NFP: Raiders worked out QB Kafka

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, April 9th, 2010 at 11:44 am in Oakland Raiders.

The National Football Post is reporting the Raiders worked out Northwestern quarterback Mike Kafka.

Speculation about the quarterback position has been heavy with the Raiders given the struggles last season of JaMarcus Russell, whom the owe $3 million in guaranteed money and $9.45 million should he play this season.

Oakland has been linked with Donovan McNabb (since traded to Washington from Philadelphia), Jimmy Clausen (Mel Kiper Jr. has the Raiders taking Clausen at No. 8) and Tim Tebow (NFL.com draft analyst Gil Brandt talked of an Oakland-Tebow visit).

Kafka is considered a mid- to late-round prospect.

Build the surrounding cast from the draft. AD just doesn’t develop rookie QB’s. He’s better off picking up FA’s and letting them shine when surrounded by high quality teammates. Worst case he can trade for Jason Campbell. The liklihod is that there will be many gems in the rough QB’s that won’t get drafted. He can bring some of those in for free to compete at camp.

  31. RaiderDebo Says:

Jimmy Clausen’s Friday workout for half the league’s franchises was solid but it’s unlikely scouts came away from Notre Dame thinking he had stamped himself as a Top 10 pick.

The scripted workout was run by former NFL offensive coordinator Marc Tresman, now head coach of the Montreal Alouettes, and included more than 50 throws from Clausen. By our count, all but two passes were completed.

Clausen displayed solid velocity and speed on his short and intermediate throws. The ball quickly arrived to receivers and his passes displayed a lot of pop. For the most part he was accurate. Late in the workout he delivered some nice strikes down the field.

Yet while most of Clausen’s passes were on the mark, the timing of his throws seemed off at times. His pass placement also was nothing out of the ordinary.

Pass catchers were intermittently extending vertically or reaching backwards to make the grab. On a number of occasions Clausen overshot his downfield targets. This is in stark contrast to the workout turned in by Sam Bradford, when receivers rarely broke stride to make the reception.

Clausen, coming off a toe injury, displayed only average footwork and quickness rolling outside the pocket then throwing on the move. The overall tempo and pace of the workout seemed to be lacking compared to the display scouts saw in Norman, Okla., on March 29.

Clausen will now visit a number of franchises around the league as teams prepare for draft day. As the workout ended one could not help but think the Washington Redskins made the proper choice by trading for Donovan McNabb rather than potentially using the fourth pick of the draft to acquire Clausen.

Adam Schefter: Raiders still front-runner for someone, dammit

    By Zaki, PhillyGameday.com

After losing out to the Redskins for Donovan McNabb, the Oakland Raiders still remain the front-runner to land someone, say, Adrian Peterson, league sources tell ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The sources say the ingredients for a trade are still in place. Schefter is pretty sure the Raiders are still willing to meet a team’s asking price for some player, like Tom Brady, maybe.

Also, sources say this player’s contract, which could be anywhere from $500,000 to about $20 million or so, has scared off other teams. But, sources say, Oakland is willing to pay anything to get someone over here, like an Ed Reed-type guy.

There are also connections between the Raiders and this player, that could very well be Brandon Marshall for all we know. Raiders owner Al Davis and this guy probably both like things, and Oakland’s new offensive coordinator, Hue Jackson, speaks English just like he kind of does.

One source familiar with trade discussions said no deal was done with Oakland. But other league sources predicted it soon would be done just to generate buzz even though they knew good and well that nothing was close to happening.

Another source far-removed from the situation is still trying to figure out why these guys have jobs.

The Top 10 Athletes With the Most Illegitimate Children
Posted March 03, 2010 by davidbreitman

Growing up, it seemed like the popular jocks and slutty tuba player with low self-esteem and a steady supply of butterscotch-flavored contraceptives always ditched health class during “Sexual Awareness Week.” Sure, the band geek didn’t miss anything that could help her stave off the last call vultures at her Tuesday night Burbank Community Center speed dating session, but some of the athletes could have used the life lessons. Here are the 10 biggest birth bandits who made it to the pros without passing go, collecting $200, or ever purchasing a condom.

    10. Charles Rogers, Unemployed (Former Number Two Overall NFL Draft Pick) – Five children with four different women

After knocking up two separate women before leaving high school, it’s hard to imagine that five-star recruit Charles Rogers would end up spending the majority of his adult life on police reports and NFL “Where are they now?” specials. As one of the single most talented receivers in college football history, the 6-foot-3 wide receiver entered the NFL as a can’t-miss prospect that Matt Millen claimed would become the face of the Detroit Lions franchise (which, oddly turned out to be sort of true).

Much like Matt Millen (whose ironic new role analyzing college football players for ESPN is sort of like hiring the captain of the Hindenburg to be a safety consultant for U.S. Airways), Rogers was a complete and utter failure. He logged just 14 NFL games before leaving the league in 2005, just in time to collect his fifth mouth to feed and an arrest for passing out drunk at a Mexican restaurant in Michigan at three in the afternoon.

    9. Larry Johnson, Charlotte Hornets (NBA/Family Matters) – Five children with four different women

It’s remarkable that a man who was forced to dress up like an elderly woman in order to teach Eddie Winslow an important lesson about morality and nerd acceptance has such little respect for the whole “sex before marriage concept” that 22 percent of Missouri high school students called “the excuse I tell people when they ask why I’m still a virgin.”

Johnson is currently retired from basketball, but did express interest in returning to the New York Knicks in a “leadership role.” Seems like a great idea, because what a franchise that specializes in luxury tax payments and sexually harassing employees needs right now is an aging lothario who looked at the script to Space Jam and thought, “I’m totally cool having fewer lines than Shawn Bradley and Elmer Fudd.” (Nothing but smart decisions from a man who lists “not getting that fat” on his list of post-career achievements.)

    8. Marshall Faulk, St. Louis Rams (NFL) – Six children with at least four women

Marshall Faulk must not have been paying attention during Kurt Warner’s annual “Just because Jesus loves you, doesn’t mean he approves of nailing every Cheesecake Factory waitress with a botched boob job and paternity lawyer on speed dial,” speech. Faulk, whose child support payments rival his career yardage, joined the NFL’s “frequent impregnator program” in the late 1990s and has been one of its most valuable members ever since. His commitment to casual sex and inability to decipher the complexities of condom use make him a first ballot shoe-in for the “Is That Kid Mine?” Hall of Fame (which for some inexplicable reason is directly next to the NBA head offices in New York).

    7. Ray Lewis, Baltimore Ravens (NFL) – Six children with multiple women

As the only Super Bowl MVP to have both family court and federal prison listed under the “favorites” tab of his GPS system, Ray Lewis has become the single most litigious athlete to ever be refused entrance into Disneyland after winning a Super Bowl. (Mickey Mouse wanted to get drunk and use Trent Dilfer as a wingman to score with the slutty Norwegian midget on the “It’s a Small World” ride, instead.)

After using the popular “you can’t technically prove it was me, and not my friend, who repeatedly stabbed that guy” defense to avoid a murder conviction in 2000, Lewis decided to devote his life to family and complaining about his quarterback, telling ESPN that he even sets aside an entire night every week to spend with two of the children whose names he can still remember. (Mostly because one of them is called Ray Lewis.)

    6. Antonio Cromartie, San Diego Chargers (NFL) – Seven children with multiple women in five different states

Call him what you will. “The Phallic Phenom,” “The Prophylactic Prodigy,” “The Knock Up Knock Out,” or simply “The Stork.” The only thing Antonio Cromartie (or as he’s known in paternity court – defendant AH12-1987) has more of than nicknames is illegitimate children. At just 25-years-old, the San Diego Chargers’ standout cornerback continues to show his preference to pigskin over sheepskin every time he visits a different NFL city.

However, before you go blaming Cromartie for his inability to “stop having children,” there are a few important things to remember. For starters, Cromartie struggles with difficult coverage and is not so great in “preventative” defensive schemes both on and off the field. Secondly, allegations from a Florida State University tutor claimed that while playing for the Seminoles, Cromartie read at a second grade level, making it possible that he’s been confusing balloons and/or Kit Kat wrappers for condoms. Finally, there’s not a lot of people who like this guy (just ask the gentleman whose head he allegedly smashed a bottle over), so maybe he’s just increasing his fanbase one paternity suit at a time. Quite frankly, there are a lot of possible reasons as to why he’s on pace to father well over three dozen children.

    5. Shawn Kemp, Seattle Supersonics (NBA) – Seven children with six different women (though recent reports claim it may be as many as 11)

Even though he may not lead the NBA in paternity suits (or know how to spell the words “paternity” or “suit”), Shawn Kemp has established himself as the face of non-marital baby-making in professional basketball. The former all-star and current McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish-eating champion’s refusal to stop procreating has made him one of the most notable scumbags in the league and the subject of a heart-warming Sports Illustrated cover story titled “Where’s Daddy?” in the late 1990s.

His most talented son, Shawn Kemp Jr., is currently one of the top high school athletes in the country and has committed to play basketball for the University of Auburn next year. If he works hard, eats his vegetables, and refuses to wear a condom, the younger Kemp could grow up to father his own crop of illegitimate children before getting arrested on the side of a Washington highway with cocaine, 60 grams of marijuana, and a semi-automatic weapon – just like the guy who kind of raised him.

    4. Jason Caffey, Chicago Bulls (NBA) – 10 children with eight different women

In 2004, the Milwaukee Bucks decided that giving Jason Caffey $11 million to not play for them was the best decision for a franchise that relied on an aging Toni Kukoc. In all fairness, everybody knows that Croatians hit their prime right around 37, though. (It’s almost like the Bucks thought that the massive panic attack Caffey was hospitalized over made him “less than clutch.”)

The early career exit did give Caffey time to focus on his true passion – impregnating random women, as the round mound of bed-pound notched enough illegitimate children to earn him a “failure to pay child support” arrest and brief cameo on Nancy Grace’s nightly “here’s-why-I-hate-men-athon.”

    3. Evander Holyfield, Boxing – 11 children by an untold number of women

As the only active athlete to appear on both The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and America’s Funniest Foreclosure Videos, Evander Holyfield has become one of the most iconic figures in professional boxing thanks to his tremendous work ethic and willingness to fight anybody for $13 and bus fare home. He sacrificed his ear, dignity, and majority of functioning brain cells for the sport, yet all he has left to show for it is two curling teams worth of illegitimate children and a promising career welcoming tourists to a Las Vegas Blvd adjacent Hometown Buffet.

    2. Travis Henry, Denver Broncos (NFL/Colorado Penal System) – 11 kids with 10 different women

Not the sharpest taco in the shed, Travis Henry never seemed to quite grasp the concept of safe sex or sobriety – living his life with a dedication to recklessness that Lindsay Lohan might call “a massive turn-on” if she wasn’t too busy cleaning dried vomit from the dusty mirror she keeps in the car she purchased with her Herbie the Lovebug residual checks.

As a former NFL running back who led the league in marijuana-related suspensions, it’s fair to say that “decision-making” and “not being a complete a**hole” weren’t high on Henry’s list of strengths at the 2001 NFL Draft. He collected his first failed marriage at 18, started his out-of-wedlock pregnancy streak shortly after, and had enough illegitimate kids to form an entire NFL defense by the time he turned 30. If only he didn’t get sentenced to a few years in prison for his role in a massive cocaine distribution syndicate in 2009, he may have been the only active NFL player to average more children-per-year than yards-per-carry.

Oh, and don’t let the math fool you. Henry didn’t actually sleep with the same woman twice. One of his transgressions resulted in twins.

    1. Calvin Murphy, Houston Rockets (NBA) – 14 children with nine different women

Do you know any syphilitic, one-legged meth-addicted hookers who like lighting things on fire and talking about commitment? If so, the Houston Rockets alumni association may have someone willing to violate her behind a T.G.I. Fridays while Vernon Maxwell films it.

Not only does former NBA star Calvin Murphy seem to be allergic and/or have a religious aversion to prophylactics, but he also appears to be willing to nail anything with a third grade understanding of room service and reproductive organs. The reigning champion of the baby momma Olympics would actually need to disown two of his children to get under the NBA maximum number of active players if he used his discarded offspring to form an expansion franchise. (Maybe the “Baltimore Bastards” or “Michigan Marital Mistakes?”)

The “and one” on Murphy’s slam dunk of impregnation may be the five different molestation cases launched by his daughters. Don’t worry, though, sports/paternal rape fans – he got off…

The NBA… Where Dreams Come True (provided of course your dreams involve divorce and public shame).
Honorable Mention: Karl Malone, who had his first illegitimate kid in college when knocked up a 13-year-old junior high school girl. He’s sort of like the Kerry Wood of bastard creation. Blazing start to his career, but just didn’t end on a strong note after getting stalled at three kids.

Nope, the max contract Cleveland could sign him to in 2010 is a six year $133 million dollar deal…or a little over $22 million a season. In a sign and trade you only have to send back salaries that reach 80% of what the salary is for the player you are trading for…..so around $17 million.

    Interesting.

Why would you say that? At some point, you’ve got to ask yourself why every scout sees Bradford as the better prospect. Why the mixed reviews of Clausen’s proday vs. the raves about Bradford’s? Why did the Redskins opt for McNabb vs. drafting Clausen? I’ve always thought he was pretty good, but there’s something wrong with this guy. I agree with Jhill. If KC passes him up, I wouldn’t touch him with a 10-foot pole.

I would prefer Campbell for a 3rd. Al’s track record isn’t good when developing a QB, but Hue Jackson could change all that.

KC has big money tied to Cassel, Seattle may still take him even though they gave up to much for Whitehurst and Cleveland would actually be a good spot for Clausen, since Delihomme and Wallace are not the long term answers there.

If Jimmy was 6′5 and if he weighed in at 236 pounds like what Bradford is and if Clausen was a senior then he would be the #1 QB!

Clausen also has the moxy of a REAL franchise QB.

Bradford gonna hurt that shoulder again in the NFL….watch.

i read this article on schefters twitter today IT SOUNDS LIKE JAMARCUSS JOB TO LOSE AND HE KNOWS IT !!! WTF THAT’S JUST STUPID HE NEEDS TO BE CUT NOW !!!!!!!!

Those were among the reasons the Oakland Raiders were interested in McNabb.

Raiders sources say that the Eagles contacted the Raiders about a McNabb trade and that is how discussions were generated. The Raiders thought they had McNabb before he slipped through to Washington.

Now the Raiders appear settled on at least one more season of JaMarcus Russell at quarterback. One more year with more emphasis on a sink-or-swim, get-it-done-or-bite-the-bullet approach with Russell.

Russell is considered in Oakland the primary issue, a talented quarterback who for whatever reasons has not connected with his coaches and teammates and has shut it down when troubled.

That makes new Raiders offensive coordinator Hue Jackson the coach in the entire NFL this fall who has the greatest challenge.

Jackson arrived from the Baltimore Ravens staff and was told by people that know Russell well that he had to build trust with Russell, that he had to enlist the help of Russell’s closest family members in his hometown of Mobile, Ala., and that he had to be tough and challenging with Russell.

The Raiders say so far, so good. That the Jackson/Russell connection is building early momentum and results.

A Raiders executive, requesting anonymity, said: “There has been such a lack of confidence in this team as a whole. The intangibles need to be rebuilt. It’s awful. The great teams go out there and know they will win; the good teams think they can, the average teams hope they can and the bottom ones hope they don’t lose too badly. I don’t think it’s bottom now for us. But we have to develop an attitude, a belief as a team and organization of winning thinking and preparation. That has to come from JaMarcus and from his position. It’s his job to lose. He is aware of that.”

Look for the Raiders to give Russell help by drafting an offensive lineman with their first-round pick at No -8. The Raiders will also look for defensive linemen in the draft and, yes, wide receivers.

They are still looking for that big-play threat that makes defenses focus on that one player, opening things for others. Maybe running back Darren McFadden can do it. Maybe Darrius Heyward-Bey — the Raiders surprise draft pick at No.-7 last year — can still be that guy. The Raiders, certainly, will draft another candidate for the job.

And count on Russell growing up and helping lift up his team.

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Why would you say that? At some point, you’ve got to ask yourself why every scout sees Bradford as the better prospect. Why the mixed reviews of Clausen’s proday vs. the raves about Bradford’s? Why did the Redskins opt for McNabb vs. drafting Clausen? I’ve always thought he was pretty good, but there’s something wrong with this guy. I agree with Jhill. If KC passes him up, I wouldn’t touch him with a 10-foot pole.

    ^^^^^^^^^
Every scout rates Bradford higher because he is taller and weighs more.

    Thats about it…..
    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Oh yeah? Which NFL scout told you that?? Come on man, you’ve got to be joking. You really think it’s just about height and weight? LMFAO!

Gil Brandt, an analyst for NFL.com and a longtime personnel boss for Tom Landry’s Dallas Cowboys, isn’t ready to call Darrius Heyward-Bey a bust yet. The former Maryland wide receiver was selected by the Raiders with the seventh overall pick last April when virtually all other teams had him graded as a late first-rounder.

Heyward-Bey struggled through injury and lack of production in his rookie season, drawing fire as the latest in a long line of draft failures for the Raiders. Quarterback JaMarcus Russell leads that infamous delegation.

“The quarterback was a tough decision because they had to take a quarterback because of need,” Brandt said during a conference call. “He just hasn’t responded to working the way he should.

“I’m still not convinced that Heyward-Bey has failed. I think [wide receivers] come on and become good players,” Brandt said. “It takes them a while.”

Brandt also had a word on caution on another promising, but flawed, Maryland player.

“Bruce Campbell is a big risk and a great reward,” he said. “If you see him in person, it makes you drool. One thing I look at is what your conference thinks of you. Campbell did not get one vote for the All-ACC team.”

Quarterback Jimmy Clausen threw for 45 minutes Friday in a scripted workout in front of representatives from 16 NFL teams. While he did not run the 40-yard dash, observers said Clausen appeared able to push off of his surgically repaired toe and drive the ball well on his throws.

Clausen, who left Notre Dame after his junior season and was unable to work out until now due to his toe injury, went directly from his pro day workout into a three-hour private workout for the Seattle Seahawks, who were represented Friday by offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates and quarterback coach Jedd Fisch. Clausen was scheduled to fly to Buffalo for a visit with the Bills after Friday’s workout.

The St. Louis Rams, who hold the No. 1 overall pick in the April 22 draft, sent a contingent to South Bend, Ind., that included GM Billy Devaney, head coach Steve Spagnuolo and offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur. Also in attendance were the Seahawks, who hold the sixth pick, the Cleveland Browns, who pick at No. 7, and the Buffalo Bills, who pick ninth.

Clausen measured in at 6-foot-3, same as at the NFL Scouting Combine, and weighed 224 pounds, up two pounds from his combine weight.

Yeah, because we all know Clausen played defense too. ND’s offense was in the top 10 in the Nation.

He finished the season with 3,722 yards passing, a 68.8% completion rate, 161.42 passer rating, 28 touchdowns, and four interceptions.

Man, I’m 1st to agree with you that it’s never all about the quarterback. It annoys the hell out of me that JR is blamed for everything, including the earthquake in Haiti. The point I’m making is that based on his college career, you can’t assume he’s going to tear the league up. Or that he’d come in here and lead us to the playoffs. If he couldn’t lead take ND to a bowl game last year, why am I supposed to believe he’ll lead an NFL franchise to the playoffs this year?

Give Bush and DMAC the ball…get Campbell and let him complete 64% of his passes..even if most of them are short throws….and stop the run.

Seems to me, the Raiders are desperately trying to bring any other QB for the team, other than Russell.

They overpaid for both Frye and Bruce. Definately could have let them hit the street and not have to pay close to $4 for the both of them.

Linked to McNabb, Sage and Campbell. Bringing in multiple rookies to eye-ball for the draft.

If this is Jamarcus’ job to “lose”, Al sure seems to think he will lose it, and clearly wants other options.

BTW, in Jamarcus’ short 3 year NFL career, he is never won a job (it was given to him) and clearly lost the job last year. Does he even know how to win a NFL job?

  236. M Lonetree Says:

    SnB,

DMc has been incredibly lucky that the number one picks surrounding him have been disastrous thereby deflecting the boos from him.

in general QBs and WRs entering the pros from college do require some development before getting “it” but an RB should be able to simply walk in and do what he has always done in HS and College. Run the freakin’ ball without tackling oneself and without coughing it up at a prodigious rate.

But JaBarelyCares (remind you of anyone Warrior fans?) and DHBlank have shielded McF from undue scrutiny.

He played fairly well in Kiffin’s offense in 08′

  243. vegas raider Says:

    Kiffin’s offense?

He played the best football of his NFL life when Cable took over the play-calling from Knapp the last half of 2008.

  244. KoolKell Says:

But, it was still Kiffin’s offense, and they moved him and the pocket around.

In 09′ Davis put his stamp on it by lengthening the routes and the straight drop pocket, ala 06′.

  245. vegas raider Says:

    Worked pretty well for Bruce.

Is Jamarcus so incredibly one-dimensional that he can’t succeed in that type of offense? Stop throwing it at people’s feet!!!

  246. KoolKell Says:

  247. KoolKell Says:

Young QB’s taking a lot of hits is no way to develop a QB.

  248. vegas raider Says:

    3 and half, lol

Regardless, the point being is that Bruce proved it wasn’t the offense. It was the QB.

Last years we scored 20+ points only 4 times. The 27 in Pittsburgh, and exactly 20 three times. Opening night with Jamarcus, Cincy with Bruce and the Frye-Russell split in Denver (13 points in the first half with Frye, 7 in the second half with Russell).

The other QB’s on the roster put more points on the board than Jamarcus. And they didn’t get the benefit of all preseason and the first 9 games of the season to get a rhythm going with the offense.

  249. KoolKell Says:

Bruce played after the team got healthy and DHB was benched, and he only lasted 3.5 games before blowing both knees out.

DHB started and played 2 of the 3.5 games Bruce played in.

JR problems is not the OL or the overall talent around him, the real problem is his passion for the game, his lack of leadership, his horrible work ethic and his sense that he got what he wanted attitude. He has never stepped forward and taken the blame for any of his misreads, he has not shown any maturity as far as a player who is been in the league for the past 3 yrs, he still seems not to understand what it takes to become a qb in this league. You can fix all the things u want with this offense but until we change the QB situation we are doomed in my opinion. Bruce might be garbage, less talented, but his players believe in him. JR needs to show dedication beyond any to win over his team, fans and get respected by his opponent.
