Asomugha won’t join Revis
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, March 4th, 2010 at 7:39 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Less than a half-hour into free agency, one popular offseason rumor has been scuttled.
(Jumped the gun by nearly 90 minutes on that one _ free agency began at 9 p.m. Pacific time)
ESPN is reporting the San Diego Chargers have traded cornerback Antonio Cromartie to the New York Jets in exchange for a third-round draft pick that could eventually become a second.
So much for Nnamdi Asomugha’s Pro Bowl request to join Darrelle Revis as the NFL’s premiere cornerback tandem with the Jets.
Unless, of course, the Jets plan on making Cromartie a highly-paid nickel back.

Trade for Ngata!!
March 4th, 2010 at 7:47 pm
imagine a DL with Seymour and Ngata at DTs! Who needs DEs?!
March 4th, 2010 at 7:50 pm
wow. how come we didnt get rob ryan
March 4th, 2010 at 7:50 pm
Ngata doesn’t play DT!!!!
Kelly Gregg is the NT for the Ravens, and has been for 8 years.
Could Ngata play DT in a 4-3…probably. But when Gregg went down in 2008, they kept Ngata at DE and started an undrafted rookie in place of Gregg.
March 4th, 2010 at 7:51 pm
I wish we had Haloti Ngata.
How about we trade Howard to a Cover 2 team for draft picks.
March 4th, 2010 at 7:52 pm
Al,
Don’t waste your money on Eugene, Routt, R Brown, and Morris.(Kirk, TH, and Condo are OK). Invest In C Dansby, J Peppers, or trade for a great young talent and pay them.
STOP paying these bachips all that money. Warren, Walker, Fargas, EUK, and even TK!

RaiderDebo,
Besides blind hope, what makes you think JaBigmac is going to improve?
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
Dude, the “JaBigmac” BS clearly identifies you as a hater so any answer to your question probably won’t satisfy you. All I can say is that at times, though there weren’t very many, the guy CARRIED us to victory. We don’t beat KC or Denver without him. The best this team as looked in the last 4 years was the two-game stretch to end the season in 2008, behind JR. For the 1st time in his career, he’ll have the same WRs he had at at the end the previous season. I’m expecting the OL play to improve and have my fingers crossed that with increased attention from Cable, the run game will be better too. Our young receivers are a year older and hopefully Chaz stays healthy throughout training camp. With all the BS from the media and the hater fans, I expect JR to quietly come back here with a chip on his shoulder. We’ll see.
March 4th, 2010 at 7:57 pm
We know dude, we know!
You have a man crush on Bruce.
March 4th, 2010 at 7:58 pm
The Raider ALL-STAR team. Imagine the possibilities.
Peppers
Dansby
resign warren for less $ and let him backup Kelly.
Got Peppers and Seymore are interchangable with eachother at end and tackle, moving them around to confuse the D. Shaunassey/Ellis rotate in on other side. Howard/Dansby/Scott @ LB – assume Morrison gone but backs up all positions if he stays.
You know the secondary. Maybe add another CB in later round – such as W Thurmond.
Mawae
Thomas Jones – can teach our other backs how to play the position – he still has plenty in the tank IMO.
Use #8 on a tackle.
Use 2nd or 3rd on another tackle or guard who can play multiple spots along the oline.
Insert your option with the rest of the picks or FA prospects.
Interested to hear your thoughts… NOT the ones that say not possible b/c I realize that, but on the eve of a interesting FA period… Lets have some fun.
March 4th, 2010 at 7:59 pm
MWfan,
Can he still play? He is old.
RR,
I would trade TH for draft picks.
March 4th, 2010 at 7:59 pm
No way you can “expect” Russell to come with a chip on his shoulder. Change the word expect for “hope” or “wish”.
Everything he gets from the media and “hater” fans he deserves. If he was on a different team you would be KILLING the kid.
March 4th, 2010 at 8:00 pm
O,
Not sure why one would think he would be ultra successful as a 4-3 DT.
He is a borderline Pro Bowl 3-4 DE. A guy who will make 3 or 4 pro bowls in his career, only because he plays on one of the best D’s in the league.
March 4th, 2010 at 8:01 pm
Haloti Ngata would be a godsend to this Raider team….might as well be talking about Peyton Manning coming to Oakland because neither will ever happen…
Vegas,
Bruce Gradkowski was cut by Cleveland, Tampa and St. Louis….he was brought in here to COMPETE for the 3rd string QB job behind JaDavis and Jeff Garcia.
As you know, Garcia quit and Russell might as well have quit. Gradkowski was the next guy available. He started 3 games. In those 2 games he did okay…..that’s it.
My guess is that Troy Smith would have been the starter in 2008 had he not gotten sick. Troy Smith was never cut by his team…in fact they tendered him today…
I don’t think much of either QB…but to me the only difference between the two is luck and few times on the waiver wire.
March 4th, 2010 at 8:02 pm
Thank goodness Cromartie was traded ot the Jets. I was worried the Chargers were going to hustle us into trading Cromartie for Michael Bush.
But since Fargas is going to be cut, Bush will now be our undisputed starter….DMAC won’t hold up as usual
March 4th, 2010 at 8:03 pm
SnB,
How do you know Fargas is gonna be cut?
March 4th, 2010 at 8:03 pm
Seymour holds the point of attack. Perfect 3-4 end and perfect 4-3 tackle.
All tackles should hold point of attack and fill gaps.
On passing down a 3 technique should be swapped in to penetrate.
March 4th, 2010 at 8:03 pm
This is a fine offseason so far.
Let’s hope we finally get a run stuffing DT worthy of starting on day1 in the draft.
No 40x workout warriors
March 4th, 2010 at 8:05 pm
Cromartie for Bush?? A starting Pro Bowl corner for a backup RB that has never even approached a 1000 yards. Sure the Chargers would have jumped all over that.
March 4th, 2010 at 8:05 pm
Why is this a “fine” off season?
March 4th, 2010 at 8:06 pm
SnB,
That is your guess that Troy would have started. He was competing for the job, that’s it. Didn’t start a single preseason game.
OK in his few games? He beat a playoff team, the Super Bowl champs on the road, and had the best 4th quarter any Oakland Raider ever had. Won NFL offensive player of the week. Was on pace for another 300 yard game when he got hurt.
OK is a bit of an understatement no?
March 4th, 2010 at 8:06 pm
Vegas,
You’re right. Should’ve double-checked on Smith’s accuracy stats. Not sure why I remembered them being that high. Still, in his two full seasons as a starter, he completed 62.9% and 65.3%. Very, very good.
– His TD/INT ratio in those two years: 46/10
– His passer ratings in those two years: 162.66 & 161.91
– The percentage of 1st place Heisman votes he received: 86.7% (A Heisman record).
And while Smith didn’t officially have the QB job in Baltimore before he got sick, he was an overwhelming favorite: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3560175
March 4th, 2010 at 8:09 pm
Chris Johnson > Cromartie
Stanford Routt = Cromartie
Cromartie was great his rookie year but a disappointment since. Teams obviously figured him out — or he got complacent. That’s why he was just traded for a 3rd-round pick … in next year’s draft.
March 4th, 2010 at 8:09 pm
MWfan,
J Peppers, A Kampman, and Dansby are players that we should consider, and make room by cutting Walker, Fargas, Warren, and TK if needed.
March 4th, 2010 at 8:11 pm
SnB,
QB is one of those weird postions, to where you never really no until you put them on the field.
You have guys with rocket arms who suck (Akili Smith), guys with noodle arms who are great (Drew Brees). 1st round picks who flop (Couch and many more), and 7th round picks who win more Super Bowls than anyone (Brady). Guys who suck for years, and than put it together for 5-6 good years (Vinny T) and guys who make Pro Bowls early and are out of the league in a few years (Aaron Brooks).
You never know my friend. Talent and draft status are no rule of thumbs when looking at successful NFL QB’s.
March 4th, 2010 at 8:11 pm
Vegas,
Troy Smith and Bruce Gradkowski are a push. Few people are overly impressed with 8 quarters of work. They haven’t forgotten 4 years of futility
March 4th, 2010 at 8:11 pm
Stan Routt starts at CB next year opposite Nnamdi. You’ve got to know that.
March 4th, 2010 at 8:12 pm
And Vegas,
I’m with you on Gradkowski. I’d just like to have some depth and two real options at what is by far the most important position on the field. Let those two battle it out — assuming of course JaBigmac doesn’t go ahead and fulfill his potential overnight.
March 4th, 2010 at 8:14 pm
Vegas,
I agree that its not about arm strength and all that. Its a total package.
I just think you are way to excited about a plodding QB that had a few good quarters of football.
Just because JaDavis was terrible does not make this journeyman QB anything but a next guy standing.
There is NO team in the NFL that would want this guy as the starter based on his body of work
But if he starts, I hope he does well. I don’t care who starts, I just want to see progress towards building a Super Bowl team.
March 4th, 2010 at 8:14 pm
Couldn’t we got Cromartie for a third rounder?
March 4th, 2010 at 8:15 pm
I’d even be happy if we could just land 1 of those 3 O. Also would go with Mawae, only missed 2 games in last 2 years and helped lead the way for C Johnson to rush for a ton of yards.
March 4th, 2010 at 8:15 pm
Steve Young, Vinny T, Kurt Warner….wouldn’t we take any of these guys.
When they were 26, they were worse off than Bruce.
Bruce could be out of the league in 3 years, and could make 3 Pro Bowls. You never know.
Matt Moore might be the next hot young QB. He played at 3 colleges, was undrafted, univited to the NFL combine, was released by the Cowboys and was an afterthought his first year in Carolina.
He could make the Pro Bowl next year.
Sit back, keep an open-mind, and hope like hell Bruce can get some protection and can help us win games. I think he gives us our best shot.
March 4th, 2010 at 8:15 pm
Since the Super Bowl is the long-term goal….if Gradkowski is indeed the starter…Davis had BETTER bring someone in.
Gradkowski’s ceiling is low and I would hate to have to figure that out 5 or 7 years later
March 4th, 2010 at 8:16 pm
If you think Al Davis will keep a guy like Stan Routt and not Russell, then I’ll just say I’ll believe it when I see it.
March 4th, 2010 at 8:16 pm
SnB,
How do you know Fargas will get dropped?
What has made this a fine offseason?
March 4th, 2010 at 8:17 pm
Vegas,
Good QBs RARELY just fall in someones lap. I also don’t believe in fairy tales.
If Gradkowski was the man, some team would gladly give up a 2nd round pick and $3million dollars.
But, like I said, cheer the kid on. He’s certainly a good kid if unremarkable.
March 4th, 2010 at 8:19 pm
Jhill,
Chris Johnson will start this year and play well. He’s a good cornerback. Routt will have to beat out Johnson. No big deal.
The Routt contract is only for 1 year. I am sure they will review progress at the end of next year.
The secondary is not the biggest issue with this defense anyway.
March 4th, 2010 at 8:19 pm
Chris,
I was never really that impressed with Troy in college, but admitadly, I think the Big 10 blows.
I am for competition, and trust what Hue is doing. If he wants Troy, I support him.
I just don’t think he would beat out Bruce. If he did, I would be a Troy Smith fan.

Because Adam Scheffter (spelling) said so. Because I can see it coming. Can’t be paying guys like Fargas and Warren starter money only to get backup or worse results.
Those two will either be cut or restructured. Neither is a starter in this league.
Fargas will catch on with someone as a backup running back.
Warren will be out of the league…just like Sands.
Tommy Kelly should be up for review too!

That’s a bunch of BS!! If he was on another team and was faced with the circumstances he was faced with here, I’d still be sticking up for him. I’m not dumb enough to think that the success or failure of qbs in this leauge is entirely up to them. Gil Brandt said it best: No position is more important than qb, but no other position is more dependent on everyone around him doing his job. And I refuse to just use his bad games this year to judge his whole career. He had an encouraging 1st year as a starter. I’ve always defended guys like Lineart and Quinnn. Would you be bashing anyone else in his position this bad?
March 4th, 2010 at 8:24 pm
SnB,
I disagree with the “rarely fall in lap” line.
It happens almost every year. Matt Moore last year looks like one. Kurt Warner fell into the lap of two teams. Romo was undrafted. We know the Brady story. Hassleback was a 6th rounder.
Not as uncommon as you think.
March 4th, 2010 at 8:25 pm
CJ is making 2 million and Routt is making 3. CJ was on the other end of most of the big plays we gave up last year, and we didn’t miss him at all against the Ravens. 1st and 3rd rd tender this year, and you think we’ll let him walk next year? Why so the next guy in line John Holland can get a shot?
Routt is starting man. And Cable identified the secondary as a major need. We don’t have but 3 corners on the roster so how can you say it’s not an issue?
March 4th, 2010 at 8:28 pm
If Jamarcus was around a structured environment, he would probably already be successful.
But he is not. The Raiders don’t provide that structure, so we need a head-strong firey-leader.
If you got one that is more talented than Bruce, let me know. Until than, Bruce it is.
Jamarcus is damaged goods. Sucks for him, and especially us fans, but you have to call a spade a spade.

——————————————————
What does that mean? Last game you saw him in, you admit that he looked better than ever. We even went over the 2 turnovers and you saw that the Oline let the QB down again.
What does damaged goods mean, lol?
March 4th, 2010 at 8:37 pm
Jamarcus is working out in AZ though so lookout! LOL!!
March 4th, 2010 at 8:40 pm
Vegas,
Those other QBs you mentioned were not in the same class as Gradkowski. I’ll give you Warner…he came from nothing. But those other guys were drafted or selected by their teams with a plan to develop them into something.m
Gradkowski got cut from 3 bad teams in rapid order and was brought into Oakland to compete for the 3rd string job.
Now, again, I don’t want to hate on the kid, he needs to keep working hard and ignore comments from people like me.
But as a fan and observer, you cannot be placing hope that this kid is going to evolve into a top tier Super Bowl caliber QB. If it happens, good for us…but it will be because of dumb luck. Not because of anything Gradkowski has shown to date.
It is not rational to think this guy will be anything but a backup based on TWO GAMES, 3x cut, and a pedestrian college pedigree
March 4th, 2010 at 8:41 pm
and let me be clear to the rest of the group
A terrible JaDavis DOES NOT MEAN a Pro-Bowl caliber Gradkowski!
If Gradkowski is your guy…you better draft somebody!

I posted earlier in the day and yesterday that I thought Gerard Warren could be out of here because of his shoddy performance and bloated contract.
The fact that Fargas (3.8 yds per carry) can’t catch 1 TD is on the block should not be a surprise to anyone.
The Raiders have to pay for production…not just pay guys because they are cool to have around or they have certain elements but are not the total package.
Bring’em back as backups if you wish. But they aren’t starters by any stretch.
Like I said:
Fargas might catch on as a backup running back / short-yardage back
Warren will be out of the league ala Terdell Sands…Warren will get a tryout and be cut.
March 4th, 2010 at 8:46 pm
Jhill,
Maybe Routt starts over Chris Johnson. Fine with me. I don’t care about the secondary too much right now.
Teams don’t really throw much on us right now because, as Jerry pointed out, they are busy attacking the 29th ranked run defense.
So Davis can do what he wishes with his favorite positions (CB, FS, SS) as long as he doesn’t draft any more of them in the first 3 rounds
March 4th, 2010 at 8:48 pm
Dont see Fargas getting cut. It makes a weak running game weaker.

Ron,
If you can admit that it’s not all on him, than how can you bash him like that? If I’m Al Davis, I know that this guy hasn’t been given the best chance to succeed here. I know that by firing Kiffen and then waiting to let Cable know that he had the job, thereby causing him to lose key members of his staff, that it set Russell back. He ends 2008 well and for his efforts we hand him DHB and another rookie picked in the 4th round as wideouts??? He came in a few pounds overweight (everyone’s basis for his “terrible” work ethic), but on a list of reasons why he struggled last year, that’s way down on the totem pole in my opinion. If I’m Al, JR gets a mulligan, period.

Fargas is a backup running back. Whether he stays or goes will not have a measurable impact on this team’s end result. He is not a running back that takes over games…he blocks well, runs hard, has a great attitude but doesn’t produce much.
Runningbacks should be getting in 4.5 and up yds per carry, they should have some long runs, they should score TDs
Fargas doesn’t do that enough and he’s taking carries away from guys that have the potential to do those things
March 4th, 2010 at 8:54 pm

Debo,
1) He will continue to fail if for no other reason than the organization is getting worse, not better. There continues to be no improvement in any areas that need to be strong for a young QB to succeed.
2) I dont like him, I am not going to deny that. Dont like the way he carries himself, dont like how he blames everyone but himself and I dont like his game. Never have.
March 4th, 2010 at 8:58 pm
I’ve seen way too many middling QBs in Oakland to get excited about two games from Bruce Gradkowski.
The Raiders deserve a top tier QB. So if he’s not on the roster (and it doesn’t look like it) then they better look for one in free agency (doubtful) or draft someone.
No GM worth his salt is going into a season(s) happy to have a QB with Gradkowski’s pedigree at the helm
Again, QBs are so valuable. If Gradkowski can be had for only a 2nd round pick..why are there no takers? And why only a 2nd round tender? Why not a 1st and a 3rd like Matt Moore in Carolina?
Why? Matt Moore is starting in Carolina. Gradkowski? He only starts because JaDavis keeps messing up and being slothful…not because he (Gradkowski) is tearing things up on his own.

Doesn’t matter now.

This is the same question I’ve been asking. It’s obvious Al believes Standford Routt is more valuable to the Raiders than Bruce Gradkowski. Hell, he only as valuable to us as Hirame Eugene. Lol! The answer to your question is that Grads faces a huge uphill battle to start here. He’ll have to be twice as good as he was in the Pittsburg game. By the way Vegas, Pittsburg was on a three-game losing streak when they played us. I think it’s very unlikely that he starts.

SnB,
Or… if you live in REALITY and not in “excuse” land. Mike Bush didnt start because he isnt good enough.

Thats just what Cromartie is a nickle back, he is a liability against the run and as soft as a cone at Dairy Queen.
I have always said that Revis would become a Raider long before Nnamdi became a Jet.

Chris In Ny,
Kindly list all the nobodies too.
Quite frankly, I don’t see Gradkowski in that league either. Gradkowski is not even in the NFL had JaDavis not been such a cataclysmic BUST to date.
All those guys you listed up top got on a team and stuck in the league for a while.
Kurt Warner is the only miracle story of the bunch

Fair enough. We will see what happens now that we have a professional coach running the offense.

Chris,
I was never really that impressed with Troy in college, but admitadly, I think the Big 10 blows.

I’m not a fan/hater of the Big 10, but come on. They’re a legitimate conference that produces top NFL talent every year. As for QBs, 2 of the 3 best in the NFL in this era — Brady & Brees — are from the Big 10.

With the kirk morrison for a third tender, I smell a taylor mays conversion from safety to lb pick at #8 in the draft this year. Watch and see. Als probably thinking we may can get bruce campbell in the second.
