    Morning Nation! *repost*

from Dwhites TwitterGood morning from Orlando, where I’m covering the NFL owner’s meeting. On deck: Raiders coach Tom Cable at 7:15 a.m. Eastern time.

Cable says Kamerion Wimbley will play OLB, not DE, at strongside.

Team will kick tires on some free agent RTs, consider them in draft. Obvious position of need.

Won’t give JaMarcus’ weight, but says he’s doing what they ask and looks forward to QB competition.

On Hue Jackson’s role: “Score points.” And JaMarcus hasn’t tinkered with throwing motion.

Khalif Barnes would start at RT if season was today, Matt Shaughnessy at RDE.

Cable on uncertain status in January: “I felt bad for that TV lady who had to stand in the rain at the gate.”

    ……………………………

Hey JB is Jerry going to report anything today or just do his chat thingy?

Tom Cable at NFL owners meeting:

“Khalif Barnes would start at RT if season was today, Matt Shaughnessy at RDE.”

    —————————————————-

I said in a previous post that I thought Khalif Barnes was going to have his opportunity to show he can be our RT (because he is a Cable pick, because he was injured last season, because is resigned while Green is gone, because he had a recent interview on Raiders official web – same with Shaughnessy-,…)

I cant remember who was, but somebody here referred to my post as “vomit”

if the NFL ever expands to the mid-Pacific the franchise would have to be named the

Oren O’Neal had an awful knee injury in August 2008 and the Raiders rushed him back too soon. Placed on IR again in October 2009 with an ankle injury.

not durable. I’ll take Brad Hoover and keep OO as a reserve until he’s 100 percent healthy & ready to contribute. Lawton & Reece are terrible lead blockers!

  24. hwnrdr Says:

Can you imagine ESPN trying to say that? Haha…They will probably jsut shorten it to the Humus’…
Also, can you imaging Roger Goodell on Draft day?

    Cable at NFL owners meeting

I just spent the past hour sitting next to Raiders coach Tom Cable for the AFC coaches breakfast at the NFL owners meeting in Orlando.

My first thought: if quarterback JaMarcus Russell ate that light, he’ll get his weight down in no time.

Of course, JaMarcus was the No. 1 topic of discussion that stayed alive through one wave of reporters after the next. Cable stood by his line without wavering:

Russell is there for offseason workouts, he’s doing the things being asked of him, and he will have to compete for the starting job with Bruce Gradkowski and Charlie Frye.

What happens from here is all up to JaMarcus, who will either make a career comeback or go down as a bust.

“I think that it’s like anything in life, you can bring that on yourself,” Cable said. “If you want to not let that be who you are, then you need to do something about it. So you change.

“The fact that he’s there working is really important right now. That’s the biggest step right now, and that’s a big step.”

More on that in tomorrow’s paper. Here’s Cable on a bunch of other stuff …

** Kamerion Wimbley will play strongside linebacker in the Raiders’ 4-3 defense — the position he played in the Browns’ 3-4 defense before he was traded to Oakland.

Cable likes Wimbley’s size and ability to rush the passer. He also likes how Trevor Scott developed as a weakside linebacker last season. Not sure where restricted free agent Thomas Howard fits in now, but we’ll see — and no, they are not switching to a 3-4 defense.

** Back to Russell, really quick. Asked for his weight, Cable punted by saying it was premature at this time of year to discuss it and, besides, he hasn’t weighed him.

I’d be stunned — stunned — if he really weighed 271 pounds, as reported. Stunned.

** Speaking of strongside linebackers, Ricky Brown will sign his restricted free agent contract today, a second-round tender, according to a league source.

** Cable said that, if the season started today, Khalif Barnes would be the starting right tackle with Erik Pears involved in the competition.

However, the Raiders are also looking at free agents on the market as well as this year’s draft class.

** Forget the two-back system of years past: Cable wants Darren McFadden or Michael Bush to become an everydown back.

That’s one reason they released Justin Fargas. Time for the young kids to take over.

“We’ll move forward with those two guys,” Cable said. “I think it will help both of them that they will get more work. The question with (Darren) is, now that he’s healthy, can he be an everydown back? And I think he can be.”

** Cable better defined the role of new offensive coordinator Hue Jackson, saying Paul Hackett will remain responsible for Russell’s position work.

    Jackson’s job?

“Score more points,” Cable said. “Plain and simple. With him, it’s not just one guy. He’s got to get 11 guys on the same page and moving in the right direction.

“We need to score at least two touchdowns and a couple field goals a game. If we can do that, if we can get better play at quarterback, we’ll be fine.”

More to come, have a meeting to catch …

    -David White (SF Gate)

    ***

so go ahead and cross “running back” off your draft wish-list fellas.

Paul Hackett isn’t going anywhere! what a relief …

If anybody gets traded, seems like Thomas Howard (not Kirk Morrison) would be the likely choice after saying Scott will stay at WLB, Brown will compete at SSLB & Wimbley was acquired to play SSLB

  32. hwnrdr Says:

Rockstar, I would say the same as you did, but I wasn;t too sure about Oneal’s status and that is why I asked that. Do you think with a real NT that are LB core can roam free and become better? I always said, along with most of you on here…block for the qb, run the ball and stop the run…we will get there.

  33. RaiderRockstar Says:

    thanks ray!

LMN: I need your pick bro

  34. RaiderRockstar Says:

Do you think with a real NT that are LB core can roam free and become better?

    ***

Hwnrdr: Here is our LB corps

Morrison, Howard, Wimbley, Scott, Brown, Nixon, Norris

Ekejiuba & Condo too (if you include ST)

    not a bad unit IMO

I think a real NT could make this entire defense better, not just the DL or LB’s. the DB’s would benefit as much as anyone

  35. 408RAIDER Says:

    per dWhite
Darren McFadden and Michael Bush will compete for RB job, and Cable wants one to be everydown guy.

So does that mean McSkinny gets the start cuz he’s a 1st rounder??

  36. r8eray Says:

Let’s get that fat fukc Cody in the 2nd!

  37. hwnrdr Says:

    M, you’re on a roll this morning…LOL
I’m hearing names like Russell Okung (which will probably be gone by #8, or so they say), Anthony Davis, Suh (although I expect him to be top 2) and that Bruce Cambell cat…
I hope its not Cambell…I remember someone posting on here asking Campbell the question of “Why did you have to run the 40?” Haha…maybe he wants to be a Riader…maybe…

  38. RaiderRockstar Says:

408: Cable said that DMC can be an every-down back (if he can stay healthy)

sounds like he’ll have every opportunity to win the starter job, like Russell & Heyward-Bey

Having said that – I still think Gradkowski, Bush & Murphy could be starting ahead of the “big three” come Week 1 of the regular season

  39. hwnrdr Says:

You know, been a season ticket holder for awhile now (and still haven’t renewed yet)…If we do get a real NT, I may renew through 2011…
When our D can stop the run at least…I believe that alone may propel us into at least competing for the playoffs!

  40. r8eray Says:

    Our 3 #2’s beat out our 3 #1’s!! lol

  41. RaiderRockstar Says:

With S a “position of strength,” never mind the Taylor Mays rumors.

    -David White (twitter)

Cable called safety a “position of strength”, huh?

Huff came out and said he’s been told that his job is safe for 2010.

cross Berry & Mays off the draft “wish list” too fellas.

MBush? That young man has gotta want it. Is he reluctant because he only gets 4th round money?

  48. El Tato Says:

I think thats the best way to finally know what we have in McFadden, the guy is too anxious when he plays so he doesnt wait for the holes to be there. ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

    From Nat. Ftbl Post:

    Marshall Newhouse OG, Texas Christian
    NFP Grade: 6.3

    Scouting Report:
    Marshall Newhouse: No. 70, OG, 6-3, 320

A short, squatty lineman who has three years of starting experience at left tackle, Newhouse lacks ideal length and doesn’t possess the skill set needed to play on the blind side in the pros. Yet he displays natural bend in his stance and does a good job firing off the ball in the run game, creating leverage on contact and getting a push off the ball. He isn’t heavy-handed and doesn’t stick to blocks but has some in-line power and will create creases inside. He lacks ideal footwork and overall range in pass protection. Newhouse doesn’t display a technically sound kick-step and allows his base to get too narrow out of his stance. He struggles to reach the corner vs. speed and has a tendency to open up his hips and lunge into blocks.

He displays the ability to sit into his stance and anchor on contact but can lose his balance when engaged. He exhibits only average redirect skills in space but consistently fails to mirror opposing linemen and too easily falls off blocks on the edge. Overall, he has some upside as an offensive guard prospect because of his in-line power and ability to anchor inside. Newhouse isn’t functional in space but with time could end up playing for an NFL team.

    Grade: 6.3

TCU T/G Marshall Newhouse is visiting Oakland this week.

  59. hwnrdr Says:

You think he will be our #8?
Was he a strated at TCU? TCU if I remember correctly was on that debate about playing for the Nat’l Champs.

  60. jhill Says:

    Yeah, I gotcha RRS …

But with Cable’s comment plus Barnes’ interview on Raiders.com, I’m pretty sure he’ll be in the starting 5. Either at G or tackle.

I agree that Henderson is going to be the LT, so I just don’t see us going Oline at 8. Maybe rd 2 or 3.

  61. Raider O Says:

I don’t think so Hwnrdr, he is projected to be a 3-4th RD pick.

  62. El Tato Says:

Newhouse was seen as an OG prospect despite he was a LT in College, but at the Senior Bowl he surprised and some teams consider him an OT prospect now again. Maybe we are considering him as a RT.

As far as I know, the Raiders have shown interest in this mid-round OL prospects:

    - RT Nic Richmond (TCU)
    - OG Jeff Byers (USC)
    - LT Rodger Saffold (Indiana)

  63. r8eray Says:

I’d rather draft Brandon Carter in the late rounds!

Thats EXACTLY what I thought after reading Barnes interview, thats why I am so intrigued about this year #8 pick.

Barnes said he was told he would compete at RT from the beginning (not LT and RT like the past year) and also that he practised some at OG by the end of last season.

Cable says JaMarcus is taking “a big step”
Posted by Michael David Smith on March 23, 2010 10:09 AM ET
Oakland Raiders coach Tom Cable said today at the annual league meetings that quarterback JaMarcus Russell is on the right path by participating in the team’s voluntary workouts.

“The fact that he’s there working is really important right now,” Cable said, per David White of the San Francisco Chronicle. “That’s the biggest step right now, and that’s a big step.”

But it’s not a big enough step to guarantee Russell a spot in the starting lineup. Cable said Russell will have to compete throughout the offseason with Bruce Gradkowski and Charlie Frye. Last year Russell started nine games and had a passer rating of 50.0, Gradkowski started four games and had a passer rating of 80.6, and Frye started three games and had a passer rating of 65.3.

Also worth noting from Cable’s session with the media: He declined to answer when asked how much Russell weighs, neither confirming nor denying the report that Russell weighs 271.

  73. 408RAIDER Says:

    yo 4eva :P

  74. r8eray Says:

Vegas…..what up brother? Where you been at?

  75. RaiderRockstar Says:

you don’t draft a tackle 8th overall just for “competition” , especially not a right tackle.

running back & safety is a dead issue.

Russell will get another crack at QB.

drafted DHB & Murphy last year.

    Miller at TE.

    Seymour & ShoNasty at DE.

    Kelly at one DT spot.

secondary is awesome, even though Cable says we’re looking for a corner.

8th pick = best available DT (hopefully Dan Williams), Spoon or Haden

I don’t see McClain being the pick. Spoon has “Raider speed”

  76. M Lonetree Says:

The body of evidence points out that our dear ol’ HC is absolutely underwhelming as an evaluator of talent. Particularly with his supposed realm of expertise, the O-line.
If I said prayers for such things I would pray that no one listens to the Cable Guy when choices of O-line FAs and O-line Draftees are being made.

What happens from here is all up to JaMarcus, who will either make a career comeback or go down as a bust.

—”The Raiders plan to use newly acquired Kamerion Wimbley at strong-side linebacker in their 4-3 defense. They aren’t going to a 3-4. While it’s a good way to get as much pass rush on the field as possible, 4-3 outside linebacker isn’t a position Wimbley has played at the college or pro levels. It also brings Thomas Howard’s future into serious question, and means that Matt Shaughnessy is in line to start at left defensive end, assuming they don’t draft Jason Pierre-Paul”—

—”Coach Tom Cable said Tuesday that he wants an every-down player to emerge when the Raiders open their running back job to competition this offseason. “We’ll move forward with those two guys,” Cable said of Michael Bush and Darren McFadden. “It will help both of them that they will get more work. The question with (Darren) is, now that he’s healthy, can he be an every-down back? I think he can be.” Bush would be much better suited for a lead back role, but McFadden is the obvious in-house favorite due to his draft status”—

  155. RNOraiderFan Says:

If the Raiders could move down and get Dan Williams DT and then in the 2nd get Charles Brown OT I would be thrilled. They should also look at Mike Johnson OG in the 3rd and Ciron Black OT in the 4th or 5th. That would make a great draft. If they move down in the first they should get an extra 3rd or trade Howard for an extra 3rd and with the extra 3rd Daryl Washington MLB. Now thats what I call progress!
“Give me linemen or give me death!”

  156. RaiderRockstar Says:

so it’s pretty obvious that Mark Davis & Amy Trask will run the team when Al Davis finally steps down or passes away …

hopefully they’ll be smart enough to hire a GM!

  157. jhill Says:

Davis: I’ve always had my eye on Seymour because it’s tough to play the right end in a three-man line. We’ve had one great player do that _ Lyle Alzado. He’s someone that we’ve been watching for years and I never thought we’d get a shot at him.

    ——————————————————-

So since RDE was Seymour’s position, does that mean he is now a DT with Shaugnessy starting at RDE?

  158. Dakota Says:

If you guys haven’t learned yet; at this point prior to the draft, whatever information comes out of the mouth of anyone linked to the Raiders about said draft can either be dismissed as B.S. or you can use that information to determine that they are going to do the complete opposite of what they say…

  159. RNOraiderFan Says:

If the Raiders need a GM, I’m availible. I come from a couching background and I know I could run a draft better then anyone on the staff right now.

In fact, if Clausen goes in the first 8 picks then Buffalo might grab him 9th overall (they need a 3-4 NT)

Denver is also a likely destination. no guarantee Jamal Williams comes back from injury as a dominant run stopping force (he turns 34 next month)

  163. RNOraiderFan Says:

Thats my point RR trade down in the first round to get an extra 3rd and still get Dan Williams.

  170. RaiderRockstar Says:

The two defensive ends play on opposite outside edges of the defensive line. Their function is to attack the passer or stop offensive runs to the outer edges of the line of scrimmage (most often referred to as “containment”). The faster of the two is usually placed on the right side of the defensive line (quarterback’s left) because that is a right-handed quarterback’s blind side.

    Example: Peppers is a RDE

Traditionally, defensive ends are in a three-point stance, with their free hand cocked back ready to “punch” the offensive lineman, or in a “two-point stance” like a linebacker so they can keep containment. Some defensive ends play the position due to their size; they close down their gap so the running back has no hole to run through. Other ends play the position due to their speed and agility; they are used to rush the quarterback. These ends can time the snap of the ball in order to get a jump on the rush.

Most of the time it is the job of the defensive end to keep outside or contain, which means that no one should get to their outside; they must keep everything to the inside. The defensive ends are fast for players of their size, often the fastest and smallest players on the defensive line. They must be able to shed blockers to get to the ball. Defensive ends are also often used to cover the outside area of the line of scrimmage, to tackle ball carriers running to the far right or left side, and to defend against screen passes. Since the creation of zone blitz defenses in the late 1990s, defensive ends have sometimes been used in pass coverages, dropping back to cover routes run close to the line of scrimmage.

  171. RNOraiderFan Says:

I wish the Raider would get rid of Howard and keep Morrison. I stil like Morrison alot, I think he is better suited to play SLB and could also fill in as a back up to MLB. Howard is over rated, the guy dissapears during games and then Bam! one big hit and everyone loves the guy.

i’ll let you know if you qualify for the Raiders

as long as you looked good coming off the softball tournament bus, Al Davis might have interest

  174. AlDavis Stopwatch Says:

Based on Cable’s comment it supports what many are saying in that we may trade up to grab Suh. So far this offseason DT is a position that has been subtracted without a plan in place to fix it (see G Warren).

We cut Green but signed Barnes and moved him over. This will also be a draft target for 2nd or 3rd rnd. Same as the way ILB is being handled with Ricky Brown being in house.

Al will line up two mammoth DT’s this year. Kelly and a high draft pick.

  175. Dakota Says:

    Jhill,

So far he said we may look at tackles in the draft and that safety is a position of strength, which means we will not draft a tackle, and we are targeting Taylor Mays.

  176. RNOraiderFan Says:

Thats right RR, I played DE in H/S and my job was always contain except one play called lightning where the RLB would take contain and I would shoot the b gap on a stunt. I loved that play! But most of the time is was boring old contain.

  193. Dakota Says:

    Jhill,

Cable? I am sure Cable wants an o-linemen…he probably wanted one last year too, but he has no clue what Al is going to do. Just as Kiffin said, I give Al input, but I don’t know what he does with it!

Al will draft the player, and Cable will be handed a sheet stating what he is to say about the pick in interviews.

Which player Al has his eyes on is the real question, and I have not the slightest idea. After the DHB pick last year, I am down to just giving out what player I want…Anthony Davis.

  194. RNOraiderFan Says:

I think Al Davis thinks he has already solved the OL and DL problems.
    DL Wimbley, Seymour, Kelly, Shaunassy
OL Henderson, Gallery, Satele,3-5 draft pick, Barnes
So now he can go with a flashy player. We are doomed!
Mabey he will go with MLB Mcclain, I would be alright with that.

  195. RaiderRockstar Says:

    Shaugnessy-NT-Kelly-Seymour
    Scott-Morrison/Brown-Wimbley

Bryant is a backup for Kelly.
Joseph is a backup for the new NT (whoever that will be)

thats what the lineup would look like if the season started today.

Kirk Morrison would be wise to sign his tender, join his teammates and start bulking up. He barely beat out Ricky Brown last year and no other club has brought him in for a visit (yet). Rey Lewis (for whatever reason) has a healthy respect for Capt Kirk. Kirk would be wise to go train with him at some point this offseason. Learn some of the tricks to the trade and improve his ability to shed blockers

  198. Dakota Says:

    Bo,

That is what I think too. I certainly hope Nessy is LDE and Seymour is RDE (moving to DT on passing downs) with Kelly at DT with our shiny new NT draft pick yet to be named lining up next to him.

  199. RaiderRockstar Says:

The strongside linebacker (SLB) is often nicknamed “Sam” for purposes of calling a blitz. Since the strong side of the offensive team is the side on which the tight end lines up, or whichever side contains the most personnel, the strongside linebacker usually lines up across from the tight end. Often the strongside linebacker will be called upon to tackle the running back on a play, because the back will be following the tight end’s block. He is most often the strongest linebacker, at the least he possess the ability to withstand, shed, and fight off blocks from a TE or a FB blocking the backside of a pass play. The linebacker should also have strong safety abilities in pass situation to cover the tight end in man on man situations. He should also have considerable quickness to read and get into coverage in zone situations.

The weakside linebacker, or “Will”, must be the fastest of the three, because he is often the one called into pass coverage. He is also usually chasing the play from the backside, so the ability to maneuver through traffic is a necessity for Will. Will usually aligns off the line of scrimmage at the same depth as Mike. Because of his position on the weakside, Will does not often have to face large interior linemen one on one unless one is pulling. In coverage, Will often covers the back that attacks his side of the field first in man coverage, while covering the weak flat or hook/curl areas in zone coverage.

I like how Davis and co are looking at guys who can do more than one. They’ve always been big on hybrids and I like how they have not only Scott for a LB / DE but snagged Kamerion to do the same thing.

i agree, i dont think morrison was all that good. he amassed good tackling numbers, but when your defense is on the filed for 75% of the game, someone is going to make tackles. i would not be hurt to see him go. he takes very poor angles and misses a lot of tackles. also, howard when allowed to run blitz would make a few plays in the backfield.

Yeah, why isn’t ANYONE offering these guys a contract if they’re so frickin great? You know why…it’s because THEY SUCK!!! I’ve been saying that consistently (I know nobody cares blah, blah, blah), but the fact remains. NOBODY WANTS THEM. At least NOBODY wants to pay them, because gee whiz, other teams in the NFL are smart and kinda know what they are doing, but to the Raiders “oh, we gotta have these guys, after all we need to sign everybody that brought us 5 and freakin’ 11 last year…”

I could care less how these two overpaid, can’t get in the right gap to save their lives, celebrate like they just won the Superbowl when they actually do their jobs and tackle somebody, losers, feel about their abilities, but guess what? The league sees you fopr what you both are; emergency backups at best. VBut the Raiders…oh no…these guys are great…

This is why we’ll end up with double digit losses again; refusing to address the fact that the current team that gave you 5-11 will give you guess what? 5-11 (if we’re lucky).

  327. hellsbells Says:

The sturdy DT is not a big playmaker as a pass rusher and doesn’t rack up sacks like some of his competition at the position, but Williams is a huge part of the Tennessee defence. His play up front allows smaller LB like leading tackler Rico McCoy (6’1”, 220lbs) flow to the ball and rack up tackles.

  328. hellsbells Says:

With only 6.5 career sacks, his ability to get to the QB is a question mark but his 15 career QB hurries indicates that he can collapse a pocket and get pressure. There is no question about his hustle though as he puts himself in a position to at least be a 330lbs obstacle, even if he doesn’t necessarily possess the athletic ability, speed or breakdown to make tackles in space and corral smaller, faster players. No, Williams’ game is all about taking up space and eating blockers, which is why he is held in such high regard despite his deficiencies. Williams knows his limitations and plays to his strengths, keeping his game simple if unspectacular. When left single blocked, Williams possess the strength and nasty demeanour to wreak havoc. His stack and shed ability is very good, allowing him to break free in time to make the play at the line of scrimmage.

  329. hellsbells Says:

I listed him as a mid first round pick in my first mock of the year but eventually took him off when the season started as he had a bit of a slow start to the year stat wise and the multitude of fantastic players at the position. His play of late has him rising once again and he appears to have put the ankle injury far behind him. He’s a pretty safe pick as far as DT go thanks to his very simple game and the explosion of 3-4 defences will have someone taking an early flyer on him to plug into the middle of their D.

  330. DMAC Says:

PROJECTION: Pouncey is an efficient center with plenty of upside. He is a good enough athlete who can play all inside positions. Is technical sound with solid work effort. Has all the tools needed to succeed at the next level.

An late riser up the draft boards, a mid first to early second round selection.

Perfect fit: Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, Oakland Raiders, New Orleans Saints

  332. hellsbells Says:

Overall, Terrence Cody is as good as any other nose tackle prospect to come out of college in recent memory. He has consistently drawn double teams from opposing running games at every other level of football and is a beloved teammate. He gets plenty of praise from other players on the football field and in the locker room. His character questions have been put to rest over the last four years as he has worked hard in the classroom to keep himself eligible and overcome problems that plagued him as a youth. He may not be an every down player but his ability to obstruct blocking schemes and allow for other players to go unblocked and make plays can be priceless for a defense.
