Rumors persist about Asomugha to Eagles in trade for McNabb

An ESPN report Friday said that the Raiders are “open” to including cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha as part of the compensation in a trade for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb.

The Raiders, for their part, said there’s nothing to the report, which came on the heels of a ProFootballTalk.com post Thursday that floated the idea. The two Raiders employees also maintained that they are unaware of the Raiders even contacting the Eagles about McNabb.

A Yahoo! Sports report said that Asomugha’s representatives shot down the notion that Asomugha would be part of a deal for McNabb. Then again, the Raiders could make a trade that includes Asomugha without his knowledge because he doesn’t have a no-trade clause.

McNabb’s agent, Fletcher Smith, told the Philadelphia Daily News on Friday that the Eagles and McNabb haven’t discussed a trade. Again, they don’t have to do so.

What’s it all mean? Not much until someone other than Smith puts his name to one of the myriad quotes attributed to unnamed sources. Until then, it’s all just part of the typical offseason banter native to the slow part of the NFL offseason.

That doesn’t mean McNabb won’t be traded, and it doesn’t mean that he won’t wind up with the Raiders at some point. The Raiders are far from set at quarterback with JaMarcus Russell, Charlie Frye and Bruce Gradkowski.

McNabb would provide an instant upgrade for the Raiders and take pressure off Russell from performing at a level much higher than he did last season or in 2009 when he was the unquestioned starter.

The Raiders have plenty of ammo to pull off a trade for McNabb, especially if the asking price is a second- or third-round draft pick. But trading Asomugha just doesn’t make much sense from the Raiders standpoint, given they are more than a 33-year-old, worn-down quarterback away from being a legitimate playoff contender. They would need both McNabb and Asomugha, as well as a few more proven veterans.

I am hoping this draft does not make me tun it off after the first Rd , but i have this feeling we are going to do something very stupid….

  • http://i380.photobucket.com/albums/oo249/the408RAIDER/749px-I-420svg.png 408RAIDER

We’re going to need at least 6 or 7 qb’s with that Oline.

    No onion jokes please.

What will be interesting this year is whether the spread over three days changes the draft. There is a school of thought that says the longer analysis time between first and second rounds and between third and fourth rounds will greatly increase the number of deals. Times get more time to assess who is still on the Board and more time to negotiate swaps and trades.

This could be a very volatile draft.

    Thec….

Why would this year be any different from any other ?

    True! lol

    Thec07…
Nah, we did that last year…but then again!!!
    Hey 408…6 or 7 qbs? I wouldn’t be surprised…
BTW: How did you do that hiragana/kanji characters?

  • Thec07

Neilb, The question you ask is very puzzling. I keep saying to myself, yeah this is the year we will finnaly draft for the trench, as the NFL has experienced a paridigm shift in that the “true skill palyers” are the trench guys. Those are the guys that are worth more. I think we get hung up on our galery pick and say no more Oline or Dline in the 1st or second. the guys coming out of college now are “pro ready” look at how many guys actually start on both sides of the ball that we passed on for the likes of
    DHB = Hands of stome
    JRUSS = BRL
    DMAC = No swivel

I just hope we can turn it, but the facts are we wont, and i will Bl0w some s#!T up….

  • RaiderRockstar

Sage Rosenfels was pretty good in Houston. his completion percentage was off the charts.

    24 TD’s & 23 INT’s though for the Texans in a 3 year span …

6’4″ 224 lbs 10 year vet with a strong arm.

did virtually nothing his first 6 years in the league. Didn’t even throw a pass for Minny last year after they traded a 4th rounder to get him. (thanks to Brett “iron man” Favre)

  • Thec07

I need to use spell check… Damn learn how to spell Bro…

  • RaiderRockstar

Sage Rosenfels could be the next Rich Gannon.

he’s 32 years old. the Raiders would be his 5th NFL team. showed flashes in Houston

but unless we fix the O-Line he’ll do no better than Bruce or Charlie …

  • Thec07

“IF” we are going to get a QB, Troy Smith is the logical choice. He has a relathionship with our OCO and could easliy supplant all the QB’s we have. He would only cost us a 5th rounder….

  • http://www.safc.com/page/StadiumofLightDetail/0,,10281~1706060,00.html neilb

    Thec…

You could be right about #76.Kinda “once beitten twice shy”.

I’ve spoke a lot about trading for Suh but to be honest I’d take anyone who would produce from day 1.

  • Thec07

speaking of OCO, is jackson going to run the ZBS, or is he going to go in a diffrent direction?

  • http://www.safc.com/page/StadiumofLightDetail/0,,10281~1706060,00.html neilb

I’ll have that spell check after you Thec.

  • RaiderRockstar

Minny only traded a 4th to get Sage and then they didn’t use him.

maybe we can get him for a 5th?

I’d take Sage Rosenfels over Troy Smith 10 times out of 10!

if Minny accepted that offer it would be like trading Derrick Burgess for Wimbley & Rosenfels (2 starters)

and we could even re-sign Burgess this offseason if we wanted to. LOL! thats what we did with Doug Gabriel. traded him to New England. they released him. we got him back the next year. 1 year rental plan :)

  • hwnrdr

    Now that…is a good question!!!

    DHB,Dmac and JaMarcus…..

Do you think Al looks at them and thinks Michael,Emmitt and Troy ?

  • Thec07

I would mind us drafting all olinemen….
It would give our offense a chance to score.
If we dont draft for trench warfare we will go 5-11.

RB’s WR’s TE’s FB’s these positions are a dime a dozen. If you look at the ZBS denver ran, they put anybody ar RB and they produced.

If you have not in order,

    1. Solid O Trench
    2. Solid D Trench
    3. Good QB

You will win a lot of games…..Sounds sikmple but that seems to escape this franchise…

  • Thec07

that would depend on Mr. Davis vision. He may think his guys are better based on the 40 times….

I’d take Sage Rosenfels over Troy Smith 10 times out of 10!

    :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

I must disagree. Troy Smith is an unknown with talent. Sage has likely shown all he can do as a pro.

  • RaiderRockstar

Troy Smith has completed 48 of 89 passes thus far in his 3 years with Baltimore. completion percentage is under 54.

thats with solid coaching, solid running game, solid receivers and a solid O-Line.

the fact that the Ravens only tendered him at his original tender (5th round) speaks volumes. A backup QB is important in this league IMO. So basically if Flacco gets hurt, they’ll be happy to roll with John Beck instead of Troy Smith or maybe even some late round rookie this year …

  • RaiderRockstar

Troy Smith is Bruce Gradkowski version 2.0

    sorry fellas.

he may be better than JaWalrus, but who isn’t ???
