Morris receives tender

Guard/center Chris Morris received an original-round tender from the Raiders Wednesday, his agent said.
Morris, with four accrued seasons, would receive a salary of $1,176,000 should he sign the tender. He is free to field offers from other teams, with the Raiders having the right of first refusal. If Oakland declined to match an offer, they would receive a seventh-round draft pick _ the round Morris was selected in 2006.
(Correction: Morris has three accrued seasons _ he played in only five games as a rookie _ and his salary would be $1,101,000).
No word as yet on Oakland’s other restricted free agents, including linebackers Kirk Morrison and Thomas Howard.

More than $1 million for Chris Morris? Seems a little expensive, no? Kind of reminds me when they tendered Ricky Brown last year and paid him something like $2 million for the season.

Ricky Brown is a good player (when healthy) , but 1.5 million for 1 player who was largely unknown & unproven around the league was very steep …
we could have let him test the waters in FA and re-signed him for peanuts later. same thing with Morris here.

I think Williams might go this time. He’s a solid special teams player and everyone says he’s a cool guy. As a reserve linebacker, he was hardly a major factor in our struggles.
Still, we need to get a look at some of these younger LBs (Norris, Nixon, draft picks, etc.) and that doesn’t leave much room for a guy who’s strictly a special teams player and a liability in coverage at LB.

I don’t buy that Brown is a good player. Terrible? No. But not somebody I’d want as a starting LB on my team. He does have some value as a special teams player and guy who can fill in at either OLB or MLB though.

I have this bad feeling the Chargers are going to scoop up Gerhart. What do you guys think of Gerhart vs. Matthews. I know they both played that No. Cal. area so you all probably have seen them alot.
I’ve actually seen both play several times. They’re both impressive. I’d give the edge to Gerhart though. I just think he has more intangibles (vision, balance, etc.) and Matthews had some injury history earlier in his career. I know most draftniks are going the other way, but I’m real high on Gerhart.
The other RB from Fresno — Lonyae Miller — could also prove to be a steal in the later rounds. He looks like a solid guy to have in your rotation.
This draft is absolutely loaded with RB prospects. I think if the Raiders were smart they’d try to get anything they could for Fargas right now and get a young guy to go with Bush & DMac right now. Fargas could have some value to a team trying to win now who’d like a tough, hardworking veteran for a year or two and wouldn’t mind giving up a 5th rounder or later to get him. New England again?

I hear you. And I think our special teams has been excellent the last few years — and not just the kickers. The coverage has been great and up until JLH fell apart last year and we had no KR the return game was also pretty excellent (5 TD returns in 2008). However, with major question marks at our starting LB positions considering our inability to stop the run, I don’t think we can load up our LB depth chart with too many guys who are good at special teams but have shown they have little to no value as everydown LBs. I think we’d be better off with some young guys who can potentially push for starting LB slots.

The fact is we can’t truly complain about our linebackers unless we fix our line first. Maybe we can fix both in the draft and in free agency.

I’d do that deal in a heartbeat but I don’t see anyone giving up anything for JaMarcus right now with his $9.5 million salary. You trade for the player and you’re stuck with the contract, unless you can rework it you’d have to cut him.

Jahri Evans, New Orleans Saints (27) – Restricted FA (UFA-CBA)
Jahri Evans continues to grade out as the team’s best run-blocking linemen week after week, but this year made great strides in pass-protection. The Saints have done a nice job of efficiently running the ball through the middle and on the right side of the line. His continual high level of play and positive, team-first attitude should translate to a high-end offensive guard contract at year’s end. He earned a nod as a 1st team All-Pro, which should add a couple million to his contract. Expect the Saints, who have nothing but positive things to say towards Evans, to richly reward him for his hard work and production, even though they may have more flexibility with Evans potentially becoming a restricted free agent.
Saints did not offer him a tender. Lets get this guy

Gerhart couldn’t carry Mathews jock he is so much better than Toby it ain’t even funny. Vision are you kidding me hate to repeat myself 3+ 60 yrd TD last yr vs Boise and that’s with 8-9 guys in the box cause Fresno qb was garbage and can’t throw the ball downfield. While it’s true Mathews has health problems his So yr last year he took a helmet to helmet shot and got a concussion could happen to anyone.

Jared Allen and the two Williams men up front have paved way for left end Ray Edwards to emerge this season. In fact, according to the stats, teams have actually had more difficult running over his side than at Jared Allen. Edwards also has 8.5 sacks and 6 stuffs in the regular season. In the first game of the playoffs, Edwards stepped up his play and proved to be a nuisance nearly every play, recording 3 sacks and 2 stuffs in the game. The Vikings should keep try to keep the league’s best pass rush in tact by re-signing the former Purdue standout. Edwards is a complete defensive end who will have a number of interested teams this offseason as the best young and complete defensive end on the market.

Russell might agree to a pay reduction if we were to trade him to a playoff team with a solid supporting cast on offense.
T-Jax is a free agent and Favre may not come back. so I suppose Russell at a reduced cost would compete with Sage Rosenfels to be the starter. At that point he’s not our problem and if he gets beat out by Sage most of us would die laughing … but it wouldn’t surprise anybody!

Too much negative thinking going on. Look out your window. Past the rain. See that? That’s spring coming, where hope is eternal for Raider fans. Remember: there’s no salary cap this year; Mr. Davis has been selling off small parts of the team to free up more cash; and he says he wants to win two more super bowls. Yeah, he’s crazy, crazy like a fox, and I’m sure he can still remember his neighbors buying a Super Bowl in ‘94. What if he were to do something crazy like:
sign Dunta Robinson and pair him with Nnamdi;
sign Fred Robbins (DT, been starting for NYG, connection w/ Coach Wauffle);
sign Chad Clifton (T) and Casey Wiegman (C), players with zone-blocking scheme experience, thus alleviating the NEED to go OL w/ the 1st pick;
draft Rolando McClain,
and trade for Michael Vick (heard he could be had for a 5th, a lil 3-way competition at QB).
Yeah, its crazy. Just like something Mr. Davis would do. And it sure beats thinking about how we would be if we made as many moves as we did last year (read: 0).
P.S. – Other ZBS OL that should be available this year: Jason Spitz, Levi Jones, Tyson Clabo, Ben Hamilton, Chester Pitts, Mark Tauscher, and Casey Rabach. Also, in regards to the 3-way competition at QB, if there’s no salary cap, shouldn’t there also be no salary cap hits? (read: cut JaLardass!)

We need an OT, DT, and MLB (move Kirk to SLB).
For DTs: I like Suh, Dan Williams, Lamar Houston, and Price more than the rest. McCoy reminds me of Seymour a lot, so I wouldn’t draft him.
OTs: Okung, T Williams, A David, B Campbell, and Brown from USC. For RTs: I like Sam Young, and Kyle Calloway.
MLB: I like McClain, Spikes, Boris Lee, and Micah Johnson. My Fav LB in this draft is SPOON!
We need 3 of those players to improve.

I am a little over 6′4″ and I weigh 270 lbs. I used to tip the scales at over 290 lbs back when I was playing ball. My 40 time leaves a lot to be desired, although I imagine I am quicker now than when I was playing. I played on both sides of the line, but I loved playing DT. I occupied people while the faster guys got to the qb. I used to love that I would get double teamed. It felt good to know that it took more than one guy to hold me down. It has been years since those days, thanks for reminding me, I miss it and Madden doesn’t quite cut it. Maybe I can join an old guy’s league…

Beecham, I don’t get it. Are you not going to be old someday? Are you not going to have trouble getting around? Do you honestly think you’re going to be like Hugh Hefner, like every other loser who makes fun of old people? Do you think you’re going to just age like wine? Well, here’s a short litmus test. Take your age now, and look up what Hugh Heffner was doing when he was that age. I’ll bet you he wasn’t sitting around on a blog. He was in great shape, looked about 10 years his junior, and had a great life. Genetics, bud. That’s what it all boils down to. And if you have Hefner genes, I doubt you’d be on a sports blog so much. Doesn’t quite fit the profile. You’d either be working on your business or on a boat with 5 women. You’re on a blog. It has been many years and I sure do miss it. It will be very hard for me to not push my son in a similar path as far as sports go. He is a big football kid and he is only 3. He already knows to tackle with your head up and he is a bit of a dirty player. If I tackle him and get him down, every once in a while he will jab me in the face cuz he’s pissed that I shut him down. I wonder why so many racists have taken up the Raiders as their team? Maybe it’s just the pirate image. lol. They are pirates, that’s for sure… if you know what I mean. No doubt there’s some repressed, well, you know, going on there. But Al Davis really was one of the first owners to not only welcome minorities to his team, but he also let them be minorities, partake in their culture. He didnt’ demand that black people got crew cuts and acted white, like other NFL teams in the ’60s. Yet, so many of these emasculated, cyber bigots are Raider fans. I played JC baseball, and once I moved to Vegas I only played softball here and there.
Two years ago my wife got me setup with this Air Force hardball team in this adult league and it was so great to back out there. I struck out my first 4 times and ended up pulling a groin, but I had a blast and can’t wait until this next summer league.

We all have so much time before we can’t do it all. I was the oldest guy on the team, and these cats were smoking cigs between innings, screwing around before the game.
I was going through a half an hour streching session before the games and still pulled a muscle, lol!!!
But when you are out there, you realize it is the end of the line, and you just take it all in and love every minute of it.

Beecham, I don’t mind being called a tattle tale. I would never inform on someone for merely doing something that isn’t bothering other people, like pot or something. Heck, I don’t even care if two guys want to go outside and box. But I felt what I saw yesterday was a racial threat. Felt I had to do something. It was out of my moral conscience. That’s all.
