The Raiders continue to be nomads in terms of a radio home after opting to go with a syndicator which will handle the rights to their games.
“The Raider Organization is delighted to announce an exciting new relationship with Compass Media Networks, pursuant to which Raider games will be broadcast in the Bay Area on KFRC 1550-AM and KITS Live 105-FM, as well as a broad affiliate network in California and beyond,” Raiders chief executive Amy Trask said. “We thank KSFO (560-AM) for its support of the Raiders for the past six years and wish it well.”
KSFO marketing director Anthony Licciardi made it clear the network had wanted to continue with Raiders broadcasts and weren’t dumping the club _ KTCT (now KNBR 1050) did in its last radio deal.
“We tried to keep the Raiders, we wanted to keep the Raiders,” Licciardi said. “Ultimately, they went with a syndicator, and the syndicator found them the best offer.”
Hard to believe the Raiders new setup could be any worse than it was on KSFO. Other than game day, there was virtually no Raiders content. Most NFL teams have radio deals which put their coaches on the air _ often to answer questions from the public _ and have regular features and interviews with players.
Much of the Raiders’ problems are their own. They’re so over-the-top in terms of controlling the message _ preferring an infomercial to critical or objective analysis _ it makes for bad programming other than the games themselves.
Here’s hoping syndication will make things better _ although it’s worth noting it was a radio rights issue (when Bob Speck Productions gave way to Nederlander Sports Marketing in 1993) that led to legendary voice Bill King leaving the Raiders when the club was in Los Angeles.
