Why McNabb is a bad idea

On vacation last week, during which time it seemed by acclimation that it would be a good move for the Raiders to trade for Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb.

It was likened to a Rich Gannon move, picking up a respected leader in his 30s who would immediately upgrade the position and give the Raiders credibility where they need it most.

Check out McNabb’s career stat line and reputation as a winning player and it indeed seems like a no-brainer.

UPDATE: ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting the Raiders are the “team to beat” in regard to landing McNabb.

Without even getting into compensation, the McNabb as starter scenario isn’t ideal for the following reasons:

— Gannon came to the Raiders with young, fresh legs, the result of having spent a lot of time on the bench. McNabb somes in as a much older 33, having been sacked 357 times over the course of his career.

As a young buck, McNabb once rushed for 629 yards and had two other seasons over 460. He’s broken 100 yards over each of the last two years, but not by much.

Over the past five years, McNabb has played an entire 16 game season exactly once.

It’s conceivable the breakdown phase of his career is underway.

— For all the good McNabb did in 2009, remember his appearance in Oakland? Completed less than 50 percent of his passes (22 of 46), was sacked six times and hit many more times than that. Led the Eagles to nine points and lost to JaMarcus Russell.

At this stage of his career, McNabb simply doesn’t have the legs to escape a rush. Now imagine him playing behind a Raiders line which at the moment has as its starting tackles Mario Henderson on the left (faded down the stretch) and Khalif Barnes, backed up by Erik Pears, on the right.

Even if the Raiders draft a rookie tackle, there’s no guarantee he would start, and if he did, there would undoubtedly be some breakdowns during the break-in period.

And remember, the Eagles play a West Coast-style offense which emphasizes getting rid of the ball, while the Raiders want their receivers to run deeper routes.

— McNabb is due a $6.2 million roster bonus and $5 million in salary for the last year of his contract. If Russell is staying, that’s nearly $20 million tied up in two quarterbacks who can’t evade a rush as well as second-round tender Bruce Gradkowski.

With his age and contract status, McNabb is not the longterm answer to the Raiders problems. He’s a very expensive band-aid.

As for Jerry’s assesment that McNabb isn’t the longterm answer. I don’t think the Raiders are banking on McNabb beyond maybe 2 years if that. What they want in reality is an example of what it takes to be a real pro. From someone who’s been successful. He can show him how to execute against the variety of fronts that he will see and how to lead.

These other two guy’s are wannabes who just don’t measure up. It much better for Russell to see it from someone who’s been dominant and can still be great. That way he has no choice but to listen and learn from someone who’s willing to teach.

I totally agree with this. What I like about McNabb in this role is that the was the no. 2 pick in the draft and has had to deal with hater fans just like JR. There may not be a better role model in the league for him. It annoys the hell out of me to hear guys like Gannon and Jim Miller criticize Russell’s work ethic and praise Gradkowski. They identify with Grads because they were drafted in the lower rounds and had to scratch and claw to get what Russell got from the beginning. Boomer Esiason, another Russell hater, felt slighted because he didn’t go till the second round. All these guys just resent JR and can’t wait to tear him down. You never hear Phil Simms hating like those guys. The fact that he was picked no. 7 overall and understands the pressure of being picked that high is no coincidence.

how am i contradicting myself? a smart football fan wouldnt post up stats about one qb not being durable when the one u like hasnt proven to be.mcnabb was the #2 overall pick and has played like it. if he didnt make any of his wrs look better how did he get to all of those championship games early in his career? get over yourself with all the emotional crap. your reasoning makes no sense at all. the lines need to be fixed whether we get him or not. u have stated in the past that u felt grads could be the guy and that u like his potential. wouldnt his potential make him more than a stop gap or is that a contradiction of how u really feel? his potential is either good enuff to win or he isnt worth the time. u better off seeing if jr can be salvaged. a 2nd round pick isnt a kings ransom if thats what it takes and we dont know if mcnabb wouldnt want to play here. 3 did qbs get knocked out but only one was healthy at the end of the year and it wasnt your boy grads. now hows that for durability. u talk about me being emotional but question my knowledge of the game cuz i dont buy into your stat heavy bullsh!t. thats pathetic

    3. A knowledgeble football fan would know that a good RB makes the QB looks better. A good QB makes his receivers look better. It’s not a coincidence that Brady, Peyton, Brees, and now Rivers make no name receivers look alot better than they are. Over his 11 years career, McNabb has yet to make any of his no name receivers better. DeSean has proven to produce at every level. THAT IS A FACT.

I agree with some of your stuff, but you’re way off base with this statement. I don’t believe for a minute that Manning, Brady, Brees or Rivers made “no name” receivers look great. It totally goes both ways. All have had damn good receivers to throw to. Let’s take Brady for instance. Your basis for the above statement is Deion Branch? That guy was damn good! His main issue in Seattle was injuries. You really don’t think Seattle scouts looked at game film before giving him that big deal? C’mon man. And if Brady is so great and can make any receiver look good, why didn’t Chad Jackson pan out? The Pats traded up 16 spots to get the guy in the second round, and he turned out to be a bust. By your theory, he should be heading for Canton by now. And please try and tell me that Moss didn’t make Brady better. Before the record season when he threw 50 tds, he’d never thrown more than like 26 in a season. As far as the other guys, Manning has had Marvin Harrison and still has Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark. Look at all the early-round talent the Colts have invested in during Manning’s career. Brees benefits from a great offense put together by Sean Payton. Marques Colston, Reggie Bush and Robert Meachem are no slouches. And Rivers got to come along very slowly. Once he did get to play, they relied on LT before Rivers really came into his own. Doesn’t hurt to have Antonio Gates while you gain chemistry with a couple of 7-foot WRs. Oh, and Chris Chambers and Darren Sproles aren’t bad weapons either.

  • fat kidd

if you have a reciever like dhb why dont the raiders take advantage of his speed ?such as end around ,wide reciever screen , reverse etc.

  • armond

the funny thing is they call us apologists for jr yet we advocate bringin in mcnabb tho it MIGHT mean the end for russell. they dont want mcnabb here cuz they KNOW its the end for grads yet we are apologists! its not our money so why should we care how its spent? if it can be done then do it. it just goes to show that they wanna win THEIR way more than whats good for the organization. waste money dumpin jr instead of developing him right but a 2nd rnd pick is a kings ransom for DM. they said all season and early this year they just want to get some good qb play and now that their boy is in danger theyre backtracking. they said grads could be the guy but now that mcnabbs in play they see him as a stop gap. haha

I agree Armond. JR definitely created some of this. It just pisses me off that the Raiders haven’t done their part to build this thing around him. I’ve said it many times, and I’ll say it again. The Raiders had one of the worst offseasons of all time between 2008 and 2009. I think Al listened to Cable too much. We should have kept everything intact so we could build on the momentum we had and the end of 2008. Losing Knapp to Seattle, Brian Schneider to USC, bringing in Garcia and starting to rookie WRs ruined our season as far as I’m concerned. JR has work to do, but he needs help just like any other QB in the history of the league.

  • raidertbone

The main problem is that, for the last several years, the Raiders simply stopped being the Raiders — the fire, the swagger, the nasty attitude: all gone. Cable tried to bring the guys in and work fundamentals only during the early part of training camp (when he wasn’t beating the crap out of coaches and wives), but he had a young inexperienced receiving corps, a fat diva at quarterback, a defensive line like sand (Sands) and an offensive line that could barely push around a shopping cart. Now, we’re in Year Two of the “Cable Project”: with or without JaDavis Russell, we need to build the two lines. Trent Williams is ready to step in and make an impact on the O-line; the DT from Texas would make a serviceable second round pick. We can’t be swayed by glamour and glitz — we’ve got to get back to being who we always were: teh team that everyone feared!

S&B: wow – never thought I’d hear you say that!

if we trade a 2nd rounder for McNabb …

    1st (NT) Dan Williams
    3rd (C) Matthew Tennant
    4th (T) Calloway or Fox
    5th (MLB) Micah Johnson
    5th (FB) John Conner

and get a few guards in free agency.

Bobbie Williams, Randy Thomas, Shawn Andrews, Ben Hamilton are available. Or we could always re-sign Langston Walker?

Back to the McNabb trade. I have changed my mind and decided it would be worth it IF we cut JaBling…

  • RaiderRockstar

Trent Williams is ready to step in and make an impact on the O-line; the DT from Texas would make a serviceable second round pick.

I would be more than satisfied with Trent Williams & Lamarr Houston in the first 2 rounds, but Houston would have to pack on about 10-20 pounds to play NT.

but what about QB? you said “with or without Russell” …

I think we could get Ciron Black in Round 3 and he’d be a starter at RT from Day 1

  • RaiderRockstar

good morning Hwnrdr, BCZ, 408, etc

  • morning RRS so hows the list looking?

  • hwnrdr

Bcz24…Yeah that would be but I seriously doubt JaBling will get cut…sad but true! I feel ya though. Russell, to me, doesn’t get it yet, and Grads…not sure if he can be healthy the whole year! But then again…will McNabb be?

  • RaiderRockstar

McNabb, Gradkowski & Frye = solid at QB

Russell, Gradkowski & Frye = awful at QB (because you know JR won’t be paid $9.5 million to ride the pine all year) especially not behind some veteran 3rd string journeyman types

Bruce & Charlie are better than JaMarcus, but who isn’t? That alone doesn’t guarantee us any more than 5 wins …

  • Good morning all.

Sorry Hwnrdr, had to get some coffee.

  • RaiderRockstar

since the Raiders seem to be the only team in “hot pursuit” of Donovan McNabb, I wonder what we could get him for?

do you guys think the Eagles would ever consider bringing McNabb back to Philly for 1 more season after all this mess? I don’t. What a slap in the face that would be to McNabb & Kolb!

Remember when the Patriots were the only team in “hot pursuit” of Randy Moss? we accepted a 4th rounder just to get rid of him!

I think the Raiders are smart to wait it out and drag this thing on & on. Eventually the Eagles will have to just take what they can get.

If he ends up on another team? oh well

trade a 5th for Troy Smith or Sage Rosenfels and move on with the “open competition” as originally planned

  • bcz24

I think including Asomugha and Samuels is too much though… give our 2nd for McNabb, OR give Asomugha straight up for McNabb. Nnamdi AND a second is way to much for McNabb. If we were a decent QB away from the Super Bowl I would say do it, but we have a lot of holes and McNabb is only going to bring us to the .500 region

  • Hey Rockstar, you gonna put me on your list ?!!

  • snnyjcbs

I read an article that had links to all the reports done by the media when many thought the 49ers were in the running for McNabb. They made McNabb sound as if he walked on water and all articles loved the move.

Next I read articles by many that wrote some of the articles about the 40ers with regard to MCnabb coming to the Raiders. All of a sudden McNabb has one foot in the grave and not a very good QB and it is a mistake for the Raiders to bring him in.

I had to laugh as one of the writers wrote that Denver signing Orton had Johnny U coming to Denver and the signing of Brady Quinn was the deal of the decade. It would kill many of these clowns if the Raiders ended up with McNabb as the articles show.
