McNabb: I would have gone to Oakland
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, April 8th, 2010 at 4:09 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb refuted stories with unnamed sources which reported he would retire rather than play for the Raiders.
Talking with host Ryen Rusillo on the Scott VanPelt Show (ESPN Radio), McNabb was asked what he would have done had he been traded to the Raiders.
“I would have been at the workouts and working out with the team, throwing and trying to get the timing down with the corps of receivers and running backs they have and communicated with the offensive line to get ready for minicamp,” McNabb said.
When Rusillo asked about the threat to retire, McNabb at first laughed out loud.
“Retirement?,” he said.
McNabb went on to elaborate.
“This is the problem with some of these so-called key analysts and these smart guys out there who go by `sources.’ So many people listen to different sources `close to’ the individual, but never the individual, saying that I would have not showed up in Oakland, I would have been upset . . . hey, with my name always being in the media all the time because of trade talk, I’m just happy that it’s over. I don’t mind being on ESPN if it’s something positive for my play, not for where I’m going to land next. A lot of it was blown way out of proportion.”
Of course, having McNabb refuse to play for the Raiders is a much more interesting story than what is the more likely reality _ that Oakland simply is not getting older as a team but working at getting younger, and McNabb was never an option because of that philosophy.
Think about it.
Jeff Garcia and Lorenzo Neal never made it out of training camp last year. Greg Ellis was waived this offseason. Justin Fargas, a 30-year-old back in a 35-year-old body is gone. There was no effort made to talk with the likes of LaDainian Tomlinson and Terrell Owens, the types of Hall of Fame candidates the Raiders have looked to in years past.
The club has not come to a longterm deal with defensive end Richard Seymour, perhaps waiting to see if he’s started on the downside of his career but franchising him to hedge their bets.
If the Raiders really wanted McNabb, they would have made a serious offer and landed him. I’m not sure I buy the story that the magnanimous Eagles “did the right thing” by trading him to the Redskins even though McNabb remained in the division.
And last time I checked, although the Redskins direction is more promising with Mike Shanahan and Bruce Allen running things instead of Daniel Snyder, they were 4-12 last year. One game worse than the team that McNabb supposedly wouldn’t consider.
The reason the Eagles made the trade is because they’re comfortable with seeing McNabb twice a year. And because the Raiders are floated more often as a trade possibility than any other team because they never deny it, and occasionally are punching bags because of it.
You’d think this would close the book on the McNabb-to-Raiders story, but don’t count on it. It will be commonly accepted that McNabb refused to come to Oakland, regardless of what he or anyone else says.
It’s just one of those things the Raiders will have to endure until they change the storyline and start winning.
(Was out all morning taping a draft special for Comcast . . . thanks to the reader who told me about the interview).

Does anyone here still want Brandon Spikes in the 3rd or 4th?
I think we can trade down and get Charles Brown (best ZBS tackle) along with a 3rd rounder to pick up Spikes. If we can get a trade for Gaither (2nd rounder) then we swtich Charles Brown to Pouncey and our O line will look pretty good.

The only problem Theisman and other people in the press have with Russell is the money he’s making. Period, has nothing to do with his skills or work effort. It started in ‘07, when Russell and his agent were holding Al’s balls to the fire. The media and the league might hate Al, but they hate greedy players even more. Nobody loves this criticism of Russell right now more than Al Davis. It takes the blame away from him for how bad the Raiders are.
April 8th, 2010 at 4:17 pm
Does that mean that Al isn’t worried about JaMarcus justifying his faith in him anymore?
April 8th, 2010 at 4:17 pm
1. Pouncey
2. Brown
3. trade for haynesworth

Bad azz Jerry. Thanks. McNabb would’ve helped short term or until he got injured.
Like I said before, if Davis wants something, he’s got a pretty good track record of getting it.
If he’d really wanted McNabb he’d have gotten him.
I hope Russell is working very hard this off season.

You had said that, ‘Nobody loves this criticism of Russell right now more than Al Davis. Or simply that Al can rest a little easier knowing that JaMarcus is taking a lot of the heat for the Raiders being as bad as they’ve been?

I expect teams to reach so he may go in the 20s. Only played O line for 2 years and was a TE before that.
May just be scratching his potential, but he is a project. One with more upside than Campbell it seems, who shouldn’t go until the late 20’s either but someone could take a flyer.

I’ve given my reasons why Oakland shouldn’t take a DE in with the 8th but thats not saying it won’t happen.
I’m awed by JPP’s physical abilities but theres something about the way he runs, kind of knock kneed, that makes me think he’ll be prone to injury.
He’s got a lot of hip sway too that means back injuries and soreness will slow him to a mortal as well.
Not sure if he’s got the technique to compensate right away but man, what a physical specimen.
April 8th, 2010 at 4:36 pm
I’m a fan of Mike Lombardi. I know the story of him being fired and all, but I like his stuff. Seems fairly unbiased to me.
April 8th, 2010 at 4:37 pm
4eva,
Pray tell, what “horses” do “we” have that would make McNabb soooo inclined to happily come to Oakland?
April 8th, 2010 at 4:38 pm
lmao at all you doubters….the Raiders have been linked to TO, Vick and McNabb. If Al wanted them, they’d be here.

DHB number change cost less than $10,000
Posted by Mike Florio on April 8, 2010 4:07 PM ET
Plenty of you were intrigued by the news that Raiders receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey paid for the remaining inventory of unsold replica jerseys in order to change his number from 12 to 85, primarily since plenty of you were amazed that any such jerseys were made, or sold.
Per a league source, the price tag for the number swap was under $10,000.
But while Reebok got a reimbursement for black jerseys that soon will be absorbing the rays of the burning sun in one or more third world countries near the equator, the folks who paid for a DHB jersey bearing No. 12 will have no such luck.
At a minimum, Reebok should make available to the purchasers of the Heyward-Bey jerseys a replacement name plate that says stabler

Another DT prospect to watch out for come draft day:
Defensive Tackle Linval Joseph, East Carolina:
Overshadowed a bit at ECU by DE CJ Wilson and DT Jay Ross, Joseph is the one that has the most interesting blend of NFL size (6-5, 328) and athleticism. Scouts would like to see him put it all together and be a more consistent player, but his tools have some clubs talking about him as a potential 2nd round prospect.

Redskins take a look at Trent Williams
Posted by Mike Florio on April 8, 2010 7:41 PM ET
NFL Network draft guru Mike Mayock thinks that left tackle Trent Williams would be the best fit for the Redskins with the fourth overall pick in the 2010 draft. The Redskins seem to at least be willing to do their due diligence in this regard.
Chris Russell of 106.7 The Fan in D.C. reports that Williams has visited the Redskins.
The Redskins also have visited this week with Russell Okung.
Mayock believes that Williams is a better fit for the zone-blocking scheme that the Redskins are implementing, given that it requires more agility and quickness. Still, with a 33-year-old quarterback who has had nearly as many operations as Cavity Sam, pass blocking will be even more important. Russ Lande of Sporting News thinks Williams will be gone at No. 2, to the Lions; Nolan Nawrocki of Pro Football Weekly has concerns regarding Williams’ work ethic and bust potential.

Tim Tebow, QB, Florida
I’ve banged this overrated drum as loud as anybody not named Todd McShay. What is there to like about his game?
Arm? So-so.
Feel in the pocket? Awful.
Reading coverage? Stunted.
So we’re left with competitor and hard worker. Well, I’m both of those. Does that mean I can play quarterback in the NFL?
Don’t you get tired of hearing how hard a worker he is and how it will make him a better player? That’s an insult to a lot of other players in this draft. Don’t they work hard, too?
Either you can play or you can’t. The work will help make a good quarterback a great one. But it won’t make this kid an NFL starter for the long run.
He’s a fifth-round pick in my book, which is better than at least one NFL thinks. “Eighth or ninth round,” the coach said.
That means he’s not draft material.
I won’t go that far, but what I saw on tape isn’t pretty.

Here’s an exerpt from a good article by Pete Prisco on cbssports.com. I totally agree with his view on “work ethic”. Gradkowski lovers, read this article 10 times!!! The rest of the article is a great read too.

April 8th, 2010 at 4:51 pm
Our team has to go through certain changes in order to jump up from 5-11 to at least 8-8. Here is some of my thoughts maybe you guys can critique it.
QB: With Gradkowitzki being the front runner to win the starting job, the concerns are mostly can he do it for 16 games. If Grad gets hurt, JR will demoralize the Raider fans, therefore I think JR should get cut if he loses the open competition. Frye hasn’t been a winner ever since he came to this league, I doubt he can give us anything more then what JR gave us last year, I always saw him as a third QB not even a backup. We need someone who can at least move the chains and score some touchdowns, hopefully we either draft a QB or trade for Jason Campbell. Gradkowitzki is clearly not the best answer but he is all what we got now.
OL: I am not sold on Barnes, Walker, Morris, Cooper, Satele, Pears, etc. With the exception of Henderson and Gallery, I doubt any of those bums can hold or allow our RBs to penetrate opponents DL. There is a reason why teams always blitz against the Raiders. They know sooner or later those DLs will be able to collapse our OL. We need new bloods, this is the most important position for this team. Not only do we have a weak QB, but if our OL remains weak, might as well expect another season 5-11.
LBs: This position is still a mystery to me. Maybe some of you have better ideas. My confusion lies in the fact that Cable clearly states that Wimbley is going to be our starting SLB. He is not known neither for his tackling skills nor for his covering skills but he is known for his rushing capabilities. Does that mean Wimbley will be allowed to rush the QB along with our 4 DLs? That would leave us exposed in the middle and force both our safeties to play zone all the time. Can we expect the Raiders to become a 70% blitzing team like the Ravens or Jets? Regardless, Wimbley, a new MLB that I am sure we are drafting and Scott, they give us a solid unit in rushing the passer, can they cover who knows, but maybe if we still expect to have Morrison and Howard, we could switch our LBs back and forth depending on opponents strategies. We at least now have rushers and cover LBs in our team.
DL: Second year of having Seymour is going to be a blast. I think he returns back into his pro bowl form and show us that he is a worthy of our first rounder. Besides, he wants his final paycheck and that would motivate him. Matt and Seymour at DE with Richardson and whomever we get in the draft as our DE, that unit is solid. For those who think TK is any good, go watch the tape, the guy gets penetrated more then 60% of time he plays. HE IS GARBAGE. He is not a starter in this league, he had only one good year as a Raider, can he stop the run, we seen the answer, NO. We clearly need a new blood in here too, a true DT who is young motivated and can hold his attacker and his pants. Desmond Bryant might make an impact, but we clearly need depth in this position. The two bums we signed are worthless.
CB: Many of you think CJ is solid playing opposite the great Asmough. He has the Raider speed but he gets burned alot. He played better the first year he replaced moron DeAngelo Hall. Last year, CJ sucked. Routt in my opinion is better option, he can’t play the nickle but you put him in CJ position outside, the guy can cover man to man. Can CJ play the nickle, yes he can. He did it before, but we also need at least another corner. Holland Wr to CB is a two year project, draft a young guy or get him as undrafted rookie.
ST: Our ST sucked last year, we couldnt stop opponents KR/PR. Our Kickers are the best in the league, but our unit need to get better. Why are we paying Ekujuba or whatever his name is top money? I think AL should try drafting players who can play ST in the lower rounds.
FA: Jerry said that the Raiders are waiting for the market to cool down before signing any player. I think we should sign right now as the market is as cold as it gets. After the draft, some teams might compete with us for the services of the players we need. We clearly need a WR, FB, DL, CB, RT, RG, C, etc. I think the Raiders need to sign Mawae, Chester Pitts and T.O for less then $10 mill a year. Each player might be happy with the one year deal offered at this time. Mawae and Pitts could be had for less then 4 mill and give T.O a one year 5 mill deal. Does AL have the money, I think he does.

Did Eagles trade McNabb so Redskins wouldn’t draft Bradford?
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 8, 2010 12:31 PM ET
Why did the Philadelphia Eagles trade their starting quarterback, Donovan McNabb, to the division rival Washington Redskins? The trade could have been motivated in part to keep Washington from drafting Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford.
At least, that’s the theory floated by Adam Schefter of ESPN, who reports that multiple NFL executives firmly believe that the Eagles wanted to block the Redskins from taking Bradford. The executives Schefter talked to say the Eagles are high on Bradford and don’t want to have to play against him twice a year for the next decade.
So the Eagles figured that if they shipped McNabb to Washington and took two draft picks from the Redskins in the process, they’d make the Redskins less likely to want to draft a quarterback and also take away some of the picks the Redskins would have needed to move up and take Bradford.
There’s a perception among many league observers that teams shouldn’t make trades within their divisions because it’s dangerous to strengthen a divisional opponent’s roster. But maybe the Eagles think that what really would have strengthened the Redskins is drafting Bradford.

I said this from the beginning – there was never a shred of evidence that the Raiders were even remotely interested in McNabb. There is no journalistic integrity in sports and yet people still buy into this crap. You can believe something AFTER it happens in this world. I cant believe Jerry still wants to beat this dead horse any more.

Seymour HAS NOT signed a long-term deal yet. If he is not coming close to signing…they have to do something…otherwise they would have given away a 1st rounder for NOTHING!!!!
Either get Seymour signed or do a swap for haynesworth.
Seymour is a 3/4 DE and Haynesworth a 4/3 DT….so the Redskins would be open to doing it.
Again, if seymour is not going to sign that long term deal…make the swap now

April 8th, 2010 at 7:34 pm
I understand why people would be hesitant to bring in Haynesworth. I am concerned more about the contract status of Richard Seymour. Right now, we’ve just franchised him.
ALl I am saying is if the negotiations are honestly moving forward…than you definitely stick with Seymour…but if Seymour is balking…or asking for QB money or something like that…then you have to do something because you gave up a 1st round pick.
You have to do something…you can’t blindly go into the year with Seymour just on franchise tag.
So don’t let pride get in the way…if he is not going to be signed…get some value…and Haynesworth, problems and all, is better than NOTHING
April 8th, 2010 at 7:37 pm
Here’s the thing, The media hates our team. Our team represented for so long, Screw the World.
Unfortunately that same type of thinking has screwed us.
April 8th, 2010 at 7:39 pm
Raiders4eve,
I agree with the assesment on the QB. Gradkowski is the best we have…but he’s also a very competitive guy too…a no-holds barred competition would do him a world of good…as you said, bringing in Campbell would be an excellent solution for Oakland.
I, too, don’t get the LB situation. Scott and Wimbley are pass rushers…and I hope that the play calling doesn’t leave those guys exposed in coverage. Right now, the Raiders rely a lot on linebackers in coverage…even having Howard line up with receivers…so they have to adjust the scheme (which needs to be adjusted anyway) if Wimbley, Scott and a thumper is placed at MLB
Total agreement with the DTs
I am actually okay with Chris Johnson. He’s been burned a few times..but that’s going to happen when you run a predictable defense that is in man2man 60 to 80% of the plays…..even Nnamdi occassionally gives up a pass here and there…they need to modernize the defense…look at Fabian Washington…sure he’s no stud…but he looked helpless out there…with Baltimore he’s a competent starter….fix the scheme
Special teams is a disaster and I blame coaching. Schneider had those boys playing….also having a fullback returning kickoffs was the height of incompetence for a team that drafts all these 40x speedsters
April 8th, 2010 at 7:41 pm
Haynesworth is not worth the trouble or the money.

April 8th, 2010 at 7:45 pm
Go thoughts SnB
how do you think we solve the LB situation? I think coach Marshall will switch back n forth between Wimbley n Scott and start Howard. I just can’t see two rushing LBs starting with a rookie MLB leaving him exposed in the middle.

Seymour Bush Says:
April 8th, 2010 at 7:41 pm
Haynesworth is not worth the trouble or the money.
======================================================
But he does have talent and the Redskins already paid the freight for him..
All I am asking is what’s happening with Seymour’s contract.
We better not be here next year bemoaning the outright loss of Seymour or hoping he reconsiders or yelling at Al Davis for paying him top 5 QB money
That’s my big concern…not so much haynesworth….
Most teams wouldn’t have a player of caliber to trade for a 3/4 DE in his last year.
Remmeber, Davis gave up our 1st round pick in 2011
April 8th, 2010 at 7:50 pm
Raiders4eve,
Like the Corner situation…Marshall has to do even more surgery with the scheme. Right now the Raiders have a “beat your man” mentality, which is fine if you’ve got 11 bosses running around out there.
They can’t be predictable on defense (see Philly gm)…they have to mix in more zones and they have to allow Nnamdi to follow the best receiver
So, basically its about modernizing the scheme.
Otherwise it will be the same ol same ol…and I don’t look forward to seeing Scott in man converage
April 8th, 2010 at 7:51 pm
If you frachise a player twice…they become a top 5 player….we already pay Nnamdi a mint and others.
The Raiders cannot afford to franchise Seymour twice….so they better sign him..otherwise swap with the Redskins while the iron is hot
April 8th, 2010 at 7:52 pm
Does anyone here still want Brandon Spikes in the 3rd or 4th?
I think we can trade down and get Charles Brown (best ZBS tackle) along with a 3rd rounder to pick up Spikes.
If we can get a trade for Gaither (2nd rounder) then we swtich Charles Brown to Pouncey and our O line will look pretty good.
I think Brown is an early 2nd or late 1st. Also, I checked the stats, CJ got beat for more than 900 yards last season, gave up 6 TDs, and got 3 picks.
April 8th, 2010 at 7:56 pm
I actually think if you can’t get McClain. Don’t draft a Linebacker. I actually think Kirk Morrison is a top 10 MLB in this league. But our suck D-line needs to be upgraded and given some “Beef”
April 8th, 2010 at 8:00 pm
Guy
I agree with you. CJ is one of the weak links in this defense, I would start Routt right away I think he could play the man to man better then him.
April 8th, 2010 at 8:01 pm
top 10? Not sure about that, he barely makes any plays behind the line of scrimmage. He never really seems to make any big tackles, and is the center of a bad run D.
He can’t even cover marshall! (sarcasm)
April 8th, 2010 at 8:01 pm
You don’t draft a top tier MLB and put him behind DTs incapable of doing their job.
That’s how you create busts.
Draft McClain…you better have an answer for the NT position…and no, Dez Bryant 290lbs is not the answer…you need a big boy in there.
So if the Raiders are going to duct tape the NT and leave Kelly to his devices…then don’t even waste time bringing in McClain…we will just be frustrated
April 8th, 2010 at 8:07 pm
I seriously think there are many OL available in the 3rd round and lower. Take McClain, Cody or Dan Williams and Spike and we good to go for this defense. Round 3 and 4 take OL and RG. Pietrus will be there Ciron Black will be there and we got some depth in our OL if we sign a center like Mawae. Problem solved.
April 8th, 2010 at 8:08 pm
Aren’t Troup and Thomas good NT’s? I thought their knocks were pass rush, Thomas is a 2nd-3rd and Troup is a 3rd-4th round prospect. Or can Seymour handle the NT position? If he can, we should get Brandon Graham or Derrick Morgan.
April 8th, 2010 at 8:10 pm
Well name ten MLB better than Morrison. I’m just curious to your opinion that’s all.
I had the same discussion with a fellow Raider fan not too long ago.
April 8th, 2010 at 8:10 pm
At NT in our system currently or in most systems that utilize NTs we don’t need them to be pass rushers.
April 8th, 2010 at 8:11 pm
I don’t know the answer to the NT position…or at least I have ideas…but I don’t know what the RAiders are going to do.
All I know is that an MLB WILL NOT be successfull with pedestrian DTs.
And we’ve busted so many top picks because we don’t think about how that player is going to function with the players around him.
Just about every big time MLB has talent in front of them….not fringe players…or backups…but talent..that’s why all those teams franchised their big guys up front
April 8th, 2010 at 8:16 pm
I guess I’ll try, I just know everyone here blames him lol. I do notice that most of his tackles are down field and not behind the LOS though. Ray Lewis, Curtis Lofton, Patrick Willis, DJ Williams (?), Jon Beason, Barret Ruud, London Fletcher, Lawrence Timmons, Jerod Mayo, Bart Scott, EJ Henderson, and Demeco Ryans.
April 8th, 2010 at 8:16 pm
I’m kind of surprised Mawae hasn’t ben snapped up yet.
April 8th, 2010 at 8:22 pm
1. Rams: Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma (Vote total: 74 percent)
With the departure of Bulger, and no chance for McNabb, I don’t see how the Rams can logically pick anyone BUT Bradford first, regardless of the money question. Is there any other QB worth trading for out there? This doesn’t look like a difficult choice. — “Bob”
2. Lions: Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska (Vote total: 66 percent)
Yes, Okung is that good. I think the Lions need help protecting Stafford, so I’d go with Okung. Suh, however, could never be considered a bad pick. In any case, they need to go for a big body who can play in the trenches. The worst part of their game is the line of scrimmage (on both sides). — “rencej”
3. Buccaneers: Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma (Vote total: 63 percent)
I think that at number 3, Tampa Bay has a lot of choices. However, Gerald McCoy reminds many people of Warren Sapp, he is not as good as Sapp, but his deadly swim attack and his interior speed and strength make him something that cannot be passed on. — “abg2128″
4. Redskins: Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State (Vote total: 70 percent)
Shanahan churned out 1,000 yd. rushers annually in Denver, and there is no way he does that with this O-line. Okung provides an immediate starter at LT and has the added benefit of helping protect the newest Redskin, McNabb. While their best move might be to trade down and pick up a 2nd or 3rd rounder to help fill some more holes, Snyder has generally little regard for draft picks. I say he goes for the headline pick in Okung. — “thebigvinny”
5. Chiefs: Eric Berry, S, Tennessee (Vote total: 42 percent)
The Chiefs need a playmaker on defense and Berry is the man to fill that role. Williams might also get strong consideration, but defensive help is badly needed in KC. — “regorrelum1″
6. Seahawks: C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson (Vote total: 31 percent)
I think Seattle should take Spiller if he’s on the board because they’re in need for a running game and then take the next best OT with their second 1st round pick. However, since they now have basically no safeties, I wouldn’t be surprised if they took either Berry (if he’s on the board) or even Taylor Mays. Anyway, I believe that they just need to somehow get the first pick next year and draft Jake Locker for the QB of the Seahawks future. — “Drew Burghardt”
7. Browns: Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame (Vote total: 28 percent)
Let’s face it, the Browns need a QB and Clausen would be an excellent pick. What better way for Holmgren to start his tenure in Cleveland, than to pick a player he can train to lead his team for the next ten years. — “greg”
8. Raiders: Tim Tebow, QB, Florida (Vote total: 21.5 percent)
Why not Tebow? It’s the Raiders after all. We’ll see how happy and positive Timmy is when he’s stuck in Oakland. — “srichilin”
9. Bills: Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa (Vote total: 46 percent)
Buffalo needs to keep improving the o-line. Bulaga is the best option for this. Put together a great line and any quarterback can have success. — “jon”
10. Jaguars: Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech (Vote total: 25 percent)
Morgan doesn’t excite me very much but I suppose he’s a decent pick for Jacksonville. Earl Thomas would be a more immediate help. — “say wahhh”

———————-
Interesting. I think Charles Brown is really being underrated and is really as good an o-line prospect as anyone behind Okung in this draft.
I’m not high on Spikes (and definitely don’t want McClain for that matter) but in the 3rd or 4th he’d be worth a try. Just doesn’t look like a MLB to me though and I could see him winding up at DE at some point in his career.
I don’t know all that much about Gaither but I know his game is generally respected and we need all the o-line help we can get. But I did notice someone in here said the other day that Gaither would make JaMarcus look like a workaholic and that’s a glimpse into why the Ravens would like to trade him away. Not sure if it’s true or not but if he is that bad I wouldn’t deal a 2nd rounder for that.
April 8th, 2010 at 10:05 pm
Pouncey-C is the surest pick at #8. Campbell-OT should be there at #39. Take Butler-MLB in the 3rd round, Petrus-OG in the 4th, Jeff Owens-DT and John Conner-FB at 5A & 5B, A. Smith-RB & D. Karim-RB at 7A & 7B. These last 2 RB’s are initially for PR/KR. They have 4.38 & 4.40/40 speed. Who knows, they might even be able to run where DMac has failed.
April 8th, 2010 at 10:25 pm
Personally I’d fire a GM who would be stupid enough to draft a center as high as #8. It would have to be a terrible draft to do something like that. This draft is just the opppsite it is very deep and very solid. You can get a center in the 5th rnd capable of being very good in this years draft unlike most there might be as many as 4 OT’s go in the top 10 picks and someone wants to pick a center. Very ignorant!!
Centers are dime a dozen, we’ve had someof the best C to ever play in this league and NNE of the graced the 1st rnd. Barrett Robbins was a 2nd rnd pick in a bad draft. Pouncey is special but he wont go higher than the 20th pick. Your C is normally your worst athlete on the line however he might be the smartest. He has to call blocking schemes when he sees denfensive alignments other than that he just needs to be able to steer the NG or DT that’s just leverage.
A LT has to be the best athlete because he has to deal with the best athletes on defense. Your best C’s are tough hard nsed guy’s that are football smart and instinctive. That’s it!!
April 8th, 2010 at 10:31 pm
Gaither issues I think are work ethic, and they don’t wnat to pay a RT 1st round money (Oher)
April 8th, 2010 at 10:38 pm
Priest, if you wre the GM, who would you draft? Give us a mock draft, I’m curious. Too bad it will be rational and not for Al.
April 8th, 2010 at 10:44 pm
There is a guy in here who whines more than a 10 month old baby about our DT’s and you all know him (SnB). Sometimes I swear he is related to BJ Raji or is his lover. I’ll say this we are thin at DT as we speak but this BJ Raji romance is starting to turn my stomach.
If we can get Haynesworth I’m all for it he fits our system like a glove. It’s easy to see why he balks at playing NG, he’s not biult for it, Haynesworth is right at 6′5″ and is high cut. He’s much better suited for a 4/3 scheme and next to Seymour would give us the best T tandem we’ve had since Keating and Davidson.
If we can get a MLB who is aggressive and a thumper instead of a hunt and pecker. We would finally get something done on defense. I really think that’s where we’re headed because Cable’s approach to the Oline is very unorthodoxed and you can put a finger on what he really wants.
April 8th, 2010 at 10:49 pm
Guy,
I eliminate myself from that sort of thing because I just find myself getting frustrated not knowing who’s available after rnd 1 or 2. Not to mention what we draft in those rnds which leaves us with what we need to do next.
My wish list tho is T Williams or Bryan Bulaga afetr that I want an edge rusher (a real demon) next. If one of the HB’s are available that I like I’d go there and then to MLB. In that order which player I have no idea past the 1st rnd.
April 8th, 2010 at 10:50 pm
What if we got Brandon Graham in 1, Ducasse in the 2nd, and would you pick Spikes in the 3rd?
April 8th, 2010 at 10:50 pm
Good Night Nation!
April 8th, 2010 at 11:02 pm
Graham that high is a mistake, he is what I consider and edge rusher at this level. Think of Derrick Burgess, that is Graham.I know some want to compare him to Freeney. But Freeney plays a different scheme biult around quickness. Graham has great potential I love the kid but I’d rather go with someone wit better size at that spot.
April 8th, 2010 at 11:04 pm
I would take Griffin from USC over Graham because Graham will wear down late in games.

All Haynesworth would do here is collect his huge paychecks and steal money from the old man as others have done before.

April 8th, 2010 at 11:44 pm
Dunlap has a bad motor and attitude, Morgan is the real deal but he tends to get distracted. I just don’t like either at #8 and Spikes I like everything about him but his quicknes is a huge concern. You simply cannot play him in passing situations he’ll get abused. He is a 2 down player if that. The league is changing so fast towards a pass first league he would be standing watching most of the game. 15 years ago i wouldn’t care as much but now with these slot recievers and pass catching TE’s he just can’t play. Especially near the goal line, where quickness is a premium.
I’m going to float an idea that is ahead of the curve a bit. I might take Taylor Mays and play him inside LBer even MLB vs teams like the Saints and Vikes or Chargers get him up to 240-45 and play him becuase of his agility and qucikness. I know it’s a bit radical but I’m telling yu the leagu is headed to where it would work.

Would you want either DE if Al learned about trading down? Not too sure about using a 1st rounder on a project in Mays, he also doesn’t look impressive in his highlights, he gets big hits but gives up a lot of yards and doesn’t always knock the ball loose.

5. WR
7. DE
Or something like that… (is it just the rd6 we don’t have this year?)
April 9th, 2010 at 3:14 am
Here’s a good mock draft I found:
1st Round-7th Pick:Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska.
2nd Round-Tony Pike, QB, Cincinnati.
3rd Round-Patrick Robinson,CB, Florida St.
3rd Round-George Selvie,DE/OLB,USF.
4th Round-Zane Beadles,OG, Utah
5th Round-Kerry Meier, WR, Kansas
5th Round-A.J. Jefferson,CB, Fresno St.
7th Round-Jared Norton, ILB, Texas
I’d swap Tony Pike for Colt McCoy though (although I kinda like the Bearcats) and I don’t think Pike will be there at 8, so I think we go for the best tackle there – Okung/Williams/Davis – but only if we get the QB in the 2nd…
If we don’t draft a QB in the first 4 rounds this year, we HAVE to in about the 2nd round next year I think…
April 9th, 2010 at 3:14 am

METAIRIE, La. (AP) The New Orleans Saints have held workouts for veteran quarterbacks Josh McCown and Patrick Ramsey.
Team spokesman Greg Bensel says the pair visited Saints headquarters Thursday.
The Saints are looking for potential backups to Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees. Mark Brunell, who’ll turn 40 in September, backed up Brees the past two seasons, but is a free agent.
Ramsey and McCown both began their NFL careers in 2002.
Ramsey is a Ruston, La., native who played for Tulane. He started 11 games for the Redskins in 2003, but has played in only four games since 2006 in stints with Denver, Tennessee and Detroit.
McCown started 13 games for Arizona in 2004. He spent the past two seasons as a backup in Carolina.

Good timing on the “getting younger”.
San Diego’s window is closing fast (if it’s not already closed; they have to be convinced at this point that they can’t win the big one, and are getting old and expensive in some key areas).
Kansas City is farther away than we are. Not buying this “New England of the Midwest” thing. Nobody has left New England and had success. Come to think of it, since they can’t cheat anymore, neither have the Patriots. But I digress.
Still not convinced that McDiapers has a clue. A little too much Mangini in that boy, methinks (as in “I’m a genius because I was a coach in New England, so everything I do is right and I’m in charge here now”).
Hopefully some of our young guys will step up more and more as they get a feel for the league and its demands. I like the plan. Still have to execute it, but the timing is good.

“I’m a Christian. I love God, Jesus, the Bible, prayer, worship, serving others — the whole package. But when my conscience tells me that I’m hurting people by complying with religious conventions, I don’t keep pressing the button. I start asking questions.”
many people leave churches because of the politics involved there. the hypocrits, liars, cheaters etc etc. nobody is perfect and the main goal is to try and be Christ-like. of course nobody is actually capable of that because he was perfect and sinless, but thats what you strive for. I go to church to worship the Lord and have fellowship with other believers. It’s great, but when somebody does you an injustice you have to realize that is the person’s fault – not God’s fault. Everybody has free will. we’re not robots

Russell takes another hit
People love to take shots at JaMarcus Russell and why not, he’s a big target.
Former Redskins QB Joe Theismann, on Sirius NFL Radio, said that the Raiders should make a deal for Jason Campbell. And the main reason is that Russell is terrible.
“If I was the Oakland Raiders, I would be on the phone with (Redskins GM) Bruce Allen and see what kind of deal we could make for Jason Campbell,” Theismann said. “Because I can tell you conclusively that JaMarcus Russell will never be able to play quarterback in the National Football League.
“He’s 290 pounds. At 265 he’s too big. He’s inaccurate and he’s too big. And he doesn’t thrown the ball well.
“JaMarcus just doesn’t get it. And to think that you take a strong-armed guy and you put him in Oakland and say that it’s the old Oakland Raiders. Jason Campbell can do everything for you.”
I, myself, don’t see it with Campbell. Though I am sure the Raiders will be mentioned in rumors — because they don’t comment on rumors.
THE OTHER CAMPBELL: NFL.com analyst Gil Brandt weighs in on Maryland offensive tackle Bruce Campbell, who shined at the combine.
“Bruce Campbell is a big risk and a great reward,” he said. “If you see him in person, it makes you drool. One thing I look at is what your conference thinks of you. Campbell did not get one vote for the All-ACC team.”

maybe with some blocking. he was sacked 43 times last year and the Skins went through like 5 or 6 different RB’s due to injuries and ineffectiveness. Lame duck HC at the helm

yeah, when I was in high school I was church hopping a bit and I tried out this new place that I heard good things about. two fellow high school boys were actually teaching the youth class and they were twins. I already knew these dudes because they were on the football team and nailed just about every hot underclassmen chick who attended the games.
they were church leaders, because thier parents were big shots (deacons & big-time tithes payors) in the church. needless to say that 1 visit was enough for me

Jhill,
Did you know that Charlie Weiss is not the GM of the KC Chiefs and that they traded for, and signed a QB just last year? And they are a team with many holes to fill. Maybe those things would have more to do with not picking Clausen for KC than anything Weiss thinks?
April 9th, 2010 at 9:05 am
JLH had 2 catches for 8 yards at the bye week (Week 9) with Russell at QB
April 9th, 2010 at 9:06 am
This is what I would do with the first 3 picks
1.Brian Bulaga- OT
Strengths:
Solid size and playing strength
Very physical demeanor; killer instinct
Outstanding technician
Natural knee bender; generates great leverage
Locks on – battle over
Quick, smooth feet
Great run blocker
Good hand use
Plays with terrific balance – never on ground
Shows ability to slide and mirror vs. speed
Very good work ethic
Good (not great) athleticism
Well coached
Smart
Adequate range to play left tackle
Very polished and Week 1 Starter
Summary: Bulaga has very good intangibles and I don’t see much bust in him though the Robert Gallery comparisons are inevitable. There is a lot to like about Bulaga, but he doesn’t have the amazing size of a Jake Long or elite athletic ability of a D’Brickashaw Ferugson to go in the top four picks. Bulaga will play very early on in his career and I expect him to come off the board between Picks 5 and 14. If Bulaga doesn’t pan out at left tackle, he will be an All-Pro right tackle.
2. Navarro Bowman- OLB
Strengths
Quickly diagnoses plays
Tremendous coverage skills, especially in zone coverage
Excellent tackler
Explodes through gaps as a blitzer. 17 TFL in 2009
I know some may say this is a reach. I think this kid has heart and will bring an intensity to whomever he plays for.
3.Ben Tate- HB
Auburn’s Ben Tate is a big back- 5-11, 220 lbs big. He is a monster hitter who can get the short yardage. While he has some trouble holding the ball in short yardage, he can get in the end zone. A downhill runner, Tate has the speed (4.4 40 time) and strength (2nd highest reps out of RBs) to punish potential tacklers. He doesn’t dance in the backfield, but instead hits the hole hard to get fast yardage. He has great down field vision and can also help with blocking in the backfield. He has the overall game to dominate in the NFL and could very well play with a chip on his shoulder his entire career due to the lack of attention in his direction.

Yesterday Jason Slapmywhore from the NFL network said a 2nd and 3rd might get Haynesworth. Too bad we traded our extra 3rd for Wimbley.

Dakota,
If Matt Cassell stops Charlie Weiss from drafting Jimmy Clausen, then that tells you all you need to know about Clausen.
Cassell was paid most of his guaranteed money last year. KC made up for the 14 million he would have gotten because of NEs franchise tag. Haley is CLEARLY not sold on Cassell despite Pioli.
I would tend to think if Clausen is anything, i mean ANYTHING, Weiss and Haley will get in Pioli’s ear and make it happen.

Copenhagen, all I can say is what I’m hearing is nothing concrete. I don’t want to put my signature on anything that’s not factual that I know for sure. I think Big Al really likes Kiffin but he wants Kiffin to LOVE the Raiders. It’s just the way he is and I can’t explain it any other way. If Kiffin would make his intentions clear then Mr. Davis would relax. That’s how I know him to be he wants his coaches to be like Rob Ryan in love with that team. Then he knows he’ll get their best work.
You can’t describe the passion he has for the Raiders and if someone that he relies on doesn’t give him that it just doesn’t compute with him. That’s why it’s so tenuous. But my gut feelings are that Kiffin is here, Lofton is his insurance that if Kiffin is somehow gone that he has a capable replacement.
I just spoke with John Herrera and for a fact Kiffin is conducting the interview with Lofton. But things still need to be worked out with respect to what his responsibilities are. Now this was while I was writing this post so take it for what it’s worth.
And I never give info like this but something needed to be done. Hopefully it doesn’t bite me in the rear.

RRS,
The point was Clausen for us at 8.
IMO, if the Chiefs, who also need a “franchise” QB, pass on Clausen then I wouldn’t touch him.
I don’t think Cassell is Haley’s guy, and I do believe Pioli would listen to Weiss.
Has NOTHING to do with Russell. If Clausen is better than Russell, bring him on. But if his former coach doesn’t want him, it would be a red flag for me.
Rather have Skelton later on in the draft.

Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen completed 57-of-59 passes at his personal Pro Day on Friday.
Clausen’s two incompletions came on apparent overthrows to speed-deficient Irish wide receiver Robby Parris, owner of a 10.7 career YPC average. Had Michael Floyd been out there instead, Clausen might have been a perfect 59-for-59. It remains to be seen what sort of “grades” Clausen gets from ESPN’s talking heads, but we’ll go ahead and predict that Mel Kiper will be very impressed, while Todd McShay will say he was only average at best.

KC got much better when Larry Johnson, Mark Bradley & Devard Darling sat on the bench and Jamaal Charles & Chris Chambers got thier old reps …
the Chiefs signed Cassel to a six-year, $63 million contract that includes $28 million in guaranteed money, and $40.5 million in total compensation in the first three seasons. they also gave up a 2nd rounder for him.
I can see giving up on Russell who has played 3 years for the team and had 3 TD’s and 17 turnovers, but Cassel had over 2900 yards & 16 TD’s with an awful team and is only 1 year into that monster contract

#367,
I agree 100% Rockstar.
April 9th, 2010 at 9:48 am
Dakota, #353. I like the Eagles approach much better. I mean, why not trade within the division? If you’re confident that you’re getting the better end of the deal, then you’re potentially creating a competitive advantage with that opponent by getting something better than what you’re offering in return. Of course, Al doesn’t see it this way, I know. But here you have the Eagles, trading an aging (and somewhat overrated) McNabb to the Eagles, taking their 2nd rounder, and maybe even preventing them from drafting Clausen.
On the other end of the coin, however, some players tend to get motivated just for their former team. So there is an argument for that. See Culpepper’s stint with the Raiders. Crap for the most part but he sure got himself up for playing the Fins.
April 9th, 2010 at 9:50 am
the Chiefs signed Ryan Lilja & Casey Wiegmann to help shore up that O-Line. re-signed Chris Chambers and picked up WR Jerheme Urban in free agency

April 9th, 2010 at 9:57 am
….not to mention how Al overvalues his own players….two first rounders for Porter? Get the fuk outta here Al! Are you nutz?
April 9th, 2010 at 10:01 am
Yeah. I wish he realized just how much of a buffoon he makes himself out to be when he brings up that trade. We all know Moss wouldn’t have accomplished half of what he’s done in NE in a Raider uniform. And it’s his own fault for not insisting on a conditional trade. “We couldn’t satisfy Randy Moss”. What a boob.
April 9th, 2010 at 10:02 am
the Chiefs signed Cassel to a six-year, $63 million contract that includes $28 million in guaranteed money, and $40.5 million in total compensation in the first three seasons.
——————————————————-
The signing bonus and last year’s salary ate up a lot of that 28 million guaranteed.
And they can always trade Cassell to Denver.
Don’t think Haley was happy with the 55% comp and 16 INTs. Don’t think that’s good value for what he’s making.
And Cassell didn’t finish strong at all like you imply. He threw for 187 yds in a loss to Cincy in wk 16, and 207 in Denver the final week of the season. All with 1 TD, 3 picks, and a lost fumble.

there may be a few teams willing to trade up for Clausen (like Sanchez last year). especially if he’s the most pro ready QB in the draft and put on a show at his Pro Day today
April 9th, 2010 at 10:04 am
Yeah, like it would be such a risk to have just put a first round tender on him lol.

Al’s paranoia is contributing greatly to his loss of fan base. I “mystique” was interesting an fun for a few when the team was “great”. Now it is just tiresome and, frankly, silly. Imagine how much more loyal more fans would be if they actually had information and accessibilty to the team, its players, and its coaches…..if they would just be more available to the media, perhaps the media wouldn’t clown them so much.

Very true. I especially love it when old Al brings in coaching candidates who turn him down and then suddenly the Raiders feel the need to go to the media to claim they never offered the guy the job in the first place. How obtuse.

Dakota,
the past was on fine display last evening as in Oaktown there was a get together honoring the Greatest Football Player of all time Jim Brown (the event was to raise money for Brown’s community work).
Greg Papa had an extensive interview with the man himself. It was on Chronicle Live – don’t know if there is a video of the program.
Bill Russell, Rick Barry, Al Attles, Jim Otto, Willie Brown – lots of greatness interviewed all with story after story to tell.
April 9th, 2010 at 10:19 am
M,
That sounds like a great time. Always great to remember the past.
I recall rumors of Al trying to get Jim Brown to play for the Raiders YEARS after he had retired. I even think there was an SI cover with Brown in a Raiders uniform…I’ll see if I can dig it up:

Nah, it doesn’t mean a thing that Shannyrat, who was clearly in the market for a QB, decided to trade for an old guy instead of draftng the young golden boy.
And wouldn’t Claussen sitting behind McNabb for 3 years be ideal?
Guess not.

April 9th, 2010 at 10:25 am

I don’t think many teams would draft a QB @4 and pay him $45-60 million to sit the first three years of his huge contract.
Hopefully with a new CBO and true limits on rookie salaries something like that wouldn’t be a bad idea.

ya know, when you think about it, the Raiders would’ve probably had the same record last year with Maurice Clarrett at RB (prison), Charles Rogers at WR (prison) and Gino Torretta at QB as with McF, DHB and JaM.

And with Cole Ford kicking…

jhill,
What the hell happened to Sasha since the 2008 finals? That dude was playing major minutes and hitting killer shots that year then suddenly…gone.
Is it that Russian tennis player he is banging?

Sasha clearly needs to bust out the shoelace headband again. If you ARE a greasy euroboy, do it with gusto.

could you please change my pick to Dez Bryant!?!?!

Jhill: you got it man

Sasha is buried behind Kobe since we have SFs all of a sudden. Ariza’s emergence and signing Artest meant less minutes for Kobe at SF. Sasha got all his minutes playing with Kobe when Kobe slid to the front court.
When Sasha gets on the court now, it’s the classic case of pressing trying to impress the coaches and get more minutes.
Farmar and Shannon Brown at PG isn’t helping either.
Just a logjam with Sasha getting the short end of the stick. I think he’s “fiesty” defense, length, and shot should have him starting in the backcourt with Kobe.
Fisher is done.

Lakers are the best team in the NBA and the best team doesn’t need homecourt only thing standing in their way is the injury situation. Bynum puts Odom on the bench making the bench much stronger, Shannon, Farmar, and Kobe’s shots need to fall which they haven’t been consistently due to finger issues

Dakota,
I’ll bet you that we will see a lot more of Walton and Sasha in the playoffs.

The Lakers are faggs.

NEW POST!

As expected Jimmy Clausen looked solid today at his workout.
What I found most interesting is guess who has been working with Clausen in preparation for his workout and who set up and scripted the workout today?
Former Raiders QB coach/Offensive Coordinator and often rumoured head coaching candidate for the Raiders and current CFL Montreal head coach MARC TRESTMAN!
Veeeeery interesting indeed!

Tebow also worked out with Trestman.
Doesnt mean anything except that Trestman is a much sought-after QB coach for hopefuls.
