JaMarcus vs. Quinn _ twice a year

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, March 15th, 2010 at 7:49 am in Oakland Raiders.

Note: Wrote this on Sunday, putting it aside when the Raiders signed Kamerion Wimbley.

With the news that the Cleveland Browns have traded Brady Quinn to the Cleveland Browns for running back Peyton Hillis and a pair of draft picks, it pits the two quarterbacks rated as the prize catches of the 2007 draft against each other in the AFC West.

Now all JaMarcus Russell and Quinn does is make their respective teams, assuming they both win spots on the 53-man roster.

Realistically, Russell probably has the best chance to start, while Quinn, Cleveland’s 22nd choice in the first round in 2007, is the most likely to make the team.

Huh?

If Russell comes to camp in shape and fares well enough to give Bruce Gradkowski a legitimate comp, he’d probably start based on his $9.45 million salary and status as the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

Quinn arrives with a relatively modest $700,000 salary, and won’t be given the benefit of the doubt against starter Kyle Orton. Broncos coach Josh McDaniels has already called Orton to alleviate any doubt.

To win the job, Quinn would have to come to camp and be much better than Orton, and there’s been little in his play so far to believe he’s capable of winning the job. Especially with Orton having a year’s head start in the current system. But given his salary, Quinn is being paid on a backup rate and he’d have to be awful to be cut.

As it turns out, the hot quarterback from the 2007 draft is Kevin Kolb, a much sought-after backup to Donovan McNabb. Kolb, a second-round pick and No. 36 overall, will replace Donovan McNabb at some point _ unless another team manages to pry him from the Eagles with a significant trade offer.

Seems unlikely the Eagles would go to training camp with McNabb, Kolb and Michael Vick all on the roster.

The rest of the quarterback class of 2007 after Russell, Quinn and Kolb:

Second round, No. 40 overall: John Beck, BYU (Miami)
Second round, No. 43 overall: Drew Stanton, Michigan State (Detroit)
Third round, No. 92 overall: Trent Edwards, Stanford (Buffalo)
Fifth round, No. 151 overall: Jeff Rowe, Nevada-Reno (Cincinnati)
Fifth round, No. 174 overall: Troy Smith, Ohio State (Baltimore)
Sixth round, No. 205 overall: Jordan Palmer, Texas-El Paso (Washington)
Seventh round, No. 217 overall: Tyler Thigpen, Coastal Carolina (Minnesota)

I mean if you were TRYING to get fired could you do a much better job than what Russell has done for the last 10 months?

For what it’s worth, a bunch of Bronco’s didn’t show up today for voluntaries either. But PFT reports it like it is the Restricted guys and tendered one’s, not guys with a $9 million dollar salary and $3 million guaranteed.

“Honestly man, it starts way too early. I think our first game is what, September?” Champ Bailey told the Post. “It is what it is, though. They pay me a lot of money to come here and work out with these guys though, so I’m going to be here.”

Russell is probably “excused” from just about everything by coach Cable.

Cable has moved on with “his guys”.

Bruce & Charlie have signed and are already working hard in preparation for next season. That’s all he cares about imo

Tiki called out Eli for his leadership skills, but he just wanted him to speak up more in the locker room and be more vocal. It was never about putting in work and showing up for things.

    HUGE difference.

I get it. So what are you saying the fallout is? JR isn’t there for the 1st day of weightlifting so now when he throws Chaz the ball, Chaz will intentionally drop it? I think you saw last season in the short time they had together that’s not the case. I could care less if JR is loved or hated in the locker room. Everybody needs to do their jobs.

    ++++++++++++++++

Skipping offseason activities might be okay for Favre, but not for fat ass QBs that look lost on the field in year 3.

  • http://none The Real MaddenRaider

Russell needs to be cut. He doesn’t want to play, he already got what he wanted. Al’s clinging on to him to save face and not concede to his only number one overall pick being a bust. Of course he’s not really a bust, anyway. No QB can succeed in this system. Drew Brees would be a bust in this system. So would Manning, Peyton and the retarded younger one.

  • http://none The Real MaddenRaider

Russell doesn’t have a job. He hustled Al Davis, he and his agent. It is Al Davis’s job, on the other hand, to build a Super Bowl team. Unless, of course, Al Davis is just a hustler too, taking money from dumb fans.

I agree with you about Manning and Warner, but let’s not forget about their receivers. More importantly, it’s the chemistry those guys have with their receivers that took years to develop. You need that trust to get the ball out quick. Say what you want about JR, but no one can deny that there’s been a revolving door at receiver since he was drafted. And then he gets rookies as starters? Can we really kill the guy for not having great chemistry with Murphy and DHB? Especially when DHB not only couldn’t catch a cold. JR gets a do-over.
    ———————-

Didn’t Manning have 2 rookies that stepped up this year and he had great chemistry with them? The only carry-over he has is Wayne. Warner thrived in his first year with the Cards. It didn’t take years. The difference between Manning/Warner and Russell is work ethic.. Keep grasping at straws..
    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Dude, are you nuts???? The day Manning walked in the door he had MARVIN HARRISON!! Ever heard of him? He’s been with Reggie Wayne, a Pro Bowler for what, 8 years? He also has Dallas Clark, another Pro Bowler who is widely considered to be the best receiving tight end in football. At least Garcon is a second-year player. He had one rookie in Austin Collie, but the guy can work in as a complimentary player. We started two rookies!!! One was DHB!! Did you see how much better Murphy was when he didn’t have to start with Chaz and JLH taking the opposing teams’ best corners? You really call that grasping at straws??
    —————————-

I don’t remember Harrison being on their team last year? Clark got hurt part way thru. If you think Manning doesn’t spend extra time with these young receivers then you are mistaken. Russell doesn’t do anything extra..

Did you see how much better Murphy was when both Grads and Frye started? You’re making my argument for me. Grads and Frye both outplayed Russell and showed better chemistry with all their receivers..

Peter King’s take on the trade:

“The Raiders get a rusher. Maybe. Kamerion Wimbley, the Browns’ first-round pick in 2006, got off to a great start rushing the passer for Cleveland, with 11 sacks in 16 games as a rookie. In the 47 games since, Wimbley’s had 15.5 sacks and too often gets caught in traffic, unable to consistently turn the corner and get to the passer. The Raiders paid a third-round pick for Wimbley on Sunday, a price I think is a little generous — except when you consider they dealt another pass-rusher, Derrick Burgess to New England for third- and fifth-round picks last year, and Wimbley is much younger than Burgess.”

    *******************************

So basically King thinks we paid too much, but not really when you consider what the Pats paid for Burgess.

    Chalk one up for Al!!!

It’s a team sport. Show up and work out with your teammates Jamarcus and you might even build some rapport with them. Plus you might even gain some of there respect. Also, maybe you could look at film together and get on the same page when you see break downs on the defensive side of the ball. Just thoughts. We want a winner. It’s time for Jamarcus to act like one.

Dude, how many times do we have to go over this??? JR and Grads did NOT play with the same supporting cast!! Did you get that? Chaz is the best WR we have and JR got to play with him for a half before a drop and two penalties got him benched. Bruce played with Chaz as the starter and Murphy coming in as a third WR. And after the Dallas debacle, DHB went to the bench and JLH came in. Think there’s any coincidence that the passing offense looked better after that? Did you see JR’s comeback drive against Denver? How did the JR-Chaz combo look then?

Al Davis is going to have to get rid of Russell. Wow. Think about that. First Russell hoses him in the contract negotiations, then Al doesn’t get anything out of him anyway, meaning Al’s early suspicions were correct. Why did Al cave into his demands in the first place? Al had the perfect excuse to just refuse to sign him, with the entire media on Al’s side (a rarity). I have an idea: “He’s a great playah, get over it”.
