Will the Bears live happily ever after?

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, March 5th, 2010 at 2:32 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Go ahead and concede the NFC North to the Chicago Bears if you wish.

Getting Julius Peppers and Chester Taylor on the first day of free agency is a nice haul. (They’ve also agreed to terms with tight end Brandon Manumaleuna).

What does this have to do with the Raiders?

Nothing, really, except it’s a bigger version of what Oakland did in 2005, when it spent big to sign defensive end Derrick Burgess and running back Lamont Jordan.

Burgess was nowhere near Peppers’ pedigree, although the Bears would probably be happy with the 16 sacks the defensive end put up in Oakland his first year.

And Taylor is a more proven back than Jordan, considerably older at 30 but having split time with Adrian Peterson for less wear and tear in recent years.

His first year in Oakland, Jordan rushed for 1,025 yards and nine touchdowns and caught 70 passes for 563 yards and two more scores in 14 games before missing the last two games with a knee injury.

Again, Chicago could live with that kind of production from Taylor.

What did Burgess and Jordan bring the Raiders in 2005? They went from 5-11 to 4-12.

The thing about free agency is this _ if you haven’t built a solid foundation, get good quarterback play and have strong systems of football, a flashy pass rusher and a 1,000-yard runner won’t do a lot to change things.

The Bears’ season will be all about what Mike Martz can do with quarterback Jay Cutler.

Jumping to more free agent conclusions:

– Figured the Raiders were probably safe in giving Bruce Gradkowski a second-round tender. Gradkowski was dumped by both St. Louis and Cleveland before ended up in Oakland _ three of the worst teams over the past few years in the NFL (what, the Lions weren’t interested?).

Now I’m not sure sure.

If A.J. Feeley can get a two-year, $6 million contract from St. Louis, then who’s to say Gradkowski can’t come back with an offer sheet?

Then do the Raiders match it or take the pick?

– Are the Raiders a silent bidder for the services of Anquan Boldin by trade?

Doubtful. He’ll want a new contract with huge money, and he’s a run-after-catch receiver and not the downfield type preferred by you-know-who.

I’d like to see the Raiders go after a veteran like Derrick Mason or Chris Chambers, but suspect they’re expecting a full season out of Chaz Schilens, another step up the ladder from Louis Murphy and dramatic improvement from Darrius Heyward-Bey instead.

– There’s something to be said for JaMarcus Russell’s quiet offseason (especially if he’s been getting in shape) other than a couple of jewelry-laden courtside appearances. Just ask Ben Roethlisberger.

– Grady Jackson’s available again, but he’s 37 and just got cut by the Detroit Lions. In Jackson’s favor is the Raiders line coach, Mike Waufle, was the line coach for Jackson’s last two years as a Raiders in 2000 and 2001.

– Remember thinking when Gibril Wilson got big money from the Miami Dolphins that someone hadn’t watched the film too closely. After pocketing $24 million in bonus money from the Raiders and Dolphins, he’s free to find another victim.

In the interest of disclosure, I thought Wilson was a good acquisition when the Raiders signed him as an unrestricted free agency.

Another reason why I tend to be skeptical when it comes to signing free agents.

The bottom line?

For all the talk about budgets and business, teams tend to keep players they want to keep, and free agents are on the market for a reason.

Damn. Watching the Bear’s press conference. Peppers is smiling ear to ear. Must be nice.

LOL. I hear you Steve. I don’t know what to make of all his “inside info” stuff. Like I said the guy is a True Believer, and a real fan. He seems to get piled on a lot in here.. sometimes unfairly, sometimes brings it on himself. Don’t want to pick sides. Just wanted to throw my two cents in on the topic. As I said earlier I’ve enjoyed what you’ve brought to the table so far.

    Michael Huff – $5.75M
    Tommy Kelly – $4.5M
    Justin Fargas – $2.5M
    Cooper Carlisle – $2.5M
    Gerard Warren – Big bonus

    Cut or restructure.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

Ooops…keep Michael Huff. I dont want Davis to have ANY more reasons to draft Taylor Mays.

so Huff has to stay! Plays the same role as signing Routt to that absurd tender.

Perhaps they will give Mario a big contract too. That way we won’t get Bruce Campbell.

  • Senior Beeecham

You’re right, Alford. Hitler’s brand of humor always goes over better when he’s not announced on the main bill.

In the world of comedy, it’s generally better to unexpectedly spring a racist wackjob on a unsuspecting crowd.

But here’s Dogg blatantly promoting Krappy’s appearance to the whole internet. All that’s only going to lead to:

Half the blog showing up to giggle at the old geezer around while he tries to break dance in a pair of dirty diapers

    AND / OR

Poor old Krappy breaking a hip in the mosh pit and being in traction for 6 months, unable to complete construction on the Swiss Chalet

  • buckeyeraider

    Rick,
I agree with ya. When Dakota was joking earlier about a supposed Boldin trade. I said I kinda like our young WR corps. Murphy, I think could explode on the scene this year. I like that guy. Has a certain swagger for such a young player. DHB, I’m really pulling for. The way those classless jerks from BSPN clowned on him @ last years draft was a disgrace. He worries me with the way he double clutches even the few catches he made last year. Eleven? Seems to catch everything with his body. But he is supposed to be a great kid with a work ethic, so hopefully he really surprises this year.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

The way ESPN treated DHB was disrespectful, and totally unprofessional.

That being said, DHB is being paid a lot of money. His performance in 2009 was totally unacceptable!

  • RaiderDebo

Damn, Donks signed Justin Bannan. I’ve always kind of liked him. Baltimore players always do well elsewhere.

  • RaiderDebo

Now we’ve re-signed Barnes. Guess he’s gonna challenge for a tackle spot, huh?

  • ottocrat

Raiders re-sign OT Khalif Barnes to one-year deal, a league source just told me. Their first deal of free agency….Why?

  • Pretty Rick

Apparently Ben Roethlisberger’s performance in Georgia was unacceptable. These dudes either better settle down with a wife, or go load up on a stack of porno dvds & just stay home and handle it (no pun intended) themselves. I rather stay in the crib & knock one out myself than to have some skeezer accusing me of rape, one of the worst things a man to have associated with his name.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

Khalif Barnes? Again, fine with me. If it keeps us from drafting Bruce Campbell.

I hope that Warren gets cut and no other DT moves are made until the draft.

Al, keep doing what you are doing. The root cause of this awful defense is the NT position. Lets fix that and bring in a MLB free agent like Antonio Pierce…just need someone at the MLB that knows how to play the position.

Dan Williams #8…..I know I am setting myself up for disappointment as Taylor Mays or Bruce Campbell will be the pick.

  • SD_Raider_619

Look, at least the Raiders aren’t reaching and overpaying for some free agent scrub.

Guess there wasn’t much of a market for Khalif Barnes’ services. Hope he stays healthy this year.

  • SD_Raider_619

Its an uncapped year remember people!!!! So if mr Senile a$$ wants a ring, his a$$ better spend the money or maybe he is broke.

  • buckeyeraider

    SnB,
I don’t know if they need to cut Warren. If he would agree to a paycut/restructure, I think he would be a very valuable backup/rotation player. At times, he still flashes as to why he was the #3 overall pick in the draft. He is quick off the line, and as Jerry said..sometimes appears unblockable. Just replace him in the starting lineup with a younger, beefier, more stout against the run DT on early downs.
If he refuses to restructure, and they can find a suitable replacement.. then maybe they can cut him.

  • Pretty Rick

Resigning Barnes is actually a smart move because we’ll still need O-lineman depth. I’d rather keep Barnes than Green anyway. Henderson’s our LT & I dont see us using the 8th pick on a RT when we can grab one in the 3rd rnd & there’ll be plenty to choose from. So we’ll use the 8th pick on a playmaker wether it be McClain or a DT. Brandon Spikes might actually slide to us in the 3rd rnd. wouldnt be mad at that.

  • SD_Raider_619

we could of resign barnes next week, no one would pick him up. AD get to work and sign Pierce or if you are rolling in money bring in kapman or dansby

Big Ben is Swiss, my wife knows that much. ;-)

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

    Buckeyeraider,

Warren is only valuable as a backup at a much reduced price tag.

I would like to see Dan Williams..the best NT prospect (read not 3-tech) taken at #8.

Warren could backup. He might be good for a couple of plays here and there.

His salary needs to reflect that

  • Senior Beeecham

Your wife also knows she’ll never see her chalet completed, we all know that much.

  • Pretty Rick

Im still hoping we keep Morrison but move him back outside where he should be then get a true MLB. Not Pierce,,his injury issues would hurt us. Unless we’re able to snag Dansby, although Miami seems to have him in the bag,, Im on the McClain train.

  • buckeyeraider

khalif Barnes was a second round pick of the Jax Jags. His career was actually off to a very solid start there. Then he got in some off the field trouble, DUI.. called Jacksonville Florida a racist town and compared the police dept. with the KKK. A change of scenery was probably in his best interest. I really thought he would flourish in Oakland, Cali. Then the preseason injury bug bit. Never had a chance.
The only play I can remember him even being in a game was the fiaco vs. the Jets. Calvin Pace just bull rushed him, knocked him on his Azz, and stripped JR of the ball. At least Barnes was man enough to step up and say “My Bad.”
But SGT. Schultz Deirdorf immediately starts lambasting Jamarcus’ lack of pocket presence. Jeezuz H. Christ.. Dan Marino in his prime wouldn’t have gotten that pass off. Had about 1.5 seconds. Just fed into some of the negative misconceptions about Jamarcus Russell.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

This year’s offseason is about future years as it is this year.

Davis should be cleaning house with all the big bloated contracts that are on this roster.

    Tommy Kelly
    Gerard Warren
    JaDavis Russell
    Darren McFadden
    Darius Heyward-Bey
    Michael Huff

I am hitting the reset button. Screw it. Those guys are NOT performing to their contracts. I would restructure or cut all those guys above.

There are players on the roster that can perform at the levels above.

Although, Huff is better, just not $6M good

The offer was for YOU to broach a topic..so hey..no problem.
Al…:) let’s discuss Al for starters, peanut.
I think it’s scandalous on what Al did to the fans both when he came back to Alameda, on the signing day, as well as everything he did in 2002, both during Super bowl week, and following it.
How do you view all of what happened?
Oh..then we can discuss how Al drove off John Madden, and how their final year together went, including how the players felt about it.
Oh..and what the hell..Al and the brigade of head coaches.
What do you feel about all of Al’s butting in, what he’s done during practices, the over ruling calls he’s made to the different coaches?
We’ll just start with that, peanut.

here it is again, so my little poodle doesn’t hurt his paws with all of his frantic reposting and cut and pasting -
Wow, little Poodle, I’m impressed! You actually copped to failing to bring up any sort of topic in 3 attempts!
That shows growth, little dude, something that does score points in your attempts to become my full time minion apprentice!
First of all, just accept Al doesn’t consider the opinions of his fans in any of his business moves. So you’re wasting precious poodle energy getting worked up over him moving the team to whatever locale offers him the most attractive package. And he’ll stomp over anyone (except usually players) to get it.
You ever heard of Idi Amin? Dictatorship has its price and the fans pay to live in Al’s kingdom. Don’t spend your days getting worked up about his injustice, it’ll just turn you into a bigger, wackier basket case.
I’m not sure what you’re interested in learning about the coaching cavalcade that you should already know. No sane person could rationally explain how rapid turnover leads to team stability.
Personally, I was hoping the Kiffin experiment would work out, mainly because the possibility of Monte installing a modern defensive scheme and Kiffin’s keen eye for college talent.
Anyway, his meddling is mostly, if not all, to blame for the chaotic state of his team, its loss of financial value and league wide respect, not to mention his only way to buy free agents is by massive overspending.
Hope that helps and gives you something to think about. Maybe next time we can discuss your favorite Raider merchandise purchases through the ages!
