How much cash does Al have?

Conventional wisdom over the past few years is that the Raiders are hurting financially.

They added new investors a couple of years back. They’re playing before crowds in the 30,000-range. Forbes magazine ranked Oakland 32nd in 2009 in terms of franchise value.

But as free agency opens at 9 p.m. tonight on the West Coast, never underestimate Davis’ ability to strike for a player he really wants.

The Raiders spend little on P.R., support staff and look to cut corners in every way possible except the acquisition of talent.

Here’s just some of the money the Raiders are scheduled to pay out this year:

– More than $16 million in bonuses and salary to Nnamdi Asomugha. (His salary is only $775,000).

– $12.38 million to Richard Seymour as the exclusive franchise player.

– $9.45 million to JaMarcus Russell.

– $5.75 million to safety Michael Huff.

– $4.5 million to defensive tackle Tommy Kelly.

– $3.268 million to first- and third round tender corner Stanford Routt.

– $2.6 million to cornerback Chris Johnson.

– $2.6 million to wide receiver Javon Walker (guaranteed _ they pay it even if they cut him).

– $2.6 million to Shane Lechler and $2 million to Sebastian Janikowski

– $2.5 million to defensive end Greg Ellis.

– Just under $7 million to second-round tender free agents Bruce Gradkowski, Thomas Howard, Jon Condo and Hiram Eugene.

– A little over $2.5 million to Kirk Morrison if he doesn’t come back with an offer sheet.

That’s nearly $60 million spent on 16 players on what will eventually be a 53-man roster, and doesn’t even include bonus payments which aren’t available to the likes of Darren McFadden and Robert Gallery. McFadden’s salary is $470,000 and Gallery’s $1.6 million. Nor does it include what it will take to pay the No. 8 overall pick in the NFL draft.

ESPN is reporting the possible demise of Justin Fargas and Gerard Warren because of upcoming bonus payments, although don’t rule out the possibility of one or both remaining with the team, either signing after being cut or adjusting their scheduled bonuses.

There is no salary cap, so Davis can spend as much as he wants, and at least Raiders fans won’t have to concern themselves with an owner saving up his cash for the lockout 2011 lockout.

The point is this _ if Davis is even thinking about inserting himself into the Julius Peppers sweepstakes, which begin in a few hours, or has his eyes on Karlos Dansby, let’s dispense with the stories about how the Raiders don’t have enough cash on hands to compete with the higher revenue teams.

Good to see a member of the media tell it like it is. Going back to when Tim Brown was on the team every year the media wrote how Al Davis was broke, could not sign a high draft pick or free agents or even retain his own players. Each year not only did it turn out to be false but Al Davis and his actions went to the other end of the scale in what he spent or did.

As for these investors, Mr. Davis did buy out the family members of a partner awhile back. He never owned this % before and for him to resell it at a profit after clearing up problems he had with the prior owner does not mean you are walking the street.

What other owner will back up his words of wanting to win with his pocket book as much as Mr. Davis, not many. That is what makes me so sick, this new generation of so called Raider Fans are light wieght and are some of the worse fans I have seen in the NFL.

Just as character of a team or players come out during the rough or bad times, so does the character of a teams fans. And I am sorry to say that we have some real punks calling themselves Raiders fans these days.

Mr Davis knows the only way to shut these clowns up or the media is to win and he will get the team back to the top. But a better owner a fan could not ask for, I would not trade Mr.Davis for every other owner in the NFL and that is a fact.

The article is on target. Davis has the resources. But I think its more because Al Davis probably doesn’t have the profitability/return on investment pressure as others.

    For example,

    1. Davis is not paying off a large debt for a new stadium
    2. Davis acquired the team years ago. So he’s not paying off debt from a recent purchase
    3. As the article points out, Raider infrastructure is light….whether that’s a good thing is up for debate
    4. Al Davis is not a busienss man…he’s a football man. So he might not care about maximizing his profit or earning a particular return on investment
    5. He’s older. He’s probably shielded enough personal assets and doesn’t need the money from the team

All speculation on my part I admit.

  • buckeyeraider

    SNNY
I couldn’t agree more. Al has his faults and warts like any human being. And god knows he’s made his share of mistakes as a GM, both in the draft and free agency. But this man burns to win. Some of the comments in here kill me. I think many Raider fans are spoiled and have a sense of entitlement due to the past greatness of the Raiders. When he is gone, not only will the Raiders miss him, but all of the NFL. Love him or hate him, he is one of the last remaining links to a bygone era of pro football.. The era of Lombardi, Halas, Paul Brown. I think when Al goes it will sort of be like NASCAR without Dale Earnhardt, the game will go on and prosper, but it will never be the same.

Have to admit I am pleased with the offseason moves thusfar…

I’ve been calling for a diminished/to no role for Warren, Fargas and Kelly. Today we learn that 2 of the 3 overpaid players will be jettisoned. Let’s see what offers are out there.

Fargas, he will get some attention for he can spell another back

Warren? He will be out of the league like Terdell Sands (another predict on my part)

Extending tenders to Routt, Howard etc…I am fine with. Its not my money. Davis is wasting his money though…but I could care less in an uncapped year.

    So what’s should be next….

    1. Cut or restructure Tommy Kelly
    2. Cut Javon Walker
    3. Restructure Michael Huff down (if he’s cut say hello to Taylor Mays, which would be terrible)

Raiders need to draft Dan Williams. Period end of story…..I would hold off on OT. Mario Henderson did a good enough job and when Gallery is in he’s good.

Draft RT, RG, C in rounds 2, 3 and 4

OFfensive players just have “play better” getting way too much money

Sure, nostalgia is great. But Davis has to win and he has not been doing that in spectacular fashion.

He deserves the praise when things go well and criticism when they don’t

Seven or eight years of this is deserving of criticism.

This isn’t your kid’s Little League team where you just cheer them on because they are kids.

These people make a nice tidy sum to compete and win. And this team has done that in years!

How much cash does Al have? It depends. How much does decrepit, crusty old ass go for on 73rd Ave these days?

  • Pretty Rick

I wonder who Al will overspend for this year. Always kinda interesting though. The only player I would really make a run for is Karlos Dansby whom I was hoping we wouldve snatched up in the 2nd rnd back in ’04′. Who did we take in the 2nd rnd that year anyway? Was it Jake Grove?

I don’t get this theory that it is an uncapped year so who cares what you pay these guys.

Good organizations made sound moves, no matter what the circumstances. If you get extra money, you don’t throw out the window, you do something wise with it.

They want to bring Routt back fine, but why overpay him? The guy is making as much money as Darrelle Revis made this year!!!

    SNB,
No they haven’t won. These seven years have been bad, Worse than expansion Bucs bad. But the NFL is ultra competitive and cutthroat. And it’s cyclical. The Raiders will be back, and soon. IMO.
The Green Bay Packers won the first two SB’s and then basically sucked for 25 years, until White and Favre in the early nineties. It wasn’t that long ago Mel Kiper was chastising the Colts on draft day. You’re the Colts that’s why you’re always drafting first or second. Today, after Manning that sounds absurd. But I bet a year or two after Manning retires the Colts go on another downturn with years of 4-12, and 6-10 records, until they rebuild. It’s just the nature of the beast.

    Vegas Raider,

This is not a “good” organization from the standpoint of decision making. So you have to look at the totality of these decisions.

Routt wasn’t worth a 7th round tender…but hey, by paying him all that money..it makes it less likely we spend $25 million for some 40x CB bust like Patrick Robinson…..good deal for me

Was Eugene worth a tender at all? No. Again, makes it less likely we draft another safety. Of course, the Huff contract makes me nervous.

The only reason I care about salaries is because they eat up the salary cap and the ability to get good players….but in this year…with a bunch of 1 year tenders…I won’t get worked up about salary.

Now, is Fargas and Warren still on the roster?

  • JB

Al’s not spending his own money. He’s spending his investor’s money. And, they have absolutely no say so over what, how much and how he does it. His AD Football Inc. contract is gold and AD knows it. His investors went into their investing in the Raider organization with their eyes open knowing AD had that contract. If they didn’t, well that’s on them for being dumbschits. It would however be interesting to know what AD’s net worth really is.

I guess you can look at it through different eyes. Would we prefer to have an owner too cheap to pay for good talent or an owner who possibly overspends. I’ll take the latter especially because it’s not my money he’s blowing. If he can get good talent in here albeit overpaid for their real worth, so be it. The bottom line and important consideration is that we win, not what it cost the Raider investors.

    Buckeyeraider,

If comparing this mess to other messes on other franchises gets you through…then that’s great.

All I am saying, is that Davis is making bad, bad, bad decisions. And those decisions deserve to be discussed and dissected.

Its important to get out of this mess. Is the team making the right decisions to get better? Getting Hue Jackson is a start. Will Davis bolster the D-Line? Will he draft a football player and not a physical specimen to be molded? Will there be an open QB competition?

Those issues are all fair game to discuss and critique.

  • http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/antisocial-personality-disorder/DS00829 KoolKell

No, he’s not making payments on a new Stadium. But he’s playing in a Stadium that makes no money.

  • http://blstb.msn.com/i/55/90A2853B6CFBCC2AFC987BB18B832.jpg vegas raider

    SnB,

All that is nice, but what if he still drafts another DB? Than what does that make it say about the Routt tender?

I don’t understand why Al is so worried about guys like Eugene and Brown leaving and slapping tenders on them. These guys have agents, all you have to do is tell them to give you an opportunity to counter any other offers out there in FA. Why pay Eugene and Brown 1.75 a piece when in reality you can probably get both those guys for 1.75?

Al Davis would be my wet dream if he sat next to me at the Poker table.

  • Nnamdi21

    Dansby? No way…

The fact Morrison’s a third behind Brown’s 2nd means bye bye Morrison.

Sign Fred Robbins (DT, been starting for NYG, connection w/ Coach Wauffle).

Sign Chad Clifton (T) and Casey Wiegman (C), players with zone-blocking scheme experience, thus alleviating the NEED to go OL w/ the 1st pick. Other quality ZBS OL that should be available this year: G/C Jason Spitz, T Levi Jones, T Tyson Clabo (connection w/ Coach Cable), G Ben Hamilton, G Chester Pitts, T Mark Tauscher, and C Casey Rabach.

    Draft Rolando McClain!

Also, if there’s no salary cap, shouldn’t there also be no salary cap hits? (read: cut JaLardass!)

True, but Davis doesn’t pay coaches, doesn’t pay a GM, or assistant GM, or their staff, my guess is that scouting dept is not among the highest paid, and Davis has owned this team for 35 years or so. So he’s made that back several times over. The TV money is still very lucrative too.

I don’t know the financials…don’t much care…I just want to see this doggone team make a sane decision and start winning some freakn games.

Al Davis stands to benefit the most with a 2011 blackout.

The owners get the TV money, whether one game is played or not. Being that Al is not making much money, or losing money according to some, he has the greatest benefit of any owner in the league with a blackout.

There’s a lot of assumptions here about his ownership, I think.

He never owned more than what 35% of the team until recently, when the McGahs finally gave out. His control lock has always been that Manager of the General Partner Agreement. Not that he owned the Raiders lock, stock and barrel.

Letting Morrison go would be plain stupid. I can see some team being smart enough to sign him then move him back to OLB (where he belonged the whole time) & he goes on to become one of the best OLBs in the NFL. Wasnt it Art Shell & Rob Ryan’s idea to move him to MLB & get rid of Danny Clark? They’re no longer here & all you have to do is move him back outside, then get a true MLB (Dansby or Draft), its not that hard. I hope they dont think Ricky Brown is the answer. Is Sam Williams gona get a 1st & 3rd rnd tender?

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

If Davis drafts a CB at #8, well, then the team will continue to lose because the run defense is AWFUL.

Sure, you would like the Davis to maximize the return on player salaries. Like spending $20M for 9 catches or $2.5M for 1 game. But hey, with Davis you are not going to get top tier management. You know this.

So you just hope that he can make enough decent decisions so that we have a chance to compete. This year, salary cap is no issue. Spend away…as long as he saves enough money to bring in a couple of players (draft or free agency) that can help the team
