Report: Raiders inquire about trading for Eagles QB McNabb
By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, March 24th, 2010 at 5:01 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Rich Gannon was 33 when the Raiders signed him as an unrestricted free agent after a four-year run with the Kansas City Chiefs ended in 1999.
It didn’t take long for Gannon to assert himself as the Raiders unquestioned starting quarterback and make people forget about Jeff George, Donald Hollas and Wade Wilson.
Gannon earned Pro Bowl honors four straight seasons and was the league MVP for the 2002 season.
Perhaps, then, it makes sense to learn of the Raiders of approaching the Philadelphia Eagles about a trade for quarterback Donovan McNabb.
The news comes from Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports in a story that says the Raiders and Buffalo Bills have contacted the Eagles about trading for McNabb.
Eagles coach Andy Reid said at the NFL owners meeting in Orlando, Fla., earlier this week that he has been contacted by teams about all three of his quarterbacks, including Kevin Kolb and Michael Vick.
“We’ll go back and look through those [talks] and think through them a little bit once we’re away from this situation here,” Reid said. “[There is] nothing that, right now, that I can jump up and down about. But there has been some interest. … I’m listening to things out there. I’m not saying I’m doing anything. I’m just keeping my ears open, which we do on every player. This is no different.”
That has helped fuel the speculation, which is running rampant about now.
The Philadelphia Inquirer cited a league source in reporting that the St. Louis Rams are offering the Eagles a second-round draft pick (No. 33 overall) and free safety Oshiomogho Atogwe for McNabb.
A Rams source told NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora that there is nothing to that report. Later, Rams general manager Billy Devaney told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the Inquirer report is “utterly ridiculous” and that he hasn’t spoken with the Eagles about any of his players.
Make of it what you will. The move makes sense from the Raiders standpoint if coach Tom Cable and managing general partner Al Davis aren’t sold upon JaMarcus Russell, Bruce Gradkowski or Charlie Frye as the starter for next season.
Cable certainly isn’t sold upon any of the three as the unquestioned starter, saying it’s a full, wide-open competition come training camp. Trading for McNabb could change that in an instant.
The thinking also could go along the lines of bringing in McNabb so that he can give the Raiders the best chance of succeeding this year and asking him to help develop Russell.
It’s worth noting that McNabb had flattering things to say about Russell a few days before the Eagles played the Raiders at the Coliseum last season and went out of his way after the game to speak with Russell.
“Not all the negative aspects of what’s been going on should fall on JaMarcus because it’s a team game,” McNabb said in a conference call with Raiders beat writers four days before the Raiders beat McNabb and the Eagles.
McNabb said that Russell’s progress has been retarded by the high turnover in coaches, offensive coordinators, play-callers and players during his first three seasons.
It’s a tough situation for him,” McNabb said in the conference call. “I’m sure that he’s going to do what he has to do in order to pull himself out of it, and just make sure the guys understand that he’s putting in the effort as well.”
Cable said Tuesday at the owners meeting that Russell is putting in the required effort and that things are going as planned. Maybe so, but that’s coming from the same coach who pulled Russell from games twice last season and, ultimately, benched him for the final seven games.
The Raiders aren’t allowed to comment on a player under contract to another team, so there’s nothing from their camp about the McNabb-to-the-Raiders stories. Two Raiders employees said that they were unaware of the Raiders contacting the Eagles about McNabb.
McNabb was the second pick of the 1999 NFL draft by the Eagles. He has amassed 32,873 yards and 216 touchdowns passing, with only 100 interceptions. The Eagles have reached the playoffs eight times and the Super Bowl once on his watch.
The reports of McNabb being shopped by the Eagles prompted him to respond on his blog on yardbarker.com.
“I was asked to respond to statements made at the NFL owners meetings that the Eagles would entertain offers to trade any of their three QBs,” McNabb said. “Here is my response: My position hasn’t changed. I’ve said all along that I would like to win a Super Bowl and finish my career in Philadelphia.
“I understand the situation well and just hope whichever direction the Eagles decide to go in, they do it quickly. I think that would be best for me, Kevin, Michael, the Eagles, and any other teams involved. No matter what happens, I’ve already begun preparing to have an outstanding season in 2010.”
Last season, McNabb passed for 3,553 yards and 22 touchdowns. He completed 60.3 percent of his passes, with 10 interceptions.
By comparison, Russell, Gradkowski and Frye passed for 2,875 yards and 10 touchdowns. The trio completed 52.8 percent of their passes, with 18 interceptions.
Any team trading for McNabb would inherit his contract, which expires after next season. He also is due a $6.2 million roster bonus in May. In other words, it’s likely that the Raiders or another team that trades for him first would attempt to work out a long-term contract.
Russell’s contract calls for him to earn $9.45 million in 2010. Of that figure, $3 million is guaranteed whether he is on the opening-day roster or not.

JaWalrus SUCKS!!!!!!
March 24th, 2010 at 5:06 pm
No thanks. I would rather take the stats on D when the Raiders play the Rams. That’s if McNabb can stay healthy long enough. The Raiders may need to play the Rams week on in order to make sure they get a shot at him before he gets injured.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:06 pm
Get someone in here to play Q!

Keep the name trolly troll. You obviously want it more than I do. Keep it.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:08 pm
Am hearing a rumor from a guy with inside sources who says McNabb could be a Raider tonite. Davis approving the idea pending McNabb wanting to be a Raider, that he’s talking with players/staff to gauge whether he wants in. And that if McNabb comes in Davis will go after TO to reunite, something more for McNabb to think about in terms of the deal.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:11 pm
mcnabb is probably overrated to some degree. overrated in the degree that people talk of him as a hall of fame talent. i’d say he’s more in the hall of very good qb with a solid and distinguished career. hall of whatever though, i’d take him in place of any of the 3 guys we currently have in a heart beat. i’d gladly give a 2nd rounder and god, even throw in routt or captain delusional too for him.
it would suck for bruce since i liked what he brought to the team in the little time he had, but that’s the way it goes i guess. not always fair.
frye? talk about empty numbers and jamarcus? well, isn’t he just a natural disaster…
March 24th, 2010 at 5:12 pm
McNabb was the second pick of the 1999 NFL draft by the Eagles. He has amassed 32,873 yards
——————————————————
Hmmm. McNabb’s career yards total is about what our attendance average will be if JaJackintheBox starts in the season opener.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:13 pm
McNabb is a chunky soup eating derelict that folds up like a lawn chair come post season, Fk him..
The end.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:14 pm
Anyone who says they wouldn’t give a 1st rnd pick to get a player of McNabbs calibre just doesn’t understand this sport. Start watching knitting it’s more your speed.
That kind of talent is rare and very di9fficult to come by, that’s what Russell should apire to become. A few years with DMc and then the rest with Russell and it changes EVERYTHING………….period
March 24th, 2010 at 5:17 pm
Not overly jazzed about seeing McNabb come here.

DMAC for Mcnabb, even though I think used properly DMAC is a game changer but you can’t get something for nothing

Dragging people here who don’t want to be here kicking and screaming is not going to turn this team around. Al, your line sucks. Your defense sucks. Your organization has no cohesiveness whatsoever. Your coaches hate each other. It only takes 3 years to rebuild in this league. Considering your mother’s longevity, you’ve got about 20 years left. Rebuild, Al. No veteran is going to help this team right now, except for maybe 5 veteran offensive linemen and a veteran HC with a winning record in this league.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:27 pm
McNabb is a winner.
Andy Reid has always passed the ball and has never developed a running attack around McNabb.
pull the trigger. A Proven vetran leader/ winner for the 8th overall pick makes great sense in oakland. Al & Company have consitently missed at the top of the draft for the past 6 years

You may be right here Priest. I’ve had mixed feelings about this, but as long as JR stays here I can live with it.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:28 pm
McNabb certainly has his pluses and minuses. I don’t know about him being here. Thanks IT Dept for getting rid of that garbage!
March 24th, 2010 at 5:29 pm
If Donovan comes, Jamarcus goes. Simple as that.
No way do you pay Russell $9 million, Donovan’s $12 million (and he wants an extension) and Bruce’s 1.7 is guaranteed as well.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:29 pm
The Raiders keep proving why they are the worst team in professional sports, and their fans continue to fall in line like lemmings and prove they are easily the dumbest fans in all of sports. I’ll ask you braniacs again…What can McNabb do here without an offensive line?
March 24th, 2010 at 5:30 pm
Vegas,
McNabb, or Bruce?
March 24th, 2010 at 5:31 pm
I’m not a McNabb fan but I’m also not a fan of the current QB situation so I’m all for it. Whether anybody likes it or not, the guy has produced and though he may never win a Superbowl, hes had an impressive career and with the way things have gone for the Raiders, we could use ANYBODY worth a damn! as we won’t be very successful without a good QB so trade for him. I don’t have a problem with it.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:31 pm
Real Madden Raider… The offense is lead by proven loosers right now… other than that there are a bunch of kids with no idea of what it takes to win.
McNabb could revive Mcfumble’s career. He has lead teams to win with similar talent level at WR.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:32 pm
McNabb will be fine if opposing defenses use a prevent every down and don’t rush the passer.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:32 pm
McNabb only goes out and wins games.
1. Playoffs 8 of 11 years
2. 5 of those 8 appearances went to at least the NFC Championship
3. 1 Super Bowl appearance where they lost to the cheating Patriots
And he’s not a winner? Over 33K yaards, 59% completion 2 to 1 TD to INT ratio….in the NFC East
with receivers named Pinkston, Freddie Mitchell, Reggie Brown and Kevin Curtis…..and a moody T.O
If you don’t like McNabb….you don’t know football at all.
The Raiders should pull the trigger and bring in this QB right now! 2nd round pick…hell, do it for the 1st round pick.
We don’t need Bruce Campbell anyway
March 24th, 2010 at 5:32 pm
No McNabb please. I’d rather stick with Bruce Almighty. Bruce can win if we can improve our O and D lines.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:32 pm
Dick, how does McNabb revive our offensive line? Does he share his salary with them?
March 24th, 2010 at 5:33 pm
McNabb/Gradkowski/Frye, with JaAbscessedBelly out of the NFL completely. Sounds like a good QB scenario to me.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:34 pm
Veterans don’t fix teams as bad as the Raiders. When have the Raiders ever built a team with veterans? Ever, in history? Name a time. The only time veterans helped us is when we ALREADY had a team, when we were already winning. John Madden said the same thing. All of that great mythology stuff about the Raiders came in after the nucleus was built.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:34 pm
Corkran, man you right the longest posts…
March 24th, 2010 at 5:35 pm
Oh, and McNabb pulled those numbers on a team that threw the ball 70% of the time and didn’t have a real running game.
Bring him in here!
March 24th, 2010 at 5:35 pm
Jamarcus goes either way I think. al has always cared about the MOB. He simply will not go into the season with loosing half of his fan base because he is sticking it out with Jamarcus.
Fans are not renewing their season tickets. The fan base that matters, season ticket holders, hate Jamarcus and have done more than any billboard could have ever done by simply not renewing their tickets.
Brining in McNabb is the type of Bold move that Al will make to win back the mob… Jamarcus being cut is almost a done deal
March 24th, 2010 at 5:36 pm
Raider fans = dumbest fans in all of sports. Possibly the dumbest people in civilization. Need proof? Just keep hitting reloading and keep reading comments on this thread. Unbelievable. Is there any fan here who understands our problems reach beyond the QB position?

That’s just wild azz thinking right there.
Bruce Gradkowski and his flash of 2 decent games over McNabb’s 8 playoff appearances, 5 NFC Championship appearances, 1 Super Bowl appearance and all this in the NFC East…
For Gradkowski?
Do you follow football?
March 24th, 2010 at 5:37 pm
Dickv, your comment about Al caring about the “mob” of Raider fans might be the single most delusional comment I’ve ever seen in here. Get a clue.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:38 pm
The O line is not great, but with Jamarcus dropping back 10-15 yards in the pocket everytime the perception is skewed to say the least
March 24th, 2010 at 5:38 pm
Al cared about that “mob” of Raider fans in Oakland when he left Oakland in the first place, didn’t he? And back then, there was a hard core, working class fan base in the east bay. It was as much of a mob as there was as far as pro sports fanaticism is concerned. Al brushed that “mob” off like a flea. Unbelievable. The kool aid if flowing today. Grab a cup.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:39 pm
Dickv, are you defending this offensive line? Never mind. Bring McNabb here. I can’t wait to see your guys’ reaction when McNabb is injured in week one.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:41 pm
Real madden raider… season ticket holders matter that is it.
They are the core of the Raiders market/ fan base. They Pay the salaries… you can not get on to TV without selling out.
Business is Business… the ticket holders are the only thing that counts in so many ways
March 24th, 2010 at 5:42 pm
Dickv, you have me in stitches with these comment about Al caring about the fans. In f’n stitches. Keep them coming.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:43 pm
Real MaddenRaider,
McNabb would be worth a shot. And given the Owner’s inability to really develop homegrown QB talent…this represents our best shot.
Get a Right Tackle and a decent Right Guard with a professional QB and a professional OC, that could be something interesting.
Of course the defense will continue to be garbage because its weak at DT, MLB and linebacker…but at least the team will score some points.
As long as DHB doesn’t play too much

Getting McNabb would be a big deal here
March 24th, 2010 at 5:45 pm
When the raiders moved back those same people came back buying tickets…
the raiders never sold out the LA Memeroial Coliseum so brining it back to a smaller stadium with better parking lots and a real transit system was a great move… for the ticket holders
March 24th, 2010 at 5:45 pm
No, McNabb would not be worth a shot. He’s one more step in the wrong direction. There’s no way in hell he wants to come here. So we’re dragging yet another NFL veteran here kicking and screaming. It took Seymour a week to get on the plane. I wouldn’t doubt if McNabb outright retired if traded here. He has the money. Every move we take away from rebuilding is a move in the wrong direction. What can mcnabb do for the Raiders in 3 years? That’s where our management needs to be. We’re one of the worst teams in football. Al Davis is making moves as if we’re just a couple of players away.

******************************
Obviously, ceteris paribus, you want McNabb.
But Bruce for 1/8th the price and not costing another draft pick or two, brings that down a little.
I think McNabb is toast, and at this stage in his career, is overrated. The Eagles are a very well run organization, and they are considering trading him. What should that tell you?
Kevin Kolb has done less in this league than Gradkowski, playing on a better team BTW, and they might hand him the keys.
If I were the Eagles, I wouldn’t trade him, and if I were the Raiders I wouldn’t trade for him, unless they have moved on from Russell and I highly doubt that.

Remember, $3 million of JR’s contract is guaranteed no matter what. If he gets cut, he walks with $40 million. And who the hell gives a damn about Bruce’s $1.7 million? That’s chump change even for a backup. There is no salary cap, so as long as JR continues on the path he’s started this offseason, it’s very likely he’d stay.

March 24th, 2010 at 5:48 pm
Vegas,
McNabb…or Bruce?
March 24th, 2010 at 5:48 pm
Personally, I would trade for McNabb and TO. We need veteran help from players who are actually good players.
It’s not like McNabb would fix the team, but in terms of the QB position and offensive output, we need to address it just as much as addressing the OL and DT/MLB. If you get an opportunity to have a shot at McNabb while youre trying to fix the DL, say, you dont just ignore it and carry on.
As much as I like Gradkowski/Frye and was one of the first to say how those two would be prove to be better QBs than Russell if given a chance early last season, they are not of the same caliber as McNabb is.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:48 pm
OMG Vegas!
Dude, are you trying to make a case for Bruce over McNabb?! Damn, that’s man Love. lol
March 24th, 2010 at 5:50 pm
Madden Raider your clamoring about the raiders needing to rebuild is way more ridiculous than bringing in a proven vet.
The raiders been rebuilding for the past 4 years now and it has been the worse four years in history.
Al does not know how to rebuild
He will “re load”… maybe win 5 or 6 games, but he will get the fans back to where he can manage the losses with some nifty accounting. He can not hide the losses with half the stadium empty
March 24th, 2010 at 5:50 pm
The downside is that we should be making moves for offensive linemen and defensive front 7. We’ve already missed most of those opportunities. The Raiders have to rebuild. How does McNabb help you rebuild? With our offensive line, he won’t even be able to bring results in the short term! He’ll get his spine snapped by week 3 with this line. And, he knows that, which is why I’m guessing he retires the minute the Eagles pull the trigger on this. If we already had an offensive line, I’d be all for this. McNabb could be our modern day Gannon. As it stands, he’s just another veteran we’re dragging here against his own will.

Reid is a good coach, but he has his faults. Tell you the truth Jimmy Johnson was the best coach in Philly during the McNabb – Reid Era… the defense was always very good.
Don’t give too much credit to that organization other than having sense to stick with a winning formula… that was never enough to actually win because you have to run the ball to win
March 24th, 2010 at 5:54 pm
Finally, Shanahan discussed the importance of having a strong supporting cast and a solid offensive system. “I don’t care what quarterback you have, you have to have a good supporting cast and not only a good supporting cast but you got to have a system that really relates to the players and that’s what you’re working for as a head coach in the NFL, to put that all together,” Shanahan said.
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
Here’s a great quote from Shanahan. Why kick JR to the curb AFTER we fix the supporting cast? I believe we need to stay the course. If McNabb came here for one or two years with JR as his caddie, I MIGHT be able to live with that. But I’d prefer JR getting another shot with another year under his belt and an improved OL and WRs.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:54 pm
SNB,
Sorry but I have never been a big fan of McNabb. I know he had a great career so far. At this point, I am not big on some expensive and old QB. We have so many holes in our lines that even Peyton Manning wouldnt last in our offense.
Yes Bruce had a flash but the way I analyzed him for all of his starts this year I liked what I saw. I saw someone who played better and better as time moved on. I am nothing more than a fan behind a computer. That’s my take and I can live with that.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:55 pm
Too much lying in here today. The shills are in full force. I am now hoping McNabb comes here to just let you guys have it this fall when he winds up getting injured, or being ineffective because all he can do is throw the ball away with our offensive gameplan and the lack of time he’ll get. It’ll be fun to watch you guys scapegoat him. And there’s no way he’d come here for that reason. Best case scenario: He comes here, throws the ball away, gets scapegoated. Worst case scenario: Our offensive line gets him killed. Great scenario. Goodnight, dreamers.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:55 pm
Debo,
1.7 million may not seem like much, but if they were planning on making a move to McNabb, why even tender him at all? Just let him hit the market and go from there.
It’s all moot anyway, IMO. McNabb isn’t coming here. But has any team ever had the starting QB making 12+ million and the backup $9 million? What sense does that make?
March 24th, 2010 at 5:56 pm
The raiders tried to rebuild the defense first under Rob Ryan… that failed miserably… mostly because the two corner stone LB’s sucked.
since 2007 they have try to rebuild the offense completely and that was abigger failure than the defensive rebuilding effort

One more thing SnB,
Bruce Grad is a younger version of Garcia but with more leadership than Garcia. They play exactly alike but you know all our players respected Bruce last year. i dont ever remember Garcia being considered a leader in his career. If Bruce can have a career like Garcia in his prime than that is a steal!
March 24th, 2010 at 5:58 pm
Donavan McNabb is a class act, and always has been. He (unlike Garcia; not quite sure what they were thinking there) would actually BE a professional and would be a great example of how an NFL quarterback does his job. Plus, he can still play a little.
I wouldn’t give up a ton to get him, but I am certain he would help not only JaMarcus, but the rest of the young guys as well.
March 24th, 2010 at 5:59 pm

MaddenRaider…
The thing is, our QB and offensive play was woeful (includes RB and WR). So was our run stopping (DT/LB). So was our Special Teams play (kick/punt returning). So was our offensive Line. There are four areas that have to be addressed. McNabb (and TO) addresses one of them. You cannot overlook it if you get a shot at it. You still have to go about addressing it as youre out there trying to address the other needs.
But I do agree too—we need to actually ADDRESS the other areas tho. You cannot just sign McNabb (as Davis) and just sit on your hands thinking you’ve won over RaiderNation and the NFL community with all the “Raiders greatness is back.” Davis has a bad habit of ignoring the lines in the draft, he has to pull the trigger if he’s genuine about fixing the team as quickly as possible.

Debo,
1.7 million may not seem like much, but if they were planning on making a move to McNabb, why even tender him at all? Just let him hit the market and go from there.
It’s all moot anyway, IMO. McNabb isn’t coming here. But has any team ever had the starting QB making 12+ million and the backup $9 million? What sense does that make?
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
We could see a lot of strange things in an uncapped year. I mean how much sense does it make to sign a third-string qb who’s never taken a snap in the NFL $10 million to back up Matt Hasselbaack?? How did Routt get tendered at $3 million? What wouldn’t make sense to me would be to give up on JR ONE bad year. A year where he had ROOKIE starters at WR and no pass protection after the second game. And let’s not forget that he’s had his moments with some nice comeback wins. He’s lost weight and is at the facility working. Can’t see him getting cut.

Aig,
Garcia never accomplished anything of note. He bounced around the league a bunch of times and had a couple of good years with San Fran, 1 good year as a fill in in Philly when McNabb got hurt, and 1 decent year, not good, in T.B….other than that he was terrible.
Man, its tough being a Raider fan. We’ve seen so much bad football that our ability to properly analyze players has been blunted…and include my own outlook in that as well.
McNabb was in an offense where he had basically no receiver or just 1 receiver for his entire career and still put up 32K yards passing, 2-1 TD – INT ratio, 59% completion, several division championshiops, 8 playoff appearances and appearances in half of the NFC Championship games of the last decade.
And he’s 33 or 34. You kidding me. That screams a Rich Gannon 2 scenerio. Just get a Right Tackle and Guard and the offense is competitive…especially with a competent OC>
You have to do this deal if you are the Raiders and you are serious about winning
March 24th, 2010 at 6:08 pm
JR is a waste of time and space. The sooner we get McNabb and cast JR to the trash the better. Even if McNabb coming in is part of trying to get JR to work harder and fulfill his potential, it’s inevitable that JR ends up out of the league, to the CFL perhaps.

March 24th, 2010 at 6:20 pm
Aig,
When has Davis done his best work? Its been with QBs on the their 2nd career….Plunkett, Gannon, Blanda. that’s it. only QB he developed was Stabler.
QBs of McNabb’s caliber just don’t come around often. I am not interested in watching Garciakowski or any QB like them. I want a high caliber player in the position.
As for the O-Line…Henderson and Gallery are just fine on the left side….the line needs a Right Tackle. Draft one in the 2nd round and that should take care of that. As far as RG, that shouldn’t be hard to get someone in their serviceable.
McNabb knows how to move around in the pocket and can still pull the ball down. He’s a leader, he played in more meaningful games in half a season that the Raiders have played in almost a decade.
I don’t have any interest in watching middling players anymore.
Fargas, Gerard Warren, Gradkowski, TErdell Sands, Morrison, Routt….Raider Nation has to realize that these guys just cant play.
Get me McNabb 1st….then we can figure out what to do in the draft and free agency to get the line better.
In fact, go ahead and use a 1st rounder on the RT. With McNabb we will have a competitive offense.
If we stick with JaDavis or Gradkowski, then the 1st rounder has to go to Dan Williams because the offense will be garbage

He was also throwing to TO. Doesn’t matter though. Grads isn’t Jeff Garcia just because you say so. Bottom line is this team is not a qb away from contending. Keeping the group of qbs we have forces us to make improvements to the other positions. Signing McNabb may placate the fans for a while, but we’ll suck if we dont get the line, running game and wrs fixed. If you don’t believe, just look at what happened to Chicago last year.

You see what happens when the Raiders finally cut these guys…they end up out of the league.
Put Gradkowski on waivers and he is scrambling just to get a camp invite.
2-games don’t mean squat…and he was his plodding self in the 3rd one…please don’t elevate a backup QB, maybe 3rd sring QB…to anything more….JUST BECAUSE JADAVIS IS TERRIBLE DOES NOT MAKE GRADKOWSKI JACK…

Or would he drop McNabb into his kindergarden offense Russell has to deal with?
March 24th, 2010 at 6:41 pm
Vegas,
Kevin Kolb was drafted by Philly in the 2nd round. Philly has cultivated and developed this kid. Andy Reid, a competent coach and evaluator, knows what he has in Kolb.
Bruce Gradkowski was drafted by Tampa Bay in the sixth round. He was cut by three teams that all needed QBs. Jon Gruden, a competent coach and evaluators, knew what he had in “Grads” and cut him….then he couldn’t stick in Cleveland or even make camp with St. Louis.
“Grads” LMAO…flashes for two games..played ok in 1, lousy in another, and well in a third…so what….
How many QBs have flashed for a game or two…only to be badly exposed as horrible QBs.
I can’t believe you guys in here. You guys are smart fans too. Gradkowski is no answer and I stand pretty confidently in saying that.
Just like JT O’Sullivan, Frank Reich, Jon Kitna, Tom Tupa, Shaun Hill, Trent Edwards, Ryan Fitzpatrick…..and on and on and on….these guys leave you on the side of the freekn road.
I’d rather see them go ahead with JaDavis over Gradkowski based on RAW talent and potential alone.
I have no interest in watching Gradkowski have a 5 or 6 year stint as a fiery leader that average 5 or 6 wins a season with maybe one 9-7 thrown in there.
no way
Draft someone if Gradkowski is the best we can do…and over Donavan McNabb no less.. are you freekn serious……..have you seen the talent that McNabb has been surrounded with in his career…PUHLEEZE
Get him in here…he’ll get over the initial disappointment…then he will see a Pro-Bowl Caliber Tight end..and say…”I can work with this” then he’ll see a hungry Louis Murphy bustn his azz to get better and McNabb will say “I can work with this” and he’ll see JLH’s catch and run ability and Michael Bush’s running style and DMAC’s hands….then Hue Jackson will tell McNabb that we will shore up the RT position before OTAs start.
Then we have a freekn offense.
March 24th, 2010 at 6:41 pm
Aig… You can’t be serious when you say McNabb isn’t a leader. The Eagles have been pretty damned good for several years now, and they have been McNabb’s team ever since he took over the starting job. He’s been the face of the freakin’ franchise for over ten years! As far as the TO situation, I don’t think the players wanted any part of that mess publicly, and it’s pure speculation on your part to say they didn’t have his back within the team.
Now, you may have a point when you say that he might not want to come here, but I’m pretty sure Al doesn’t do the deal if he knows McNabb doesn’t want to be a Raider, and you can bet that he asks him first.
How many head coaches in the NFL do you suppose would choose Gradkowski over McNabb right now, to lead their team on the field? The answer to that question should be pretty obvious.
March 24th, 2010 at 6:42 pm
If McNabb is so great, then why is he always mentioned as the guy that should exit Philly for a few years now? Do the folks in Philly know something that the rest of the league doesnt know? I mean they absolutely loved Brian Dawkins there but yet Philly fans have never embraced McNabb. AJ feely looked great in their system. kolb looked great in that system. Garcia looked great in that system. Perhaps, it’s their system that made McNabb so great. I dont know but it sure is interesting.

A leader doesnt get benched in the middle of the season. A leader doesnt tell you that he didnt know the OT rule. He also had another gaffe against the Raiders last year when he didnt realize it was 4th down.

In a heartbeat he would do it. Everybody knows AD overpays everyone so he shoulkd feel bad about setting McNabb up for a raise. Besides, there is a lot of young talent on this squad. If AD will draft correctly (i.e. DT, OT, C, MLB, OG, PR/KR, CB) and add one or two key FA like Malwae, this team would be very competitive. Mc Nabb would actually be better off here than other places. Just my opinion.

So what Kolb was a 2nd round pick? Fargas was a 3rd and Bush was a 4th, maybe we should have played Fargas more. And while we are at it, maybe elevate JLH over Murphy because he was picked higher.
Kolb has worse stats than Bruce, while playing for a perennial SB contender. Bruce has played for the NFL’s worst, the 3 teams he was cut from, are picking ahead of us this year.
I never have said that Bruce deserve to be given anything but a chance, and should have to earn what he gets. I am just 98% confident he will outplay Russell this offseason and preseason. And if that happens, he should start. If he doesn’t, he shouldn’t.

Of course McNabb is better than anyone on the roster. I don’t think anyone is debating that.
But if you just look at the player and nothing else….well you turn into Al Davis.
Ask yourself, what would the Patriots do? No way do they pay Russell $9 million dollars, and no way do they give up a 2nd round pick or better for a guy who is 33 and in the last year of his contract.
The business side of the aspect, makes McNabb less favorably. He has one year left, and wants a new deal. You have to give up picks for him. You already paid a QB $40 million dollars and guaranteed another almost $2 million for this year.
In that aspect, McNabb makes very little sense. Who are the two teams trying to trade for McNabb? Raiders and Rams? Figures.

Problem is we’re so used to bums like JR or cheap labor like Collins, Walter, McCown, etc, we over-rate when someone like Gradkowski does ok for a couple games. We start getting as bad as Davis with all the “Gannon” “Plunkett” comparisons. Which is part of Davis’ problem, always relying on the same formula working all the time. Signing guys like Brooks, Collins, Gradkowski, Frye etc is rarely going to get you a Plunkett or Gannon. Same problem with the OL and DL—Davis always looking for cheap labor with little talent. Instead of drafting young linemen every season, i mean at least 3 per season, because you need to keep upping the talent level of the lines seasonally.
Right thru this team are a couple of things—cheap talentless labor, or, young projects on scholarship that arent committed to winning or being pros, or just outright suck as football players but have good measurables.
There is very little on our roster worth holding onto in all honesty.

McNabb would obviously be an upgrade over anything we’ve had at QB in a long time. I have always kind of felt that he was a bit of a dork though.
Assuming this deal doesn’t go down — which it definitely still could — I’d still like to see us sign Troy Smith away from Baltimore for a 5th round pick. Then figure Smith and Gradkowski would be on the roster with JaMarcus having the off-season and preseason to turn things around and be the 3rd guy to stick — even though in that scenario there’s a good chance JaMarcus would not only stick, but start. But if JaMarcus continues to flounder it’s time to jettison his $9.5 million salary and go with Gradkowski, Smith and Frye.

I would love it if we get McNabb without giving up our 1st round pick.
Then pick a left offensive tackle in the first round, and a defensive tackle in the second round.
=======================================================
Exactly Kirk. The Raiders might be able to land McNabb for a 2nd and 3rd rounder….actually, I would give up the 1st rounder and see if we can’t extract an extra 2nd or 3rd rounder from the Eagles.
Then I cut/restructure Tommy Kelly, Michael Huff and JaDavis if cash flow is an issue. Then I give their money to McNabb. I draft an OT with my 1st 2nd rounder and a DT with my 2nd one.
That way Davis won’t draft Bruce Campbell. Who would be an unmitigated disaster here.

Have to disagree with you, Vegas. If the Patriots were paying a guy 9 million dollars and he wasn’t ready to play they would absolutely bring in an older professional to help the team win games and bring the young guy along.
It’s called protecting your investment.
As I said before, I wouldn’t give up a ton to get the guy, but I can’t think of a better veteran to help Russell along, and help this team be competetive at the same time.
Which is what they should have done from the beginning, in my view.

All of this is wishful thinking. If McNabb is indeed traded…he’ll end up in Arizona, Minnesota, San Fran or Carolina…something like that.
BTW, why didn’t Seattle pick up Bruce Gradkowski instead of Charlie Whitehurst. They could have had Bruce for a 2nd rounder and $1.7 million…instead they went after a 3rd string QB who hasn’t thrown an NFL regular season pass by swapping a high 2nd rounder for a low 2nd rounder AND a 3rd round pick and then paid him $10 million.
Oh, and Arizona tried to get Whitehurst too.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
Philly always seemed to win games without McNabb. I mean A.J. Feely led them to the playoffs when he got hurt. Philly just plain has it figured out over there. The defense has always been strong, great OL and an OC/HC that gets it. I’m for the status quo. But if he comes, I only want him here for two years at the most, then give JR back the keys.

As I said in my first post on thsi subject, Vegas, I’m not of the opinion that we should give up a ton to get McNabb. If the price is right and it fits within the draft plan, fine. If not, we pass.
Andy Reid is blowing smoke. He (and everybody else) knows that McNabb is on the downside of his career. He can still contribute, but they’re ready for the Kolb era over there and the world knows it.
All this talk about high draft picks for McNabb is just that, talk. IF McNabb gets traded I think it’ll be for less than people think, and for some of the very reasons you pointed out.
March 24th, 2010 at 7:33 pm
Btw, DTs drafted in the first round bust more frequently than QBs in the first round. Something to be wary about. They dont have to come in the first, but we need to focus on pumping young drafted linemen thru the roster.
All our starters right now on the OL are back-up worthy. Gallery is getting old and brittle now too. As for the DL…Kelly should be a back-up NG. Seymour naturally is a top UT/DE talent. Shaugnessy is coming along fine, Scott is a bit iffy, but a good back-up RE.
CBs…Asomugha/Johnson are ok, Routt isnt Nickel CB worthy. Huff is ok back-up. Branch is excellent. Mitchell jury still out, needs time. LBs are all mediocre. WR, can only really hang a hat on Murphy right now. Schilens gets injured too often, but is a possible good one. DHB, still needs time, didnt like the pick, but gotta give him 3 years before judging (like Russell has been given). RB, McFadden probably better off as a WR, Bush is ok. No other RB on the roster (Jahvid Best should be in our sights). TE, Miller and Myers very good. QBs, all rubbish.

GG,
Yup, shows how downright pathetic the whole situation in Oakland has been
——–
——————-
Jury’s still out on Gradkowski but he was 2-1 against 3 good teams with the one loss coming on a 3-day turnaround to play in Dallas on Thanksgiving. The game he got hurt in against the Redskins I think he was having his best game yet. He really looked to be getting better every week. No one is saying to pay him franchise QB money but he showed some flashes when he got his chance to start.
I also disagree that the rest of the roster is garbage. We have a few holes. We have an excellent young TE. Huff was great (finally) in 2009. Branch is looking like a diamond in the rough. Nnamdi is probably the best CB in the league. Seymour is a top-notch player. Scott and Shaughnessy and even Desmond Bryant have a lot of potential. Chris Johnson is highly underrated and is one of the best No. 2 CBs in the league IMO. Schilens and Murphy are young WRs who play hard and have a lot of potential. Gallery is one of the better guards in the league. Bush and McFadden could be one of the best 1-2 punches in the league if we have competent QB play to keep defenses honest and reasonably improved o-line play. Lechler is the best punter in the NFL. Seabass was the best kicker in the NFL last year.
That’s a lot to work with.
Keys are we have to:
1) Get much, much better QB play than we’ve seen since Gannon. QB is exponentially more important than any other position in an organization and when your QB play stinks so does your team’s record.
2) Improve the o-line. Too many journeymen and sub-par players.
3) Get an anchor for the front 7 on defense. Either a mammoth DT, a run-stuffing MLB or both to improve the run D.
4) Get a legitimate KR and hope JLH regains his form as a punt returner.
Other than those 4 areas we’re in the best shape we’ve been in in a long time and in better shape than a lot of teams in this league. But those areas definitely do need addressing. Doesn’t mean the entire roster sux though.

I hate the Patriots more than anybody. I bring up their analogy, because they probably approach the game from a business point of view more than any team. That’s why they won a bunch of Super Bowls, have one of the nicest new stadiums and are as profitable as any team in the league.
We suck, haven’t won dck in years, are barely profitable and have the worst stadium in the league.
You have to approach the game with at least a little business sense.

No. Teams don’t part with 2nd round picks lightly. A multiple Pro Bowl QB like McNabb is talked about being dealt for a 2nd rounder. Wasn’t Anquan Boldin just traded for a 2nd rounder (or even lower, I can’t quite remember). Doesn’t mean Gradkowski won’t emerge. Teams just haven’t seen enough to make that kind of investment.
I can tell you one thing: if he were an unrestricted free agent he’d be signed in a heartbeat. I’m sure his hometown of Pittsburgh would be interested considering Big Ben’s troubles and the hurtin’ Bruce Almighty put on them last year.

Aig,
I’ve been a little skeptical of McNabb for a long time. I’ll say this about Grads. I was very impressed with the 4th qtr of the Pitt game. Even if the pick he threw right to the CB at tbe end had been caught, it was a damn good comeback. But I think the Cincy win was fools gold. He did not play well and Cincy did everything in its power to lose to us. As happy as I was that we won, I knew the JR haters would use it as ammo. JR has shown a flair for the dramatic himself since he’s been here. And the situation he walked into with two rookie WRs, no pass protection and no running game set him up for failure in my opinion. He played much better once Chaz came back and DHB went to the bench. I have no problem with Grads providing some competition, but I think JR deserves another chance. So far, it looks like he’s earning it.

Philly has a plan…they developed this kid and the they have a team that is probably a year or two away from a serious S.B run because of the transition on defense.
When you have a plan you can do a seemless transition like the Eagles and Packers did.
When you are inept and have no plan whatsoever, then you have to make last minute deals in the dark.

I’d argue that at this point, in addition to those 3, Rodgers, Roethlisberger (legal issues aside), Rivers, Romo and even Favre are better. Eli Manning, Flacco, Matt Ryan, Carson Palmer and Matt Schaub are probably on par with McNabb at this point. That puts McNabb in the 9-14 range of QBs.
No, he’s no McCown, but he’s no longer a top-5 NFL QB in my opinion either. More like borderline top-10.
March 24th, 2010 at 9:09 pm
Chris in NY,
If McNabb wasn’t 34 yrs old and had more than a year on his contract….he’d been gone by now. Anquan Boldin…the issue was more about how much a team would have to pay him in the long-term deal.
Gradkowski is only $1.7mm and would cheerfully sign a long-term deal averaging such.
I don’t hate the guy. I just think Raider Nation is pouring WAY TOO much faith and hope in a guy based one good game and another okay game and completely forget the bad game in Dallas.
Maybe the losing has blunted my enthusiasm for Raider football. I can no longer get excited about potential. Not here…Not in Oakland….its not rational to think Gradkowski goes from fringe 3rd stringer/UFL to full-fledged starting QB leading the team to victory.
WE HAVE ALL SEEN GUYS LIKE JT O’SULLIVAN AND SHAUN HILL.
Let’s just say, Gradkowski gets a chance to compete…and that’s it.
Just because JaDavis is a disaster does not make Gradkowski any good.

Any team you have in mind???
After 10 years of trying to get it done in Philly, perhaps it is time to cut bait.
Tennessee came close to the national championship for four years with Manning. Then won it the next year with Tee Martin at QB.

bottom line is the oline has to get better before we can run or throw the ball. when cable was the oline coach we had a very formidable run game. it seems that once the oline was no longer his main priority it has regressed, i believe with jackson in the fold that its going to give cable more time to focus on what he does best. and no i dont mean beating women.

Chris in NY,
That’s just your opinion. The results speak for themselves….
30K yards passing, 2 to 1 TD to INT ratio…59% career passer, 5 NFC Championship Games, 1 super bowl appearance 8 of 11 playoff appearances in the one of the toughest divisions in football.
Those are facts….
What’s Carson Palmer done? He’s had Chad Johnson and T.J to throw too. Tony Romo? Matt Ryan….they have a long way to go before they are in McNabb’s class.
McNabb plays for a city notorious for getting on their players…that’s what it is.
Eagles have had some dominant teams…and McNabb was a key reason for it…especially when you throw the ball 70% of the time and have a running game that’s really a passing game.

Fair enough S&B,
I think most fans backing Gradkowski, like myself, are cautiously optimistic that he can be the guy. I don’t think we’d be floored if he turned into another guy who flashed but then turned into another Shaun Hill. I myself am in favor of signing Troy Smith as another option with upside to compete for the starting job.
But along with the Shaun Hills and Scott Mitchells of the landscape, there are the Kurt Warners, Rich Gannons and Jeff Garcias of the NFL who bounce around in obscurity because of their draft position (or lack thereof) and when they finally get a legitimate chance to be the guy they take it and run with it. There’s every bit the chance Gradkowski will emerge as one of those guys as there is he washes out and fades back into journeyman status.

Guy led his team to the AFC Championship game as a rookie. Injury really screwed him up his 2nd season and yet he was still playing in the divisional playoff round. I’m not saying he’s great but he’s good and he’s only going to get better.
March 24th, 2010 at 9:25 pm
Chris in NY,
First, I like the fact that you mention Troy Smith as another option, you recognize more competition is needed.
Second, Kurt Warner is the only guy I’ve seen truly come from nothing. That was special. And even he still got caught up in New York after winning a ring…but Warner is a true nothing to something.
Rich Gannon? He only came on after being in the league for 12 or 13 years? Would you wait 10 yrs for Gradkowski to finally get it?
Jeff Garcia? To me he is exactly what I fear we would inherit with Gradkowski. A guy who’s fiery disposition speaks louder than the actual results. I see Garcia and I see a guy who had a couple of good years in San Fran, a few good games in PHilly, and 1 decent, read decent, year in Tampa.
The true something from nothing is so rare. 2 games, again anyone pro-QB can give me 2 games…hell, JaDavis gave us two games to close 2008.
March 24th, 2010 at 9:28 pm
The one guy the Raiders should have acquired is Charlie Whitehurst from SD. The Seahawks picked him up for a third.
Rather give up a third for a chance at a solid starting QB than a SLB.
March 24th, 2010 at 9:35 pm
mcnabb has 3 to 4 years left in the league. im all for trading for the guy just as long as we dont give up too much for him. which we almost assuredly would.
March 24th, 2010 at 9:43 pm
Is a 2nd rounder and Morrison too much?
Morrison will likely be cut if they acquire another LB in free agency or the draft. And if they keep reaching for guys like Mike Mitchell, then it would be like losing a fifth round pick.
March 24th, 2010 at 9:46 pm
McNabb’s been lucky to be with the same coach and same system his whole career.
They got him outside and moved him around.
Raider QB’s on the other hand are sitting ducks in the pocket.
March 24th, 2010 at 9:48 pm
S&B,
I’ve never been a huge Garcia fan but the guy did make more than his share of plays in this league and got three different teams to the playoffs. After this drought I’ll gladly take a fiery competitor who makes things happen and gets us back into postseason contention.
Another former Raider QB who Gradkowski compares to somewhat is Jeff Hostetler. Hoss of course had a Super Bowl ring on his resume before coming to Oakland, so I’m not comparing their careers, but just in terms of style of play: getting things done with a mix of mobility, athleticism and competitive fire more than your prototypical Marino-like dropback passer.

At least Russell is. I never could figure out why they never moved the pocket for him this year.
March 24th, 2010 at 9:53 pm
They were still moving the pocket in 08′ after Kiffin was fired.
In 09′ they went back to Old Al’s 7 step drop offense and DHB.
March 24th, 2010 at 9:56 pm
It’s such BS. Throwing on the run is a huge strength of his too. I hope Jackson can get this thing fixed.
March 24th, 2010 at 10:08 pm
It would be nice to hear from Hue Jackson. Looks like he’s going to be the sacrificial cow.
March 24th, 2010 at 10:53 pm
If you know he’s going to be the sacrificial cow why d you wnat to hear from him? In fact since you already know the outcome of everything why even bother? It’s the definition of insanity
March 24th, 2010 at 11:08 pm
Hue won’t be the sacrificial cow. If anything, I think Cable is the one on a tight leash. If the offense doesn’t improve and we still suck, Cable will be canned and Hue will just be another coach that can’t get much out of the unit, further proving that the talent is to blame. If the offense improves, than Hue is a hot commodity and Davis will need to promote him to keep him. Cable canned again.

Yep! This year Cable changed the play book and added more of the 5-7 step drops and kept QB’s in the pocket for far too long, instead of moving the pocket at times to by the QB’s time.
Lousy!
March 24th, 2010 at 11:11 pm
Cable is a moron. That or a complete puppet. Choose one. We were successful running the ball. Now, tell me. With a young QB, why wouldn’t you continue to run and pass in select situations?
The whole pass to win crap is just that.
March 24th, 2010 at 11:11 pm
The difference with McNabb in coming here is for the first time in his career he’ll at least have someone who has a serious intent to run the football and take some of the pressure off him.
Throughout his career if he didn’t do it it didn’t get done. Here of the coach is serious about a feature back he will at least have that to lean on. He instantly makes us division title contenders.
Raiderdebo,
I understand your concern for Russell if McNabb comes here but what this does is buy him time to fully develope without having to turn things around here. If we don’t win even if he plays well he wil take the fall. If mcNabb comes here his confidence is gives these young players instant credibility. Same as Farve did for Minn. THere is no question in their minds that they can win if they play well. On offense and defense. While even if Russell plays well it will take all season long before they’re confident.
Russell gets to see a real pro at work instead of some wannabes or tryin’tobees. He gets to hear what he has to do t be great from someone who actually KNOWS. It is citical for a young player like Russell to get that opportunity it will show him how to carry himself on and off the field. Especially with someone he can identify with.
McNabb was booed when he was drafted and is still hated in Philly I have a friend who is a hardcore Philly fan and he doesn’t like him at all. This guy can come here and get us back to the big game in a hurry. Most certainly the playoffs and when Russell does take over it’s a very different team and he’s a much more mature player who’s chomping at the bit to prove himself. At that point he may nly be 27 years old and perfectly ready for the role he has to play.
The cherry on the top is we don’t have to watch this farse called Gradkowski.
March 24th, 2010 at 11:12 pm
Should have worked that “continue to run a majority of the time and only pass in select situations”
March 24th, 2010 at 11:14 pm
If McNabb comes here, I just don’t see the Raiders keeping Russell unless he is willing to restructure. That is WAYYYY too much money tied up in your QB position. Russell is making Brady-esque money. Then you bring in another guy expecting top-QB money. No way.
March 24th, 2010 at 11:17 pm
Whoa. Why the hate for Gradkowski? He’s towed the company line, acted like a true leader on and off the field, and you are clowning him? Please. If Russell had half the fire that Gradkowski had, we may not be talking about a potential trade for McNabb.
March 24th, 2010 at 11:29 pm
You call it hate I call it reality. Sure Russell is to blame for the interest in McNabb. But if Gradkowski was so great we wouldn’t need McNabb either, right?
The coaches and the owner know Grads is journeyman QB at best. That is the reason why the interest in McNabb or else we stand pat. IMO Russell is head and shoulder better than either Frye or Grads he’sjust trying to get it together but it will take some time he’s still a young QB……….period and I want to make the playoffs this year. With McNabb that is entirely possible.

It makes a whole lot more sense when you put it that way Priest. As much as I want Russell to start, I know it will be tough for him since there are so many fans that want him out. If we start the season at home and he’s starting, every incomplete pass is going to bring down all kinds of boos. JR is as mentally tough as any young qb I’ve seen, but that would be tough. McNabb might be a nice bridge back for him.
March 25th, 2010 at 12:01 am
Debo,
exactly because they’re just waiting to see him fail, it’s crazy but true. It would almost be better for Grads to start and then bring in Russell if he falters or gets hurt. But the truth is if Russell is right when training camp starts Gradshas no chance of beating him out. That kid is so freakin talented and that gun he has for an arm is so lethal any pritection he gets if someone can get deep it’s 6 points.
It might take until midseason for him to really get it strokin’ but once he does it’s over he just needs to get over this terrible hump which is really the lack of confidence of the entire team. They need to learn how to win. Russell is just part of that.
So to be truely honest I can’t ait to see this kid really cut it loose like I know he can but everything else has to be better around him for him to really do that.
March 25th, 2010 at 12:17 am
Ahhh…the list of excuses TJ is running…
“can’t wait to see him cut it loose, BUT EVERYTHING ELSE HAS TO BE BETTER FOR HIM TO DO THAT”.
lol..you’re so full of crap.
Head to head? Grad wins easily…PERIOD!!
and stop with the “so freaking talented”, you idiot.
ONLY thing he has is a gun for an arm, and THAT IS NOT AN ASSET IN THE NFL. NO coach teaches a qb to throw hard…if you say they do, you’re a lying ass dog. It’s touch. It’s feel. It’s NOT hard balls.
Here’s my guarantee…WHEN RUSSELL BUSTS OUT, YOUR SORRYASS IS GOING TO USE THE ABOVE EXCUSE…THAT EVERYONE AROUND HIM WASN’T BETTER, SO IT’S NOT HIS FAULT.
I GUARANTEE IT.
And yeah, you spineless illiterate worm, when that happens I’ll paste this comment just to laugh at you…again…still.

Because the Patriots are one of the best football teams in the NFL, and have been for years. If this were 1985, people would be asking, “What would the Raiders do?” But it’s not.
March 25th, 2010 at 12:44 am
Richochet, and what will you say if Russell goes to another team and turns out to be good? I want to see this guy on a real NFL team before I make the final call on him. The Raiders have no offensive line. We are the worst team in the league when it comes to gameplans that take consideration for the QBs safety. We put our QBs on an island. We haven’t had a good QB since Gannon, and he was surrounded by a team. I could see if we had one QB play well in this mess. We haven’t. Veterans tend to do better but they still suck.
March 25th, 2010 at 1:04 am
Still out there RMR?
Gotta conspiracy theory for ya.
I think that Al will never let any one player be bigger than the Raiders. And since he IS the Raiders, he will always be the first person associated with the team.
Al likes to bring in veteran QB’s that have been linked with other teams.
When he drafts a QB who is successful, they don’t remain with the team for their careers.
He could have kept Stabler, but he let him go.
Marcus Allen could have been seen as the ultimate Raider but he restricted his playing time and let him go as well.
Tim Brown, same thing.
Shell, Upshaw, Otto, all seen as team players.
There is no one player that stands out as the ultimate Raider. Davis and his image reigns over Oakland.
If Russell had been successful, I believe he would never have had a full career in Oakland, because Al and his “uber” ego would have prevented it.
Good theory??

You seem to emphasize the “theory” part, as if most of what you say isn’t already common knowledge.

Didn’t you say that the lack of great supporting cast is what made JR look so bad and that he was far better than everyone says? … Yet NOW, you say that with a change at QB (brining in McNabb), we’re instantly a playoff team and within reach of the Superbowl! LMAO!!! You slipped up and showed your hand, TJ. You have admitted that you’re full of it and that you truly do know that Cable was right when he said that with better QB play, we’d have been in the playoffs… it just took having to defend another BLACK quarterback for you to come clean and show your true feelings. How’s it feel to be the one that proved that you’re a racist and blindly defended JR’s terrible play solely because you didn’t want him to lose his job to a white boy? You’re totally fine with a black man sending him to the bench to “develop,” though, aren’t you? LOL @ how you want JR to start immediately and say that it’s what he needs in order to develop when it’s Gradkowski who would start instead… but say the exact OPPOSITE is needed in order for JR to develop when it’s a BLACK quarterback instead of Grads.

“I understand your concern for Russell if McNabb comes here but what this does is buy him time to fully develope without having to turn things around here.”
So you’re saying that you admit that Russell isn’t near being ready to be a fulltime starter in the NFL.
“Especially with someone he can identify with.”
How exactly is it that JR can identify with McNabb moreso than with any of the veterans and coaches that we already have? As someone who calls out other people for racism that they never intended, you seem to have tipped your hand a bit on how you really feel there.
Okay now… here is the BIG one. Are you ready for it?
“This guy can come here and get us back to the big game in a hurry. Most certainly the playoffs”
You just ADMITTED that with a good quarterback, the rest of the Raiders team AS IS can make the playoffs in your opinion… and even went so far as to say “back to the big game in a hurry”!!! All your excuses, apologism, and lies to cover JR’s bad play have just been undermined by you trying to argue against the people who don’t want McNabb in Oakland. You just accidentally called out your own BS and showed everyone that deep down inside, you know that the supporting cast is good enough to win the WEAK AFC West if not for the horrible play that JR has shown us to date.

Cable’s choice of the three quarterbacks is Gradowski. He says it’s an open competition only because Al still wants to be proven right on Russell.
Trade for McNabb? Again, Al is considering this only because he wants to be proven right on Russell.
The problem is that he’s wrong on Russell.
Al loves the song McNabb sings about Russell: It’s not just Russell “it’s a team sport”.
It’s the team giving him lousy footwork, making him so slow stepping back into pocket, staring down his receivers, throwing too soon, throwing too late, throwing impossible to catch passes, and putting his receivers in danger with crap decisions.
We just went down this effin road and there was a lot of potholes in it. Do we really have to drag this team down it again?!
Why in the world do we want to bring in an ageing quarterback just because he says nice things about Russell and Al wants to be proven right?!
McNabb is a thousand times better than Russell will ever be but his time is past.
All Graddowski has to do to beat Russell is ask him to pick up some Crispy Cremes on the way in to work,
March 25th, 2010 at 4:05 am
WTF is with all the triplicated posts at 3:31 am lol
March 25th, 2010 at 4:58 am
Any trade for McNabb is just dumb unless JaMarcus Russell is cut from the roster.
What is the point of wasting a high 2nd round pick and spending another $10m+ on a veteran QB when you have a former No1 draft pick three years into a $60m contract?
There is no point. If Russell needs another year to learn and grow, then we have Gradkowski already on the roster and on a sensible salary. McNabb is a great guy but he is on the way down. He is not the next Rich Gannon.
Actually, it would be pretty stupid wasting a high second on McNabb even if Russell was cut. The Raiders would almost certainly get a choice of Jimmy Clausen in the first or Tebow/McCoy/Pike in the second or Skelton/Brown/LeFevour in the third. Clausen would be as expensive as McNabb but he would have a fifteen year career ahead of him and not a two year fade-away.
McNabb – great guy but not for us. Dumb idea.
March 25th, 2010 at 5:44 am
Good Morning Nation!!!
As soon as I heard that Philadelphia put McNabb on the trade block…I knew there would be a story about the Raiders inquiring about him, and how no one has heard about it!
March 25th, 2010 at 8:00 am
Yeah Mcnabb is a dumb idea what! I could care less if we have overpaid backups I want a great season you know maybe win opening game maybe be in the playoff race in November Mcnabb only 100 times better than Grads ever will be , make it happen big Al.
March 25th, 2010 at 8:01 am
Is Adam Schefter making up rumors again?
March 25th, 2010 at 8:02 am
The issue of whether we were a QB away last year is ridiculous!
McNabb under last year’s circumstances of Gallery going down, DHB starting, Chaz injury, Cable play calling, etc would have missed the playoffs with this Raider team just like Gradkowski and the gang.
More importantly McNabb on last years team is a whole different thought process than Jeff Garcia or Bruce Gradkowski. Or Jamarcus Russell for that matter. And it had nothing to do with him being black, lol.
March 25th, 2010 at 8:04 am

March 25th, 2010 at 8:06 am
Are you people insane….McNabb would instantly be the best QB we have had since Gannon.
I’d take three or four years of McNabb over three or four more years of Al pushing Russell on his coaches….and fuk Garbagekowski.
Trade a 2nd and 5th for McNabb.
Sign Brad Hoover to play FB.
Re-sign Morrison.
Draft Dan Williams, NT, round 1
Draft JD Walton, C, Baylor, round 3
Draft Marshal Newhouse, G, TCU, round 4
Draft Micah Johnson, MLB, Kentucky, 5
With those moves and Hue Jackson replacing Cable as the o-coordinator, even I would think we should contend for the wild card next year.
March 25th, 2010 at 8:06 am
I disagree that McNabb = cut Russell
Why not add McNabb to the QB competition between Russell and Grads?
You’re telling me you wouldn’t trade the #2 we will get for Tom Howard for McNabb?
March 25th, 2010 at 8:07 am
trade McFadden for McNabb or trade 2nd & 5th rounders for him. who cares? just dump Russell!
the Chargers gave up on Ryan Leaf after just 3 seasons and in hindsight it was a great idea, because he couldn’t play in Tampa Bay, Dallas or Seattle either…

***
shoot. trade a 2nd rounder AND Thomas Howard to Philly for McNabb!
March 25th, 2010 at 8:10 am
Throwing away half our draft this year for a QB that is on his way out is not the answer. We need to keep doing the rebuilding process, yet it takes the raiders a bit longer than most nfl teams, but we are definitely on our way (finally).
We really need our first 3 picks this year to get a Tackle, NT and MLB. I’d rather go 8-8 this year and be competing for the playoffs next year than make the wild card this year and be back to 5-11 next year when McNabb retires.
March 25th, 2010 at 8:14 am
Madden: I don’t think this team is headed anywhere EVER with Russell, Gradkowski or Frye at QB …
solidify the O-Line. fire Sanjay Lal. Get a real WR Coach and a vet mentor like Muhsin Muhammad
great place to start, but the roof is still 8-8. You need to win games BECAUSE of your QB, not in spite of him
McNabb gives a chance to not only compete, but win games!
March 25th, 2010 at 8:15 am
Morning shift. Where the sane people go….
What up smellas? Long time.
Can’t believe McNabb is even an option. Completely changes everything if we can pull this off. Wow.
March 25th, 2010 at 8:15 am
I would rather take any of the QB’s available in the 2nd round than McNabb though.
There is so much talent out there. Heck just draft Perrilloux in the 6th if you really want a new QB.
March 25th, 2010 at 8:16 am
mornin’ saint
I’ve created a poll. Give me the name of 1 player you’d like the Raiders to draft in Round 1 …
any player
March 25th, 2010 at 8:18 am
Madden: you’d draft McCoy, LeFevour, Tebow or Perrilloux before trading any picks for McNabb?
Really?
March 25th, 2010 at 8:20 am
Maybe not McCoy, but yes. At least not my 2nd round pick. If we could give up one of our LBs and a 3rd or 4th rounder for him, then sure, bring him in. But our 2nd is way too good to give up to get him.
I mean, we have a chance at drafting someone like Spikes or Bruce Campbell with our 2nd.
March 25th, 2010 at 8:25 am
I don’t think Bruce Campbell will still be on the board at #39
Terrance Cody either …
OT’s & NT’s are way too valuable
In fact it’s very possible that 5 OT’s & 3 DT’s will go in the Top 15
March 25th, 2010 at 8:29 am
wouldn’t the Rams be smart to get McNabb & Suh in the first 2 rounds?
not sure what DT they could get in Round 2 to help the run defense, but nothing even close to what Suh would give them and Sam Bradford isn’t going to be a star during his rookie campaign
think Matthew Stafford with Detroit last year
Rams finish 4-12 next year with a rookie QB and a crappy run defense (again)
March 25th, 2010 at 8:29 am
There is so much talent this draft. I think the top 45 or so picks all have the potential to go in the top 15.
Meaning we are basically getting 2 first round talent players this year.
I think you will be surprised at the players we can take with our 2nd round pick.
March 25th, 2010 at 8:31 am
i agree a second rounders too much. if we make a decent acquisition with that pick we got a player for ten years. if we trade it we got mcnabb for two or three. im all for trading for mcnabb the price just has to be right which it almost assuredly will not.
March 25th, 2010 at 8:32 am
For the record, I really think McNabb is on his way out and is just being carried by the quality of his WR’s. That is why Kolb was able to step in and immediately play great.
Our WRs don’t really compare to Jackson, Maclin and Celek. (well maybe our TE, but other than that)
March 25th, 2010 at 8:33 am
I would rather take any of the QB’s available in the 2nd round than McNabb though.

How can you say that?
DO you want to win?
McNabb? Or Russell, Grads, or Frye?
Is it even a question that takes pondering?
March 25th, 2010 at 8:33 am
RRS,
Don’t know enough about the actual players themselves to pick a player. If we are committed to a DT/OT at #8 but the 2-3 best players are already taken by that point then I say look elsewhere and wait for the 2nd round. If we bring in McNabb(that would be sick!) then I hope it’s OT, if not, than DT.

I am not saying I would do that, I am just saying I would rather we take Lefevour or Tebow in the 2nd than trade it to the eagles for McNabb.
I personally think both are stupid ideas, but I think drafting a QB that will be around for 10+ years is the better of the 2.
March 25th, 2010 at 8:37 am

I kinda agree with this. I’m expecting a #2 for Thomas Howard and a 3rd for Morrison. Factoring that in, I’d trade a #2 for McNabb in a heart beat.
I really don’t want to give up either of our current high draft picks because of how it we could add OL and DL help with first rd grades. Agree with that.
But you HAVE to find a way to get McNabb if Gradkowski is in line to start. If Russell is back on track then I agree we can take a pass. But legitimately back on track to where he left off the season before last, or bring in McNabb!

Incorrect.
McNabb has conssitently produced even though this is the FIRST time he’s had dcent, young, but decent WRs.
T.O. helped them get to the SB, but other than that, McNabb and Westbrook were alot of the O and still carried the team.
Not a huge fan of McNabb but to claim he’s on his way out is premature at best.
Don’t think Oakand will pay him what others might especially long term contract wise now that they might have Seymour’s contract to deal with. Who knows, they may franchise him again and then be done with him.
Think this one is mostly rumor. In a QB driven Leauge the Eagles would to well to keep all 3.

very well thought out post (#293) Jhill and I agree completely.
However, I still think that getting a 2nd rounder for Howard is a pipe dream and while a 3rd rounder for Morrison is certainly a possibility, no teams have brought him in for a visit and he’s been on the market for about 3 weeks now. Even Justin Fargas has visited 4 or 5 teams (even though they all passed)

San Diego, Kansas City and Denver all need linebacker help, and SD in particular has about a million draft picks this year. They could all have Morrison for a third round pick, and have chosen to pass.
Why? Because they’ve seen him twice a year for awhile now, and they, like a lot of us, know he sucks.
That third rounder ain’t coming for him, and the second rounder damn sure ain’t coming for Howard.

March 25th, 2010 at 8:57 am
Does that mean Ricky Brown is our MLB and Trevor Scott is back to 3rd down pass rush specialist?
***
I think it’ll be much like last year. Morrison & Brown will compete for the MLB job, but Capt Kirk just may take a seat on the bench this time around (until Ricky Brown gets hurt again)
I expect Marshall to get creative on defense now that he has 2 players on defense that can play DE or OLB and Seymour can play just about anyplace along the D-Line.
I don’t expect to see Scott, Howard or Wimbley on the bench for an entire game. 2 will start, but all 3 will have significant playing time
Example: on 3rd & long we’ll have Scott as rush end and Howard & Wimbley at OLB. Seymour moves inside next to Kelly. Then we could even send Wimbley on a blitz from OLB. tons of pressure on the QB with all these guys on the field
However, as stated yesterday, I’m not convinced that Howard, Scott or Wimbley (any of them) are stout run defenders. all the more reason to add a nose tackle!

Coach Steve Spagnuolo joined GM Billy Devaney in shooting down rumors of the Rams’ interest in trading the No. 33 pick for Donovan McNabb.
“There’s nothing to that,” Spagnuolo said. “We’re not involved in that. At this time of year, there are going to be all kind of things thrown out there. But no, there’s nothing to it.” Though the Eagles certainly appear ready to move on from McNabb, the Rams aren’t biting.

Except for Eugene (he really got a 2nd round tender?), we know these other 2 cats can play and play well. Mitch can be used in 3 safety packages & special teams, but most safeties taken in Round 2 are guys you expect to start for you in Year #2, if not Year #1

Despite an earlier report that the Raiders have contacted the Eagles about a possible Donovan McNabb trade, the Oakland Tribune cites two team employees as being “unaware” of any trade talks.
Considering Al Davis’ usual M.O., it certainly wouldn’t come as a surprise if certain employees were left in the dark. Davis tends to make bold, aggressive moves, so an interest in McNabb would suit his style. The 49ers could take a page from his book, as a McNabb trade is exactly what they need. Coach Mike Singletary conceded as much Wednesday, saying “there’s always interest” in a QB of McNabb’s caliber.

I wish we could trade Tommy Kelly & JaMarcus Russell to Buffalo for Marcus Stroud & Trent Edwards.
they are switching to a 3-4 defense and Stroud already said that he is not a 3-4 NT. Moving him to 3-4 DE might be like Warren Sapp as a 3-4 DE in Oakland (highly ineffective). Kelly was a pretty good 3-4 DE in Oakland though!
Bills started Fitzpatrick & Brohm over Edwards last year and the Raiders started Gradkowski & Frye over Russell last year. Perhaps both plays need a fresh start?
obviously both Raiders would be asked to take huge paycuts though. Buffalo wouldn’t want to inherit those massive contracts for players who never lived up to their potential
March 25th, 2010 at 9:11 am
hell I would trade a 2nd for McNabb in a second. For one thing it would fill some seats, and provide a bit more excitement around and within the team. There are currently no stars on this team, none. Nnamdi is great but is not exactly a ‘draw’. In addition DM is currently better than the other 3, and if he shows some interest in attempting to develop JR as well, then what the hey. Bring on TO too; we gotta party!
March 25th, 2010 at 9:11 am
Check out Raiders coach Tom Cable. He addressed the Donovan McNabb-to-Oakland rumor before anyone knew it may be a rumor.
At the NFL owners meeting Tuesday, Cable was asked if the Raiders would consider trading for a veteran quarterback — say, McNabb or anyone else — to add to the competition.
Cable shrugged, kind of smiled and said, “You never know.”

I don’t. One season as a starter on a hodge podge injuriy riddled, aged, uncohesive, under performing O line doesn’t make you a wash immediately. If he gives up the edge 5 times by game 4 WITH Gallery back, then you have to start looking at shuffling.
I say BS to “not drafting a RT that high”. BS. Tackles right and left are at a premium.
I’m sure KC didn’t go “lets get Branden Albert 13th overall so we can make him a guard and then use a top 5 pick for a LT!”
If you think you’ve got a blue chip lineman on the edge (right or left)that can anchor for a decade you pull the trigger.

some guy was on the radio stating okung would be the pick if available, and henderson moved to RT
March 25th, 2010 at 9:45 am
Kwame was a LT for the niners.
Sapp was also a flop as a 4-3 UT.
Satele was a flop as a power blocker, and more so.
Barnes has not yet flopped as a RT.
Russell was better than Lawton at FB.
And you forgot HUFF WAS A FLOP AT SS!
And Condo is a LB flop. Needs cutting.
March 25th, 2010 at 9:47 am
And so far…….
Bo is a flop, because the Raiders haven’t traded DMAC yet
March 25th, 2010 at 9:49 am
Russell was better than Lawton at FB.
——————————————————-
One of the best plays of last year was a JLH reverse that featured Russell blocking out in front of him.
It only makes sense for that play to be called at least once a game.
Again speaks to the utter lack of creativity by Cable. Like a little misdriection with a 300lb lead blocker wouldn’t have worked, lol.
March 25th, 2010 at 9:50 am
Other postion movements that went well:
Scott = non-flop at LB.
Gallery = expensive non-flop moving to G.
Nnamdi = non-flop from S to CB.
Jamarcus = non-flop moving from disaster relief coordinator to walrus to king.

FS Branch
SS Mitchell
= still a huge gamble
I’m hesistant to move players around. I remember Tyler Brayton played here 4 seasons and played a different position each year. DE, OLB, DE & DT. Then he played the past 2 years as DE for the Panthers and just got a new 3 year contract to remain starting DE there.
==================
So what? Brayton still sucks.
=================
remember having RT Kwame Harris play LT in the zbs? flop
================
True, but a gamble worht taking. It was felt a return to the ZBS Kwame was drafted for by SF and run successfully by him there would help. It did not. The problem was Kwame’s head, not the scheme.
=====================
remember zone corner CB DeAngelo Hall play man2man corner? flop
===================
He did not play man. he played off…15 yards off. Horrible horrible…thank you Kiffin.
===================
how about power blocking center failure Samson Satele in the zbs? flop
================
Not a costly move to aquire him and yes, he’s been a disapointment with reads and lack of field vision. Hope we replace him cuz he’s not good but has played ZBS before so again, not a huge leap to assume he could. He needs more time to see if he can learn the position. Little slow me thinks to translate it to game time.
================
how about UT penetrator-type Warren at NT next to Kelly? flop
===================
Again, another calculated risk. Warren did better in Oakland than he had since early Cleveland. Dinged alot and part of a terrible anti run team so yeah, could do better.
================
how about Sapp as 3-4 DE? flop
===============
The whole idea was a flop not just Sapp’s inability to translate. Wrong personnel at the time, but Sapp had some production here.
==================
how about moving Khalif Barnes to RT or guard? flop
=================
Wouldn’t know that. He hasn’t done it yet.
===================
how about RB Gary Russell at FB or RB/TE/WR Marcel Reece at FB or even KR? flop
=================
G.Russell was a hail Mary stop gap. Lorenzo forced to retire last minute, Oren couldn’t go, Lawton’s practice squad at best. Same with inexperienced Marcel who caught maybe ONE pass all year on like 5 total plays.

the list goes on & on …

Barnes got 2 starts at RT and failed, so Cable threw Erik Pears in there for the next 2 starts before Cornell Green was back healthy.
Barnes & Pears also spent time at LG to help fill the void left by Gallery. both flopped there so Satele, Morris & even Langston Walker (the most impressive) got a chance to play LG …
Barnes wasn’t hurt the entire year. We was back by Week 2 and he couldn’t beat out any of the O-Line scrubs we had last season

Semantics to try and “Win” your point. Barnes ISN’T a flop at RT because of a few plays at at position he’s not properly trained for.
“I said he hasn’t done it yet” meaning proven it at RT either way. Not that he “never” played there.
He was mistaken and should be thankful he’s got a job. No one lese jumped at him did they and the “pass happy” NFL is desperate for LEFT tackles like Barnes.
He better get happy himself, shut up and play well at RT, RG, LT or whereever along OUR line!

yep. pears was awful as well, except in short running situations as you stated when he lined up outside one of the tackles as extra blocker/TE. you’re right on henderson too. that is the point i was trying to make last week when i stated no qb would have great success behind these guys. gallery was our best lineman, and hardly played. that is sad. i hoping that orakpo got into henderson’s head temporarily. he did play well in the 08season. last year, 10 sacks is just too many. any qb behind these guys, is going to have it in thei heads, that these guys suck.

ok. understand. can you imagine satele with his head bobbing trying to snap on an important FG or a punt from the endzone.
i also happen to think that cooper carlisle was equally as bad as green and pears. there were a great many 3 and 2 yards or less, in which carlise got tossed like a cookie into the backfield almost every time they ran his way. he must go as well
March 25th, 2010 at 10:19 am
Guys, the RT position is not just for guys who can’t cut it at LT. You need to be a very solid run blocker, which was Green’s best contribution. Henderson is generally a poor run blocker, mediocre at best when Gallery is next to him.
Putting Mario at RT is not smart.
March 25th, 2010 at 10:20 am

I did not hear that. Treu was our second string center as well as long snapper, which opened a roster spot. I like the concept.
March 25th, 2010 at 10:23 am
also with condo after a punt, he is normally around the ball rather quickly. which is sad when you have gunners out there. this guy might be one of the few who actually do their job well. in my opinion this guys is dead on accurate on his snaps. once in a while watching other games, you’ll see a slightly high snap on a punt in which the punter has to jump. or on an FGA which throws the timing off. this guy puts the ball on the money, in the same spot all the time.
March 25th, 2010 at 10:23 am
And what IS the point of the center head bobbing crap?! Satele, Morris and Newberry all have done that. Why is beyond me. Might as well just tell the D our snap count.
March 25th, 2010 at 10:24 am
I don’t think ANY of our o-linemen should feel safe…Henderson struggled, Gallery has a bad back, Satele is a weak ass punk, Cooper’s games has nosedived since 07, and Barnes/Pears at RT, give me a break.
How can we expect our QB, even Russell, to succeed behind a line like that? And our RBs would be fine…if they had a decent o-line.
The fukin o-line should have been worked on last year with a new C and T in the draft, but no, we had to add a third Safety and a WR that can’t fukin catch.
Damn it, there goes my blood pressure again.
March 25th, 2010 at 10:24 am

dakota that post is dead on. our oline played poorly the majority of the season. one game (pittsburgh) they played extremely well, and we saw the results. as i said, im all for whichever qb will lead us best, but can any of them have any reasonable success (wins) with these guys?

Agreed. Pouncey won’t be there at #39. I don’t think Bruce Campbell or Mt Cody will be either
My first choice would be:
LT – Henderson/Barnes
LG – Gallery/Walker*/Morris
C – Kevin Mawae*/Satele/Morris
RG – Bobbie Williams*/Carlisle/Morris
RT – Ciron Black*/Pears
If Mawae isn’t interested in coming here or isn’t a good fit for the zbs (at his age), then maybe we can draft that center from Boston College in Round 3?
March 25th, 2010 at 10:30 am
Can’t Jano long snap on punts? He outweighs Condo, and does have good “lowers”. LOL.
March 25th, 2010 at 10:31 am
i wouldn’t trade henderson. i think the way he played in 08 earns him a chance to compete for the job. he shut down mario williams and a few others that year. i think that is one of the reasons russell played well down the stretch that season. knowing your blindside is covered could be a mental hurdle for qbs. however, this past season, he played well until the last 6 weeks or so. orakpo (wash) killed him. i think for 4 of the 10 sacks he allowed, so 6 in 15 games, is not that bad.
March 25th, 2010 at 10:31 am
We also need to factor into the OLine debate whether Al has really told Cable that he wants a bit less zone and a bit more power. If so, that would help Walker and Barnes. If not, and the system stays the same, that favours Carlisle, Morris and Pears.
If the scheme has been amended to add more power, then we will have much more choice at the draft.

Anyways, who thinks Philly floated this idea in hopes it would raise Mcnabb’s value? It seems very logical ecspeacialy since we have an abundance of good safety’s as well as a 2nd round pick to part ways with. HMMMMM? I Like the idea of Mcnabb starting, and grooming Mr. Mohawk in the mean time. We need to win!

Even if we pass on an OT in the first, there are some good prospects in the second (Ducasse, Saffold and Veldheer), third (Fox, Young, Beadles) and even further down (Black, Marinelli, Landolt). This is the best OT draft for a decade and we need to restock on talent. If Cable starts to get fussy looking for ’system fits’, then he’s a one-dimensional idiot. Draft the talent and fit the system to the players – not the other way around.
And this is the best draft for OGs for a generation (Asamoah, Jerry, Petrus, Johnson, Newhouse, Carter).

Ideally, giving up a 2nd rounder and a mid level player would be ideal IMO.
March 25th, 2010 at 10:45 am
Our 2nd rounder plus one of our 5th rounds should be enough to get McNabb. Anything more without him agreeing to a 3 year extension is just too much.

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
Dude, I know you hate JR, but Trent Edwards???? Not only would the Bills give us Stroud, but they’d probabaly throw in Marshawn Lynch and Lee Evans too. And they’d probably let us keep TK. A more equitable trade would be TK and Grads for Edwards and Stroud.

PriestTJ,
This reply is in regards to you regarding post #230.
For the record, I hope that JR continues to do all that he needs to do to become elite and fulfill his potential. However, I have always taken issue with your excuses and lies. Didn’t you say that with a better supporting cast, JR would be a playoff QB?
Enjoy your hypocisy, you racist scumbag.

i asked about the 1st rounder because that is the alleged asking price for mcnabb. im on the fence with that. we could draft another dhb, you never know. if anyone asked last year if you’d rather pick dhb or trade for mcnabb, hindsight would say make the trade. these rookies get paid so much $$$ and don’t earn it. can we afford another 1st round bust? i wonder if all can trade a second and a third for a mid-late 1st round pick. as i have said, i dont follow college ball, but many of you think we can pick up some talent in the 2nd-4th rounds as well so, maybe a trade of the 1st pick would not be so bad. just sit back and wait and see i guess.

ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio believes the situation in Philadelphia has reached the point where Donovan McNabb “can’t possibly succeed” in 2010.
Sal Pal pointed out that the Eagles made McNabb “the lamest of lame duck quarterbacks,” alienated him, and “undermined his moral authority in the locker room” by not extending him beyond 2010 while entertaining trade talks. The situation appears to be beyond fixing, and McNabb’s comments indicate that he’s ready to move on to a new team. The 49ers may be emerging as a “darkhorse” candidate.

BoSchembecklerJackson,
I think someone will have to check the archives to make sure, but I’m almost 100% certain that one of my very first posts after seeing your “Trade DMAC” posts was as follows:
“Trade DMC for DMC?”
I always call McFadden “DMC” rather than DMAC and I was being silly, referring to us trading McFadden to ourselves FOR McFadden, but nevertheless… it could have been very psychic on my part if we DO trade DMC for Donovan McNabb (DMc).
I’m bored…

We will never have a WR get more than 600 yds. without a new oline AND qb. Dez or no.
March 25th, 2010 at 11:43 am
we’ll be lucky if we dont get five dbs with our first five picks.
March 25th, 2010 at 11:50 am
CJ,
If we go back to the Shotgun, and spread out 4 WRs, that puts Russell back in his comfort zone.
I even think Gradkowski can do some things in tha type of offense.
Takes all the other teams big guys and run stuffers off the field and keeps them in a dime defense.
I think we just MIGHT have an advantage.
Also, DMAC as one of the WRs and Bush in the backfield works.

LIST OF WHO YOU THINK AL WILL ACTUALLY PICK, FOR WHATEVER REASON..NOT who you want, but what direction you predict Al is going to go..can make sense, can make no sense whatsoever.
No guts, no glory. Don’t say LATER that you “knew he was going to get him” if you don’t predict it in advance.
If you do, the punishment is you have to have Kelli be your realtor in your next realty deal.
That will teach you

Anyways the rumors are he wants to go to AZ, ( he spends his offseason time there) or Minnesota.
March 25th, 2010 at 12:58 pm
I would have NO problem with picking Dez with the #8 overall pick.
Dez is a baller with good speed, route running, body control, physical toughness, and more importantly he has HANDS!
The WR position does not have major money being allocated right now except for DHB, but his contract will be restructured down anyway within two years due to him not being productive enough to warrant that kind of money and heck you never know in 4 years he might even wind being cut!
Having a WR corp of Dez, Chaz, and Murphy with DHB as the backup or 4th WR is not bad.
JLH can just focus on punt returns with Miller and battle with DHB for that 4th spot. The loser of the punt return battle gets cut.
