Updated: Quiet at Cal Pro Day
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, March 10th, 2010 at 11:53 am in Oakland Raiders.
Beat writer Steve Corkran reports the Raiders are represented by a single scout and none of the coaches at Cal’s Pro Day at Memorial Stadium.
Cal running back Jahvid Best will not run at the Pro Day, letting his 4.35 time in the 40-yard dash at the NFL scouting combine stand.
Best’s time was the fastest among all running backs, ahead of the 4.37 by C.J. Spiller.
For what it’s worth, and given the inexact science of NFL 40 times, Best’s time a fraction behind the 4.33 time by Darren McFadden at the 2008 combine.
At least year’s Cal Pro Day, coach Tom Cable and much of his staff were at Memorial Stadium, watching closely, in particular Cal center Alex Mack.
Mack was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the first round and was a rookie starter.
UPDATE:
Speaking with reporters, Best said he talked with Raiders assistants Kelly Skipper (running backs) and Jim Michalczik (offensive line) at the combine and believes his 40 time met with their approval.
“They did interview me,” Best said. “I think I showed them Raiders speed.”

No, we just snagged the offensive line coach from Cal. I’ll bet he knows what is going on over there. No need to attend.

You know…LAST YEAR you ran the “The prior year was JR’s actual first year..LET’S SEE HOW HE DOES THIS YEAR, then we’ll know”
And now? lol..you’re running the same take as last year..that after THIS YEAR you’ll know.
This is year FOUR.
At some point reality sets in.
*************************************
Yeah well, could definitely be true. I definitely could be drinking too much Koolaid and I have no problem admitting that.
But personally, I’ve always really believed in that “3 year rule”. Not literally of course, but, the point being that some players take longer to develop.
Russell’s been in the league for 3 years but on the field for about 2.
Could be that it’s a lost cause for sure.
I’m just not ready to give up yet.
I’m not handing him the starting job by any means. I just don’t see the harm in keeping him around if he shows some sincere effort this offseason.
Let’s be real. After the 2008 season, he didn’t receive the amount of utter ridicule that he received this year because everyone (including me) gave him a pass for basically having the “rookie” blues.
If he’s any kind of man, he’s gonna respond to that criticism by putting out an effort.
If he doesn’t. . . .like I said – cut the ties with him then.

Not well said. No way he gets cut even if he’s not “awesome” Put yourself in Davis’ shoes. No matter what happens, JR walks with $40 million. $40 million!!!!
****************************
First off, I said that’s what I would do, not what Davis would do. I wouldn’t be suprised with anything Al does these days. He may not even ask him to restructure, and than order him not to play. Who knows?
Second, like you said he gets $40 million no matter what. So if that’s the case, why not view the situation with a forward looking viewpoint instead of rearview one? That money is gone, the better question should be, what will we get in 2010 for $9 million.
Besides, Al didn’t seem to concerned about giving Walker all that dough and cutting him.
This is a make or break year for Russell, IMO. And if Al asks him to restructure, which will give him a smaller salary but more guaranteed money, I am sure his agent will tell him to do it.

March 10th, 2010 at 12:28 pm
Not to defend Javon Walker but come on Al and Cable you are makin this mofo so much money and dont let him play WTF. I dont know how many times last season i was so pissed cause he would not hit the field after report he looked good in training camp and him sayin i feel good. F-ing davis and cable
March 10th, 2010 at 12:38 pm
Does anyone know where I can get an offical Russel jersey? I want it to have real game time stains on it. You know the usual ketchup and mustard stains that you get on that sweet silver and white sitting on the freakin bench!!!! That motha fu!!!!………..See this is why I had to stay away from my team for medical reasons. This team makes me crazy.
March 10th, 2010 at 12:41 pm
I guess we can’t claim roster spots on the Raiders are precious anymore after the Raiders wasted two of them for the entire year last season with Walker and N. Miller.
March 10th, 2010 at 12:43 pm
Raider 619.
You are 100% right. How could Walker play anymore crappy than DHB? Plus, you are paying Walker all that cash it just made no sense. How did Walker have Al by the b@lls like that? Was Walker partying with one of Als family members when he got eat down out in Vegas? It just does not make sense why you would carry a guy like Walker for nothing. It was like Al treated the whole situation like Walker hit the number playing lottery than actually working on the field. Freakin crazy!!!!!!!!!!!

wow, I killed the last 2 posts
ok, Ben Tate in the 4th or 5th
Here’s a rundown.
40-yard dash: 4.43 seconds – third place behind Cal’s Jahvid Best (4.35) and Clemson’s C.J. Spiller (4.37).
Bench press: 26 repetitions – tied for first place with Fresno State’s Lonyae Miller.
Vertical leap: 40.5” – second place behind Tennessee’s Monterio Hardesty (41.0”).
Broad jump: 10’4” – tied for first place with Hardesty.
3-cone drill: 6.91 seconds – sixth place behind Best (6.75), Wayne State’s Joique Bell (6.84), Oregon’s LeGarrette Blount (6.85), Hardesty (6.87) and Buffalo’s James Starks (6.89).
20-yard shuttle: 4.12 seconds – second place behind Ole Miss’ Dexter McCluster (4.06).

The fans need to create a “make or break” year for Al Davis.
March 10th, 2010 at 12:54 pm
619 you have to be strong man. We are all in this crap hole together. The sad part is I can’t blame Al for all of the mess just 70% of it. : )
I mean lets be honest. If someone told you 5 years ago you could have Russel, DMAC, and Michael Bush on your team to improve your offense. I think 90% of the fans would have said I will take those guys. I mean, all three were Heisman candidates at one time. I thought Hall was going to be a good free agent opposite Nnamdi. Man was I wrong.
Now Walker always sound to me like a dumb @$$ move. At $75 mill. Yeah, Al was ready to check out on that deal.
March 10th, 2010 at 12:57 pm
Not me, CJ! Don’t put words into our mouths. Now I know Richochet’s going to bring up my support of Russell early on last year but you can also look back to ‘07 and see that I clearly wanted Calvin Johnson or Adrian Peterson. I wanted either Dorsey or Ellis over McFadden. Don’t sit here and act like everyone was as naive as you were.
March 10th, 2010 at 12:59 pm
And, we are strong, CJ legend. Why would we be weak for wanting Al Davis gone? Explain to me how the support of Al Davis equates to “strenghth” in any way, and vice versa.

March 10th, 2010 at 1:37 pm
I don’t understand why AL wants Larry Johnson, the guy is another Javon Walker alike player, basically a washed up RB, I would rather take Willie Parker instead of him. If AL wanted a RB, he had a chance to get Thomas Jones instead of facing him twice now. It seems AL doesn’t trust DMAC and Bush, also if we draft or sign another QB, it will mean Russell will get cut. Everyone keeps saying that if AL cuts Russel it will mean he failed as a talent evaluator, AL knows a lost cause when he sees it, I think AL will wait and see what Russel does this offseason and in training camp, if he sucks again, he is gone.
March 10th, 2010 at 1:37 pm
The NBA is a joke now. This current Laker team doesn’t even beat the ‘02 Kings or Mavs, let alone the ‘02 Lakers. If there was some way to do a realistic simulation, current Lakers vs. ‘02 Kings, ‘02 Kings would would sweep them in a best of 7, and win all 4 games by ten or more.

Senecca Wallace going to the Browns and Delhomme heading in for a visit. Doesn’t sound good for Brady Quinn. And he has a work ethic. I wish we were at least rumoring to be looking for another QB. Maybe Jamarcus might start working out a little.

Ghost to the Post,
Do you think we cold convince Russell, Quinn and a European doctor to transplant Quinn’s heart and head into Russell’s body?
With Quinn’s work ethic and Russell’s body he would be great.
Russell could still keep his money and he would look better at the beach (after major tanning of course)…

March 10th, 2010 at 1:57 pm
Quinn would whip Russell’s body into shape and then start throwing bombs down the field. Russell’s problem isn’t his body, it is his weak lazy ass mind and lack of heart that allows his talent filled body to go into disrepair.
Sad….
March 10th, 2010 at 1:59 pm

March 10th, 2010 at 1:59 pm
Ya, I would like to say its not his fault,..him being given every job hes had,…but whatever it is, he doesnt know how to compete, to earn the job,..hasnt a clue how to,…its looking more and more like the little Polock will be starter in 2010,…so be it.
March 10th, 2010 at 2:00 pm
Dakota lets be honest we could save the money on the Dr. and Sign young Quinn to a much less expensive offer and scrap the Russell project and move on. And I’m not saying Quinn is better but, I know between him and Gradikowski they have more drive and heart than Jamarcus well ever have.

Hey. I continue to watch the Raiders from last year and recognize that we are better than our record. It is hard to sift through the JRuss garbage, and it is garbage (It is so apparent that the guy is just trying to wing it out there with the ball and his general play). But the d has some real bright spots. I was pretty impressed by Warren and Routt in looking back. Routt got burned but I am thinking the franchise thing is a bet on what he is going to be, the film I watched last night hints that he is close. And Warren, the guy was pretty disruptive. The linebacker play needs to improve. As does the coahing. The thing needs to be tighter. But there was some good stuff not looking through the glasses of dissappointment that I look through as the year progresses.

I think this is exactly right. Continuity is going to help big time for a change. Hue Jackson most likely will relate to Jamarcus more than Paul Hackett. And the choke chain on Russell can’t ba a bad thing either. The only real question is can Hue convince Derrick Mason to take “Jivin’s” roster spot. Here is a guy, 13 years in the league, who has always produced. THERE, is your veteran guy our young guys need for guidance.

Yes we need a good veteran receiver but, it’s not like Chaz Scheilens is in his 2nd yr or 3 yr for that matter. We need to let the young wide receivers play. Even DHB. Even if it kills me to write it. He needs playing time. so did Jamarcus but, he didn’t even get that you have to put in the work. He is clueless.

McClain reveals he has Crohn’s disease
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 10, 2010 5:32 PM ET
Alabama linebacker Rolando McClain’s Pro Day got off to a fine start with an expected time in the forty.
He didn’t finish his drills, however, after getting ill. After the workout, he disclosed he has fought Crohn’s Disease since his freshman year in high school. It’s treated through medication.
We’re amazed this information wasn’t out already, but it clearly hasn’t prevented McClain from producing. David Garrard was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease during his career and it hasn’t slowed him down.
Still, we wonder if this will cause teams to look at McClain any differently – positively or negatively. Perhaps the biggest knock on McClain is his inconsistent motor and effort.
Maybe his Crohn’s Disease plays into that, maybe it doesn’t. It’s just one more piece to the puzzle for teams to figure out by April’s draft.

Not only print it but, let’s be honest since he was in Jr. High he has been given everything as an athelete, they have catered to him and they have coddled him and now he doesn’t even understand how to do anything for himself. He is completely lost.
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
Like your point about continuity. JR hasn’t had that at WR since he was drafted. As a rookie, his go-to guy was Jerry Porter. He doesn’t get re-signed. Then we pick up Drew Carter and Walker for the 2008 Season. JR built good chemistry with Carter only to have him blow his knee out in the preseason. So we pick up Ashlie Lelie off the street. By the end of the season, JR has it going with Chaz and JLH. You figure they go into the 2009 season as starters, right? We all know the rest. For finishing the 2008 season strong, JR gets Murphy and DHB as starters in 2009. And he was supposed to light it up, right? And even with those guys, we should have been 2-0 to if not for the ‘give up” D we played on the last drive of the SD game. But once Gallery and Green got hurt, we couldn’t protect a QB in his 2nd year as a starter with Murphy and DHB as the starting WRs. Not a recipe for success. Al knows this. I don’t believe the leash is as short as a lot of you would like to think.

Other than Julius Peppers this has been a pretty weak free agent class. David Carr? Jesus. I mean Buffalo was in such dire need they spent big on Cornell “False Start” Green! That Cornell Green was one of the marquee OL has to tell ya something. I think we did the right thing by shedding some guys, and building thru a deep draft. Looking at the CB selection in this draft, it’s no wonder Al put a high tag on (shake, shudder) Routt.

One can only hope. As I have said here a couple times, we certainly needed some offensive linemen and Al really had to have that big fast WR that can stretch the field. Last year, there were some real good Oline propsects, but the biggest, fastest major conference WR was DHB. So they grabbed him. This year, there are AGAIN some real real good Oline prospects, but no big fast major college WR’s. I think I see where Al was going with this. So, to answer your question, expect either Bulaga or Anthony Davis at 8 overall.

March 10th, 2010 at 4:33 pm
Some players showed disregard for authority. In one ugly incident, which occurred a few days before the Raiders’ 34-21 loss to the Cowboys on Nov. 19, defensive end Anthony Smith attacked his position coach, Floyd Peters, after Peters questioned his play during a meeting. Witnesses say the 6′3″, 265-pound Smith knocked the 60-year-old Peters to the ground while other players and coaches watched. Yet Smith started against Dallas, which disgusted many of his teammates.
“The problem with the Raiders is there’s no accountability,” says one prominent veteran. “People say Al Davis is too involved. Hell, I think he should get more involved, if that’s what it would take.”
Last season Davis spent less time around the players and coaches than he had in previous years, but he remained the Raiders’ absolute authority figure.
Mike Silver S.I. 1996

I would us sign Larry Johnson and then trade Bush for Mcnabb straight up. In the draft I, if we stay at 8, I would take WR Dez Bryant if we can’t get one of the premier Ot’s or DT’s. I like the potential of bryant, schillens, Murphy, Bey and Miller. Higgins is done.
Then take DT terrance cody in the second and RB hardesty and MLB sean lee in the third. rest of the draft used on beef..

On how he led the Raiders: “When I came to Oakland in 1999, I didn’t sign up to be the team jerk but I was taken aback by the things I was seeing. Guys being late to meetings, guys missing practices. Sometimes, something had to be said. … You’re never going to have 53 guys committed. But if you have 45 or 48, you’re gonna beat the team that has 25. When I first got to Oakland, I would say we were batting about .500. I like Murph a lot! His attitude is what this team needs. He needs to be locked up for the forseeable future. Let him be the eventual veteran leader in the locker room. I’m sure with his work ethic, those dropped passes from last year will decrease drastically this season. Look for him to have a breakout year this season – 60-75 rec. Mark it down, lol. Hey Bey should be ok too. He seemed to have a positive (bordeline naive) attitude despite his lack of success; that is a good sign. priorities, and in this precise order:
General Mananger
Head Coach
Offensive and Defensive Coordinator assigned by HC
At least 3 offensive linemen either at a pro bowl level or projected to be there within 3 years by most independent, accredited scouts.
Quarterback
At least one more defensive lineman and one more linebacker that play exceptional against the run.
Then, Larry Johnson.

I still blame things on the 2004 draft. That was the strongest draft IMO, and we drafted a G with the 2nd pick, and a C in the 2nd RD. Most of those players drafted in the 1st 2 TDs ended up being PBers. We lost our C to FA, and the G never made the PB.

March 10th, 2010 at 6:22 pm
If not Cable…then who? I mean…all I’ve wanted is some consistency with the buttload of coaches we’ve had so maybe Cable isn’t the best choice in the world but theres certainly been worse and at least hes getting better coaches like Hue Jackson to help him. We weren’t getting anywhere having a different coach every 2 years and we’d probably hire some other loser if we let Cable go anyways so why not?
March 10th, 2010 at 6:23 pm
Norco – The people on the other side of the border probably have a lot to do with some of the drugs you like so why you gonna shoot them? Its not the mexican people the government is trying to keep out, its all the drugs, especially the crystal meth. Saw a program about that lastnight. All I have to say is…WOW!

Anthony Davis has odd day
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 10, 2010 8:51 PM ET
A few offensive line coaches showed up to Rutgers’ Pro Day Wednesday, hoping to watch tackle Anthony Davis work out.
According to Mike Mayock on NFL Network, Davis didn’t show up because of a hamstring injury that wasn’t fully communicated to teams. Feeling sick, Davis wasn’t even at the school. (Hmm.)
Mayock reports that coaches then needed to call Davis to come in to meet them. When he arrived, he wouldn’t weigh in. (Hmm.)
Davis is a first-round pick, but there have been some concerns raised previously about his weight fluctuations and maturity. Wednesday’s adventures can’t help his case.
March 10th, 2010 at 6:29 pm
Norco – I’m still heart broken too. I just can’t understand how someone can trade away a successful Head Coach like that? Who does that? We had just a good thing going. If we had picked up and been successful over these last years, I don’t think it would have been such a big deal but the fall has been so hard.

Monte Poole’s Bay Area FA follies article
http://www.insidebayarea.com/ci_14644131?source=most_viewed#article_comments
“(Kwame Harris) This makes the list mostly because of the arrogance the Raiders displayed by implying the 49ers — Harris’ previous employer — had failed the player. Davis overpaid to discover what everybody else knew, that Kwame is a nice guy and a mediocre lineman.”
=======================
The 6-7, 322 lber was part of a line that saw Frank Gore rush for 2,797 yds in 2006-2007. It was felt Harris suffered when SF switched from a ZBS and Oakland sumised a return might to it may pay dividends. It did not.
============================
No. 1: OK, it’s our man Javon, whose six-year, $55 million deal ($16 mil guaranteed) in 2008 is one for the ages.
“The signing seemed desperate from the start and never made sense. Even Walker, who tried to ask for his release, knew he was stealing money from the boss.
The release of Walker this week suggests the boss finally came to grips with the fact he had victimized himself.”
============================
No doubt Davis signed off. He is the one is charge, but this, Wilson and DeAngelo Hall were all Lane Kiffin moves.
March 10th, 2010 at 6:31 pm
Dear God…Anthony Davis will be a Raider.

I dont want a successor,..I want Gruden back…period.
March 10th, 2010 at 6:33 pm
I think LJ is kind of interesting — as long as he doesn’t get Javon Walker/Ted Danson type money.
I know he’s been pretty bad the last few seasons. However, KC and their o-line was really atrocious. He’s gotta know he’s another bad season away from being gone for good in this league. I’ve always felt that lack of motivation is LJ’s biggest problem. If he’s motivated to keep his career alive he could be a decent addition.
I have followed his career pretty closely. I rode Priest Holmes and LJ to a string of fantasy league championships in the early/mid ’00s. He’s pretty similar to Michael Bush but a little more fluid as a runner and a little faster at top speed as well. Last couple of years he’s looked hesitant in his runs, but a bad o-line can do that to a guy. Wanted no part of him in my league last year, but for some reason I just have this gut feeling that he could rebound for another season or two. A modest contract and he’d be a guy with some upside and little risk.

I think Bruce Campbell is very much the odds on favorite for the pick at No. 8. Factoring Suh, McCoy, Okung and Berry are virtual locks to be off the board in the top 7, the way I see it:
Bruce Campbell: 5:3
Trent Williams: 3:1
Anthony Davis: 4:1
Brian Bulaga: 4:1
Derrick Morgan: 5:1
Jason Paul Pierre: 5:1

Jon Gruden is a human being, and has his flaws like everybody else. I loved Chuckie when he was in Oakland. He had the raiders knocking on the door of a championship. He was charismatic. He was cool. Unfortunately, he finally won in Tampa. However, his teams were veteran laden. Both of them. He didn’t draft well, or develop young players particularly well. The bottom line is he left not one but two franchises old and in shambles.

I agree. Campbell is no slam dunk. There’s bust potential there. However, I think with some good coaching this kid could be a beast and shouldn’t be scoffed at.
In a pure physical sense he could be the most impressive o-lineman specimen to come out since Tony Mandarich. Of course, Mandarich was a bust but that’s mostly attributed to the fact that he was the product of steroids — which he could no longer be under the NFL’s more rigorous testing — and failed largely because he was also a bit of a screwup who didn’t give a F–k. I’ve heard no such fears about Campbell who flashes some nice actual playing abilities on tape to go with his unheard of raw size/athleticism (6-6, 315, 36 inch arms, about 35 reps on the bench, 4.8 speed).
March 10th, 2010 at 8:22 pm
263. Campbell’s a project. We need help NOW.
He’s only started 17 college level games.
Most have him going in the late 1st maybe to Cowboys at 27.
Mayock’s got him tied for 5th best Tackle, but theri is a need and teams may reach.
And speaking of health issues in the draft, McClains not the only one.
Campbell has…
“If there is a negative Campbell has besides experience, it’s a condition called Arnold-Chiari, which healthline.com describes as “a rare genetic disorder” where “some parts of the brain are formed abnormally.” Campbell said he had surgery in high school to relieve the problem and that doctors at the combine cleared him to play, but it could be the type of condition that might affect his draft status.” – Jan Hubbard, Fort Worth Star Telegram

How can a guy with little to no evidence of great/elite play ON THE FIELD be considered an equivalent to a lottery pick? The measurables only show his athleticism, which is extraordinary. But shouldn’t a top 10 pick be as close to a sure thing as u can get? I dont want Campbell @ 8; if he’s there in the 2nd, then take him. Bulaga looks like he might be a winner @ 8 or Williams. No Campbell @ 8!
March 10th, 2010 at 8:36 pm
L to R – Murphy, DMac (slot WR), Campbell, Gallery, New Guy, Walker/new guy, Henderson, Miller, Schillins and Bush & a QB in the backfield. That lineup has possibilities. Everything when it’s all said and done depends on that QB position. Damn, that really is our main loose end.

If Al is going to make another “measurables driven” pick, let it be OT Bruce Campbell. Better that than another CB or safety. He has to know that we absolutely must have new BIG UGLIES – a lot of them.

I don’t get where all the praise for Mitchell comes from. There’s a ton of bloggers who think he was good last year and will be great in the future.
I don’t see it.
He had 16 tackles last year (Tony Stewart had 17) and 1 1/2 sacks. 0 Ints and 0 PD’s.
He got burned in coverage and they used him mostly as a LB in passing downs, or an in the box safety on short yardage.
He stood up for his team mates in scrap, but he’s really just an undersized LB. I doubt he will ever pan out to be a full-time safety.

MOCK DRAFT:
1. Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland
2. Vladimir Ducasse, OT, UMass
3. Navorro Bowman, LB, Penn State
3. Mike Neal, DT, Purdue
4. Ben Tate, RB, Auburn
5. *RFA Troy Smith, QB, Ravens
5. Seyi Ajirotutu, WR, Fresno State
7. John Conner, FB, Kentucky
March 10th, 2010 at 9:12 pm
That, IMO, would be a sick draft. Could be a little optimistic since several of those guys are rising up analysts’ boards and could very well elevate out of the range I have us taking them in though.
March 10th, 2010 at 9:12 pm
He looked good when he was attacking the line-of-scrimmage, but bad when he had to make plays in the secondary.
Think back to the times where he made a big play. It was always when the play was in front of him.
I can’t recall him making a play when the ball was in the air and he had to adjust. Or when he had to backpedal in coverage.
I think he can fill a role, but I don’t think it will be as a full time safety.

So far this off-season aint selling any tickets.
March 10th, 2010 at 9:19 pm
They’d have the tallest O-line ever.
If they stick with the ZBS, then I don’t think they would put Ducasse at guard. They might go with a quicker, legit guard instead.
For my money I think Trent Williams is the better choice at 8.
March 10th, 2010 at 9:20 pm
I went to youtube to view campbell,..(I wouldnt consider clicking on a link from here),….if hes picked at 8 Im ok with it,..looks like a bad mo fo…I like the pick…will protect the little Polock very well. Print that.
March 10th, 2010 at 9:23 pm
If they took Campbell I wouldn’t throw anything at my TV. He’s a typical Davis athlete, but if he sukked, they could at least move him inside like Gallery. It wouldn’t be a total waste like others.
If they take Taylor Mays, I’m off to Best Buy for a new big screen.
March 10th, 2010 at 9:40 pm
Bruce Campbell is another Al Davis prospect with very little college experience.
March 10th, 2010 at 9:46 pm
With Campbell, it’s not the lack of experience that bothers me.
He seems to be top heavy. He’s got the massive shoulders and arms. He needs to be thicker in the legs to keep his balance. The best O-linemen are just built that way.
March 10th, 2010 at 9:52 pm
Looks like he should be a DE.
March 10th, 2010 at 9:53 pm
Exactly.
March 10th, 2010 at 9:54 pm

March 10th, 2010 at 9:56 pm
Maybe Al will draft Campbell then spin him around to play DE. He usually tries to get one player to switch positions per draft. Maybe this year it will be Campbell.
March 10th, 2010 at 9:56 pm
That’s exactly what the Raiders need, a Raw LT drafted at #8. A player with 17 career starts.

March 10th, 2010 at 10:38 pm
Please Al, draft a couple of offensive tackles.
Please!
March 10th, 2010 at 10:38 pm
What would it take to trade up to the #2 pick assuming the #1 pick is NOT Suh? How about our #8 first plus #3B and 5B picks. Would that get it done?
March 10th, 2010 at 10:49 pm
Apparently the Lions want to move out of the number 2 spot, so it would be possible to get that pick.
You can google a draft value chart which shows how much each pick is worth in terms of points.
Moving up to 2 from 8 would be very costly though. More than it’s worth.
March 10th, 2010 at 10:54 pm
Nah, according to trade value chart, the second overall pick is worth 2,600 pts, our 8th overall pick is worth 1,400. We would need to give up our first, second and 2 thirds to go that high. Of course this is not necessary if a team just wants a 1st and 2nd.
March 10th, 2010 at 11:00 pm
The value chart is a nice guide but it still really depends on the players involved. Having a franchise QB available would certainly drive up the price.
I can’t see Al using a value guide to help him make his decisions though.

2010 Oakland Raiders Mock Draft
1. Bruce Campbell, OT, Maryland
Campbell is a good sized left tackle prospect that is a bit ahead of the curve, technique wise, over most underclass linemen. He is quick to set the edge and does a good job of jamming opponents with heavy hands and can be quick to get a refit when the pass rusher slaps his hands away. He has struggled with durability in that he has yet to play in every game during a collegiate season and will need to be gone over with a fine toothed comb by team doctors. He gets a bit lazy with his techniques and can be late to recognize or react to new situations but his physical talents are undeniable and he should be quick to come off some team’s draft board.
2. Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida
Spikes is a big, strong physical defender that missed some time in 2009 after being suspended for a game due to an on the field incident early in the season. Spikes is best attacking the line of scrimmage and is a solid tackler in the open field. He uses his hands well to ward off blockers and leverage the ball and understands angles and run fits in the Gators defense. He is an instinctive player that is best versus the run but appears to have limitations in coverage. Spikes is quicker than fast and reacts quickly as plays develop but will need lots of technique work (especially defending the pass) at the next level. Spikes has excellent blood lines and is a good football player that brings attitude and leadership to the linebacker position.
3. Chris Cook, CB, Virginia
Cook has excellent size and strength for the position. He lacks great burst and pure speed to play out on an island in man coverage but is versatile enough to be effective as a rolled up defender or move inside to the safety position. Cook uses his hands well to re-route receivers off the line of scrimmage. He doesn’t have the lateral agility and quickness to stay in a top receiver’s hip pocket and he may be a liability in some schemes. Cook is a solid run support defender and an active player versus both the run and pass. Cook has great instincts and feel for route progression to make plays on the ball. His size, toughness and versatility makes him a valued commodity in this year’s draft.
3. Carlton Mitchell, WR, South Florida
Mitchell brings a rare combination of size and speed to this draft. He could definitely use another year in college but will be attractive to teams that are looking for a vertical passing attack thanks to his downfield speed and size. He shows a good burst coming out of his speed cuts but will chop down too much and waste steps on hard cuts for underneath routes. He has huge hands and can catch the ball in one hand at times but will try to catch too many passes in his body when he can. He is willing to go across the middle and catch the ball in traffic and is a physical blocker on the perimeter.
4. Brandon Carter, OG, Texas Tech
Carter is a three-year starter at guard for the Red Raiders and has played a lot of football over the years. He will show some nastiness in his blocks but sometimes lets it get personal and has been known to get flagged for penalties at inopportune times. He is a mauler and a brawler as a blocker that can smother opponents once he gets his hands on them but will struggle when reacting to movement or when in space. Carter is probably too limited, athletically, to be a top line starter in the NFL but could find a niche as a backup that could start in a pinch.
5. A.J. Edds, OLB, Iowa
Edds has been a productive three year starter for the Hawkeye defense. He wins with intelligence, toughness, instincts and technique rather than elite athleticism. Edds has decent range in pursuit and is aggressive to the pile. He is effective leveraging tight ends but needs added strength and power to set the edge versus larger offensive lineman. Edds needs to react quicker as route progressions unfold but has enough athleticism and instincts to be an effective zone coverage defender. He may be a liability in man schemes versus athletic tight ends and backs. Edds is a reliable open field tackler but not explosive on contact. Edds is a good football player that will likely contribute on special teams as well as giving valuable depth in his rookie season.
7. Jeff Owens, DT, Georgia
Owens is coming off a solid 2009 season after missing all but one game in 2008 with a knee injury. Owens is a short, squatty built but strong interior defender that is more of a run stopper than pass rusher. He can anchor well when he keeps his pads down but needs to improve his hand use to disengage quicker to the ball. Owens needs an expanded pass rush package to be effective at the next level but has the natural power to push the pocket. Owens is a tough hard-nosed lineman that has some athletic limitations but his intangibles (motor, leadership qualities) gives him a great chance to contribute in his rookie season.

I bet he will still go first round sometime. San Diego will probably grab him if they can’t get spiller.
March 11th, 2010 at 7:21 am
Mario thats a decent mock, but I dont think we need to draft another WR this year (Im not saying what we have is special by any means) and I think we HAVE to get a FB in the 7th. Draft John Conner… the future depends on it!

WALK NAKED IN AMERICA DAY
Don’t forget to mark your calendars.
As you may already know, it is a sin for a Musl1m males to see any woman other than his wife naked and if he does, he must commit suicide . So next Saturday at 1 PM Eastern Time, all American women are asked to walk out of their house completely naked to help weed out any neighborhood terrorists.
Circling your block for one hour is recommended for this anti-terrorist effort.
All patriotic men are to position themselves in lawn chairs in front of their houses to demonstrate their support for the women and to prove that they are not Musl1m terrorist sympathizers. Since Isl@m also does not approve of alcohol, a cold 6-pack at your side is further proof of your patriotism.
The American government appreciates your efforts to root out terrorists and applauds your participation in this anti-terrorist activity.
God bless America !
P.S.. It is your patriotic duty to inform others. If you don’t send to at least 1 person, you’re a terrorist-sympathizing, lily-livered coward and are possibly aiding and abetting terrorists.

Adam Shefter reports, Raiders NT Gerard Warren is due a $5.925 million roster bonus by March 14.
Warren is coming off a poor season as a run defender and turns 32 this summer. With Al Davis in cost-cutting mode of late, Warren’s time with the Raiders appears to be up.
March 11th, 2010 at 9:06 am

Warren is a joke! We gave him and TK 100 Mil in contracts. I rather see that money spent last year on Big Albert.
We gave D Hall a 70 mil contract, and he collected 8 mil in 8 games. we could have signed peppers or Dansby this season.

DMAC: if some team trades a 2nd rounder to get Thomas Howard I’d take a long hard look at Keith Bullock to fill the SSLB spot.
I think the Raiders may try to re-sign Greg Ellis at a cheaper cost before training camp too.
Instead of $2.5 million we may get him for $1 million. Teams weren’t beating down his door last year in FA. I doubt they’d do it this year when he’s just another year older (like Terrell Owens).
I’d rather have Ellis than Richardson or Gunheim!
and I’d rather have Bullock than Alston or Williams!

March 11th, 2010 at 9:50 am
It’s gotta be Trent Williams over Bruce Campbell.
Williams started on the left and right side. He has three years of starting. He played against better competition.
Look at the combine results. Campbell ran a slightly fatser 40, but Williams was faster in all the other positional drills. He has quicker feet and is more agile than Campbell. If Campbell didn’t come out this year, everyone would be talking about how athletic Williams was.
Most importantly he is thicker in the legs. Campbell has huge shoulders and upper body which makes him top heavy and easier to throw off balance. Williams has a lower center of balance, allowing him to set against bull rushers in the passing game. He is also more agile, allowing him to redirect quicker against speed rushers.
There are the reasons why Williams would be a better pick at 8. He has played both sides, he’s just as athletic, and he has a body type more suitable for the position. So don’t be disappointed if they call out Williams name first at the draft. In fact, don’t be surprised if they call out Williams’ name before the Raiders even get to select.

I like the thought of havign Trevor Scott rushing the passer on 3rd & long or other obvious passing downs. But I’d leave him at WLB and have him rush from there. Morrison is much better in pass defense than Ricky Brown. He’s got the speed as long as Marshall doesn’t go into prevent mode and put the defense on their heels. Shaughnessy/Kelly/Bryant/Seymour is good pressure from the front 4. then you got Scott coming off the edge? SACK!!!

Cable’s problem is that he can’t stand up to Al Davis. Randy Hanson isn’t the reason we’re losing. Cable needs to attack Al Davis and threaten to kill him.
March 11th, 2010 at 10:31 am
There is no reason to shift to a 3-4. The best run defense’s in the league run a 4-3. I am totally on board with you RMR… it is silly to even consider switching to a 3-4. Scheme is not the problem, personal is. If we were floundering because we had a bunch of 3-4 guys trying to play a 4-3 I would be on board. Over pursuit and inability to shed blocks are not scheme problems
March 11th, 2010 at 10:32 am
Build the lines, front 7 on defense (need a few more run stoppers), a quarterback, a real head coach, a real coaching staff…These are all vital areas where we’re lacking right now, and no back or receiver is going to suffice for it, no matter how talented.

Al’s going with who he thinks is the best player available. If the DT’s avail aren’t better than Kelly and Warren in his eyes he won’t get em. If the T avail aren’t better than Henderson in his eyes he’s not drafting a RT w/ first pick. If Suh, Mccoy, Okung, Williams, or Bradford are there he’ll get em. Neither will likely be there so he’ll turn his attention to Berry or Pierre
March 11th, 2010 at 10:46 am

March 11th, 2010 at 10:48 am
Coaches are the problems. We have a no name as head coach who was under a criminal investigation last season. He improved the team by absolutely zero games from last year. Duece Duece, you’re in denial. I know you want to see Al succeed but you have to be realistic. It’s not going to happen until he hires a real coach or GM and settles down.

March 11th, 2010 at 10:57 am
Tom Cable…took a team from 5-11 to 5-11. That’s a 0% improvement, for those keeping score. Was under a criminal investigation last season, is now facing a civil suit. This is a team that’s been marred by chaos in recent years, heck, for a decade, if you listen to former players, and now we have a coach being sued for physical assault. He’ll probably have to leave practice to make court appearances. Nice. Nothing chaotic about that. “Alright, guys, one more and we’ll wrap it up for the day. I have a court appearance”. This is the NFL. Imagine Payton or Whisenhunt or Childress having to leave a bunch of practices early to meet with a lawyer because they were being sued for attacking someone? Just to give you an idea of how chaotic our situation is. Oh, did I mention Cable improved the team by absolutely zero wins from the previous season?

Jon Gruden was a no name coach, so was John Madden when Al hired him. I’m not saying Cable is either of these two great coaches. I don’t think the fact that he is a no name makes him a bad coach. I remember when Fassel took the play calling duties from Sean Payton. Does that mean he is a bad coach?
March 11th, 2010 at 10:59 am
The best assistant coaches? ha ha!! I’d love to see some examples to make your case, that our assistant coaches are “some of the best”. ha ha ha ha! Start with Jim Marshall. Compare and contrast him with other defensive coordinators around the league. Go ahead and include his defensive stats from last year. I need a laugh.

You can honestly say we were right there in 3 or 4 games and Cable blew it? He was holding, or took a sack, or dropped a ball, or missed the tackle?
March 11th, 2010 at 11:00 am
Jon Gruden was not a no name coach. Several teams were interested in him. Stop lying, Ghost.

Lets see the list of all the teams that we’re interested in young Jon Gruden?
March 11th, 2010 at 11:07 am
There are more pressing issues on the table.
Like how long as Kelli been a racist scumbag?
How many handles Oakglen/Seymour is currently posting as?
If winning a bingo championship is everything Lil Beeech thought it would be?
If Nnamdi still has nightmares about Cable “setting up JR..HE DID…HE DIIIIIIDDDDDD!!!!!”?
If TJ ever admits the closest he’s ever come to any ’scouts/front office’ is when he empties the parking lot dumpsters of recyclables?
If MR ever admits that jersey hidden way down in the bottom drawer, under all the comic books, is really a Russell jersey, extra small?
If LA to the Bay honestly expects everyone who doesn’t have mad love for Al is going to become a SD fan?
If Debo really believes that everyone doesn’t know he’s Oakglen/seymour?
On that note, if Oakglen/Seymour is going to bring back Captain Black for a guest appearance?
If 4eva is going to ever post another shopping list of the day?
If Kell is ever going to admit that his silly page on Kane and Companies web site is an embarrassment to all kindergarten level web designers?
As well, that his wife isn’t “surveying” that she’s standing there, holding Kell’s purse, staring blankly?
If Oakglen/Seymour going to tell all how he got a bank to loan an unemployed student money to buy a house, that his answer of “how do you know I’m not a rock star at 18″ is suspect, at best?
Does Norco Bobbo REALLY take everything he says he does, or is it another dangled carrot, designed to solicit a response/reaction?
Does Bree the Flea really soil himself at the mere mention of…gasp…*the MAFIA*??..and is he really “busy” or is he banned, yet again??
These..and so many more, are the pressing issues…
Ok..maybe they’re not…but they could be

Exactly. Who did put that player in the game? Show me your proof it was Cable. Until then….?

March 11th, 2010 at 11:31 am
Al is one of the people to blame. Obviously Al’s the only one who can fire Cable, and he’s certainly responsible for that. You said the coaches aren’t the problem. Now you’re saying the coaches have no say as to who goes into the lineup? That’s sounds like a problem to me. A coach being a spineless puppet is a problem.
March 11th, 2010 at 11:31 am
He was a no name coach. And I said it again. He wasn’t in line for one of the Head coaching jobs.
March 11th, 2010 at 11:32 am
Ghost, you said Gruden was a “no name”. You lied. And those articles are proof of it. His “name” is all over them, and the articles predate Gruden’s hiring in Oakland.
March 11th, 2010 at 11:34 am
He was not a no name coach, moron. He was a primary head coaching candidate in ‘96 and ‘97. That was just the first page I searched. Just what is your definition of a “no name coach”?

March 11th, 2010 at 11:36 am
No name, no name, no name.
March 11th, 2010 at 11:36 am
Ghost, why do you lie about Gruden being a “no name”? Is it to give the impression that Al can spot coaching talent? With Madden, you have a case. But according to Madden’s side of the story, his ambition is just as much to credit for it. Al wanted someone to step up in Rauch’s place, and Madden did. Al didn’t exactly go out and find Madden. He already worked for the team and showed a level of enthusiasm the other assistants didn’t have. Al was likely to hire any other no name. Madden’s ambition is what made him stand out, not Al’s keen eye for talent. Al’s a fraud, and you’re a liar.

And the coaches arent the problem. I didnt say they didnt have say as to who goes in. Read what I typed. I said ‘who’ makes that decision…..as in Who? You dont know…I dont know who makes that decision…It could be a mix of both the owner and coaches..

What are head coaching credentials, idiot? Everyone has to start somewhere. Jon Gruden was a successful and sought after offensive coordinator, who was mentioned several times for head coaching jobs, before he was ever interviewed by Davis. Cable was an offensive line coach, nothing more, right up until we hired him. You are clueless. Your desperation to make Al look smart is making you look like a dumbass. I’d let it go.

Of course, then he backpedals and tries to say, “no name coach”, which isn’t true, either. Gruden was all over the news after the ‘96 season as well as the ‘97 season. Al FOUND Gruden. It is an inescapable fact. He was a no name nobody, and left the Raiders as a vastly overrated coach who promptly began driving the Bucs into a ditch. He will never win anything with his own team – he needs a good GM/owner. He proved that in Tampa. Read the articles if you need to.
March 11th, 2010 at 11:49 am
I posted articles that prove he was sought after before he came here. Why do I need to watch a video from when he was hired here? Duece, Ghost to the Post said that Gruden was a “no name”. If he’d merely said that nobody hired him before coming here, this argument would be over. What I’m disputing is his claim that Gruden was a “no name”, along the lines of Tom Cable. That was b.s., and that’s what I’m taking him to task for. It looks like Bo wants to get humiliated too. He’s another glutton for punishment. More google news searches on the way. Hang tight, liars.

March 11th, 2010 at 11:54 am
I thought Gruden wasn’t that great of a gameday manager. Never wowed me as a great strategist. Callahan had a more creative offense the year after Gruden left.
But his teams have always been prepared to play on Sunday, week in and week out. It was a breath of fresh air. It took Callahan about 30 games once Jon left for the staleness of the Raider organization to finally overtake him.
OK, now I’m gone…..

Bo, I never said any team wanted him as a HC before Al Davis. I was disputing the claim that he’s a “no name”, as you’ve just said, as well. How would you define no name? I’ve got hundreds of pages coming back on google news searches pre 1998, almost all of the articles having headlines indicating that Gruden was considered for head coaching positions. So, just what is your definition of a no name?

Do you think Gruden was a no name before coming to Oakland, Richochet? If so ,can I just get your definition as to what a “no name” is, in your view? These articles aren’t just recognizing him as an offensive coordinator. And, I agree with you. You can google any OC and get a ton of results. But a ton of results talking about him being a sought after HC candidate?

Technically Gruden became a household name after being promoted, obviously.
But yeah, around the NFL Gruden was well known, and was a top OC..don’t think anyone can dispute that.
Household name? of course not..but he wasn’t a hidden commodity that Al “found”.
Cable? He’s a tree stump. Will always be one. After he’s canned, he has zero chance of any team EVER wanting him as a leader..because he’s not one. He’s a puppet, which is exactly what Al wanted.

March 11th, 2010 at 12:19 pm
I didn’t say you were wrong about the Gruden no name argument. I am aware he was a “hot commodity” in the NFL prior to becoming our head coach. I agree with Richochet on this one though, he was NOT a household name before becoming our coach.
March 11th, 2010 at 12:20 pm
That’s a misunderstanding, not being wrong. Ghost to the post clearly said Gruden was a no name. I merely responded to a point I thought you were trying to make. If you want an apology for it, here it is, sweetie. It wasn’t that big of a deal. Besides, anyone who even uses the word “best” alongside our coaches in any context is asking for it. And, I don’t see where this staff is better than staffs from the past. We haven’t had a competent staff since nearly a decade ago. I don’t care how much better the lame staffs are than each other.

March 11th, 2010 at 12:26 pm
Ghost to the post tried to make the point that Al DAvis has had success in the past with no names, and tried to list Madden, Gruden, and now Cable as those no names.
Cable he’s obviously right about. He is a no name.
Gruden was NOT a no name. He was considered for HC jobs before coming to Oakland. That may not make him a household name, but it certainly lifts him from the “no name” status.
John Madden stepped up when Davis offered the HC position to anyone who basically wanted it after Rauch left. This is in the NFL Films History of the Oakland Raiders DVD. I can find out exactly what time of the film it happens if you want me to. Davis didn’t exactly go out and “find” Madden. He just needed a replacement for Rauch, offered the job to his current staff, and Madden was the most determined. That’s not finding someone.
Truth be told, the only “no name” Al Davis ever really founded is Tom CAble. And you can see the results. Al Davis has only succeeded in the past by doing things other people’s way.
March 11th, 2010 at 12:28 pm

Kind of tough to lay the blame for not making decisions on someone who is not given the authority to make decisions.
Al overrules everyone, by his own admission.
Turner benches Collins? Al: “He doesn’t make those decisions, I do”
Kiffin can’s Ryan? Al: “He doesn’t fire assts. Only I do.”
Cable? I don’t know of a decision he’s made that Al hasn’t ok’ed. he even admitted he got Al’s permission to start Grad after benching JR.
Javon Walker sitting? And Cable’s lame excuse? Obviously was Al.
that said, IMO, Cable isn’t the brightest bulb in the drawer, and doubtfully could make the right decision if all arrows pointed to it. Look at his play calling for evidence of someone lost..his lack of emotion on the sidelines (oh…my bad…EXCEPT WHEN HE’S BEING MIC’ED) his inability to motivate players to do above what’s expected…he’s a train wreck, to be quite honest.
and Al loves it.

The bleacher reports mock was good….but most likely a pipe dream when it comes to Al Davis.
Swapping 1st round picks with G-Men would be good then getting Usi to be that pass rushing RDE this team needs.
They can then get their ANY OT who is there with the G-Men 1st Rounder. Campbell might still be there along possibly Anthony Davis, Trent Williams or Charles Brown.
Then they can get a DT like Lamar Houston, Cam Thomas or Cody in Round 2….then go LB and a KR/slot WR like Ford in Round 3.
Or maybe even get the all everything LB SPOON with the G-Mens pick.
McClains stock seems to be falling a bit. He had a non existent combine and he was barely existent at his pro day.

Raiders release Gerard Warren
Posted by Michael David Smith on March 11, 2010 3:52 PM ET
The Oakland Raiders have released defensive tackle Gerard Warren, making the nine-year veteran an unrestricted free agent.
Warren, who had a roster bonus due on March 16, was widely expected to be released, and Michael Lombardi of NFL Network and NFP reported on Twitter that it became official today.
Although Warren has started all 32 games in the last two seasons for the Raiders and still occasionally shows flashes of the athleticism that made him the third overall pick in the 2001 NFL draft, he’s 31 years old and not likely to get any big-money offers in free agency.
Warren had a career-low two sacks in 2009.

Osi is a pass rusher. He’s not great against the run. The Raiders brought in Ellis, Seymour and Shaugnessy to bulk up against the run. I can’t see them returning to old form and grabbing another Derrick Burgess type.
If anything, they’ll add more bulk to the D-line.
