ESPN: Becht to pay a visit

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, March 8th, 2010 at 7:55 am in Oakland Raiders.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting free agent tight end Anthony Becht is visiting the Raiders today.

It’s the first reported visit since free agency began Friday.

Profootballtalk.com is reporting the visit will take place “this week.”

Tight end is one of the positions where the Raiders could stand pat. Starter Zach Miller has 166 receptions in three seasons, backup Tony Stewart is a core special teams player Brandon Myers, a sixth-round draft pick, showed promise.

Becht, 32, is 6-foot-6, 270 pounds and had 10 starts for the Arizona Cardinals last season. He has 185 receptions for 1,511 yards and 21 touchdowns in a career which began in 2000 with the Jets. He also played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2005 through 2007 and the St. Louis Rams in 2008. He is a former first-round draft pick, No. 27 overall and regarded as a good blocker.

Were Becht to sign, his likely competition would be Stewart, given Miller’s status as the starter and Myers’ promise as a rookie.

According to BuffaloBills.com, free agent offensive tackle Cornell Green is visiting the Bills today.

    Whos he?

    A friggin tight end?…wtf?

  3. Norco Bob Says:

Ok, poppin one, lets see what time it kicks in, alwats my favorite part of the day…here we go…my beautiful cell phone tells me its 7:58

  4. LA to TheBay Says:

    Why?

Why didn’t we here about Pashos or a guard or something?

Tight End? Is a spot we’re OK at, unless we’re looking to replace Stewart (unlikely).

    Sigh.

  5. Midwest Fan Says:

becht is a blocking TE, not much of a pass catcher. I’d say if he was signed, that would leave stewart without a spot

  6. LA to TheBay Says:

Probably just a camp body, but at least invite guys to camp that play positions of need.

  7. Midwest Fan Says:

I believe Pashos just signed, not sure where though, maybe washington?

  8. LA to TheBay Says:

“It’s the first reported visit since free agency began Friday.”

    What about Antonio Bryant, Jerry?

  9. Midwest Fan Says:

    Correction, he signed in CLE.

  10. jhill Says:

    RRS ….

Been doing a bit of digging on Barnes. He gave up 7.5 sacks his last year in Jacsonville. I think I recall at least 4 of those going to Mario Williams and Freeney.

  11. LA to TheBay Says:

    Midwest

    Browns.

  12. Midwest Fan Says:

Robbins going to STL, thought we may have had an “in” with him given we brought in Wauffle.

  13. Norco Bob Says:

Mawae and Williams,..then its the afc west title…word.

  14. LA to TheBay Says:

You think Cable rolls with Barnes, Gallery, Satelle, Walker/Morris/?, and newbie?

Cornell Green is on the market, correct?

Wouldn’t be surprised if our first two signings were for Barnes and Green.

Patchwork line remains generally the same, Al drafts Campbell, Best, McKnight, Jacoby and a couple pass rushers?

Or is this The Year? Where Cable gets some input, we draft 3 O Linemen, a DT, a MLB, FB, PR/KR and a SSLB?

  15. Dakota Says:

Fargas is gone? What will we do without his 1.7 TDs/year?

  16. Dakota Says:

    C. Green visiting the Bills.

    Talk about addition by subtraction!

  17. LA to TheBay Says:

Fargas is gone? What will we do without his 1.7 TDs/year?

    Still hard to believe.

If Marcus Allen was on this team (in his prime) Al would still start Fargas over him.

    Maybe this is The Year….

I predict an upsurge of fumbles…

  19. Norco Bob Says:

Sure alot of “people” baggin on Fargas,..the man was by far the hardest working dude, the dude that gave a damn the most,…was only player I can think of that wasnt there just for the paycheck,…and he gets shipped out along with a phony didnt pass a physical line,…(my sources tell me there wasnt even a physical)…you “people” better hope the old goat overpays to get LT here, because listen to me, and my pill hasnt kicked in yet,…heres the real truth,..both Bush, and DMAC, both suck…ok?…they both suck. Word.

  20. jhill Says:

I’m looking at who Barnes went up against his last year in Jacksonville and he blanked Freeny and Williams in their first 2 outings, and only gave up 1 sack to Harrison.

He’s already beat out Green based on that. I know Mario better bring the lunch pail next season. Especially if Okung or Davis fall to us too.

  21. Dakota Says:

    Sign a TE?

Maybe we should bring in another long-snapper, kicker and punter too?

    Really Al?

  22. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

    Hilarious:

“WIVB.com is also reporting that the Bills will meet with veteran Raiders tackle Cornell Green on Monday. Green, who will turn 34 this August, has spent much of the last three seasons as Oakland’s starting right tackle, logging 38 starts. The 6′6″, 315-pound Green is experienced, and would give the Bills a starting option on the right side, alleviating one of their biggest needs.”

That is what 49er fans thought of us signing K. Harris; hilarious.

  24. jhill Says:

    8. Oakland Raiders
    Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers
Raiders owner Al Davis loves big linemen and has a special place for East Coast guys. Anthony Davis impressed at the combine and needs a push to reach his full potential. Tom Cable is an offensive line coach by trade and can get the most out of this guy.

Kirwin thinks Davis falls to us … What are we going to do with Marion Henderson with Barnes and a rookie starting at OT?

  25. Dakota Says:

Reporter: Al, what type of players do you look for on day five of free agency?

    Al: Camp fodder.

  26. jhill Says:

I wonder if Rosenhaus is talking his client right out of Oakland?

  27. Dakota Says:

Fargas didn’t pass his physical? Was he seen by the same team docs that gave the green light to sign Ben Troupe, Javon Walker and to make Tommy Kelly the highest paid DT in the NFL on a knee that wasn’t 100%?

LMOA…did Fargas lose a leg or something?

  28. Dakota Says:

Once Fargas starts telling it like it is about the Raiders, I wonder what all the Al nut suckers will say? Most of the Al nut suckers were also Fargas butt lickers….should be interesting.

  29. jhill Says:

    LOL Dakota!

I can’t see that happening. Justin Fargas is in line to be the next Willie Brown once he retires. He’ll be coaching the RBs for the next 25 years.

  30. Norco Bob Says:

Dakota…camp fodder?,..thats what most other nfl teams would say about our entire roster. Hey now.

  31. RaiderRockstar Says:

I think we only need one new guy. And if Dez Bryant were to put on 10 lbs, I’d say we might actually be set already.

Broncos hosted Hadnot over weekend — 2:08 p.m.

The Denver Broncos had free-agent G Rex Hadnot (Cleveland Browns) in for a visit over the weekend, Scout.com has confirmed through a league source.

Denver has very little depth at either guard position, so their interest in Hadnot shouldn’t be surprising.

The veteran interior offensive lineman started 21 games for the Browns over the past two seasons.

Hadnot was originally selected in the sixth round of the 2004 NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins.

    – Adam Caplan

Al, this is a guy we need! Sign Rex!!!!!

  35. Dakota Says:

    Rex Hadnot

76 career starts 9.5 sacks allowed

Cooper Carlisle, in only three years in Oakland:

    47 starts, 10.5 sacks allowed

  36. jhill Says:

    LOL RRS …

Seriously though, Bryant is 6′5 295 and looked pretty damn good. Another 10 lbs, and how is he not at least Lamar Houston?

  37. RaiderRockstar Says:

Been doing a bit of digging on Barnes. He gave up 7.5 sacks his last year in Jacsonville.

    ***

you left out his 5 holding calls and 3 false starts, but I don’t care about his years in Jax anyways.

Here’s what I do know. He didn’t beat out Henderson or Green last year. They even tried him at guard and he flopped there too. Thats when Langston Walker got his chance to play guard. After Morris, Pears & Barnes choked…

I’m not a Barnes fan. Just like I’m not a Satele fan or Russell fan. These guys won’t have my vote until they produce on the football field wearing silver & black. PERIOD

what the Raiders should & will do often times never lines up.

  38. Dakota Says:

The negotiations between the Broncos and free agent G/C Rex Hadnot have reached an impasse, according to the Denver Post.
Hadnot visited Denver on Friday and it looked like he’d be a nice fit for the Broncos’ new power scheme. Hadnot likely wants to see if he can garner more interest/guaranteed money elsewhere. Mar. 8 – 8:59 am et

    TE?! Really?!

    Fire the Fat Monkey!!

  41. RaiderRockstar Says:

Jhill: I’ll give you this …

Desmond Bryant looked as good against the run as Gerard Warren and he’s 35 lbs lighter. Bryant (like Kelly, Warren, Seymour on occasion) is a UT.

I wish you would quit trying to make players into something that they are not. Barnes has never played RT well. Played LT average at best. Walker never played RG in his life and is a free agent. Bryant was an undrafted rookie that showed a little promise in a few games and now he’s gonna add weight and become our NT of the future? please man. PLEASE. you’re killin’ me with this stuff

  42. Raider O Says:

We tender Eugene, Routt, Morris, Brown, Then we bring a FA TE for a visit!!!!!?????

    Great Start!!

  43. RaiderRockstar Says:

    regarding Jerry Mac’s article:

    Becht? i’ll pass

maybe if we hadn’t drafted Brandon Myers last year.

“Cornell Green is visiting the Bills today.”

best news i’ve read all day !!!

  44. Raider O Says:

I like Dez Bryant as a backup pass rusher, and I also think he can play Base End. Not an asset against the run.

  45. Norco Bob Says:

Troy Smith pining away to be a Brown,..sheesh…some here are saddened about that I reckon,..not me.

  46. jhill Says:

I’ll take the average LT play of Barnes at LT over what we’ve been getting all day long.

Walker never played LG either, but looked pretty good doing it last year.

Scott never played DE or LB before, and so on.

  47. RaiderRockstar Says:

Raider O: you forgot Lawton & Barnes …

I’m glad Frye is back, but paying him over a million?

    yikes!

  48. Dakota Says:

Barnes is a failed LT. At LT he gives up sacks at a Kwame Harris pace. If he can play RT against the lesser pass rushers, then fine, go for it…but we better not count on that happening.

  49. Norco Bob Says:

I believe Big Ben is a serial rapist. Hey now. Not kidding by the way. Ted Bundy was also a supposed upstanding member of society too. Word.

  55. Raider O Says:

    Thx RR!

  56. LA to TheBay Says:

    Jhill has a point.

    Al loves tinkering with positions.

I’m of the mind we need a true NT, plays 50-66% of the snaps, eats up double teams and allows a true MLB to clean up.

But Al could certainly tell Bryant to put on 15 lbs. and come back and play out of position.

Al has made more outrageous changes.

Shoot, Trevor scott is a former TE.

WRs playing TE. DTs playing DE and vice versa. FSs playing CB. OT playing QB (JaMarcus).

  57. LA to TheBay Says:

Wrong. Did we play a 3-4 when 350 lb Sam Adams was our NT? Did we play a 3-4 when 375 lb Ted Washington was our NT? Did we play a 3-4 when 345 lb Grady Jackson was our NT.

Playing Warren and Kelly, two UT at DT is one of the main reasons we can’t stop the run…and throwing a 305 lb Bryant in at NT won’t do schyt.

  72. DMAC Says:

Just sign Jamal Williams, and find another MLB and the run D will be much improved.

Troy Smith wants to be a Brown
Posted by Michael David Smith on March 8, 2010 10:50 AM ET
The Cleveland Browns are considering a number of options at quarterback this off-season. Troy Smith hopes one of those options is him.

Smith, a restricted free agent who was tendered at the original round level by the Ravens, would love it if the Browns would sign him to an offer sheet or work out a trade with the Ravens that would put him in Cleveland.

“He would crawl from Baltimore right now to be able to play in Cleveland,” Smith’s agent Ralph Cindrich told the Canton Repository. “That’s clearly where his heart is.”

Smith was born in Cleveland and won the Heisman Trophy at Ohio State. Cindrich says Smith wants to go home, and that he thinks the Ravens and Browns might be discussing a deal.

“Cleveland has been on the up and up on this thing,” Cindrich said. “I did hear from a source there may have been discussions between the Ravens and Browns. . . . It would be the ideal situation to see if a trade could be worked out.”

  88. KoolKell Says:

Anthony Becht?????? can anyone figure that one out?

  89. DMAC Says:

    Becht in. Stewart out. Possibly.

  90. LA to TheBay Says:

“Wrong. Did we play a 3-4 when 350 lb Sam Adams was our NT? Did we play a 3-4 when 375 lb Ted Washington was our NT? Did we play a 3-4 when 345 lb Grady Jackson was our NT.”

And what has the philosophy been since?

Grady was a minute ago, Dakota. The M.O. lately has been pass-rushing DTs and what Jhill mentioned would make sense given that line of thinking.

Unless Al is ready to dump that philosophy, there’s going to be an undersized, more athletic guy at that spot.

  91. Norco Bob Says:

Tony Stewart must have an upcoming bonus. Word.

  92. RaiderRockstar Says:

Domata Peko is the Bengals NT. Tank Johnson is more of a UT. the Cowboys found that out too. Jay Ratliff is their NT.

the Bungles are trying hard to re-sign Tank anyways. I’ll pass unless Tommy Kelly & Gerard Warren both get axed

  93. RaiderMario420 Says:

MAYBE MILLER’S CONCUSSIONS WERE WORSE THAN WE THOUGHT

  94. Dakota Says:

Well LA to the bay, if that is true then we all might as well go home because we are wasting our time hoping for Al to do the right thing.

  95. RaiderRockstar Says:

Derek Anderson is the kind of strong armed QB Al Davis loves.

If the Browns trade for Troy Smith and DA is released, things might get interesting …

  96. The Big Banana Says:

I sure hope not RaiderMario. Man, talk about one of the few bright spots on this team.

  97. LA to TheBay Says:

“Signing Jamal Williams, Joey Porter, Rex Hadnot, and any blocking FB with a pulse could turn this team into a respectable 9-7….

oh wait, we still have Cable as HC and Russell/Garbage at QB.

    Never mind.”

You don’t think they could have been respectable with Garcia or Garbage starting from day 1?

    5-11 could have easily been…

6-10 if Russell didn’t come in for Frye in the 2nd half v. Baltimore.

7-9 if the offense put some points on the board in Cleveland.

8-8 if Garbage (AKA Gangstakowski)doesn’t go down in the Redskins game and the whole team quit on Russell (again)

9-7 if DHB didn’t have hands of stone in the KC game.

Obviously, not all of that is on Russell, but I feel this would have been a much different season had he not started.

I’ll give him the 1st KC game and the 2nd Denver game, cuz he did come through there, but think of all the garbage plays he made.

Bruce, behind the same (at times worse) O Line was able to do a whole lot more than Russell.

  98. RaiderRockstar Says:

LA to TheBay: look out buddy

You’re the most cynical of the cynics so I’m surprised you didn’t pack it in long ago.

  100. Dakota Says:

Is it too much to ask for:

    A. a head coach that has a clue,
    B. a run-blocking FB,
    C. a true NT,
    D. a RT that can pass block,
    E. a RG that can run block,
    F. a C that wouldn’t lose an arm wrestling match with Paris Hilton?

  101. LA to TheBay Says:

“LA to TheBay: look out buddy

as soon as Jhill reads those comments re: Russell you’re dead to him”

I’ll give him a tale from the dark side and we’ll be cool again.

His argument is that compared to Russell, Grad looks good, but compared to the rest of the league (or much of it), QB in general looks bad here.

    And he’s right.

But I still think Gradkowski was gutsy and I’m willing to give him a season.

We gave Russell two and look what happened.

If it has to be a comparison between the two, so be it. Any other QB on the roster has to be compared to the “Franchise QB” we aready have. And frankly, there is no comparison.

  102. RaiderRockstar Says:

LA to TheBay: if Al Davis wants to start 2 UT’s next to eachother on the DL we might as well keep “Money” Warren. He’s relatively cheap this year after cashing in last year.

I was hoping you guys wanted to become more of a physical (not finesse) football team.

Isn’t that why many of you are lobbying for upgrades at FB & MLB?

Either you’ve given up hope or you think a rookie MLB can be dominant behind lackluster UT’s. so which is it?

  103. LA to TheBay Says:

    Dakota.

You may get 4/6 of those.

  104. Silver-n-Smac Says:

    Just for the record:

All you morons that continually bagged on Justin Fargas and continually failed to see the value he brought to this team finally got what you wanted, ey?

But you’re just that – Morons.

I’m a Raider fan and I’ll root my ass off for D-Mac and Bush.

But let it be known the Raiders just lost one of their only players that I would legitimately call “Tough”.

And I could strongly argue that they lost their best running back.

  105. RaiderRockstar Says:

if you guys aren’t hoping for upgrades in the trenches then you’ve basically conceded that Al Davis will draft Mays, Haden or Campbell at #8 and we’re going 5-11 again next year

    +++++++++

I’ll be the judge of that…a 305 lb Bryant doesn’t equal “C”, Barnes does not equal “D”, Bush in the backfield with McFadden does not equal “B” and Paris Hilton owns Samson (yeah right) Satele.

  107. LA to TheBay Says:

“Either you’ve given up hope or you think a rookie MLB can be dominant behind lackluster UT’s. so which is it?”

Neither. I think that people get carried away with mock drafts and what the team needs.

    I’m on record for a NT/MLB as priority 1, O Line priority 2.

A lot to ask for a rook to play MLB.

I want to be more tough.

Of course, you have to look at who runs the team. Al has been trending toward pass-rushing DTs for years. Al has not invested in a solid MLB.

If Al decides to wake up, he will agree with me and many others in that those two spots need to be addressed.

If he doesn’t, look for Bruce Campbell and Joe McKnight with more of the same at LB/DT. Probably Ricky Brown and a rookie SSLB.

For the millionth time: both those kids have more talent than Fargas, but, neither of them has played like it thusfar.

And as for Fargas’ lack of touchdowns, go back and watch every game he played in and see how many actual scoring opportunities he had. You may be surprised that it’s not that many. I can remember countless times when he would do the grunt work to get us inside the 5 yard line, only to get pulled out for another back. And more often than not, that other back would end up not scoring either.

    I agree completely.

    I hope Al wakes up.

For some silly reason, I believe the change begun last year and will continue this offseason.

Al got his hard hitting safety and his Speedy, stretch the field WR. He already got his QB and RB “of the future.”

He knows the run D is awful. He traded for Seymour at the last second because he knew we were in trouble.

This year, he’ll want whoever we line under center to be protected and will hopefully fill the gaping hole in the middle of our D.

We already know Cable doesn’t want Morrison at MLB and we know Al isn’t afraid of losing Morrison (thus, the 3rd round tender).

ILB and NT will be a priority, IMO, and has been for years. So will O Line. Cable needs to redeem himself.

I agree. Usually it’s a bonehead move because of speed. Al wants to convert Trevor Scott to a pass rusher cause of speed. Al plays Kelly at DT because of his pass-rushing. Al converts WRs to TEs because of speed.

    Now?

None of them would start on ANY NFL TEAM.

    Not a single one.

  132. Dakota Says:

    Silver-n-Smac,

Fargas has been a nothing long before we ever drafted McFadden or Bush.

The fact of the matter is that Fargas got the vast majority of goal line attempts this past season…he didn’t produce. He has had 827 career attempts and hasn’t produced.

Behind the same line in half that many attempts over the past two seasons Michael Bush and McFadden have scored 11 TDs.

Fargas would have been a nice backup RB…Cable couldn’t accept that so now Fargas is gone. personally I didn’t want Fargas off the team, I wanted Cable gone and Fargas backing up Bush and McFadden. Al took the cheap way out and kept Cable on for another year because of the lockout, and so Fargas had to go…I am not happy about Fargas leaving, but it certainly will not hurt us.

  133. RaiderRockstar Says:

Seymour didn’t make us better vs. the run …

he’s a base end and i’m glad he’s starting there instead of Trevor Scott or Jay Richardson though.

    Seymour/Ellis/Shaughnessy/Richardson or Gunheim

    we’re good at DE imo.

Scott has been moved to WLB and Howard to SLB. Morrison still at MLB (until further notice). Ricky Brown re-signed to compete with all 3 imo.

Kelly decent. Warren decent. Bryant shows potential. Joseph awful. Warren rumored to be cut. Joseph allowed to walk in free agency. so what now? sign a real NT!

    Fargas lines up visits
Well, so much for that “Justin Fargas’s discount return” theory of mine. What was I thinking?

In a phone interview Sunday afternoon, Fargas went out of his way to speak well of the team he spent the past seven seasons with, but it was made clear to Fargas his release Saturday was the end of his road in Oakland.

“I don’t see that happening, no,” said Fargas, who was released Saturday for failing a physical — only Fargas says he’s just fine, which meshes with Adam Schefter’s report today on ESPN.com disputing the Raiders’ stated reason for cutting Fargas before he could cash in on a $1.7 million bonus this week.

“I was told by the coach that they were moving in a different direction,” Fargas said. “They said it was strictly about money. … I know some things were put out there, I guess they said I didn’t pass a physical. I’m a little disappointed by the way it happened but I understand it’s a business.

“I definitely appreciate being able to spend seven years as a Raider. I’ve always loved the Raiders. I just want to do everything I can to help another team win a championship. I still have a lot of football in me. I’m fine (health-wise).”

So where will the rest of that football be played?

Fargas has no intentions of retiring at age 30. Several teams have already contacted him and he has a visit scheduled Tuesday with the Chiefs — which would give him a chance to remind Raiders fans twice a year how he was able to lead their team in rushing three straight years.

Another team his agent has been in contact with is … the 49ers across the bay, where his ex-runnings back coach Tom Rathman is an assistant in need of a back to complement Frank Gore.

“That could be something,” Fargas said. “We’ll see. Obviously there’s going to be a time of transition for me. I just appreciate the city of Oakland and the fans for making this a home for me and their support.”

If 49ers coach Mike Singletary indeed wants a tough guy to share the load with Gore, and doesn’t want to wait for a draft pick to develop, Fargas certainly fits that bill. Stay tuned.

It’s a great day to be a Raiders fan! Isn’t it?

RRS — The Raiders being a worse team than the Jets does not make us a “finesse” team. Finesse had nothing to do with it. Can’t figure out the point you were trying to make.

Yes, the Jets were a more physical team across the board…but a lot of that has to do with their talent, and the way those particular players play the game. Fargas was no less vioent a RB as Thomas Jones, but TJ must be considered the better back — not juyst last year, but for their careers.

If only the Raiders had enough talent to be considered a “finesse” team!

LATTB — Antonio Bryant visiting? That was a rumor thrown onto the board by someone, without citing a source, trying to shake the grapevine. Would Antonio Bryant’s talents be a great addition? No doubt…but only if he really has cleared his closet of skeletons. He’s one “reformed” trouble-maker I think who might be worth taking a long look at.

And RickyLake, throwing out bad numbers to make himself look all important…he’s so clumsy in his hatred, he can’t even make a decent argument to state his case (whatever case that might be…since his hatred of anybody else’s point-of-view is the only thing that really matters to him). Our offensive line sucked. We barely even HAD any goal-line opportunities. And most of Bush’s & D-Mac’s touchdowns have NOT come in the form of goal-line TD’s.

And if you’re gonna tell me that a little pitch-out to D-Mac at the goal line is gonna be our “bread & butter” play when we need to score down there on a consistent basis, that’s crap.

If you tell me Bush if more equipped to score down there, I’ll give you that. If you’re telling me it’s D-Mac, I say to you again – spare me.

Fargas was a perfect back to have at the goal line. He attacked the line of scrimmage hard and fast. And he could dive when necessary. Unfortunately for him, his entire career was spent running behind a horrible offensive line.

The man ran for over a thousand yards in barely over a half-season of playing time just a few years ago. And even that was behind a crappy O-Line.

    You?

You’re a realtor. Entry level realty. After 25 years you’re STILL at entry level position. Because you have no ambition. Because you sit on your ass…alllll…daaayyy loooong… posting on different blogs..while the wife works.

You’re a kept man, and it just doesn’t get any sadder than that.

Kell, I see your point here.

First let me say Brett Favre and JR are two different people, really from two different generations. The loss of a loved one, especially one very close to you – who you go to for advise or a shoulder to cry on, whatever – is obviously going to effect you.

But you mean to tell me Russell sucked cause his uncle died? Even take away the play on the field. The QVC showcase he held at PHX/GS games? The pressers? The post game interviews? How visibly out of shape he is? The frohawk????

Brett Favre lost his dad and came out less than a week later and smoked us in our own barn.

Smoked us like a holiday ham. Smoked us like a J at Norco’s tailgate.

He played his heart out despite, perhaps because, of what happened.

I really wish I could see Russell doing this but I can’t.

For now…. he sucks. I don’t care who is in his ear, his enterouge (sp i know), or on his phone, whatever.

JR has run out of excuses.

    RIIIIGHT…

If he is that mentally strong then you can throw out the theory that he’s still being affected by the loss of a few uncles.

you’d think that would motivate him to work harder and make them proud, no? I lost my mom last year and I don’t wallow around in self-pity. You learn to deal with it and move on. It’s a part of life. When you go to work you leave your personal baggage at the door.

My main concern is the current state of the Oakland Raiders. I have prepared for you a “To Do List” for the offseason. Do with it what you may, just thought I would try and help…here you go:

    1. Hire a real NFL coach
    2. Draft an offensive tackle, NT and LBers in the draft
    3. Sign a good blocking FB or draft one
    4. Replace your current RG and C
    5. Beg, borrow or steal a starting QB
    6. Fire Herrera

    Good luck Mr. Davis!

“Maybe he can’t coach, but at least Cable can get along with Al Davis!”

“Fargas can’t score and has never lead a team to a victory, but at least he is tough!”

“Gradkowski is a career loser, but at least he isn’t Russell!”

Are we really so bad off that we can accept guys like Cable, Fargas and Garbagekowski?

  215. LA to TheBay Says:

    Seymour franchised.
    Green unsigned as of yet.
Routt tendered at the highest level.
Morrison tendered at the third round level.
Frye and Gradkowski tendered, expected to be back.
Warren and Fargas rumored to be cut. One down, one to go.

Is it possible this is because:

The Raiders don’t want Green back
They aren’t trading Nnamdi and think Johnson sucked
    They want a new MLB
They want a QB competition (or just anyone but JR)
They want their young RBs to show promise and
They know Warren is overpaid and needs to be upgraded?

Maybe this is The Year? Is March 8th too early to be drinking the Kool Aid?

    New MLB
    New NT
    New RT

    No Fargas
    No Russell
    No Warren?

    More DMC
    More Zach

Now Green is crappy Buffalos problem.

Green should have be cut two year ago!

If a OT is drafted lets hope the pick is the Michael Oher type in Anthony Davis who can play LT or RT and is strong in the running game and passing game and physical.

The 10 td whine about Fargas IS pretty damn weak.

Point was made, which is true, that for some “odd” reason, Fargas is pulled inside the red zone, especially inside the 10.

is it because they’re hoping to prop up other players? Hoping to get recent picks “stats”? hard to imagine it’s no confidence in Fargas.

Sure wasn’t because McF or Bush was doing anything.

    ************************************

First off, we’re agreeing on something? Let me perform CPR on myself, as I just about choked on my dried banana chips.

But might as well run with it! LOL

My point is that NONE of our backs have been able to consistently pound the ball into the end zone from inside the 5 yard line since 2002 (a.k.a. Wheatley & the boys).

    Koolkell:

Yeah, did you ever stop and consider why Fargas would run into the center’s ass and “flop”?

Maybe it’s because the center and the rest of the boys to his left & right seldom provide any kind of push up the middle, or to the ends.

    Dakota:

Of course D-Mac & Bush are more talented. I’ve never denied that.

But from what the 3 have shown me thus far in their careers, if I’m starting a team today, I still take Fargas.

But I already know I’m losing this battle around here.

Only coincidence is you and JR both suck at your job.

    ***

    LOL!

    and ouch!

the reason JR isn’t progressing is because he’s not putting the work in. nobody has said anything about how the loss of a family member has affected his play. not even Russell himself. This is nothing more than a made up excuse to give the kid another crack at the starting job. I’m fine with that, but he’ll have to earn it.
    ======================================
Lot’s of players lose loved ones.
Everyone loses loved ones, at some point or another.
Some players/whoever can show up at work and block it out, and perform…others need more time..whether it’s a couple of days, or a couple of weeks.

BUT NO ONE NEEDS MONTHS, much less a whole year.

    As you said…it’s just excuses.
Not JR’s fault he’s fat..it’s the 1200 calories in each of those Double Whoppers he ate.
Not his fault the WR’s didn’t get to the ball…they should have known where he was throwing it, and gone to that exact spot.
Not his fault he’s late, all the traffic lights should have changed green, just for him.
Not his fault he can’t grasp the playbook, it’s the coaches fault for making the plays so confusing.

the same sorry fools that make excuses for JR will also make excuses on how it was the teams fault JR got released, not JR’s..that he ‘wasn’t handled properly”..

    Excuses=Loser

Fargas was better for us. As a full time starter, he got 1000 yards in half the game it took LaMont.

  293. Dakota Says:

    Silver-n-Smac,

Please post one comment where I have said McFadden has been stellar. None of our RBs have been stellar for many reasons.

None of our RBs can be stellar without a decent o-line, HC and QB. When we drafted McFadden we had a good o-line, then Tom Cable got involved and Kwame Harrised us…we had a decent HC that was at least keeping us in games, then Kiffin and Al blew it apart and now we have a HC that would not have been allowed to coach lowere level college two years ago. Russell was supposed to be a decent QB, instead he turned out to be a joke and our RBs have to face unreal odds every game.

Fargas had a decent stretch back in 07 before Al drug us further into the abyss, but we know waht he gives us…three and outs and no TDs. McFadden and Bush at least give us a chance to score…Fargas would have been a great RB to keep as a backup and it was a mistake to keep Cable and let Fargas go…but Al knew Cable would keep shooting himself in the foot with Fargas, so now we lose Fargas.

It just isn’t that big of a loss.

Sorry to break the news. If McFadden has another bad year, then I will gladly give him the Fargas treatment too…but you can’t give up on that young of a player…on the other hand, a seven year vet that has produced next to nothing….yeah, time to move on.

Maybe Al is out of money and is being forced to turn into Bidwill Jr. for the time being. Al knows there will be no football in 2011, so why hire a real coach when you can keep a lousy one for one last season and then not pick up the team option in 2011 and save yourself big $$? Why sign a bunch of free agents when you think a new salary cap structure will be likely in 2012? Al is probably just throwing away 2010 as nothing more than a year to see if Jackson can make something out of Russell.

    —————

It’s not a question of which guy is the more valuable player. It’s a question of: which player fits which team’s needs…balanced against the going-rate $$ for each of those positions.

Yes, Stanford Routt is definitely worth a #3, and probably more like a #2…he could start on half the teams in the NFL this year. His impact in his first year on a new team would be more than ALMOST anything a rookie DB could provide. Routt’s peak may still be around the corner.

Yes, Morrison makes a lot of tackles, and he’s a great teammate. But, just like Fargas, he doesn’t get the job done AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Morrison is valuable…to the Raiders, or to potential teams…but, this Raiders team needs THE MAN in the middle. Kirk is not THE MAN (although I think he’s at least worth his tender).

Their value$ only matter to the teams that want to pay them — see what happened to Cornell Green, and then try and make sense of who deserves how much. If Green’s worth $3 Mill per, how much are either Morrison or Routt worth on the market? A lot more than that, for sure.

What does it say that the Oakland Tribune and Inside the Bay Area, did not send a Reporter to the Combine?

    =============================

One of the few times I’ll agree with Reek.

    The REASON again.

Recesion and digital age destroying print media.

  384. Norco Bob Says:

Old kell,..they didnt send anyone to the combine?…and whats your point?…what that tells me is nobody gives a crap about the combine,…you didnt actually watch any of that did you?…you think the Trib would send Jerry there so he could watch what he could watch on tv?…because Cable and the rest would ignore him there, just as they do here. Hey now.

  385. Richochet Says:

That suspiciously coincides with a 90 day ban.

    Not saying…just saying…

I will soon as I get some kind of proof.

Me too. I’d hate to have the biggest bust in NFL history part of Raider lore and used as ammo by our numerous haters.

Plus, seems like a decent enough guy.

IF he gets his head screwed on straight, he could be an Elway caliber QB.

Nowhere on my post did i say i value him more than Morrison. READ.

    Your missing the whole point

    **********************

O.K., well, what I took away from your post is that teams are gonna put a high-round tender on players they value and don’t want to lose (a.k.a. Routt) and a lower realistic tender on players they believe are replaceable (a.k.a. Morrison).

So which part of your post did I misunderstand?

The part where you said I think Routt is more valuable. Thats what Al thinks. As you can see by what he tendered them.

And if you look at the Draft depth and FA available….not too many DBs are out there..

preaching, SNS. Do you take exception to everyone in here preaching? Because you’ve got a lot of work to do.

No exception taken. Just wondering where the hell all that came from. What’s the whole diatribe about the 2 wins in a row??? Did I deny that or something???

    DeuceDeuce Says:

How can you possibly believe that Routt is a more valuable player than Morrison?
Do you really believe there is a GM out there that would give you more for Routt than Morrison?

    I didnt say that.

  390. Silver-n-Smac Says:

    Deuce –

I have much respect for Al, but, I guess I’m just not seeing the value in Routt.

Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe he’s just not fit to play the man-to-man style we play.

I will say this: The best game I ever remember Routt having was this past season against the Eagles.

Not coincidentally, we played almost exclusively zone defense in that game.

Maybe it’s not him – maybe it’s the scheme.

  391. Nnamdi21 Says:

Glad we didn’t forray into FA.

Other than Kiffen’s FA fiasco, we seem to be building thru the draft.

Surprisingly our later round picks are emerging as players.

Tyvon, Scott, Murphy, Shaunnessy ect. while our big ticket guys languish.

I pray Davis doesn’t think simply keeping THIS unit togehter is the answer.

we need help in several areas.

    Fix the O line please.

O.K. – this conversation has gone completely out of whack!

    I said it, not Duece.

But frankly, I’m getting a bit bored by it now!

  393. SteveAlford21 Says:

    Silver-n-Smac,

Sorry for the delay, I had to entertain a customer. Anyway, I don’t see a problem with Becht’s size at RG as long as he can execute and block someone reasonably often and have less than three False Starts per game. Fulfilling those obligations alone would be a vast improvement over Cornell Yellow (the amount of flags thrown his way has shifted his last name over a few notches on the color spectrum).

If nothing else, he could be used as the anti-Gary Russell (OVERsized Fullback).

    Thats a joke right?

5-11, 215 isn’t exactly over sized especially for FB

    Get it together!!!!

  398. SteveAlford21 Says:

    Because Gary Russell is undersized.

  399. DKnight007 Says:

Uhh…if Morrison had some a decent D-Line in front of him he would do just fine.

Sign Jamal Williams and pair him up with Seymour inside and draft a BEAST RDE who can get to the passer and remain stout versus the run!
