes his fundamentals.
March 1st, 2010 at 4:45 pm
SnB,
I do agree that we need more beef in the middle. Mt. Cody would be a real good fit, IMO, because while I think he is only a situational player in the NFL, those “situations” are what we sorely miss.

And rarely does our front not do their job, but they get bailed out by our LB’s.

March 1st, 2010 at 5:03 pm
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/03/01/mcclain-sits-out-combine-drills/
He’s healthy, but has decided that working out wasn’t in his best interests.
There are widely ranging opinions about McClain, who is projected to go anywhere from the twelfth overall pick to the Dolphins to the start of the second round. McClain may not fit well on a 4-3 defense. In fact, McClain said he’d be more comfortable as an inside linebacker in a 3-4 defense.
=====================================================

Unless Russell pulls a repeat of last year, where he is overweight, late for meetings, etc…Russell will be the starter.
Gradkowksi is here to push…but he has a HIGH hurdle rate. The Raiders want to see Russell in that position.
As for Gradkowski, how can a starting QB be available for only a 2nd round tender? Shouldn’t some QB hungry team just JUMP all over this and make an offer?
Gradkowski has to take the long road…that’s for sure
March 1st, 2010 at 5:11 pm
My bet, Bruce starts the first preseason game, as the Raiders hope that Jamarcus playing against 2nd stringers builds his confidence and production.
Only makes sense.
And we haven’t seen if a team will sign him to an offer sheet. My bet is that it is unlikely, but I wouldn’t be shocked if the Broncos or Seahawks give Bruce a reasonable offer.
March 1st, 2010 at 5:14 pm
VR,
So you think the Seahawks would be bringing him in to start?
Doubtful, it would be to back-up.
I will keep throwing cool water on this. Gradkowski is getting the hype after 2 games because JaDavis Russell has been awful. Not because Gradkowski is this elite talent in the making
Doesn’t change the fact that Gradkowski is limited and that everything is based on 2 games……….
March 1st, 2010 at 5:15 pm
Regardless of the QB, the offense will struggle in 2010 as QBs, Receivers, RBs get used to a new system and the new O-Line tries to gel.
That’s why a defense that can get off the field is so important. A defense that can pick up the offense. Getting off the field means stopping the run and forcing teams to throw at Nnamdi, Johnson and company
March 1st, 2010 at 5:17 pm
Vegas,
If you recall, that was my proposal this whole time… let Gradkowski and Losman alternate starts in preseason with whoever didn’t start playing the second quarter, then let JaMarcus take every snap for the second half of EVERY preseason game. That way, he gets lots of reps in game situations, but against lesser competition (but still professionals at full-speed). That should add up to a more finely tuned JR for the start of the season (if he’s committed and WORKS).
The worst-case scenario is that JR continues the laziness and lack of preparation and inaccuracy… and isn’t ready to be the starter for the regular season opener and we go with Grads or Losman and I’d be fine with that (but I’d prefer it if JR actually did what he SHOULD be doing and finds a way to fulfill his potential… while still a Raider).
March 1st, 2010 at 5:19 pm
Watching some combine highlights. L Houston impressed today along with Spoon. Analysts said they see Houston going top of the 2nd and Spoon towards the bottom of the 1st.
Gonna be interesting to see where the coaching staff / Al see what the defiencies are on the team and what their strategy will be. I am not of the belief that Al drafts based solely on HWS. However, all things being equal (seldom are they) why not go with the HWS measurables.
I Know there are some diverse opinions on this board on the direction the Raiders should go in the draft. I just find it really interesting to watch the draft play out.
March 1st, 2010 at 5:21 pm
I’m NOT saying that Gradkowski is the solution or that he’s elite or that he is the future of the franchise. I’m saying that if JR doesn’t change, I’m fine with Gradkowski or Losman being our guy for the year (or until we get an upgrade). Behind a better line, Grads or Losman might be good enough to go over .500… and I’d take our chances with them before the ‘09 version of JR. That having been said, I WANT to have faith in JR to reach his potential… I really want to… but he has to show me something in order for that to happen.

Bruce had the second highest QB rating, and started the 3 most games of all QB’s taken in the draft of 2006.
And he was the most productive rookie that year for QB in that draft.
So of all QB’s from that draft, he had the best rookie year, and one of the best 4th years.

******************************
Let’s try this again.
First of all we scored 20 points 4 times all year. Opening night, Bengals and Steelers with Bruce and in Denver.
Bengals game, we had 2 80 yard TD drives in that game. We had 5 all year, Jamarcus had two and one was the Miller 85 yard TD.
Cowboys game was a bad game. Still had 200 yards passing and DHB even got a TD, but bad game.
Steelers game, best offensive game all year, best 4th quarter in Raiders history for a QB.
Redskins game, we had 10 points at halftime. At that time, that tied for the season high at halftime with opening night (broken the next week with 13 in Denver).
Not to mention, Bruce’s 3 games he finsished, he played 2 on the road, against the Super Bowl champs and two division winners, and 3 top 12 defenses.
He didn’t play one good quarter, he only played one bad game, which would be a good game, STATISTICALLY for Jamarcus, against some of the toughest competition we played all year.
More facts for you

Bruce also didn’t get the benfit of Mike Bush. I think Bush had 13 carries combined in the 3.5 games Bruce played, while Fargas had close to 50 carries on those games.
Just give the kid a chance to build on last year. If it was a fluke, we will all see, and it won’t cost us much of a committment to see if it was or wasn’t.

Watching this combine on NFLnetwork, and it looked like Wauffle had a significant role with the D-line guys today.
One point him and Suh are going over something, and Wauffle is coaching him up one-on-one.
If I’m Al, I am calling the Lions early and often for that second pick if Bradford goes first.

Vegas,
I just wish that Gradkowski was a guy that played 8 games and seized the job. Just make sure in your evaluation of the guy, that its based on HIS talent….and not the deficiencies of JaDavis or other QBs taken in 2006.
The goal is to win a Super Bowl. Not to have the best QB of the 2006 draft or someone that can outperform a lazy 2009 JaDavis Russell.

I’ve said this before….
Gradkowski might get you a few wins, but QBs like him rarely get their teams to the next level and end up retiring with nice unspectacular careers.
You have to hope JaDavis gets it because he’s got the physical tools to be the guy. If you don’t think he’s the guy or will develop into the guy….then the Raiders need to go find someone else to groom.

Is our goal really to win the Super Bowl? I know a lot can change in a year, but it’s that type of thinking that has got us in this mess.
Can we at least get to .500 first? It’s been 7 years.
I have always said Bruce is the perfect guy to right the ship for a few years, maybe get us in the playoffs one year, and put in place a system for the next franchise QB.

I agree almost wholeheartedly. But I’m of the opinion that JR gets it more than he’s been given credit for and that the hardship placed on him by starting Murphy and DHB behind a subpar OL with no running game has been grossly understated.
March 1st, 2010 at 6:11 pm
Are DHB and Murphy any worse than Lelie and Ron Curry? Those guys we were out of the league for good the next year.
If Jamarcus can have the year he had in 2008 with those guys, he should have at least been better than he was in 2009.
Simply put, I think the NFL had a year of film on Russell (and Cable) and gameplanned accordingly in 2009. Russell and Cable didn’t make the necessary adjustments and hence 3 TD’s and 17 turnovers.

Gradkowski told he’ll get second-round tender
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 1, 2010 7:40 PM ET
Bruce Gradkowski looks like the early favorite to be Oakland’s starting quarterback in 2010. But first the Raiders have to make sure he stays on the team.
With that in mind, Oakland informed Gradkowski’s agent at the combine they will place a second-round tender on the restricted free agent, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
It’s not a great sign for the organization when they are so confident no team will give up a second-round pick for their best quarterback. But it’s also a safe bet no one will go after Gradkowski at that price, so it’s a smart move.
Gradkowski will make $1.759 million for one year if he signs the deal. The team doesn’t sound interested in awarding the Polish Popgun a long-term contract yet.
This is just guess, but we suspect JaMarcus Russell won’t be the only legitimate competition Gradkowski faces for the job next year.
March 1st, 2010 at 6:17 pm
Will Russell be capable of audibling this year?
I think it is about time, going into his 4th year.
How about complete mastery of the playbook? A lot is thrown around here about his knowledge of the playbook and all that, but all we have is Cable’s comment after the Jets game in which Cable said Russell didn’t line the guys up properly on the very first play.
The very first play that was scripted and probably practiced a million times during the week. Maybe he got confused, maybe he forgot, who knows, but on that one play, he didn’t know the play.
March 1st, 2010 at 6:17 pm
I’m fine with Gradkowski being the starter so long as thats what Hue Jackson wants, the team brings in more competition to ensure we have the best QB and his knees have to be healthy because tearing ligaments in both knees may ruin his career.
March 1st, 2010 at 6:19 pm

Poor JR. Look at the guy’s starters at WR the last two years. Lelie/Curry in 2008 and Murphy/DHB in 2009. And he was supposed to be lighting it up? Also remember that JR’s game really picked up at the end of 2008 when we started Schilens and JLH. Al even talked about how important it was to be playing those two during the new conference announcing Cable’s hire. Of course Chaz gets hurt and somehow JLH gets passed over for a starting role. Then as soon as Chaz comes back, JR gets benched. Don’t know about you, but I saw JR making a lot of plays with Chaz vs Denver and Baltimore. Imagine what JR might do when, for the 1st time in his young career, he can start the season with the same set of WRs that he had the previous season?

Lines of scrimmage, right. Although I would say the o-line takes precedence. DB’s? not as much.
Linebackers is a huge need also and I can’t believe he didn’t mention it, but whatever, one interview doesn’t really reveal much. This team desperately needs linebackers, I hope the coaches and Al Burns realize that.

I say good if we trade Bush.
What does he have to hang his hat on? Plus he goes down just as easy on contact as DMAC. His 177 against Tampa? Any one of us on this blog would have put up those numbers knowing there was no practice after that game for at least 4 months.

Vegas Raider,
I don’t think the Raiders are going to win the Super Bowl next year. My point is that if you are not making a run…you should be preparing to make the run.
Does Gradkowski project to being a Super Bowl caliber QB? What other QBs of Gradkowski’s pedigree, makeup, strenghts, weaknesses does he compare too?
I don’t think he’s a Super Bowl caliber QB. Therefore, you better hope JaDavis develops into one or they draft/sign one.
Gradkowski might thrill you for a quarter or a game…but what will he look like in week 6….week 10 of a full season where the opponent game plans him.
I have seen way to many middling QBs in Oakland to get excited about Bruce Gradkowski or QBs like him. I am hoping against common sense that JaDavis finally get it.
Otherwise 7 years of awful football turns into 8, 10 ,12 and worse….
March 1st, 2010 at 6:36 pm
In 2008 the Raiders were still running the Kiffin system, get the QB outside with roll-outs and moving pockets.
In 2009, Davis went Old-School, back to the 7 step drop, sitting duck pass game.

And you actually post as a PLUS that he pays no attention to the rush? HE’S SUPPOSED TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE RUSH..again…it’s called POCKET AWARENESS. It’s called NOT GETTING SACKED..it’s called NOT PUTTING YOUR TEAM IN A NEGATIVE SITUATION. “Poised” means you stick in there AND MAKE A PLAY..not “stick in there, and get slammed to the turf..over and over and over.”
###################
Tough as nails.
Richochet: What? he falls down WHEN HE’S TOUCHED..that’s not tough..that’s weak. He NEVER has fought for yards..he NEVER has shaken off a tackle..one of his many knocks is how can someone that huge just collapse when he’s touched? ####################3
Will step up in the pocket and fire the ball into thhe face of the rush without worrying about the inevitable punishment behind our line.
RICHOCHET: lol…he’s THE WORST STARTING QB FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS..oh..which happen to be his ONLY years that he played. He doesn’t make plays..he’s absent of thought..has NO IDEA what’s going on around him. What the hell are you watching? Dude..you’re either blind, or a fool.
########################
Calm, cool and collected.
RICHOCHET..oh geez…you are an idiot. Manning is calm cool and collected. Brady is calm cool and collected. Russell is brain dead, blase’ and lost. Again, how can the absolute worst starting qb, IN THE LEAGUE, be called ‘calm cool and collected”? He sucks..and one of the reasons he sucks is because he doesn’t care.
#############
Can shake off a bad play like it never happened and come back to make a big play.
RICHOCHET: Has 20 BAD PLAYS for every big play…that equals to having the WORST STATS IN THE LEAGUE. You’re not supposed to make 20 stupid plays, then get praise from some moron when you make ONE GOOD PLAY.
################
Has a flair for the dramatic with three game winning/tying drives this season to back it up.
RICHOCHET: Raiders set a record for 11 plus loss seasons..and you think that because JR has a game where his QB RATING WAS 42, AND ANOTHER ONE 45 THAT because one drive was successful erases the rest of the game that he was like 9 for 22??
That’s NOT A PLUS to suck the whole game..unless you’re desperate to say something so you don’t look foolish.
See YOU.
########################
His arm strength is unquestioned, arguably the strongest arm in football. Forget throwing it 80 yards. It’s the velocity. He regularly fits balls into tight windows.
RICHOCHET: You idiot…NO HE DOESN’T.
First off…JEFF GEORGE HAD THE STRONGEST ARM IN FOOTBALL…so did Dan Pastorini..so does Russell…AND ALL SUCK AS QB’S. Strong arm doesn’t mean squat if you suck at completing the ball to a receiver.
And ‘regularly fits ball into tight windows”?? wrong..HE REGULARLY MISSES WIDE OPEN RECEIVERS.
Let me simplify it for ya…Russell has HORRIBLE FOOTWORK…has ZERO pocket presence, has arguably the worst touch on his balls, in the NFL, is incapable of going through his reads, routinely is off the mark with receivers, shows zero motivation and leadership ability, and is grossly out of shape, and overweight.
The team doesn’t like playing with him, and most of the fans are tired of his sorryass “what, me care?” attitude.
Only a fool would state “that’s not what, me care? That’s cool, calm and collected.”..ESPECIALLY when he’s the worst starting qb IN THE LEAGUE.

504,
B.S! When you average 4.8 yards per carry on over 120 carries…you are a running back.
Maybe you love the heart and fire no talent guys like Fargas and Gradkowski…but that shhhhhh doesn’t cut it when it comes to wins and losses….talent AND heart does.
Michael Bush in a full season as a starter would be a 1200 yard back. When he’s received carries he’s performed. He’s the only back to break long runs on this team. When he was averaging over 5+ per carry against Cleveland.. the head coach decided to let Charlie Frye throw 40x.
That’s why teams that know what they are doing…unlike here….are going for him.

We agree that the supporting cast is in dire need of an upgrade. And that it had a significant impact on the effectiveness of our QBs last year. Tom Cable had nothing but loves and kisses for Justin Fargas. Plus, Cable doesn’t like Bush’s personality or whatever…maybe the reluctance to play fullback…maybe Bush’s support for Gilbride…I don’t know.
But Fargas got the same number of carries as Bush and wasn’t nearly as effective.

Boy are they laughing it up here in Tampa. They have the Raiders pegged to pick Bruce Campbell. I didn’t watch the combine, but it sounds like he must of racked up some number that Davis won’t be able to resist. Some project Campbell 5th at his position and a low 1st rounder at best. We threw the second least amount of passes this year. We lost games by 30 points when we didn’t even through 15 passes. The first week was Russell’s highest point total of the year.

As long as JR is around all summer and doing the things Hue asks of him, he should enter the camp as the No. 1 guy. If you really want to talk about earning the job, the reality is that he earned it the day the organization decided to draft him No. 1 over all. He had a decent 1st year as a starter. You would think Tom Cable. But after that disaster that was 2009, I am going to say that this is a tough question for anyone to answer.
Play the guy getting 3.8 yds per carry over the guy getting damn near 5 per carry….alrighty then!
Play the receiver that can’t catch….alrighty then!
Cornell Green? Samson Satele is the answer….Khalif Barnes…Kwame Harris???
You ask a very good question

I don’t think it is that hard to discern who is playing better? Do you? Is is that hard to watch two guys play with the same guys and know which one looks better and it putting more points on the board.
Your overthinking this. I trust that Hue Jackson can watch two guys through 4 months of camp and 4 preseason games and know who is the best option. If he can’t do that, he shouldn’t be coaching in the NFL.
March 1st, 2010 at 7:19 pm
SnB,
Bush is not that good. Hell some stats say JaMarcus aint that bad when compared to others.
After watching the NFC Championship game, I have a different outlook on stats. Brees was 11-17 3 TDs 0 int and it was the worst I’ve seen him since his San Diego rookie year. He almost choked that game but did make up for it in Super Bowl.
My point is stats do lie sometimes. I should have known this when our Rob Ryan led defense was #3 overall that one year.

So what about the 130 yards Bush had against Denver is B.S?
Or the 120 yds against K.C?
or the 50 some yards on 10 carries at halftime against Cleveland?
Or the 55 yds on MNF on 10 carries
What..he was supposed to get 300 yards in those games? The defenses just gave him the yards? Or the Raider O-Line was just so dominant?
Give me a break!

But Fargas’ 3.8 yds a carry and and two yard crashes into the line is a thing of beauty.
This line of thinking goes to the core of why this roster is so broken

In of itself, what the hell does reporting a few pounds overweight mean? How did it change the fact that he was throwing to two rooks? How does showing up slim and trim improve our OL play? If it’s about showing in tip-top shape, why didn’t Brady Qinn make the Pro Bowl? The Raiders had a QB School, voluntary minicamps, involuntary minicamps and training camp. JR was there for all of it. The overweight thing is so overblown!

Just an interesting note of completely useless and trivial detail: Napoleon was NOT a little man. He wasn’t even short for HIS day. The common misconception that he was of small stature was a product of his opposition’s propaganda.
This has nothing to do with football, I just like informing people of that when they talk about a Napoleon complex. It’s a misnomer if ever there was one. Napoleon’s actions were never to compensate for a lack of height, so it’s silly to use that term. “Little Man Complex” is much more apt, yet not in common usage because people, commonly, are ignorant.

Vegas,
I don’t hate Gradkowski. I just think there is too much enthusiasm for a guy that’s…well..just a guy.
If he wins the job, I will chear for him. I also believe if he wins the job whether fairly or otherwise, the Raider franchise in trouble.
Bruce Gradkowski type QBs just don’t win many meaningful games.
The Colts and Chargers didn’t waste time with Bruce Gradkowski type QBs….they got on with it.
If Bruce wins the job he should start…the Raiders better have another young QB in waiting should that happen.
Gradkowski is a limited QB with little upside
March 1st, 2010 at 7:42 pm
Ryan Fitzpatrick gave the Bills a lift in a couple of games…..perhaps we should bring him in to compete? Maybe match the Bills tender?
Think Flacco, Ryan or Henne would be exposed on a 2nd round tender?
Not slamming Gradkowski here…just trying to put things in perspective
March 1st, 2010 at 7:43 pm
Rex Ryan was of the same mindset. He needed a QB that will play at a high level for years and has the potential to be the main guy.
He didn’t go out and look for Gradkowski. Gradkowski was busy getting cut in St. Louis.
Again Vegas, 6 to 8 games of evidence would make me feel better about it.
2 games? That means nothing to me
March 1st, 2010 at 7:47 pm
Bruce Gradkowski is a journeyman QB. The dictionary definition of one actually. That being said, if the competition is REALLY open, theres no way in hell he dznt win the job. He will come in prepared, in shape and will undoubtedly have the team rallying around him. Like I said, IF the job is truly open he will win. Bad news for Jamarcus, bad news for Raider fans everywhere because he is not a legit NFL starter.

I’m sure all the Rams fans were saying the same thing in 1999 about Kurt Warner.

There is no silver-bullet when it comes to locating NFL QB’s. Some are top-flight no doubt guys like Peyton, Matt Ryan and Donovan McNabb. Others were undrafted like Romo and Kurt Warner. Others took a few years to get it together like Schaubb, Brees and Brett Favre. Super Bowls have been won recently by guys from the first-round (Ben and Eli) and guys from the last round (Brady).
You don’t know until you put the guy on the field and see what happens.

We all know the Kurt Warner story. Not comparing Bruce to Kurt at all, just saying if a guy can not start an NFL game until he is 27 years old, and go on to a HOF career, having your mind set on what type of QB a 26 year old Bruce Gradkowski is, is very narrow-minded.
March 1st, 2010 at 7:54 pm
Okay, since this is on topic, here’s MY bias:
I love JaMarcus’s potential, but I HATE what he’s done with it (or rather, what he HASN’T done with it).
I like Gradkowski’s abilities (not love). I LOVE his awareness, his drive, his dedication, and his leadership. I believe that last season Bruce did twice as much as JaMarcus did with half the natural ability. I do not love Bruce and do not see him as the future. However, if Losman or another QB doesn’t pan out… AND… JaMarcus doesn’t step up, then I am fine with giving the ‘10 season to Bruce because I think he can at least get us to .500… and that’s a step in the right direction. Frankly, I’d like to see what he can do with a better cast around him.
I know that a better cast would also improve JR’s play immensely, but until he puts in the work in the film room, weight room, and classroom… I don’t think he deserves to start over someone who put up better numbers in EVERY category with the same cast (this is a reference most specifically to Charlie FRYE, of all people, whose performance was better than JR’s in the season finale where each played one half with the exact same supporting cast, but it also applies to other situations).
I want more than anything for JR to put in the WORK this offseason in every possible area, to take the role for which he was drafted and paid a king’s ransom, and become an All-Pro in the near future. I hear that he’s doing the right things at the moment, so I will only criticize the past and hope for a better tomorrow… but until I see improvement for myself, I will back Gradkowski (maybe Losman if we ever get to see more of him).
My bias is based on effort put forth (weight, meetings, his attitude) and will continue to lean away from JR until he corrects it. If you want to challenge me for saying that he doesn’t put forth the effort, I’ll GLADLY link the video of Nnamdi’s interview for you again where he talks about JR not being prepared for games and for the season as a whole. A QB who deserves to start would NOT do the things that JR does. I’ll still cross my fingers, though, because JR at his top potential is better than anyone else we have. However, he’s been nowhere near that yet and doesn’t appear to have the desire to put forth the effort to get there. That puts him on the bench in my book… especially when you have guys who get more accomplished on the field.
March 1st, 2010 at 7:54 pm
What!!? he wasn’t short for his day? what the hell does that mean in his day people wer short???
Since you know so much about Napoleon how tall was he??
It’s just the anyone but Russell syndrome. They hate that kid but they refuse to admit it most of them. But in this open competition we will see who’s who and what’s what. This is actually the best thing for everyone concerned because anyone afraid to compete I don’t want. That includes Russell. So we’ll see…. If he is anyhwere near what I think he is a competition with Gradkowski is no big deal in fact I would love to see him compete against much better competition.
I think Russell is hands down the best player at his position on this team and he needs to prove it where it counts the most.
March 1st, 2010 at 7:55 pm
Vegas,
How many guys come out of the grocery store and do what Warner did?
Again, the huge red flag that goes up with Gradkowski is that he was cut from 3 bad teams…one team he didn’t make it out of camp.
Those other guys you mentioned were drafted by their original teams and traded for value. Brees was given a raw deal but had demonstrated a few years of solid QB play.
We are handing Gradkowski the keys because JaDavis has been terrible and two games of performance.
I don’t like long-shots. They happen so rarely and I don’t much believe in miracles.
Again, if Gradkowski beats out Russell, then he should start….I am just saying that if Gradkowski wins…it will confirm that this franchis e is a long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long way from competing

Priest,
Are you unaware that humans have gotten taller over the years? The average height of a man NOW is taller than it was 100 years ago… and that was taller than 100 before that… and so on.
Napoleon was born in 1769 and his height in English inches (what we use here in America) was five feet, six and a half inches tall. That was taller than the average frenchman during that time.
I learned all this when we studied the Little Man Complex when I was a Psychological Operations Specialist. I found a link for you so that you won’t just have to take my word for it. Maybe you shouldn’t attack someone’s statements so vehemently when you don’t know what you’re talking about. It sucks to talk smack and then be proven wrong, doesn’t it?

And Russell by far the best player at his position on the roster? Ask “No Comment” aka Schilens what he thinks.
And I rooted for Russell since he got to LSU. He has regressed. Yes he was good at times. Just not the last few times we saw him.
March 1st, 2010 at 8:15 pm
Im actually pretty optimistic regarding Jamarcus.
1. He’s trying to better himself by off season training.
2. When he went in relief in that last game, to me, he looked like he was throwing some good passes. (except the two bad decision ones).
3. After he threw his second pick, the tv cameras zoomed in on him and he was visibly upset. And thats not something i’ve seen since hes been here. For me, if i was the worst rated qb in football and got demoted to 3rd string and got booed all year by my own fands and my favorite uncle dies and I have a last chance to go in and show some people wrong and it blows up in my face…..im gonna be one pissed off s.o.b. It’s not like I said it in mean way or was an ass about it, I just noted that his usage was a common misconception in the hopes that he (and others) would gain from it, as useless as it may seem. If you use the phrase as most people do and make comments regarding people with the assumption that you’re right, then knowing that it’s wrong clearly ISN’T of no use. Please excuse me for trying to spread information and help people say more intelligent things.
March 1st, 2010 at 8:25 pm
Vegas, unlike you I’ve never been afraid that he might lose his job to a better player……a better player key word is BETTER. Wether you realise it or not black QB’s even in 2010 don’t get by like white QB’s just because they happen to be talented. They have to prove it their entire careers over and over and over again. This kid is a fighter and has been his entire life to prove what kind of player he is.
He neat out players at LSU to WIN that job it wasn’t handed to him. When he came here he had to wait until he was ready (knew the playbook) could audible and compete at a high enough level to win.
You see I know this kid a lot better than you and most people in here who think he desn’t care and he’s lazy and stupid. He’s far from it. He was one of the mst scrutinized players at the combine and his proday. He was researched over and over again to find anything that might suggest that he has a weakness that wuld stear you away from him. Most dumbells in here think he was drafted on one game and the raiders didn’t do their due diligence. Quite vthe contrary. They over did it. With private eyes and the like the kid came through with shinnning colors. This is IMO a clitch in his career a test if you will but not something he hasn’t seen or done ten times over.
So unlike you I have no problem with competition as long as it is fair and may the nest player win…………period

One point him and Suh are going over something, and Wauffle is coaching him up one-on-one.
If I’m Al, I am calling the Lions early and often for that second pick if Bradford goes first.

Yep…the team has the ammo with the two 3rds and two 5ths.
Trading the #8 pick overall, and one of the 3rds and one of the 5th’s to move up to the #2 spot should get it done.
Move Seymour inside to play alongside Suh, cut Warren and Kelly and then draft either an OT like Charles Brown or Rodger Saffold in Round 2 or go pass rushing RDE like Corey Wootton or Austin Lane.

Priest, how do you know that your ancestors weren’t shorter than the average person of your lineage now? This doesn’t apply only to Europeans, it’s a common link among people of all geographical regions. Just because your dad says that your grandfather was tall and your grandfather says that his grandfather was tall doesn’t mean that they were all the same height. They may have been tall compared to others of that era, who were shorter (on average) than people of THIS era.

Q: Getting coffee and donuts?
Cable: And cream and sugar.

Also, I wouldn’t have expected you to make an attempt to be condescending by pulling the “stevie” stuff. I thought better of you…

March 1st, 2010 at 8:51 pm
This is just pathetic. T Cable you incompetent jack a$$.
_________________________________________________________
Q: Do you expect Javon Walker to be on the team? And why haven’t you been able to get him going?
Cable: To answer the second question first, really we’ve had the emergence of those young players and really Louis Murphy, Chaz Schilens and Johnnie Lee Higgins give us something. Darius Heyward-Bey gets hurt and misses a good chunk of the season. So I think it’s there development and trying to bring that group along. Will he be there next year? We’ll see.

I know I know him better than you I studied this kid since his first start at LSU I was on the begging them to draft the kid. If I’m wrong I’ll be the first to admit it but based on what I saw last year there is way too much to suggest that he was THE problem on this team and anyone who says he was is ignorant…………period
Stevie all I know is my ancestors were not considered short by any strecth and it has nothing to do with mr grandparents or great grand parents. I said ANCESTORS comprehend? From the Africa coast and Ghana now you can use a median average or whatever you chse to justify whatever argument you want. But the fact is they were not short people in general. You can go from the Sudan to Egypt to So Africa into the Middle East they were huge tribes of very large people throughout history.
March 1st, 2010 at 8:56 pm
I say plenty of “words” about him Kool, I just don’t say EVERY word about him.
That’s why I am a fan of Bruce for the Raiders. It’s about the best we can do due to what Al has done to this franchise. He will never install a system to teach a talented young guy, so get a younger “Vet” who was taught by someone else.

March 1st, 2010 at 9:01 pm
Priest, I’m not saying that they were short… I’m saying that their average height was shorter than the average height of their descendants. What are you having trouble comprehending here?
They were taller than Europeans, but not taller (on average) than people who live in Ghana NOW (on average). Nowhere did I say that they were short. How are you confusing this? Do you think that the rest of the globe’s population has gotten incrementally taller as generations pass, but all black people have stayed the same height forever without getting taller as generations pass? If that’s what you think, then that means that black people will be shorter than asian people within a few hundred years. Prepare for an all-Yao All-Star Team!

Mista,
I’ve had several people tell me similar things about Priest, but I wanted to give him a fair shot and judge him based on the content of what he says to me. Despite the fact that he makes obviously ridiculous on intimate terms and having frequent meetings with GM’s, owners, coaches, and players at various levels and locations, I still give him a chance because I enjoy talking about people’s opinions and perspectives. I know that he’s said many things that are B.S., but I am interested in his opinion on Post 366, so I’ll tolerate the rest. Unfortunately, he hasn’t GIVEN that opinion. Nevertheless, I’m interested in some of his statements when they aren’t just blind bias.
I’ve never seen anyone consistently agree with anything that he says other than Debo… and I enjoy discussing things with Debo, as well. Just because our opinions differ doesn’t mean we can’t discuss… in fact, it makes it more interesting, at least for ME. I guess if I want to actually get him to say something worth reading tonight, I’ll have to stoop to a childish level and call him Priestie-pooh or widdle-tj or something as condescending as stevie. *sigh* I don’t know why people can’t tolerate different beliefs without becoming a child.
March 1st, 2010 at 9:15 pm

This a$$ clown needs to be publicly humiliated! What an embarrassment to the history of this franchise.
March 1st, 2010 at 9:15 pm
Stevie,
I understand completely what you’re trying to say and I’m telling you it’s the opposite based on what people were in those parts of the world.
There were people in the Middle east that would be considered Giants today their knecks were so large they were the tribe called Anakim it is the root word by which the word neck came from these people are rumored to have been minimum average between 6-7 ft. tall some 9 ft. tall and the phillistines were very tall I think Goliath was said to be over 9 ft. tall
Zulu’s well over 7 ft. tall hundreds of years ago to the Sudan where people would easily average 6ft. tall. You might look upon these as myths but there is acrheological evidence that they existed. They’ve found remains of people over 10 ft. tall from over 4 thousand years ago. They still need to be substanciated but there are pictures of them.

Priest, the archaeologial records show that those giants aren’t the NORM. Someone might find Yao Ming’s skeleton one day a thousand years from now, but that doesn’t mean that all Chinamen are seven feet tall. You’re basing a statement about thousands of people on the height of their tallest. I’m basing it on the averages from the skeletons found in those areas over long periods of time from different eras. To say that the average Zulu height was over 7 feet tall would actually be a claim that evolution is working in reverse for them (as Zulu people don’t average that height today). You are making an assumption about an entire population based solely on a small percentage. That’s like saying that Bruce Gradkowski is the greatest QB in the league because of that 4th Quarter against the Steelers… or that JR is the greatest in the league because of that last drive against Denver. You have to take the AVERAGE of the people from that area at that time.
Nevertheless, let’s move on to something football-related. Post 366?

Being average at best is a pretty good feat behind our Offensive Line, IMO. The fact that the system may not have been suited for JR’s abilities at this stage in his career is another point entirely. We’ll have to see how each QB performs under Hue’s system (or variations that are tuned to each QB) in order to make a determination for this season.
If you couldn’t care less about other people’s opinions, then why post here? Do you just come here to say what you think and only care what’s said by those who agree with you? Do you have no interest in discussing anything, just agreeing and arguing instead?

There’s nothing funnier on the planet than hearing Raider fans mutter the words “pocket presence”.
When Russell was drafted, did anyone care about his pocket presence? All that mattered was that he could throw a ball 50 yards.
Also, isn’t it funny that Al Davis insists on a quarterback who’s the opposite of Rich Gannon, the last QB to take us to a Super Bowl?

RMR, he’s doing it that way because he doesn’t have Lombardi… or ANYONE from that era (besides Trask and Herrera) in the building to filter his ideas and give him good advice. For the past seven years, there’s been no one to say, “Hey Al… that DB/HB/WR/KR ran an amazing 40 alright, but we need to draft (x) because doing that will make our entire team better overall. We can find guys who are really fast, but can’t play football in later rounds or as undrafted free agents… or at track meets. For now, we have to go with this move.”

I agree with you on Cody, however I have to say something that really bothers me about having linemen run the 40: What in the hell does it matter what he can do in the 40? I only care about his 10 yard shuttle run… and really, I could reduce that to a 5 yard burst test and be happy. Linemen need a ten second burst of power mixed with great footwork and hand-technique. Off the field of play, testing for anything other than those things is pointless to use as an evaluation tool. Linemen don’t need the kind of endurance to maintain a sprint for 40 consecutive yards, they need shorter durations with more explosiveness.

March 1st, 2010 at 10:55 pm
Why have I disrespected you in some way Stevie?
March 1st, 2010 at 10:55 pm
SteveAlford21,
I’m sure RMR will disagree, but I think the biggest hindrance to Al finding productive players right now, is that he’s too old.
Before he could get out and have a look at a player who had stop watch speed and determine if they were also football players. Now he just has to rely on the times only. I’m sure that in the 60’s he could assess a player like DHB, and realizes that although he’s fast, he’s just not a top notch player.
He also can’t get the best coaches to come to the Raiders anymore. Way back, a smart young coach would die for the opportunity to coach for the silver and black. That’s no longer the case. Now, talent goes undeveloped because the best teachers are headed elsewhere.
March 1st, 2010 at 10:56 pm
To come up with the picture? About 3 seconds. Google image search. I came up with calling Cable butterbean the other night when I suggested we should sign butterbean to our o line. I then said, wait a minute, butterbean’s already our coach. priest, do you think Tom Cable’s a better coach? Is he better than Gruden?
March 1st, 2010 at 10:58 pm

March 1st, 2010 at 10:58 pm
The way to evaluate players is through film study. I looked at 10 minutes of film and could tell that Crabtree was a much better player than DHB. 40 times don’t mean s….
March 1st, 2010 at 10:59 pm
RMR,
Yes, I am saying that based on the differences in how the Raiders’ rosters have been managed during specific eras and “administrations,” most of the personnel decisions other than “skill positions” were handled by non-Davis-entities. The lack of a player-personnel department and sufficient scouting and evaluation departments at present makes me uneasy every April. I could be wrong, but it seems self-evident to me that the Lombardi guys had a big hand in the success of the late 90s and early 00s.
Having said that, I also believe that when Al has smart, dependable football execs around to counter his ideas and share knowledge, he does a better job of collaborating with their “mainstream genius” to deliver a great product than anyone else of which I could think. On his own, however… Al’s best ideas are indistinguishable from his worst… and without checks and balances, he puts both kinds into action… and the bad usually do worse than just negating the good.
March 1st, 2010 at 11:01 pm
Priest, do you realize how childish you’re being? To feign ignorance and then reiterate the disrespect out of some misguided notion that it’s clever… well, that’s not only ridiculously immature, but it’s not even funny to the most easily-amused.

The actual time is not important for a big guy. They’ll never catch anyone. What is important is how they run. Trent Williams was very fluid, and ran like someone much lighter. This implies good co-ordination, balance, and body symmetry. That means he will also have good flexion and be less likely be injured, etc.
Natural athletes generally perform better in the NFL than manufactured ones.

Al has been on his own since he traded Gruden. The best parts of the front office vacated at that point (except for Lombardi hanging in for another season, I think) and I honestly think that Al probably felt a little betrayed and said, “Screw it, I can’t trust anyone and I can do it all myself!”

Boy you guy’s are so freakin’ ignorant it’s beyond funny it’s quite sad. Didn’t a young brilliant coach just come here? Or am I mistaken or doesn’t he count anymore now that he’s already here?
Hue Jackson just turned down wrking with Jay Cutler to come here. So did Mike Wauffle whom most of you don’t know who he is. There were wveral coaches interested in coming here. But you guy’s insist on believe your own lies. And there are several great young talented players on this team which get ignored by ignorant football fans who wouldn’t the difference if you pointed it out to them.
Sme of you are such a joke it’s beyond laughable. You wrestle with our losing record and surmise that everything is Mr Davis’s fault because that is the easy answer that way you don’t have to use your brain. Giving anything further thought than Mr davis an d Russell is way to complicated for most of you. So they have to be the problem……….ignorance is bliss!!
March 1st, 2010 at 11:12 pm
Game film is always the best indicator. The three cone drill, positon drills and the bench press are always given more weight than the 40.
But just watching a player run can give you an indication of his balance and co-ordination.
A player could have an awkward gait that could lead to injuries down the road, and watching them run the 40 could reveal it.
March 1st, 2010 at 11:14 pm
RMR,
I think that he doesn’t think he can trust anyone now… and also that his stubborn pride won’t let him admit that he messed up his prized, beloved franchise and needs help from other people to fix it. It seems that he’s just saying, “It’s just a slight hiccup, I have it all under control, you will eventually see the master plan play out and know that I had it right from the start.”
To hire help now would be admitting that he has been inept. I don’t think that Al is capable of such a thing.

That the Davis being too old to do the scouting and player assessments is the problem. You’ve mentioned before you thought he was never the brains behind their success. That Ron Wolfe and others were running the show.
March 1st, 2010 at 11:20 pm
Priest,
True or false: The Raiders haven’t had a winning record since it had a full front-office staff.
One or two losing seasons in a row can be attributed to bad luck or a few rotten breaks on the field. We’re at the point now where you have to look at the people in positions of power OFF the field to find out why the ship is so off course… the people behind the team. Since Lombardi left, there are no “people” in the front office… there is only Al Davis, Amy Trask (species unknown), and Herrera (rodent of some sort).
Where would you like to place the blame? Are you going to list fifty random things that all coincided? Okay then… who is responsible for oversight on all of those things? Who failed to coordinate the franchise and prevent such disasters? Exactly.
March 1st, 2010 at 11:20 pm

Northern D, is my Ron Wolf theory far off from your Lombardi theory?
March 1st, 2010 at 11:24 pm
priest, I reject your assertion that I’m lying. I saw Howie Long say in one of those NFL films that when he came to the Raiders, there was no technical talk. It was all about getting on the field and battling. You can sit here all night and tell me I didn’t see what I know I saw. Knock yourself out. I don’t care.
March 1st, 2010 at 11:25 pm
MR, I asked you a simple question can you answer it?
March 1st, 2010 at 11:25 pm
Northern D, is everything you said about Lombardi, etc, a conspiracy theory, too? Why’s it only a conspiracy theory when it comes from me? What’s it called when it comes from you?
March 1st, 2010 at 11:26 pm
preist, i don’t know who howies position coach was and the question is irrelevant. I’m paraphrasing Long, not his coach.
March 1st, 2010 at 11:27 pm
Priest,
Learn to comprehend what you read. I never said we didn’t have scouts, I said that the scouting department was insufficient. I also said the front office isn’t complete. Are you saying that Al acting unilaterally without any people to serve as senior management partners is a “complete” front office?
March 1st, 2010 at 11:34 pm
The question directly relates to your point. Earl Leggett was his position coach and Earl ha dalready done a lot of film study on Howie and loved him he didn’t need to put him through a battery of test also on his proday other scouts from other teams were present and he diddn’t want to let on about the Raiders interets in Howie so he told him to get in a 3 point stance and explode off it. After that he left and Howie took it as no interest which was exactly what Earl wanted the other scouts to think. But once we drafted him he was extremely raw and Earl taught him everything and made him a HOFer.
Ture story.
March 1st, 2010 at 11:34 pm
NorthernD,
Per Priest’s persistent pestering: I believe it was the “America’s Team” special on the ‘83 Raiders.
March 1st, 2010 at 11:36 pm
priest, fascinating. So, how does that debunk what I said? I said I saw long say that when he came to the Raiders, it was just about rumbling. That’s what he said. You come on here and accuse me of lying. You’re really holding up your end of the deal on this whole respect thing, aren’t you? As*hole.
March 1st, 2010 at 11:36 pm
Priest,
In the real world, just because you say “ture (sic) story” after you say something, that doesn’t make it true. You should ask Al, Snyder, and JJ to explain that to you when you have lunch with them tomorrow after 18 holes in the morning. Do you still have Marcus Allen caddy for you guys?
March 1st, 2010 at 11:38 pm
Stevie you don’t know squat about our scouting dept. nada zilch nothing. I know those men because I’ve worked with them.
There are scouting dept. all ovr the NFL that is not as well put together as ours is. But you wouldn’t know that because you don’t NFL personnel you’re just running your mouth on a blog as if you do.
As I said if you want to know something ask.
March 1st, 2010 at 11:40 pm
Okay, you said that if I want to know something to ask.
Where and when did you work with the people in our scouting department and with whom specifically did you work?
March 1st, 2010 at 11:41 pm
MR you said they said just rumble and they didn’t teach him the game or at the very least you implied it.
March 1st, 2010 at 11:42 pm
preist, why do we have to know NFL personnel to know that our team sucks and needs drastic changes in the front office? Can’t a fan just read an almanac and see that his team’s sucked for 7 straight years? Why must we have had to have been employed in an NFL scouting department to have the expertise to look at a team’s 7 years losing record and say, “wow, they suck”?
March 1st, 2010 at 11:43 pm
priest, that’s what long said. He said that when he came to the Raiders, it wasn’t about all of the techinical stuff. It was about just putting on the pads and cracking. I know what I saw.

March 1st, 2010 at 11:48 pm
MR, that’s bullcrap when Hoie got here he had zero technigue NONE everything he learned he learned from Earl Leggettt who at that time was the preeminent Dline coach in this league. He taught Howie the 3tech and the 5tech well enough for him to make it to the HOF.
Don’t be foolish He also taught Greg Townsend, Bill Pickell and many others we went to SB because of Earl Leggett and Charlie Sumner. Don’t be stupid!!

Nothing wrong with a good conspricay theory.
I didn’t mention Lombardi at all. That was Alford.
I’d much rather read about a good conspiracy theory than all the back and forth name calling that goes on.
Besides, where there’s smoke, there’s fire.
Seriously, you seem to know quite a lot about the Davis early days. Where did he get the $180,000 to buy into the Raiders in the first place?

RMR,
I am totally on board with the Raiders teams of those years not being as good without Wolfe and Lombardi respectively. I’m not trying to say that Al is/was incompetent, just that everyone is better when they have great people working with them. Al, as he is TODAY, has done a bad job with no high-ranking front office personnel to assist him or with whom to collaborate.

Sorry Steve, but I’ve got to agree with Priest here. You sound like a guy regurgitating the same old garbage dork reporters say about the Raiders’ scouting department and the organization in general. Do you honestly have any real knoweledge about who the scouts are and how many are employed? I understand if you don’t. I don’t either. But it’s annoying to hear people run off at the mouth about it without real knowledge of the inner-workings of the organization. In the end, it’s all speculation. That’s why I do my best to stick to what I’m seeing ON the field.
March 1st, 2010 at 11:54 pm
NorthernD,
My guess is that Al had quite a few connections back in Brooklyn to help get the capital. Then again, he might have just gotten a loan from a bank… but to hear him talk about the old neighborhood… methinks there were some doins afoot.
March 1st, 2010 at 11:56 pm
TJ, I asked where and when you worked with them… so if you weren’t on staff, in what capacity did you “work” with them? FYI, staring at them through binoculars and using a sound-amplifier for the hearing impaired to listen to their conversations isn’t “working with them.”
March 1st, 2010 at 11:57 pm
just aint telling you bud, it’s none of your business. so let’s just say i’m lying ok
March 1st, 2010 at 11:57 pm
I’ll add my two cents.
I heard from Lombardi talking on the NFL network.
He said the Raiders scout did their work and made full assessments on all the players. ( I assume they have a full staff of competant scouts)
The problem was that Al would come down the day before the draft and change the order they had the players listed. Hence DHB gets moved ahead of Crabtree, etc.
And that came from Lombardi himself.
March 1st, 2010 at 11:59 pm
NorthernD,
That’s why I mentioned player-personnel and an insufficient scouting department together. The fact that Al no longer has a President of Football Operations and/or a GM to handle personnel decisions or advise him on such things is the reason we’ve drafted only three linemen in what, six years? You can have fifty scouts, but unless they have a full player-personnel department with which to coordinate, that department will be insufficient.
March 2nd, 2010 at 12:00 am
Even though you admitted it sarcastically, that’s good enough for me. Did you honestly think anyone besides Debo bought your lines of B.S. about all your ties?
March 2nd, 2010 at 12:03 am
I don’t think it matters if they have a GM. Al has always done that. The GM may have given a differing opinion, but I don’t think it has ever stopped Al from making the final call on a player, or coach.
The only advantage of a GM is that they are young enough to do the things Al can no longer physically do.
March 2nd, 2010 at 12:05 am
Debo,
Stevie is another one of these guy’s who has pinion that he convinced himdelf must be true. They’re so frustrated that they don’t know they conjure up any and everything hoping it makes sense.
Al Davis ahs what he feels he needs around him at this time wether we can call the guy a GM or not who knows but he has plenty of people around him that he trust some coaches some personnel people as well as others who may not be on staff but do work for him.
The Raiders will, start winning when all of this young talent starts to produce untill then they will struggle. Hopefully it ends this year.
March 2nd, 2010 at 12:08 am

I think that he doesn’t think he can trust anyone now… and also that his stubborn pride won’t let him admit that he messed up his prized, beloved franchise and needs help from other people to fix it. It seems that he’s just saying, “It’s just a slight hiccup, I have it all under control, you will eventually see the master plan play out and know that I had it right from the start.”
To hire help now would be admitting that he has been inept. I don’t think that Al is capable of such a thing.
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
Dude, why do you keep running your mouth about what Al’s thinking? Unless you’re going to surprise me and tell me you are great fiends with him and talk to him everyday, I’ve got to believe you don’t know sht about what he’s thinking. This isn’t the only organization that is struggling. There are lots of reasons that an organization goes through struggles. You’re just popping off.

Lol @ having an opinion and convincing myself that it’s true.
You are aware that you can look up the staff, right? Sorry bro, I stated facts about lack of people in certain positions… and the on-field product has been significantly less successful since certain positions became (and stayed) vacant. Argue with it all you want, but those are FACTS.

I’m with you man. I hope it ends too. The way 2008 ended, I was sure 2009 would be a jumping off point. But we had such a bad offseason heading into 2009. Not quite sure where to place the blame for that.
March 2nd, 2010 at 12:14 am
Am I the only one wondering if TJ and Debo are the same person? No one else agrees with either of them except the other… and Debo hadn’t posted in HOURS… until TJ called him by name in a post just a couple of minutes ago. Either they’re talking to each other outside the blog on phone or messenger or sitting in each other’s laps… or they’re the same person.
March 2nd, 2010 at 12:15 am
e could also say since the team hasn’t had a consistent QB the team hasn’t won. It could be that simple. That’s a fact as well. So which is more accurate?
March 2nd, 2010 at 12:16 am

No kidding. Don’t think Steve is a bad guy. But these generic criticisms of the organization are so lame. Come up with an original thought once in a while.
March 2nd, 2010 at 12:23 am
How was it unoriginal or generic to state a specific issue? It seems that whenever anyone makes an argument, you just insult their statements or the person making the statement rather than addressing the content of what was said. It’s an incredibly weak tactic in a debate and logical fallacy at its worst.
March 2nd, 2010 at 12:25 am
To be more clear, I didn’t say “the organization is messed up” or “Al sucks.” I stated exactly what problems I saw and how I thought they were detriments. There’s nothing generic about that, it’s as specific as specificity gets. Please address the issues presented if you want to try to attain a modicum of anything remotely resembling credibility.
March 2nd, 2010 at 12:27 am

Northern D, you’re right. These theories about people other than Al running the team are just nutty conspiracies. Al is the Raiders. Every great team the Raiders ever fielded was hand crafted by Al. And, the Raiders will be back. The losing of the past 7 years? Refs sabotaging us. Oh, wait, that’s a conspiracy theory too. Oops.
March 2nd, 2010 at 1:03 am
Northern D, what about Elway going to the Raiders, only for the league to stop it? Oh, darn, another conspiracy.
March 2nd, 2010 at 1:04 am

March 2nd, 2010 at 1:08 am
I know Rozelle and Davis had it in for each other.
I don’t think the refs are specifically told to flag the Raiders, but, I do think they know they won’t catch as much flak for making a bad call against the Raiders as they would for another team.
That superbowl with Jerome Bettis in Detroit was a ridiculous game by the refs. I know they play favorites, it’s just difficult to prove.
March 2nd, 2010 at 1:08 am

March 2nd, 2010 at 1:12 am
Interesting takes, Northern D. You go to Berkeley by any chance?
March 2nd, 2010 at 1:15 am
As for Al deliberately trying to lose? That’s hard to believe.
GG said it could be for tax reasons, before he gave it to his kid. That kind of makes sense.
But I just can’t see Al wanting to lose for any reason. He knows his time is nearly up. He’s desparate to win now. To cement his legacy.
The last thing he wants to do is have his last memories of the team in a complete state of disrepair.
March 2nd, 2010 at 1:16 am

March 2nd, 2010 at 1:27 am
MRM:
Priest knows for certain that Howie knew NOTHING about how to play football before we drafted him and that he not only didn’t know the rules of the game, but had actually never even SEEN a football… then, our D-Line coach hand-crafted Howie into a Hall of Famer… and Howie would never have even learned how to play the game, much less gotten to the Hall, if he had played for any team other than the Raiders. How does Priest know this? He was there. He was having lunch with Al Davis that day and was explaining exactly how to properly utilize the 4-3 defense. He then gave the entire staff a lecture on player evaluation and teaching technique from basic fundamentals up to advanced moves. He would show you the pictures or tell you about people who were there with him that could verify his claims… or even the year in which it happened… but that’s too much info to give.

Debo on Russell:
The guy never has happy feet. Very poised in the pocket and pays no attention to the rush. Tough as nails. Will step up in the pocket and fire the ball into thhe face of the rush without worrying about the inevitable punishment behind our line. Calm, cool and collected. Can shake off a bad play like it never happened and come back to make a big play. Has a flair for the dramatic with three game winning/tying drives this season to back it up. His arm strength is unquestioned, arguably the strongest arm in football. Forget throwing it 80 yards. It’s the velocity. He regularly fits balls into tight windows.

Never discount the ineptness of the Lions. They had a terrible pass defense, and if are considering trade talks for the #2.
I just see them screwing this up.

Yes, that’s his name…Is that true, Rockstar?

Hwnrdr: I’ve never read anything where Ford actually said he wanted to run fast to get drafted by Oakland. I’ve read many articles that said something similar, but it was light hearted joking type stuff.
saying Ford would be drafted 8th overall because he ran the 2nd fastest 40 ever. etc etc

I wonder why Mike Mayock and Deion and the entire panel is so caught up with speed if speed is so bad. Their entire focus what the kid times in the 40
yet everyone says it’s a sin when we do it. The best drill is the back pedal and transition drill. Because that’s what a corner does on every play.

I think we should offer them Gerard Warren and a 5th rounder in exchange for Grady Jackson & Sammie Lee Hill

Who is Priest talking to?
March 2nd, 2010 at 8:13 am
Priest, you are as paranoid and delusional as Davis himself.
You get handed your ass by one group here last night, and then log back on early the NEXT MORNING to argue the same thing with a totally different group of people?
Save your BS stories for your Raider scout “buds” – this group ain’t buying.

Lions OL: Jeff Backus, Kirk Barton, Gosder Cherilus, Damion Cook, Dylan Gandy, Dan Gerberry, Corey Hilliard, Jon Jansen, Daniel Loper, Don Muhlbach, Stephen Peterman, Kurt Quarterman, Dominic Raiola, Manny Ramirez & Roy Schuening.
43 sacks allowed last year!
running game (Smith/Morris/Brown) only produced 1260 yards & 6 TD’s
again … YUCK!
If the Lions don’t go OL or DL i’ll be very surprised

If there is truly an open competition at the QB position, JaMoron Russell will NOT be the starting QB.
In fact, if there is a true competiton — one not based on draft position and salary, but only on merit — for a ROSTER spot at QB, then JaMoron won’t even make the team.
Has JaMoron been hindered by a horrid OL and inexperienced WRs ? Without question.
But the bottom line is JaMoron is too innaccurate and too stupid to succeed at the NFL level, even with a stellar supporting cast.
One day, in the not too distant future, when JaMoron is out of the NFL and his name is synonomous with ‘the biggest bust’ in NFL history — all of JaMoron’s supporters will wonder how they ever believed this POS had a snowball’s chance in hell at being a franchise QB.
Top notch NFL QBs must have accuracy and intelligence.
JaMoron has neither.
The greatest addition the Raiders can make is one of subtraction.
DUMP RUSSELL.
