Draft prospect: Anthony Davis
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 at 11:18 pm in Oakland Raiders.
No. 12 in a series analyizing potential selections for the Raiders, who pick No. 8 Thursday in the NFL draft:
College: Rutgers
Position: Offensive tackle
Height, weight: 6-5, 323
Why it’s Davis: Has great feet and agility to go with his size. Story similar to former Stanford tackle Bob Whitfield _ a nationally renowned high school recruit who opted for Rutgers in a surprise and became a very good player. Only 20 years old, Davis may have more “upside” than any tackle in the draft and unlike Bruce Campbell, has some actual production to go along with great feet and agility required to be a left tackle. He’s been a starter since midway through his freshman season and considering his age, 20, may have the bet upside of any tackle in the draft.
Why it’s not Davis: Work ethic and attention to detail was criticized at times, as Davis was able to coast on his natural ability. Weighed 366 pounds upon entering Rutgers but slimmed down to 315, temporarily losing his starting job as a sophomore because of weight gain. Had 21 bench press reps at 225 pounds _ 17 less than projected top five pick Russell Okung _ indicating he needs more upper body strength. With Tom Cable saying the goal is to get a starter with the top pick, No. 8 may be too high for Davis. He becomes a better option if the Raiders trade down in the round.
Quotable: “My athleticism helps me get out of a lot of situations. If I step the wrong way it helps me get back into position.”

He will probably be the Best OT left by #8.

Better Davis than another track star!
April 21st, 2010 at 11:39 pm
OT, DT, C, MLB, OG, FB, CB, PR/KR, that’s what we need along with better O-line back-ups.

For those of who like Too Short and bay area rap, or ever did, get Too Short: The Life and Times of Todd Shaw. Good documentary. Netflix has it. Really good footage and production, with the whose who of ’80s and early ’90s hip hop and r&b giving input.
April 21st, 2010 at 11:46 pm
Hard to get too excited when our last 5 31 picks have been Fabian, Huff, JaMarcus, DMac and DHB…can you say lack of production?
Not going to expect too much based on Al’s recent history.

Please Al!!!! No BRUCE Campbell!!! Pleeeeaasee NOT HIM!!!
He SUCKS!!! It’s FOOOLS GOLD I TELL YOU!!!
I think i’ll HANG myself if you select that guy!!
PLEEEASE NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

After seeing the raiders bulking up at the LB position with Groves, I think we are going McClain at 8 and picking up a NT like Cody at 2. I think Cable talking about Oline was all smoke and mirror. They’ll prob go after the Oline in rd 3 and 4.
Good nite.

Anyone!!!
Just Not Campbell PLEEASE!!! NO, No,NO!!

I was really hoping the Raiders could land Trent Williams. But judging by some of the latest mocks, he’s really moved up the board. Maybe even ahead of Okung.
I hope Al doesn’t settle for Bulaga or Campbell.
If Clausen is available at 8, they would be wise to dangle that pick and work a trade with a team wanting to get ahead of Buffalo.
I’ll be happy with McClain, Trent Williams, or even Clausen.
Can’t wait to hear, ” the Raiders are now on the clock…”

Raiders have listed Quentin Groves as a LB in the web. Trevor Scott, Kamerion Wimbley and Quentin Groves are DE playing LB. Are we going to play some 3-4 defense or what?
April 22nd, 2010 at 12:07 am
Bulaga at RG works for me with the 8th. If your going to take G at 8. Iupati? No way. Too raw a mauler with little technique.
Bulaga with his short arms takes over what WILL be a need at RG or even RT.
Who knows with Big Al though…

I think “or what”.
No NT to anchor that 3-4 but we do and will play 3-4 on occasion but not as a basae. Its 4-3 all the way for Mr Davis.

If they do take Bulaga, then I think there will be an open competition for the LT spot. With the loser sliding over to the other side.
Even if Bulaga can’t play LT, then he’ll be penciled-in at RT.
With Bulaga, the slow feet scare me more than the short arms.
Joe Thomas of Cleveland had short arms, but he has turned out to be a stud because of his footwork on the blindside.

Bulaga slow feet? wither you’ve never seen this guy play or you just don’t know what to look for. He has great feet it’s one of his strengths. His kick and slide is of the best in this draft. There isn’t much he doesn’t do well. His arms are his only drawback. Most scouts think he’s so good that he can’t get much better.
The OT’s are in this order 1. T Williams 2. Okung 3. Bulaga Davis and C Brown are very close IMO.
April 22nd, 2010 at 1:13 am
Also we already play some 3/4 front. We may be mving to more of it to take advantage of the talent at LB.But we played 3/4 maybe 30% f the time last year.

On Roethlisberger trade, Steelers likely have passed the point of no return
Posted by Mike Florio on April 21, 2010 10:36 PM ET
For a week, the Steelers failed to nip in the bud the notion that he is available via trade. Now, for nearly a full day, they have been actively shopping him to other teams, in the wake of the announcement of his six-game suspension for violating the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy.
So what happens if the Steelers can’t trade him for a first-round pick? Do they go for a Donovan McNabb package, with a second-round pick in 2010 and something more in 2011?
Or do they simply bring him back?
It could be too late for the Steelers to unring this bell, now that they’re trying to move the eleventh pick from the 2004 draft. Really, how often does a starting quarterback move from trading block to his old job?
To date, Roethlisberger’s camp has been silent. With the Steelers’ immediate response to the news of a suspension to be to commence the process of dumping him, maybe he has decided that he wants out.
Either way, this story won’t be wrapping up any time soon. If he gets traded, it’s actually only getting started.

We’re switching to a 3/4 and it could work.
Al’s not going for McClain, he’s going for Trent Williams with the 8th pick.

Dan Williams or Rolondo McClain — That would make for an outstanding draft…best draft in 10 years.
Williams or McClain…anything else and start rolling the clips of 40 yard runs…5 yard gashes etc..etc…..
Mario Henderson is the LT. If he was a 1st round pick, you all would be celebrating him like you do that bust DHB!

What I learned from last nights post…
is that KoolKell is a racist, he thinks all white people hate his race… That SteveAlford and Blackbeard thinks they have been treated bad because of their Irishness, funny how that they forget they made full payback as cops beating and jailing blacks without proper handling…
And M Lonetree tried bring in some quality to the discussion, he claims the same thing i heard for years… a black man from Africa would NEVER see a a black man from the US as his brother, cousin or anything near that, he would see him as pure american..
that KoolKell thinks columbus made it to africa and that he had slaves with him, well yeah there was slaves when the US was english and french, but the big burst all KK stems from came after the war of independence…
well, the sad part about is, I actually read those comments :/

Ive been a huge Tebow fan in College, and he’s just what the Raiders need at the QB position.
There are sooooo many awesomely talented players in this draft, can’t draft them all.
I’d come out of the draft a happy person if we drafted Tebow.
There are some players out there that would also make me happy, and positions addressed like OL/DT/MLB. Some like Mays, Berry, Kindle, that I’d be cool having on the team as well if Al wanted to draft sexy.
But let it be known, Tebow = girly yelp by me.

I almost forgot… You dont understand why KK would go to copenhagen, one of if not the best jazzfestival is in Copenhagen, thats why KK is going that week…
if you Copenhagen isnt on you list, well thats sad for you… if you find sandy beaches more important than other stuff, then you chose right…
you say you dont want to say anything bad about copenhagen, but in fact you do,
If it hadnt been for us and our brewery here in copenhagen, you wouldnt be able to drink your beer, we are the sole reason its possible to mass-produce beer…
and just for that you should be respectful and in awe LOL =)

—”Appearing on Mike and Mike in the Morning Friday, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen mentioned Darren McFadden as a player that might surprisingly be traded over the next three days. McFadden came up as Mort was naming players on the block, beginning with Albert Haynesworth and ending with unsigned restricted free agent Shawne Merriman. Merriman, though, can’t be traded until he inks his one-year tender. The No. 6 overall pick in 2008, McFadden has already missed seven games due to injury in his first two seasons and averaged just 3.9 yards a carry”—
April 22nd, 2010 at 5:06 am
c’mon you FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKing Raiders!
April 22nd, 2010 at 5:14 am
I still have a feeling this Roethlisberger trade could happen. If it does it’ll likely be a bombshell that’s not announced until the Raiders go on the clock because doing so beforehand would tip off the Bills and anyone else who might be interested in jumping up for Clausen. Trade could depend on whether Clausen is still there or not.
I actually think it’s 50/50 whether this happens even though the reports of the moment say talks have stopped. If those reports are true that could easily just be negotiating ploys by one or both sides.
Bottom line: Pittsburgh ownership wants Roethlisberger gone and no one is willing to just hand over a top-10 or probably even top-15 pick with his baggage right now. So I think we’re looking at a swap of first rounders and our 2nd for Ben. Or Ben + their 2nd for our 1st and 4th or something like that.
April 22nd, 2010 at 5:19 am
CINY…
yup, i fear that too, but i hope its not going to hurt our draft, I hope we can pull some lions-scheffler thingy =)

Tebow #8
Best #39
That would make me happy too. Even tho we have to address OL, it can still be done with late rounders etc.
April 22nd, 2010 at 5:32 am
I’d hope we low-ball the Steelers and only give up a 3rd for BB. He’ll be out for 6 weeks and another transgression will mean a whole season. 2010 already a wash if we get BB and he misses 6 games. Pointless imo, especially as he’ll have to spend the rest of the season trying to synch with our receivers etc.
I’d rather we get someone, whether Jason Campbell, Colt Brennan, or Tim Tebow (for eg), who can earn the job in camp, be in synch right from the get go, and no anvil hanging over their heads.
April 22nd, 2010 at 5:33 am
GG…
that would make me cry =)
April 22nd, 2010 at 5:39 am
I dont want you to cry, but there is method to the madness of drafting the sexy difference makers at the top, and finding many OL pearls later. As opposed to doing that in reverse. Best btw in context of McFadden traded for a high 2nd, say, and used on things like C, OG, NT, MLB, DB.
McFadden’s future is a scat-back/WR. Id rather an every-down contributor at OL/NT/MLB than a 3rd down specialist “RB”.
April 22nd, 2010 at 5:44 am
yeah, it was the Tebow thing that would make me cry… our team should get a name change if we draft him…

You had a case until you said you’d rather get Jason Campbell, Colt Brennan or Tim Tebow. There are serious questions about whether any of those guys can ever even be a halfway decent starter in the NFL. Ben has won 2 Super Bowls in about 5 seasons and is arguably the 4th best QB in the league right now. If you throw out the off-field issues I’ll take Roethlisberger having joined my team that morning to QB it that afternoon over months of preparation and timing with WRs established by Campbell, Brennan or Tebow.

April 22nd, 2010 at 6:01 am
I was just throwing some names around at QB. BB has the rings, but he’s on a career path to ruin now. Plus it’s pointless, him missing 6 games then spending 6 to acclimate to our WRs etc, waste of time, season a wash. PLus him 1 strike from longer suspension.
It’s not like a team in the NFL can ONLY win SBs if they have BB at QB. We can find alternatives. I personally like those 3 I mentioned as options. But my argument is not hinged on those particular 3 QBs.

What I learned this morning; La Milicia Negra needs to brush up on his English comprehension.
At no time did I ever say that I felt bad about the way the Irish were treated at certain points in history. I simply acknowleged that it happened, and gave props to SteveAlford for knowing the history of his heritage, which is something a lot of Americans don’t.
I also know about the abuses that some that share my heritage inflicted on others. I don’t feel any differently about that than the abuses the Irish suffered.
I wasn’t personally involved, it’s done and I can’t change any of it. It’s a new day, and my behavior now is a whole lot more relevant than the behavior of the folks on either side.
If that doesn’t clear it up for you, LMN, perhaps there are some more English classes you could take. It might help, because you are coming across as a judgemental ass.
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:03 am
Eagles would take McFadden off our hands. He would suit their offense very much too.
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:03 am
Found a couple of scouting reports on Quentin Groves before the 08 Draft:
Compares To: DeMarcus Ware-Dallas…Much like the Chargers’ Shawne Merriman and Ware, Groves has that explosive quickness and outstanding suddenness to wreak havoc in the backfield.
He is a perfect fit for a hybrid outside linebacker/rush end position in a 3-4 defensive scheme and like Merriman and Ware, he could thrive if allowed to play in a stand-up position. He was having a banner senior campaign before dislocating several toes, but with his balance and body control, along with lateral movement, he should have no problems adjusting to playing off the line.
With so much emphasis on pressuring the pocket and getting to the quarterback in the NFL, there is no other player in this draft that can match Groves’ pass rushing ability.
ANALYSIS: Groves is a disruptive defender who consistently makes plays in the opponent’s backfield. He possesses outstanding size/speed numbers and if he ever learns to elevate his game and consistently play at a high level he could be an All-Pro player in the NFL.
- You won’t find a guy like this in the 5th round, but why hasn’t he done it in 2 years?…I think he’s worth the risk.

Dakota said it best on a prior post, Ben knows how to move around in the pocket, he’s not a sitting duck out there…Pitt’s O-line is nothing special, Ben made a ton of plays despite constant pressure, I think he’d be just fine here.
And I don’t mind starting Bruce or Boller in the first 4 to 6 weeks, after that Ben takes over for the next 5 years.

Don’t know if anyone’s heard this or not, but Steve Corkran is reporting that the Steelers wanted the #8 overall from the Raiders for Big Ben. Apparently Al said, “Sure, if you throw in the #18 overall.”
Doesn’t look like the Rooneys are going for it.
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:31 am
Just think about it this way…
When was the last time a team passed on a Franchise QB because their line wasn’t good enough?.
It’s much easier to build a decent O-line than it is to get your hands on a Pro Bowl QB.

I’d take Ben and Pitt’s 3rd rounder for our 1st and 5th.
***
me too Marley!
2nd
3rd
3rd
7th
7th
O-Line could be fixed as soon as tomorrow night
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:36 am
I heard yesterday that Pitt wanted #8 and Nnamdi Asomugha. I don’t think THAT is worth it, a trade from #8 to #18 would be good!
If the trade does happen, I hope Big Ben cleans up his act…
Neil…I think it has been said already that Russell is a bust! He needs to prove us all wrong!!!
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:37 am
Cheers Bob!
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:37 am
Marley,
I don’t know. Al doesn’t have a first round pick next year. I think it would take a combination of things that they may come to terms on, but I’m pretty sure Al wants a first rounder this year. Pittsburgh’s second and third rounders are pretty far down the list to be settling for that, even if you do get Roethlisberger.
Al knows he has holes to fill, and not just at quarterback.
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:38 am
How much time have the teams for each pick ?
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:38 am
how about JaMarcus Russell and our 1st in exchange for Big Ben and thier 4th?
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:40 am
No one else want Roethlisberger ? Bills,Cards,Eagles or Rams?
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:41 am
I think the Steelers are waiting to trade Big Ben to Oakland until tonight.
if they trade him now and some team trades ahead of Oakland at #8 and snags Jimmy Clausen they are stuck with Leftwich/Dixon/Batch at QB or a “developmental” rookie QB later on like McCoy, Pike, LeFevour, Tebow, etc.
Steelers don’t want to screw the pooch by getting too antsy. Cleveland could still take Clausen too. you never know!
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:42 am
I’d take a fourth round pick for Russell!
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:43 am
when the Raiders are on the clock at #8 and Jimmy Clausen is still on the board you can bet your sweet ballsack that Al’s phone will be ringing!
…but maybe not until then
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:43 am
Trade DMAC for Rapelisberger and swap 1st’s with Pit. We can take Iupati in the teens. Big Ben will be the starter all the way through camp to get in synch with the team, and Grads or Russell can take us through the first 6 weeks.

Steelers could have an open QB competition between Dixon, Russell and the vets.
only way to dump JaFranchise with his monster salary is to trade him in a package deal like this one to a team that needs a QB and is desperate for whatever else it is we’re offering!
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:46 am
I think the two sides are definately reviewing their options on a trade. It is good to hear the Raiders acknowledge there are talks about Ben. Al has some players to add to the trade, so the Steelers are probably reviewing our tape. I would prefer we keep max picks…we have few players I wouldn’t consider trading.
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:46 am
I still don’t want Roethlisberger,BUT,I like that trade Bcz24.
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:47 am
Great idea Bcz!
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:48 am
Wasuup folks!
Any dreams or preminitions last night?
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:49 am
JaMarcus Russell and our 1st in exchange for Big Ben and thier 4th
… also means they could draft Haden at #8 if Clausen is off the board to Cleveland.
CB is a huge need for that team.
We all saw Gradkowski/Murphy rip them a new one! yikes!
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:52 am
BCz…
I was thinking the same stuff, but i still dont like BB, that said, he might even not get suspended, Goodell have said nothinng determined yet… then it would be a steal, but of course he will get suspension…
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:53 am
Trade DMAC for Rapelisberger and swap 1st’s with Pit.
***
if we make this trade I want Terrence Cody or Ryan Mathews at #18 , not Pouncey or Iupati !!!
SD is gonna grab one of these beasts and dominate us. I’d rather see them stuck with Jahvid Best at RB. another Darren Sproles imo. haha
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:56 am
Ben’s suspension could be reduced to 4 games if he goes to that counseling session and tells the shrink that he’s sorry for what he did.
hope the doc isn’t some young hot chick with a stocked liquor cabinet in her office!

NOT A ONE!
Bidding against ourselves and we give up the #8 AND a player?
I’ll pass on that one.
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:57 am
A ton of scenarios out there. You don’t hear too much about them, but the Chiefs are not a lock to stay where they are, either. Pioli wheeled and dealed quite a bit on draft day when he was in New England, and they have a lot of holes that multiple picks could help fill.
Holmgren just gets nervous and feels like he has to do something; witness all the pretty inconsequential activity that went on when he first took over the Browns.
There might be a small bidding war to get into a position to take Clausen, and that could affect everybody that picks after Tampa Bay.
Way too variables to say for sure that something specific will or won’t happen. I even read this morning that the Giants have accessed Spiller’s cellphone number. Considering that the Seahawks and the Browns are rumored to be in the mix for him, tonight could get interesting. Wouldn’t surprise me at all for Pete Carroll to trade his pick for the Giants’, grab another pick or two and take his former player Charles Brown to play LT for the “Hawks with the Giants’ first rounder.

#8 pick for Big Ben AND the #18 pick or NO DEAL Rooney!
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:58 am
Too funny Rockstar, and JHill…I agree! Not for our #8 and any player!
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:58 am
A little surprised that no other team has asked about Roethlisberger. That we know of.
April 22nd, 2010 at 6:59 am
Al Davis doesn’t care about his image. see the Lane Kiffin presser & DHB/Mitchell selections last year for example. and keeping Cable after he knocked the p1ss out of the asst DB’s coach in a meeting.
he cares about winning football games. period.
if he thinks Big Ben can help us accomplish that … WELCOME TO OAKLAND !!!
April 22nd, 2010 at 7:01 am
3 days of draft fun!!!!!!
Today we fix our LB. Tomorrow we fix the lines.
And Sat, we trade Kirk and Howard.

throw in JaWalrus, just for sport.
Jhill, if he’s every bit as capable as you, Debo and Priest think … then it’ll make a fun match-up on 11/21 when we travel to Pittsburgh!
all he needs is a better supporting cast, right fellas?
let’s find out !!!

That scouting report on Groves is crazy.
I’ve been a proponent of the 3-4 for us for quite some time. Just looking at the personell, we are 1 NT away from being …..
Nahhhhhh. who am I fooling.
April 22nd, 2010 at 7:06 am
That is if we can get a real NT though, right!
April 22nd, 2010 at 7:07 am

D White was just on ESPN2 and made a point of saying that the Steelers are the ones calling the Raiders.
3rd rd pick and a player AL. Cmon, their desperate.

Terrence Cody will be available at #18
i’m just saying …
April 22nd, 2010 at 7:09 am
jhill,
i agree. looking more and more like there could be a shift to 3-4. if that is the case then drafting McClain at 8 and trying to get mt cody with our 2nd (or trading up to get him) would pay immediate dividends. just not sure if i am buying it. Probably more of a case of uncle Al seeing a tremendous athlete available and trying to fit him into what is already being done here.
April 22nd, 2010 at 7:09 am
Ben is a winner and a hell of a leader… ON the field. DMAC has done nothing, except have a decent game against the Chiefs once, getting rid of him is not a huge loss in my books, and it fills a need for the steelers. Swapping first rd picks is win win for both teams. I think that trade offers Pitt enough value, without the Raiders getting taken for a rid like normal (see Belecik, Bill). Big Ben will absolutely do whatever it takes to get his sentence “commuted” to 4 games. I think we will go 2-2 or at worst 1-3 in those 4 games, then with Ben coming in instantly upgrading us. He will make the running game better as well as the passing game, he can play behind a porous oline (lets face it, pit probably has the 3rd or 4th worst oline in football) and he would put fans in the seats. I love the trade if the value is right. I hate it if we just give up the 8th for him and thats it.

trade #8 and a future conditional 4th round that could either escalate to a 3rd or 2nd based on Rapistbergers play or downgrade to a 6th or 7th if Ben gets in more trouble for the troubled qb and the squeelers pick at #18.
April 22nd, 2010 at 7:12 am
us being a 3-4 team, would be GREAT!
April 22nd, 2010 at 7:13 am
I’d be shocked if the Raiders are able to acquire Big Ben for a swap of 1st rounders
April 22nd, 2010 at 7:13 am
Regarding Trindon Holliday, my choice for “Fast Guy Late In The Draft to Return Kicks and Punts”…
4.31 40 was the fastest at the NFL Combine this year.
One scout’s opinion: “Whoever takes him, keeps him, because he will scare the **** out of everyone they’re playing. This kid can play.”
April 22nd, 2010 at 7:14 am
