Fargas’ knees can’t hold up under bonus

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, March 6th, 2010 at 5:53 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The closest I came to the Raiders today was driving past the Napa Marriott early this morning en route to a 13-and-under doubleheader, with colleague Steve Corkran calling me at some point during the second game to tell me Justin Fargas was waived after failing his physical.

Given that the Raiders Web site has thanked Fargas’ for his contributions, it doesn’t look as if he’ll be back after he attends the Commitment to Excellence award dinner on March 13, an award he won along with Zach Miller.

No doubt the “Human Crash Test Dummy,” as Lane Kiffin called him, has absorbed an incredible amount of punishment over the years. However, what caused the most stress on his joints was the weight of a $1.7 million roster bonus that was due to be paid Monday if Fargas had remained on the roster.

Given Darren McFadden’s durability issues and their reluctance to put too much on the shoulders of Michael Bush, the Raiders are in the market for a running back, either through the draft or free agency.

The Raiders issued the following statement: “Justin Fargas was a beloved Raider who performed at a high level throughout his seven seasons with the team, and his contributions to the Silver and Black will always be remembered. We wish Justin all the best.”

Fargas’ agent, Steve Baker, said via e-mail that “Justin feels he’s healthy to play football.”

You said it a while back, pert near exact words, and no not looking for a “spat”. I am just intrigued by people with complete opposite opinions/thoughts as I have. I personally HATE Al Davis and everything he does but I have been a Raider fan all my life. To me Al Davis is an embarrasment to everything Raider and if he REALLY cared he would see he is now a detriment rather than a positive influence on this franchise. He may have done great things for this team in the past but now he has transformed himself and the Raiders into the punchline of the sports world.

  • buckeyeraider

Hey Raider Nation, What’s going on.
If these newest rumors are true, and JR could be in some sort of Rehab program, That might actually be a good thing, and explain a lot.
It might explain the crash and burn from the final six starts of ’08 where Russell actually looked like a promising young QB prospect to what we saw last year.
The guy suffered some losses/tragedy in his personal life. He’s young rich, and thousands of miles from his home. Maybe his drinking was getting out of control.
Brian was on here saying last year, that the word on the street was that Russell was partying hard. Brian would know a lot more about the word on the street in Oakland, than somebody like me sitting in southwest Ohio. It makes sense if you think about it.
If he realizes he has a problem, and is getting help, or being pushed into treatment by the org., then that could be a good thing.

Al just keeps butchering the first round.

That seems to be the biggest issue these days. If he can improve on that, I will take him any day of the week.

Wonderful Hayes..you’ve perfected the fine art of being a spineless lemming.

World needs followers…the mindless that follow blindly along. Do what they’re told. Act like they’re told to act. Never daring to demand better, or to feel they deserve better.

It’s all part of the no backbone look.

You’ll never be confused with anyone who’ll make a difference, or even try to make a difference..that’s a guarantee.

  • buckeyeraider

    Bob,
    You still around?

  • buckeyeraider

ESPN is reporting RB Thomas Jones is visiting KC. Not cool. Saw enough of that dude last year in those ugly azz NYJ throwback unies.

  • buckeyeraider

Fix the Run D Mr. Davis, Please!

  • buckeyeraider

At least we shouldn’t have to see anymore of those damn LT “I’m a little Tea Pot” TD celebrations. I’m not going to miss that guy.

  • 24

Buckeyeraider – Now that you said that…LT will probably end up as a Chief or Bronco.

  • buckeyeraider

LOL. I hope not 24. I don’t like the prospect of seeing Thomas Jones twice a year in division, either.
I guess I’d like to see LT’s pouting, crybaby butt ride off into the sunset in someplace like Philly, anywhere far, far away from the AFC West.

  • buckeyeraider

Wouldn’t surprise me to see Fargas pull a Marcus Allen, and sign within the division. His first game as a Charger, the Crash Test Dummie runs over, through and around Howard and Morrison, and the rest of the sieve like run D for about 150 yds and a TD.

  • HayesDaze37

Ahh, RickyLake — Go chase that tail somewhere else. Your lack of football talk — and creativity — makes you too boring to even deal with. Get somebody else to feed your pathological need for attention — there are a number of guys in here who need it as bad as you do.

Ron — “Pert near” what I said doesn’t mean exact. I will NEVER say I want to lose, or accept losing as a good thing. Losing is terrible.

I do, however, accept Al Davis for what he is — good and bad. And, since it’s his money (and not a democracy), I say more power to him. Good on ya for staying with the team, even if you don’t like Al. But, just as you don’t understand how I can support Al as loyally as I do, I wonder how you can hate the guy. To each his own.

  • Seymour Bush

Wack-O’s here? Oh good. I just took a dump and I need to wipe my ass. Bring your face over here again wack-job.

  • jhill

So Kahlif Barnes is back for another shot at LT?

Or is he cool with starting at RT and already working on the footwork to play the position?

  • jhill

    What happened with Antonio Bryant?

You mean he wasn’t cool with being a #4 WR?

  • http://blstb.msn.com/i/55/90A2853B6CFBCC2AFC987BB18B832.jpg vegas raider

Khalif Barnes might not make the final roster if he gets hurt in camp again this year.

  • RaiderRon

Antonio Bryant a #4 in Oakland?? LMFAO! Classic

  • jhill

So with Routt starting at corner next year, we won’t go CB at 8

Ricky Brown, Howard, and Scott are our LBs, so cross LB off the list.

Khalif Barnes was just given another shot at the title so OT is out.

Bush and DMAC = no RB

    Grads = no QB

Huff, Branch, and Mitchell = no S

Warren is still on the team, so I dunno about a DT yet.

    Hmmmmm ……….

  • jhill

I’m really interested to know who you think Tom Davis would bench to play Bryant?

    Chaz?

    DHB?

    Murphy?

  • jhill

If he gets hurt in camp again?

I think you could say that about a few people on the roster.

But let’s say he’s healthy, what are Cable’s intentions for him?

  • RaiderRon

Take your pick. Antonio Bryant is twice as good as ANY of those guys. If you think Antonio Bryant would come here and NOT be the number 1 then you are more ignorant than even I thought.

    Your LB take is laughable.
Your RB take is just flat stupid. Bush+DMC= one of the worst RB duos in NFL. RB is a MAJOR need.

  • buckeyeraider

    JHill,
I wouldn’t read too much into it. I don’t think it precludes them from going OT at eight, if that’s what you’re worried about. I said last night, I think he could be there for camp competition and depth. I don’t see him unseating Mario at LT. Maybe replacing Green at Rt, if he agreed to the switch.
I know his play on the field slipped in his last season in Jax, to go along with his off field problem. However, prior to that, I believe the guy was supposed to be a solid starter in the league.

  • 24

We can only hope Hue Jackson can get DHB to become successful.

  • 24

RaiderRon – JHill is being sarcastic. He’s referring to things in the eyes of Al Davis.

  • 24

The NFL Draft is only on ESPN and NFL Network right?

  • jhill

    Ronda,

As usual, you are losing sight of the obvious.

So your take is Cable and Al have given up on Chaz and DHB, and they don’t like Murphy? THAT is what is hilarious!

Give us your take on who the starting LBs will be? Tell us how you interpret the 2nd rd tenders given to Brown and Howard, lol?

Bush and DMAC may be what you say, lol, but, uhhhh, they are going to both be featured my Tom Davis. Tell me they are not.

You have about as much of a grip on this team as I thought you did if you are going to tell me THEY have RB as a need.

    Fargas will visit the Chiefs

Posted by Mike Florio on March 7, 2010 7:17 PM ET
Running back Justin Fargas, who was cut by the Raiders for supposedly failing a physical but who claims he didn’t, could be getting a chance to take another physical soon.

David White of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that Fargas will be visiting the Chiefs.

“I was told by [Raiders coach Tom Cable] that they were moving in a different direction,” Fargas told White. “They said it was strictly about money. . . . I know some things were put out there, I guess they said I didn’t ass [unfortunate typo not narrowly averted] a physical. I’m a little disappointed by the way it happened but I understand it’s a business.”

He told White that he won’t be retiring, and while he says he won’t return to the Raiders his agent has been in touch with the 49ers.

And if Fargas is willing to move north, his former college coach could be interested, too.

As to the notion that it was “strictly about money,” Fargas was due to earn a base salary of only $755,000 in 2010. But he also was owed a roster bonus of $1.7 million.

Per NFLPA records, Fargas was under contract with the Raiders through 2014, with a base salary maxing out at $1.775 million in the final year.

  • buckeyeraider

    JHill,
What do you make of Vegas’ claim that the “Lethargy” Clinic JR might be attending in AZ is some sort of Rehab facility? Might that explain the dramatic dropoff in Russell’s play from the end of ’08 till last years crash and burn? There were rumors that the guy was partying pretty hard. Sleeping in, being late to meetings. Kinda makes sense IMO. What do you think?

  • jhill

    Buckeye,

Tom Cable likes Khalif Barnes, for whatever reason. He is going to get the same chance to fall on his face that Kwame Harris did, lol.

Now let’s keep it real here. Mario Henderson should not be handed the starting LT spot the same way Russell shouldn’t be handed the QB spot. Mario said he was basically told the job was his last year regardless. You would think/hope that he has to earn the job. HE may end up being the RT.

  • 24

Of course the release of Fargas was about money…they gave Fargas’ money to guys like Stanford Routt and Ricky Brown.

  • jhill

Wouldn’t surprise me one bit to find out that guy is/was in Rehab.

  • RaiderRon

WR- IF they signed Antonio Bryant that would be a sure sign they werent exactly enamored with the current group. Yes or NO????

LB- If Morrison is still around hes the MLB. Period. Ricky Brown is a fringe NFL player. If he was cut by this “team” he would be bagging groceries at the local Cash and Carry.

RB- Yeah, cuz they have shown they are REALLY into featuring Bush and DMC the last 2 years. Not to mention how productive they both have proven to be. The number 1 RB in 2010 is not on the roster at this moment.

  • 24

I think the Raiders had to let go of Fargas in order to keep themselves from putting him in because they just couldn’t help themselves. Now they can’t be tempted any longer.

  • http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/antisocial-personality-disorder/DS00829 KoolKell

    Exactly 24

I’m glad he’s been taken away from Cable. Maybe Hue Jacksons input.

  • 24

    http://www.themeadows.org/about.html

This could be where Jamarcus Russell is right now.

  • DKnight007

Wow…sounds like Al Davis and his cronies (Herrera and Cable) have ended up treating a hard worker and locker room leader in Fargas like CRAP!

Hmm…treat a good guy like Fargas like crap….but continue to give a lazy ass guy like Juggs Russell the money he is making?

Oy vey….more weird bizarre stupid moves to come….wait until draft day! LOL

  • 24

KoolKell – If Hue Jackson is the reason Fargas is gone and thats the likely case, then its a good sign that he recognizes some of the other offensive issues this team has had. He recognizes that Fargas shouldn’t be a feature back and the Bush should at least be in competition to be the feature back as its very possible the Raiders could find another starter in free agency or the draft.

  • 24

DKnight007 – Al Davis doesn’t seem to care much about treating people nicely. He let Willie Brown walk out of the Raiders HQ without giving him a proper exit. Brown had to tell the reporters that he retired.

  • buckeyeraider

    JHill,
I’m all for camp competition. I don’t want any body handed anything. A player fighting for his job is a motivated football player. I’ve been as big a JR supporter as there is on this blog.(This side of Priest).I’ve probably strayed into hyperbole. I compared his raw physical skills to a young John Elway, and his cooler-than-the-other- side-of-the pillow” demeanor to Kenny Stabler. LOL.
However, when somebody on here advocated cutting/not resigning Grads, I said no way. That would demoralize the team, it’s remaining fan base, and send the wrong message to Jamarcus as well.
I called for resigning Grads, and having a fair and open competition. Make him earn it. That goes for the QB, all the way down the roster.

  • 24

I would think Javon Walker would start under Hue Jackson’s watch because he needs a veteran that can learn the playbook and provide some stability immediately.

  • 24

Al Davis stuck by Justin Fargas way too long and Fargas pays Al Davis back by visiting with the Chiefs. The 1st sign of disrespect.

I can’t imagine that he is, right now, in any type of thinking of being a starter.

Mario is at LT, Barnes isn’t taking that for him. And he flopped at RT, so you can’t think that he is penciled in to start there either.

Depth, and of course if he knocks it out of the park in camp, COULD BE the RT.

  • jhill

    OK …

So you didn’t answer the question of if you thought Tom Davis was done with Chaz, Murphy, and DHB, lol. Did they sign Bryant? You mean he flew to Oakland, was told he’d be the #1 guy, and he told them I’ll get back to you? LMFAO!

IF Morrison is still around? Why would he still be around? You think he signs the one year tender?

And again, just looking for a simple yes or no. Will Bush and DMAC be the #1 and 2 guys next year?

Carr agrees to terms with 49ers

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 7, 2010 8:19 PM ET
Alex Smith has a new backup quarterback to worry about in San Francisco.

David Carr agreed to terms with the 49ers, according to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News. The deal was first mentioned by Carr’s former teammate Kevin Boss, who tweeted the news. (What is it about Carr-related tweets making news?)

Carr’s arrival doesn’t bode well for Shaun Hill, who lost his starting job to Smith during last season. Hill is due $1.5 million in 2010, and is hardly a lock to keep his roster spot.

The chance to get back on the field was paramount in Carr’s search. The 49ers are committed to Smith as a starter, but Carr knows better than anyone a number one overall pick at quarterback has to win eventually or lose his gig.

  • jhill

    Vegas,

One bad play does not equal a flop at the position, lol.

Why do you think he is not being considered as a starter?

He certainly was given the opportunity last year and was really Cable’s intention to have him play RT. Mario not impressive to say the least last year, and RT is clearly open.

And let’s not forget about Cable’s other boy Erik Pears, lol.

  • http://tada Florida Pete

I’m hoping Bush is the featured back…

I’m hoping Cable is over his hurt feelings and let’s him play…

And I’m hoping Bush comes in ready to play…

Fargas being gone just might be the inspiration he needs…

I think this is a contract year for Bush…

if he ever wants to see a big payday… he needs to really come and play…

  • http://www.raiderfans.net Richochet

How is it a sign of disrespect for Fargas to go try out with KC?
it’s a business…it’s not like Fargas turned down a great offer from the Raiders to seek out KC.
He was released two days before he was due 1.5 million.

You think he cares what team signs his check?

  • http://blstb.msn.com/i/55/90A2853B6CFBCC2AFC987BB18B832.jpg vegas raider

Did he start another game after the Jets game? Not that I remember, nor do I even really remember him on the field much after that.

He is going to have to have a good camp to make the roster, IMO, and a great camp to see the field week 1 (barring injuries of course)
