Brooks’ mock: Suh to Raiders at No. 8

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, March 17th, 2010 at 4:45 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Conventional wisdom, if there is such a thing in terms of the draft, has it that the Raiders are out of the running for either of the prize defensive tackles.

Oklahoma’s Gerald McCoy and Nebraska’s Ndamukong Suh gone by the first three picks.

If Al Davis were looking to get one one of those two players to help plug a porous middle and join Tommy Kelly and Desmond Bryant, he would almost certainly have to trade up.

Bucky Brooks, a former Raiders defensive back and NFL.com correspondent, maps out a scenario where Suh could fall to the Raiders at No. 8 in his most recent mock draft.

If this were to happen, and Suh ends up being the call, Al Davis ought to offer him a job.

At the tail end of last season, Richard Seymour and Greg Ellis were singing Suh’s praises during casual conversation, believing him to be worthy of his considerable reputation.

His Big 12 title game performance against Texas was as dominant a game as I’ve seen from a defensive tackle in college football.

MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. (AP) Former NFL lineman Jon Runyan said Thursday that he’s willing to spend his own money to win his campaign for Congress in New Jersey.

The ex-Philadelphia Eagle retired from football this year to run as a Republican in New Jersey’s 3rd District, where his party was expecting a competitive race even before a football star well-known in the area threw his helmet in the ring.

His formal campaign launch is scheduled for Thursday.

He said Wednesday in an interview with several reporters about his background, ambitions and positions that he’s doing fundraising, but that he won’t rely solely on donors as he challenges John Adler, a first-term Democrat who already had $1.4 million in his campaign war chest by Dec. 31.

“If my money comes into play, it does. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t,” he said. “I’m going to do everything I can to win this campaign. I’m not in it to compete. I’m in it to win it.”

Runyan said the main reason he wants to run is to try to control federal government spending. He cited the legislation to overhaul health insurance as an example of what he sees as government trying to do too much.

“I don’t think that the way that Washington’s approaching it right now, by spending another big spending bill, they’re going to end up raising taxes – that doesn’t need to be done,” he said.

He said he favors allowing insurance companies to sell policies across state lines. That, he said, would reduce insurance costs and increase the availability of coverage without affecting taxpayers.

Ways to solve this team problems

Sign Mawae, Chester Pitts/Bobbie Williams and T.O/Holt, all these guys will cost us less then $10 mill this year and would give us the veteran leadership needed offensively (except for T.O)

    Draft these rookies.

    1. Trent Williams OT (a reach)
    2. Brandon Spikes MLB (a reach)
    3. Linval Joseph NT (a reach)
    4. Mitch Pietrus G (might drop)
    5. Roddrick Muckelroy LB (a reach)
    5. Trindon Holliday WR/KR/PR (might drop)
    7. Matt Clapp FB (a reach)

Except I would add Brad Hoover to your list and replace Terrell Owens with Muhsin Muhammad …

  • DKnight007

I don’t know what Bucky is smoking, cause there is no way in heck, Suh is falling to us at #8!

I do agree now that Seattle has overpaid for their apparent QB of the future in Whitehearst, they will NOT be drafting a QB like Clausen falls to them at #6 and they will NOT be trading up for either Bradford or Clausen, so they will be taking an OT to replace Walter Jones and since they had serious O-Line problems last year.

Muhsin Mohammad is as washed up as it gets, at least Torry Holt had 722 yards playing in Jacksonville and he said in Espn that at this stage of his career, he is open to mentor younger players and not be in the spot light.

According to NFL Fanhouse’s Nancy Gay, the 49ers and GM Scot McCloughan are cutting ties over what is being termed a “personal matter.”

“I’m fine and moving forward,” McCloughan said Thursday. The breakup is said to be by mutual agreement due to “longstanding personal issues.” The Niners will make an announcement later today, and director of player personnel Trent Baalke is expected to fill many of the GM duties. McCloughan could end up in Oakland, where his father was a scout for nearly three decades.

Didn’t think that question would be so tough, but I’d have to say Anthony Davis.

    ====================

Davis is looking like an interior lineman if he’s going to start early in the NFL. He’ll need work and polish, something he’s not known for.

The kid has red flags for his inconsistent technique, motivation and weight issues.

Not someone you want policing himself in Oaklands loose scheme.

If we were gonna take a flyer on a fat lazy lineman we could’ve done it last year with Smith.

maybe so, but we’re looking for a vet mentor. right? not a #1 WR

Moose caught 53 balls for 581 yards last year playing second fiddle to Steve Smith during the worst year of Jake Delhomme’s career. not bad imo

trumps anything we’ve had at WR the past 2 years!

I’ll take Trent Williams and install him day one at RT. “Unselfish, works hard.” Had great measurables at combine. Ran 2nd fastest 40 at 4.88 if Al’s interested.

Big,6-5, 315 and likely to be there even if Seattle takes Bulaga.

I think KC, who could use another lineman, goes Safety instead.

    Williams would work.

Scott McCloughan is garbage, he stinks, i dont even want him near the Raider facility. The only good think he does, he locks down good players for cheap but as far as free agency goes and drafting, this guy knows nothing. Look at their spending habits, Nate Clemons, Tully Banta Cain gone after give him huge contract, Michael Lewis. Nah, the guy knows nothing. If I am a 49er fan, I would want to give up one first rounder we got for Mcnabb, what they do, they sign Carr lol. 49er is a whack team.

Crabs had prima Donna written all over him and ove of the longest hold outs I can remember.
Passing on Orakpo makes more sense with Seymour on board, but man, DHB better improve ALOT this year.
I can’t see Suh getting past Tampa and or Detroit, but you’re right, its not guaranatee we’d take him.

  • El Tato

JaMarcus had to be weighting close to 300 pounds last season if 271 is “drop weight”

Still, his playing weight is 260, he should be able to reach 260 or even less if he works hard until the season starts

    =======================

Spent the picks in recent years on offensive finre power, now you need someone to help them achieve.

DMAC needs big lanes to sprint thru untocuhed so his speed can be maxed.

Russell has alway s held the ball too long and needs that extra 1/2 second in protection.

According to the Davis scheme the offense needs to help the run D.

  • RaiderRockstar

is it unreasonable to ask Russell to drop another 20 pounds by August?

  • Nnamdi21

Anyone see newly annointed KC Chief Romeo Crennel injure Eric Berry at his Tennessee pro day?

    Way to go Crennel!

I think they take Berry with their 1st rounder. He’s really really good, but if they do, that’ll leave a tackle for us to draft.

  • Nnamdi21

Don’t care how much Russell weighs long as he’s hitting the books and prepping like he should. If not, fug it. We’ll head into the season with whats his face, the can’t get a starting shot elsewhere guy.

Either Russell, does or he doesn’t and nothing we say is gonna change it.

Hope he’s serious and ready to become the leader and bad azz QB he’s supposed to be.

  • RaiderRockstar

    went to http://www.halls.md/body-mass-index/av.htm

    checked Russell’s BMI

    typed in 6’6″ 271 lbs

    24 year old male

    result:

    Body Description = Obese

“Your Weight is at the 91st percentile compared
to others of same Height and Age”

If you are at 50th percentile, you are close to the average weight.

At 90th percentile, your weight is greater than 90% of others.

  • VanHeathen

How is coming in at 271, after ‘allegedly’ weighing 260 at start of camp last year, getting in better shape?
So in reality if he was 275 last season, and ballooned up, he’s now back to 4 lbs under his playing weight last year…
That’s some SERIOUS conditioning…what a joke! Man, it never ends w/ this kid.

The niners play in the weakest division in the whole NFL, add to that they play in the weaker conference in the NFC, add to that they have one of the easiest schedule, add to that they have a good coach, with all that, they still weren’t a playoff team. As far as roster, their offense is Frank Gore and defense Patrick Willis, they have many weakens and they cant cover and Alex Smith had the worst third down percentage.

  • Nnamdi21

We should pounce on Pouncey in the 2nd if the’s there. I’d even move up for him.

Good afternoon (4:04pm here in Va), Raiders fans! How is everyone today?

Anyone have any thoughts on the likelihood of Al deciding to take Patrick Robinson, the CB out of FSU with the second round pick? Robinson ran a sub-4.4 today at his pro day… so he will get more attention now. I don’t want to use any of our first four picks on anything but the lines unless Spikes is there in the second. However, we never know what will happen, so what do y’all think?

  • SteveAlford21

    RRs,

First of all, howdy… how you doin today bro?

Secondly, BMI is total crap. When I got out of the Army, I was 5’10, 185. I had FOUR percent body fat. I want to give you a second for that to sink in. FOUR PERCENT BODY FAT. I had a lot of muscle on my frame and was in the best shape of my life.

I want to move up and get Suh.

However, if we HAVE TO pick at 8 and Suh, McCoy, and Okung are gone, I would say to take Iupati or Bulaga. I am somewhat concerned that Campbell won’t be a good bill of goods and is all measurables, but I wouldn’t cuss TOO MUCH if we took him. That having been said, I would prefer the other five guys that I mentioned… any of them in the order that I listed. I have to help a customer now, though… be back in a few.
