How much cash does Al have?

Conventional wisdom over the past few years is that the Raiders are hurting financially.

They added new investors a couple of years back. They’re playing before crowds in the 30,000-range. Forbes magazine ranked Oakland 32nd in 2009 in terms of franchise value.

But as free agency opens at 9 p.m. tonight on the West Coast, never underestimate Davis’ ability to strike for a player he really wants.

The Raiders spend little on P.R., support staff and look to cut corners in every way possible except the acquisition of talent.

Here’s just some of the money the Raiders are scheduled to pay out this year:

– More than $16 million in bonuses and salary to Nnamdi Asomugha. (His salary is only $775,000).

– $12.38 million to Richard Seymour as the exclusive franchise player.

– $9.45 million to JaMarcus Russell.

– $5.75 million to safety Michael Huff.

– $4.5 million to defensive tackle Tommy Kelly.

– $3.268 million to first- and third round tender corner Stanford Routt.

– $2.6 million to cornerback Chris Johnson.

– $2.6 million to wide receiver Javon Walker (guaranteed _ they pay it even if they cut him).

– $2.6 million to Shane Lechler and $2 million to Sebastian Janikowski

– $2.5 million to defensive end Greg Ellis.

– Just under $7 million to second-round tender free agents Bruce Gradkowski, Thomas Howard, Jon Condo and Hiram Eugene.

– A little over $2.5 million to Kirk Morrison if he doesn’t come back with an offer sheet.

That’s nearly $60 million spent on 16 players on what will eventually be a 53-man roster, and doesn’t even include bonus payments which aren’t available to the likes of Darren McFadden and Robert Gallery. McFadden’s salary is $470,000 and Gallery’s $1.6 million. Nor does it include what it will take to pay the No. 8 overall pick in the NFL draft.

ESPN is reporting the possible demise of Justin Fargas and Gerard Warren because of upcoming bonus payments, although don’t rule out the possibility of one or both remaining with the team, either signing after being cut or adjusting their scheduled bonuses.

There is no salary cap, so Davis can spend as much as he wants, and at least Raiders fans won’t have to concern themselves with an owner saving up his cash for the lockout 2011 lockout.

The point is this _ if Davis is even thinking about inserting himself into the Julius Peppers sweepstakes, which begin in a few hours, or has his eyes on Karlos Dansby, let’s dispense with the stories about how the Raiders don’t have enough cash on hands to compete with the higher revenue teams.

    Nnamdi21,

Those “corporate shills” could teach Davis a lesson about getting help and using that help to leverage the best decision.

Some of the decisions and strategies over the last 8 years have been horrendous.

I hope they get better. They need a QB competition and they need to bring in another QB to compete….they need a DT in THE WORST WAY…..and may need an MLB if Morrison is going to be let go and remember, we could do worse than him. Defensive scheme has to get less predictable…and the running game needs to be the focus.

And no 40x warriors at the top of the draft

If Davis drafts a CB at #8, well, then the team will continue to lose because the run defense is AWFUL.

    ============================

All indications so far is keeping Routt is a mistake.

Makes me sad to say that because we used to chat frequently, but his play has done NOTHING to justify that kind of tender.

Still, not blue chip CBs in the draft and it IS a “vertical passing League now with 12 teams throwing for over 4 thousand yards last year.” per NFL network.

I’d be scared if we were still in the same safety-less boat we were in since the untimely demise of Stacy Toran, but right now we’re stocked at safety thank gawd.

Of course, soon as I say that he’ll take Mays with the 8th overall….

The Raider ALL-STAR team. Imagine the possibilities.

    Peppers
    Dansby
resign warren for less $ and let him backup Kelly.

Got Peppers and Seymore who can rotate with eachother at end and tackle. Shaunassey/Ellis rotate in on other side. Howard/Dansby/Scott – assume Morrison gone but backs up all positions.

You know the secondary. Maybe add another CB in later round – such as W Thurmond.

    Mawae
Thomas Jones – can teach our other backs how to play the position and he still has plenty in the tank IMO.
    Use #8 on a tackle.
Use 2nd or 3rd on another tackle or guard who can play multiple spots along the oline.

Insert your option with the rest of the picks or FA prospects.

Interested to hear your thoughts… NOT the ones that say not possible b/c I realize that, but on the eve of a interesting FA period… Lets have some fun.

Troy Smith not to high on the Ravens radar I see.

I would think someone would bite on that 5th round tender, but than I wouldn’t be suprised if nobody did.

If someone really wanted him, they could have just taken him in the draft in the 5th in the first place. Can’t imagine his value has gone up after riding pine for 3 years, when he came into the league fresh off a Heisman trophy campaign.

21, the Redskins do break the bank, you’re dead right about that., & they have nothing to show for it either which has been our problem as well. I just hope Al doesnt make another DeAngelo Hall type deal b4 taking care of Seymour’s contract. Hell, maybe we should sign Brittany Grinner from the Baylor’s basketball team. He,,I mean SHE,,hits harder than Hiram Eugene.

An NFL football franchise is not “corporate” in the traditional sense. They all reflect the will of their owners. Only difference is some owners are more hands on and some delegate to a GM.

These teams don’t employ 50K people.

Offense needs to score Touchdowns for our coverage pass rush D to succeed.

I agree, some bad misteps, but Lance had to do with some of those as you’ll recall.

Run game was the focus until we had to play hodge podge with an injured and under performing O line and had zero QB Wr chemistry.

Fix the O line. Fix the Raiders.

How about trading our first (#8) and next year’s second to Detroit for the #2 pick assuming the Rams take Bradford. We then could take Suh as our DT. Either pickup a FA MLB or draft Spikes and still have some later picks for another DE. Those moves along with geting an OT, OG & C leave but one questionable area – QB. If AD is adamant about hanging on to JaBustus then trade for McNabb. He’ll be good for 2-3 years and cound mentor JR. Maybe by 2013 JR might be able to learn the playbook and complete passes consistently.

Stanford Routt was our biggest liability on 3rd down defense.

Did you guys know we were 11th in the league in sacks, and 1ST in sacks as a percentages of pass attempts?

Improve Routt, either by him improving or replacing him, and it gets our D off the field at least one extra time a game.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

    JB,

Because we can draft Dan Williams and let him clog the middle and keep our 2nd round pick.

Suh is fine, but I think Williams actually fits our needs better than Suh

  • Midwest Fan

I guess I would add Troy Smith to my list above. If anyone knows what he’s worth would be Hugh. He’d even have some value at the wildcat spot. I know your gonna say we already have former QB’s on the team who could do it but I rather they work on their current positions and don’t take reps from them to play in that package.

  • http://blstb.msn.com/i/55/90A2853B6CFBCC2AFC987BB18B832.jpg vegas raider

    JB,

I think it will take more than a 2nd next year, especially with the pending lockout, to get to #2.

If we toss in one of our 3rd’s this year, it might get it done.

And I would be fully on board with it.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

    Norco,

When I hear the word “corporate”…I think it means a faceless organization with no individual accountability. Dan Snyder is very accountable for that franchise….If not for Davis’ spectacular blunders..Snyder would be front and center.

Routt claims to hate the Nickle and prefers playing out side with the sideline as a friend but sucked when he had his chance when Nnamdi was injured.

Routt has sucked so far as a raider period.

Routt, IMO, still hasn’t learned to trust his natural skills and physical talents.

You watch him sometimes, and he will have great coverage, and than for no reason will just grab the guy 15 yards down the field. And the guy must know that the refs are watching him, he gets flagged all the time.

    Vegas

I doubt that CNNSI is accurate, they have bulaga going high, Dez falling under 20 and Mcclain falling from the top 10, I do think Bruce Campbell might be drafted by AL which would be a huge mistake but the rest of the mock is whack, I dont think Rams would take Bradford like dumb Adam Scheffter said, Suh will be the pick, Bradford haven’t even thrown a ball yet. I hope we take Okung, William or Dez at 8.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

    Vegas,

Routt is ok as a Nickel corner and can fill in outside. He’ll be serviceable. Its an uncapped year..no big deal…plus the money saved from cutting Warren and Fargas far exceeds Routt’s salary…and they still might cut Kelly and restructure Huff.

Plenty of money when it comes to players

    Raider4eve,

Sure it is not 100%, but they were pretty good last year, and typically are just as accurate as anybody else out there.

And I certainly believe the Rams will take Bradford. No doubt about it. I was suprised at Bualaga at #6 as well though.

If Moss can fall to #21, who was way better than Dez in college, Bryant could fall just as far.

  • The Big Banana

I agree. I’d like to see Mawae signed too. Even at his ripe old age.
