Rumors persist about Asomugha to Eagles in trade for McNabb

By Steve Corkran

An ESPN report Friday said that the Raiders are “open” to including cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha as part of the compensation in a trade for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb.

The Raiders, for their part, said there’s nothing to the report, which came on the heels of a ProFootballTalk.com post Thursday that floated the idea. The two Raiders employees also maintained that they are unaware of the Raiders even contacting the Eagles about McNabb.

A Yahoo! Sports report said that Asomugha’s representatives shot down the notion that Asomugha would be part of a deal for McNabb. Then again, the Raiders could make a trade that includes Asomugha without his knowledge because he doesn’t have a no-trade clause.

McNabb’s agent, Fletcher Smith, told the Philadelphia Daily News on Friday that the Eagles and McNabb haven’t discussed a trade. Again, they don’t have to do so.

What’s it all mean? Not much until someone other than Smith puts his name to one of the myriad quotes attributed to unnamed sources. Until then, it’s all just part of the typical offseason banter native to the slow part of the NFL offseason.

That doesn’t mean McNabb won’t be traded, and it doesn’t mean that he won’t wind up with the Raiders at some point. The Raiders are far from set at quarterback with JaMarcus Russell, Charlie Frye and Bruce Gradkowski.

McNabb would provide an instant upgrade for the Raiders and take pressure off Russell from performing at a level much higher than he did last season or in 2009 when he was the unquestioned starter.

The Raiders have plenty of ammo to pull off a trade for McNabb, especially if the asking price is a second- or third-round draft pick. But trading Asomugha just doesn’t make much sense from the Raiders standpoint, given they are more than a 33-year-old, worn-down quarterback away from being a legitimate playoff contender. They would need both McNabb and Asomugha, as well as a few more proven veterans.

and get a few guards in free agency.

Bobbie Williams, Randy Thomas, Shawn Andrews, Ben Hamilton are available. Or we could always re-sign Langston Walker?

  • Scottish Raider

Zero point drafting Campbell at No8. Chances are that he will be on the Board when we draft in the 2nd. He is probably at least sixth in the other 31 teams OT rankings behind Okung, Buluga, Davis, Williams and Brown. Suspect some teams even have him behind Staffold and Veldheer.

Hwnrdr: Let’s assume that Al Davis will return as Owner/GM for the 2010 season …

under what circumstances would you purchase season tickets?

what would we have to do via draft & free agency to convince you that this team is getting serious about winning?

    Rockstar…

I don’t know who the Raiders are going to take, let alone the other 31 teams. All I know is that Charles Brown is universally regarded as a first-round draft choice, and that there are ZBS teams out there (Green Bay, for example) that are trying to keep their quarterbacks alive for another season that would leap at the chance to draft him.

  • RaiderRockstar

    Scottish –

is Bruce Campbell even better than:

Selvish Capers, Ciron Black, Kyle Calloway or Jason Fox?

  • edward teach

Neilb… I’d do that deal. She probably has a couple of good years left.

  • M Lonetree

    ScottishRaider,

isn’t the Campbell clan considered traitorous in Scotland?

  • RaiderRockstar

ET: if Charles Brown is every bit as good as you describe, then why is he a projected late 1st rounder?

    why not Top 10?

why is he rated the 5th or 6th best tackle in the draft?

  • Scottish Raider

To get Suh we would need to trade up to No2. That would mean giving the Lions picks equivalent to 1400 points on the value chart – in other words, our 2010 1st, 2nd and 3rd, plus our 2011 2nd. Given that we have already given up our 2011 1st, it just won’t happen.

  • NoMoreFargas

Keep thinking Campbell won’t go at #8 Go back before last years draft everyone in here said same thing about DHB at 7# if you’re a Raider fan you know Al will do whatever he wants and could care less what anyone else thinks.

It’s a good idea Edward Teach. You’ve always got someone on the team who can sing the national anthem if needed.

Rockstar… depends on who you listen to. Also, he’s a ZBS guy and not as heavy as some of the others.

Here’s Wes Bunting’s report from National Football Post, with Okung, Davis, Bulaga and the others as well:

Neil: glad you’re back, if even just for this week

ET: I like Charles Brown, but do you honestly think 7-8 OL get selected in the 1st round this year ???

Okung, Williams, Davis, Bulaga, Campbell, Brown, Puncey, Iupati, etc

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Rock, what up BRO??? Considering our player “personnnel dept” the raiders would reach this far…

  • RaiderRockstar

ET: look at the mocks I posted (post #852)

would you be upset if happened that way?

  • M Lonetree

    Neilb,

no way, if you have a Ndamukong you also gotta have a Nnamdi. It’s the law.

  • edward teach

Scottish… I agree. I would be the dumbest move possible. I was just responding to neilb’s Praetorian Guard comment.

true, but what about eche? remember him ?

  • Thec07

I like SUH, however he is one man. If we have to give up all those picks i would pass. Also trading Aso would create another hole on the defense. We should be Aso and Woodson.

  • RaiderRockstar

    good morning Thec!

    yeah. I know what you’re saying…

I wouldn’t put it past Al Davis to draft OT Zane Beadles in the Top 10 and then say “he’s the player we wanted. We wanted to snag him before another team did”

    projected 5th rounder.

  • Scottish Raider

Neilb, nice idea. Suspect that Nnamdi’s contract would be the stumbling block on that deal. Nnamdi might be tempted to renegotiate a lower deal with a genuine contender (Eagles, Vikings, etc.) but he won’t for a no-hoper like Detroit.

The only possible way would be a multi-player/pick offer. Something like our 2010 1st and 3rd plus Howard, Bush and our 2011 3rd. Even then I can’t see the Lions being interested.

  • edward teach

I’d be fine with either one, Rockstar. They both address the positions that need the most attention.

I just hope everybody’s happy with Kyle Wilson :)

    ROFLMAO…….

  • hwnrdr

    Rockstar,
I made a committment to this team at the end of last season by saying that I will renew for this year. However, if it starts to go south, I will sell my tickets (well, not all, but will choose the games that I will go to) and possibly not renew for 2011.
What would AL have to do this offseason? Al will have to draft at #8 the best on board. I would say tackle on both sides, but that probably won’t happen. Who knows, maybe Al is getting serious about his statement of getting back to the SB before he passes on….
I tell you what though…if for some strange aligning of the planets happen and Suh is in Silver and Black this season…I will renew in 2011 already!!!

  • http://www.safc.com/page/StadiumofLightDetail/0,,10281~1706060,00.html neilb

Yes everyone I know it won’t happen.I just keep thinking what’s the point of having the best corner in the league if the other team can run all day.

We don’t even put Nnamdi on the #1 WR….

  • Scottish Raider

    Rockstar,

I like Kyle Calloway and Jason Fox. Wouldn’t mind one of those in the 4th or Tony Washington or Zane Beadles. They don’t have the physical gifts of Campbell (or maybe the upside) but they certainly have better film.

Not so convinced about Selvish Capers and Ciron Black – unless they were around in the 5th or 7th.

  • Thec07

I heard talk on pft the rumor monger site that we were looking at sage rosenfelds. If we are truly looking for a qb why not take a run at Troy Smith. He would only cost a 5th rounder…

  • RaiderRockstar

I just hope everybody’s happy with Kyle Wilson

    ***

if we trade Nnamdi Asomugha before or on draft day you know Al Davis will draft Kyle Wilson!

and like Charles Brown, Kyle Wilson is a consensus sure fire 1st rounder. crap. keep N21 at all costs!

Thec, don’t see Spiller making it past Seattle. If you want an RB, the best value is at the bottom of the 2nd – Hardesty, McKnight, Gerhart. One of them might be around when we pick in the 3rd.
