Draft prospect: Dan Williams
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, April 10th, 2010 at 12:01 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Fourth in a series analyzing potential draft picks for the Raiders, scheduled to select at No. 8 in the first round on April 22:
College: Tennessee
Position: Defensive tackle
Height, weight: 6-2, 327 pounds
Why it’s Williams: The Raiders have found their share of what they believe to be penetrating three-technique tackles (Tommy Kelly, Warren Sapp) and played Gerard Warren, another three-technique, alongside Kelly. Warren was sent packing. What they don’t have is that big tree trunk in the middle tying up two blockers while the likes of Kelly, Richard Seymour and their linebackers come in to clean up at or behind the line of scrimmage, thus making the Raiders defense difficult to run on. Instead, the Raiders have been awful against the run for years. No team has given up as many rushing touchdowns over the last seven years and there has been a steady drumbeat of 100-yard runners. Williams would give the Raiders what they hoped to have in Terdell Sands _ a stout inside presence against the run and make everyone else on the line better. Williams blossomed under the tutelage of defensive line coach Ed Orgeron and defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin at Tennessee and would step in and start immediately. Considering the Raiders specific need vs. the run, he may be a better fit than even Nebraska’s Ndamukong Suh or Oklahoma’s Gerald McCoy, the two supposed can’t miss tackles who should be long gone by the time the Raiders pick at No. 8.
Why it’s not Williams: Williams would be rotated in Oakland, coming off the field on passing downs. He can push the pocket but is not a big pass rusher. In terms of economics, the Raiders don’t like to sink really big money into what they consider part-time players. It took a while for Williams to play well at Tennessee _ he had only 19 starts entering his senior year and was generally considered only a mid-round pick. The tricky part of projecting Williams is if he can continue to get better, for as good as he was for his last year in the SEC, the NFL is a different animal. With nose tackles, you often know right away, and if Williams isn’t an immediate force, he probably won’t be one at all. The Raiders have had five picks in the top seven or better in the first round and have zero Pro Bowl-caliber players to show for it. They can’t miss again.
Quotable: “I can’t really control who says who is better. All I can do is perform. If you want to say who is better, you can put Dan Williams’ film against anybody’s film. Look at Suh and McCoy and you tell me who is better. That is my resume and that is what I can go by.”

Jerry is right. Williams is not a fulltime player. Here in Tenn, the Vols would be ran all over when he comes off the field. Against UCLA last year, they would exploit the Vols the moment he comes off the field. Late int he game he was gassed and they capitalized on his absence.

Listened to Todd McShay yesterday on NFL Sirius. He was talking about Clausen’s proday with former Bears’ QB Jim Miller. He said Clausen told him that he was about 80% going into the workout and that’s exactly how he looked. He was impressed that Clausen handled himself professionally considering the things that McShay has had to say about him. He tried to talk about the off-field stuff with Clausen, but Clausen always talked around it. He said he’s obviously been very well coached in this area and that he followed the script to a tee. He said the perception of Clausen as arrogant and entitled is very real and that it might come from the fact that he grew up affluent and has been given a lot in his life. He said the story about getting punched in the eye because some guy was messing with his girlfriend is very different from what several sources told him really happened. He also said that several NFL teams have investigated Clausen and will take a pass on draft day. On the field, McShay’s film study says that Clausen is a 2nd-round prospect. His completion percentage goes down 20 points when he throws between the hashes. He said Clausen’s lack of height may make it hard for him to see that part of the field. Also, he has to “wind up” to throw deep outs and bombs. He said it takes too much time for him to gather himself to throw those passes. He also throws “moon balls” when throwing deep. He makes a lot of bad decisions, throwing a lot of balls into double coverage. With him not being a great prospect on the field and with all the questions off, he thinks he will go in the late teens and possibly late in the 1st round unless some team trades up to get him. He said this is due to the increased demand and the lack of supply at the QB position in the NFL. Jim Miller has studied him too and agrees.

Jamarcus makes more than anybody on the team, and hasn’t yet put in enought time to warratnt that paycheck.
Than after the Jets game, “it ain’t my fault” “Jamarcus only worries about Jamarcus”.
Same shyt different shovel.

I don’t think other athletes care how much you make, as long as you don’t give them a reason to question you on it.
When a rookie (Murphy) calls you out for not being “punctual” (on-time) than something is up.
April 10th, 2010 at 1:37 pm
Remember the shoulder check Murphy gave Russell when Gradkowski went down? Tells you everything you need to know about both Murphy & Russell.
Murphy might prove to be a great draft pick!
April 10th, 2010 at 1:39 pm
Was there a more productive player taken in the 4th round last year?
The gem of that round!!!
April 10th, 2010 at 1:43 pm
If DHB could get his game together we would have a decent young group of WR with Schilens & Murphy but DHB is nothing but dead weight at this point.
April 10th, 2010 at 1:47 pm
Johnny knox on the bears was productive in the 5th round.
April 10th, 2010 at 1:47 pm
I think MIA will be looking hard at Williams since Ferguson is out the 1st 8 weeks. Think BUF would also be in the market for his services since they’re switching to the 3-4. Think he would be more valuable to them b/c of their defenses. If we could trade back with MIA than we would be able to pick up an extra 3rd rounder.
Worth it?
April 10th, 2010 at 1:48 pm
J Mac saying were getting Cambpell huh? I wouldn’t be surprised but I’d be pissed. T Williams and Okung will be gone so if were going OL get Iupati Al, Gallery is 30 and with the injury’s we can’t rely on him and we sure as hell can’t rely on Carlisle or Langston for a whole season, Iuapati who first played football in High School is a massive pro bowler for years to come
April 10th, 2010 at 1:53 pm
Iupati gives our Oline nastiness, transforms our entire offense, he will punk every DT he faces
April 10th, 2010 at 2:04 pm
We all knew we would take Russell, had a real good idea that we would take Darren, and we were all pretty sure we would take a WR last year.
This year, no real read on things. Lots of OT’s floating around, and QB’s. Both could be way-off
April 10th, 2010 at 2:19 pm
One thing we all can agree on about this year’s draft…
No more reaching on skill players. Get some productive players in the trenches and stop trying to “hit the homerun”!
That’s probably why Al will pick QB Jimmy Clausen.
April 10th, 2010 at 2:26 pm
What needs to be upgraded/what Al’s looking to upgrade:
O: QB, OT, G, FB
D: NT, MLB, CB
What I think we MUST get-NT, G, FB
What I think Al REALLY wants to improve-QB, NT, MLB, FB
I think Al is gonna debate between: Clausen, D Williams, T Cody, and Mcclain

Vegas,
You want the 4th rd WRs that were more productive than Murphy? Or all positions??
April 10th, 2010 at 3:04 pm
Ron,
Austin Collie was the only 4th round pick at WR more productive. He only had 80 more yards than Murphy.
Thomas had a few more catches, 100+ less yards, and only 1 TD.
And they didn’t have Jamarcus Russell throwing them the ball.
And yes, I would like you to list “all other positions” that were more productive.

======================================================
So not stopping the run and letting the opponent hold the ball and score…and THEN give the ball to our anemic offense makes more sense?
Let’s face facts. The offense is going to be garbage until the Raiders get a real QB. Stop the run, run the ball and throw on playaction…that’s who we are
April 10th, 2010 at 4:15 pm
An extra first down or two a half by our offense, would do wonders for our Run D.
Certainly wouldn’t fix the issue, and put a band-aid of sorts on it, but when the offense played anything other than like crap, or defense always played better than normal.
April 10th, 2010 at 4:19 pm
Vegas Raider,
We need a QB that completes more than 60% of his passes in order to move those chains….right now:
JaDavis – 48% completion
Gradkowski – 54% completion
That’s not going to get it done
April 10th, 2010 at 4:24 pm
I think Al will get a QB in the draft, let the Russell-Bruce training camp competition play out, and see what he has.

Because Al Davis has never developed a QB since Stabler….
Because both Russell and Gradkowski are both career 53% completion passers and neither has never gone abover 54% in their careers

Vegas,
Why do you have to stomp all over a brothers dreams like that? That’s cold hearted, Bro.
That was my dream/best case scenario. I didn’t honestly expect everything to go down like that.
You said you heard Balt. wasn’t serious about trading Gaither anyway, only floated the rumor to motivate him. I started my post by saying I saw it on espn or NFLN that Wash. wasn’t interested in trading Haynesworth. However, who knows what to believe. This is the time of year for smoke and mirrors, duplicity and double talk. Teams may say something to the media with the intentions of doing the exact opposite. So, who knows?
April 10th, 2010 at 4:47 pm
Because the best Raider QBs have been free agent vets who were starters on other teams
**************************
That’s why I am hitching my boat in 2010 to Bruce. Same pedigree, something to prove chip on his shoulder. If he fails, Jason Campbell, Troy Smith and plenty others will be available, again, next year.
April 10th, 2010 at 4:49 pm
Buckeye,
Hey sorry man, lol!!! It was a little early in the morning, had to fire one off to get loose.
I liked everything you were saying, but ALL of those moves seemed a little steep.
I will take one or two of those scenarios and be happy.
April 10th, 2010 at 4:50 pm
I agree with you SnB
If we trade our 4th pick for Campbell, that would be a steal and it would give us the competition we need instead of having Grad and JR compete against each other. I think Campbell never had decent chance to lead the Redskins, Campbell is not above average QB right now, but he is better then the below average QBs we got, he could be a starter for at least 7 teams in the NFL. Can’t say that about any QB we got.
April 10th, 2010 at 4:51 pm
I’d still like to see the Raiders get Jason Campbell and Albert Haynesworth from the Redskins, and snag Jared Gaither from the Ravens. But assuming that those things don’t happen:
1st round – OT Trent Williams or DT Dan Williams
2nd round – DT Lamarr Houston or OT Rodger Saffold
3rd round – QB Dan LeFevour
3th round – MLB Jamar Chaney or MLB Pat Angerer
4th round – OG Zane Beadles
5th round – OT Ciron Black
7th round – FB Matt Clapp
7th round – MLB Travis Goethel
This is also assuming we manage to move Kirk Morrison for a third-round pick.
In this case I’d like to see the Raiders bring in a veteran CB like Lito Sheppard so we have some depth. But with the huge tender we gave Routt, who knows if Al thinks that’s necessary.
April 10th, 2010 at 5:00 pm
LoneTree,
As for you, this is the year Russell puts all the JaMarshmellow, JaMeatloaf, etc. cracks to bed. From now on the word immense will only be used to describe his talents and not his waistline. Hopefully.
April 10th, 2010 at 5:01 pm

——————————————————-
I don’t think Cable’s play calling really allowed for a plus 60% passer.
And I guess you could say the same about the Oline and WR situation.
April 10th, 2010 at 5:04 pm
This is why I want Lamarr Houston and Brian Price with our 1st 2 picks….they are not NT’s and we dont play a 3-4 base anyway.Houston and Price have ONLY played DT….never rotated, never substituted….It’s like hitting the tri-fecta with just the 2 of them, imo
April 10th, 2010 at 5:09 pm
Wassup 4eve …
Yeah, I think we can get a decent fat guy in rd 2, but I sure would like to see Dez Bryant at 8 and Toby Gerhardt in rd 2.
I think a fat guy 2 down DT will be available in rd 3 or 4.
April 10th, 2010 at 5:10 pm
2005 Redskins 10-6 (Campbell’s rookie year; didn’t play)
2006 Redskins 5-11 (Campbell played 7 games)
2007 Redskins 9-7 made playoffs (Campbell went 5-7 as starter, Todd fkn Collins went 4-0 to end the season to get in the playoffs)
2008 Skins 8-8 (Campbell played all 16)
2009 Skins 4-12 (Campbell played all 16)
April 10th, 2010 at 5:11 pm
Seriously though,
Upgrade the O-line through the draft/free agency and trade, and watch these first round “bust” skill players start to flourish. IMO.
April 10th, 2010 at 5:18 pm
In late March and early April 2009, Redskins officials attempted to include starting quarterback Jason Campbell in a trade to acquire Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler; they also attempted to trade Campbell to at least one other team for a second-round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft
**************************************
Safe to say, if we miss the boat on Campbell in 2010, he will be available again.

April 10th, 2010 at 5:18 pm
Soo then Jhill you are happy with the O-line and D-line going into camp as is?
April 10th, 2010 at 5:22 pm
Vegas,
I know it’s not been Big Al’s MO to trade down, however, this might be the year to do it. If there’s even somebody looking to trade up. It takes two to tango. But, there are some damn good football players carrying 2nd and 3rd rd grades. This draft seems unusually deep, especially in the Raiders areas of need. Oline, Dline and LB.
Unless there’s somebody sitting there at eight that blows him away, it might be well worth it to drop back into mid first and pick up an extra 2nd or 3rd. IMO.
April 10th, 2010 at 5:23 pm
I am satisfied with the Oline going into camp. Or should I say I am resolved to the fact that Al like Langston Walker and Cable like Khalif Barnes. I’m pretty sure those 2 will be starting along with Gallery and Satele. The only question is where Henderson stands. If we draft Williams, I think Henderson is done.
Dline? I think we need a DE and a DT.

I’m saying Campbell has had twice as many starts as Jamarucs and over 3 times more starts than Bruce. After 50 starts, Campbell’s team has been trying to move him for 2 years, and there hasn’t been any takers for the price.
Not convinced that either Bruce or Jamarcus won’t emerge as beter QB’s than Campbell once they get a few more years and have the 50 starts than Campbell has now.

Marshawn for Bush??
——————————————————————————–
I’m hearing rumors (that I just started) that the raiders are interested in trading for Marshawn Lynch. He’s the tough inside runner that they need (since Bush can’t stay out of Cable’s doghouse) Drafted same year as Bush, ONLY 3 CAREER FUMBLES (Bush and Cable’s problem) and is a local oakland product….I realize with the amount of Bush love on this forum posting something like this is simply suicide, however I got a mean man crush on BEAST MODE since his days at cal, as you can tell <—–. Lynch needs a new start, legs are still fresh, plus Al can add another ex 1st rounder to the roster like he likes to do….Just a dream, after all whats rumor mill for?

Lynch could be traded on or before the draft.” Reported by ESPN.com

One year apart SnB.
April 10th, 2010 at 5:33 pm
We certainly need another running back behind McFadden and Bush. If only because both of them have a history of injury, and neither of them on their own have proven they can consistently overwhelm a defense.
That’s not saying we need to bring in a star running back, but we could use a reliable utility back. Hate on Fargas all you want, but he definitely served a purpose for the Raiders.

Darrius Heyward-Bey was one of the most talked about picks in the 2009 draft. Draft “experts” were shocked when the Raiders picked Heyward-Bey with the number seven overall pick.
Why someone who calls themselves an expert would be shocked that Al Davis went with the fastest guy in the draft is almost shocking in itself.
Heyward-Bey’s first season was filled with drops and growing pains of being a rookie. He started most of the season, which will later prove to be valuable to his growth as a player.
Many fans are quick to dismiss Heyward-Bey after his first season, but they could be jumping the gun.
While many people think that speed is Heyward-Bey’s biggest asset, they may be excited to hear that his work ethic is also one of his biggest strengths.
We live in a society where the media is quick write about who is not at a workout or who may not be happy with the team. Very often a story about a young player who is trying to better himself after a season that fell below expectations is ignored.
Hewyard-Bey has been in California all offseason working with the coaches and the quarterbacks to improve his skills. Bruce Gradkowski has said in interviews that he has been throwing to Heyward-Bey in the offseason.
He is putting in the work to get better.
Heyward-Bey recently changed his number from 12 to 85. His second year should be a fresh start for him and Raider fans should see a major increase in his production.
Heyward-Bey joins JaMarcus Russell and Darren Mcfadden as the three guys on the team that come in facing the most pressure in 2010. They were drafted to make an impact, but that impact has yet to be seen.
The phrase “Gets it” has been thrown around lately by people and quarterbacks who didn’t understand how to adjust to the NFL when they were young. It’s safe to say that Heyward-Bey “gets” it and he has caught on fast on what it takes to be successful in the NFL.
Look for Heyward-Bey to enjoy a successful campaign in 2010. He and Louis Murphy should make a fun tandem to watch in the future. These two young, hard working guys are part of the reason the Raiders will soon turn things around in a flash.

I like Spikes, and I think he’ll be a very good player somewhere, but I don’t think he has the speed to play in our scheme. Kirk is faster than Spikes, and remember what happens when we leave him in man coverage on Darren Sproles?

And let’s not forget Chris Cooley. That Pro Bowl Tight End is the best TE they have had in Washington in 20 years.

how to Be a Raiders Fan – wikiHow 1 Buy a Raiders jersey, hat, key chain, earrings, necklaces, anything with the Raiders logo on it. The key is to visibly show support for your team.
2 watch their games, or even go to their games. If none of these are possible, at least know who they are going to play and if they won or lost a game. 3.Don’t turn your back on your team. A hardcore Raiders fan sticks with them through good times and bad times, win, lose or tie Raiders until we die! If you go for another team just because the Raiders lost to them, you aren’t a very good fan and we don’t want you pretending to be one of us. 4.Be willing to participate in the Black Hole, which is located in the Raider Nation end zone. Attire here is outrageous and spikes, skulls, face painting are all recommended necessities.

I am doing good bro. Let me holla at you for a second. Bro, you mistaken. The reasons not many teams are high on Campbell is not cause he is not a good QB, primarily its because of what they have in their team. Rams will draft Bradford certainly a better option for them. Bills have Edwards or might be waiting to draft Clausen, Bucs got franchise QB Josh Freeman, Seattle traded and gave their new kid 5mill a year to compete with Hasselback, finally Cleveland also got their man Seneca and Int freak Jake Delhomme. As you can see, most teams are done getting their QB, if Campbell was available in early March, most teams would have went after him.
The only team that still needs a QB is clearly our beloved Oakland Raiders. AL Davis seems to be leaning towards getting either a veteran QB or a new rookie in the draft, its been clear from all the rumors we heard, Mcnabb, Sage, Kafka, etc. I think this decision was reached when AL saw JR in Oakland weighting more then 290lbs. Gradkowitzki been rehabbing and working it in Oakland along with many other like DHB. JR was seen in parties in Vegas and Basketball in Phoenix. Its obvious to most reasonable minds that JR doesn’t have the work ethic needed to become the leader of this team. Campbell is been in the Redskins headquarters doing exactly what Grad has been doing here. Oakland and other teams know that its matter of time before Redskins either drop their asking price or cut Campbell before the training camp. That is why Campbell hasnt been traded right away.

Not even a #2 pick? The guy is not thought of too well by NFL GMs, so I’m surprised your advocating picking him up.

We BADLY need competition at the QB position going into 2010. BADLY NEED IT!
Right now you have two guys that are totally unproven except for a flash in a game or two (both Russell & Gradkowski)
The best competition available for a 4th round pick is Campbell…no rookie mid to late round pick is going to be game ready…Campbell will be.
Say what you want about him…but the kid completes the passes he throws,.
A short to medium dink and dunk conservative QB is exactly what a team that has had one of the worst offenses in 8 years needs right now.
Let Gradkowski or Russell beat this guy out…and at least we can be confident the winner put in some work.
Russell definitely needs to be pushed…
and I have never heard of a 53% passer, with Gradkowski’s pedigree ever be GIVEN a starting job based on 2 gms.
I am not seduced by a game here or there…we need some consistency and in camp competition.
Tell me who is available that will provide more competition…maybe Bulger…
April 10th, 2010 at 7:05 pm
I haven’t seen a Raider QB consistenly complete his passes since GAnnon
April 10th, 2010 at 7:10 pm
I would venture 2 say Javons “antics” had a devastating effect on the team….at the critical time in #2’s development there was no WR who knew how 2 play in the nfl.His very presence would’ve helped our ROOKIE WR’s….Too much depended on Javon that year….Big Al beleived in him, really believed in him,and man-o-man,1 careless selfless night, knowing the TEAM REALLY needed him,he goes out, instead of working as hard as someone could, earning multi-millions of $$$$$$$,the donkey fukks up

SnB,
A 4th rounder is not TOO much, but even still, if you make the move, you better be 100% sure that he will emerge as the best QB.
You can’t trade important and cheap mid-round picks for a QB making $4 million a year that isn’t even starting.
April 10th, 2010 at 7:33 pm
What’s wrong with competition.
YOu guys standing with Russell are basing it on hope that he changes 3 years of behavior
You guys standing with Gradkowski are basing it entirely on hope…..a plodding effort against the Bengals and a good game against a Palomalu less secondary that is in the middle of a massive overhaul
Come on guys…I understand risk/reward and every other reason for this pitiful 7 year stretch.
But we have to try. No GM worth his salt would be happy with just Russell and Gradkowski…you could poll 1 million people and 98% would come back no….the only ones saying yes…some Raider fans and family and friends of Russell and Gradkowski.
Come on folks
it seems that you guys are afraid of competition.

Vegas,
A 4th round pick is nothing. Last year we spent one on Slade Norris.
Anyway, a 4th round pick for a QB that has started and showed more production than anyone currently on the roster is a good insurance policy against a 1-15 season.
Which is what will happen if Russell / Gradkowski perform at historical levels!

Al loves to collect other people’s first rounder. Wasn’t Campbell a first round pick as well? 25th overrall I think. My hunch says Al makes a play for Jason Campbell. Dont be surprised if it is a sign and trade deal.
April 10th, 2010 at 7:44 pm
I’d still like to see the Raiders get Jason Campbell and Albert Haynesworth from the Redskins, and snag Jared Gaither from the Ravens. But assuming that those things don’t happen:
1st round – OT Trent Williams (Oklahoma) or DT Dan Williams (Tennessee) (Suh or Okung if they’re available for some reason)
2nd round – DT Lamarr Houston (Texas) or OT Rodger Saffold (Indiana)
3rd round – QB Dan LeFevour (Central Michigan)
3th round – MLB Jamar Chaney (Mississippi State) or MLB Pat Angerer (Iowa)
4th round – OT Kyle Calloway (Iowa) or OT Sam Young (Notre Dame)
5th round – OG Zane Beadles (Utah)
7th round – FB Matt Clapp (Oklahoma)
7th round – MLB Travis Goethel (Arizona State)
This is also assuming we manage to move Kirk Morrison for a third-round pick.
In this case I’d like to see the Raiders bring in a veteran CB like Lito Sheppard so we have some depth. But with the huge tender we gave Routt, who knows if Al thinks that’s necessary.

Three years of behavior?? You’re going a little to0 far man. Look, even Lane Kiffen, the guy who supposedly didn’t want to draft him and a guy who couldn’t wait to criticize players in public, praised the work that JR put in. As far as this year is concerned, he was in town for a voluntary QB school and all voluntary mini camps. Everyone’s basis for Russell not putting in the work seems to come from the fact that he was “overweight”. As far as I’m concerned, that’s even a matter of opinion. I’m glad he’s a big guy or he would have gotten killed last year. I’ll take the Russell that beat Denver any day of the week. Anyway, I’m not afraid of competition. I just have a hard time remembering when a “QB comepetion” in training camp resulted in anything good. The bottom line is that the day JR was drafted no. 1 overall and signed that contract, he “earned” the starting job. If not in 2007, for sure in 2008 and beyond. That makes him like every other QB drafted no. 1 overall. That’s just the way it is.

I forgot a 5th round pick. If RB LeGarrette Blount (Oregon) is there, it would definitely fill a need. Could be a pretty legit bargain, too.

How long before the Browns gave up on Tim Couch?
He was the #1 pick, and I don’t think he lasted much more than 4 years. And he was a heck of a lot more productive than Jamarcus was last year.
April 10th, 2010 at 7:59 pm
Brady Quinn, Tim Couch and Alex Smith didnt produce but at least they showed they cared and put in the time. Jawalrus didnt put in the time and didnt produce. That’s what ticks me off so much.

s close to russell and that he has been leading the workout sessions for their position group. Now i dont know if any of it is true because papa kinda insinuated that they were close and what could murphy say no, and he could have just been saying what he had to say to stay on the field but if its true i think jamarcus might come through for us this year especially if he has an oline and a running game. If not we’ll just have to accept he’s not the answer and move not that alot of you haven’t done that already but im willing to give him one more chance.

Couch started as a rookie, right? So JR should get another two years as the starter, not get cut tomorrow like a lot of dorks on this site are longing for. But let’s forget the 5th year for now. He deserves to go into this year as THE starter in my opinion based on handing him two rookie wrs to start the season. There’s no successful precedent for that as far as I know.

Again, that sounds great. Great pie in the sky statement. I believe that he’s better than Grads. But again, his draft status and contract make him the best QB team. It’s been that way for every QB picked no.1 before him and it’ll be that way for the ones picked in the future. Was Stafford really better than Culpper gointo the season? How about Sanchez vs Clemens? Doesn’t matter. No reason to single JR out.

April 10th, 2010 at 9:08 pm
Debo,
If draft status continues to determine value after the first season, then we should be able to trade for Tom Brady really cheap. (I hate him, but he’s a good example of my point.)
By your logic, we should pay Tim Couch 50mil to come out of retirement and lead us to the SB. (I am a die-hard UK fan, so saying that hurt me almost as much as the Brady comment.)
The fact that JR was drafted #1 overall means NOTHING and earns him NOTHING anymore. If he doesn’t play better than any other QBs that are in camp (whoever they may be), then he doesn’t start. The free ride is over as of the last half of last season.
April 10th, 2010 at 9:18 pm

Just curious, was Couch that good at KU? i remember watching the highlights from ESPN and didnt think it was anything special.
yeah, it bothers me that JR wouldnt even put in the efforts. I can see how a team is committed to a #1 pick overrall like Couch and Alex Smith but you never hear those guys are lazy and show up overweight. I dont get all these JR apologists.

Here is what I think we should do:
1- Trade for a 3rd, 4th or 5th for a Vet QB like Campbell.
2- Sign Seymour Long Term, and Cut TK f we have to save money.
3- Trade a 2nd for Big Albert.
4- Draft OT T Williams at 8, and Spikes or another MLB in the 3rd, a FB, CB, and the rest OL.

Trade a 3rd, 4th,…..*
April 10th, 2010 at 9:30 pm
I think the comment I just posted is awaiting moderation because I linked to YouTube… But head on over there and check out these videos of LB Jamar Chaney (Mississippi State). There’s one of him against the run, another in coverage, and another of him blitzing.
Apparently the Raiders have already interviewed this kid, and I can see why. He has the kind of speed necessary to be the Mike linebacker in the Raiders’ defensive scheme.
As nice as it would be to take Rolando McClain in the first round, it’s not Big Al’s M.O. to draft a linebacker that high. Chaney is projected to be a 2nd or 3rd round pick, and I’d say he’s definitely worth an extensive look. Especially if we can pick up a DT who is actually capable of occupying blockers.
April 10th, 2010 at 9:31 pm
Aig,
Couch looked very much ready for the next level immediately while at UK, despite a questionable offensive line. As a Raiders fan, I wanted desperately for us to draft him to replace Jeff George. We ended up with Gannon starting in the season following Couch’s draft and I really wish that we had gotten Couch and let him learn the NFL game from Gannon instead of being thrown into a horrible situation in Cleveland and being asked to start from day one and carry an entire team on his back and make it a winner… especially when that team was as horrible at nearly every position and had almost no chance of winning. I think Couch could have been an above-average NFL QB if he had been drafted into a different situation and brought along correctly.
As a side note, I’ve seen you say “KU” in reference to Kentucky several times before, usually when talking about Micah Johnson… or maybe John Connor… and have thought about correcting you in a friendly way, but never did. KU is Kansas… and UK fans and alumni really get annoyed by that misnomer, although it’s understandable. I’m not trying to be a dick, just letting you know that it’s UK for future reference.
Having said that, I want the Raiders to address Offensive Line and Defensive Tackle (not End… NO TO JPP!) for the first few rounds, taking best available players at those positions right up until the “take Johnson now or he’ll be gone by the next time we pick” and then taking Micah to be our MLB. I hope that Connor is still there in the later rounds for us, because I believe he will be everything that we need in a blocking fullback who can catch 10-25 passes per season, used out of the backfield a couple of times per game when we decide to let him release on a pattern. Connor can be the piece that has been missing since we stupidly let Ritchie go to the Eagles… I’m still mad about that.
April 10th, 2010 at 9:36 pm
Morris, Walker, and Barnes were part of the problem last year because they didn’t contribute much. Barnes couldn’t win a starting postion over Green & Mario, Satele can’t win the job from Morris, and Walker needs to prove himself.
We need OL, DT, FB and a MLB. We can also use another QB, CB, WR, and a RB.

I don’t put much stock in Youtube clips of players… you can make anyone who has played at least one season look like a god or a goat in a two-minute clip if you find the right plays and edit it correctly and put in some music that puts the watcher in the proper mood. My take on wanting Johnson and Connor comes almost purely from watching UK games from the past few years. The rest comes from being a Kentucky-born UK fan.
April 10th, 2010 at 9:50 pm
As far as fullbacks go, I like Oklahoma’s Matt Clapp. He made the All-Big 12 First Team thanks in large part to his blocking skills. He didn’t run the ball much, but he caught nine passes for 92 yards and three scores.

Raiderdebo, your post #31 is exactly what I’ve heard about Clausen and this full-on campaign for Clausen by Mayock and the NFL cronies is exactly what they did fo Brady Quinn. But no worries the GM’s in the league are not buying it. They know he’s been cached by Mayock and others as to what to say and how to act. But Leopards cannot change their spots. He is what is and arrogant eliteist and he will rear his ugly head as soon as he gets paid and gets some attention.
Whoever selects him earlier than the 2nd rnd will regret it. Because he will fight with the stars on his own team. As I said he thinks he’s already as decorated as Joe Montana and others just need to recognize.
This kid Dan Williams just might be a player sometimes it takes kids a few years to get it. Now if he has then it’s just about getting proper coaching to get better. he definitely has the skillset to play the 1tech. But so does big Cody however with big Cody I would proceed with caution.
April 10th, 2010 at 9:55 pm
Young,
As far as running the ball, I don’t care one bit about a FB’s ability there. The only time the FB should carry the ball is on a dive play when you’re inside the 1… and even in that situation, I would rather have the FB lead-blocking for the HB. The only reason for letting the FB take it in is to prevent damage to the HB from those pounding goalline runs up the gut and letting the bulkier tank take it in.
April 10th, 2010 at 10:01 pm
Priesttj,
I agree that Clausen has MAJOR personality/ego issues. However, I think he has a mid-to-late 1st round skill set. His pro-day performance was very impressive, even if he WASN’T still recovering from an injury.
I want to comment on something else you said in that post as well:
“he thinks he’s already as decorated as Joe Montana and others just need to recognize.”
That statement perfectly describes another QB that I know. The kid to which I refer thinks that he is god’s gift to us all. He wears a massive chain with his own name for all to see. He acts as if he is the best thing since sliced bread, no matter how he plays. He blames losses on his teammates and says that none of the fault is his, going so far as to say that he thinks he played great in games where he clearly made mistakes. I will let you figure out who the QB that I’m talking about is.

There are some systems where the FB can be used effectively in the running game. Philly had a lot of success using Leonard Weaver last season, and San Diego has worked Mike Tolbert into heir offensive gameplan to some effect. But the Raiders have no need for a FB like that.
They need a lead blocker first and foremost, and if whoever they bring in can also catch the ball on occasion, that’s more than enough. But Lawton has been completely ineffective, and while Marcel Reese shows some potential as a catch-and-run type fullback, he isn’t much of a blocker.
Funny how when a team has so many glaring needs, weaknesses at even the least critical of positions seem exaggerated.
April 10th, 2010 at 10:09 pm
Stevie you don’t know what the hell you’re talking about you’re just repeating what you heard from people that hate the kid. Russell has said on several occasions that he needs to improve on everything and he puts a 60% on where he thinks he is and where he wants to be. He knows he’s learning and knows he needs to get much better and has said so many times. But the haters never hear that part because they don’t want to. Just like you…..

Young,
I know that there are systems where the FB gets lots of carries, especially in certain varieties of the WCO; however, I was talking about FB in relation to our offensive philosophy. A FB who can open up some holes and catch 10-25 passes per season would be worth his weight in gold to the Raiders as far as I’m concerned. I think we can get Connor in the 7th… at least I HOPE that we can.
I advocate Johnson for several reasons, but mostly because we need a great DT who can occupy two blockers before we even think of addressing MLB. The best run-defender, thumper of a badass MLB would be USELESS to us until we get a major upgrade at DT. With a great-against-the-run DT, even Kirk would be more than adequate on rushing downs (but I would still want an upgrade). As long as we haven’t gotten early-round talent (or traded for good veteran skill) at DT, we can’t take MLB… it’s a wasted pick, meaning that McClain and Spikes are wasted picks unless we get a great DT FIRST.
McClain will be gone before our second pick, but Spikes’ bad pre-draft performance will hopefully drop him to a point where we can address DT before we get him, then pick him up to play MLB. If Spikes is gone before we can get him, I’m okay with that as long as we get Micah… but there are a LOT of people on this board who don’t know jack about football and think that getting McClain will instantly make our run-defense stout without getting a new DT. Those people are idiots. The run-stuffing MLB is only as good as the DT who takes up the blockers in front of him so that the MLB can make the play.
April 10th, 2010 at 10:16 pm
Priest,
I’m repeating WHAT I HEARD FROM JR HIMSELF IN A LOCKERROOM INTERVIEW. Goodness, you’re retarded. Want me to find a link to the video for you so you can see and hear him throw his teammates under the bus and praise his own play? Want me to find some pictures of him iced out with his huge chain that carries a monument to HIMSELF on it?
He loves himself and hasn’t developed a commitment to the game YET. I hope he does it soon (and while still a Raider), because he would be fantastic if he got an ounce of motivation and put his ungodly physical gifts to use. How do you call me a hater when I constantly talk about how I want him to become what I know he is capable of? Does it make me a hater to point out that he has a gut and doesn’t put in the work?
April 10th, 2010 at 10:16 pm
While all you haters are namecalling Russell and professing him to be lazy and dumb. He is tearing it up in camp and he has the coaches attention. He loks good and is taking this team back on a day by day basis.
So say whatever you wish and hate all you want Russell is putting his stamp on that position as we speak……….period
He just needs to stay the course and keep grinding and use everthing people say about him as fuel to get it done.
April 10th, 2010 at 10:21 pm
Yeah, I agree 100%. That’s why if Suh doesn’t fall to us in the 1st round, I’d want to see us pick up Lamarr Houston in the 2nd round (Brian Price and Cam Thomas are also possibilities), before we even think about taking an MLB. That way if we aren’t able to move Kirk Morrison, it’ll at least make his job against easier against the run (although he’s still a liability in coverage).
I also wouldn’t mind it if the Raiders made a play for Haynesworth. It would instantly make our run defense respectable (fewer blockers for Kirk and Thomas Howard to not be able to disengage from).
I do like Spikes, but I’m not sure he’s fast enough for the Raiders defense. Like I was saying earlier, imagine him in man coverage on Darren Sproles…
And yeah, that was the point I was making re: the FB situation. Connor seems like a good player too, I just know Matt Clapp is regarded as one of the best blocking fullbacks in college football, and can probably be gotten in the 7th round.
April 10th, 2010 at 10:23 pm
YA,
I would draft him!
April 10th, 2010 at 10:24 pm
Priesttj,
I sincerely hope that what you said in post 189 is accurate in terms of what he’s doing NOW. I hope that JR can do everything that needs to be done for him to be the QB that leads us back to greatness. However, he has done nothing up to this point to give me faith that he will do so, so I need to see him putting in the work and showing RESULTS before I will support him.
That doesn’t make me a hater, it makes me a realist. The facts are that he has carried a gut, looked lost, and can’t go through his progressions (watch the games, he stares down his intended receiver or only looks at two guys before throwing). These things can all be cured, but the fact that he still carried a gut in the most recent pics I saw have made me wary of hoping for improvement. The gut would go away on its own if he were getting in a lot of reps and working on technique, quickness, agility, and mobility. My greatest hope is that he still has the gut because he’s been in the classroom and filmroom. I highly doubt it, though. I’m cautiously optimistic and I’m a realist. It doesn’t make me a hater to say that he has been lazy.
April 10th, 2010 at 10:31 pm
May not make you a hater but it does make you stupid………….period
April 10th, 2010 at 10:31 pm
Priesttj,
To carry that point a step further: A hater is someone who criticizes when there is no justification for it. Every criticism that I have made of JR is totally and 100% justified… and I list out the rationale behind everything that I say to make sure that I back up my words with evidence. You say that he’s doing all these great things, but there is no evidence of it. When you consistently throw to the second option (out of five) and that option is double-covered (or has a safety who can break on the ball quickly within ten yards of the receiver) many of the times that you do so, you have proven that you can’t go through your progressions and don’t know how to read a defense.
I’m not a hater, you’re just a fanboy who ignores evidence and calls anyone who disagrees a hater. I hope that JR becomes an All-Pro QB while still wearing the Silver and Black, but it’s not looking very likely by all patterns that have been established. I hope that he can turn it around, but I will not have blind faith.
April 10th, 2010 at 10:32 pm
Priesttj,
If Russell is so capable of being a true NFL quarterback, he doesn’t need you to be his apologist.
I think I speak for almost everyone here when I say I’d love to see JaMarcus become the player his immense physical gifts would allow him to be. But even you can’t be satisfied with what you’ve seen thus far.
He was passed on the depth chart TWICE last season, and even that didn’t light enough of a fire under him. He needs more competition in camp, whether it be in the form of another former #1 pick (Jason Campbell) or a young mid-round pick (Kafka, LeFevour, Pike).
Are all the Raiders’ problems Russell’s fault? Of course not. But seeing how much better the offense performed when two marginally-talented 3rd-string caliber quarterbacks were running the offense, you have to think there’s something wrong there.
Whether Raiders fans like it or not, Russell is going to be on the roster for the foreseeable future. He’s going to be part of the equation at QB no matter what, because a lot has been invested in him. The best thing the Raiders can do is create an environment in which he has the tools to succeed. But the team needs to have a solid backup plan in the event that improving the receiving corps and offensive line isn’t enough to put JaMarcus back on track.
April 10th, 2010 at 10:33 pm
LMFAO @ it makes me stupid!!!
How does it make me stupid to call someone who has a gut lazy? If you haven’t learned how to go through progressions and read a defense on the most basic level after three seasons in the NFL, then you are lazy… either that or you’re stupid… but stupid wouldn’t account for the gut. I don’t think that JR is stupid; he’s just lazy.
So, how does it make me stupid to call someone with a gut lazy?

O Mock Draft:
1- Trade Up For Suh, or draft OT T Williams
2- Dunlap, J Best, B Campbell, or Lamarr Houston
3- ILB Chaney or Spikes
4- DE Austen Lane, OG Newhouse or M Johnson
5- OT Sam Young or Ciron Black
5- CB Walter Thurmond or Stoudamire
7- FB
7- HB
April 10th, 2010 at 10:36 pm
Young,
Priest IS satisfied with what he’s seen so far. According to him, JR is a god and has only been bad because of playcalling and the players surrounding him. Priest believes that JR is already a Pro-Bowler in his own right, but all the other factors have made him look bad.
April 10th, 2010 at 10:38 pm
Stupid and ignorant, he’s far from the only QB who’s had a gut. Big Ben has a gut is HE LAZY? Huh?
April 10th, 2010 at 10:39 pm
Young,
Also, according to Priest, the only reason that people badmouth JR is because we’re all racists. He thinks (and SAYS) that JR is great and we all just don’t want to give a black QB any credit and that we exaggerate his lack of performance, lack of motivation, lack of attending meetings, and lack of exercise/preparation because he is black. The funny thing is that he says this not just to white guys… but to black guys, too! According to Priest, any criticism of JR’s play is based on the critic being racist.
April 10th, 2010 at 10:40 pm
Do you really want to compare Ben having a gut after spending MONTHS recovering from major surgery and not being allowed to practice to JR having a gut?
April 10th, 2010 at 10:42 pm
Priest,
Go watch JR’s high school game videos. He was lean and mobile. He was 6′5″ as a freshman and 6′6″ by graduation, so you can’t blame the gut on him growing. He got lazy and fat… and it has hurt his performance. He can’t move as well as he used to, can’t run as well, and can’t even drop back as well. The only thing that he has kept in shape is his arm. I saw the old gamefilms, so I know that he doesn’t naturally carry a gut, so it’s not just a part of his build. He’s lazy.
April 10th, 2010 at 10:42 pm
Haha, if Russell is a Pro Bowler, that must mean Bruce Gradkowski is the reincarnation of Y.A. Tittle.
April 10th, 2010 at 10:43 pm

Young,
I have ALWAYS hated Albert Haynesworth. That having been said, since we don’t have to worry about a salary cap, I would be okay with trading a 2nd or 3rd (reportedly what will be required) to get a proven fatguy who can occupy two blockers. The Skins are going to commit to the switch to the 3-4, so Haynesworth will hold out if he isn’t traded. This puts Washington in a horrible position… one in which they will have to trade him for less than he’s worth… AFTER they’ve paid his $20mil roster bonus. I hate having “me” guys like him on the team, but the bottom line is production on the field… and there aren’t many 4-3 DTs who can claim to be as good as he is AND are available for us to go get. I’d argue that he’d be better for us than Suh or McCoy. He’s already a PROVEN commodity, rather than a draftee. As much as I hate myself for saying it, I say we trade for Haynesworth.
That doesn’t make me want to go MLB (McClain) in the 1st, though. I still say take the best available OL until the 3rd. If Spikes is there in the 3rd, take him. If he’s gone, take OL until the 5th, then take Micah Johnson in the 5th. Our first 7th should be Connor and then the last pick should be a really fast RB or CB who can pull duty as a returner.

I won’t bother to post the pics of JR’s gut… because I’ve done it a few times before and it makes me sad. I’ve just proven that Ben has NOT had a gut his entire career with those pics. Race has nothing to do with it, you are just using that as an excuse to try to discredit any criticism of JR. You are pathetic.

First off, about last night, I didn’t like how I came off.
I could not disagree more with your opinions, specifically on Russell, but you’re certainly entitled to them.
I really don’t want to get into pissing matches in here like some. I just want to talk Raiders.
Whether or not you call me a racist doesn’t really matter to me anymore, I let it get under my skin.
So I apologize for the tone last night and I am just gonna move on.

205. Haynesworth is the best DT in the game…when he wants to be. Always injured and a prima donna.
Like his meanness, but pretty cwertain he’s not worth Oakland breaking the bank on.
Not terribly worried about him going to division rivals if the rumors are true that Haynes worth doesn’t wan to be an NT in the 3-4.

Peace brutha!
Dan’s a reach and getting the ball back with good defense doesn’t make sense with how awful they’ve been.
Oaklands D is built to defend the pass and points. As long as the O keeps going 200 plays between TDs, its not going to improve.
Fraid we gotta go O line.
I like Bulaga and frankly, he may be there. KC needs to safety if they’re smart and Bulaga’s thyroid scare could see him slip.
Williams is my pick, but whether he’s there we’ll see. Wether Davis takes a lineman, well, we’ll see…
April 10th, 2010 at 11:14 pm
Nnamdi,
You may have misunderstood me, bro. When I said that I have always hated Haynesworth, I meant that in terms of liking him as a person. His demeanor always rubbed me the wrong way, but there was never any doubting his capability on the field. I don’t like his attitude and am afraid of the influence his persona will have with and on his teammmates, but I can’t refuse the opportunity to put him in a Raiders uniform if it arises. What are your thoughts on having him here?
(Also, thank you for knowing that it’s “prima donna.” I can’t stand seeing pre madonna or other such retarded variants being posted. I don’t know why, but the low literacy level exhibitied here sometimes just kills me. For just that one phrase, I most sincerely THANK YOU! You have restored a measure of my faith in humanity.)

Nnamdi,
Frankly, I’ve been saying for YEARS that our first priority should be Offensive Line… and I still feel that way. I don’t want to trade up for Suh or McCoy. I want to trade DOWN so that we can get more OL prospects and MAYBE Dan Williams or another good-against-the-run DT. However, I would be okay with trading our 2nd for Haynesworth, then trading down our 1st to get a few more OL and calling it a day. That would actually make me quite happy.

I agree. There are other moves Oakland could make besides Haynseworth that would be worse. Just not sure they’re going to jump big with FA money so soon.
Ha! prima donna. No problem!
217. Is logical and makes sense. Deep O line draft year.
Because its logical and rational, Davis likely won’t do it.
All great Raider teams have had good O lines. Hope they get back to that starting April 22nd.

LMFAO! I almost want to quit the internet sometimes, lol. I grew up poor white trash on a tobacco farm, but my mom was a teacher, so I was very well educated and I tested on a college reading level midway through middle school. This upbringing has made it nearly impossible to comprehend how people can be so stupid and makes it nearly unbearable to try to communicate with people through text.
On a side-note: everyone needs to vote in their communities, whichever they may be, to raise the pay for the teachers in your area. My mother was a teacher and we had a farm… and we STILL didn’t have enough income to disqualify us from geting foodstamps. This country is a mess… and the only way to get out of it is through education. The only way to improve education is to raise the salary for teachers up to a level where the truly intelligent will not only be able to survive on teaching wages, but will also WANT to do it because it will be the best option for them. In all societies that flourished, teachers were held in high regard and rewarded as such. When a society pays its teachers less than crumbs (as ours does), then stupidity abounds and the society becomes what we see around us today. *sigh*
April 10th, 2010 at 11:30 pm
Steve,
I agree that teachers should be better compensated. They should be rewarded for good performance.
I would disagree that education is the answer to our problems though. I think we have lost our moral compass.
The further we move away from God the worse things get.

I would rather avoid getting into a religious discussion because I don’t want to offend you or get you worked up. I agree with you on a lot of things and would hate to ruin an amicable situation by discussing something about which I have strong views that would probably piss you off. I will respectfully decline to comment on your statement there, bro.

As far as Haynesworth goes, that’s exactly how I feel. Never liked the guy, but the fact is he’s one of the best players at his position. He’s the kind of player offenses have to plan around, and that’s unlike anything we currently have on the defensive line. His skills would be completely wasted in a 3-4. And to be honest, I just think it’d be cool to have Seymour and Haynesworth on the same defensive line.
For the price (now that the Redskins have taken the brunt of his contract), there’s not a single player on the market right now who would have anywhere near the same impact as Haynesworth would, and he can be acquired for not much more than a 2nd round pick. Seems like a pretty good deal to me.
Who knows, maybe a 1st round pick can get Campbell as well as Haynesworth, and then the Raiders can use the second round pick to get Jared Gaither from the Ravens. Those are all players who would make an immediate impact. Al Davis is better at drafting in the later rounds anyway, he’d be better off trading those top picks on proven veterans.
April 11th, 2010 at 12:04 am
I popped back in for one more quick check of the posts before heading out the door and I agree very much with you, Young, especially on packaging our first for a player and a QB in those two trades… except for one key detail. I lived in D.C. for a few years, so I follow the Skins pretty closely. If I had to rate my fandom, I would be a Raiders fan to the level of infinity, but I root for the Skins whenever they play anyone other than us. Having said that, I’m very familiar with their team and can say with complete certainty that the best QB on their roster is Suisam… the punter. I would give our 2nd for Haynesworth, then trade our 1st for Gaither and Troy Smith.

Steve,
I agree that teachers should be better compensated. They should be rewarded for good performance.
I would disagree that education is the answer to our problems though. I think we have lost our moral compass.
The further we move away from God the worse things get.

Okay, I have returned from my visit, but will be leaving again shortly. I’ll hit the board long enough to make this statements:
Why exactly is it that Christians have the audacity to say that religion and morality even RELATED to each other, much less mutually inclusive? The least moral people that I know are the most religiously devoted. Morality is part of humanity… it is not dictated by “god.” Belief in god is used in many cases to justify hatred, discrimination, and bigotry. If you don’t like what I’m doing and your little book says that it’s bad, then you feel completely justified in lecturing me on my morality… while you continue to do all the immoral things that you wish, using god’s plan or our holy scriptures as justification for it all… then, if the stuff you did wasn’t within the lines of “okay” with the bible, you just “repent” and say that you’re now good with god and all is well.
No matter what your pastor tells you, this country was not founded as a christian nation. MOST of the founding fathers were deists, not theists. They believed in “a god,” but not “the god.” Specifically, they didn’t believe in Abrahamic god. Do some research on the founding fathers’ views of christianity if you don’t believe me; there were lots of writings by them on the subject.
The man credited with writing the Declaration of Independence was Thomas Jefferson. Christians read that document and think that it sets us up as a christian nation because of a few key phrases. That’s a fine little delusion if you like it, but go read what he has to say about your religion if you want a rude awakening. He also committed one of the most blasphemous acts defined in the bible… he cut up “god’s word” and removed parts that he didn’t like, took out any parts that made Jesus “godlike,” took out all the mysticism and magic, and basically left in just the parts about loving your neighbor and the nifty allegories. Look up the “Jefferson Bible” for more info. If you think he was a christian, that the Declaration of Independence or Constitution set us up as a christian nation, or that the founding fathers set us up to be a religious state, then you are WOEFULLY misinformed, ignorant, or delusional.
The First Amendment doesn’t exist to protect your right TO religion, it exists to protect the citizens FROM religion… specifically to keep religious people from getting power and using that power to push their ideology down the public’s throat, force their “morality” on the citizenry, and write laws that are religiously motivated. This country hasn’t gone downhill because it moved away from god, it went downhill because it started being run by people “close to god.” Religious nutbags aren’t only brown people who wear turbans…

The glittering genius of the Cold, Hard Football Facts is that we admire only numbers and productivity.
We put little stock in a player’s pedigree. And we put even less stock in the “pundits” and their outdated weapon of choice, the opinion, which bounces off the steely armor of our analysis so helplessly, like nothing but little pebbles of pigskin overwhelmed by our M1A1 Abrams tank of truth.
So it is today that we dive into one of the biggest stories of the 2010 NFL draft by looking at the college productivity of six legendary quarterbacks here in the modern pass-happy era.
Six Big-Name College Quarterbacks
Player Comp. Att. Pct. Yards YPA TD INT Rating*
Player A 851 1,354 62.85 11,201 8.27 90 33 100.93
Player B 825 1,232 66.96 8,772 7.12 76 37 95.60
Player C 841 1,383 60.81 10,286 7.44 84 36 93.15
Player D 493 797 61.86 6,625 8.31 52 21 99.04
Player E 564 986 57.20 7,731 7.84 51 33 85.72
Player F 661 985 67.11 9,286 9.43 88 15 120.72
* Using the NFL formula for passer rating, not the NCAA formula
The numbers aren’t even close. One player dominates. One player leaps screaming off the list, like Horshack on “Welcome Back Kotter” when he knew the answer to a question: “Pick me! Pick me! Pick me!”
That dominant individual, of course, is Player F. This quarterback:
· Was the most accurate of any of these six passers.
· Dominated the average per attempt category – our favorite number – by better than 1 yard per attempt over the No. 2 player on the list.
· Boasts a passer rating so sky high it defies description, nearly 20 full points better than the No. 2 player on the list.
Elsewhere, Player F was No. 2 in total TD passes – but easily No. 1 in TD pass percentage. Player F threw a TD on 8.9 percent of his pass attempts – easily outpacing Player A, who threw a touchdown on 6.6 percent of his pass attempts.
Finally, Player F protected the ball much better than any of the other quarterbacks on this list. Player F threw an interception on just 1.52 percent of attempts – easily outpacing Player C, who threw an interception on 2.60 percent of attempts. And you know what we’ve always told you: quarterbacks who throw picks lose games. Quarterbacks who don’t throw picks win games.
Dying to know who they are, arentcha? Well, the numbers represent the college career stats of six of the greatest quarterbacks in the modern history of the SEC. Here goes:
· Player A is Peyton Manning. He played for Tennessee in the SEC and was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1998 draft.
· Player B is Tim Couch. He played for Kentucky in the SEC and was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1999 draft.
· Player C is Eli Manning. He played for Ole Miss in the SEC and was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 draft.
· Player D is JaMarcus Russell. He played for LSU in the SEC and was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft.
· Player E is Matt Stafford. He played for Georgia in the SEC and was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 draft.
· And, finally, Player F is Tim Tebow. He played for Florida and the SEC and will be far from the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 draft.
The list tells us many things.
First, it tells us that the SEC has dominated the draft in recent years, as you probably already knew. But five guys at the most important position on the field taken No. 1 overall in a 12-year stretch is a remarkable accomplishment, even by the lofty standards of the dominant conference in college football.
Second, it tells us that NFL talent evaluators are out of their f*cking minds.
Tebow, as you know, is the biggest question mark in the 2010 draft among the pigskin punditistas. He’s the highest rated passer in the history of SEC football. He was easily a better passer than Peyton Manning or Matt Stafford or Tim Couch or any of the guys whose ability to pass was never really questioned by NFL talent analysts.
And yet NFL evalautors for some reason aren’t sold on Tebow. Couch and Russell are two bona fide NFL busts, even though pro football talent evaluators couldn’t usher them into the league fast enough. Yet these same talent evaluators harbor grave doubts about the ability of the greatest and most efficient passer in SEC history to pass the ball at the next level.
Consider, Charley Casserly, the longtime NFL executive turned NFL Network analyst, who was on the air Thursday telling the world that Tebow will go no higher than the fourth round of the draft next month.
Other executives seem obsessed by the trivia over Tebow’s mechanics, while overlooking the rather irrefutable fact that he dominated college football like no player in memory and despite the fact that he was, by any objective measure, a much better passer than Couch, Russell, Stafford, and either of the Manning brothers.
Tebow not only passed the ball far more effectively than any of these No. 1 overall picks. It pays to remember that, in his spare time, he set the SEC career record for rushing touchdowns. Oh, and he won a Heisman Trophy and two national titles. Other than that, he didn’t do much.
The anti-Tebow crowd will argue, weakly, that he was surrounded by greater talent than those other passers.
The anti-Tebow crowd, of course, has its head up its ass.
Let’s look at Peyton Manning. Last we remember, he played with not one, not two but three receivers taken in the top two rounds of the draft: Joey Kent, Marcus Nash and Peerless Price. His team was so loaded with talent that it won the national title the year after he left.
JaMarcus Russell played with arguably the most talented teams of the past decade. They won national titles in 2003 and 2007 and he watched as 34 of his LSU teammates were grabbed in the NFL draft.
Stafford? Well, Georgia is a prolific pipeline of NFL talent. Stafford was one of three starting offensive players from the 2008 Bulldogs taken in the first 50 picks of the 2009 draft (Knowshon Moreno, Mohamed Massaquoi).
Ole Miss is hardly the SEC’s best hotbed of talent. But almost the entire offensive line that protected Eli Manning was good enough to earn a shot in the NFL, including not one but two of his centers: Ben Claxton (2003 draft) and Chris Spencer (2005), one of a small handful of centers ever taken in the first round of the NFL draft.
Couch? Sure, he didn’t have much around him. In fact, he’s one of just three first-round draft picks to come out of Kentucky in the last 25 years. But in any case, his passing numbers pale in comparison to those produced by Tebow.
The anti-Tebow crowd could also throw out the old David Klingler argument. You know, “anybody can put up big stats in the college game.”
But Tebow didn’t just put up big stats … he put up supremely efficient stats. He was more accurate, and produced more big passing plays, and was more likely to put the ball in the end zone, and more likely to keep it out of the hands of opposing defenders, than any of the recent collection of No. 1 passing phenoms to come out of the SEC.
Tebow was, by any measure, a better player, a better quarterback and, yes, a better passer than any of these No. 1 picks.
We understand that college success does not translate to NFL success. The long history of Heisman winners turned NFL busts underscores that argument.
However, in the gamble that is the NFL draft, we’ll roll the dice on the proven and unmatched passing talent of Tebow rather than on the sorry track record of pro football talent evaluators.

Alright, I’m heading back out. Feel free to discuss what I said in my absence. I’m sure that all the good christians will call me a liar and say that I’m full of it… even though I backed up all my claims and told you to look up what you don’t believe. They make this handy took on the intarwebs called “Google” where you can go type in something like, oh say… “founding fathers deists” and see what’s there or possibly… “Jefferson views on christianity” or even “Jefferson bible.”
I even forgot to mention the Pledge of Allegiance. It was written by a PASTOR… but funnily enough, didn’t contain the phrase “under god.” It made no mention of religion at all, as was dictated for all government stances by the Constitution.
Then, in the height of McCarthyism, in an effort to distance ourselves from the “godless” communists, Congress voted to add the phrase “under god” to the Pledge. Once again, the religious majority pushed its views on the public and violated the right guaranteed by the First Amendment for any schoolchild to NOT have religion pushed on him by the government. How was it pushed? The taxes that we pay the government funds our schools. Schools require kids to say the Pledge of Allegiance. Any child who doesn’t wish to participate in anything having to do with religion is forced to say it. Think it’s harmless? How would you feel if Muslims got control of Congress (legally, through elections) and passed a Congressional Act changing it to “under Allah” Would you still be so lenient about it then?
Do you want to cry about how prayer was taken out of schools? Let me be the first to correct you, dear bleeding-heart christian: Prayer was NEVER taken out of schools. What was taken out? FORCED PRAYER. Any student who wants to pray may do so silently as long as he/she doesn’t disrupt classroom activities. Back in the day, the teachers would lead the class in a prayer every day, usually multiple times daily. I bet you christians aren’t seeing a problem yet, right? You’re saying, “Well, if the kid doesn’t want to take part in the prayer, they don’t have to. No problem.” Now imagine the same situation, with your child in the class… and the teacher is Jewish… or Hindu… or Muslim. Do you still say the same thing? Are you still okay with the teacher leading that prayer for the class to participate in? Why is it so abhorrently wrong for someone who believes differently to force their religion on YOU… but perfectly acceptable for you to force YOUR beliefs on me… or on the impressionable young minds of our country’s children? It’s not… and that’s why FORCED PRAYER was banned from public schools.
I’m fully prepared for them to say whatever they want in order to defend their beliefs in a fairy tale about the big man in the sky who watches everything that they do and loves them and has a mansion in the sky waiting for them with streets of gold and pearly gates when they die. He loves them so much that he sent himself to earth as himself and then allowed himself to be killed while asking help from himself just so they can get forgiveness from him for being the way that he made them.

I don’t see Williams at No. 8. I think he’ll be a good player, but I think we can fill this important role on defense in the later rounds or free agency. Basically, we’re looking for a Grady Jackson, Gilbert Brown type elephant to just clog a good chunk of the line. Those two and many others who have excelled in that role were taken much later in the draft.
April 11th, 2010 at 7:22 am
Steve
I have worked for many generals as a sub and the worse ones were by far the “Christians”
Some of the crap they pulled on me and others was in direct opposition to the teachings of the Bible, yet they would brag about going to Church and doing works at the same time.
One reason for this IMHO is the devil and the rest of the fallen angels “work” on Christians instead of “heathens” because Christians will “save” more people whereas heathens are only gonna help people spend eternity in hell with him.
I am of the belief that the Bible is truth however I do not go around beating people with it. I dont think I have ever even mentioned it in here. I just wanted to let you know that all Christians are not the same just as all heathens are not the same. Some are moral and some are not, just like Christians.
Take teachers as an example. Your mom must be a very good teacher, who loves educating young people, however many, teachers are just there for a paycheck and many more are rotten inside and out as well as being too stupid to learn, let alone teach.
Yet we dont lump all teachers in the same pot and we should not lump all Christians in a pot as well.
April 11th, 2010 at 7:25 am
I don’t agree with Jerry’s assessment of the DT situation.
They don’t need a nose tackle type of DT. They need a penetrator.
Tommy Kelly was supposed to be the guy who split the blocks and got into the backfield but clearly he is not doing that. I think he signed the big contract and ate his way into a blocking sled. He doesn’t has the quickness or the slashing ability to do the job he was signed to do. I doubt he ever did, but that’s another topic.
Sapp was effective because he got upfield penetration. That disruptive blocking patterns and didn’t allow teams to run effectively to the outside. Plus it collapsed the passing pocket.
Warren, Kelly, and formerly Sands are just three bodies. None of them could penetrate into the backfield. Which is the biggest reason why teams have to double team a defensive tackle.
It is simple math. If you have two DT’s who require double team blocking, there is still only three interior linemen to block them. A constant mismatch.
Getting a big fat body who just takes up space will not accomplish anything.
April 11th, 2010 at 7:40 am
I guess the religion is the topic du jour.
What else to write about on a Sunday morning when there’s game coming up.
I personally believe that the bible is a good foundation for moral behaviour. Even if you don’t believe in all the supernatural aspects of it, there is still a good system of values and social responsibilities that can be taken from it.
Unfortunately there are always people that pick and choose from the writings to justify their own poor behaviour. Like when someone says, ” the Lord helps those who help themselves,” in order to justify their own greedy behaviour.
People still should act properly and decent towards each other, and not just claim a higher morality because they attend church every weekend or have a dusty bible tucked away in a drawer.
That’s my two cents.

Since Cable took over the Raiders have been very methodical about how they are rebuilding.
1.Only high character players.
2.Only good value salary commensurate with production.
3.Accountability is paramount and is supported by Mr. Davis
The mess that was created with Kiffin (I know that Mr Davis is ultimately responsible) has finally been cleaned up. Hall,Walker,Wilson,Warren,Burgess,Green etc. finally gone.
I supported the JR pick though I was cautious to predict him as a project.
After that I have been preaching to REBUILD THE LINES and that has been delayed and our suffering has continued.
Football is won along the line of scrimmage and that will be addressed in this draft.
We will draft OT,DT,OG or ILB in that order and we will start to win.
Guaranteed.
Dmac is alot like Charlie Smith, Clarence Davis. He is solid ballplayer and he will be good. Get him some BLOCKING.
DHB looks alot like Branch. Branch did nothing in his first three years.
JR may not make it. I guarantee he is not making $9 mill this year. His contract has been renegotiated and if he does not progress rapidly he will be cut.
Kelly must produce or he will be cut.
We are on our way.

Florida Pete,
All well and good with the Tebow stats, there. I would ask these two question, however, because (as we all know), stats can be deceiving:
How many of the passing yards Tebow is credited with are yards gained after the catch, and where and how far was he actually throwing those passes? It struck me, having seen Florida play many times during Tebow’s career there, that the team relied heavily on getting the ball to their skill players quickly and letting them make plays.
Short passes, high completion percentage, lots of yards (after the catch). Can skew the stats. Ask Steve Young.

Mr Davis always has solicited opinions from his coaches and scouts.
I assure you much of the spending and craziness that went on under Kiffin had alot to do with Kiffin.
His MO was obvious at Tennessee and Mr Davis predicted what would happen when he left the Raiders and it did.
All of that being said, Mr Davis has ALWAYS built teams from the outside in.
His thinking is use very high first round picks on elite skill players and as you get better you will use lower first round picks (15 and higher)on lineman.
That is what we are doing.
I prefer to build the lines first because I think you become better faster but Mr Davis is taking a methodical approach and it will work.
The biggest miss has been JR.
I fully supported the pick though I did caution that he will be a project.

Good call Charlie.
Al is large and in charge and he wants to win whereas some owners are more concerned with the bottom line and putting a decent product on the field.
Al will do everything under his power to possess another VL.
It sounds like Al made a play for McNabb. A smart play because he did not simply offer more then the Skins.
I predict a blockbuster trade coming soon from Al.
He needs someone to stop the dam run so he can draft oline and hope that JR becomes a better then average QB at the worse.

Mr Davis will not go after another veteran via trade or free agency.
He got Seymour because we simply could not compete on the Dline and Seymour is a very high character guy.
McNabb was never in play.
I see Vegas is back on line.
Vegas: my point about drafting lineman with high picks is for the Raiders TODAY and for the last seven years.
Our lines are in AWFUL shape due to years of neglect.
Our run defense stats are the best evidence in the world (please do not talk about weak safety play and MLB play as the primary cause). It is a WEAK LINE that is to blame first and foremost.
Our offensive line nearly got three QB’s killed last year.
I agree that if you have a solid core unit you can try second and third rounders to keep the units strong.
We simply do not have that core group in place yet.
We will invets out first two picks this year on lineman.
It is essential.

I took your advise and googled Martin Luther. It said he changed or omitted 18 books of bible. There are also 7 more books in the Catholic bible than in the Protestant bible.
I would love to stay and find out your thoughts on that and discuss it further, but I’m late for a visit and have to go now. Please go ahead and post everything you think about what I’ve just proposed and I’ll read it when I get back tomorrow. I really am genuinely interested in what you have to say on the subject. See, I don’t think Jason Campbell is entirely deserving of the bad rap he got playing in Washington. There are a few things about him I like. First of all, his improved every year he was the starter. Secondly he has a very positive attitude an a solid (dare I say, Gradkowski-like?) work-ethic. Thirdly, he’s very physically gifted, which means that if he works on his decision-making, the sky is the limit for him. The only thing is, assuming coaching was the main problem for Campbell in DC, I’m not entirely convinced the coaching he’ll get here will be any better (although with Ted Tollner and Paul Hackett still around, who knows).
That said, I do like Troy Smith quite a bit and I think he deserves a shot at being a starting QB in this league. Although it’s worrying that his former offensive coordinator hasn’t pushed to bring him in, I try not to read much into it because I’m sure that selling Big Al on bringing in specific players, especially at the QB position, isn’t the easiest thing to do.
Another QB I think deserves some consideration is Chris Redman of the Falcons, who played respectably before the Matt Ryan era began. He also did a pretty decent job filling in for Ryan when he was injured last season.
The point is, the Raiders absolutely need to bring another QB in to compete with Russell and Gradkowski.
That said, The draft is loaded with mid-late round talent, and I think if Al brings in another QB it’ll be through the draft. I think Dan LeFevour and Tony Pike are both very interesting prospects, and I’d love to see what those guys can do in camp.

Charlie,
My feelings on the O-line is not the same for the D-line.
IMO, D-line is the 2nd most important position behind QB.
I just think our O-line concerns are a tad overstated. The last three years we have been a top 10 rushing team twice (last year 21st).
I have always said that our drafting issues isn’t the position it is the player. As long as the guy in the first round is solid, I really don’t care what position.
But if we draft Bruce Campbell, he can flop and still set the team back again.
April 11th, 2010 at 9:36 am
Even Ravens bloggers are pushing for Gaither-to-Raiders.
Check it:
http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/ravens/blog/2010/04/gaither_and_the_draft.html
It does cite his less-than-stellar work ethic. But he’d make an immediate impact on our offensive line play, and if we drafted some young OT prospect behind him, he could be a very solid stopgap move to get the Raiders competitive again.

LT DAN,
if you wish to check further, there was a gathering of all the High Muckety Mucks of early Christiandom in Constantinople in the 4th or 5th century A.D. whereat they decided what was proper to allow as New Testament and what was to be thrown out. Things that did not fit with their version of reality were dismissed.
Some of those excised teachings, such as The Gospel of Thomas can be found in a book entitled the Nag Hammadi Library (translations of ancient documents found in sealed jars in 1946 in the Egyptian desert). Makes for some very interesting reading of Christ’s teachings.

I hope that happens AFTER the draft. Otherwise, you know who will be on the roster after April 22nd

SnB,
I agree with Russell needing to be pushed.
I agree that Grads should not be handed the job for the same reasons Russell shouldn’t.
Just “don’t know” if Campbell is the direction I’d like to go in. Honestly would like to see Russell behind an adequate Oline and with a decent play caller. If Russell isn’t the answer, I’d like a guy like John Skelton, or maybe even Colt McCoy.

Huff is cleary the 2nd best DB on the team, and the first guy who has been able to play the single deep safety at a high level since Rod Woodson, IMO.

281. I think sometimes the purpose of religion is to inveigle and obfuscate.
The whole pirpose is to deny and limit knowledge.
What was the demise of man in the garden of Eden? the tree of KNOWLEDGE.
Organized “western” religion asks for blind “faith” which meqans a denial of reason, logic and too foten compassion.
Questioning religion itself is controlled by thought stopping because their are no real answers many times.
None that makes sense.
The technique is called thought stopping and often involves demonizing.
“Questioning something about our religion we can’t answer? Thats Satan tempting you!”
My religion? COMPASSION (above all) Reason, Logic by a quantification of facts from as many diverse sources as possible and deducing which is the more likely by a preponderance.
God dwells within our hearts and actions.
Bad news for religions like Mormons and others who try to corner the market and profit big time.

With all the talk about prospects here Some moves Oakland should make but probably won’t.
1. Move on Jason Campbell for a 3rd or 4th rounder. I think is he a Flacco type QB that would work well with Oakland is doing and has some mobility while OK rebuilds its line.
2. After making this move cut JR save some money (unless there is something I do not know about a personal “Jesus moment” with JRs work ethic.
3. Let BG and JC battle for QB
4. Raider board should be:
Note: Teams don’t do mock drafts they have boards for draft positions
1. Trent Williams – Completes outer flanks of offensive line if other higher rated OTs available take them but I don’t think that is realistic
2. Dan Williams – Allows Oakland to convert to 3/4 defense and personal would then be in place for that and there should be improved run defesne
3. If DW and TW are off board and for some reason Clausen or Suh is on the board attempt to trade down (this is something AD never does but there will be opportunities if these guys slip to 8. One of these two will likely be there if both DW and TW are off board.)
In the second round they should look for a run stuffing DT if they take TW if they take DW they should look hard at the best Center prospect available. The OTs left at this point are probably not worth taking.
April 11th, 2010 at 10:34 am
275. Charlie, we may NOT invest the 2 picks on the lines. I agree, we should, but Davis might be thinking “No, thats just what they’d EXPECT me to do!”
April 11th, 2010 at 10:34 am
My opinion is that the Oline is the most important unit on the team.
1. With a solid offense your defense is simply not on the field making the defense better by default.
2. Football is a game of time and space.
EVERY skill position player needs time and space to be effective.
Some need more than others but they all need it.
The offensive line is the only unit on the team whose sole purpose is to create time and space.
3. QB is the second most important “unit” on the team.
The problem is that without a solid Oline, the QB is either hurt or inconsistent. Tom Brady is a classic case of what happens when a good QB is not protected.
4.The D Line is the third most important unit.
Its’ sole purpose is to ELIMINATE time and space.
This unit can make DB’s and LB’s better than their individual skill sets would allow because they either do not have to cover as long or they do not have to take on downfield blocks etc.
I would love to find the next Jonathan Ogden in the seventh round.
It should be obvious that the percentages say you will have a better CHANCE of finding the next Jonathan Ogden in the first round.
We are desperate on both lines and need help NOW.

LOL …
I love Raider Church on Sundays.
Good informative stuff from Alford, M, and the rest of the Raider deacons.
April 11th, 2010 at 10:41 am
Davis likes to be diverse so teams can’t pigeon hole the Raiders and truthfully, most chapionship teams are multi-dimensional.
When Oakland lined up in a 3-4, especially last year, they’ve looked good more often than not.
They won’t dedicate themselves to a full time 3-4. They don’t have to.
Whether thats good or not? I can see the merits.
I think the core will remain 4-3 with the usual variations, 5-2, Wolverine, goal line ect.
April 11th, 2010 at 10:42 am
Charlie,
Walker and Barnes seem like inevitible starters. RT and RG seem to have their names on it.
You seem to think that OT will be the pick at 8. Even if Williams is gone? Will anyone other than Okung or Williams move Henderson to backup status?
April 11th, 2010 at 10:43 am
Hadn’t heard about Gaither’s problems with being lazy. Frankly, never looked too hard at him cuz I don’t see him coming to Oakland, but the times I’ve seen him play, he’s been productive.
Agree we don’t need another lazy guy though. He would provide some beef on the line to move the pile in short yards
April 11th, 2010 at 10:44 am
I think if there is a job opening on the lines for the #8 pick it would be along the Dline.
DE if Seymour moves to DT or DT if Seymour is staying at DE.
Unless of course Henderson is on his way out of Oakland like Gaither is on his way out of Baltimore.

Walker and Barnes are backups at best.
Henderson developing.
Gallery coming off back surgery. No guarantees on that one.
Satele C+
Carlisle 33 and declining.
We are in big trouble on the oline.
First pick is an OT. Second pick DT.
Third pick OG or ILB.
April 11th, 2010 at 10:51 am

Nnamdi,
Here is the info on Gaither’s work habit. You dont just let a good Tackle go for a 2nd rounder. There has to be a reason why. the following is from PFT.
A clue to why Jared Gaither is available
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on April 11, 2010 11:41 AM ET
There is an obvious red flag to any team that’s interested in Ravens tackle Jared Gaither: Baltimore is willing to move him.
The Ravens know what a quality tackle looks like. The fact they are reportedly eager to deal Gaither for a second-round pick should create doubt in the minds of interested teams.
I’ve wondered why Baltimore was willing to part ways, and got a clue Sunday in the Baltimore Sun. Ken Murray refers to Gaither’s “half-baked work ethic.” (That’s better than wake-n-baked work ethic.)
Gaither has put enough impressive play on film that he’s still among the more likely veterans to get dealt on the draft’s second day.
April 11th, 2010 at 10:59 am
305,
walker held his own and actually played pretty productive when pressed into guard duty despite being a late pick up and not playing guard before that. i think that if he is put at rg from day 1 that he will be ok. he would be better than carlisle. who knows about barnes. he played decent in jax until his final season there where he flamed out. never got to see him last year because he got so far behind with his injury and his reluctance to move to rt. i would rather draft pouncey and get a road grader at center. satele and morris? those guys get man handled every play.

Personally, I think we are set by Cable’s standards and probably won’t go Oline until rd 3 at the earliest. I’d be SHOCKED if Henderson is out at LT. Not mad, but SHOCKED.

Oline and Dline help shouldn’t mean disregard value.
I agree that Okung, Williams, Iupati, or Pouncey would be good value picks in the first rd. Other than that, too many options at 8 to lock in on OT.

April 11th, 2010 at 11:32 am
J,
I don’t see why would get rid of Mario at LT. He struggled at times, but it was basically his first full year at LT.
Every year there is a handful of LT’s taken in the first round. I would give Mario one more year at LT, and if he doesn’t improve, than go get a LT next year.
And Mario is an Al Davis guy, which is all that really matters.
April 11th, 2010 at 11:33 am

April 11th, 2010 at 11:36 am
At this stage, I would rather draft a QB in the 3rd or 4th round and see what you have, rather than trade for Campbell.
Campbell is who he is, a high completion % guy, who is good for an 18-15 TD-INT ratio and takes way too many sacks.
Would he help us in 2010? Probably. But he has played with Pro Bowlers all over the field (LT, RB, TE, WR) and never even got his team into the playoffs.
Remember 2007, when the Skins were 5-7 with Campbell, than he got hurt and Todd Collins came in and went 4-0 to end the season and get them in the playoffs.
April 11th, 2010 at 11:37 am
SnB,
Personally not looking for a band aid veteran QB to start this year. Need to get answers on Russell or Gradkowski behind a decent Oline and with an adequate play caller.
If those guys aren’t the answer, we need to be looking at the draft, not someone else’s failed project.

April 11th, 2010 at 11:39 am
Jeremy,
I guess we’ll see about DHB. Personally wanted Maulauga or Orakpo.
But the Raiders felt that DHB was the best WR in the draft, that would add to what JLH and Chaz brought to the table.
Not sure that the #1 OT on the Raiders board will be there at 8.
April 11th, 2010 at 11:40 am
We tried the backup route as starters with Green and Harris. Disastrous.
Free agents are free for a reason.
I am telling you Oline is the first round pick.
It leverages everyone on the offense and protects our QB. As I said earlier, it is possible that Gallery could be out are inneffective given surgery and Barnes had his chance and could not beat out Green. Walker is on the downside of his career as is Carlisle at 33.
DT is critical in the second round. Our run defense starts with the DT spot.
Third round we might go with a guard who could move Carlisle to the bench.
A solid ILB is also a possibility in round three.

Hold on. Even though I believe JR should start this year, I respect your argument that he should have to compete with Grads for it. But last year?? You think the only reason he started was because of the investment in him? You don’t think he deserved to go in as the unquestioned starter??
April 11th, 2010 at 12:55 pm
Debo,
I believe he should have been the unquestioned starter. I just don’t think it should have taken so long to bench him.
I supported him after week 1, I thought he played better than his stats looked, but once he went to KC the wheels completely fell off.
The 2008 version of Jamarcus would have never let Bruce even see the field. Something happened last year, and I hope Russell get his mojo back. I just am not very confidant in that happening.
April 11th, 2010 at 1:02 pm
Vegas you bring up a good point. I don’t know so much that Russell lost his mojo as much as other factors. Whether you are an offensive lineman, running back, these players have to put in an unbelievable amount of work to get to this level. So when the linemen are doing extra weight work, or receivers are staying late, or Grads is lifting on off days, or Frye is there at 6 in the morning, and where is Russell? Sleeping in?

You’ve been consistent with that take. I just didn’t get the part about him starting last year because of the investment. Fix the O line, save the Raiders
======================================================
So not stopping the run and letting the opponent hold the ball and score…and THEN give the ball to our anemic offense makes more sense?
Let’s face facts. The offense is going to be garbage until the Raiders get a real QB. Stop the run, run the ball and throw on playaction…that’s who we are
^^^^^^^^
Yeah…..in the end this team will not go anywhere without a good QB. I have confidence that Grads can run the offense but the O-Line needs a Center like Pouncey if they are going to ride with Mario and Khalif at the tackle positions and with L Walker at RG….the Center position is still a problem.
Pouncey would contribute immediately at Center and can play either Guard spots in case of injury. That kind of versatility is very important to the middle of that Raider O-Line.
Adding Pouncey or T Williams to the O-Line is important when it comes creating depth and versatility to an O-Line that is going to need it….especially if Grads is going to be the starter. Can’t afford to have him get hurt can we?
I have ZERO confidence in cough syrup/alcohol drinking Juggs Russell until he PROVES otherwise.

You’re hitting it right on the head. His work ethic, or lack therof, are issues because he had a bad year and we lost games. But I think the real issue was the supporting cast. Again, name a QB in the last 15 years that lit it up with 2 rookie WRs starting? And the OL play went downhill real quick after Gallery and Green got hurt. DHB killed JR and Grads and finally got benched. He should have been benched before JR IMO. And let’s not even talk about the running game. Richochet, how can you be certain the playbook has been dumbed down for Russell when we’ve been using a dumbed down playbook pretty much since Gannon left? I don’t care who said it’s been dumbed down, Cable or otherwise. The Raiders offensive gameplan is dumbed down by default. Al Davis believes in an offense that no longer worked in the ’70s. There’s a lot to blame Russell for but where I draw the line is where people start blaming him for things that have been going on here when he was still in high school. Russell is being used as a scapegoat by a lot of the kool aid drinkers who refuse to ever blame Al, and you’re just helping their cause by blaming Russell for the fact that the Raiders use a vanilla offense.

April 11th, 2010 at 1:34 pm
Seymour,
First off, hiring general managers, when you consider what winning owners do.
Allowing their GMs to build teams. Sure, some financial decisions that have an effect on football operations have to inevitably be made by the owner, but for the most part, most owners hire a football guy who knows what he’s doing.
Now, from a GM standpoint,
Most GM’s build from the trenches on out, with the QB typically being the first skill position player. Al Davis builds from the perimeter on in. He doesn’t believe the offensive line and the defensive front 7 are as important as corners and receivers, which is just stupid in today’s game.
I’ll ask you a question, Seymour. Take the New Orleans Saints, the world champions. What are the RAiders doing like the Saints? Better question yet, what are the Raiders doing TO BE BETTER than the Saints, since being the best should be the goal of every owner in this game?
Plunkethead said that Al Davis wants to win. Again, I’ve seen no signs of hit. But I await either yours or Plunketheads’ examples to the contrary.

The winners in the league are NOT glossing JaMarcus Russell.
The winners in the league dont play J Fargas when Bush & McFadden are on the roster.
The winners dont bench J Walker when he’s healthy enough to play so DHB can put a tire around our necks.
The winners don’t wait until week 10 to bench the 35th ranked Qb out of 32 NFL teams.
Of course you would have to have to know basic fundamentals to get any of this.

Seymour, I said most owners. Some owners know the game better than others. And when you look at Dallas’s results in recent years next to ours, I think it answers the question as to who knows more about the modern day game between Jerry and Al, doesn’t it? I hear a lot of Davis loyalists say that Al Davis knows the game better than any other owner. Unfortunately, Jerry Jones has dispelled that myth. Jones knows the game far better than Davis. That being said, Jones only gets Dallas to the playoffs anymore. They haven’t won a Super Bowl since they had Jimmy Johnson’s team, when he was essentially the coach/GM. Switzer won it with Johnson’s team in ‘96, just like Callahan took Gruden’s team to the Super Bowl in ‘02, and Gruden won it with Dungy’s team.
The point being argued here is Al Davis wanting to win.
I don’t see it.
Still waiting for examples. You seem to want to talk about DAllas now. We’re talking about THE RAIDERS, AL DAVIS, AND WHAT HE DOES TO WIN. I don’t see anything. Still waiting for your examples.
April 11th, 2010 at 1:40 pm
No it was Jimmy Johnson drafting E Smith, M Irvin, T Aikman, and J Novacek.
It was J Jones who ran out J Johnson when J Johnson was getting too much credit…A la AL Davis

MB, Al overpaying players doesn’t necessarily prove that he wants to win. There could be other nefarious reasons for overpaying players, like raising the market value of other players and bankrupting the teams seeking to sign them. When you consider Al’s history of off field battles, it fits his profile. So, I think his overpaying of free agents has more to do with that, his misery loves company approach to management today. I don’t see where he wants to win. He wants to win, he just goes out and gets the best players he can. We’re into a non cap year, aren’t we? What moves has Davis made for some of the top notch free agents? None. This man wants to win about as bad as he wants to see Jon Gruden or Lane Kiffin being on the front page of the paper holding the trophy under the headline, “Raiders finally do it”.

I know you don’t believe in the “rah-rah” stuff, but I believe HEAVILY in it at certain positions (QB being #1 on the list).
Just a couple of months away. Things will play themselves out in camp, and I believe Bruce will be starting week 1.

Now you’re just mad because I called you on it. My advice, stop exaggerating when trying to make a point. I suppose you’re trying to bluff people. Well, you’ve been called. So call me all the names you want.
=====================================
Yeah, yeah, I know..I know…you want my attention.
You know I’m going to torch your ass regarding the above, but..to you? That’s the idea..attention.
“Bought into what Cable said”??? LMFAO…you dumbass.
Kiffin commented on it, Cable commented on it, it’s ONLY OBVIOUS to all..but hey…that doesn’t matter…because you’re an idiot.
the above mentioned attention whore…that sorryass joke who infects this board daily with your juvenile screams for acceptance.
You’re the board motley fool, and you have been…for years.
and you just accept it…which backs up my previous comment about you needing help with those disorders.

aww..lol..look at Oakdorks waving of that white flag..
isn’t it fun when you slap someone down, to where they have NOTHING IN REPLY..and are reduced to “oh, look, he’s melting down”..trying to avoid the question.
You don’t really date, do you?
When someone goes out of their way to state ‘I have a hottie” that usually means they have a blow up doll.
When saying it twice, and called on whether it’s the same hottie?
goes into retreat mode..for some reason.
Sensitive issue, pumpkin?

Richochet, I don’t care if you pay attention to me or not. You said something about Russell that was complete b.s. And, to give you the benefit of the doubt, it is information that was passed on to the public via the spin of Al’s current Butterbean puppet head coach. But anyone who’s been following this team would know that our playbook has been dumbed down since Gannon cleaned his locker. Just dumb, predictable playcalling ever since. From Norv, to Shell, to Kiffin (even though he tried to change it, unsuccessfully), to Cable/Russell. Al Davis’s schemes on both sides of the ball have always been dumbed down. The Raiders did not dumb down their playbook for Russell. That’s just Cable talking out of his ass. But since you can’t be smart enough to pick and choose your source, and instead are on a mission to smear Russell, you ran with Cable’s take on Russell like a 12 year old girl runs with a rumor she just hear from another 12 year old girl. You got ahead of yourself, and I called you on it. Now you’re playing your stupid games, and I don’t care. I don’t need your attention. I’m just pointing out where you’re wrong.

DKnight,
I am looking forward to the day that Darth Raider finally throws Al down the shaft that extends into the depths of Raiders HQ.

Yep…..me too! LOL
A great and very fitting analogy!

Thanks for the laughs, peanut.
couldn’t have done it without you…
lol….yep…that was fun.
I have a feeling it’s going to happen again…for some….strange…reason.
April 11th, 2010 at 3:37 pm
RM? That’s it? BOTH head coaches state russell doesn’t know the playbook, yet you stupidly state “I’m not smart enough to pick and choose my source”???
WTF?
Are you stupid?
Seriously…see…the way it works is MOST state “you’re stupid to believe that anonymous source, or that reporter who got if from his anonymous source..and that one SHOULD wait until they actually hear it from…you know….THE HEAD COACH…but you?
You do it reverse?
You discount what the head coaches say…and then rely on…what source…exactly??
Lol..this should be fun.
April 11th, 2010 at 3:39 pm
Richochet, you said that they dumbed down the playbook for Russell. Dumbed down from what? The state of the art offense the Raiders were using before Russell got here? Do you believe everything the Raiders say?
April 11th, 2010 at 3:43 pm
In other words, YOU TELL ME to choose my source..I tell you the source IS THE HEAD COACH, and when questioned on what source you’re referring to you reply “Do you believe everything the SOURCE tells you’??
Ignorant reply…beyond ignorant.
What?
Now I have to dumbdown to your level?
What are you, 12?
Like I said, attention whore, you’re a waste…in every sense of the word.
April 11th, 2010 at 3:46 pm
LOL. If you want to really call Tom Cable a head coach. How long have you been watching the Raiders, genius? The only real head coach the Raiders have had since Gruden is Kiffin. I’m not going to let you do this, take the argument to an arena where you can win. You said that the Raiders dumbed down the playbook for Russell. I don’t care who in the organization said that, it’s b.s. My proof, and this is very simple: The Raiders offensive playcalling BEFORE Russell arrived, which is every bit as dumbed down and vanilla as it is now with Russell.

Just for that, I busted out my Cable jersey early this year. I put it away after the fourth game last year but he will turn it around this year.

Phil is trying on his third green jacket.
The good guys win every once in awhile.
April 11th, 2010 at 4:10 pm
That’s why you’re a Raider fan? You pull for the good guys?
April 11th, 2010 at 4:22 pm
If Phil Mickelson were an NFL football team, what NFL team would he be? Not necessarily where performance is concerned, but more as where character is concerned, regard for the rules, etc. I’m thinking the Raiders are somewhere near the bottom of the list.

I have a picture in my mind that will not go away.
Its little baby birds in the nest with their big mouths open making as much noise as they can just waiting for someone to drop something in their mouths.
Feed me!! feed me!!

That’s a better vision that some of the other things you’ve talked about, like your son’s grooming habits.
