The McNabb buzz: Pick your version

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, March 30th, 2010 at 7:53 am in Oakland Raiders.

The denials are coming in the same manner as the stories.

The Donovan McNabb-to-the-Raiders story is built on hushed whispers given in confidence, with Yahoo Sports! (Charles Robinson) and ESPN (Adam Schefter) leading the way with unnamed sources saying the Raiders are the leaders in the clubhouse for the Eagles’ quarterback and equally anonymous Raiders sources telling Steve Corkran there has been no contact between the teams.

A few possible scenarios:

A) Someone in McNabb’s camp is floating the Raiders as a primary suitor, knowing full well there will be no on-the-record public denial that comes from teams that actually deal with the media. It’s no accident the Raiders so often come up in free agency stories as an interested party _ and often are not.

This is perfect for the Eagles, who want the market to be rich with McNabb suitors and when asked about the Raiders interest, won’t say anything on the record but give a knowing nod and wink.

B) Al Davis wants McNabb and has explored the possibility, but has commissioned the Raiders denials as a way to drive down the Eagles asking price.

Let McNabb and his $11.2 million due bill this season marinate for awhile on the open market. As the draft approaches, and there are no other teams willing to cough up that kind of coin for a 2011 free agent, Davis could get himself a starting quarterback and not have to give up the No. 39 pick in the draft.

C) Davis’ inner circle is so tight that it’s possible for club employees to deny the story because they truly know nothing about it, and they’ve seen enough rumors come and go that never come to fruition to be comfortable in that assessment.

That leaves the possibility that both sides are right _ Davis is talking to the Eagles about McNabb and is the front-runner to land him, while the Raiders will have people in their own building who will be surprised when it actually happens.

D) It’s nothing more than a competitive media wildfire, with the the Raiders continuing disregard older talent and develop their own roster. McNabb will either wind up elsewhere or with the Eagles and the whole thing will at some point in the near future be yesterday’s “news.”

Whatever the reason, the McNabb story confirms what columnists and pundits have long known about covering pro football.

When in doubt, write (or talk) about the quarterback.

There’s an actual buzz around the Raiders for a change, and only time will tell if it is real or artificial.

I’m sure all things McNabb will be open for discussion for an on-line chat later today . . .

Dez Bryant, Chaz, and Murphy would be just the career break that a guy like Bruce Gradkowski would need. Gradkowski would be a pro bowler with those 3 plus Bush and DMAC out of the backfield.

I’m going to take a page out of Tom Cable’s play book …

We need to stay the course!

Fix the Oline, fix the Dline, and add a play maker.

Draft John Skelton in Rd 3.

    Rd 1 – Dez Bryant
Rd 2 – Best ZBS OT on the board
Rd 3 – QB John Skelton
Rd 4 – Best fat fucc DT on the board

Trade our 2nd round pick (unless you are afraid of losing that 5th round reach Al will use it for) for McNabb, cut Russell (he failed the offseason test, get him the fuk out of here) and save $18 million over the next two seasons. Use those savings to entice McNabb into a three year extension. Draft a tackle in round 1 and the best NT left in round 3, and the best G available in round 4.

What more can you ask for?

    5th (MLB) Micah Johnson
    5th (FB) John Conner

and get a few guards in free agency.

Bobbie Williams, Randy Thomas, Shawn Andrews, Ben Hamilton are available. Or we could always re-sign Langston Walker?

  • jhill

I think we all know Chaz is only good for abot 8 games. Had an injury history in college which is why he dropped to the what 7th round?

We can’t go with just Murphy again next year.

    Dez Bryant at 8!

  • RaiderRockstar

why do you guys (Jhill & Dakota) want to wait until Round 3 or 4 to address the run defense?

what kind of player do you think we can get there to actually improve this unit during his rookie campaign?

Cam Thomas, Torrell Troup or Travis Ivey ???

big dropoff in talent after Dan Williams & Terrence Cody come off the board (in Round 1)

  • RaiderRockstar

Jhill: we went with youth at WR last year by replacing Ashley Lelie, Ronald Curry & Drew Carter with Heyward-Bey, Louis Murphy & Nick Miller

now that Javon Walker is gone we need a veteran mentor type, not another youngster for Sanjay Lal to develop

    Muhsin Muhammad.

  • Kirk

    Draft offensive and defensive linemen.

    Forget about McNabb.

  • jhill

    RRS,

I just see the biggest issue with the team as the offense. And not just Russell. Oline and WR are in just as dire situations if not more than the QB position is.

At 8, you have to get an impact player first and foremost. I’d love for Suh, McCoy, Okung, or Trent Williams to be there, but I doubt they will be. Dez Bryant is the true #1 WR we need. There would be NO MORE 8 man fronts with Dez Bryant on the field.

Losing Cornell Green was step one. I like Barnes at RG and a guy like Ciron Black at RT. Just think the draft is deeper on the Dline and RT is a bigger need than NT.

  • RaiderRockstar

Kirk: are you expecting big things from JaMarcus this year or something ???

Suh, McCoy, Price, Houston, etc are all going to be great players, but none of them are true nose tackles imo

there are 5 in this draft and I listed them for you (post #14). Cam Thomas has potential, but thats a risky bet for a position that has been weak for 7 years and only William Joseph as a backup

I think you have to take Dan Williams or Terrence Cody at #8 and never think twice about it. run defense solved

The consensus around the NFL is that Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford had an impressive Pro Day on Monday. But even as he agrees with that assessment, NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock is offering up a cautionary tale of why coaches and general managers shouldn’t fall in love with a player based on what he does in shorts and a T-shirt.

“Let me give you an example of the other side of it,” Mayock said this morning on The Dan Patrick Show. “The best Pro Day I ever saw as a quarterback was JaMarcus Russell. . . . I’ve never seen a quarterback throw the football like that in my life, but I still couldn’t take him in the first round — the guy doesn’t care about football. He doesn’t have the passion for the game, doesn’t have the work ethic, I don’t want him. But by the way, it was a pretty impressive Pro Day.”

Exla: Bradford, Clausen, Pike, LeFevour & Tebow will all be better NFL QB’s than JaMarcus Russell.

I’ll take heat for adding Tebow in with that grouping, but I honestly think that if he goes to a team like New England and rides the pine for 2 years he’ll be the best QB of this draft class …

Mayock: JaMarcus Russell’s Pro Day a cautionary tale

Ultimately, Mayock said, teams can’t allow what they see in a workout to supercede what they see in game action.

“The tape work and the body of work in college has to take precedence,” Mayock said.

Fortunately for Bradford, Mayock says, his great Pro Day was only reinforcing his great play on the field at Oklahoma. And Mayock says that unless there’s a medical concern, there’s no reason Bradford won’t be the first overall pick in the draft.

most likely all of the McNabb rumors are the progeny of blogger extraordinaire, JerryMc.
he was bored one day and decided to whisper a name, Donovan McNabb.
it grew legs in and filtered on to other media outlets.
but our Fearless Leader can never admit he has done so because then whatever credibility he has as a journalist would be gone.
yet, he must be laughing inside to see how the monster has grown and how many hits this site has had despite being a dead dead dead time of year.

    good morning

I heard Todd McShay say those same things on the Herd this morning.

He said Russell had the best Pro Day he has ever seen and most likely will EVER SEE.

Said he really missed on Russell because Russell does not love the game.

Mayock will be in Lufkin, TX today for Dez Bryant’s private workout at Lufkin High School. Should be hearing some things about the WR later today.

Like Priest points out, he Mayock fails to mention his endorsement of Brady Quinn in rd 1.

Look, this is ridiculous. Russell’s stats in college had him as a damn near 70% passer. The tape and body of college work, ON TOP of the “best workour by a QB I’ve EVER seen” merits a 1st rd pick.

    Hindsight, huh?
