Raiders acknowledge Wimbley acquisition

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, March 14th, 2010 at 5:21 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders announced the signing of the Kamerion Wimbley trade on their Web site Sunday without giving the compensation.

Beat writer Steve Corkran is reporting the Raiders sent the Browns a third-round draft pick obtained in the Derrick Burgess trade with New England. It’s worth noting the Raiders could get a third-round pick if Kirk Morrison signs an offer sheet with another team.

Wimbley’s agent, reached by e-mail, said, “Kamerion is very accepting of the Browns decision and he is looking forward to working with coach Cable. There were no hard feelings and he wishes the Browns the best.”

The Raiders company line on the Wimbley trade is they’ve got a fourth first-round draft pick on their defensive unit, joining Nnamdi Asomugha, Richard Seymour and Michael Huff.

The downside is the mission statement of the 2010 Raiders defense is to stop the run, and Wimbley comes from a Cleveland defense that finished just one spot ahead of Oakland in rushing defense (28th). The Browns gave up 4.6 yards per carry to Oakland’s 4.5.

Wimbley is due to make $1,065,000 this season, and Adam Caplan of Scout.com, the first to break the story, reports the contract voids after this season but says “there’s an up to $7.765 million buyback for 2011 based on statistical achievement from previous seasons.”

    WORTH THE RISK!!

  3. jhill Says:

Trevor Scott will be one of the starting LBs next year. You can take that to the bank. He took Thomas Howard’s position already, and Wimbley is not here to take his spot. Heck, Thomas Howard AND Morrison might both be gone.

why do i have a feeling morrison goes to the browns and thats the 3rd round pick lmao

Whatever the case is with Scott & Wimbley you can be sure of 1 thing.

Al has told Marshall who is playing where..

  6. jhill Says:

I swear I was about to post that same thing 619. Either Morrison or Howard to the Browns, right?

    LMFAO!

  7. Nnamdi21 Says:

Like I’ve said, Raiders have a decent track record with DE’s last few seasons.

Quinn sucks, but worth the risk for Denver.

Theres a reason “the most NFL ready QB” slid down the boards on draft day.

I see alot of the same smirk from Matt Cassel.

Look forward to mangling Brady and the Broncos.

No problem with Morrison staying as long as he’s NOT MLB.

Whether he cooose to remember or not, he HAS played SLB with us.

Needs to go back to it and we need a REAL MLB

Then again, Cleveland traded it’s DT too, right?

Oaklands had success finding DE’s the last few years.

Burgess was a disappointment in Philly.

Chris Clemmons racked up sacks here.

    Shaughnessy’s showing signs.

    Got production out of Ellis.

    Wimbley might contribute too.
    _______________________________________________________

yeah you’re right, but it really doesnt matter when sacks isnt what we should care about, we need to stop the run, if we acquired the leagues best run-stopper, then it would be great…

Freakin’ A ladies and gentleman. with the acquisition of Wimbley the D will now rank in the top 5 and a championship is just around the corner. Yay.

If Old Man Al could only acquire Vernon Gholston from the Jets we would have the “best looking team getting off the bus with the least football skills” roster in the league. Once again Al proves that he cares nothing about actual production/football players and is obsessed with physical specimens. This franchise is doomed unitl Al is six feet under.

It has been years since Al Davis has shown in any way that he truly wants to win a Super Bowl.

JaMarcus Russell is not as bad as his critics think he is. Since the Gruden/Gannon team fell apart, every QB we’ve had has either struggled or been prone to injury. This means that the playcalling and the offensive line are as much to blame for our poor passing offense as anything.

  39. Mistabr0wn Says:

I’m ok with the Wimbley trade. The guy is bigger and most of all, hes different. I want to see new guys on this team competing. I don’t know what he’ll become here but I like Marshall and what hes done so far so maybe this is a guy he feels fits what hes trying to do, I have no idea. All I know is, I’m definitely eager to see what this guy can do with the Raiders.

  49. r8eray Says:

He’s been a busy guy the last few weeks, Bob!

  50. jhill Says:

Yeah, I guess your right MB.

Wimbley is a LB and we only Scott under contract for next year. Morrison says he has some things set up with another team, and maybe Howard wont be back either.

Or maybe Scott is our new MLB and Wimbley and Howard are the OLBs.

  51. 24 Says:

My guess is Wimbley will play Strong Outside Linebacker? I noticed Marshall was blitzing a lot more than other Defensive Coordinators from years past so I’m thinking he got more ammunition with Scott on the Right and now Wimbley on the left. Now we just need a stout MLB in the middle and a nose tackle and we’re much more talented.

  52. Norco Bob Says:

Thats no excuse,…I was getitng one about every two days,..now nothing.

  53. 24 Says:

Scott won’t be a Middle Linebacker with his blitzing skills. He’s too valuable getting pressure and sacks from the outside.

  54. Raiders4eve Says:

    Jhill

Scott won’t be our MLB, he lacks the speed needed to run side to side. Its gonna be SLB Wimbley WLB Scott. I think Howard and Morrison are done, I think both will get traded, Morrison might go to the Colts where he will be a perfect right there.

  55. jhill Says:

    Yeah, that makes sense 4eve.

If we end up with extra picks courtesy of Morrison and Howard, that would be sweet.

  56. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Wimbley’s a sissy. That’s why he’s here. What, did Al Davis have to win some high stakes showdown to bring him here? Answer: No.

  57. Norco Bob Says:

Hi MR ol buddy,..lol..I had a feeling you wouldnt like this move,..(by the way theres one other I know will pee on it too)… :)

  58. Norco Bob Says:

  59. Norco Bob Says:

For the record, I never heard of Wimbley until about 2 hours ago. Print that kids.

  60. Norco Bob Says:

Spring training was cool,..however,…our poor A`s,..even in Cactus League, as in the majors,..we have the worst ball parks. :(

  61. Norco Bob Says:

However with the Raiders, In now never want a new house,..now that Im in row 1, at 61 per, I bet a new house row 1 would be like 90 bucks,..so heres to hoping we never get a new stadium.

  62. priesttj Says:

Man stop trying to slve eevrything with one move. It is what it is. OTA’s are just aaround the corner and strength and conditioning is starting tomorrow.

I think it’s very simple Wimbly is either a guy they want to use off the edge or at SLB which i don’t agree with. But Scott is settled at his position we know what he’ll be doing and Wimbly gives us another guy with that kind of ability. One of the things trhat always frustrated me about Howard and Kirk is their inability to close on the blitz. Scott has proven he has that ability and hopefully so deos Wimbley. No matter how many times you blitzed Howard he never seem to get there. Same with Morrison which discourages a coach from trying it.

Mitchell seems to have a knack for getting there. We need more players who have that ability. It’s easy to say we should blitz more but if the guy’s we’re blitzing suck at it, why do it?

I would love to see one more edge rusher a real demon off the edge. Matt S is going to be a star but we need a guy coming off the open end. To really be effective. Im hoping if we don’t get the OT in the 1st rnd that we do get the edge rusher MLB can wait much later as far as I’m concerned. Iwas watching Charles Brown and T Williams at OT lately I like both players especially Williams but I’m telling you CB from SC is a player.

Jimmy Clausen is a bust waiting to happen, While Bradford could be a real star.

  63. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

    Wimbley was born a female.

  64. Norco Bob Says:

    Oh Lord MR,..that for real?…gross.

  65. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

The average 12 year old pop warner football linebacker has a better grasp of building a defense in the NFL today than Al Davis does.

  66. Norco Bob Says:

Priest, thats too much for me to read, but I will assume you are saying Wimbley is a future hall of famer,..anyway I will give you a shout out on Garys show tomorrow,..I am calling about the games in San Jose,…march madness,..we got crappy games man,.major disappointment.

  67. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Wimbley just signed to the Oakland Raiders on the cheap. It’s not because he’s a future hall of famer.

  68. Norco Bob Says:

Geez I go a week with no Al Davis talk,..I pop in here,..and MR is still agrivated about him,…hang in there baby.

  69. Norco Bob Says:

Tell you what MR,..next season, when Im in row 1,..once a game, for you, I will turn over my right shoulder and lob my middle finger to box 43,..cool?

  70. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Saying Wimbley is a future hall of fame when he just signed to the Raiders is like saying the guy at the bar who gets rejected by every girl and winds up with the fat chick might be the next Hugh Hefner.

  71. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

    Right on, man. Thanks.

  72. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Wayne Valley has a sharper football mind than Al Davis…even still, today.

  73. Norco Bob Says:

Unsure he can see that far,..but someone up there will tell him a fan is saluting him. Word.

  74. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

There’s things Al Davis is more suited for today than running an NFL football team, like checkers, and watching wheel of fortune.

  75. Norco Bob Says:

    Dang,..whos that?…shall I google him?

  76. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

  81. Thec07 Says:

  82. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

What do you mean Belichick’s done? Done shining Al Davis on and telling him they’re buddies, so that Al will give him draft picks for has beens? Not hardly.

  83. Norco Bob Says:

Dang,…should I have heard of Wimbley before this afternoon? Im slippin.

  84. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Al made this trade to keep our rushing yards allowed on defense below 200/game.

  85. Norco Bob Says:

If wimbley can play in the nfl, I would take that then what davis would take in the 3rd round…so there. Good move.

  86. Norco Bob Says:

Gotta run,..by the way,..they still serve ya beer in your seats in Arizona,…cant beat that!…g`night!

  87. Thec07 Says:

Belichet’s turn is over. this year its the hologram show. We just got took for a third….Yet another bad move. this guy plays in a 3-4. are we switching?

  88. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

So, now Holmgren is calling Al Davis up, shining him on, telling him how good of buddies they are and how they go way back, so that Al will give up draft picks for bums like Wimbley? Makes sense.

  94. DKnight007 Says:

Wimbley will probably be better and more productive than one of the 3rd rounders the old man would have drafted anyway.

Ryan used him wrong last season as more of a rover and read and react guy instead of a disruptive pass rusher wish is his strength. Wimbley played with his hand down as a pass rushing DE who at times stood up and rushed the passer much like how T Scott is being used now.

I wonder if Marshall plans on using him as a down pass rushing RDE, or as a stand up hybrid to be used like Scott are they going to try him as the MIKE to replace Morrison? Or will there be more 3-4 looks?

Regardless I think Wimbley is worth one of the two 3rd rounders…..since the old man would most likely have reached anyway with one of those picks and make a John Bowie type of waste pick.

If they they get a 3rd rounder for Morrison (which seems certainly possible now IMO) then they will get a 3rd back anyway.

Your assuming the old man would have drafted a OT with one of those two 3rd rounders.

For all we know he would have drafted a KR and a CB. haha

I would like to see the 4th round pick be on KR/CB Javier Arenas. Getting Arenas in Round 4 would be good value.

I think the old man is expecting to get that 3rd rounder back when Morrison gets a contract offer from another team.

“Wimbley bolsters the Raiders 3-4 package, but doesn’t necessaily mean the Raiders will “go 3-4″ in 2010.

In the past, they’ve run a 3-4 in the red zone, but last season they ran it more in passing situations too, with a zone blitz which was effective more than not.”

  110. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

Raiders are not going to a 3-4. Who’s going to man the NT position? The Raiders have NO true run clogging, lineman absorbing defensive tackle on the roster. Kelly, Seymour, Bryant are 3-techs at best…neither are NT.

The Raiders need to draft Dan Williams in the 1st round or Cody AT A MINIMUM in the 2nd round.

BTW, Suh and McCoy are 3-techs too

  111. Nnamdi21 Says:

Kirwin has Raiders taking Anthony Davis of Rutgers at 8.

Wimbley’s a sissy. That’s why he’s here. What, did Al Davis have to win some high stakes showdown to bring him here?
    ==========================================

No. Actually, YOU are the sissy. If Al actually wins some games, you end up as an idiot. So your vested interest is for the Raiders to lose. You know, idiot, you are on the wrong site for that.

GOOD MORNING SPORT’S FAN’S,RAIDER’S HAVE A NEW LB,BRONCO’S HAVE A NEW QB.HOPEFULLY THEY WILL BE IN VERY CLOSE CONTACT MANY,MANY TIMES IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS…

  120. RaiderRockstar Says:

Oakland senior executive John Herrera confirmed the deal, saying Oakland gave up a pick it had acquired in a previous deal. The Raiders had acquired a third-round pick from New England last summer in a deal for Derrick Burgess.

“This gives us a guy who has been a strong presence as a pass rusher,” Herrera said. “He has been very productive.”

    ***

doesn’t sound like Wimbley will be making the switch to MLB any time soon.

This finally fills the void at OLB we’ve been trying to solve by throwing in scrubs like Sam Williams, Jon Alston & Robert Thomas in recent years. Doesn’t sound like the Raiders have much faith in Norris or Nixon (to be that guy) either …

So we’re ok if Thomas Howard gets traded (2nd rounder), but what about Morrison? Capt Kirk has more trade value and teams can get him for a 3rd!

  121. RaiderRockstar Says:

what if nobody trades for Morrison or Howard?

Morrison, Howard, Brown, Scott & Wimbley.

    I like it :)

now go get a real NT!

  122. jhill Says:

“This gives us a guy who has been a strong presence as a pass rusher,”

Greg Ellis was a 3-4 LB who came to us and became the “pass rugh” threat, etc, etc.

How is Wimbley not our DE? If we employ a “pass rushiing” LB into our gameplan, then I’d be a bit surprosed.

  123. RaiderRockstar Says:

if Wimbley takes playing time away from Seymour & Shaughnessy at DE I’d be a bit surprised.

…especially with guys like Scott & Howard at OLB who aren’t very stout against the run.

wait. nevermind. we’re talking about the Raiders here

forget I said anything. carry on

  124. neilb Says:

Our first plus Morrison and Howard for the Rams first.

  125. RaiderRockstar Says:

I can see the Ellis to Wimbley comparison though and it makes sense.

I just think we’re fine at DE with Seymour & Shaughnessy. Richardson & Gunheim is adequate depth there too. Kelly & Bryant can even play DE in a pinch if several DE’s got banged up. Scott can play DE on obvious passing downs.

  126. jhill Says:

I’ll just say that this is going to be really interesting to watch develop.

    Wimbley – Seymour – Kelly – Shaugnessy

    Hmmmm

    Wimbley – MLB – Scott

    Hmmmmm

    Draft Cody at 8?

I think that is the option I am hoping for at this point. Wimbley and Scott at OLB with Ricky Brown at MLB works for me if I can get those 2 picks.

Of course I drafting a MLB somewhere. I think I go with a Penn State guy.

  129. neilb Says:

    Morning Dirt-lot…

    I’d take Suh.Everytime.

  130. RaiderRockstar Says:

Our first plus Morrison and Howard for the Rams first.

James Laurinaitis is the only LB on the Rams roster who wasn’t a 7th rounder or undrafted free agent. they have nobody to play linebacker, so this could work.

However – they could always get guys like Danny Clark, Joey Porter, Antonio Pierce, Larry Foote, Zach Thomas, Keith Bulluck, Cato June, Angelo Crowell & Pisa Tinoisamoa in free agency without giving up anything …

  131. jhill Says:

    Neilb,

Trading up to #1 to take a 3 tech DT would need a lot of other things to happen as well. TK would have to be traded first and foremost. We can’t just cut him and get nothing in return. And we would still have to get another DT on top of the one we take at 1.

  132. hwnrdr Says:

If so, go ahead and keep our pick at 8, and draft the fat fucc Cody.

    Trade TK for another #3

    ***

sure it’s possible. anything is possible!

Morrison said a few teams have shown interest, but no word yet on which teams or if he has any visits scheduled.

Howard just about got benched last year for Trevor Scott at WLB until Ricky Brown & Jon Alston both got hurt and Howard was forced to play SLB. I know he’s disgruntled about getting tendered too. I don’t think anybody would give up a 2nd rounder for this guy. Maybe he’ll eventually sign his tender and the Raiders can trade him away for a 4th?

  140. neilb Says:

Yeah,I know it’s never going to happen but the thought of the QB running for his life with Suh and Seymour after him is a fun one!

  141. neilb Says:

    The other DE Jhill.

Shaungnessy and Kelly at DE,with Suh and Seymour inside.

  142. jhill Says:

I think we are overthinking this though.

Wimbley and Scott are our OLBs. Howard lost his job to Trevor Scott, and has now been replaced by Wimbley.

Morrison and Howard are free to seek employment elsewhere, and we will get draft picks when they go elsewhere. Hard to see them tucking their tails and settling for a one year tender type offer.

  143. neilb Says:

Got to go to work.Late shift this week.

  144. RaiderRockstar Says:

Morrison and Howard are free to seek employment elsewhere, and we will get draft picks when they go elsewhere. Hard to see them tucking their tails and settling for a one year tender type offer.

    ***

easier said than done Jhill. just because a player is available doesn’t mean a team will trade for him!

I’ll admit, Morrison for a 3rd is cheap I think at least one team will make him an offer.

Howard is the one i’m afraid we might get stuck with…

  145. jhill Says:

Shaugnessy and Seymour Will start at DE with Seymour moving to DT in passing situations.

Richardson is a solid #3 at DE, and Scott and Wimbley will get snaps with their hand in the ground on 3rd down.

  146. jhill Says:

If we trade Howard, then it won’t necessarily require a #2. If no team signs him outright as a RFA, I would still expect him to get traded. Maybe for a player.

Thomas Howard is not John Alston, lol.

  147. Thec07 Says:

Jhill, what up Bro? The whole wimbley deal seems like a waste, just like the DHB pick. Not sure we nneede this wimbley guy…

  148. RaiderRockstar Says:

If we trade Howard, then it won’t necessarily require a #2. If no team signs him outright as a RFA, I would still expect him to get traded. Maybe for a player.

    ***

as of right now, he can only be had for a 2nd rounder.

there are no negotiations (for picks or players) with RFA’s unless they sign the tender and become the team’s property again.

so if nobody wants Howard for a 2nd, eventually he’ll have to sign his tender. Then maybe we can work something out with another team, but there are no guarantees. I wouldn’t give him away for anything less than a 4th, or maybe a 3rd in 2011.

  149. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

    Trade DMAC for Kamerion Wimbley!

  150. jhill Says:

Well, I think we know that Seymour and Shaugnessy will be starting at DE. I think we also know that Wimbley and Scott will be starting at OLB.

There is no place for Howard to play. I don’t think he signs the tender to come back as a backup. Will be interesting to see how the compensation works out.

  151. jhill Says:

And is Ricky Brown our new MLB ?!?!??!

  152. bcz24 Says:

This is a terrible trade. It makes no sense… he is a 3-4 OLB, and Im sure he isnt moving to DE anytime soon. Just wasnt a position of need, to be had for a 3rd rounder… Stupid move the epitomizes 7 consecutive 11 loss seasons. We need a mlb… so we go trade for an olb. Perfect.

  153. Thec07 Says:

Bcz24, I fell the same way. Why, can someone explain this to me? Why did we give up a third for this guy?
    Just doesnt make sense…

  154. RaiderRockstar Says:

There is no place for Howard to play. I don’t think he signs the tender to come back as a backup. Will be interesting to see how the compensation works out.

    ***

Howard won’t have a choice Jhill. he can sign the tender and compete for a spot in Oakland or refuse to sign it and play for nobody. I think he’ll take the money. Then he’ll hope the Raiders deem him expendable and trade him away so he can pursue a long-term deal with his new team.

  155. bcz24 Says:

At least we only gave up the Burgess pick.

  156. bcz24 Says:

After a certain point, if he doesnt sign the tender he becomes a UFA. I think any team considering him is looking at it as we can wait until after the draft and get the guy for nothing.

  157. RaiderRockstar Says:

we really won’t know Wimbley’s role on this team until OTA’s. I doubt Cable will say anything until then

if Scott stays at WLB and nobody trades for Morrison and/or Howard the picture is a little cloudy

Seymour was given the DE tag, not the DT tag. the DE tag is much more expensive, so I’m sure Al Davis has no plans to play him exclusively at DT next to Tommy Kelly.

Matt Shaughnessy made Greg Ellis expendable. the rookie showed so much promise he pushed the team’s sack leader & vocal leader in the locker room off the roster completely.

sounds to me like Howard, Brown, Scott & Wimbley will fight for 2 OLB spots unless Howard goes to another team and we get a 2nd rounder in return …

  158. jhill Says:

Why, can someone explain this to me? Why did we give up a third for this guy?

    ——————————————————-

He’s under contract through 2011 at a VERY reasonable salary. Compare that to the $ we would have to pay Morrison or Howard, players who they don’t like, it’s a good deal. Not only that, Wimbley is a better player.

Essentially a wash with the pick we’ll get back for Morrison.

  159. jhill Says:

sounds to me like Howard, Brown, Scott & Wimbley will fight for 2 OLB spots

    ——————————————————-

I don’t see that at all. Wimbley is starting. You don’t trade away a 3rd rd pick for a backup player.. And Scott was arguably our best LB last year.

The only question I see is whether Ricky Brown is our MLB?

  160. RaiderRockstar Says:

After a certain point, if he doesnt sign the tender he becomes a UFA. I think any team considering him is looking at it as we can wait until after the draft and get the guy for nothing.

    ***

I don’t think thats right BCZ. otherwise the donks would have tagged Elvis Dumervil or Brandon Marshall. every player is angry about being tendered as a restricted free agent. they want big long-term deals full of guaranteed money, but teams are being smart with the impending lockout next year.

Marshall requires a 1st & Dumervil requires a 1st & 3rd. then the donks can match (if they chose). these players will NEVER hit the open market with the donks getting nothing in return – trust me.

  161. bcz24 Says:

Your assuming we WILL get a pick for morrison. I do agree that Wimbleys salary is very reasonable. I dont agree that he is a better player.

  162. RaiderRockstar Says:

it’s impossible to know if Brown & Scott will start until Morrison & Howard are traded.

Scott is weak against the run.

Jerry Mac compared Wimbley to Scott.

Personally I hope KW is much better against the run than TS!

  163. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

So if Wimbley is a starter, is it at SLB or DE? I would hate to see him take ShoNasty’s minutes when our LBs are so weak…

But PFT says he will be a hands-down rush end as he was at FSU.

  164. bcz24 Says:

Just because the tender is for a 1 or a 1 & 3 does not mean a team interested in trading HAS to give that compensation. I was listening to NFL radio on Sirius this morning and Randy Cross said that at some point after the draft RFA’s become UFA’s.

  165. bcz24 Says:

The donks did franchise Dumerville didnt they??

  166. jhill Says:

Trevor Scott, weak against the run?

I think you’re the first person I’ve heard say that. Usually, it’s Howard getting bashed for his play against the run. Even from the coaches. He lost his starting job to Scott.

  167. RaiderRockstar Says:

the Browns replaced Kamerion Wimbley with Scott Fujita.

if Fujita is a better run defender than Wimbley then we really got hosed in this deal …

Wimbley just feels like another Derrick Burgess/Greg Ellis type of player to me. pass rush and nothing more

  168. jhill Says:

I do agree that Wimbleys salary is very reasonable. I dont agree that he is a better player.

Scott at WLB might be a little better against the run, but it’s hard to know just HOW MUCH better. teams ran the ball AT WILL against us last year with or without Scott in the lineup. get a real NT and we’ll find out

  175. Thec07 Says:

Jhill, “IF” we get a pick for morrison, will it be a higher or lower pick? I know we cant tell at this point but man it seems we make some of the weirdest moves, that really never pan out…

  179. bcz24 Says:

Thats just it, the Wimbley move would make a lot more sense to me if we werent so deep at OLB already. He isnt going to beat out Seymour for DE, are we planning on moving Shaunassy inside to tackle? I just dont get it. He is averaging 5 sacks a year, outside of his rookie year. Maybe Marshall will be free to call more blitzes this year, but I doubt that, so Wimbleys sack numbers my drop when he is asked to play in coverage instead of rushing the passer.

  180. vegas raider Says:

It looks like Al is making most of his moves for the 2010 season, and than figuring there will be a lockout in 2011 and he could be dead after that anyways.

Everybody got tendered, but nobody was signed for even 2 years. Than Wimbley, who is probably cheaper than a 3rd rounder would be in 2010, will probably be more productive and has only two years on his deal (i.e. can cut him next year with no real damages).

I like this trade. Not a great trade, and not a bad one. If the Raiders can get slightly more out of him than the Browns, it will be well worth it.

  181. RaiderRockstar Says:

is Wimbley a 3rd down DE? pass rush specialist?

    running plays:

    LB: Howard-Morrison-Scott

    passing plays:

    DL: Wimbley-Kelly-Seymour-Shaughnessy

    LB: Howard-Morrison-Scott

you guys know how Al Davis loves that pressure from the front 4 alone. Wimbley is the new Chris Clemons (8 sacks in this role in 2007)

I don’t know man, 15 years seems a little long. I hope he gets healthy and wins another bowl and tells everyone to shove it while shytting in a bag.

But I deal with old people in my work, that’s what I do. People as immobile and old as him can make a wrong turn and be taking a dirt nap in a matter of a couple of months.

  185. RaiderRockstar Says:

just hope he can stay healthy!

  186. bcz24 Says:

I guess my knee jerk reaction to ANY trade the Raiders make is to think that we arent going to get the best out of him. Seymour is a good example… we gave up possible a top 10 pick for 4 sacks. We dont utilize guys to their strengths, and we definitely dont get the best out of these guys. I hope Wimbley will prove me wrong, he is not the worst guy we have picked up over the last 7 years that is for sure.

    =======================

Not really. He’ll be a DE and a LB. His diveristy in the 4-3 and 3-4 make him a valuable commodity to a Raider team that has ran and is running both systems.

Look for Scott to play standing up and with his hand in the ground too like last year.

    ====================

Seymour was given the DE tag, not the DT tag. the DE tag is much more expensive, so I’m sure Al Davis has no plans to play him exclusively at DT next to Tommy Kelly.

    ===================

Doubtful Davis would let something like price dictate where Seymour would play. He’ll likely do as he did in NE, play both to creat mismatches along the line.
Seymour CAN anchor the end in a 3-4 and slip inside in a 4-3 package.

    DIVERSITY.

Its always been a Davis hallmark.

    ===================

Matt Shaughnessy made Greg Ellis expendable. the rookie showed so much promise he pushed the team’s sack leader & vocal leader in the locker room off the roster completely.

    =======================

Ellis’s knees made him expendable. He sat out most practices the back half of the season and limped thru the year even in a limited role.

Speaking of limited roles, Shaughnessy had 29 tackles and 4 sacks in 2 starts. He saw action in all 16, but has had serious injuires himslef in his young career.

    Kamerion is good insurance.

Again, Ellis’s knees forced him off the team and out of the game but Shaughnessy will be one to watch.

    ==================

sounds to me like Howard, Brown, Scott & Wimbley will fight for 2 OLB spots unless Howard goes to another team and we get a 2nd rounder in return …

    ===============

Wouldn’t count home town hero Morrison out just yet. He’s a Davis favorite and unrelentingly positive. A move to SAm would be welcome and though Morrison claims he’s never done it, Jerry pointed out how Morrison had early on in Oakland.

It will be interesting to see how Marshall handles Mr Davis’s pass rush / cover D this year. He seems to be taking the diversification part to heart and keeping up with the NFL’s zone blitzes and hybrid defenders.
We’ll see if they go O line to give their defense some poitns to protect other wise tis going to be a long run in 2010.

    Pun intended.

Alston’s gone. Thats ok, one more concusion and their will be talk of retirement.

Brown seems to need a little more Sand in his pants and our mid round rookie pick will be lucky to make the practice squad.

Morrison could stay, but with a 3, might go.

Howard likley stays and is a vocal leader on the field and good in coverage as well.

    Hope he stays.

Wimbley’s coverage improved last year, but he’s got a ways to go. Think he’ll likey be a hand in the dirt guy for us and use that quick first step.

Not a bad pick up theoretically.

  193. vegas raider Says:

So the Browns in 2008 had 3 QB’s on the roster, Derek Anderson, Brady Quinn and my man Bruce at the end of the year.

They gave Derek a $28 million extension after one year, drafted Brady with a first rounder and had Bruce for nothing. They let Bruce walk for nothing, have to release Anderson and get nothing after he received over $10 million in 2008 and 2009, and than trade Quinn for a backup RB and a 6th rounder. LMAO, great job Browns!!!! No wonder they have never been to a Super Bowl.

Interesting to see who of the three has the best of the rest of their NFL career from here.

  194. bcz24 Says:

Talk about bad personal moves… the Browns are paying Jake Delhomme 7 million guaranteed next year! LMAO. Equal production from older players. LOL… Holmgren must have went to the AL Davis school for personal decisions.

thats what we did at times last year sending Mitchell, Scott (from WLB), Routt, Asomugha & Huff.

    we don’t have a 4-3 NT, much less a 3-4 NT!

throwing Kelly, Bryant or Seymour in the middle of a 3-4 line spells disaster. I’ll pass

“Trade fever: Kamerion Wimbley dealt by Cleveland Browns to Oakland Raiders for third-round draft pick
    By Tony Grossi
    March 14, 2010, 10:04PM
    UPDATED: 10:05 p.m.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Kamerion Wimbley was the best pass rusher on a Browns team seemingly always lacking in that fundamental part of the game.

That didn’t stop the Browns from trading Wimbley to the Oakland Raiders on Sunday for a third-round pick in this year’s draft.

This one came out of left field.

“I didn’t know anything was up,” said agent Joe Linta. “Is it a shocker? I would say so. I don’t think anybody saw this coming. Apparently they made the decision to get rid of him.

“He is clearly one of the top five players on the team and you can’t have a better consummate person in the locker room.”

Wimbley, the Browns’ first-round pick in 2006, was young (not 27 until October), dependable (the only game he missed in four years was because of the flu) and affordable ($1.065 million salary in 2010).

What’s more, Wimbley’s 26.5 career sacks were the most posted in a four-season stretch by a Brown in the expansion era. Linebacker Jamir Miller had 13 sacks in 2001, but totaled 22.5 in his three years with the team.

The trade completes a 360-degree spin in a Cleveland uniform for the athletic — some described him as elastic — Wimbley. He came to the Browns in a controversial trade by former General Manager Phil Savage. The Browns held the No. 12 spot in the first round in 2006 and Baltimore, Savage’s former team, was right behind at No. 13.

In the Browns’ draft room, the debate was whether to select defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, the premier run-stopper in that draft, or Wimbley, the second-best pass rusher. Wimbley was a bit of a projection because he played defensive end at Florida State and the Browns planned on converting him to outside linebacker in the 3-4 scheme then run by former head coach Romeo Crennel.

Savage knew Baltimore GM Ozzie Newsome, his former boss, coveted Ngata. Savage asked Crennel, “Do you want the run stopper or the pass rusher?” Crennel gave the nod to the pass rusher. Savage then traded down one spot with his division rival — a taboo move in the NFL. The Ravens paid the bargain price of a sixth-round pick.

Savage used the sixth round pick on Stanford nose tackle Baba Oshinowo, who played one game for the Browns and had two tackles. Ngata has been a stalwart in the middle of the Ravens’ defense and has made two Pro Bowl appearances.

Wimbley tried hard to make the trade look like a good move. He started in his second NFL game and proceeded to set a Browns rookie record with 11 sacks in 2006. But he slumped to five and four over the next two years.

Wimbley showed a resurgence under coach Eric Mangini in 2009 with 6.5 sacks and seemed to be expanding his game as an every-down linebacker in the 3-4 defensive system.

Wimbley may have been the most athletic and productive player on the defense other than tackle Shaun Rogers. He was third on the team with 68 tackles in 2009, first in sacks with 6.5 and added one forced fumble.

ESPN reported that the Browns had multiple offers for Wimbley, but none was better than the Raiders’ third-round pick.

If no linebackers are added, it’s possible the Browns would line up Marcus Benard, a 2009 undrafted free agent, in Wimbley’s weakside outside post. Matt Roth, a restricted free agent, could be the other outside linebacker. Or newly signed free agent Scott Fujita, formerly of New Orleans, could join the mix.”

There was a reason Quinn slid on draft day and the Browns made the homne town sympathy selection to their chagrin.

I hope Quinn is a lage bust in Denver and that we crush him mightly.

I hope he loses Brandon Marshall to an NFC team and the Broncos don’t get him any line help this draft too.

I just can’t see how you think Morrison will be back.

I mean, a LB of his so called talents available for 3rd rd pick?

same could be said for Wimbley, no?

3rd rounder is all it took?

and the Browns replaced him with Scott Fujita?

    yikes!

We trade for one LB and still have two unsigned and you people are talking about a 3-4 defense?

    lmao come on people

N21: we didn’t play 3-4 last year at all that I can remember

I doubt Al Davis makes that request and John Marshall has always been a 4-3 DC.

we can still blitz out of the 4-3. look at Philly!

thats what we did at times last year sending Mitchell, Scott (from WLB), Routt, Asomugha & Huff.

    we don’t have a 4-3 NT, much less a 3-4 NT!

throwing Kelly, Bryant or Seymour in the middle of a 3-4 line spells disaster. I’ll pass

    ==================

We certainly did, had and have for years.

We run it in red zone packages.

I certainly won’t miss Big Gerard Warren dropping into coverage on those zone blitzes.

I for one love the move, even though I never heard of the guy before yesterday,..but brian called me, told me its a great move, as long as we get a hardcore nose tackle soon, trade or draft,…but brian likes the guy…good enough for me…by the way I just read poor old MR yesterday after I left, was making fun of a person going to spring training,..hmmm,..well, when I was in spring training havin a blast with the Giants and A`s, MR was in here all weekend complaining about the state of the Raiders,…I guess he feels thats an enjoyable weekend,..that pretty much sums up the life of MR,..hope he cheers up soon.

you’re thinking of a Rob Ryan defense in Oakland, not a John Marshall defense. sorry bro. not buying it

Marshall also pitched the prevent defense Ryan & Davis loved after it cost us the Week 1 game against SD.

Nnam… I seriously dont recall ever seeing the Raiders in a 3-4. I havent watched as closely over the last few years admittedly, because I cant get DirectTv at my home.

  204. RaiderRockstar Says:

since we’ve added Wimbley, does that mean we’ll pass on Derrick Morgan or JPP now?

Cleveland Browns won’t even get a high No. 3 for Kamerion Wimbley
    By Tony Grossi

CLEVELAND — Upon further review, the Browns’ trade of linebacker Kamerion Wimbley to Oakland is worse than originally thought.

According to reports, the Raiders apparently will send the Browns the lower of their two picks in the third round for Wimbley, a No. 1 pick in 2006.

The Raiders obtained a third-round pick from New England — No. 86 overall — last year in exchange for defensive lineman Richard Seymour. That’s the pick coming to the Browns instead of Oakland’s own third-round pick, No. 70 overall.

The Browns have not confirmed the trade.

Browns President Mike Holmgren is expected to address the media later this afternoon.

  208. RaiderRockstar Says:

    on a positive note:

I don’t think Al Davis could have drafted a pass rush specialist better than Wimbley at 86th overall in the draft …

  209. bcz24 Says:

On a more positive not… at least we arent paying Jake Delhomme 7mil

Not as a base for sure, but yes, we do and have run the 3-4 aside from Ryan’s failed attempt to make Sapp a 3-4 DE.
