Larry Johnson to visit?

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, March 10th, 2010 at 10:24 am in Oakland Raiders.

Running back Larry Johnson, who finished last season with the Cincinnati Bengals after wearing out his welcome with the Kansas City Chiefs, will visit the Raiders, according to Profootballtalk.com.

Johnson gained 204 yards on 46 carries in seven games with the Bengals. He hasn’t broken 1,000 yards since 2006, the year he carried 416 times, gained 1,789 yards and scored 19 touchdowns _ 17 of them rushing.

In 11 games against the Raiders for the Chiefs (and a 2-carry, 5-yard game last season against Oakland for the Bengals), Johnson has 224 carries, 943 yards and 11 touchdowns with four games of 100 yards or better.

    Interesting article regarding the Texans early handling of David Carr. Sounds familiar:

    The Texans used their first pick on a guy they believed would be a franchise quarterback, and then they did almost everything wrong. They failed to put a quality offensive line in front of him. They failed to put enough good receivers and running backs around him.

    The Texans never even hired a real quarterbacks coach. Here was this strong-armed, raw-boned kid out of Fresno State, this kid with such a good heart, this kid who wanted to do everything right, and much of the incompetence that defined the Texans in those early years can be summed up by their care and handling

    Could the Raiders be looking into a 3-4 defense?

    Call me crazy. Tell me about Marshall being a 4-3 disciple (wasn’t Ryan a 3-4 disciple?) – yada, yada, yada.

    Ellis gone. Talk of Warren gone. Tenders on two of the starting LBs were low vs. Condo, Routt, etc. No tender to Sam Williams.

    Seymour, Shaunessy & Richardson – better 3-4 ends? – some have called Seymour the best of the last decade. Heck, even Kelly might fit well too.

    A few DTs in the draft who could fit the nose tackle position nicely. Looks like we need some LBs. Hmmmm.

    Did the better run stuffing teams play more of a base 3-4?

    Interesting thought – or not. Might be nothing – or could be?

    Even with the giant fork sticking out of Johnson’s back, he would arguably be our best back

  6. Pretty Rick Says:

    Larry Johnson is an older version of Micheal Bush, whatever,,might be ok. All jokes aside, can we get a JaMarcus Russell update? Last thing I heard about him was that he look like he shed a few pounds, so atleast thats a positive sign. And whats going on with Darren McFadden? I hope he’s hitting the weights hard & putting some meat on his legs so he can stop going down so easy. And what was Buffalo thinking by signing Green? If history repeats itself then he’ll probably end up back in Oakland like Langston Walker.

    Man, why the hell does everyone have “favorites” when it comes to our starting QB???

    If we had been a good team the past few years, it’s a worthy topic.

    But we’ve sucked for too long.

    And every single Raider fan should care only about one thing at this point – and that is WINNING.

    If it’s Grad, Russell, or MaddenRaider’s blow-up doll that starts winning games for us, that should make every one of us happy.

    I agree with you to a point Vegas. But it’s moer than that. I’m a fan of this organization, win or lose. And the media criticism, aside from the fact that I think it’s unfair, stings me. In 2007, this organization made JaMarcus the No. 1 overall pick. And under Kiffin, things were on the right track. This team was good at the end of 2008 with JR at the helm. It went wrong in the offseason. We need to recapture that, and hopefully Hue Jackson’s hiring can help us do it. If JR gets run out of town, a million gallons of fuel will added to the “Raiders are a laugingstock to the NFL” fire. Don’t want to see that happen.

    No question here either because they’ve SAID it.

    Yes, he does. Always has, thats why I was pissed they pulled him outa that KC game like they did.

    For sure. The only good thing that came from the KC benching is that it debunked the myth that Grads played better with the same supporting cast. DHB ruined Russell and Grads in that game. The offense got a huge boost when in the Pitt game when DHB went to the bench and Chaz and JLH were starting. See any similarities to the last few games of 2008? Murphy played his best football all season as a third WR.

    Dude, I’ll step up now and say JR is my favorite player. The biggest reason I’m a Raider fan is the renegade, us-against-the-world aura the team has around it.

    RICHOCHET: AHHHHH..the weakest of the weak…an “image” fan. The “I’m a dweeb, but does this pirate shirt make me look like less of a dweeb? ” Sorryass reason to be a fan of ANYTHING.
    ————————–
    And it’s clear to me after taking in everything from the media and what’s been posted on this site by guys like you the past several months that there isn’t a player in the league who exemplifies “me against the world” more than JR.

    Richochet: In other words, all the losers of the world you gravitate towards?
    Nifty.

    ####################
    To me, he’s the perfect Raider QB: The guy that everyone, including most Raider fans, love to hate.

    RICHOCHET: lol..yep…an image fan. “Oh…look Ma..I’s a rebel..I’s a pirate…do I look cool, Ma?”
    No, you look pathetic.

    ##################
    I love the fact that he’s dismissive of the media. They deserve it as far as I’m concerned.

    RICHOCHET: And the media loves the fact they get to rake him over the coals because of his dismissive behavior. The media LOVES that he gives them non-stop ammo. You’re just too ignorant to realize he’s playing into their hands. Being an “image” fan also means you’re a rather ’slow’ fan.
    ##################
    I like the anti-QB outfits and bling after games too. That’s his style and he’s not caving to anyone else’s idea of what a QB should look or sound like.

    RICHOCHET: lol…geez..you’re an idiot. He’s being labeled as ignorant, immature, a user, uncommitted, and as one of the biggest busts OF ALL TIME..THAT’S HOW HE’S PERCEIVED..and partly because acting all that when you haven’t accomplished SHYTE sets you up to be laughed at…AND BOOED AT BASKETBALL GAMES, AT AIRPORTS…ON THE FIELD…WALKING OFF THE FIELD…AT MALLS…all because of his “I don’t give a damn about all of you..I’M RICH..AND I AM JUST GOING TO ENJOY MY MONEY..TO HELL WITH YOU, AND TO HELL WITH THE RAIDERS.”
    And yeah, his ignorant uneducated ass is also laughing at fools like you..for backing him.

    ##########################
    He doesn’t waste time trying to answer his critics and after he’s pulled out victories for us, he doesn’t seek the glory.

    RICHOCHET: Sure, he did, dumbass. When asked how he felt he was doing, after being the worst qb in the league? He stated “I’m happy with where I am in my development” When asked about having the worst completion % in the league? He replied “Receivers aren’t where I’m throwing the ball. They’ll get better in time.” The dumbass threw his fellow players under the bus..while NEVER TAKING THE BLAME FOR HIS BAD PLAY.
    ######################

    I can honestly say that I’ve never rooted more for another QB to kick ass. If for no other reason because just about everyone wants him to fail so badly.

    RICHOCHET: Wrong, moron. What everyone is saying is that they’re sick and tired of him FAILING SO BADLY, AND NOT GIVING A DAMN.

    But..then again…you’re not a Raider fan..you’re an “image” fan..and, as I stated, the worst reason to be a fan of any team.

    Bad news? You’re stuck with that Russell jersey, and don’t DARE WEAR IT, lol..

    Tom Cable’s status: “We’re going to work every day like it’s the same. Coach Cable is in there working, and that’s all I care about. I don’t look into details. I just go in there, take care of my own business, and whoever is there I’m going to work with and we’re going to be just fine.”

    =========

    Translation: Party line, none of your business.

    If he’s the antithesis of JaMarcus Russell in terms of work ethic and is that what won his teammates over: “I think ti was the way I’ve been raised. I’ve known no different than being a blue-collar guy, to work hard, and you’re going get what you deserve and I believe that . . . I’m not worried about how other people do their jobs. I’m just worried about being a professional, taking care of my own business, and when the opportunity comes, taking advantage of it.”

    ================

    Translation: Party line. Russell? No comment.

    His status with the Raiders as an RFA: I haven’t officially signed with them yet. They offered a second-round tender and so it’s still free agency going on, so there’s other teams out there, but in my heart, I want to be in Oakland. I believe I’ll be in Oakland and I’d like to be here for years to come. I just feel a good presence here.”

    =================

    Translation: No where else would have me. Honestlty, if we’re going to “start” a nobody like Grad why not just keep McClown.

    ====================

    Whether he’s been assured of open competition at QB: “I think that’s the way it should take place, and I think that’s the way it will take place, and I’m looking forward to it. I’m just excited to get this opportunity.”

    ======================

    Translation: again, no where else in the League could I even have a snowballs chance of starting except oakland. partly because I couldn’t make another squad and because Russell’s garbage effort.

    ==========

    What players were saying during the Randy Hanson controversy: “I think the players just have to worry about our job, just coming to work every day and letting that stuff be handled by the people that handle that situation . . . yeah, it’s been unusual, but I think Mr. Davis realy just wants to win, wants the best for his players and he’s trying to get it done. I think right now we have a very good setup in the coaches and players around us and a good team. I hope the fans back us from Day 1, because we can use that, and w need them a part of this year and to be a part of this thing when we turn it around.”

    ====

    Translation: I ain’t sayin sh-ite while I’ve got a shot at starting so party line, Davis is great, Coaches are lovely, kids stay in school say no to drugs, hugs and kisses and I’m out.

    If he needed a volume button on his helmet radio when the excitable Jon Gruden was coach: “I needed a mute button, honestly.”

    I really don’t care about him restructuring his contract or not.

    Paying Russell is not gonna hinder Al from getting other players. It’s not like Al has ever NOT been able to sign a player he wanted.

    The bottom line is that Russell needs to grow up and show that he cares about football, for himself, for the team & for all the loyal supporters of the team.

    If he does that I am willing to give ANYONE a 2nd chance.

    Richochet… again posted nothing insightful. Did manage to cut and paste everyones posts again though, you are definitely the master of that. Not really sure you know anything about football or the Raiders or if you actually have an opinion about the team at all. What I do know for sure… you HATE EVERYONE here.

    If Jamarcus restructures, he has to be completely awful to not make the roster.

    If Jamarcus doesn’t restructure, he has to be completely awesome to make the roster.

    That’s how I would handle it.
    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

    Not well said. No way he gets cut even if he’s not “awesome” Put yourself in Davis’ shoes. No matter what happens, JR walks with $40 million. $40 million!!!! Do you really think he’ll risk letting that happen over $6 million?? And remember, Davis has shown patience of late with his high draft picks. Watch the firing of Lane Kiffin on Youtube. He loves the guy. And Davis knows football. Regardless of his work ethic or perceived lack thereof, I’m willing to bet that he understands that JR hasn’t been surrounded with the proper supporting cast. Plus, he’s had highlights, i.e. the Denver and KC games. Sorry my friend. He gets a mulligan for last season.

    I can play too… guess I am not a moron anymore because I know how to cut and paste just like you. Grrr the big bad blog bully told me to go away. Oh what ever shall I do. By the way…. you neglected to “quote” where exactly I was whining? I was simply calling you out for your lack of posting ANYTHING Raider, or football in general, related here.

    You know…LAST YEAR you ran the “The prior year was JR’s actual first year..LET’S SEE HOW HE DOES THIS YEAR, then we’ll know”

    And now? lol..you’re running the same take as last year..that after THIS YEAR you’ll know.

    This is year FOUR.

    At some point reality sets in.

    *************************************

    Yeah well, could definitely be true. I definitely could be drinking too much Koolaid and I have no problem admitting that.

    But personally, I’ve always really believed in that “3 year rule”. Not literally of course, but, the point being that some players take longer to develop.

    Russell’s been in the league for 3 years but on the field for about 2.

    Could be that it’s a lost cause for sure.

    I’m just not ready to give up yet.

    I’m not handing him the starting job by any means. I just don’t see the harm in keeping him around if he shows some sincere effort this offseason.

    Let’s be real. After the 2008 season, he didn’t receive the amount of utter ridicule that he received this year because everyone (including me) gave him a pass for basically having the “rookie” blues.

    If he’s any kind of man, he’s gonna respond to that criticism by putting out an effort.

    If he doesn’t. . . .like I said – cut the ties with him then.

    Jamarcus dressing up like a pimp, with that ridiculous “Chosen One” chain (to go with his chosen one tattoo) at that b-ball game a couple months back looks like such a fool. Doesn’t he realize nearly EVERYONE is laughing at him? Nobody respects him. The media, the fans, NOBODY. He is nothing more than one of the biggest punch lines in sports. A complete joke.

    The funniest part is when he gets cut by the Raiders and NOBODY picks him up and he gets to look in the mirror and realize what a complete failure and fake he was. Even the Arena league won’t take him cuz he’s too slow for even them; mentally AND physically.

    If he’s been making bad investments and gambling on top of it, he could very well be broke in a few years, Funny thing is he’s most likely banking on ANOTHER big pay day that will NEVER COME.

    I want the Raiders to win, but only AFTER Jamarcus is taken out of the 3rd game of the season and cut from the team after another typical “Jamarcus like” failure of colossal proportions.

    Enjoy the money you stole from Al Davis Jadoofus. It won’t last forever, ‘Chosen One’.
