Even Walker couldn’t believe his good fortune

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, March 13th, 2010 at 12:01 am in Oakland Raiders.

Turns out the local and national media weren’t the only ones surprised when Al Davis opened his checkbook for Javon Walker in 2008.

“It was a surprise to me,” Walker told the NFL Network. “But, you know, like any human, if somebody offers you something good, I wasn’t going to say no. … Really, football has never been about the money to me, but what the Raiders offered, it’s not like I’m going to turn it down and say, ‘Hey, you know, I don’t think I deserve this.’ I was like ‘OK, maybe I can be a part of the puzzle to make this organization go again.’ ”

Exactly how much money Walker received for his 15 receptions, only he and his agents know for sure. The Raiders say the stopped payment after $14 million.

Which ought to make “Commitment to Excellence” award winner Justin Fargas feel great tonight at a banquet in his honor after the he was released before the Raiders had to pay a $1.7 million bonus.

Walker isn’t the only reason the Raiders have backed off in terms of free agency, but he’s the best one.

The free agent signing of Walker has recently been judged as perhaps the worst free agent signing in NFL history.

I’m not sure the DeAngelo Hall trade wasn’t worse, considering the Raiders also lost second- and fifth-round draft picks in the deal.

Does JBest have the violent on-field attitude necessary to be a successful RB in the NFL? You know, the one Fargas had/has. Better yet, does he have the talent/attitude combination to let him EXCEL at this level?

One guy with attitude — who’s likely to keep it channeled appropriately as he’s maturing — is LaGarrette Blount. He may be a lot less expensive than JBest, and have the same potential for success in the NFL.

This year’s Draft may be as fluid as we remember… teams have so many needs, and the Draft is deep. Hopefully the action will live up to the prime-time billing.

  • HayesDaze37

My Draft priorities today, pending FA signings and/or trades:

Rd 1 – ILB (or OL. McClain in my book, though)
Rd 2 – OL (or ILB)
    Rd 3 – D-Line
Next 3 picks, best player available: RB/DB/OL/DL

Mario Henderson can get the job done…the bigger question is whether or not Robert Gallery will be able to help him do it. Gallery’s back makes it imperative the Raiders get new blood on the O-line.

  • DKnight007

If the the signings and throwing away of money to Walker and Hall and the way the old man handled the draft last year doesn’t prove to you demon Al worshippers that the old looney man hasn’t LOST it….then your LOST yourselves! LOL

  • DKnight007

Just curious….but how many of you here have called Raider headquarters and asked to be transferred to Herrera or Trasks voice mail to vent and complain about the way things are being run and the way the franchise is going down the tubes??

    How many of you?

  • DKnight007

Al Davis and and his decision making are freakin LAME!

  • Mistabr0wn

Even worse than paying Walker all that cash was to bench him when he was ready to play..

Oh wait we had JLH & DHB tearing up the NFL, and tj’s FAVORITE WR “Nick Miller the DB Killer” so playing Walker just wasnt necessary.

    Ok I got it..

  • DKnight007

Sooooo whats up with the predictable white media giving Big Rapist Ben a pass and not being all over him like they would if it was a minority like McNabb, Kobe, Lebron or even Sanchez??

    Hmmm….typical and predictable.

Can’t wait for one of you morons to say the typical dumb response of “stop playing the race card”.

News break: Racism still exists in this country sadly….accept it, instead of denying it and turning a blind eye.

Hey DK007 — Given the fact that Al’s cutting his losses with some of his bad choices…doesn’t that show he’s at least figured out SOMETHING? After all, he could just have kept tham on the roster (and of course, be hammered for it).

WHO is the FA signing/savior that Al should’ve signed already? Which of the cuts this off-season have been bad cuts?

Seems to me like…the only way to correct mistakes is to start somewhere. Considering the dust hasn’t settled this off-season…methinks Al and the Raiders have done a fine job so far.

Al’s not done making good moves…even if his haters refuse to acknowledge them when he makes them. Will he make some “bad” moves this year? Most likely. Will be be trying to improve HIS team? Definitely.

Al has on his resume the WORST OFFSEASON FA SIGNING ever, with his 270 million thrown at 5 players. That alone will never be surpassed. The money thrown at Wilson, Hall, Kelly, Walker, and Kwame will never be surpassed as the dumbest head up ass signings in one setting.

Al’s only issue in the draft has been his first-rounders.

Guys like Scott, Murphy, Miller and Branch, might be the most productive players to come out of their respective rounds in that year.

I don’t blame him for the picking of a QB, RB and WR, that’s what the best teams are doing. He just picked the wrong guys.

  • HayesDaze37

RickyLake shows just how little she knows about football when she tries to discuss it. No wonder there’s so much hatred saved up in there.

And…using 5 guys recently cut/replaced to show that Al ISN’T learning his lessons, cutting losses and moving on from them, is a great way to lose one’s own argument.

Way to go RickyLake…proving once again that the less-than-average intellect only goes so far before breaking down and arguing with itself.

You go, RickyLake…chase that smelly tail, girl.

  • HayesDaze37

MMitchell might just be a great DB, no matter how “raw” some people say he is. Tyvon Branch looks like the real deal.

No logical or objective viewer who saw those two guys play last year could dispute their improved play or potential. The Raiders Safety position should be in good hands for the next 4 years or so. Good GM-ing, that!

Well? Which was THE DUMBER MOVE?
8 MILLION PAID for 8 games played, or signing him PERIOD? lol..and to you THAT MADE SENSE?

Gabril Wilson’s 50 million contract was wise because after one year he was released BECAUSE HE DARED TO QUESTION AL’S RELEASING OF HALL? Even though Wilson led the team in tackles?

Javon Walker to a 55 million deal, with 16 million GUARANTEED..AND THEN AL SITS HIM?
Are you a moron full time, or is this a part time gig?

Signing Kwame Harris to a 6 million deal, WHEN HE LED THE LEAGUE IN PENALTIES, AND SACKS ALLOWED?
To YOU that’s a good signing? Oh..wait..that’s ok, because a YEAR LATER he was released?
HE SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN SIGNED, MORON.
    You’re a moron.

Signing Kelly for 55 mil when the previous year, when he went on IR, the defense actually IMPROVED from giving up 5.3 ypc to 4.8 with him out?

I think MM when used right, can be pretty effective. I agree that he is one of our if not THE best blitzer on our team. I realize that is not saying much when considering the others, but he was pretty effective at it.

I always compare the potential of MM to Carnell Lake from the Steelers in the 90′s. Lake lost a step as a DB, so he was pretty much a blitzing nickle guy and had like 10 sacks one year and got some MVP votes.

Obviously, MM has a long way to go to get to that point, but even a poor man’s version of that would be very, very useful.

When used right is the key for all those guys ….

IMO, Hue Jackson and his scheme are the key to the offense. If it is more vanilla stuff we’ve seen for the past few years, then I just don’t think we have the Oline to pull it off.

But if we can get some creativity to get guys in space or matched up to beat LBs and S, then I think we will see these young guys differently. Misdirection, shorter routes, and a lot of running the ball.

    Jhill,

Hue will drum up a little more creativity. I mean how couldn’t he?

The key to the offense will be Darren. You know I am a huge critic, but I liked Jerry’s Ronnie Harmon analogy.

That guy has a headache every 3rd and 6. He could take the occasional draw, went out into short patterns and caught every ball thrown his way. You can line him up in different formations and create mismatches, not only for himself but for others as teams D had to adjust when he went in motion and such.

Darren could be used in a similar-type role and be effective. As effective, I doubt it, but we need guys to move the chains on 3rd down. That was our achillies heel, IMO.

  • jhill

As long as Stan Routt getting that tender means he is starting on the outside, I pretty much agree with every move we made this offseason.

  • jhill

Agree with using DMAC as a “weapon” instead of a traditional RB.

  • HayesDaze37

Before I go…I defy RickyLake to give me ONE move, one player, one decisive trade that Al should’ve made this year (besides the catatonic “replace himself”) that would’ve been better than the moves he’s made SO FAR.

RickyLake has NO answer…just whining and complaining about a team she must be addicted to, or she wouldn’t be in here whining about it every day. Oh wait…it’s NOT about the Raiders or Al Davis at all…it’s all about getting attention in here.

Dealing with the truth takes facing the truth, RickyLake — we all know you don’t really care either way about the team or its owner…you just need the attention in here to pump-up your miserable self-worth, as little as it is.

Try as you might, you miserable smelly critter… Can’t spoil MY enthusiasm for the great Raiders legacy, or their great future.

Chase that tail, Ricky girl, chase that smelly tail.

Sorry, not with you on this one.

First off, the salary given was way out of whack. It is peanuts compared to the disasters of Javon, Meangelo and TK, but still, overpaying is overpaying.

Second, I just don’t see it with him. Maybe he turns it around big-time this year, and proves me wrong. I hope so. But his football instincts are terrible at times. I’ve watched replays of when he gets flagged, and he will have GREAT coverage on a guy, than just grab the WR by his shoulderpads for no reason. BEEEEP!!! Illegal contact #26, 5 yards, automatic first-down.

I’m afraid that will replace the weekly Cornell Green false start we all despised.

More importantly, Kelli…who was business today?

I stop in early..you’re on here.
I leave..come back hours later, you’re STILL on here..

Leave again..and stop in briefly now..and YOU’RE STILL ON HERE.

wack job posts dozens of trolls during the course of the day and then calls others out for being here all day. Is this the epitome of hypocrite or is he just a delusional nut case? I think it is both actually.

Al Davis the GM is doing a good job so far. Of course, a final grade can’t be assigned until we see what happens after the draft and then of course during the season.

I agree 100,000% with the decisions to cut Fargas, Warren, Walker, Green….those were moves that were 1 to 2 years overdue.

Now, as I have said repeatedly, let’s see if Fargas or Warren land new positions in the NFL.

The Bills signing Green defies logic to me. Regardless, Green is a backup tackle.

Next moves that Davis needs to do is draft a run-clogging (read not 3-tech pass rush) DEFENSIVE TACKLE. I would like to see Dan Williams.

Need a MLB. Either upgrade Morrison or keep him. Don’t allow the position to be degraded. Still need a veteran at the position.

    RT, RG, C needs upgrades.

Might not be able to upgrade everything this year. But definitely need to address the big DT position.

Green, gone. Fargas, gone. Alston, gone. Morrison, on the auction block. The team is looking to upgrade at some VERY important positions. How is Davis NOT doing a good job?
