It’s weight and see on Russell

Willie Brown says JaMarcus Russell’s weight loss was “significant.”

Tim Kawakami reports through his Twitter account that Russell weighed in at 271.

Taken together, it makes those “Russell nearing three bills” rumors look on the mark.

None of this is going to go away until the Raiders make Russell available, and even then it’s doubtful anyone will cop to an exact weight.

None of this is going to matter, of course, if Russell begins completing passes all over the field at his first minicamp.

We’ll probably never know if Brown is telling the truth, and Kawakami isn’t about to reveal his source, and any unnamed source is to be viewed skeptically.

This wouldn’t be a problem if Russell had showed up weighing between 245 an 250 pounds.

Even the Raiders would have found a way to leak that information.

Good defense starts up front…not in the backfield.

As long as we employ linebackers known more for their coverage skills and less for their hitting….we better have some bosses up front that are hard to move.

eVeryone can’t be a pass rusher

    SnB,

You exagerate like a 9 year old pigtailed girl with braces. We’ve done nothing? What is Matt S, what is R Seymour? Nnamdi, Huff, Branch, Mitchell, Howard, Morrison? T Kelly we just added a edge rusher and wether you agree with the additions or not Warren was brought in to stop the run. They will do more this year as well the next ten years. They have always worked on this defense since I’ve been a fan f this team.

You are delirious with your own absession to get the player YOU deem necessary. Which is better than any player any coach or acout or personnel man in the NFLcan come up with as far as you’re cncerned. And until they get who YOU want they haven’t done anything.

You’re delusional!! you’ve never put together an NFL roster in your life yet you are better than any expert. Your too full of yourself.

    DE: Seymour
    DT: TK
    DT: Suh
    DE: Matt S

    Pass:

    That’s a Good DL!

    Draft Suh!

    Sorry “obsession”

I also like Dez Bryant a lot, and I think he can play Base End.

If you’re ignorant enough to think Warren wont play this year then I can’t help you. There is no way Warren is out of the league this year NO FREAKIN’ WAY!!

You might even be shocked raiderman99, what if he starts? lol They aren’t putting this much energy into Russell because he’s cute, get a freakin’ clue will ya’?

This organization is tied to him for the next 2 years as long as he demonstrates a desire to get better. And wether you like it, believe it, or agree with it that is exactly what he is doing.

So maybe while he’s starting you and Gradkowski can take a long slow trip across country. And stay there.

    ===================================================
No need to get hostile Priest. Supposedly, we both want the Raiders to succeed. I’m convinced Russell is a POS and you’re convinced he’s close to greatness. We’ll find out who is right soon enough.

What if Russell starts ? Here’s what: If JaMoron starts it’s going to be a very long, very dismal season.

I hope you’re wrong about the Raiders being tied to Russell for 2 more years. Why ? Because I want the Raids to win.

As far as taking a long slow cross country trip, I’d rather do that with Gradkowski than JaMoron anytime.

Don’t know why you dislike Gradkowski so much. I think it’s tough for you to accept that he’s a better QB than JaMoron even if he has less physical ability. But you’ll come around eventually and wonder how you ever thought JaMoron was on the cusp of greatness –when he’s out of the NFL.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

No, I stand pat. I have a big problem with the philosophy of focusing almost exclusively on pass rush and coverage.

Tell me where I am wrong about this team’s investment in run defense?

Seymour is about the only guy brought in “at the 11th hour when it was PAINFULLY obvious the run defense wasn’t competitive” so he could man the DE position.

Run defense is still terrible. Up the middle “my biggest complaint for years” has been addressed with 2nd rate talent.

Gerard Warren WILL NOT be back this year.
Kirk Morrison is on the outs ~ Raiders want him gone
Thomas Howard is on the outs
    Dez Bryant…ok, but he’s a 3-tech
    William Joseph….seriously

Who’s the run stuffer in the LB corps? Who’s the run clogger in the middle of the D-Line?

Especially for a defense that asks its linebackers to be more coverage oriented than gap fill/hard hitting oriented. Read “NO THUMPERS”

If the linebackers are going to be built more for covering running backs and TEs in coverage…that D-Line better be boss…and the DTs are not that

I have no complaints about the secondary. My only complaint is up the middle on this defense.

We have not stopped the run in 8 years. 150+ yda per game on the ground. You can’t win that way.

Priest, why are we always one of the 5 worst at stopping the run each year?

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

Raiders overrate their own talent too much.

    Where’s Justin Fargas?

    Terdell Sands?

    Andrew Walter?

    Stu Schweigart

    Gerard Warren?

These guys were starters here. Out of the league or fringe elsewhere.

It takes talent to win…and now EVERYONE has soured on the linebackers …..

Too many holes and no toughness up front to stop the run equals 5-11 or worse

Jets, Ravens, Steelers, Dolphins have had defenses that played well despite bad offenses….time for the Raiders to eliminate the excuses and start playing SMASHMOUTH physical football and not this finesse B.S

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

Plus a good defense keeps the score close which takes pressure off of a passing challenged offense.

The offense won’t get better until Russell, DMAC, Bush, Schilens, DHB and Murphy mature.

    Period. So build the defense

  • priesttj

    SnB,

At some point you must understand what run defense consist of, It’s very easy to pinpoint one reason and say if we fix this we’ll stop the run. In truth that is foolish thinking it’s just not that simple. Stopping the run is a comprehensive effort from the entire defense and it has to be consistent throughout the season to be a great run defense. There were games we played great run defense but it was outdone by several games in which we gave up a couple of long runs making an otherwise great defnsive effort look bad.

Like the Dallas game 3 runs totalling 145 yards while 20+ totalled 45 now is that bad run defense or lapses in gap control and attention to detail. I believe that is what was the real peoblem with this run defense last year just inconsistent. We could get King Kong at DT but if we don’t play well around him it doesn’t matter.

But I guess you will neve really understand that because you’ve been led to believe that it’s all about the DT’s but it just starts their. The rest of the defense has to be great in order for the defense to work as a unit……………………….period

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

    Gradkowski is no answer folks.

Russell and the other young players on offense simply have to play better

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

    Priest,

Those long runs count too. Teams keep running the ball because they know they will get a few big runs each year. They run because they know they can.

So why is the run defense awful each year?

The LBs are coverage 1st guys…and will continue to be. The DEs are pretty good and holding the edge.

Safeties seem to be pretty good

Warren and Kelly are no prescence underneath. They don’t make plays and that makes it hard for our undersized linebackers to make plays because they are gettign dealt every play.

Again, I’ve made my position clear as to why this run defense is awful….why do you think its awful? OR is it awful…perhaps just misunderstood…

If we only stopped a few big runs…..those count too!

  • priesttj

    Snb

Man you have gt to get a clue dude every team in this league has players that they cut who are out of the league. It’s not just the Raiders man it’s everyone. The average NFL career is 4-5 years long. You just have a lot to learn.

Are you saying Warren wont play in the NFL at all? come on say it if that’s what you mean because I gaurantee you he will.

    Yes it does.

    In CONVENTIONAL football.

In Raiderland, good defense starts on offense. Out score the oppenent and make them abandon the run at some point where your pass rush / coverage designed defense, specifically built for just such occasions, can play prevent instead.

  • priesttj

One hand washes the other if we scored more teams couldn’t run as much. I have said a thousand times why I think the run defense is bad. It’s a lack of discipline and tackling if you look at those long runs it’s because a guy get out of his GAP. Which has zero to do with the DT. If you understaood the scheme more you would be clear on it’s failures. Our DT’s are forcing the runs outside and fording the HB to bounce it. But he still gets huge yardage. That has nothing to do with a DT. THe DT gets a push but the HB gets through the hole if the LB doesn’t fill itis a long run. THe DT did his job but the LB gets caught up in the wash and the HB is on the 2nd level with the safety making the tackle.

IT’s the entire defense that has to stop the run Now if you see the DT’s getting blown off the ball then we have a problem at DT. Go back and watch any game you chose and tell me one game when our DT’s were getting blown off the ball all game.

In 2005, 25th against the run Kirk Morrison had 116 tackles.

In 2006 25th against the run. Kirk Morrison had 128 tackles.

In 2007, 31st against the run. Kirk Morrison had 120 tackles

In 2008, 31st against the run, Kirk Morison had 135 tackles

In 2009, 29th against the run. Kirk Morrison had 133 tackles.

Some people see that and go, “Oh! Man thank god for Morrison! He’s kicking butt!” and others see it and realize 90+ % of his tackles are 5-7 yds down field.

  • priesttj

    Nnamdi21,

Kirk is a drag down tackler he just doesn’t fill the hole he sits back and plays it safe. He needs to be more aggressive and shoot the gap especially against the stretch play but he never does he plays the piano and goes for the sideline. Now what happens if the HB cuts it back? well he now is in a pursuit position. When if h would get into the backfield and force you see a lot more TFL on his stats. He makes a lot of tackles but no plays. Now Rickey Brown is an aggressive MLB who’s looking to be disruptive and active in the backfield. It gives the defense a lot more minus plays to work with. It is really justa matter of styles. Kirk is not instinctive while Brown is very instinctive.

    Gilbert,

All is well Sir, and thank you for asking.

As for Al drafting Mays, Dunlap, Jason P, Best, or Campbell, I don’t think it will make me angry. I’m used to it by now.

  • RAIDERMAN99

Gradkowski might not be the answer.

    Russell definitely isn’t the answer.

There are only two things that Russell has done decently in the NFL.

1)Take a beating and not be injury prone.

    2) Early in his career he seemed to have the ability to throw the ball away and avoid interceptions or large losses.

He still deserves credit for point number one but sadly regressed and turned into a turnover machine last year.

In all honesty, I was happy when the Raids drafted JaMoron. Didn’t see him play that much in college but was impressed by his potential from the limited exposure I saw of him and his highlight reel.

Now after 3 years of watching this turkey, I just want him gone.

What’s funny is that I became certain Russell was a turkey in probably the best Raider win in recent years.
I’m referring to the ‘Chill, we got this’ win against TB. Russell threw a pick late in that game that convinced me he sucked. Up the right sideline, off target and a bad decision. Fortunately Bush and the Raids still came back to win.

Similarly, last year against Philly in Rusell’s best win he screwed up a play so badly that I had to resign myself that this kid will never get it done. Chose to ignore a wide open reciever and blew a huge opportunity for the Raids.

Still there are those who insist Russell is going to turn it around and realize his potential.

Man, I wish you were right, but it’s just not going to happen.

The sooner the Raids acknowledge Russell is a collossal failure and move on, the better for the franchise.

That being said, if I have to suffer through another year of JaMoron, I will. But in the meantime build an offensive line so his successor doesn’t get killed.

Some of its scheme related and some of its just bad play and bad calls. If he’s playing it safe, its not working were getting burned with big plays nearly every game.

He simply overuns plays, gets wired to blockers and misses on an island too often.

If he’s a big cover guy we need pressure so he and Howard can have another 6 picks in one year.

  • silvernblack209

my pick is Taylor Mays; a freak of nature, and I don’t care if we got enough safety’s already, players like this aren’t around very often in a draft, so we take him and let the bodies hit the floor!

  • LhayeS37

if jamarcus can’t change plays at the line it doesn’t matter how much he weighs or who is on the o-line.i just hpoe cable is not the play caller.did they get rid of hackett?i hope so.it is 2010 al davis….how about bubble screens, draws, more athletic o lineman.you draft the female wr-heyward bey,so throw the broad a flanker screen, and see if he can catch it….silvernblack209 says taylor mays?in the 5th round maybe…not early,he stunk his senior year.another overrated trojan

  • LhayeS37

rolando mcclain is a better mlb today than morrison.

by the way if the raiders played modern coverages, like 2 deep zones, thomas howard would have 10 sacks and 4-6 picks every year.he will sign somewhere else and be all pro
