Howard gets second-round tender

Linebacker Thomas Howard received a second-round tender from the Raiders Thursday, beat writer Steve Corkran reports.
After making $535,000 last season, Howard is in line for a $1.759 million salary in 2010 should he remain with the Raiders. If Howard receives an offer from another team and the Raiders don’t match, they’d receive a second-round draft pick in return.
While Kirk Morrison’s original round tender would indicate the Raiders may be planning on a new middle linebacker, it would appear they’re open to Howard returning.
Had the Raiders given the original round tender to Howard, his salary would have been $1.176 million and they still would have received a second-round pick as compensation. Howard was a second-round pick in 2006.
With the second-round designation, it’s an extra $583,000 for Howard. Not sure how to interpret that other than wanting to give a fair market offer to a potential starter who they expect could remain with the team.

The Raiders have no choice but to draft Williams. You can’t start Ricky Brown at MLB and expect him to do much under the best of circumstances. Its key they start getting better lineplay since Davis does not value linebackers
